Reviews for Sidmouth Harbour Hotel - The Westcliff

Review 1:Shower head was fixed, which makes washing of lower parts difficult.

Review 2:We had a good offer on a twin room. The beds were comfortable. the room was quite large. We were fortunate in having a balcony, which was not in the original offer. Breakfast was good and served until 10.00

Review 3:Everything you could wish for in a hotel and more. Undergoing improvements but not affecting guests. Will be great when complete. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 4:The shower is new ,but has a design problem, as water runs along the shelf straight onto the floor.Have someone "snag"the rooms before the builders leave .

Review 5:The Staff were friendly ,welcoming ,attentive ,and extremely polite. The court yard rooms are perfect for traveling with a dog as you have your own front door. They are clean amazingly comfortable beds .The breakfasts great choice, taste and presentation. The evening meal better than some five star restaurants I have eaten in.

Review 6:Breakfast service extremely slow. staff of only 2 were waiting on a full dining room, until just before 10.00am when help arrived. At the same time buffet items were removed, unhelpful when we were still waiting for our breakfast to arrive. It took 45minutes and was disappointing when we were finally served.

Review 7:Good size room. Clean and well presented.

Review 8:Breakfast, the building-in-progress and the fact that there was no comfortable bar facility to enjoy in the afternoons.

Review 9:The room was clean and the staff were very friendly.

Review 10:Did not like the sprouts with the hake dinner

Review 11:The upgrade room in the Courtyard, very smart clean but designed by a man(no make up mirror).Bath needs handles to get out of!

Review 12:The room was small. There was no room to sit and relax, that could have been because of the building works.

Review 13:The room was very clean, the breakfast was lovely, good parking.

Review 14:Nothing - everything was perfect.

Review 15:The rooms are very comfortable, fabulous beds and lovely White Company tioletries. It was December and the hotel was decorated for Christmas very tastefully, with lovely Christmas music playing discreetly in the background. It was very festive.

Review 16:There is a need to have a large bar area as the bar was in restaurant and we had to sit in the comfortable area in the foyer.

Review 17:Great views. Local to the town so way to shop.

Review 18:I thought the bed was too soft. The wifi needs some work ! Only available in the reception and nothing at all in the room we had. In today's world this is disappointing !

Review 19:The room we had was great with a really nice view. My dad loved his bed and thought it was very comfortable ! Breakfast is good and the staff very friendly.

Review 20:The bed was really comfortable and clean, Nice view from room, and quiet even though they had the builders in. Breakfast was excellent. Staff really great.

Review 21:The breakfast service was rather slow, although the waiting staff were pleasant.

Review 22:The courtyard rooms are really lovely, very tasteful and a touch of luxury. The receptionist was very pleasant and helpful.

Review 23:Builders were working on the property late into the evening, making a lot of noise with swearing and hammering past 22:00. No apology offered by management. Had I known it was going to be a building site I wouldn't have booked. Poor treatment for a regular.

Review 24:Fabulous location

Review 25:Too much noise and building work going on well into the evening which was unfortunate and very restricted places to eat, drink etc. it will be lovely when finished but that will take time.

Review 26:Potential to be a lovely hotel but spoilt by unfinished status

Review 27:Being given an unsuitable room - due to ongoing building work and definitely not a superior room - which we had booked

Review 28:The lovely room - when we asked to change rooms and was definitely more superior than the first one

Review 29:The noisy building works, ( no mention of this before we arrived), the dogs barking in cars next to our room, the poor layout of the bathroom, the poor telephone service at reception when we reported leaving an item behind

Review 30:The staff in the dining room

Review 31:A small problem with room lights that was being rectified. It will be excellent when building works and spa completed.

Review 32:Very comfortable room with lovely en suite and comfortable settee and chairs. Lighting good for reading by.

Review 33:Did not like the tea or coffee. Disappointed with the Merlot and Malbec. These are wines I normally have so was expecting a better quality...given the price

Review 34:Location, comfortable bed, efficient staff

Review 35:Beautiful courtyard room, quality furniture, luxury bathroom and toiletries, nespresso machine, complimentary drinks, huge comfortable bed, excellent staff

Review 36:the price of the rooms was expensive and on our first night (in room 11) someone in the room above us was very loud and stomping around and moving furniture at 12.00am (until I banged on the ceiling) they started again at 7am. Our second night in room 20 was very quiet.

Review 37:the style/decor of the hotel and the location, the staff were excellent

Review 38:We felt that the building work going on interfered with our stay. Other than our room our dog was not welcome in the hotel. We normally find that a dog is welcome somewhere we could sit in comfort with him.

Review 39:The food was good. We did not like the room we were offered initially as it was dark, with a small window looking out on to a brick wall. The second room was better. The bathroom was excellent.

