Reviews for The Market Hotel

Review 1:No staff on in morning exit through fire door after 10 min wander through pub old building steep stair case if you are not young and fit dont try it No breakfast

Review 2:Location

Review 3:A few things sorry. The lighting in the room was on a dimmer switch which didn't go bright enough, especially for a woman putting on make-up. Ideally needed another light on the dressing table. Also when we had a shower there was a strong smell of sewage coming from either the toilet or one of the plug holes (sink or the shower), and when you flushed the toilet there was a loud noise, were guessing the system put in to drain away the shower water as the noise happened when we showered, and allow pressure for the toilet to flush which then after the noise the smell of sewage would appear.

Review 4:The decoration of the room was good, and the location for the event we were attending was great.

Review 5:I stay regularly in the Alton area. The room has no blinds in the bathroom so I had to shower with the light off poor neighbours. There was dust everywhere. It needs some attention if I am to stay again

Review 6:Location is good and the staff were helpful

Review 7:Need to get a receipt for the full amount when checking in. When booking online, you pay £40 and when the arrive you pay the difference. I only have a receipt for the difference paid at the hotel. As this is company travel I have to find out a way to get a receipt for the other £40. A pain.

Review 8:Friendly staff & excellent food. Value for money.

Review 9:The hotel is tired in many aspects. The furniture looks as if it came from second hand shops. It was cold so we were given an electric heater,it was very dirty and the switch would not have passed a PAT test,in fact the plug top was missing any form of PAT test sticker. The bedside lamp was missing its shade and the switch and flex was very dirty. In between the bedroom and the bathroom there was an area that has a PIR operated light so that when anybody used the toilet the lights come on and wake anybody else in the room. Would I stay there again ? No.

Review 10:It's location.

Review 11:The very rude neighbour, whom 'was going to report us', my wife and I for trespassing, when entering late on Sunday evening. We wondered around lady place a bit before finding the rear gate!!

Review 12:When it came to checking out the woman on duty just held out her hand & said "keys"! I was standing with my bag at the front door & she pointed me to the back door, up steps and around narrow passage ways with my bag. When I asked if I could go out the front door she looked quite annoyed, as it meant she had to unlock it.

Review 13:Good dinner, friendly bar staff.

Review 14:No Breakfast service.

Review 15:The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and tidy. the food at the hotel was cooked well and presented well. Would i stay here again Yes

Review 16:The room overlooked the main nightlife area & we did not get any sleep until gone 1am due to the nouse levels. No double glazing as I presume building is grade 2 listed

Review 17:The hotel staff were very friendly & 24 access once checked in

Review 18:Shower didn't work properly, but bath ok. No breakfast offered. No staff on hand in the morning, had to let myself out through the back yard. Loud music playing till midnight on Friday, but not really a problem for me.

Review 19:Convenient - room above the pub where I was attending a function. Room was clean, bed was reasonably firm but poor quality.

Review 20:Staff totally disinterested, hardly spoke to us apart from giving us our key there was no breakfast available, it is a pub/hotel with live music til 1.30am on the nights we were there. The loo is a saniflo which is very noisy.

Review 21:Nice area, nice room

Review 22:Shower did not work. Alarm had gone off for more than 5 minutes and there was no staff to at least reassure that it was a false alarm or to evacuate. So I quickly left the building.

Review 23:Wi-Fi was a little slow.

Review 24:The staff were very good. They don't serve breakfast unfortunately. The room was small but comfortable, could be improved by air conditioning. I would definitely stay there again.

Review 25:It did not bother us but some people may not wish to be in such a busy night spot. The hotel is part of a restaurant/bar complex in a charming square with other restaurants and bars. It is a safe environment but may be too noisy at night on weekends for some people.

Review 26:Friendly staff in a very central location. The room was clean and neat. It had a boutique hotel feel. Hot chocolate in addition to tea was a nice extra.

Review 27:Join us for breakfast 7.30-8.00. No one was there, all doors locked and we left by fire escape. There was no option to book breakfast through Booking.com and this wasn't mentioned when booked in. Spoke to a random member of staff who said she would arrange breakfast for rest of stay. Doors remained locked, and we got a copy of booking left by room stating breakfast had not been booked! They are missing the point, or rather the opportunity to upsell! Very noisy from other pubs, but we knew that.

Review 28:We stayed a Saturday night, the room overlooked the square. There was noise from the local nightclub until 1am.

Review 29:It was a cheap & convenient hotel. The young man who welcomed us was very courteous. Good hospitality tray.

Review 30:Room was thrown together. Nothing matched. Curtains ragged at the bottom, not even hemmed. Empty soap dispenser. No complimentary toiletries. No sugar for tea. No glasses for cold drinks. Bathroom blind broken so no privacy and room was overlooked. Shower head wobbly and pinged off the wall when water came through. Smelled unclean. Carpet filthy. Mattress was laying on springs. Very loud music (vibrating walls) from the bar until 01.15am even though we were told we had a quiet room. No wardrobe just 2 hooks. Very old furniture, worn and stained. Access to rooms only through the bar. Breakfast between 9.30-10am and checkout at 10.30. Chef was told nobody for breakfast so he had to be called out at the last minute. Long wait made us late for meeting friends.

