Reviews for Roman Camp Country House Hotel

Review 1:Ambience,building is full of neuks and crannies with interesting decor, open log fires making for a warm welcome.Food is first class with interesting menu

Review 2:Very narrow (ancient!) entrance door to reception. Bedside lights could not be switched off independently so had to get out of bed after reading. Very limited car parking near to reception - not much fun on a wet day, and very narrow entrance with bollards designed to wreck your car! Never anyone at the reception desk - always had to ring the bell.

Review 3:Comfortable, warm spacious bedroom with super king bed. Nice open fires in public rooms for cold wintry days. Helpful staff allowed an hour extra before checkout without charge, which was appreciated.

Review 4:Went there for a weekend break. The hotel has its own garden and located just right next to the river. Was sitting in the drawing room in front of the fire reading a book and drinking tea. It is amazing. Would definitely come back.

Review 5:For the class of hotel, everything felt a bit old and run down. Rooms could do with being updated and the staff, whilst efficient were never friendly. It was quiet at the hotel and therefore lacking in 'atmosphere'.

Review 6:A good hotel.. Public lounge area is lovely with roaring fires and very homely feel.

Review 7:Nothing

Review 8:It's an absolute joy to stay here. Wonderful surroundings, excellent staff and outstanding food. Total peace and quiet stepping back in time from the 21st century.

Review 9:very tired looking. new carpets & fresh paint needed. cooked breakfast was a bit disappointing and small. decor in the dining room looked tired. hotel, and in particular the rooms are not great for tall people. I'm 6ft 4, and couldn't fit in my room. amenities aren't great, public toilets are a bit dirty. our room bathroom was described as luxurious tiled interior with spa bath. again, I could barely fit in the room or the shower, and the water pressure was very weak. the bath looked dirty and was not a "spa bath". I'd say it definitely isn't worth £300 for 2 nights. whole place could do with a high end amenity upgrade, whilst keeping the quirky romantic feel of the public rooms.

Review 10:tranquil location. quirky look and feel, therefore interesting. staff were nice.

Review 11:Staff were all very attentive although abit quiet!

Review 12:Quiet location, beautiful grounds and building full of history. Food well presented and first class dining.

Review 13:A very expensive restaurant, although highly rated. Would have liked to have had a Bar food menu as well. Instead we chose one of the other highly rated restaurants nearby and thoroughly enjoyed a lower cost dinner.

Review 14:Although only a 0 minute from the town of Callander, the location of the hotel is wonderful, set in its own gardens and the surrounding countryside made for a delightful break.

Review 15:Not a bad review, but it should be noted somewhere, when the reception is closed, if there is not 24 hour staff. If not for sheer luck, I would have had a reservation, but no way to actually get the room. I booked with help from someone and had to find the place (that was a bit difficult - look for a dark "alley" between 2 buildings); I was unable to find the "reception" entrance, because light turned out - I went to where the only light was, the "staff entrance"; and waited, and quietly called (it was about 11 p.m.) and that it when I was helped, although at first I was not believed, as she had only recently turned off the computer and the reservation had not shown up. When she went back it was there. Let me say, the reason for the late booking was the fact that there were no rooms to be had within miles upon miles from Aberdeen down and over, due to some major conference that was unknown to us travellers.

Review 16:Wonderful lady at reception who went back to her office to confirm we had booked, then helped us with our bags, even though it was past her finishing time.

Review 17:Perhaps there could have been a couple of alternative to set menu.

Review 18:Staff and ambience of hotel staff were excellent and professional, the quality of food was excellent and well presented

Review 19:On initial arrival, I wouldn't say the staff member (male) was particularly welcoming - not rude or anything but just a bit officious and not warm - a bit brusque!

Review 20:The building itself is lovely, as are the beautiful grounds and gardens. Loved the public rooms and the decor is very tasteful and opulent. Especially loved the open fires and the abundance of candles that were always lit - gave such a warm glow to everywhere and meant that the public spaces were very inviting places to sit in.

Review 21:Was really looking forward to the spa bath, but it wasn't clean. The jets produced lots of scum and skin cells. I did raise it with the front of house.

Review 22:Location excellent, grounds spectacular. Staff very friendly and willing to help when asked.

Review 23:Received last minute discount on room so price was good (but no breakfast). Towels and room were worn. if I had paid full price I would have been somewhat unhappy.

