Reviews for New Inn Hotel
Review 1:Nothing bad to report, just a few warnings to the unwary. The building is old, town services in winter are catch-as-catch-can, the weather can be dismal. You'll need some rain gear. The meals at the Inn are solid but workmanlike. Don't expect gourmet treats or multi-star amenities. You can also catch supper at the Red Lion's pub, a nice change we tried for one night. You'd better be able to carry your own luggage up and down that street. If you ever want a fitness test, try hauling your luggage to the top in the December dark, when it's raining. Clovelly in winter is not for those who need help getting around. Those cobblestones can be lethal when wet. You'd better be strong, sure-footed, and in shape. It's also not for the easily bored. A car, which you must leave at the Visitors' Center up top, is almost a necessity. Understand that, in other towns along the coast as well, many shops and attractions are shuttered for the season.
Review 2:Clovelly is unique. There are only two hotels in town, aside from a few tiny B&Bs. The New Inn is the older and smaller of the two. The Inn is halfway down the cobblestoned street, towards the quay. Our room overlooked the roofs and harbor, and was just what we wanted. Clovelly in December is quite different from the tourist season. It can appear almost deserted, especially at night, an odd and poetic sight amid the beautiful Christmas lights. Many of the shops you'll visit in summer are now shuttered. We had the Inn, and much of the town, largely to ourselves. The bartender in their little pub, Andrew, was also our breakfast and supper cook. In winter here, many hats are worn by a few. Andrew was unfailingly cheerful and helpful, and when we had to leave pre-dawn to catch a Heathrow flight, he prepared and delivered a small cold breakfast for us the night before. Our room was top floor and spacious, the bed comfortable, the bathroom decent. The several lounges were nicely decorated with trees and Victorian ornaments. If you're resourceful, don't mind quiet, and are equipped to drive down the coast to visit other towns, Clovelly pre-Christmas is something appealing and different.
Review 3:Shower curtain was really badly stained and needed replacing - horrible. The bed linen looked greyish this also needed replacing. The room could have been lovely - the cleaner obviously did her best to make it look nice!
Review 4:Very happy and helpful staff. The food although plain, was good, especially the breakfasts.
Review 5:We did stay slightly out of main season but the restaurant opening times were a little restricted (Open 6pm to 7pm for supper, 9 to 10am for breakfast)
Review 6:Beautiful views and enchanting surroundings.
Review 7:When we had to leave!
Review 8:The new Inn was fab! The food was great and a very warm happy feel to the Hotel, room and balcony was nice looking up the cobble stones!
Review 9:The restaurant not open in the evening so we had to eat in the bar. This was not a enjoyable experience as the bar smelt of damp dog. This was very disappointing.
Review 10:Polite ,friendly staff. Lovely location. Relaxing weekend break.
Review 11:Our room, 22 had continual noise from external exhaust fans outside the room and even with windows closed, the noise was unsatisfactory - the air conditioner was also extremely noisy and without the aircon on, the room was stifling. The windows were frosted as there was only a view of external walls and exhaust fans and this made room very dark.
Review 12:Setting on the Lake was exceptional. High quality food with vegetarian choices. Great walks in the area.
Review 13:Hotel being re-roofed when we were there, guys working from 8am right outside our bedroom window. Some cleanliness issues in the hotel - nothing major but little details matter & are noticed!!
Review 14:Location
Review 15:the only thing i did not like was the foreign guy you have greeting you for breakfast in the mornings. miserable fellow . he did not listen to the requests he did not smile . that would be the only thing that would stop me from coming back , because there are plenty more good B&Bs out here to try .
Review 16:from bringing the luggage down, the greeting , etc
Review 17:Room wasn't ready when we arrived which was half an hour after booking in time but least we knew it was clean! Staff in breakfast room could of been a little more pleasant. Coffee was luke warm when we eventually got it.
Review 18:Lady in reception was very cheerful. Room was lovely with a lovely view. Room had all the little extras of soap and bottle water etc.Breakfast when we got it was lovely.
Review 19:We loved Clovelly and could not have been luckier in our choice of hotel. The bedroom was superb, the food was fabulous and the staff were lovely - they made us feel so welcome.
Review 20:The fact that your web site advertises a menu that according to staff has not been available for almost 2 years. My wife and I booked an overnight for my birthday thinking that we would be able to dress up and have a nice meal in your restaurant . How disappointed we were !! In the position we were left in our only alternative was to eat a bar meal which was anything but home cooked !! For the price we were asked to pay for this meal it was certainly not worth it.
Review 21:The breakfast was the only part of our stay that I could say anything positive about.
Review 22:The hill to get there, but that is much of the character.
Review 23:interesting old building in lovely scenic village. Good coastal walks from the hotel. Worth a trip to Hartland Quay which was wildly atmospheric.
Review 24:The waiter at breakfast on Sunday morning said they didn't have fruit teas when I asked for it; he hadn't even checked and I knew they did have them as I had one on the Saturday morning.
