Reviews for The Bedford Hotel

Review 1:Bit hit and miss with the parking but the staff bent over backwards to ensure you had somewhere !

Review 2:So convenient for beach, shops and pubs. they have an excellent chef, the food was amazing. We took our dog and they made us all feel very welcome.

Review 3:Small criticism, I found the lighting quite low in the room and bathroom making it very difficult to do make up, but I will travel with one of those lit mirrors in future so problem solved. We will be back!

Review 4:Everything. Friendly helpful staff always pleasant. Good food, as vegetarians we sometimes find we get poor quality and choice, but the quality was great. Lovely spacious comfortable room, super view.

Review 5:The Bedford Hoteis right on the sea front with great veiws. The staff were amazing. They were so friendly & considerate. Being a solo traveller it can sometimes be a bit daunting eating out, but the staff were great. The breakfast was good. Along with the usual choice of cereal and fruit you also could choose a cooked breakfast as well. I was not able to make breakfast one day so they made me up a goody bag to take with me. Will definitely return.

Review 6:Only very limited parking available at hotel, but as there is a large carpark nearby it isnt really a problem.

Review 7:Great location with sea view from our hotel room. Lovely and comfortable accomodation with spotlessly clean modern bathroom. Very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent breakfasts with good varied choice.

Review 8:The staff were so helpful, nothing was a problem. The room was lovely, not poky like so many single rooms and it had a lovely balcony and view. The shower was very good and the breakfast was perfect.

Review 9:Car parking is a real concern. They should do a deal with the car park. 50% tariff would be good for 24 hour parking. £6 instead off £12 would be reasonable.

Review 10:Excellent staff and service. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent room facilities. 5 star service at 3 star prices.Super location on sea front.

Review 11:Complimentary tea/coffee on arrival. My husband suffers with poor hearing and there was a large group in the dining room, we were able to eat in the bar area which was a lot quieter.

Review 12:needs smarting up in certain areas.Restaurant (pynes) too small people packed in like sardines.T V too small for such a large room

Review 13:comfortable ,warm, friendly.Very good room(23)New bathroom fitted.Very friendly staff.Car parking could be a problem in busy times

Review 14:The staff were very friendly and welcoming on arrival and throughout our entire stay - I can't praise them enough. The hotel was exceptionally clean and the decor throughout the hotel was lovely, with the rooms being very comfortable and nicely decorated with individual features (we had 3 rooms). The cooked breakfast was excellent and we also had two very good meals in Pyne's restaurant. We would definitely stay here again - it significantly exceeded our expectations for a 3-star hotel.

Review 15:The shower in room 23 floods. The TV could have been larger. The kettle had to be held down to heat up.

Review 16:Location of hotel. The staff were friendly. The lift was very quaint!

Review 17:There are one or two less than ideal aspects as far as comfort/convenience is concerned but it's difficult to see how certain things could improve in the aged premises. Never like to hear music when eating, talking etc.

Review 18:Staff - all were cheerful, on the ball, and energetic. The food was excellent.

Review 19:A pity the entrance in side street belies the extremely attractive facilities. Also steps up make access slightly problematical.

Review 20:Location, amenities and helpfulness of staff

Review 21:The parking is minuscule and inconvenient.

Review 22:Friendly staff particularly the receptionist helpful porter .Excellent breakfast, personal table for lone traveller

Review 23:Breakfasts were nice, but the scrambled egg was inedible

Review 24:Fantastic location and very friendly service. Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Not cheap but the balcony and sea view were so worth it.

Review 25:Suggest internal lift be used by resid-ents with walking difficulties.Staircase has a sharp turn, current hand-rail inappropriate!

Review 26:Friendly helpful staff. Excellent varied menu. Good house - keeping. Large bedroom with well appointed re-furbished shower/bathroom. Comfortable bed Nice to take coffee in comfortable residents lounges

Review 27:The bed - and especially the pillows - were quite firm.

