Reviews for The Belmont Hotel
Review 1:The price was steep when a special offer was offered at half the price including dinner just a day or two after I had booked.
Review 2:View was so quintessential English with a cricket matches both Saturday and Sunday in view from the widow and the beautiful coast line.
Review 3:Hotel is mostly for senior people. Felt like we "don't belong" there.
Review 4:Very nice looking hotel. Great location. Excellent rooms and bathrooms. Very good atmosphere.
Review 5:The lift was right by our room and the noise it made was dreadful. Even when we moved rooms it could still be heard. Think they need to upgrade this. Also in case of fire, quick evacuation could be difficult with so many stairs to get down and so many frail, elderly people.
Review 6:The staff were very helpful and pleasant and the surroundings were attractive.
Review 7:I had to contact the hotel in order to get the B/B rate; Also , the free bottle of wine for repeat guests is only available when booking the hotel directly.
Review 8:Personal service at breakfast is unique nowadays. Gorgeous gardens. Staff welcoming and friendly.
Review 9:Lack of clarity on meal pricing.
Review 10:We very much enjoyed taking a drink on the terrace, the gardens were beautifully manicured and the baskets spectacular. The view was perfect - apart from the two coaches that parked at the bottom of the drive in front of the entrance. The food was good but not outstanding. Very clean.
Review 11:Breakfast was a little stuffy. A buffet for cold items would have been better but the hotel does appear to cater for an elderly clientele who may not appreciate or be able to take advantage of a buffet.
Review 12:Great location on the sea front. Easy walk into town centre. Staff very friendly and attentive. Bedroom very well equipped and comfortable.
Review 13:We needed a break and the Belmont was a very pleasant place to stay in, we felt refreshed after a few days. Excellent accommodation, surroundings and the staff were helpful and friendly. well done.
Review 14:Would not have booked if I had known that facilities were in a separate hotel. Decor and fittings very dated. On balance did not feel it offered good value for money.
Review 15:Staff were very attentive and hotel was clean and well maintained. Food was good.
Review 16:Nothing really.
Review 17:Old world charm and courtesy are not dead yet at The Belmont Hotel. Staff and fellow guests are friendly, helpful and present themselves respectably attired at meal times.Rooms are spacious and comfortable.Perhaps we are all part of a bygone age.
Review 18:Nothing. But the hotels guests are mainly older people and this is not a hotel for noisy children.
Review 19:This hotel has impeccable standards, dining, breakfast, staff and public rooms and bedrooms all first class.
Review 20:Quality of evening meal was disappointing and not up to a five star standard. We felt that desserts should have been made in house and not bought in.
Review 21:Very attentive staff.
Review 22:The age average on the hotel is over 65, however for who expects a quiet and relaxing trip this is not actually bad.
Review 23:The room was amazing, with a sea view that would simply take your breath away. Staff went out of their way to make us comfortable and were all very nice.
Review 24:Tired decor in a lot of the public rooms and some bedrooms old fashioned, dated and damaged old furniture that needs replacing. We had to move rooms because of this, its not a cheap hotel to stay in and we had to pay more for the room we moved too. However it ended up on the sea front with balcony so wasn't all bad .But over £1000 for 5 nights is significant for Devon and they shouldn't be complacent. The non uplifted rooms should be cheaper to reflect the standard.
Review 25:Fantastic location on the sea-front, old fashioned charm however this needs to move with the times and be updated. The service and food are Impeccable Totally awesome served on lovely white linen tablecloths, however the china is old chunky and tired like much of the decor in the public rooms. Some of the bedrooms have been updated so make sure you ask to have one of these as the others are an unacceptable standard for the price- very old tired and dated.
Review 26:However if, like us , one is on a room only basis the staff have a problem "thinking out of the box" Especially in the dining room! They were not prepared with seating , despite booking nor were they able to work out how to allow us choices from either/ both of the menus. Despite fish appearing on both menus they were unble to serve it despite our early sitting - come on in Siidmouth?!
