Reviews for Carlton Hotel

Review 1:Room was awful!! Furniture practically pre-war, bed lumpy & uncomfortable, safety catch on window broken. En-suite an absolute joke!! Wasn't expecting much for £60 but this was diabolical!

Review 2:The staff were friendly

Review 3:The warmth and friendliness of the owners and all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble . The breakfasts had a huge variety to choose from and individual tastes catered for. Fantastic stay . Rooms were refreshed daily .

Review 4:All staff made us feel comfortable, and for xrtra piece of mind there was a night porter who was very pleasant. Room was a little dated but clean and comfortable. The quality of the food at breakfast along with staff and atmosphere were first class. Will be visiting again.

Review 5:We were let down by hotel and booking .com. Evening meals were stated on booking.com web site, as it turned out, the hotel was not offering evening meals, so the contract was broken. We were unable to park the car Saturday, in their car park, our small room was by the lift, so had sleepless nights; on the whole, the hotel was very noisy. Considering our small room was by the lift and no evening meals supplied: this hotel was way over priced. Because we had to go out again in the evening for a meal, I feel a refund should be offered. Evening meals were offered at a later date when a coach party came in, which did not help us at the time. I did complain to management about this, but no result.

Review 6:Bed was very comfortable and staff friendly Breakfast was excellent..

Review 7:None at all

Review 8:Extremely welcoming, staff friendly, helpful, smiley, if you needed help with anything such as information or even print out information and maps of the area for you they would. I cannot fault them.

Review 9:There was nothing I disliked.

Review 10:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel has new management and it was great to hear their plans for the future. The location was close to the town and beach but was still quiet overnight.

Review 11:Vegetarian food selection needs re vamping. Initially was put in a room in the bowels of the hotel which was terribly depressing. The hotel were good enough to move me though when the TV didn't work.

Review 12:Location

Review 13:Local cafes do not stay open until early evening. I suppose they are only catering for those going to the beach etc. Hotel could or at least investigate if they can capitalise on this gap in the market.

Review 14:Friendliness of staff from moment of arrival. In a quiet location: walking distance of small shops and buses.

Review 15:Hotel car park is small, we were lucky to get a space but it is surrounded by lots of streets where you can park for free

Review 16:Staff were really helpful and friendly, even met one out for a beer in the evening. Rooms are quite old fashioned but had all we needed.

Review 17:Room cramped for occupancy of two people and décor needs updating. The cost of the room did not represent value for money.

Review 18:Very convenient location, good breakfast and pleasant and helpful staff.

Review 19:Our room had a pungent smell that was vile, it did not disappear despite having windows open. It was clean but so basic for how much we were charged (£110 per night) I've paid less for 5 star hotels, so was very dissatisfied with what we had. Also breakfast we were repeatedly being served grey eggs (disgusting to look at) had to keep sending them back. Don't think this is a hotel and is a basic bed and breakfast. No wifi in rooms which you do need as network is so sparse there. Really think you need to consider your future pricing for other customers.

Review 20:Location is great, a stone throw away from tunnel beaches and close walking distance to the coast. Staff were lovely and helpful

Review 21:The WiFi didn't reach all areas of the hotel, but as this was a break, it didn't bother us too much!

Review 22:The location was superb and the hotel staff from the cleaners, to the waiters/waitresses and reception were so willing to please. It felt relaxing to be in the hotel.

Review 23:there are some very basic rooms in the lower part of hotel which I would not recommend however the new owner is planning to improve these. No evening entertainment we went to another hotel nearby for an evenings dancing. Pity this hotel had regular entertainment in the past and has a bar and dance floor. Bad view form front of hotel.

Review 24:Superior room overlooking street very spacious and clean large king sized bed felt very comfortable. Very good breakfast and good dining area. Would stay here again. New owner of hotel has some good ideas for improving and is very helpful to guests

Review 25:We enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable and clean . The breakfast was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Micheal was so helpful and friendly. We would recommend to our friends and family to stay here.