Review 40:builders working around the main stairwell and lift had cables and tools to be stepped over. what happened to health and safety? the main meals were not value for money; in fact poor.

Review 41:the room was very good , but two draws had knobs missing could not be used

Review 42:Room was lovely but we couldn't turn the heating down and it was far too hot.

Review 43:Lovely room and breakfast was very enjoyable. Food hot and great service.

Review 44:Room better than expected with large comfortable bed and nice furnishing. Only recommendation would be to add a 'lighter bites' section to the menu as the full menu could be too much for those with a small appetite.

Review 45:Lot's of building work going on until mid 2016 Single room has not been refurbished and has a poor shower Expensive lunchtime snack options - salmon pate not worth £8!

Review 46:Single room is good value, albeit basic Nice staff Handy location Good breakfast

Review 47:The hotel is undergoing a transformation to a spa. Not sure if this will work in the existing ageing building. In my rooms [I moved two floors up to get away from the drilling] the showers were both hopeless and, a particular pet hate of mine, there were no sheets on the beds, just a duvet which falls off all the time. The staff on reception, as noted in other reviews, aren't that fussed about dealing with customers and seem to find us an irritant. Perhaps this is because they are under pressure at the moment with so much building work going on around them.

Review 48:I liked the location, parking, quality of food, friendly and smiley Hungarian waitress and the decor.

Review 49:Courtyard room very comfortable, excellent furnishings & room amenities. Good nights sleep. Varied choices for 4 course evening meal & breakfast. Would use again.

Review 50:Had to wait 25 minutes for dessert one night when we had guests and then we had to call a waiter over. Rooms did not had any drawers to put small items of clothing and chairs were not comfortable. Found it hard to watch TV in bed.

Review 51:Food was good. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. The Hotel was heated comfortably.

Review 52:Major building operation and refurbishment was taking place during our stay and whilst we were made aware of this prior to our stay, disruption and restricted access to facilities were greater than anticipated

Review 53:Excellent location. Comfortable room with good facilities. Good food and friendly restaurant staff.

Review 54:The room was very small for a double . We stay in a lot of hotels an this room was by far the smallest .

Review 55:The room we stayed in had been refurbished Bed was very comfortable.

Review 56:Hotel very comfortable - very good standard of service and very pleasant staff. Unfortunately the hotel is undergoing improvements so that not all facilities were available but our stay was most enjoyable.

Review 57:The amount of work being done at The Hotel made parking difficult and definately spoilt the view and atmosphere at the hotel,we were not informed of the alterations by the hotel. Single rooms need updating and beds replacing.

Review 58:Food and service in resturant was very good.

Review 59:I don't like is the kitchen staff was left half an hour before the kitchen closing time and when I order the dinner then I gotthe answer from the staff was sorry our chefs are left now.no more food thanks...and that time I was starving..

Review 60:Everthing was good and nice

Review 61:There was building work going on in the hotel, which was noisy. We were warned, but room prices should also have been reduced. The food in the dining room is very rich, which doesn't suit all tastes. We were with my 90-year-old mother and the restaurant food was too rich for her. There is, however, a lighter lunch menu, and it would be good if that were also available in the evenings. We did have something from the lunch menu one evening, but had to put in a special request.

Review 62:The staff were very friendly and helpful and the new/refurbished rooms are very comfortable. The location is also excellent, with sea views from many rooms.

Review 63:Extensions to hotel meant JCBs operating within feet of our bedroom window. Noise level unacceptable.

Review 64:Food excellent- though expensive. Ideal position.

Review 65:1. The hotel is a building site. 2. The Deputy Manager booking us in was not welcoming and unfriendly. 3. No apologies anywhere for the state of the hotel due to building works. 4. The sea view room looked over the building site. 5. TV was on a wall that the beds could not properly see the television. 6. Shower over the bath was a dribble of water.

Review 66:The Bedroom was nicely decorated.

Review 67:On arrival receptionist was rude and unable to cope with the pressures of a hotel under reconstruction.

Review 68:Great location. Food excellent. Value for money.

Review 69:Unfortunately at the time of our stay there were building works going on so felt for the money we paid we did not get the best value

Review 70:The rooms were very spacious and comfortable

Review 71:Had problems with parking in Hotel grounds. Car park was used by Builders and Staff. If you are disabled this is not acceptable as you have to park your vehicle in Local Authority Car Park at 50p per half an hour!!

Review 72:Restaurant Staff were polite and helpful.

Review 73:£2.50 credit card supplement, unbelievable on a bill of over £2,000. Opted to pay by debit card and found that my account was debitted 2 days after checking in - no warning given that charges are taken in advance. Booked 2 dinners with reception, one before arrival, both times the restaurant had no record of our booking. Breakfasts were good but toast always cold.

