Reviews for Llanwenarth Hotel & Riverside Restaurant
Review 1:Customer service was poor. The hotel was in a poor state, the room was so small with a very uncomfortable bed. The view was great but that's all. The cost was extremely high for what you get.
Review 2:The view and the breakfast service, the woman was friendly and attentive.
Review 3:In our room the lower sheet to the beds did not fit over the edge, let alone tuck under and were not the best cotton and old mattresses, no plug in the sink, the loo had waste in it, there were cobwebs and long left dust over the extractor. Some of the fittings were broken. Oh the Ladies toilets in the main restaurant had rotten wood round the bottom, everything was tired. It didn't matter we had a balcony or a nice view. For the standard of room this is well over priced.
Review 4:The main Bar area was warm and friendly and the other public areas. The breakfast was very nice.
Review 5:Staff unhelpful at check in, manager discussing confidential business with accountant and being rude about former staff in the main bar area in full earshot whilst we were waiting to check in.
Review 6:Lovely peaceful view across the river from our balcony
Review 7:None
Review 8:Lovely room with balcony. Evening meal, breakfast and Sunday lunch first class. Alison the owner was brilliant very helpful and accomadating will be back
Review 9:My wife could not stay for breakfast and staff willingly packed her something to eat that I could take to her. (She was with our daughter at a nearby hospital). No fuss was made, it seemed no extra problem for them and it was well received.
Review 10:No soap was provided ; the key didn't open the outer door and the room and lounge area were cold . There was no heating. The shower although potentially good was unregulated and a blast of water was received. The landlord / owner did reply to our complaint and offered a discount next time.
Review 11:Friendly staff
Review 12:on arrival at 9.55pm was told that we couldn't order a drink The reason given was the Staff till up at 9.00 and they close at 10.00. But we had five mins before Ten. I ask could I have a drink and I would pay in the morning the answer was no
Review 13:Breakfast was good
Review 14:The room was excellent, clean, smelt fresh, the bed was so soft and warm, the view from our balcony was beautiful, we will deffinately be staying here again. Thank you
Review 15:staff incredibly friendly and helpful..superb breakfast..nice cosy atmosphere and old charm hotel with an unbeatable view over the river and across the Brecons
Review 16:Staff are very helpful and obliging. We arrived late, as the restaurant was closing but they had no problem letting us order and the food I'd great. Rooms were slightly dated but the location is great if your intention is the Brecon Beacons.
Review 17:The bathroom needed a little attention. The beds creaked every time you turned over. The restaurant was not very clean (slug trails on the carpet next to my table. Stains on the upholstery of my chair. Only one member of staff in the restaurant at breakfast time. He was taking orders, serving food, answering the telephone and taking payments. The restaurant is definitely in need of a good clean, a few flowers and more staff. I think local produce is a good idea, not a Happy Shopper yoghurt!
Review 18:The staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. The room was clean and nicely decorated. The rooms overlooking the river have lovely views and are quiet. There is no noise from the road.
Review 19:Room a bit small with cramped bathroom
Review 20:Beautifully situated on River Usk; room has balcony overlooking river with stunning views of mountains. Restaurant menu excellent with great food
Review 21:Only the entrance to the hotel "The carpet" was slightly grubby/dirty" Maybe that's due to visitors in their dirty muddy boots. Also the bar at the hotel wasn't open. So we had to go back down the road to the pub for a nightcap.
Review 22:We loved the room and the lovely views and the large bath "We love a bath - en suite". All staff were very sweet and kind. Would loved to have had the time to stay for longer. Hope to be back next year. The fab breakfast set us up for the rest of our long day.
Review 23:The bedroom, although not particularly spacious was very comfortable, good view over the valley & in spite of being on a busy road, no traffic noise! The evening meal was well prepared.