Review 24:wonderful grounds

Review 25:The fees are a little high and eating in the restaurant was very expensive so we didn't even tried it, only for breakfast, which was included in the fare and was a nice cooked morning meal.

Review 26:The location is stunning and the hotel is in very nice conditions, given that is a beautiful old place.

Review 27:Our towels were quite worn with strings hanging from them. They were replaced with a bit better ones. Time for new ones! The mattress was a bit soft for us. It seems they have new staff who are still being trained.

Review 28:Our meals were outstanding. The ambiance was lovely.

Review 29:Evening meal - OK, it's AA 2 rosette, thus expensive. I must avoid highly rated AA Rosette restaurants!! Limited choice and couldn't find much that I was keen to choose!!

Review 30:A very quirky hotel, extraordinary building. Delightful grounds. Excellent breakfast, pleasant staff.

Review 31:We had no bad experiences, but the dinner menu we had did not really live up to the cost. The food was well selected and adequately prepared, with a lot of detail to presentation and service, but somehow was more about expensive ingredients than good taste.

Review 32:The staff were very welcoming and we enjoyed the beautiful rooms we could sit in before dinner

Review 33:Thought dinner was on the expensive side.

Review 34:Beautiful old building just oozing with character. The fires were lit as were the candles. Cosy just doesn't cover it. Loved the peacock strutting about too! I didn't want to leave.

Review 35:The room size and style, comfort of the bed, staff attitude and attentiveness were all fantastic. A very relaxed, beautiful and high class place to have a wonderful time!

Review 36:Dining room had no atmosphere. Some background music would be nice. My scrambled eggs were lovely but cold!!

Review 37:Lovely hotel. Packed with history. Huge comfy bed. Big deep bath with jets. Good Location. Nice grounds to walk in.

Review 38:we were not well received upon arrival. A dour gentleman in dark suit thrust us a clipboard and told us to fill it in then led us to our room without any warm words of welcome or even showing us around. When I explained we had asked for a first floor room (ours was on ground floor) he said that this was the room we had been assigned - end of story ! What appeared to be a small decanter of whisky in or room turned out to be port - silly since all hotels offer whisky and given the price they could have too. Staff on Monday morning much nicer - especially young man serving breakfast but otherwise quite indifferent to our presence - a sense of simply there to take our money - rather disappointing

Review 39:Beautiful surroundings, lovely sitting rooms

Review 40:Rooms a bit too cluttered and fussy

Review 41:- lots of little extras - teas, coffees, bath robe, sherry, - jacuzzi bath - good heating and loads of hot water

Review 42:Only one small grumble is that the pillows were a bit lumpy.

Review 43:The general comfort and appeal of the public rooms, the friendly and helpful staff and the magical setting.

Review 44:nothing spoiled out experience whatsoever!!!!

Review 45:The best part about our stay was the fact we were given Lady Esher's room! This is utterly amazing - closely followed by the quality of all the food and staff attentiveness - nothing was disappointing, everything was wonderful - been before and will be again as soon as we can!!!!

Review 46:Our whole experience was delightful, all the staff welcoming and very helpful, hotel magical, food exquisite, grounds beautiful especially the walled garden, the peacocks an added bonus

Review 47:Price of dinner a bit expensive at £55 each. Carpets in hallway badly soiled which makes a musty smell in corridors but please don't be put off by this it's only a comment for the management.

Review 48:Eccentric ambience. Excellent ,polite staff. Breakfast very good indeed. Well worth a stay if in this area. This is a beautiful old hunting lodge , well worth the visit.

Review 49:In a week of touring Scotland, this takes first place for accommodations. Situated near a river on grounds that seemed almost magical, the hotel is everything and more than promised. The hotel dates from 1645, was originally a hunting lodge for the king of Scotland. Breakfast was lovely and our room was absolutely charming. The concierge was also wonderful. Best experience ever!

Review 50:Nothing! - although we could have done with some lighting above the wash hand basin ( the Yellow Parlour).

Review 51:The room was so big and the bed was huge! Beautifully decorated with traditional furnishings. Loved the decanter with sherry- nice touch. Very quiet and peaceful- overlooking the box hedge gardens. The bathroom was great with walk in shower and a Jacuzzi bath! Food was expensive but beautiful- 5 courses and canapes!