Review 26:Weather..rain rain rain. Wifi in the room, but we bumped into the owner who told us of his plans, which include the wifi upgrade. Bigger fry up would have been nice but that's my only criticism of a lovely hotel.

Review 27:Very friendly staff, very clean hotel.

Review 28:Nothing.

Review 29:One of the best hotel / holiday experiences we've had. It's a great location and the staff were fabulous! The family room was perfect for our needs. The shower/toilet was a little smaller than average, with the basin and mirror in the bedroom, but this did not detract from the room or our stay. The water was a good pressure and temerature. Everything was spotlessly clean too! We will definitely be back.

Review 30:no wifi on the rooms no connection to provider to get internet but that's problems around this quarter only on the lobby you have wifi but is restricted like 10 years ago

Review 31:breakfast

Review 32:Sea gulls bit noisy if u had windows wide open but heyo they lived there 1st and didnt spoil stay !!!

Review 33:Loverly stay cldnt do enough for u next to tunnel beaches 5 mins walk to town great breakfast

Review 34:The staff were fantastic. The owners had taken over running the hotel just days before, but you never would have guessed. They were friendly and attentive, and the hotel was always spotless. Breakfast was good, with lots of choice and plenty of toast! We will go back if (when) we return to Ilfracombe.

Review 35:The breakfast was poor. No cereals or fruit on display. The poached eggs on toast was poor.

Review 36:The owner/manager was very friendly. He was waxing lyrical about the potential of the hotel and the upgrades he was going to undertake

Review 37:We found we were made very welcome by the staff who took the time to chat and laugh with us. It felt like a happy hotel and that had a positive impact on us all.

Review 38:Not a bad experience just a comment. Would prefer a breakfast buffet for cereals and yogurt etc.

Review 39:Really lovely hotel and staff who went out of their way to make the stay a lovely one. Lady at breakfast made a jug of hot chocolate for our grand daughter and a jug of very milky coffee for our grandson. Would definitely stay again.

Review 40:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice comfortable hotel to return to after a day out. Breakfast was particularly good, with lots of choice and quick service.

Review 41:Nothing bad at all but I feel the showers could do with upgrading they weren't very powerful

Review 42:Very good location the staff were friendly and helpful the room was lovely and clean

Review 43:I'm a tall person & the single bed was a bit short & the en-suite shower & toilet was a bit of a squeeze.

Review 44:Great location in centre of Ilfracombe & great value, the staff were very helpful & pleasant. The room was clean with Tea making facility's & biscuit & couldn't fault the cooked breakfast in the morning. All in all, well done Carlton.

Review 45:Had to wait a while to be served my breakfast. I had to ask for it - felt like I was purposely being ignored as I wasn't an old person in a group. When I did ask I am sure that the rude lady in the breakfast room said some thing akin to can you serve that one over there she's bleating for her breakfast. I have encountered this person before when I have stayed. She's not the nicest of people.

Review 46:Lady on reception was very lovely, as was the lady servicing my room. She saw me coming out after seeing my do not disturb sign and she made a point of checking whether I wanted her to go in now that I was off for the day. In terms of value for money and location it's great. It may be dated but it is clean and the bathroom despite not being super modern again is clean. I have used this hotel four times now and I don't think I would go anywhere else

Review 47:It would be better if breakfast was served until a little later on week days.

Review 48:The hotel is in a good position close to town and all attractions. Room was smartly furnished with modern bathroom and shower. Breakfast was excellent with good choice.

Review 49:Whilst the hotel was clean and tidy, the restaurant lacked atmosphere and, unfortunately the inconsiderate behaviour or some other guests meant that we were unable to get to sleep until 4.00 am and we decided to check-out the following morning. It is clearly very difficult for hotel staff to control the behaviour of drunken guests and we received a genuine apology and discount as we checked out, but the incident did nothing to aid a hoped for relaxed weekend!