Review 24:The hotel was uncared for and in need of some major updates. Furniture was very used and very stained carpets were disgusting and windows looked like they've not been cleaned in along time. Outside terrace areas were basically over grown with weeds and kitchen staff cigarette ends, even found a mouldy cup of tea which had obviously been left outside along time. Our room was tiered furniture stained and the mattress had seen better days we didn't sleep well and had bad backs our quilt cover was ripped down one side and wasn't changed for the duration of our stay. There was no hand soap in bathroom and we were told there was shower gel. There was no wifi in the hotel the entire stay and no lighting in corridor outside our room used phone as torch. We booked a table in restaurant on bank holiday Sunday eve and were told no Al a crate menu only the Sunday lunch menu we ordered the roast beef served pink and received two wafer thin curled up over cooked pieces of beef obviously left overs from lunch time we had two roast potatoes each which again were reheated as rock hard and one small floret of cauliflower for us to share two small pieces of courgettes and carrots and beans enough to feed a small child. Id be embarrassed as a chef to serve up Sunday leftovers to paying guests which were paying over 100 pounds a night. The whole experience was awful can honestly say worse hotel ever stayed in and defo won't be recommending even locals advised us of better places to eat thoroughly recommend The Bear in Crickhowell. Owner of this hotel definitely needs to learn the art of hospitality and teach her staff some manners not leave people sat at tables for ages waiting to be asked for a drink. Sorry I'm very angry and disappointed this was a birthday treat and ended up being a break from hell. Total waste of well earnt money.
Review 25:Seeing otters in the river and the day we left to come home.
Review 26:This was meant to be special. The actual day's menu was nowhere near as good as the "sample" given. The room was overly hot. I don't understand what is so special about the location, its next to a car showroom and on a busy road. Someone offered to visit my room to turn off the radiators, but didn't tell me he was the proprietor. The other guests were - well one tried to interfere in my menu choice. I asked for "plenty of toast" and was given 16 pieces - a mickey take? Overcooked bacon. Plumbing noisy, and no cold water in taps - unable to get a cool drink in the night. Dirty furniture and hair in the plugholes.
Review 27:Not much - breakfast was okay. They got us another pillow, but why was there only one each to begin with? I have always given solid reviews, as I love staying in hotels.
Review 28:No access to cold water from midnight onwards wich was worrying. No one in bar o reception and bedroom tap was hot. No effort to speak Welsh with customers.
Review 29:Beautiful area.
Review 30:Nothing but I would want other travelers to know, it is isolated, so great if you have a car but a one night treat if, like me, you're relying on public transport.
Review 31:The location is so beautiful. You have views of the River Usk and Brecon Beacons. Also the restaurant is a little expensive but for good reason. Within the first bite, I knew I was in for a treat.
Review 32:Rear view from balcony spoilt by completely overgrown river bank belonging to hotel, with rubbish from room (eg empty wine bottle) thrown over balcony. Gardens generally need tending. Generally functional breakfast except for smoked haddock which was completely uncooked in the middle. We asked the waitress to tell the chef, which she did.
Review 33:Convenient location, helpful and friendly staff. Room reasonably comfortable. We arrived early and although our room (as expected) wasn't ready, we were able to leave our luggage and they readily offered us a key to the outer door as we expected to be late coming back that evening.
Review 34:outside terrace in poor condition, overgrown with weeds and not swept bed very uncomfortable waited a long time on arrival and not very welcoming member of staff
Review 35:views breakfast waiting staff friendly good car park
Review 36:small dark bedroom menu was somewhat restricted, particularly the second night, when the staff seemed to disappear and we gave up on our dessert.
Review 37:the views from the dining room and lounge large car park were marvellous.
Review 38:This is our second visit. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the River Usk. Very peaceful and relaxing. Great food, clean and helpful staff. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Review 39:Some of the carpets in public areas could do with some tlc and some attention to detail in public areas, could do with shelf in bathroom for sponge bag etc
Review 40:We had a balcony room overlooking the river and the Brecon Beacons which was lovely. Th breakfast had a good selection and the staff were friendly and helpful
Review 41:Didn't realise that the room would be 2 single beds, no notification at the time of booking this could happen. The hotel was located on a main road and our room was located on the roadside. The otherside of the hotel had beautiful views with balcony. Did not think that this was worth the price we paid for the room.