Review 52:My sister is in her eighties and a bit unsure on her feet. She found climbing the stairs using the rope banister rail was not easy.

Review 53:We loved the ambience, location and the cuisine. The sherry in the bedroom and fragrant toiletries were lovely touches.

Review 54:Some will say that it's a bit dated but for us it only added to the atmosphere so not necessarily a negative.

Review 55:Very high level of friendly service. Exploring around the hotel was fantastic (lounge, bar, library, looking at art and photography on the walls). Even better was exploring the grounds and discovering secret gardens.

Review 56:Enjoyed walking in the grounds with our dog. The relaxed atmosphere and the very friendly and helpful staff made it an enjoyable beginning to our holiday.

Review 57:It is a very old building but some areas need some attention, like the paintwork in the rooms and if you venture further into the gardens they appear very neglected. With a restaurant on site, there is a fantastic opportunity to grow all their own fresh produce

Review 58:The beautiful old part of the building. Very quaint. Lovely roaring fires! Oh, and the peacocks!

Review 59:I didn't like the fact that you had to use another entrance at Nite which had no lighting in the corridors which was actully quite scary and hard to find our way about.. The breakfast was very poor soo not worth £15 per person plus we ordered toast which never came..

Review 60:Hotel was warm and inviting very friendly and the cleanliness was excellent

Review 61:Staff were very helpful. A lovely warm fire to sit beside and enjoy pre-dinner drinks. The meal was fantastic, courses were served at a nice rate and we enjoyed our coffee by the fire afterwards - an excellent stay.

Review 62:No a la carte meals. GBP 55 for evening meal with no alternative is not good.Same applies for breakfast. I'm sure the meals are great but we ate down town for all meals where we could pick and choose. And pay less than half the price.

Review 63:Good location in small town on edge of the Trossachs comfortable room and common areas. Nice gardens and spacious property on the river quite a few pubs and restaurants in town which is 10 minute easy walk

Review 64:The night watchman was quite aggressive/unpleasant as he guarded the doorway into the hotel most evenings. Although the dinner experience was superb, it was the only dinner option (and expensive) so we only did it once. We went out to local restaurants/pubs which were fine.

Review 65:The bedroom was large with a lovely view of the grounds. Complimentary water, apples and tea/coffee and biscuits. Lounges were luxurious with open fires and conservatory pleasant to sit in.

Review 66:The food is costly, at £55 table d'hote with wines to match. That said, unlike some fine dining it does actually deliver what it promises: so it's not that it's bad value, just that it's expensive. And since the place is within walking distance of Callander's main (er.. only) street, dining out is easy.

Review 67:I've stayed in lots of country-house type hotels and this is typical of the best of them. Comfortable public rooms (the library in particular in lovely, but the drawing room is very pleasant too). Comfortable bedrooms (ours was a "superior" room). Attentive friendly but professional service throughout.

Review 68:The wine list was a little bit expensive.

Review 69:Gorgeous setting, Absolutely first class service and amazing food. We were married here in 2005 & had the most amazing wedding. Returned for our 10th anniversary and were not disappointed. The house & grounds are beautiful, it's like stepping back in time and you soon forget the modern world outside. Our bedroom was romantic with a marble bathroom and jacuzzi. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. Roman Camp is known for it's excellent food and we weren't disappointed. We opted for the 7 course taster menu at £55 each. Each course was introduced and all were excellent. We then were served coffee in the library in front of an open fire, very homely.

Review 70:All staff a credit. Food was excellent. Public areas are all lovely and very well done. The value for money was excellent with lots of detail and extras in the bedrooms which were nice touches

Review 71:Dinner was good but drink and food a little overpriced

Review 72:The staff were very attentive though the hotel was quiet, so can only judge on that. Roaring fires and sherry in room all very nice too. Enjoyed stay a lot.

Review 73:One of the best hotels we have ever stayed. Booked for the night after proposing to my girlfriend on Ben A'an. Couldn't have chosen a better setting. Staff were excellent and helped with setting up flowers and champagne for our arrival. The suite we stayed in had everything you could hope for and even turned out the Beatles had stayed in the same room which was a cool surprise.

Review 74:Loved the calm and peace that oused from this establishment. Comfortable lounges and seated areas. Roaring logfires to retire to. Efficient and attentive but unobtrusive staff. Quality food with every effort to meet requirements and tastes

Review 75:Wish I could've stayed longer!

