Reviews for The West Country Inn

Review 1:Nothing

Review 2:Very comfortable room and friendly staff. The hotelier even offered to keep the kitchen open for us when we were arriving late. Excellent food in proper portions. Thank you

Review 3:The room was freezing. Staff attitude was that they would serve at their convenience. Little things like the biscuits not being replaced which at £110 per night was a bit mean. They have a notice outside offering all day breakfasts but guests have to eat by 10.

Review 4:Convenient location

Review 5:Booking.com did not notify of my booking. Luckily they accommodated so this will be why I had to have the room clean and available. This was unfortunately on the roAd so noise and heat an issue.

Review 6:Food was tasty

Review 7:Bedding very worn and ill matching. Grubby pillow under pillow case. On two occasions came down for breakfast just a few minutes before agreed time to find everything locked up. Breakfast unappetizingly 'warm'.

Review 8:The location of the Inn is good for travellers,

Review 9:The duvet on the single beds were not quite wide enough as they kept sliding off during the night. However, the duvet on the double bed was comfortable.

Review 10:The building was an original old coaching inn which was updated but retained the historic atmosphere. The staff were friendly and polite. The food was good.

Review 11:At the time we were there, they were experiencing a shortage of staff, which meant service wasn't quite as good aswe know it can be.

Review 12:Excellent food, friendy staff, and very helpful and accomadating.

Review 13:The greeting we received "you're too early". It was only a half hour early but had to wait 2 hours for room to be ready.

Review 14:The quirkyness. The food was good.

Review 15:Twice found room being serviced during very late afternoon when we just wanted to relax after a days walking and exploring. Minor thing really but unusual timing in our experience.

Review 16:This Inn is quite isolated. Sits under a wonderfully dark night sky. No ambient light to blur the stars. Good menu and choice of food and wines. Ice cold beer a treat. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast a good start to the day.

Review 17:Lack of staff especially in the bar, Menu is very basic as are the specials nothing to get excited about. Noisy saniflow toilet system, not much power in shower.

Review 18:Room was clean and comfortable.

Review 19:Food was awful. Staff were unfriendly. Wifi was rubbish. Staff kept the hotel locked at weird times of day meaning we got locked out. Cleaners left our room open for anyone to come in. Poorly stocked tea and coffee, loo roll etc. Not worth price paid all in all.

Review 20:The bedrooms were a good size and were comfy.

Review 21:Service slow at breakfast. We are back from a day out to find the premises closed and we could not get in. Eventually the chef let us in after 20 mins.

Review 22:Value for money and location

Review 23:Right by A39 so front rooms at least a bit noisy Slightly better sausage etc at brekkie would make a big difference

Review 24:Friendly service Reasonably comfortable bed Good bar OK brekkie

Review 25:Right on the A39 so some traffic noise. Bathrooms a bit tired. Breakfast not brilliant.

Review 26:Run by dynamic french hostess, Francoise, a French Inn with English overtones, this place is amazing. Don't come expecting style or class, its all quite scruffy, but the 'Specials Food' is exceptional - never been asked what sort of wine I want in my sauce before, and Francoise makes delectable puds herself.

Review 27:The bedding was dirty, the room was old and dated and the mattress very old and not comfy, the place was way over prised, the fan on the roof is so noisy you can't sleep, its just an awful place to stay

Review 28:Nothing at all

Review 29:I had to rely on buses and taxis to get there so if you don't have a car, avoid it, it's in the middle of nowhere and there didn't seem to be any good walking/hiking routes near if you like that. I genuinely was worried I get stranded there as my check-out was sunday. If you are looking for peace and quiet, there are much better and more scenic places in North Devon, this is literally in the middle of fields without anything interesting in sight.

Review 30:The "spa" of the place is a self-operated jacuzzi machine but the great thing about that is you can connect your own USB device to listen to your own music as loud as you want, that was the only thing that made my stay bearable. They also have gym room in the same separate building to the main pub.

Review 31:Bed was agonisingly hard - though we were assured that no-one else had ever complained. Shower was too small too

Review 32:Olde Worlde building. Staff were friendly and helpful.....until we complained about the bed.

Review 33:WIFI dont work well between these ancient thick walls.

Review 34:Great room, bath and beds, very nice an helpful staff, and a good place to dine and relaxe after a long drive from Cornwall or a long day out in Clovelly and Hartland Quay (which are both MUST to be seen in that area).

Review 35:A fantastic country inn, we stayed for 3 nights 26th-29th August, on reading other reviews I was a little worried, but we had nothing to worry about if you want 5 star book the Hilton, if u want a lovely cosy b&b book here, we had a warm welcome, a lovely room and to say on main road you hardly heard the traffic, breakfast was lovely even when my partner asked for beans on toast with cheese. Of course your going to get creaky floors it's a 17th century building, the shower a little tight but I'm not so little myself, if you want a nice clean cosy country inn this is the place, only takes 15 mins and your in bude and the same for bideford, I will recommend to all family and friends. We will return when we go down again, keep up the good work. Xx

Review 36:Room smelled damp / fusty. Articles in room left from previous occupants. Bathroom very old, shower was a sprinkle. Charging far too much for accommodation like this.