Review 25:The receptionist was a lovely lady, very pleasant and helpful.
Review 26:Room small & old fashioned. Bed small & bathroom needs to be modernised. This hotel needs a complete overhaul.
Review 27:Did not like anything about this hotel.
Review 28:Couple of minor issues, had to enter hotel through bar door, 2 other main entrances to reception were closed, lack of staff on arrival, welcomed at the bar! Room was comfortable, but lack of coat hooks on doors for wet coats, no headboard on bed so pillows against back wall, and shaver light in bathroom not working.
Review 29:Great location, lovely hotel though looking a little bit tired in places. Evening meal at Red Lion was excellent, head waiter was very attentive but also discreet.
Review 30:We felt the staff were not particularly welcoming. They were renovating at the time so that may have been an influencing factor.
Review 31:The location makes touring the village easy.
Review 32:Our room was of a poor standard given the price- bed like a concrete slab; curtains that don't fit the window on to the street making privacy difficult; a basic shower over the bath with multiple water stains on the ceiling and a he in the ceiling above the toilet letting brown water drip through. The breakfast room was next to another, currently being painted- painting in progress as we ate.
Review 33:The location is quaint.
Review 34:They were working on the roof and there was staining where it had been leaking, it is in an old building so not too much of a problem but I felt the price was high considering this. An hour is a little restricitive for breakfast and dinner also.
Review 35:The location is lovely, the room was comfortable and a nice substantial breakfast.
Review 36:Rugby was on tv was which is in restaurant area was kinda loud during our meal Apart frim that is was a great stay
Review 37:The room was fantastic great views of the sea
Review 38:1. Lady at reception aloof and unwelcoming. 2. Lobby areas neglected and sad looking 3. Restaurant closes at 7pm, too early
Review 39:1, warm friendly service at breakfast, very nice lady server 2. Delicious breakfast and efficient breakfast svc 3. Comfortable rooms, good value
Review 40:Nothing negative to report.
Review 41:We had a fabulous stay. We were the only residents so we were well looked after. The room was very comfortable, the food and beer were delicious and the staff very friendly. Excellent value
Review 42:Having to carry bags from car park on arrival.
Review 43:The new inn is what all pubs used to be like. It has a fabulous atmosphere, great food, great staff, very accommodating. Billy, our dog, was treated very well also. Will definitely stay again.
Review 44:There was a loose bedspring in the mattress!
Review 45:Loved the hotel location,(if quite a hike to walk down the cobbles) sea & roof view, ambience, food, attentive staff, Clovelly's wonderful history and the Herring Festival atmosphere. Totally relaxing.
Review 46:Steep climb on cobbled path both up and down from hotel. Virtually had to have dinner there; access to other places not easy. Good but typical pub meals only. Room a little cosy!
Review 47:Unique location. Building full of character next cobbled street of Clovelly. Breakfasts were v. good. Staff charming. Good base for coastal walks. Luggage taken to / from hotel for you (essential).
Review 48:This hotel could be so much better - it needs money spent on replacing the dusty, faded soft furnishings - it reminded us of a tired trusthouse forte hotel from the 1970's. The dead pot plant on the hallway window sill.. The kitchen door propped open with plastic tub of Marmite sachets!
Review 49:Clovelly when the tourists have gone home. Comfy bed. New bedroom carpet and bathroom. Room with rooftop view to the sea. Easy access to coast paths.
Review 50:Breakfast waiter should ask whether the customer wants tea or coffee instead of bringing both without asking. Bar area on Saturday evening was empty.
Review 51:Convience, considering the steep hill. Breakfast good as was the quantity.
Review 52:The price I paid was three times as much as what they were advertising when I arrived.
Review 53:I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It was clean and quaint!
Review 54:Coffee at breakfast.... Tasted awful
Review 55:Lovely clean relaxing room very quaint. Comfortable, very good value my husband loved the choice of kippers on the menu for breakfast.....
Review 56:Great room with an excellent view of the cobbled streets and the sea. The balcony was a super surprise bonus too. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely stay in a beautiful place.
Review 57:The vegetarian options were very poor and the meal - burger and chips ( through lack of choice) lacked any taste. At times the staff were totally run off their feet but remained very nice. The coffee at breakfast was as usual unpleasant. When will hotels offer real coffee??
Review 58:Very comfortable Fantastic location Lovely when the day trippers had gone home
Review 59:Lighting in the room was feeble at best. Only one tiny wall light & 2 bedside lamps which didn't cast much light.
Review 60:Room was lovely, with good facilities. Staff great. Breakfast good. Excellent atmosphere.
Review 61:Clovelly is a vertical village, once you have parked at the visitors centre you should ensure you take everything with you, you will not want to keep popping back to the car. This would not stop me going back. The Hotel offers to bring luggage down.
Review 62:The actual location was beautiful, but only two places to eat in the village. Food at the New Inn was excellent.
Review 63:Friendly staff and comfortable rooms, home from home
Review 64:Room very warm and no way of turning heating down.