Review 74:Nice room, great breakfasts, good location.

Review 75:Parking was a problem with builders on site as well as people staying.Ok if your not going out in the car while staying.

Review 76:Nice relaxed hotel. Staff always approachable and helpful.

Review 77:The hotel is currently in the middle of a building site with JCBs Dumper trucks and loud workmen even immediately outside our first floor bedroom window

Review 78:The staff except for the very unhelpful receptionist

Review 79:Work at hotel started quite early and drilling noise unpleasant on one afternoon. Had to complain about 2 dishes - fish was over cooked and Creme brûlée was returned uneaten.

Review 80:Lovely room clean and view was inspring

Review 81:Made the mistake of upgrading to a sea view room . This had scaffolding by window and because of work going on looked out over the building site . Woken up at 8am not by sea but noisy diggers.Room noisy 8.00 - 18.00 . Would have been quieter at back of hotel and cheaper.

Review 82:lovely room that had recently been decorated so bright modern and spacious

Review 83:I did not like the location of the bedroom I was allocated: just in front of the bins of the restaurant on ground floor. Poor bedroom location for the price I paid for 1 night.

Review 84:I liked the bedroom, recently refurbished.

Review 85:We had a lovely short break. Very friendly, helpful and polite staff. New rooms in the courtyard were very clean well appointed. Well stocked mini bar, tea coffee etc. Excellent high specification bath and shower.

Review 86:Staff were generally not welcoming. Room was ok and opened onto a slightly unkempt terrace, but bathroom very cramped and shabby. Nearby housekeeping/staff rooms meant doors were banging late and early. No wifi in room. Our b&b price was very high for what we got.

Review 87:Breakfast was good. View from hotel is nice. Short uphill walk from seafront.

Review 88:building works.( resulted in discount of 50%) terrible coffee, croissants and cereals. getting locked out at 11.45 pm for 15 minutes (no response to bell) superior room very small. no fridge. no shaving mirror.

Review 89:comfortable bed. manager accommodated our complaints.

Review 90:Restoration work ongoing. Won't return until it is completed. Would have preferred aradio in the room

Review 91:Both Accommodation and restaurant. Easy stroll into town. Parking good.

Review 92:There were very minor niggles such as the lack of a bottle opener but honestly in the great scheme of things they were unimportant.

Review 93:We stayed in the courtyard rooms which were refurbished to a very high standard. We loved the little touches like the comfy sofa at the end of the bed and the choice of pillows as well as complimentary drinks. The pool and the terrace were a really nice spot to relax.

Review 94:Room with sea view and balcony - wonderful. Drinks from the rooms mini bar, looking out over the promenade with late evening sun. Fabulous. Breakfast, excellent.

Review 95:The current groundworks are an inconvenience but when finished will add to the hotel's facilities!

Review 96:Excellent location. Beautifully refurbished bedrooms. Excellent food.

Review 97:There was some building work going on, which was unfortunately just below the bedroom window.

Review 98:The room was very modern,& well equipped.T he bathroom likewise, lots of hot water, heated towel rail, very comfortable.

Review 99:The fact that I had BOOKED a Twin Room for my daughter and myself ... We were given a Double room, with an incredibly uncomfortable bed, mattress springs raised and caused extreme discomfort., very little sleep after a very long journey.

Review 100:Undergoing rebuild - which will be lovely as long as it doesn't spoil the ambient relaxed & old fashioned charm of the hotel

Review 101:The staff recognised us from previous visits - the room was very comfortable - gin & sherry most welcome! Parking good

Review 102:The drilling outside the breakfast room - started early and seemed to stop after 9 when everyone had finished their breakfast. In reality even if I knew this was happening in advance I would have still come and it did not really impact on the stay to any material degree.

Review 103:The whole thing - it clearly is pushing itself to be able to compete if not beat the adjacent two hotels. The staff were very hard working and helpful.

Review 104:Nice new room, very confortable, reasonably spacious, free Gin and Sherry. We stayed in the new courtyard block which was more motel like, but we liked it.

Review 105:Although we managed to park the car, space was limited for the size of the hotel and I noticed staff also use the car park

Review 106:Lovely huge comfy bed and very nice bathroom kitted out with the usual bathrobes and slippers

Review 107:Very dated room for the point of being comedic. It was like stepping back in time to the early 70's. The dining area and bar were also very dated much to the amusement of a barman I qas chatting to.

Review 108:Helpful, friendly staff.

Review 109:Not too much really, I'd be being picky if I said 'bad scrambled eggs'... The room and bed were comfortable, however the room was very pokey, also located above the kitchen service area so very very noisy at time when we could have used some quiet (mornings)

Review 110:Very clean and extremely well located for the town and bay area. Room service staff excellent, really friendly and accommodating, the reception staff could take a leaf out of this book, but were helpful. Just not as friendly. Breakfast delivered to room both mornings, not great standard of food.

