Reviews for The Victoria Hotel

Review 1:bathroom did not have separate bath and shower units as stated on website basin plug hole had missing 'grill', anything could fall into it bed was soft and felt like a 'water bed' wet towels which were left on the floor for changing were just picked up and put back on the towel rail bathroom felt cool

Review 2:large room with good lighting and sea view room and hotel recently refurbished excellent water pressure in shower/bath

Review 3:We were looked after by very helpful staff with an almost old fashioned sense of service. The bedroom was very comfortable with all amenities. The requested special diet was dealt with efficiently and professionally

Review 4:Everything from the view of the bay to the excellent restaurants with fabulous cuisine.

Review 5:Brilliant. We are planning our next visit. Excellent facility and all the staff without exception attentive, helpful and courteous.

Review 6:I didn't like the cleaning staff sorting out all there linen on the room landing floor a little unprofessional for the hotel.

Review 7:Views where excellent. Room was stunning and spotless. We will come back

Review 8:Lovely room and facilities; superb dinner. Nice to still find what some would call "old-fashioned" standards, but what are in reality the quality to aspire to in these days of declining standards.

Review 9:Nothing

Review 10:The calm, courteous ambience of the hotel. Excellent food and service, befitting the location. Lovely views of the sea and gardens only 5 minutes easy walk to the seafront and shops.

Review 11:The Victoria Hotel has a wonderfully relaxing feel to it. The staff are always smiling and helpful. A real treat to spend even one night there as you come away feeling as if you have had a longer stay.

Review 12:Personally found the bed too soft, but that is down to personal opinion and didn't take away any of the enjoyment of our break.

Review 13:Location excellent, staff excellent, facilities excellent. Only a short break but left feeling fully refreshed.

Review 14:We are very very concerned that there is not air conditioning in the room In the summer this room must be unbearable and it should be rectified immediately.

Review 15:The large bedroom with plenty of lights to read by. Also two comfortable arm chairs in the window. And the excellent aids to getting out of the bath

Review 16:food was only moderate, slightly disappointing in the context of the overall hotel quality

Review 17:bed v comfy. room lovely and generally very well appointed decor etc

Review 18:Only the shortness of our stay.

Review 19:Although the staff were obviously very busy, they always had a moment to chat and help when needed. The whole place exuded an air of comfort and calm. Position of hotel was just right. We loved it.

Review 20:The location was amazing and there was plenty to do at the hotel if we chose to spend our whole stay there. On the doorstep there were beautiful walks with stunning views & the town centre was close by with interesting shops and cafes. All of the staff were welcoming and friendly, they are the best part of the hotel.

Review 21:The bedroom and bathroom The size of the bedroom and bathroom was small but ok for a 2 night stay. the main course for the dinner was good but the intermediate courses were not value for money.

Review 22:Was very noisy on Sat evening until 11.15pm with the band playing downstairs but this was the only night of disturbance.

Review 23:The room with sea view and balcony was amazing and well worth the extra paid.

Review 24:Being phoned after arriving home to be told that the bill that I paidwas missing nearly £ 100! having informed them when I was leaving andwanted to settle a/c

Review 25:Ambience

Review 26:The sauna and jacuzzi

Review 27:Evening meal superb. Room spotless with lots of freebies including a large bowl delicious fruit. Room 310 was very quiet with a view. Definitely go again.

Review 28:The weekend we were there, the wi-fi reception was absolutely dreadful. It was much better on the Monday, though, and I was told such problems were rare.

Review 29:Public rooms all comfortable with lovely sea views from the lounge.

Review 30:Couldn't find anything to dislike or criticise

Review 31:The whole experience: the staff were attentive and discreet. The food was of a very high quality and excellently presented. A very good hotel indeed.

Review 32:My daughter and I were delighted with the superb standard of this beautiful hotel, Our room was luxurious, our evening bar meal excellent value and our breakfast delicious. Cannot wait to go back for hopefully a longer stay.

Review 33:From the minute you walk through the door you know the standard are high, the staff and service spot on. The hotel may be a bit formal but the atmosphere is relaxing, the elegant restaurant serves very good food and wine, the dinner menu is good value for money, but the drinks are a tad expensive. The sea view bedrooms are luxurious, the bathroom one of the best lite I've used, worth the paying for the upgrade. All in all this is a wonderful hotel to spend that special weekend, there is nothing to dislike, don't forget the jacket & tie for dinner and leave the mobile in your room.