Review 42:It was in a good location just outside crickhowell where the wedding was located and letting us check in early was great! Breakfast in the morning was delicious.
Review 43:room was a bit hot but open a window and it was all good
Review 44:Staff where all excellent, clean tidy well looked after. Restaurant is a must - evening meal good choice breakfast excellent again
Review 45:Nothing to dislike.
Review 46:The view, the staff, the location were great. Parking was easy. We were attending the Hay Festival, the separate access to the bedroom accommodation was most convenient after late night events.
Review 47:Better than we dared to hope! It really was overlooking the river Usk. The room was compact, and the bathroom more so, but the balcony was wonderful. We looked out over the Usk valley and the sound of the river gurgling past was slightly masked by birdsong.
Review 48:My only criticism would be that I wish breakfast had been served earlier. The breakfast itself was excellent but I was attending the Hay Festival and couldn't manage breakfast when I had a 9.00 am event, as it's only served from 8.00 am.
Review 49:The view. My room - comfortable, warm, cosy.
Review 50:They closed really early - we got back at about 10.30 hoping for a drink in the bar but everything was locked up and no staff anywhere! Also had a few problems with the wifi.
Review 51:Lovely views from the room/balcony. Excellent breakfast.
Review 52:Rooms get too warm at night, slept both nights with the balcony door open to combat it, but it's either too cold or too hot. No easy way to switch off the heated towel rail which I think was contributing to the warmth of the room. Bed not comfy either so between the bed and the heat we struggled to sleep. Restaurant evening dinner mostly good, not outstanding, service slow, but good quality ingredients. Breakfast very good, recommended!
Review 53:Location very convenient and the bedrooms (and dining room) with balcony views over the river were very special. Balconys for the bedrooms to sit out on in the evenings also a real plus.
Review 54:I have very acute sensitive hearing so the only problem for me was a noise of a fan or generator buzzing all night which seemed to be coming from above our room which stopped me having a good night's sleep. My husband didn't hear it so unless you are like me it won't be a problem. Will definitely opt for a balcony room next time though.
Review 55:We only booked last minute for one night so missed out on a room with a view and a balcony but although small our room was pleasant and the beds comfy. We had a wonderful Sunday lunch and following a visit to the Hay Festival got back just in time for another delicious light meal. Beautiful view from both the restaurant and the conservatory. Lovely to have a late check out time next day so we stayed around to relax and enjoy the view then had another excellent meal before leaving. Will certainly be back to the restaurant even if we don't manage to stay.
Review 56:We were unlucky in that we got a room facing onto the very busy and noisy road. The Full Welsh breakfast was rather bland and mediocre, although other breakfast menu items, such as porridge and salmon/scrambled eggs were very good.
Review 57:Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable, and tastefully furnished. Extra pillows, blankets etc provided in the rooms.
Review 58:Bathroom very small reminded us of a caravan bathroom , bedroom furniture the same , tired carpet , A bit pricey at £95 a room .
Review 59:The view from rooms where lovely , the location was spot on , and the food was amazing .
Review 60:staff that greeted us not very friendly. room needed more cleaning attention.frontal untidy, car park needs more roadside appeal. river view from balcony after scrub-land...
Review 61:morning staff very friendly and efficient, great breakfast.
Review 62:Very small bathroom. We had no internet access in the room.
Review 63:Hotel is beautifully situated and gives a lovely view of the surrounding hills and the river Usk. Make sure you book a room with a river view. The staff are very friendly and helpfull. Breakfast is good for a hard days walking. Crickhowell is a charming little village.
Review 64:Other guests were rude. If you have an unhappy life don't share your issues with the rest of the hotel.
Review 65:The staff were very friendly, professional. The location was beautiful, the room was very clean and well decorated. The views breath taking.