Review 28:Good position. Quite a large room with balcony and plenty of storage spaces. Pyne's Restaurant for evening meal. Friendly staff.

Review 29:NONE REALLY - LIMITED PARKING FREE WITH HOTEL WAS A SLIGHT PAIN BUT YOU CANT HAVE EVERYTHING

Review 30:WE WERE LAST MINUTE BOOKING SO WE COULD NOT BE CHOOSY AND UNDERSTOOD FACILITIES WOULD BE LIMITED. THE VERY BEST THING WAS ACTUALLY THE STAFF THEY WERE EXCELLENT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!

Review 31:I thought the price per night for B&B was high, booked as it was ideal for my elderly parents but for £160 per night normally I would look for an evening meal included but still an enjoyable stay.

Review 32:Freindly welcome and location was good.

Review 33:The hot water took ages to come through in the bathroom, shower especially and hardly any pressure dissappointing for such a nice room.

Review 34:Friendly hotel, staff very helpful excellent location, good food.

Review 35:Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Lovely sea view from room described as " partial sea view". Spacious room with tasteful decor. Sea front location. Quiet and relaxing.

Review 36:Looked a little "tired" on first arrival (probably compared with Hotel Riviera next door) but our bedroom and en-suite were excellent and everywhere very clean. Staff also made stat very pleasant and longer we stayed the better we liked it.

Review 37:Extremely helpful & friendly staff. Excellent bedroom & en-suite. Full sea views, not partial as noted on booking form. Excellent breakfasts and evening meals.

Review 38:Parking facilities poor although staff were very helpful

Review 39:Excellent room with balcony overlooking the sea. 2 Comfortable chairs in room. Food very good - £10 evening meal excellent value. Hotel very clean and cared for.

Review 40:Thought that the cook was away on Monday, food better after that when it was very good indeed.

Review 41:The location, the atmosphere in the hotel, and the lovely outlook from the bedrooms

Review 42:The receptionist gave us a very warm welcome and went out of her way to check parking availability for us. Also helped with my bags to the room a very good first impression, which followed through the whole stay. The room was lovely and bright and airy.

Review 43:I was very dissapointed that no parking was provided at the hotel as I was lead to believe that a car park was available and it cost an extra £45.00 to park my car.

Review 44:I was performing in Sidmouth Folk Festival and The Bedford was a hub of activity.

Review 45:No mushrooms on the breakfast menu! More dedicated parking spaces would be nice

Review 46:Very friendly & helpful staff Excellent company of fellow folkies at breakfast Ease of booking + free cancellation policy Location at the centre of Folk Festival

Review 47:The very late night noise from the sea front - but then it is folk festival week, so I knew it would be noisy, just didn't expect it to go on till 2.00 am, but that is outside the control of the hotel ... Being made to sit on a 'special' table for 'singles' at breakfast.

Review 48:My room and the view of the sea front.

Review 49:Comfort of bed, and when you had a shower the tray was not deep enough and the water ran over the bathroom floor. So had to use one of the bath towels to soak it up. Was not told there was an additional restaurant for evening meals other than the paynes. Only found out after we had our last meal at the paynes.

Review 50:Staff , location, breakfast. First night really liked the evening meal at the paynes but it was not quite as nice the second night.

Review 51:Nothing

Review 52:extremely pet friendly, beautiful sea views right on the coast lovely walk along the esplanade Panes restaurant amazing Beautiful room amazing views extremely dog friendly

Review 53:Comfortable, clean room with a lovely sea view. The balcony was the icing on the cake. The staff were friendly and treated my little dog as a welcome guest.

Review 54:The staff were brilliant, especially Ollie and Debbie who were incredibly helpful and nice. The location was brilliant and rooms were smart. The food was very good, and reasonably priced.

Review 55:Very disappointed with the size of the TV in bedroom - it was more suitable for a caravan.

Review 56:The friendliness of the staff and the excellent food and service.