Review 27:Agree with all said about position, style, and ambience. Plus the benefit of the Folk Festival as free entertainment which, unaware of its existence, we also enjoyed.
Review 28:The bedroom was very hot at night: too much for the fan provided, though the weather was hot and therefore little which could be done. The staff lacked the polish which we enjoyed at the Royal Duchy about a month before.
Review 29:The hotel was well located to explore Sidmouth on foot. We booked at short notice but there was no penalty if we cancelled up to the day before our arrival. The facilities were good
Review 30:Room a bit cramped. Plug for kettle the other side of room. No toothpaste with the toiletries. Do think breakfast could be included in the price of the room.
Review 31:Location. Nice firm bed. Nice and clean. Most toiletries provided. Tea/ coffe in room.
Review 32:Breakfast was very expensive if you are booked on a 'room only' basis, similar to London prices which we thought was a little excessive with no option for only a Continental Breakfast.
Review 33:We thought The Belmont was a lovely hotel. It was not cheap but we had a beautiful room which on the side of the hotel was very quiet and we could still see the sea. The location on The Esplanade was perfect. We would definitely stay at The Belmont when we next visit Sidmouth.
Review 34:This hotel is definitely aimed at the more mature customer. It has the ambience of retired gentility. Not very keen on the system of having the same table at breakfast that you had at dinner the night before. If you hadn't been there for dinner you were treated with surprise at breakfast. Also there was the saving of parking spaces in the car park through the use of cones. Rather amusing to watch but perhaps should be discouraged.
Review 35:The location is perfect for enjoying Sidmouth. Very easy to walk along the front and enjoy the beaches, shops, restaurants. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Review 36:The food was good but not as good as in the past, and quite expensive.
Review 37:Nice staff. Very well maintained building; clearly plenty of money is spent to keep the building looking really good. Position.
Review 38:Room not great for cost, never once did anyone apologise when errors were made (and there were quite a lot) which is poor. Staff robotic, no empathy.
Review 39:Location wonderful, garden, parking, all lovely on a sunny day
Review 40:Service in the lounge and on the patio was not as fast as it should have been.
Review 41:Service in the dining room was excellent particularly Sunday lunch when our party of 12 included four children who where well looked after
Review 42:Good location. Plenty parking available. Comfortable hotel. Good food
Review 43:overall attention to detail, good food, comfortable rooms, friendly staff.
Review 44:there was no table in the restaurant allocated to our room. Very expensive breakfast. Food service, evening in bar, was extremely slow.
Review 45:The location, the helpful and pleasant staff.well equipped and comfortable room.
Review 46:Pillows! not very comfortable to sleep on Wifi kept failing
Review 47:nice location, lounge and clean well appointed room.
Review 48:Old fashioned comfort and style
Review 49:no problems
Review 50:position of hotel. size of room. helpful staff good car parking
Review 51:Great sea view rooms. Good food. Polite staff.
Review 52:Politeness and helpfulness of desk staff
Review 53:Pity the swimming pool is located elsewhere.
Review 54:Difficult to pinpoint a particular aspect. All very enjoyable.
Review 55:Cost of meals
Review 56:Spaciousness and facilities
Review 57:Beds uncomfortable. Room standard, deluxe paid for. Dinner very poor but hotel agreed to recompense us.
Review 58:Easy access to town and parking.
Review 59:first class sevice all round
Review 60:Collar and tie for gents in the restaurant in the evening. Not necessary.
Review 61:The fact that it was close to the town and the sea.
Review 62:Very little
Review 63:Almost everything
Review 64:Everything, including being served breakfast! Friendliness, comfort , garden, public rooms, food, all faultless.
Review 65:No breakfast before 8AM, inflexible/unhelpful management, jacket/tie requirement for dinner, no safe in room.
Review 66:Building/setting
Review 67:Dusty cabinets and lumpy bed, expensive meal choices.
Review 68:I can.'t think of anything that was sub-standard
Review 69:The room was pleasant and the view was superb. The room was always serviced early in the day. The menu was varied and the food was a very high standard. The floral decorations were very artistic.