Review 66:Food was mediocre at best, much better off heading to Crickhowell to one of the lovely pubs which are cheaper and much better. The room was a decent size with good power shower bed was small and my partner didn't get a good nights sleep due to this, I was fine! The hotel does sit on a very busy road so if you don't have a room overlooking the valley it would have been terrible. All of this would have been fine had we not been treated so rudely on check out. We questioned some items on the bill and the manager could even be bothered to turn around and deal with it. She just shouted over her shoulder that we were wrong but whatever "if that's what she says". Not sure the word hospitality features highly here... Was happy to leave and wouldn't stay again. Shame really as all the other staff seemed friendly!
Review 67:The view from the restaurant and rooms is exceptional.
Review 68:No shower water pressure just a trickle. Told checkout girl and did not apologise but said would tell maintenance.
Review 69:Comfy bed with nice river view.good breakfast.
Review 70:Dirt on the bedroom walls, blocked up & dusty extracter fan, toilet paper not replaced, waitrons not very attentive, inconsistent service.
Review 71:Good location & lovely views but the hotel is lacking the attention to finer details.
Review 72:Absolutely nothing, compared to Llandudno this was in a different league for a similar cost
Review 73:Everything. Beautiful location, lovely room, lovely staff. An absolute jem. Quality of food ie Breakfast and evening meal, 100% Very sorry I was unable to stay longer, value for money 200% Complete value for money.
Review 74:Excellent room for 3 people including a disabled adult. Very filling breakfast and Evening meal was so good we didn't bother to even think about dining elsewhere during the two nights we were there.
Review 75:Nothing we did not like.
Review 76:The location for us was ideal, the staff were very helpful and the food was exceptional. Breakfast is fit for a king and set us up for the whole day which was needed as we were on a trekking break. Liked the bar with the welcoming fire toasty. Will certainly stay again.
Review 77:Nothing ...place staff location comfort food beer ....all exellent
Review 78:The staff without a shadow of a doubt, they were very polite courteou?s friendly and most helpful.on the evening of our stay the restraunt was fully booked ,and there had been a mix up with the timing of our meal the young lady behind the bar tried to accommodate us but explained the situation ,however,a cancellation had been made and the young lady made it her business to inform us of the change in the situation and changed our evening meal time accordingly a big thanks for that
Review 79:Friendliness of staff. Easy to locate . Quality of food and comfort Sadly, arrived too late and left too early following morning to enjoy the superb river views.
Review 80:Would have appreciated being warned that the restaurant books up quickly. I prewarned the hotel that my husband was arriving around 7pm, so it would have been a good idea to let us know in advance that it would be wise to pre-book. My husband and son had to drive to town instead after a very tiring day driving from Bournemouth to Aberystwyth and then to the hotel. Not a criticism - just an idea for future reference.
Review 81:The view over the river
Review 82:Having left keys with reception we had difficulty getting back in as the bar had closed and the building locked up. However a telephone call produced our keys.
Review 83:A beautiful location with views across river valley. Wood burning stove made for a warm welcome on arrival.
Review 84:Stayed two nights. Breakfast...the "Full Welsh" excellent. Had dinner one night, the lamb for two tip top. Highly recommended. A river view in the restaurant adds to the occasion. Will definitely return.
Review 85:Bathroom a squeeze and short on flat surface. bedside lamp didn't work
Review 86:Pleasing. Hotel cold on arrival due toheating changeover. Warmed up quickly and all was okay. The menu was local and good. The cooking both dinner and breakfast not quite to same standard as last visit but acceptable. Go for riverside balcony
Review 87:Right on a busy road; parts of the building a bit shabby - needs a good clear up!
Review 88:Staff were great; food was terrific; views impressive; room and bed very comfortable.
Review 89:Having to leave!
Review 90:Staff went out of their way to look after us. We were exhausted on arrival and overslept - missed breakfast, but they made us a lovely full Welsh breakfast anyway, with lots of coffee and toast, too. Chatted with us, warmed our room nicely on a cold day...it was like coming home.