Review 57:Would have liked a lighter menu with salad and without gravy but I was in the minority as most elderly people like their roast dinners

Review 58:Staff were very helpful to my elderly mother The hotel is geared to older people and caters for them well The wine is reasonably priced and the coffee and mints served in the lounge a nicetouch

Review 59:The staff are welcoming and helpful. As is the owner! The rooms comfortable and with an excellent sea view. The food was very good and the portions very generous. All in all the Bedford is everything a mid-price British seaside hotel should be! And the bonus was that the wi-fi was blisteringly fast!

Review 60:I actually was very lucky, but was surprised at the lack of car parking available for a hotel of this size.

Review 61:Location... Sidmouth great, coast path easily accessible both ways for great walks and hotel close to the agility show that I was competing in!

Review 62:Only a very small car park able to accommodate 6 cars. Staff at Pynes restaurant were a little indifferent. The hotel could do more to attract younger couples as on our first day the dining room was full of a bus load of OAPS which felt like being in a geriatrics home!

Review 63:Fantastic location on the sea front. The receptionist was first class and extremely helpful. Other than the fist few hours where we parked the car in the pay as you park car park, for the remainder of our stay parking was free at the rear of the hotel. Nice spacious, clean and modern room with view of the sea and the cricket field. We had a meal at the Pynes restaurant which was lovely and we were given a complimentary bottle of wine which was a lovely surprise. All in all I would recommend this hotel

Review 64:Bed was slightly uncomfortable. Parking also can be an issue as there are very limited parking spaces at the back of the hotel.

Review 65:Friendly staff, very clean, next to the beach!

Review 66:The dreadful pillows - we are used to feather pillows. I would have liked a bath that I could have sat in, obviously I could not use the lovely shower because I still had dressings on.

Review 67:The staff were very kind and helpful - I had just has an operation on my shoulder and had one arm in a sling. The room was lovely and we enjoyed sitting out on the balcony on thetwo occasions the weather permitted.

Review 68:The pillows were hard and uncomfortable, but it was only a minor point

Review 69:The friendliness of the staff made our stay very memorable. The couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful

Review 70:The hotel is a family well run Hotel in a great location, providing a pleasant & comfortable stay. The staff were always friendly & helpful.

Review 71:Not enough parking for all clients, but able to unload/load at hotel door, then find on-street free parking not far away.

Review 72:Nice spacious room with sea view. Plenty of storage. Recently upgraded en suite large shower room. Very pleasant staff. Good breakfast and great choice of other meals.

Review 73:From start to finish the staff were wonderful friendly and helpful and our spaniel was welcomed with open arms. Our room was superb, the food was delicious and very good value for money. The "shed" was a great addition as it was lovely to have dinner and be able to have the dog with us.

Review 74:A lot of foreign staff (not against them) but some did not understand English very well and did get food request a little wrong.

Review 75:The sea view room the nearness to the beach. The food.

Review 76:The single beds are a little bit boaty.. as in they wibble around a bit. Not a problem for healthy people, but I have a back problem, and this wasn't ideal.

Review 77:The service, the decor and the cleanliness. Also, they allowed me to have (non-cooked) breakfast earlier than the stated start time, which was very nice.

Review 78:Would have liked more scallops in my scallop risotto but scallops are expensive so is par for the course. And I adore scallops so maybe just me being greedy!

Review 79:The view from our window was fantastic as could see all the way along the coast both directions.

Review 80:Bed was lumpy as felt few springs through. Told reception on way out. Just needed attending to matress cover or new one.

Review 81:I had a balcony room which i did not know till there. Good onsuite. Lovely as hotels usualy put singles at the back!! Friendly and efficient staff. Lovely hot breakfast and good choice.Excellent wifi and position to beach and town.

Review 82:Nothing i didn't like.

Review 83:Great location. i had an excellent room with a sea view. Good value, fantastic food. very helpful staff nothing was too much trouble and the reason for this is as i was there for work i needed an earlier breakfast and they sorted it with no problem. If staying in Devon make your stay here you will not regret it.