Review 70:Facilities (pool, table tennis, Fussball, etc.) were in fact not part of the Belmont, but of the neighboring Victoria hotel. They were situated in a shed behind the hotel which stank! We decided to play one game of pool (for 50p), since the receptionist had been kind enough to open the place up for us, and then left. What a letdown.
Review 71:Location was perfect. The receptionist was kind enough to let us keep our car in the car park for a couple of hours after check out.
Review 72:Dinner was a bit pricey... But never mind Food was delicious
Review 73:Classy and classic place. Loved the idea of jacket for dinner - which I borrowed from the hotel with no problem.
Review 74:We had to change rooms as it was like a fridge which with the weather was not great, but they moved us to better room but the bed was awful as it was two beds zipped together as a double came apart all through the night so not very restfull.
Review 75:The staff and food were excellent, could not fault it.
Review 76:The only thing this time I felt that I had maybe paid over the odds for the room.I thought that I had room bed breakfast and evening meal, but in fact the price was room only!
Review 77:We have stayed here many times and the staff are always helpful and polite and have been there for years. The ambience of the hotel is cosy friendly, yet luxurious.
Review 78:The room had been recently redecorated nicely, but the ensuite was shabby. The room also had a broken television. We asked them to look at it whilst we went out for dinner, however when we returned later on, no-one had been up. When someone did come up, it transpired the hotel were already aware it was broken and needed changing. Why then use that room when most of the other rooms were empty? We were given another room however it did not have the sea-view we paid extra for and we also had the rain coming through around the window frame, soaking the walls. The room itself was very nice though with a clean modern ensuite. Attention to detail was poor. Some of the complimentary toiletries were missing in the room. Flowers? Where? It would have also been appreciated if staff knocked before coming into the room.
Review 79:The spa at the neighbouring hotel was very nice. Good location and the breakfast was very good.
Review 80:brochure stated there was a swimming pool but this was situated at the nieghbouring hotel. No trouser press in the room.
Review 81:Staff were polite, efficient and very helpful, our room was brilliant and the bathroom one of the best and the bed was extremely comfortable. Food in the residents lounge was excellent as was the location.
Review 82:I was one of the many elderly. I would not recommend it to anyone under 50.
Review 83:I came for a break-away from a stressful life. It was perfect for comfort, always interesting view from the warmth of the big lounges, and the easy access to the enchanting Town. And the numerous staff were so very discreet with their cheerful friendliness.
Review 84:Inflexibility at dinner. My wife has been ill and eats small portions. Six courses is not an option for her. We were not allowed to eat in the dining room on an a la carte basis. It was set menu or nothing. We were offered a table in the bar which was isolated and cold. We were dressed properly, ties, jackets etc but denied the atmosphere of evening dining. The quality of the food is not an issue.
Review 85:Position. Sense of style. Spacious. Comfortable.
Review 86:Pillows - hard foam and no feather ones offered. No extra blankets in wardrobe. Old fashioned 80s style decor - though obviously new carpets and curtains. Too many glittery chandeliers and gilt for my taste!
Review 87:Lovely hotel - very well staffed. Good for older clientele. Fantastic position - seaview with balcony rooms very nice. Good bar snacks and breakfast.
Review 88:I did not like paying £50.00 more for the second night and if I had realised it I would not have gone. I tackled the hotel but they said there was nothing they can do as it was booking.com
Review 89:most of it
Review 90:The reception staff were not friendly at all. Not really organised for business, much better as a holiday hotel
Review 91:The dining room staff were really good, friendly and helpful
Review 92:Evening entertainment wouldn't get x3 'yesses' from an under aged 60 audience, but fair enough for the venue and location. Nothing to dislike. Outside the hotel, Sidmouth 'closes' at 9.00 p.m. Quite quaint but frustrating of you want a meal. We drove to Exmouth for the 'bright lights!' :-)
Review 93:Staff superb Position exquisite Facilities OK, many are 'next door', but it's all very close and easy. The staff though, without exception were superb, no other word for them.
Review 94:Having to go over to The Victoria to swim was a slight negative.