Review 91:We paid £95 off season (during October) for b&b. Our room, while clean and comfortable, was very much a standard double. We felt that the price was too high and would have preferred to have paid around £75. There are a lot of wedding venues close by to the hotel and we guessed that the they are charging more because wedding guests will simply pay that price!
Review 92:Location View over the river Friendly staff Good breakfast
Review 93:Clearly upgrade of plumbing going on but area was not tidy between conservatory & accommodation -pipes, old bits of lagging & ladders on view. A couple of hours work on the area and car park approach to main building would bring this up to the excellent standard of the inside.
Review 94:Staff cheerful, friendly & efficient Food excellent - fantastic menu & beautiful dining room. View down to river Usk & across to hills from bedroom balcony, conservatory & dining room. Lovely bar area & decor is good.
Review 95:The reception of the wifi was not great throughout all buildings.
Review 96:It was a great stay in a lovely, clean and spacious room. The staff was very helpful in accommodating all of us. We had access to a patio overlooking the river during the day and the breakfast, which was included in the room, was fantastic - made on the spot with fresh products. A really great weekend stay, thank you!
Review 97:As you look more closely the hotel is somewhat jaded and in need of some considerable TLC. A shame really because moderate expenditure could make a considerable improvement
Review 98:First appearances are very good and it is a very pretty hotel inside and out. Nice bar and dining room with friendly helpful staff.
Review 99:-A gardener waking me up at 7.30am strimming. -The room had stained mis-matching tea cups - change them to clean mugs. -I had to fill the kettle from the bath as it didn't fit in the sink. It spilt half the water when i lifted it back from under the tap - I could hear another guest chatting very clearly to his wife til 11.30pm. Although this wasn't directly the hotels fault, it did annoy me.
Review 100:Location View My free upgrade My rooms decor Food Staff Room well stocked. Water was hot.
Review 101:The only downside was that the 3 course dinner offered at a very reasonable price was the same for both nights we stayed. Not really a problem we just chose from the al a carte menu.
Review 102:Everything, conveniently situated for sightseeing. Excellent food. Staff really pleasant. Would definitely stay again
Review 103:All a bit dated and the carpets stained. Restaurant expensive for a business stop over dinner.
Review 104:Balcony room overlooking excellent countryside. Comfy bedroom. Nice breakfast.
Review 105:I am not sure that I would have wanted a room roadside as the traffic in the morning appeared to be quite heavy.
Review 106:The whole experience was very enjoyable. The room we had a balcony view over the river and mountains. The room was spotless and the bed very comfortable. The staff were helpful and courteous and although we only had breakfast on this stay it was really good.
Review 107:A couple of minor things: Breakfast coffee was sometimes a little lukewarm. For a time, the tv lost reception.
Review 108:Good food - breakfast ok but evening meals are of a high standard. Excellent location for exploring the area by foot, car or bike. Also, my room had a proper power shower, perfect after a long bike ride.
Review 109:bathroom very small and the garden needs attention
Review 110:Food was great and the restaurant was very warm and welcoming. Staff were very helpful and the location was great
Review 111:Bathroom was a little bit small, but perfectly adequate.
Review 112:Loved the bedroom balcony with river view, very special. Also the position of the restaurant was lovely, gazing down over the beautiful river valley whilst having breakfast, very peaceful .
Review 113:Very noisy during the day - hotel is right on a busy main road and there's a motorbike track running around some woodland opposite so it was very noisy! Beds were creaky and very hard mattresses, so didn't get a great night's sleep. Decor is very dated.
Review 114:Lovely view out across the hills
Review 115:Room 202 - Although reasonably comfortable, the hotel generally has a tired and dated look and feel to it. A table & chair were broken on one of our balconies. Beds creaked loudly when turning over. Rooms very hot unless patio door was left open at night. No plug in bathroom sink, flush button on toilet broken, shower head sank down the pole during use and shower screen did not fit against bath edge. Only one pillow per bed. No full-length hanging facility in wardrobe - we were attending a wedding and had dresses to hang. However, none of this detracted from our visit for my daughter's wedding in Crickhowell.