Review 34:Can not think of anything!

Review 35:Everything about this hotel was superb from the staff the bedrooms, dining room and plenty of lounging areas. Food top quality and plenty of parking for cars. Our only complaint was we were only staying 3 nights! Will certainly visit again.

Review 36:Two years ago we stayed at the Belmont and had a scaffolding outside our bedroom window, this year our first night was in an excellent bedroom (rm.115) but we were moved after the first night to room 110, the bed was too small for a double and the decor was tired and in need of updating, so second disappointment at Brend Hotels.

Review 37:We thought that the recreation and communal areas were very good, that the staff were excellent and nothing too much trouble for them. The restaurant and service and quality of food was first class.

Review 38:When I complained about the single mattress in my room I was shown another room and moved to a double with a much more supportive mattress. The staff were very obliging.

Review 39:Wines were pricey - maybe over priced.

Review 40:Great bedrooms with sea views. The lounge rooms were beautiful, with one with views overlooking Sidmouth. The dining room was very stylish. Each evening there was either a pianist or a band playing. Fantastic food - menus changed daily.

Review 41:Car parking a nightmare. We had to park in the only available space by the kitchens and were blocked in by delivery lorries on departure

Review 42:Food very good and room clean and comfy

Review 43:The towel rail not being on in the bathroom. The feeling at breakfast as it approached 10 am that it was time to go although we had not finished. The leisure and poolside not having a member of staff subtly in attendance. Bar meals ( we were on a limited budget) had the same veg 2 evenings running.

Review 44:The gentle atmosphere throughout the hotel. The facilities together with a comfortable room with plenty of tea, coffee etc. plus bathing products. Mostly the staff were exceptional. The food was very good.

Review 45:I thought the rate was quite expensive. Yes you have to pay for quality but the rate was high even for a quality hotel. The dining room was a bit pointless for us. The DJ requirement is a bit over the top for a seaside hotel. We knew about this in advance. It seemed to cater more for the older generation locals more than younger residents. We ate out every night because the hotel didn't meet our evening meal needs.

Review 46:I liked the good service and good quality of the hotel. We especially liked the outdoor swimming pool area which was quiet. We basically had the pool to ourselves. Our room was well maintained and we had a nice view of the sea.

Review 47:Due to the number of social events at the hotel, obtaining a car park was difficult at times. We didn't find the hotel staff to be particularly friendly or welcoming.

Review 48:We had a wonderful balcony off our room with a great view along the beach to the cliffs. The hotel's proximity to the town and beach is excellent and the grounds and gardens are beautifully maintained. The hotel provided car parking on site. The room overall was spacious and we appreciated the included breakfast and bottled water.

Review 49:Parking was always difficult and we had to drive around to find a spot and be very patient.

Review 50:Food excellent, extremely tasty and compliments to the chef. Very good dining room with good table position. Excellent service and very enjoyable live music particularly the pianist. Excellent delux sea view room. Will definitely return.

Review 51:Gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket and tie for dinner. I can see that certain standards have to be met but this does seem a little old-fashioned. My mother who was travelling with us had a single room and this was rather small although our double room was excellent.

Review 52:The hotel is well located close to the seafront but away from any likelihood of noise. We were given a very good welcome and service continued helpful and friendly throughout. This was in contrast to some smart hotels that we have visited where the atmosphere can be a little pretentious. The food was of excellent quality. The bar served a reasonable range of cocktails with a superb range of complimentary nibbles.

Review 53:The staff were friendly and helpful. Room was a bit dated but clean and functional. A little bit stuffy for my liking but the age of most customers was in the 60+ age group so style probably reflective if their core audience. Lovely pool area and a short walk to the beach and shops. Good bar service and bar food a nice alternative to the a la carte restaurant.

Review 54:Easily the most expensive hotel on our holiday, even though others had similar levels of luxury etc. A few minor mistakes with room service and the bill, though they were quickly & courteously corrected. An iron in the room would be nice (although they have an ironing service).

Review 55:Excellent staff - attentive & courteous. Rooms were clean, comfortable & luxurious, with sweeping views. Great location near seafront. Good facilities - pool, spa, etc. Good restaurant (N.B. very formal).