Review 95:Very comfortable and well-serviced rooms. Excellent breakfasts. Proximity to the sea
Review 96:The breakfast was expensive for what it was!!! The portions were very small and the cooked breakfast, especially the fried egg was stone cold.
Review 97:The Position and facilities
Review 98:The hotel seemed to cater for the 70+ generation but many of the customers were well under that age do maybe modernising the bar entertainment may be an idea.
Review 99:Service at breakfast was well worth the stay. There was no queueing for cold buffet style food.
Review 100:We felt the price for a night was very steep. The hotel is very clean and comfortable but the decor is geared towards retired guests and at 52 and 55 my husband and I were the youngest guests there! Having said that it would only be the price that would put us off going again.
Review 101:We had booked another hotel for the night, a 2 star country hotel with very good reviews and in a peaceful location to find while in Devon on the day of our stay the original hotel had double-booked so booking.com found us The 4 star Belmont as a replacement. The Belmont was on the seafront and we had a sea view which was great. Luckily sidmouth is a quiet seaside town so it didn't spoil our trip. The Belmont is spotless and the staff are excellent, can not do enough to be of service.
Review 102:Got burned on arm by towel rail in bathroom as it was near the door. There was a danger warning for the hot rail but temperature could easily be turned down by installing a current adjuster control in the room.
Review 103:Excellent service from friendly staff.
Review 104:Having to wear ties after 6.45 p.m. Evening Meal very expensive for what it was
Review 105:The beautiful linen both bed and table service was excellent hot plates at breakfast
Review 106:This place (whilst pricey) is amazing! My daughter, mother-in-law and myself absolutely love this place. The staff are lovely and helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the food is out of this world and the hotel is in the BEST location (right on the promenade, less than half a mile from the shops)
Review 107:This is a problem with most hotels - television noise from neighbouring rooms. I could hear about three televisions, one very loud on the wall the other side of my bedhead! One morning the radio was switched on at 5.30 to 6.00 am and all TVs were loud early evening and around 8.00 am or so. It would help if hotels could warn guests that neighbouring rooms can hear TV noise and ask them not to turn up the volume as if they were in their own homes. There is a useful subtitle option for those who are hard of hearing. Frankly if I had wanted peace and quiet, I would not have found it in my room. Is there any way that volume controls can be limited so they cannot be turned up. I was in Room 304 and could hear TV noise above quite a bit, were these guests or staff? This is the only aspect that would make me hesitate in booking again at the Belmont in view of the high prices.
Review 108:A feeling of gracious living! Welcoming for the solo traveller and very helpful to have the option of being able to have a lighter and less expensive meal in the lounge area.
Review 109:The little waitress who served our toast on day 1 and2 said "that'salright!" When I thanked her as she put iit down! A bit worried to hearon arrival that guests had been unwell and a room might need fogging. This a very public phone conversation overheard in reception whilebooking in. I think the receptionist was talking to a potential guest. It was not the first thing I wanted to hear on arrival and did make metwitchy during our stay. Too much information!!!
Review 110:Comfort and convenience. We normally do b nB but booked late for golffestival week so had limited options. Excellent slick room switch.
Review 111:I think the restaurant food let the hotel down. It was expensive and inmy opinion, poor value for money and the guinea fowl meal I had, I couldhave easily cooked myself at home. It was much too simple. The Pimms hadno fruit and when I queried why such a posh restaurant served such apoor Pimms, I was told that I should have known to ask for the moreexpensive Pimms Cocktail. However, there was no Drinks Menu, only one forwine. How would I know that then? They were unlucky because the daybefore I had eaten in a pub and been given fantastic food, presented ina top chef style at a third of the price of the Belmont guinea fowl. ThePimms was full of lovely fruit and I didn't specifically ask them for aPimms Cocktail. So I would say myself, I think the chef might think toproduce food of a higher standard as British food has improved inquality of late. The smart waiting staff and piano playing weren'tenough for me to compensate for the mediocre cooking and I ate elsewherethe other days.
Review 112:I liked the bathroom, the view from the bedroom and the location. Also I appreciated the hot chocolate sachet and the little chocolateat bedtime.