Review 31:Located close to our venue. Handy car park at the back. Staff friendly but didn't seem to know what they were doing

Review 32:Bright sunlight shining into room from sunrise, strange electric water drainage pump noise form toilet/bathroom, noisy enough to wake the dead, makes one scared to run any water or flush toilet too late at night or early in morning.

Review 33:The lack of breakfast. But i couldnt remember if the site said it was included or not. I am sure it was but couldnt check.

Review 34:Location and convenience and the chap who checked us in was really helpful and chatty. Top rate service.

Review 35:We had no sheets on the bed so had to sleep on the mattress protector which was not at all pleasant. Because I had read previous reviews I was prepared for it to be a bit noisy however I had not expected to have loud music until 1 in the morning followed by 10 minutes silence then even more music, all be it at slightly lessened decibels. The kitchen extractor fan which was about 12 feet from the bedroom window filled the room with the aroma of the deep fat fryers which is fine if you like smelling of chips!!! Breakfast is served between 9.30 - 10.00 at weekends however when we went down at 9.25 we were met by the cleaner who informed us that there was no one else on the premises and suggested we went into town to get breakfast which was made worse as it was pouring with rain. All in all what was meant to be a lovely weekend treat was a real let down and we both feel very disappointed.

Review 36:The staff were very welcoming

Review 37:overall it was a very nice place to stay, I must say amie the manager was always very polite very nice girl, I would recommend this hotel, and I wouldn't hesitate returning.

Review 38:So disappointed as online looked so quirky but when shown to room dirty unwashed cups and milk jug, no light bulb in side light, empty shower gel bottle in shower and dirty shower tray, toilet under lid obviously not cleaned for days and still wasn't the next day once pointed out to manageress ! Really need change the cleaner as overall cleanliness in general very poor. Bed comfort poor, noisy till 1am as facing onto Market square people outside smoking from other establishments. staff friendly, but would not recommend this hotel to friends in present condition

Review 39:Poor quality evening meal, mediocre staff response to it. Dirty rooms- free bottle of wine given as recompense! We asked for an earlier breakfast on the Sat and were promised it; however it was not ready and in the end served too late for two of us.

Review 40:Good breakfast, good wifi, convenient location. Rapid attention given to non functioning lights in room.

Review 41:kept awake til 4am with noise from pub, room wasnt clean still rubbish in bin, bar staff werent aware of us coming. Disapeared for a while i recon they were checkin which room was cleanist breakfast was between 9.30 / 10 not helpful as over slept due to noise in night

Review 42:the bed was comfy

Review 43:The room was not as clean as I'm used to. A lot of dust on top of the wardrobe (which being a fairly short wardrobe and me being over 6 foot made it very unmissable). Only car parking was pay and display in a public car park, but was very closeby.

Review 44:Seems to be under new management. Friendly reception, greeted me by name and offered to carry my bag. A bit disorganised, but not a problem and was more than happy to ring me a taxi as I was heading out immediately after checking in. The whole place looks to have been fairly recently overhauled, in a modern style using what looks to be reclaimed fittings and hardware. Big flatscreen tv on the wall.

Review 45:We stayed on a Saturday night and the pub was VERY busy. Our room was directly above the dj and the music went on past 1am

Review 46:Very clean and comfortable room. Interesting and quirky bar area and a lovely breakfast.

Review 47:No remote for telly so telly had to be replaced. Noisey cistern...shook the hotel! Automatic lights in bathroom that took ages to switch off ....not good when your trying to sleep. Shower had to run around it to get wet!

Review 48:Staff excellent they must be used to apologising !

Review 49:Very noisy late at night - partying went on in the pub with unnecessarily blaring loud music inside and outside in the market square until after 1am. The pub next door also had live music being played with their windows open onto the square so it was bedlam. Our room overlooked the square - not good for sleeping! However it was a Christmas late opening night when we stayed so it might have been an exceptional night, but I would guess that it gets noisy every Saturday night until late! A young person's pub!

Review 50:Located in middle of town - a lively pub with a good selection of beers. Rather strange décor! Car park close by - free after 6pm. Friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast.

Review 51:Parking was a but of a pain as it was separate

Review 52:Location was lovely, hotel was really clean and looked after. Had a brick wall finish and modern wallpapered walls. Definitely would recommend

Review 53:No decent mirror in the room or bathroom!

Review 54:It was a lovely little pub hotel in the middle of Alton with a big room and lovely ensuite. Very comfortable. Would recommend.

Review 55:The side lights didn't work in the room! The staff although friendly enough, seemed disorganised and not knowing what to do when serving our breakfast or where anything was!