Review 56:1. 1/4 steaks was tough 2. disappointment about the lack of head massage and food reflexology due to staff unavailability/holidays 3. In Room 312 TV hard to control- channel changing difficult and 4. kettle unreliable

Review 57:friendly and helpful staff and elegant environment, Excellent location and views. Generally excellent food and wine, including breakfast.

Review 58:For us it was luxurious. I had an early walk to the beach and dip in the sea, then returned to the garden, and swam in the much warmer hotel pool, finishing off with a gorgeous shower available, with towels, in the changing room. Beautiful service and food in the very well positioned restaurant

Review 59:Reception service was inconsistent and concierge was nonexistent. Minor point but the alternative offer to the full English breakfast (buffet) was disappointing by today's standards.

Review 60:Excellent staff on the whole, particularly in restaurant and bar. Traditional family ambiance and service. Beautiful location and setting. Luxurious rooms, especially those with sea view.

Review 61:The band on saturday evening was loud and kind of pub singer knees-up dance stuff. Great to see live music but maybe experiment with a few other options..?

Review 62:Retained its original features and style Classy establishment Staff very helpful and professional Excellent facilities - pools, tennis etc

Review 63:every aspect of the hotel and staff were concentrated with giving the customer a perfect experience of comfort and excellence,a rare quality most other hotels fail to deliver.

Review 64:Eating less formally in the lounge area. Physically uncomfortable due to height of tables/chairs etc and uncomfortable when others emerged from dining room to use the lounge for coffee etc Mattress uncomfortable? Victoria dining room menu usually not available to view until late into afternoon

Review 65:Friendly Attentive efficient staff Excellent food and comfort Excellent location with good facilities Outdoor pool excellent Room with sea view

Review 66:Found Sidmouth itself shabby and disappointing.

Review 67:Loved location, breakfast was superb and cleanliness was outstanding. Staff were very friendly and polite. Really quiet both in and outside hotel. Perfect!

Review 68:An old yellow hose wrapped around a tap next to the Jacuzzi, it just looked a mess. Dress code for the restaurant - jacket and tie every night? I'm all for some formality and tradition but maybe a little OTT.

Review 69:Staff were very attentive. Lovely quiet room. Great view of the sea.

Review 70:The Pool changing facilities. Always wet. Had to pass through the hotel with wet hair as no hairdryer was available. On arrival we were sorry to find that there was no facility for making a night time drink in the room.. as an insomniac would have found this very desirable. Even more sad, when departing, to find the tea-making kit, secreted in the bed-side cabinet! Ah Well! Plates sometimes scalding hot and the cutlery has seen better days.

Review 71:The Pool Very Helpful Staff Very good breakfast especially the cooked breakfast..good quality ingredients. Good fruit options. Catered very well for dietary needs...Thank you very much. Hotel was quiet at night.

Review 72:Old fashioned, dated, chintzy interior Over formal - Jacket and Tie required for restaurant! Overpriced. Breakfast is £23.00!!!! Nowhere near enough parking!

Review 73:Swimming pools looked nice but I didn't get the chance to try them out. Clean

Review 74:Small point. If you had a standard room it did not include a dressing gown. You had to request one from reception and was willingly given one. Why not include one with the room ?

Review 75:Just about everything was realy good.

Review 76:Shower over bath and not a walk in one.

Review 77:Nice room, with a sea view, partially. Not booked as room with sea view so no problem with this. Well equipped. Free Wifi! Helpful staff. Nice food. Outside heated pool .

Review 78:Random failure of the plumbing (but fixed more or less). Furnishings in our room somewhat worn. Would have liked a better selection of fresh fruit at breakfast, and really -only half a tomato if you want tomatoes with your full English! At £23 for breakfast!

Review 79:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff, prompt attention to problems. Lovely view, comfortable bed with lots of extras. like fruit and chocs in the room - but we were paying a lot of money (deluxe seaview room)

Review 80:Some of the rooms are a little cramped, but given when the hotel was built, this was understandable.

Review 81:The Victoria is an excellent hotel. We have stayed at The Belmont next door before so we knew what to expect, in terms of facilities & service

Review 82:Just one minor gripe. In a hotel of this standard, I would expect fresh ground coffee in the rooms, instead of the nasty instant stuff.