Review 84:The single room was quite small but I hadn't expected more for the money. It was plenty good enough for my little break by the sea.

Review 85:Seeing the sea just outside my window was a wonderful start to the day. I just enjoyed being in Sidmouth staying at a convenient hotel.

Review 86:Parking is a bit limited so it's best to arrive early. And I'd suggest booking a table at the restaurant with your stay as they're always fully booked at weekends, but this is due to great food and service.

Review 87:We were greeted by a very friendly, helpful receptionist. The room was spacious, very clean with a decent view and the bed very comfy. The bar was recently refurbished, and again very friendly staff. Had a great meal there too.

Review 88:Having visited the Hotel many times in Folk Week, this was the first time I had stayed there. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, completely with sea view, for the February reunion weekend

Review 89:The staff welcomed us with open arms and could not do enough, they were great with our 2 dogs and we even offered a couple of pork sausages to give them following breakfast. If your looking for a friendly and relaxing atmosphere with good food then try the restaurant whilst you are there, we liked it that much we ate there both nights. All in all you wont go far wrong here.

Review 90:All staff were extremely lovely and made us feel very welcome, perfect surroundings, great breakfast and an overal amazing night away. Would extremly recommend hotel and location!

Review 91:Nothing. Except perhaps the weather! Mind you, it was February.

Review 92:Everything during our stay was perfect. The staff were pleasant and very helpful. The room (No 23) was fabulous. The food was outstanding (we have never had plates that were still warm AFTER we had finished our breakfast). The bed was so comfortable we slept like logs from the first night. We will be back!

Review 93:The bed had no mattress cover, and a very itchy old blanket on top of the mattress with a thin sheet on top of it. This did NOT make for a comfortable night's sleep as I could feel the itchy blanket beneath me!

Review 94:As above

Review 95:I was on the second floor and found it very confusing to find my way downstairs if not using the lift. A few signs would have been helpful to locate stairs.

Review 96:Very friendly welcome. Lovely single room with sea view and balcony. Excellent location for both town and sea. Good breakfast choice.

Review 97:Nothing at fault

Review 98:On our arrival the staff and reception were very friendly and made us feel so relaxed. My mum needed a break and she enjoyed every minute. All the staff could not have been more helpful. The view from our room was fabulous. We will return. Lovely all round. Food was delicious.

Review 99:Not being able to stay longer.

Review 100:The Bedford hotel compliments Sidmouths charm. Its nice to see service and warmth in such a memorable place. We have so many happy memories.

Review 101:The parking can be difficult at times

Review 102:The location of this hotel could perhaps be taken for granted, but just pause a moment, and the breathtaking scene that unfolds each day from this spot will touch your innermost being and say,how good is life, how blessed we are.

Review 103:VERY SMALL CAR PARK ONLY 6 SPACES ROOM WAS VERY WARM

Review 104:LOVEY LARGE ROOM WITH SEA VIEW BETTER THAN AVERAGE SHOWER, KEPT ITS TEMPERATURE AND POWER GOOD TV RECEPTION, TEA AND COFFEE FACILITIES IN ROOM

Review 105:Although this hotel advertises its dog-friendliness, I was not allowed in the restaurant nor even the bar with my small dog. Instead, I had to be served any meals and drinks away from all other guests in a room called "The Shed". Even the front door of the hotel had a "No dogs" sign.

Review 106:The staff were brilliant and the room, though small, was comfortable and had a lovely view.

Review 107:It didn't bother me but I think that had I had a lady companion shewould have been disappointed that there was no lighting over or near thedressing table mirror. In my opinion, although I'm no expert, therewas not enough light from the bathroom mirror for the successfulapplication of make-up! At breakfast I asked if the kippers were'real' and was assured that they were. In the event they werekipper fillets, not the same thing at all.