Review 76:Room was huge and very comfortable. Staff were friendly and made sure we had a relaxing break away! Scenery was beautiful and it's a stones throw away from the Main Street. Dinner was sensational and well worth the money! Absolute heaven.

Review 77:We never dined here, as we felt the menu was a little over priced at £55 per head for a 4 course meal, then wine costs on top. I am sure the food was lovely, but it was just a little bit out of our scope. A menu with a range of different foods would have been good, and gave people the option to maybe only go for one or two courses. Room costs at full price, again, very expensive and overpriced I would say for what it is.

Review 78:Quaint atmosphere about the place. It is an older building, but with a lot of character. Shower room was also very well presented. We got a good room rate as we booked last minute. Staff were friendly and helpful, so cannot fault it.

Review 79:Whilst the food was of a high standard both menus on offer were eye wateringly expensive and both elaborate. Flexibility in this area would have been welcome.

Review 80:The hotel is beautifully appointed, tastefully decorated with several lounge areas, two with open fires and a very relaxing ambience.

Review 81:The service was old school and made you feel special, we ended up here after a busy day and totally relaxed sitting in the drawing room, watching the river. Location is perfect with a wee wander round the local village adding to the experience. The food was second to none definitely worthy of its reputation and will be back. We were in the sundial room and I had the best sleep in a hotel for ages.

Review 82:Lack of staff tried to get an evening drink on 2 nights no one around Waited for room key after day out given by a handy man! Room exceptionaly hot no thermostat to turn down windows could not be opened as a ground floor room and nothing to stop an intruder gaining entry Underfloor heating in bathroom not working w Fruit appeared on last day No bathrobes Food in restaurant very overpriced pigs head starter £18

Review 83:Quiet area Nice gardens and river frontage Comfortable bed Good breakfast freshly cooked although the hotel was very quiet

Review 84:We paid £420 for two nights B&B (it was during the Ryder Cup) - but the room (Lord Esher) was tiny - barely enough room for two people and one morning they forgot our breakfast completely - so a fabulous hotel and location but pricey.!!

Review 85:The breakfast and dinner were amazing. The location was great - and so quiet even though just off the main road. The staff were really helpful.

Review 86:We liked: The library, tea rooms and restaurant. Our bedroom suite had a wonderful jacuzzi. The staff were excellent, organising fishing trip with half days notice. Head of staff, was maticulous to all our needs.

Review 87:Nothing of significance. But the coo0ked breakfast was a bit cool and could perhaps have benefitted from a hotter hotplate in the kitchen.

Review 88:The total environment, including the surroundings and interior decor were delightful.

Review 89:We found the wifi wasn't consistently available in our room but excellent in the lounges.

Review 90:Roman Camp is in the lovely town of Callander so near lots of interesting places in the Trossachs. Take a stroll through the pretty gardens and along the river bank - very peaceful. We had a delicious dinner one night in the restaurant too.

Review 91:The room (The Studio) was quite small, particularly the bathroom.

Review 92:The hotel maintains a genuine air of a bygone age and feels more like a country home than commercial hotel. Beuatiful location with lovely gardens yet still within walking distance of the town centre.

Review 93:My mattress was a bit too firm for me but just personal preference.

Review 94:The hotel's individuality with real character makes you feel like yhe stay is an experience. The staff are ready to helppolite without bring intrusive. It is worth a walk around the grounds before / after eating. We decided to have afternoon tea for a change instead of an evening meal- you need to be really hungry as it was extensive/ service excellent and the quality of food divine . would definitely recommend. There was a small wedding taking place the day we were there- however the staff remained attentive. Excellent breakfast served until 9.45 am so very relaxing and a great finish to our stay.

Review 95:The bathroom, two small steps you might miss. Kind of awkward shower.

Review 96:We had the Yellow Parlour room, very large and confortable. Beautiful gardens. Nice staff, great breakfast.

Review 97:It's an old house with long, narrow, complicated corridors and stairs. Everything is a bit dark inside.

Review 98:Very friendly reception, excellent breakfest, very quiet location with comfortable room and bed. Suffficent parking space and nice garden.