Review 50:Friendly staff, well prepared and presented evening meal.

Review 51:Claire and Austin (owners) really went the extra mile to dry our wetsuits, provide parking when super busy, and also to ensure we were well taken care of even while a wedding reception was being thrown at the hotel at the same time.

Review 52:This is one of those hotels which is firmly stuck in its 2-star bracket - but nothing wrong with that. Friendly and personal service throughout. Room was basic but immaculately clean and the hotel itself is a well-presented characterful building. The central location is ideal for pretty much everything you'd want to do in the town and the surrounding area and the quiet side street is an added bonus.

Review 53:Didn't want to leave!

Review 54:The cleanest accommodation I have ever stayed at. Staff unbelievably helpful.....and right next door to the wedding venue we were attending.

Review 55:Only that we could not stay much longer

Review 56:The warm welcome - Delicious Food - Brilliant Entertainment - Wonderful company and caring staff who dealt with our every needs making our Christmas stay just perfect.

Review 57:We arrived a little before the 3pm check in, but sat in the lounge area with a lovely pot of tea and pot of coffee which was brought to us as quickly as possibly could be. A very friendly greeting, and shown to our rooms not just given the keys. A wonderful breakfast

Review 58:Nothing, all good.

Review 59:Very efficient member of staff doing a great job on her own, dealing with every aspect of the guest's requirements a very friendly and helpful person, thank you.

Review 60:I found the place to be very tired-looking, rather depressing and dilapidated....i.e. rather stuck in the 1970's. The reception area, dining room and guest rooms have seen better days, and are badly in need of modernizing - (even a lick of paint would make the place 'smile' a bit more!) The shower had barely any power, and was not able to provide consistent heat.

Review 61:Nearness to the Tunnel beaches where I was attending a wedding

Review 62:The only slight niggle being that the Family room my son had was on the first floor over the entertainment room and although there was a very good entertainer performing on the Saturday night, he played his music until nearly 11.20pm, which made it difficult for my very tired 5yo grandson to go to sleep until he had finished.

Review 63:I have stayed at this Hotel on several occasions and always found the Hotel to be clean, comfortable and value for money. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food very good. So I had no fears in bringing my Son and his family to stay there for the first time last weekend and we were not disappointed.

Review 64:Bathroom on second night had a slightly dilapidated corner bath with just a hand-held shower attachment. Parking is a bit tight when the hotel is full; quite easy to get blocked in.

Review 65:Stayed here for 2 nights, got a room each night having booked very late on. Very good price, rooms were clean and breakfast was good. Staff were very helpful.

Review 66:Excellent 2 night stay - very friendly and helpful staff - within walking distance of the town - having the car parking was the main reason for choosing the hotel in the first place

Review 67:We stayed at this hotel for a family wedding and it was perfect for our needs. The staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms were great. Really good value for money.

Review 68:Any niggling complaints would be unjustified in this excellent 2 Star hotel.

Review 69:Excellent breakfast. Great value for money. Good parking. Attentive staff. Quality housekeeping.

Review 70:The decor was very dated (holding onto the Victorian era a little too hard) the double bed in the family room was very small (my partner spent most of the night on the single with my 2 year old as had more space) and finally the breakfast was very small and wasn't brilliant to be honest, left feeling hungrier than when you went in.

Review 71:The staff were very friendly and helpful in all areas and were willing to advise on parking and other difficulties there may have been locally, the bar was reasonably well stocked and there was a lot of space and seating available which was nice not having to sit ontop of other guests

Review 72:Electric toilets really noisey. Woken by other guests toilet being flushed. Nice hotel but not really worth the money paid. £45 per person was pricey for small room, scuffed furniture.

Review 73:Staff were very friendly, location great. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 74:Everything that a hotel should be. We only stayed two nights but we will be staying again when we are in the area. The location and the layout of the hotel was perfect for our stay and the staff were all helpful. Thank you

Review 75:When we came down to breakfast on the Sunday towards the end of the alloted time period, none of the tables had been cleared, so we had to hang around a bit for one to be made up & had to keep asking for missing items such as butter& milk.