Review 56:The bed was exceptionally comfortable, the shower was very powerful and there was tea and coffee making facilities in the room - which is a rare thing these days! Really convenient location!

Review 57:- No mattress protectors on beds.- No hairdrying facilities - Wardrobe door did not clause but it DID contain an empty vodka bottle (not our's) rolling around in it...hence poor rating for cleanliness - Concur with other reviewer who said it was overpriced by £10 - £20.

Review 58:Excellent location and staff were friendly. Having read the previousreviews, I expected a "room above the pub" and consider thatthis was exactly what we got.

Review 59:Shabby chic but little comfort and lack of attention to detail. Noise from rear patio of pub below. Poor breakfast choice and layout.

Review 60:Town centre location so convenient to local shops and plenty of restaurants

Review 61:Poor service. Poor facilities. Lack of attention to detail. Light with movement sensor. Level of cleanliness. Expensive for the overall standard.

Review 62:Comfortable Beds. Good breakfast. Central location.

Review 63:Breakfast Quality and Service appalling. One meagre cup of tea offered (no orange juice) - my colleague opted for coffee and couldn't drink it due to a film of grease and fat on the top once it had been plonked before him! Cooked breakfast was 'adequate', no toast offered (or preserves as suggested in the welcome book) - don't normally bother with reviews but this was so average I felt compelled to write a few words! If you have to stay here - opt for the 'no breakfast' option and eat in the town! Poor Show! Oh and one other thing - the milk pot was cracked and had a layer of dirt inside!

Review 64:Helpful chap at check in assisted us with getting the keys early once I'd explained we were going to be out for the day and didn't want to occupy the room until later

Review 65:The bed was the most uncomfortable that I've ever slept in, other than when I've gone camping and slept on the ground. It was hard, but as if it had a hole in the middle we kept falling into. When we checked out, my husband told them to take it out and shoot it. Also, the B&B seems to be a side business for the pub. The staff is only around when the pub is open, you have to use a back door when the pub is closed (and it doesn't open early), etc. In addition, our room was at the back of the pub, directly over a patio where patrons and staff went to smoke, so we had to close the windows quite often to keep out the smoke--and there was no air conditioning. Like most B&Bs in Europe, there is no elevator, so you have to drag your stuff up a flight of stairs (no staff to help--we checked in with a waitress at the pub).

Review 66:As far as hotels in Alton go, this one is very quiet. It is off the main road but very convenient to everything in town and right next to an excellent restaurant. The pub it is a part of has good food too. It was clean, bright, and decorated with antiques.

Review 67:No breakfast, the bathroom was a little dirty in tucked away places. No tea spoon. Friendly staff though.

Review 68:No breakfast option, it would have been helpful to have a list of local cafes or restaurants that do breakfasts

Review 69:Good size room, friendly staff

Review 70:noise from court yard till 1am and very lound music.

Review 71:staff were very good

Review 72:The music blasting till 1am. Just wish I had been pre warned

Review 73:The shabby chic look

Review 74:No breakfast

Review 75:The staff were very helpful and friendly

Review 76:Food was spot on nice one Dav

Review 77:Only one set of towels for a couple. Noisy area if you want to sleep before 2 am on a Fri/Sat.

Review 78:Location and pleasant room.

Review 79:Dirty, noisy a bad experience never never again

Review 80:All staff were very helpful and also organised for someone to drive me to my wedding venue when there was no taxis available.

Review 81:Friendly staff, good atmosphere and good food.

Review 82:wi fi this was hard as i was away from home and battled to get on internet for work

Review 83:the staff and location .

Review 84:Little bit dated on the stairs and landing

Review 85:Lovely staff, especially the young lady behind the bar.

Review 86:Inexpensive with central location, convienient car parking but you have to pay.

Review 87:Nothing we did not like

Review 88:The staff were very helpful and could not do enough to help us, the locals were chatty and the bed was super comfy

Review 89:Lovely little quirky hotel - great value for money

Review 115:Room was pleasantly warm. Cheerful colours Good coffee at breakfast.

Review 116:weather on the Monday but that was nothing to do with the hotel

Review 117:location, dinner menu staff price

Review 118:Rooms could do with a good clean

Review 119:Bar was decent Staff were friendly

Review 120:Very expensive for what was quite a basic facility

Review 121:The breakfast was quite good.

Review 122:Smelly cushions on bed.

Review 123:Comfortable bed,shower tv

Review 124:Not a hotel- rooms above a pub. Arrived for a pre-arranged early check in and the bar staff had to call a manager as no clue about us. Taken to our room, no discussion about anything. Bed sank under us (and I weigh only 63kg) poor decor, dirty covers and sides. Bathroom blind broken halfway up and had sign saying don't touch! Windows had no locks. Not worth the money. Came back late and thankfully someone very kindly let us in and was very polite. Wanted us to make payment there and then though- gone midnight when we were drunk! Stay elsewhere if possible, I'm usually pretty easy going with hotels but this was pretty poor.

The Fine Print