Review 111:The plumbing could be improved - shower took several minutes to stop running, and washbasins drained away very slowly

Review 112:The staff were excellent - friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable. The food was excellent.

Review 113:Room 14 tho excellently refurbished - suffering from persistent smell of drains. A pumber had been called so hope this is now rectified. Obviously refurbishment of ground floor near the back stairs is still to be done but urgently needs doing.

Review 114:Refurbished and new (in Courtyard) bedrooms excellent. Restaurant meals very high standard - good chef.

Review 115:The room was excellent even a decanter of gin & sherry (2 glasses) complement of the hotel. Bed was massive & very comfortable. Would return there again

Review 116:Nothing that we didn't like but would have preferred free wi-fi in the rooms as well as in public areas.

Review 117:The modern and clean room with excellent sea-view and great position in Sidmouth. We have stayed here many times and will do so again.

Review 118:All very good

Review 119:From arrival to departure Staff very friendly and am sure would have helped in everyway possible if we had any problems but non experienced

Review 120:Would. Be an idea for 'do not disturb ' to save housekeeping staff knocking on room doors at 9 o clock ! Had to ask for toiletries which had run out.

Review 121:The balcony view. Comfortable room. Breakfast was good apart from the crockery which looked like farmhouse kitchen type. Awful light blue rings. White would be nice.

Review 122:The step from the room onto the balcony was very loose and potentially dangerous. Unfortunately, our car was scratched in the car park by persons unknown.

Review 123:We loved the friendly & helpful staff, the food was very good the whole experience was excellent and we shall be returning.

Review 124:Dated hotel under new management of 8 years Harbour Hotel group only done court yard rooms , dining room poor , scruffy and dirty flooring ! Service okay . Breakfast poor had metallic taste to eggs and impression of massed produced produce ! Bit hi de hi characters general age group 69+ place lacks any atmosphere or modern element . Great garden but all stifled in hideous dining room for breakfast !! Children's Meals lack imagination and quality - children can taste and like flavorsum food too!! Come on Harbour Hotels get this place up to scratch!!

Review 125:Good location to town centre , views and pool nice that's about it and yes fab new rooms .

Review 126:Lack of air conditioning in bedroom, and tea/coffee making facilities within a cupboard space.

Review 127:Courtyard room, had lovely bathroom and excellent facilities. Access to main hotel with large dining room and lounges.

Review 128:The eggs at breakfast were a bit disappointmenting; they just weren't good quality. We would have also liked some granola at breakfast, not Kellogg's cereals. The decor in the restaurant also needs updating, as it felt a bit old fashioned.

Review 129:The hotel was in a superb location with a wonderful view of the coast line. We found our stay very comfortable and enjoyed relaxing next to the swimming pool. It was ideal for a relaxing holiday. The rooms are very luxurious. I loved it.

Review 130:Not being able to go to a room until 3pm. It is like the old bed and breakfast days where you were shut out until evening. It is nothing to ask if the room is ready and let one in. Trying to find the barman then being told, as I was waiting for my room, that I was too late for a sandwich and too early for tea and scones. The manageress intervened and said of course I could have them. I was eventually asked if they could show me to my room, of course, it is what reception is for, in my view. \neither could I use the pool during my stay or while I was waiting for my room because there must be two of you, not a single user! That was a major reason for choosing the hotel. Is the hotel there for the customer or the organisation?

Review 131:Lovely place, nice manageress. Being shown to my room.

Review 132:Not sure you could dislike anything about this hotel!

Review 133:We always stay at this fabulous hotel when in Sidmouth as it's just a stone's throw from the beach and town with large car park. This time our room was in the fairly new annex & it certainly did not disappoint!! The bed was so comfy & the bathroom was gorgeous with huge fluffy white bath sheets so luxurious! The staff were so friendly - all in all a wonderful stay. We will be back!

Review 134:Cancelled the stay after having afternoon tea and being served rock hard microwave defrosted scones and bread rolls on there second attempt at scones.

Review 135:Location and views

Review 136:The free wi-fi is not of the quality expected these days. You have to reconnect every time you move from public area to bedroom etc. Connection quality is poor and very variable.

Review 137:Very friendly and helpful staff. Refurbished rooms are of good quality and well decorated.

Review 138:I paid for a seaview but the windows were so filthy I couldn't really see out of it well. The only wifi was available in the lounge/reception downstairs. I got a better reception sitting in my car outside!

Review 139:I loved the location and I had a seaview, great breakfast

The Fine Print

Please note the hotel will be under construction until the end of March 2016 and there will be no option to use the balcony. Guests may experience disruptions during this period.