Review 99:Beautiful hotel set in glorious grounds, just a few minutes' walk from the centre of charming Callander. The library and sitting room were lovely - we enjoyed a relaxing whisky, reading our respective books, looking out over the river as the sun set. The restaurant is fabulous.

Review 100:Shame that its not really dog friendly. We couldn't take our dog anywhere but the room. Cuisine pretends to be Michelin starred but sadly isn't. Bathroom needs light at mirror and hot water to run a bath took about 30 minutes and toilet wouldn't flush. TV should have Sky etc

Review 101:Hotel has a great feel and look. Wonderful gardens near the river and walled garden. Impressive common areas, lounge dining room and library. Room ambience (Yellow Parlour) was great.

Review 102:The hotel is amazing. Our room and bathroom were clean, spacious yet cosy and beautifully decorated. The public rooms make you feel as if you have stepped back in time, loved the open fireplaces. The grounds are wonderful, loved walking through them and down to the river. The meals we had in the restaurant were superb. The service was friendly and first class with great attention to detail. I would thoroughly recommend this gorgeous hotel to anyone!

Review 103:The lighting in my bedroom was very poor impossible to read a book in bed. Same in the restaurant.

Review 104:The 4 course dinner ead exceptional although at £55 a bit of a shock to the system. However every course was cooked beautifully and served exquisitely. Could not be faulted.

Review 105:The price of the fixed 6 course menu in the restaurant is exorbitant and in no relation to the quality. Breakfast only average at best. Suggest dinner in the Callander Meadows instead which was excellent and reasonably priced.

Review 106:The quiet, the river, the country manor setting transporting you back in time. Excellent location from which to explore the Trossachs National Park , the Stirling Palace ,the Sunblane Cathedral, the Drummond Castle Gardens in Crieff and the Scone Palace in Perth. Short walk to the centre of Callander.

Review 107:The hotel is very dated and in need of refurbishment, carpets dirty, the room had a fusty smell. Breakfast in the morning was very disorganised. Our cooked breakfast was brought to is before our tea and orange juice, then we were offered croissants after we had finished! And the waiting time was ridiculous! Very dissapointing! Very over priced and NOT 4 Star!!!

Review 108:Beautiful gardens and grounds. Lovely building and great location.

Review 109:Fruit within room were badly bruised and passed there best. Two single beds put together to form double/king!?

Review 110:Ambiance, garden grounds & breakfast!

Review 111:The pillows in the bed they were lumpy and really unpleasant to sleep on, I also found the mattress very hard but that could be a personal matter. It would have been nice to have more information on arrival about breakfast time, the fact we could have an alternative to the restaurant menu and that there would be limited staff on a Sunday pm although the member of staff who was there was helpful to a point.

Review 112:Location and the choice of rooms to relax in, it was lovely and quiet, staff were friendly, it was close to everything but secluded at the same time. Our request for a room where mum didn't have to walk to far was delivered. Love the fire and being near the river. Felt we had the house almost to ourselves. Breakfast was lovely, and the two young girls who were looking after service morning and evening ,were excellent.

Review 113:Staff weren't always that welcoming.

Review 114:The fireplace at reception was fabulous.Impressive change to a chain.Special

Review 115:Excellent Service Open Fires Comfortable Lounges Comfortable bed Great Food

Review 116:Nite Staff need to smile...clue foreigners from miserable cuntries dont smile. Not there fault its employers.

Review 117:The hotel is cute medievil gorgous

Review 118:Pity about the weather.

Review 119:The location, food, comfort, style, service.

Review 120:Food was a bit expensive, i felt they were trying too hard.

Review 121:Location cleanliness and comfort, fantastic lounge and dining area.

Review 122:Restaurant very expensive.

Review 123:Lovely location, good size, comfortable rooms. Cozy lounge and bar area.

Review 124:Everything Perfect

Review 125:Room was a bit tired , plug points were not close to mirrors in order to use hairdryer,

Review 126:Wonderful food, great roaring fires,

Review 127:Magnificent old building full,of charm and character. Staff every accommodating and the food was second to none.

Review 128:Slow, poor service in dining room for dinner.

Review 129:Lovely country house hotel, cosy and comfortable.

Review 130:Food over-priced, pretentious evening meal service.

Review 131:Very comfortable room. Nice fires in public rooms. Historic atmosphere.

Review 132:The staff were a bit pompous.

Review 133:Restaurant menu not very suitable for children.