Review 108:On arrival I was offered a complimentary cup of tea or coffee eventhough both were available in my room and I thought that was a nicetouch. I booked a single room and was pleasantly surprised to find ithad a double bed. The Triton shower looked as if it would struggle to dothe job but once again, I was pleasantly surprised, it was veryefficient. The menu in the bar/restaurant looked excellent althoughI didn't have the opportunity to try it but there were good ales inthe bar and the staff were friendly.

Review 109:THE BED WAS AWFUL, AND THE HEAT IN THE ROOM ALL NIGHT MADE IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.

Review 110:LOCATION, CLEANLINESS, LARGE ROOM, TEA COFFEE, ROOM FACILITIES, VIEW OVERALL IT WAS OK, BUT

Review 111:Although staff did all they could, being an older, somewhat rambling hotel, it is not ideal for someone confined to a wheelchair

Review 112:Friendly, helpful staff, nicely decorated comfortable rooms, excellent food. Great location on the seafront.

Review 113:We had a side view room of the sea and very comfortable beds. Bathroom needs to be updated, as it was small but serviceable for our needs. Excellent position on the front. Service was superb with great eye for detail. Will definitely recommend The Bedford.

Review 114:nothing.

Review 115:I used the hotel while visiting for my father's funeral. The staff were sympathetic and took the time to be exceptionally helpful. Their attitude makes a good hotel into an excellent one. All the fundamentals from food choice, cleanliness, outfit of the rooms etc was great - as you might hope for, but the staff were simply superb.

Review 116:Limited parking spaces at hotel.

Review 117:Great location, good breakfast, friendly staff. Large room provided with comfortable double bed, Sidmouth is a pretty seaside town with good range of independant shops and restaurants. I would recommend staying again.

Review 118:Prefer a shower cubicle rather than shower over bath.

Review 119:welcome with cup of tea and biscuits, comfortable room, good breakfast and good food in residents dining room and restaurant. The offer made it excellent value.

Review 120:Restricted parking

Review 121:Brilliant sea view, lovely staff, nice breakfast though a touch mean(one egg, one sausage when you just order egg/bacon and sausage).

Review 122:Lack of car parking was a small inconvenience.

Review 123:The staff were friendly and welcoming, of particular note the receptionist, porter and restaurant staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The offer of complementary tea on arrival was a lovely touch. Comfortable rooms, food prepared with care and very reasonable. We could not fault anything.

Review 124:The old windows were draughty and a bit noisey due to other in considerate guests rather than the hotels fault . Car parking is poor although there was a public car park opposite a charge of £12 per day was a bit steep

Review 125:The staff were very friendly and polite and nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were very clean and roomy. The resturaunt was good and the menu good quality, and well presented. The location was great right in the heart of the town. Had a lovely stay

Review 126:Wifi only near reception Older hotel with lots of history- parking limited on site but paid parking across the road

Review 127:Quaint hotel with lovely staff A slow pace relaxing spot Lift was a blessing

Review 128:The lack of car parking. Our visit was in early October and it was difficult to find a place to park before 5pm then. It must be far more difficult in high summer. The car park opposite the hotel entrance (in Station Rd) is VERY expensive if staying long-term/overnight.

Review 129:Clean, fresh, tidy, excellent breakfasts with a good choice, friendly and efficient staff, good seafront location with views. Dined out mainly, but good curries in the Pyne's bar at front of the hotel.

Review 130:Breakfast tasted as though pre cooked and reheated but everything elsewas so good this didn't matter.

Review 131:Staff were lovely, great location, value and service - I left a chargerin my room and by the time I got home had an email letting me know andit was posted to me right away.

Review 132:The bed I had was hard... that's all I can find to gripe about.

Review 133:The staff deserve a special mention. They went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. Especially the reception girls and the porter. A good second were the bar and dining room staff. I certainly will come again.

Review 134:One would need to be a particularly unreasonable or difficult guest to find fault - bearing in mind the price paid too. Not too keen on the spelling of travellers in this questionaire though! There are two "l"s!

Review 135:All members of staff were excellent and the courteous offer of tea or coffee upon arrival was appreciated - as much for the thought as the refreshment.