Review 37:Car parking

Review 38:Creaky floor boards Staff over friendly Ran out of meals on the menu Very noisy every other guest had to walk past our room to get to theres

Review 39:The beer

Review 40:Family room above the bar, some noice. Mattresses need replacement though.

Review 41:Close to Clovelly, good Family room with enough space for all. Good eating (for sure the curry) and child friendly.

Review 42:The restaurant service. Food was ordered 15 minutes later. Very poor vegetarian menu. Two of us got served one hour and thirty minutes later, the rest another twenty minutes later. Orders were incomplete, but included in the final bill. Apologies and excuses felt half hearted.

Review 43:Lovely room

Review 44:pre booked with confirmation . No record of booking when we arrived.By luck happened to have 2 rooms. No poached eggs available. premixed scrambled AWFUL. No TV remote.

Review 45:crazy French lady

Review 46:the place is old and needs repairing to modernize. Whole building creeks when someone walks in passages. Plumbing is ancient and very noisy from next door.It is isolated, nothing in the adjacent area.Price is very high compared to other much better B and Bs

Review 47:the one lady in charge was very pleasant but is only one doing everything For a certain group, there is a bar and pool room and small lounge

Review 48:Friendly staff Great ambiance

Review 49:Staff especially Laura was exceptionally pleasant & friendly and decor was fantastic.

Review 50:Breakfast a bit small.

Review 51:Let me in late. Thank you.

Review 52:I was more than happy with every aspect of the accommodation.

Review 53:The staff were very friendly

Review 54:Very good evening meal wide choice nicely presented A friendly landlady

Review 55:Nice place nice people but heavily under staffed. Disapointing.

Review 56:Ideal Location, and Laura was very accommodating, as I was going to a wedding so had arrived early, and she checked me in so I could change.

Review 57:Pretty basic , but expensive. No atmosphere in the bar.

Review 58:The staff were lovely, you had an instant repor with them. The meals were lovely and really nicely presented.

Review 59:Low ceiling into bathroom.

Review 60:Gorgeous inn interior. Friendly service. Good breakfast. Comfortable bed. All very cleanly.

Review 61:Staff where pleasant and helpful. Food excellent and a good bar.

Review 62:good service

Review 63:Everything

Review 64:Good Value. Staff very friendly, and food good

Review 65:Creaky floorboards but it is 16th century so something you should expect.

Review 66:Food was very good

Review 67:charging for services not provided

Review 68:breakfast

Review 69:Nothing to dislike.

Review 70:Warm friendly atmosphere.

Review 71:Everything we needed

Review 72:The bed. The food.

Review 73:Everything as I expected from a pub b & b

Review 74:The pub served nice food in a good atmosphere.

Review 75:There wasn't enough staff to cope with the guests. Food didn't live up to the price nor the wait for it.

Review 76:Location

Review 77:Just the creaky floorboards - but this is only to be expected in such an old building.

Review 78:Spotlessly clean room, good quality bed linen and mattress and luxurious en-suite shower room. Really comfortable bed and pillows, a quiet room and heavy black-out curtains ensured we had a great night's sleep.

Review 79:I could not fault any part of my trip. Staff were friendly and made me feel very welcome. Great food and lovely feel to the place. Would defiantly recommend.

Review 80:We booked the hotel specifically so we could bring our dog. I rang and spoke to someone who confirmed this would be fine although there was a surcharge (no problem). The lady was very friendly and told me about the new spa and gym they had. However, when we arrived we realised that the hotel is far from dog friendly with no rooms on the ground floor and the room we had was a long way from the back entrance. The only way we could take our dog out for a toilet break first thing the next morning was to go out the fire exit and wedge the door as no-one appeared until 0830. The hotel was almost empty and there was a man and woman running it. The man was friendly but the woman couldn't have been the friendly individual I'd spoken to over the telephone as everything appeared to be a bit of a chore despite the fact they weren't busy. Neither of them bothered to tell us about the gym and spa, which we only remembered after we'd left! We were booked in for 2 nights but left after the first night. Admittedly my husband wasn't feeling well but neither of us could face another night there and we went to a brilliant Travelodge instead!

Review 81:The food was good and reasonably priced. The room was clean and attractive but small for a double.

Review 82:Everywhere in the accommodation was very cold, except the room where we slept. Cold in the bar, cold in the dining room, cold in the corridors.

Review 83:Location. Big car park.

Review 84:Everything!! I have stayed at this hotel a number of times when in the area and it really is a great place to stay, the staff, food and rooms are all 1st class, would highly recommend.

Review 85:The Landlady was very brusque, the standard of training for staff was very poor, cleanliness could have been a lot better, severe shortage of staff. Rooms not ready for when advertised.

Review 86:Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful especially the nice French lady and a girl called Ellie.

Review 87:- room windows opening to main road A9 : noisy if traffic even with windows closed - room fees different from Booking.com, had to ask for refund for the difference

Review 88:- nice big room (room n°3) for 5 persons - restaurant for diner at hotel (nothing else nearby) - easy parking - wi-fi

Review 89:Why are they calling it Clovelly? that is not the address!!! Poor service : unable to get into our rooms when we arrived, not at all welcoming. Just not enough staff to cope, and staff not trained to deal with guests. Air of depression. Water pressure very low in the shower, no hot water on second morning and the towels could have done with a boil wash. Kettle leaked water everywhere.