Review 83:Very comfortable hotel. Excellent staff, lovely views.

Review 84:Main restaurant too stuffy and back in the 1940,s attitude wise. Tieshave to be worn to dinner.no matter if its a holiday hotel in summer!!!!I WORE EXPENSIVE FORMAL SHOES AND JACKET BUT STILL FORCED TO WEAR A TIE!! ATMOSPHERE IN RESTAURANT SUFFERED LIKEWISE DUE TO THIS STUFFY APPROACH EVEN THOUGH A GROUP PLAYED SOFT EASY LISTENING MUSIC (AGAIN A BIT 1940,S PALM COURT). GROUP DID SAY THEY WOULD "LIVEN THINGS UP IN THE LOUNGE THOUGH (GOOD FOR THEM) ROOM TOO SMALL FOR THE PRICE AND FRONT WALLS HAD PEELING PAINT/DAMP ALL TO BE HAD FOR £280 NIGHT!! WHEN I INFORMED RECEPTION OF THIS ON LEAVING I HAD A REPLY THAT WAS A BIT HIGH HANDED. I WAS TOLD "WELL ITS AN OLD HOTEL"!! I LIKE THIS PARTICULAR HOTEL GROUP AND THE CARLYON BAY AND DUCHY HOTELS ARE EXCELLENT. MAYBE ITS JUST THE MANAGEMENT IN THIS HOTEL WHO NEED "WAKENING UP"!!

Review 85:Excellent well trained restaurant and front house staff. Lovely positionand close to beach and town and woodland walks

Review 86:parking was a little difficult on arrival - although it was far better than most hotels in Sidmouth. suggest staff park elsewhere. the lift was a little small and a squeeze for a wheelchair.

Review 87:Food, cleanliness, Spa and pool - we did have super weather. The young front of house assistant George was most helpful and friendly on our arrival.

Review 88:The balcony. There was a hole in the wall where there had been a fan by the bathroom wall and the pigeons were nesting there, so there was a lot of pigeon dirt on the floor of the balcony.

Review 89:Everything, the staff were so pleasant and kind, the food unbelieveable and the views were beautiful.

Review 90:The dress code in the restaurant for dinner. Also a supervisor/manager reprimanded another member in front of us which I thought was unprofessional.

Review 91:Excellent location with very friendly staff. The spa and pool are great and we had an amazing sea view

Review 92:: no criticism: all excellent;

Review 93:A very warm welcome on arrival and reception area was inviting Room was lovely with the added touches of a fruit selection and chocs: a bonus: all very clean: When meeting members of staff were greeted with a smile and a pleasantry:

Review 94:We stay every December and it's always enjoyable nice food and friendly staff.

Review 95:Pool didn't opens til 8am so I never used it

Review 96:Room,sea view, staff & public areas.

Review 97:Slightly formal,

Review 98:Comfortable, friendly staff, putting green, location close to Connaught Gardens

Review 99:Did not react as expected to problem we had with one Dinner

Review 100:Pleasent relaxed atmosphere. All guests remarkably friendly

Review 101:Staff, without exception, were polite, friendly and helpful.

Review 102:Old fashion service

Review 103:Breakfast very expensive for just buffet

Review 104:Well appointed spacious hotel with good views

Review 105:We felt we were special guests and, in our view, thoroughly looked after.

Review 106:it was a quick overnighter and perfectly adequate

Review 107:food

Review 108:Everything.

Review 109:All the traditional things, but with a good modern twist - just enough!

Review 110:Very nice and comfortable room with sea view. Room was upgraded Lovely bathroom and comfortable bed

Review 111:the building is old and needs some maintenance

Review 112:location and services are really good

Review 113:The ambience

Review 114:The WFii did cut a lot of the time and was very slow.

Review 115:The staff are very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very relaxing.

Review 116:Friendly care of Staff, always ready to help

Review 117:The pillows on my bed. Breakfasts serving until 10am only.

Review 118:Our sea-view room. Turning our beds down at night. Helpful, curteous staff. All lovely.

Review 119:malfunctioning key cards

Review 120:Swimming pools Parking anonymity situation

Review 121:The service was excellent and very relaxed. The whole experience was very charming and had an old fashioned elegance about it.

Review 122:Everything and especially the politeness of head doorman