Review 76:When arriving at the Carlton the Receptionist was very welcoming, helpful & polite. The room was very clean with tea & coffee making facilities. The Hotel also had Wi-fi and a night bar, very handy when you come back from your late night stroll. The cooked breakfast was very good & staff polite. All in all i would recommend the Carlton when staying in Ilfracombe.

Review 77:Picky really but, family room we has was quite hot on arrival. Good breakfast but, egg a little under cooked for my wife's liking

Review 78:Very friendly staff, quaint building on a reasonable location

Review 79:On suite bathroom was basic, shower was poor. Door to the room had a very strong spring, and we were unable to stop it slamming, all the other rooms had the same which was disturbing us late at night or in morning.

Review 80:Tasty breakfast, served very quickly, room small but bed very large and comfortable, Quality was high and well run, Staff were friendly and considerate.

Review 81:The shower was difficult to get a sensible temperature and rather slow and we sometimes had difficulty parking, but then the exercise does you good…. : )

Review 82:The hotel was clean and our room was always clean and tidy on our return each evening. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The breakfasts were always served very quickly which was helpful as we were booked on trips.

Review 83:Hotel is ready for a makeover. Parking is a bit of an issue.

Review 84:Although this hotel is dated, it was very clean and tidy and the staff were all very friendly and professional

Review 85:wi-fi working only in Reception.

Review 86:I like where this hotel is based. Near City and just on the corner of the tunnel beach. Love this place :) Very clean and tidy.

Review 87:They put ham on my vegetarian breakfast and when I said I couldn't eat it they just took the ham off the top!!

Review 88:The location - off the main road so no traffic noise but very close to everything

Review 89:The room was hot and the windows did not open very much for ventilation. Suggest air conditioning or double glazing would greatly improve comfort and go a long way to block out the incessant cries of the seagulls. Felt the hotel was a little overpriced.

Review 90:Helpful and friendly staff. superior room was spacious and comfortable

Review 91:Helpful staff but venue interior is dated. Big heavy LOUD fire doors. No air con. Very hot. Woken in early hours by loud seagulls. Lift is bizarre. No proper internet, wifi is restricted and phone signal is poor. Good base for us as location was ideal. All hotels /b&bs in the area seemed the same in terms of being dated in style.

Review 92:location - quiet (except sea gulls. but they live here), staff - very helpful, parking is available, but if full more is close by, its an old victorian building, but so is Ilfracombe

Review 93:Nothing really to moan about apart from the coffee with breakfast, not a great taste. Just stick to the tea instead.

Review 94:Hotel was in great location, just short walk from the centre. Room was fairly small but had everything we needed and bed was comfortable.

Review 95:Room very cold

Review 96:Friendly staff

Review 97:The breakfast wasn't great for me. My wife liked it.

Review 98:The owner was very pleasant and keen to help. He seems to be a great guy

Review 99:Very dated I need of a refurb not worth £90 for twin room more like £60 a fair walk to the harbour

Review 100:Pleasant staff clean

Review 101:Just the free Wi-Fi just poor

Review 102:Nice and friendly and clean

Review 103:Tiny , twin room! Hard mattress. No Wifi in rooms.

Review 104:Friendly stafff

Review 105:Bed had quilt with a heavy throw which seemed odd.Car parking bit limited.

Review 106:Good price.Location was ok.

Review 107:Evening meal with choice of only 3 courses

Review 108:Location, friendliness

Review 109:Friendly and helpful staff

Review 110:Lift

Review 111:City

Review 112:Poor experience with bookings.com website

Review 115:Room decor needs updating .

Review 116:Staff very helpful and gave relevant information .

Review 117:Lovely welcome the food was excellent. Very clean.

Review 118:A little outdated, just needs a freshen up.

Review 119:Excellent location , clean and a good breakfast.