Review 116:Stunning views from balcony. Friendly & helpful staff. Good parking Easy to find. Fantastic breakfasts (did not have any other meals)
Review 117:The back of the hotel is on a very busy road and there was always traffic noise. It did not disturb us at it night but meant we were not as tranquil as we might have been on the river. It also meant that we couldn't walk out easily from the hotel.
Review 118:The view of the river Usk from our room was lovely. The staff were welcoming and relaxed and we felt free to wander about and enjoy the conservatory and other features. The breakfast was excellent and service at breakfast very helpful. The room was comfortable and clean and we enjoyed having a sunny balcony. Parking was easy
Review 119:Balconies and garden needed a little tlc.
Review 120:Good room with fantastic view . Wonderful staff and service Fantastic breakfast and a la carte dinner. Best food ever. Lovely relaxing hotel, with nice conservatry to sit in with the papers
Review 121:BATHROOM TOO SMALL, ROOMS CAN DO WITH SOME UPDATING, MENU CAN DO WITH SOME MORE SELECTION
Review 122:LOCATION, FRIENDLY STAFF, FOOD, VERY NICE F.O.C. BITING BEFORE DINNER - MADE FRESH BY THE CHEF, EXCELLENT SHOWER
Review 123:Flies everywhere in dining room, which made eating uncomfortable.. Theyhad a sewage problem outside which was being worked on as we left, soprobably not always like that. Our room was not serviced properly, looked as though it had been started and abandoned half done which wasdisappointing.
Review 124:Staff very obliging. Food very good. Lovely views. Very near abergavennyand crickhowell, both worth a visit.
Review 125:Room noot as described by Booking.com. Some rooms are impossibly noisy even for a good sleeper. Apart from traffic noise and poor soundproofing, there is the noisiest boiler in the world to wake you up at 5.30am.
Review 126:Good staff, restaurant and wifi.
Review 127:The restaurant experience was disappointing. Charred whitebait and soggy batter on the seafood starter; cauliflower cheese fritters on the main course side were fused into burnt embers. No chef should have let these out of his/her kitchen. However, apologies were given and alternatives delivered (for the main side) with a discount on the bill. Poor (limited) choice of side dishes. Don't choose 'deep fried' here!
Review 128:Service was excellent, all the staff were helpful and courteous. The place was spotlessly clean. The room was adequate (just). The balcony overlooking the river and away from the road lifted the rating to 'good'. The bathroom was very narrow. We are elderly but fairly agile but larger people would struggle to use the toilet without burning themselves on the hot towel rail (in a heatwave in July!).
Review 129:Small point only, room needed a little updating, but no serious problem.
Review 130:Bar/restaurant/housekeeping staff very efficient, helpful and friendly. Magnificent location. Surprising and welcome freedom from traffic noise.
Review 131:Variable wifi connection throughout hotel. A la carte menu only which was a bit pricey but yes the food was excellent. Needs a basic cheaper menu too.
Review 132:My bedroom complete with balcony was quiet and gave me stunning views over the river Usk and mountains beyond. Clean and tidy hotel
Review 133:Nothing - there was nothing to complain about!
Review 134:The rooms were spotless and the balcony with the river view was a lovely added bonus. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed. Another added bonus was the good sized bath - loads of room for a good soak ! The food was perfect !!! I ate dinner and breakfast and both were delicious!!!!
Review 135:Couldnt fault anything.
Review 136:Everything at the hotel was superb. The food was fantastic and the staff friendly and helpful. The views over the River Usk were great. The room was beautiful and spotlessly clean.
Review 137:Hotel is a bit tatty - a badly-needed weeding and tidying would work wonders as the potential is there. Had a poor meal in the restaurant - far too much deep-fried ingredients.
Review 138:The room was nice and the views are really special over the river valley. Staff were helpful and attentive.
Review 139:Bathroom a little small, watch the towel heater, it's hot if your legs touch it!
Review 140:Lots of lovely views, great food and helpful staff. Good quality attractive rooms, made for a lovely weekend.