Review 113:We would have appreciated tea-making facilities
Review 114:This is a relaxed, friendly place to stay. it was our second visit and we would happily return. The facilities are good, service excellent and the interior and exterior surroundings are very pleasant. Our room was clean and comfortable with great sea views. The terrace looked an inviting place to try a G&T but the weather put a stop to all thoughts of that...
Review 115:Restaurant staff, particularly the restaurant manager, and to a lesser extent the bar staff, were atrocious. Booked breakfast on arrival but then told on arriving at restaurant that they were full despite available tables and many not cleared. No customer service at all, we were an inconvenience and treated accoridngly
Review 116:Room was excellent, very comfortable and clean Reception staff were friendly and welcoming, could not fault them
Review 117:The staff were super friendly and helpful and nothing was too muchtrouble for them. The whole hotel had a nice gentle feel about it and itwas very easy to relax. Our room was spotlessly clean with fresh towelseveryday, the bed was very comfortable and we liked the two easy chairs. The turn-down service, the closing of the curtains in the evening alongwith the complimentary chocolate was a nice touch. The breakfast menuand food quality was very good and the attitude of the staff wasfaultless. We did not take lunch or dinner so are unable to comment onthem but the menu did seem very good although a six course dinner mighthave been a bi t of a struggle. The location of the Belmont wasexcellent, about 5 minutes easy level walk from the town and jast acrossthe road from the beach.
Review 118:Only the price would put me off visiting again.
Review 119:Wonderful friendly staff, rooms very comfortable and extremely clean with fresh fruit and flowers waiting for us.Food was excellent with a wide range to choose from.Would recommend to friends and family though prices for bed and breakfast are rather high.
Review 120:wi-fi was extra and not exactly cheap, however the manager did say they were planning to make it complimentary in the future and gave me 24 hours free use. Although we are 60 now we felt very young as most of the other guests appear in their 70's and 80's, so not a hotel for the young or those with families. I think as this older generation fizzle out they may have to re-think their 'jacket and ties' only at dinner as many of the younger people prefer smart casual, as did we hence the bar every night.
Review 121:Ideally located for Sidmouth town and perfect for the beach. Very pretty gardens. Hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff, on the whole, very pleasant. Food was excellent and a good choice. We ate in the bar every night and enjoyed every meal.
Review 122:The hotel has a slightly formal atmosphere which, we now realise, is one of the features that makes it popular with an older age group.
Review 123:Excellent location on the seafront, close to the town of Sidmouth. Our sea-facing room was very comfortable and any initial problems were quickly resolved by the manager.
Review 124:Plain rudeness from a barman when ordering drinks. Also when I returned from breakfast at 9.30 (checkout is 11.00a.m.) I found my room had already been stripped of linen and towels. As my belongings were still lying about waiting for final packing, I find this not only objectionable but also a security risk. Over-priced dinner.
Review 125:Excellent position - clean - good reception - nice facilities in bedroom and elsewhere in hotel - easy parking.
Review 126:the short bed (i am tall) the thin walls.
Review 127:its location initially. the aura in the hotel. the quietness and formality. the service. the food quality. the cleanliness. the space of public rooms. the polite staff.
Review 128:No hairdryer in room. Evening bar menu not very exciting selection offood. Parking a little restricted room, small, and not to warm
Review 129:To have breakfast served rather than a buffet service. Nice selection ofmagazines to browse. Quality of towels in room clean bright decor.
Review 130:Old fashioned. Tired Poor dinning room
Review 131:Not much!
Review 132:Leaving
Review 133:The whole experience was one of quality. The food was excellent, the service attentive, friendly but unobtrusive and the accommodation superb.
Review 134:old fashioned good servicenothing
Review 135:The fact there was no airconditioning
Review 136:The staff
The Fine Print
From time to time a room move may be required to accomodate you during your stay. On making your reservation should this be the case we will notify you immediately. The hotel requests that gentlemen wear a jacket and tie in the lounges and dining room during evening dinner.