Review 90:Bed comfortable. Good range of toiletries in shower-room. Lots of milk and good biscuits provided.

Review 91:One small problem ( 2 bedside light bulbs not working ). Changed within 20 minuets).

Review 92:Friendly staff, warm welcome. Bedroom comfortable and clean. Bathroom clean and well stocked Good breakfasts.

Review 93:Bar full of flies was impossible to enjoy dinner. Food was typical bar food nothing special. No water pressure in showers, noisy rooms until 11pm when bar closes, generally felt very overpriced. Breakfast staff slightly condescending - made it feel like it was our fault they hadn't laid enough tables for breakfast.

Review 94:Great location, easy to find.

Review 95:No restrictors on low window in room, would make more child friendly if added some simple jaclocks, had to shut windows because of this and hotel had no fans, happened to be the hottest day of the year!!! .Also charged £10 extra a night for a 4 year old to sleep in a blow up bed. Not a bad hotel just wouldn't stay there again.

Review 96:Very clean. Good breakfast.

Review 97:The shower was badly in need of replacement. Landlady seemed a little preoccupied and rather forgetful!

Review 98:Spacious but cosy warm room with plenty of hot water. Up to date amenities (apart from the shower in our room). Comfortable king-sized bed. Lovely view over the open countryside. Excellent food. Very relaxed atmosphere. A very lovely, quaint old Inn.

Review 99:Everything!! Really nice hotel, very welcoming the room and food were excellent, will definitely stay again, I would highly recommend a stay a this hotel.

Review 100:We enjoyed the friendly staff, comfy rooms, delicious english breakfast served to us in the mornings. Had a peaceful atmosphere about it and would be happy to come back and recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in this area. Also loved the history surrounding the building we stayed in! All up loved it!

Review 101:Rooms were tidy and basically clean until you looked under and behindthe beds and they hadn't vacuumed for ages. Food was reasonable, barand restaurant area was cold. Overpriced. Dog owners beware as it sayson Booking.com that pets are free, but on the Hotel website it says theycharge £12.00 per dog. We didn't pay but they did try to charge us.

Review 102:Not a lot ! 300 years old and looked it.

Review 103:We were greeted by a young girl and very young boy. The boy about 6yrswas left in charge in the bar! While the girl showed us to our room. Thebed was definately very uncomfortable and we had a very sleepless nightand with a lot of miles to travel the next day - we were extremely tiredby the time we reached our destination. It would pay to put in queen orking size beds with a better mattress. Small doubles are not the thingthese days. Could not get sandwiches on arrival after our journey--everything was with chips.

Review 104:The age of the Inn and location which was very convenient for us

Review 105:Once located, it was the right distance to Clovelly village which we wanted to see, however the address was very difficult to find with a GPS. Nice country pub, probably more suited to families.

Review 106:Food,drink,accommodation were brilliant. This was our second visit as weare walking the South West Coastal Path.Once again the landlady couldnot have been more helpful.Still did not see the ghost !! We probablyslept too well!!

Review 107:The staff were very welcoming, friendly and always smiling even though at times they were run off their feet. The food was excellent and we would definately return.

Review 108:We are walking the South West Coastal Path and this location was ideal. The staff at the Inn are all very friendly, the food and drink excellent, and our accommodation comfortable in an old worldly room. In particularthe Landlady Laura could not have been more helpful. Our onlydisappointment was that we did not see the ghost !!

Review 109:The room could do with an upgrade. The bed was quite old and a bit lumpy and the bedding has seen better days.

Review 110:the Staff were great, very helpful and friendly.

Review 111:Excellent location for our friends wedding. The owner and her granddaughter made us feel welcome. The food and facilities were very good.

Review 112:The price of £85 was too much, the owner was on holiday in Florida and left the business to her very young daughter. God knows how she would have coped if the hotel was busy On our first night 3 rooms were used and I think only 1 on our second I believe they need to look at their web page. We stayed at this hotel due its close proximity to Clovelly ie 5 miles [long way to walk]. The locals were not positive about the hotel, hence being empty, I think they need to do more market research

Review 113:The hotel was fine and empty

Review 114:It is right on the main road (a39), though in fairness minimal noisefrom vehicles as they pass infrequently.

Review 115:Good value Inn/Motel/Pub on main road serving food also. Room wascomfortable warm & cosy with ensuite & fab views, staff were friendlyand helpful.

Review 116:Extremely convenient location, ideally suited the business purpose forwhich it was selected. Clean and reasonably comfortable with veryfriendly staff and quite tasty food. Good value for money.

Review 117:Very helpful owner/staff. Excellent evening meal and breakfast. Nice to relax in the hotel hot tub

Review 118:Furnishings needed updating in the rooms.

Review 119:Lovely olde worlde inn. In a desolate but accessible area.

Review 120:I liked the fact my dog was welcome

Review 121:great value friendly and helpful staff
