Reviews for The Queens at Selborne
Review 1:The room had several faults the furniture needs updating so as you can get ready for your daytime or evening activities. The bathroom was very large with the minium of furniture.
Review 2:The staff was very helpful and the facilities out of the room were very good.
Review 3:Not really a bad experience, but the bed was a bit squeaky.
Review 4:The rooms are decorated to a high standard and each has an individual theme. The pub is cosy.
Review 5:Neither heating or shower were functional in our room, so we had to be relocated into a different room. Whilst the shower wasworking in this room the heating was not and we were given an electric fan heater to use.
Review 6:Rooms are large and spacious and evening food good, although breakfast was not a full english as expected
Review 7:The lady that greeted up seemed quite rude, straight away asked if we were dining with them that evening and when our response was maybe seemed a little annoyed. Had a King Room which looked quite nice on the website but is actually horrible. The room was freezing, old horrible carpet, cobwebs on the chandelier, uncomfortable bed with low quality bedding, bathroom looked nice but not functional. Shower hose doesn't stay up so had to hold it with one hand whilst showing. Smallest TV I've seen for a while which is about 5 meters away from the bed. Not worth £90 for 1 night. In comparison we stayed in the solent hotel and spa for 1 night for around the same money the night before and the service was great, lovely room and cooked breakfast. Go elsewhere.
Review 8:In a lovely rural village location. Fresh pastries at breakfast
Review 9:No little soap (there was one in my daughters and mothers rooms) no biscuits (ditto), breakfast was a little haphazard and the crossiants were cheap brioche on the second morning, but were delicious on the first! The fruit looked a little tired too.
Review 10:Location is lovely, room was clean. The hotel is located in the village my brothers lives but there is not enough room for the whole family to stay, so The Queens is a regular place for us over the last few years.
Review 11:Not that we didn't like it, but breakfast was a little "hit and miss". Could have been organised a little better.
Review 12:The friendliness of the staff, who had a willingness to help and were able to hold a constructive conversation. The food was good value for money, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Overall The Queens at Selbourne was good value for money.
Review 13:shower, water pressure was so poor difficult to have shower and would have like the option of a cooked breakfast in the morning.
Review 14:Room was decorated well, clean plenty of pillows and bed was very comfortable
Review 15:Shower was hopeless and there was no anti-slip mat provided. The hotel had little understanding of food allergy (gluten) and as a result I had a main of a piece of cold processed ham with 2 tepid fried eggs on and was charged £7.95 for it. Continental breakfast had no meats or cheeses available
Review 16:Staff were pleasant and hotel clean
Review 17:Staff were really friendly and very helpful. Room was the 2 room suite, beds were comfortable, bathroom was clean and spacious and a little extra with the sofa in the middle. Pub was quaint, loved the open fire. Breakfast was fresh, we had the continental which was tastey! The lady at breakfast was very cherpy and couldn't do enough for us!
Review 18:The room was on a main road and was busy from 5am. The room was musty and dilapidated. There was no mirror in the bedroom and the room smelt musty. The booking said breakfast was included and then after having it the very unfriendly owner charged us a further £15 and when I challenged this was told the booking.com was only for a continental breakfast which was not made clear until after we had eaten! Overall I would not stay at this place again, very very poor
Review 19:The dinner was excellent and the bar staff very helpful and attentive
Review 20:The friendliness of all the team at the queens nothing was a problem great staff everything carried out with a smile.also a fab location albeit traffic a little heavy through the village at times narrow pavements meaning you have to be aware and on your toes.taking it that the beautiful village is a short cut to somewhere.we would certainly return to this charming village
Review 21:On the first night that we stayed there was karaoke in the pub below (with the speakers directly below our room) which was very, very loud. We had been driving for 5 and a half hours and just wanted to relax and have an early night as we were attending a wedding the next day. We expected to hear some noise as it is a pub after-all, but the awful noise from the microphone was unbearable so we had to ask for it to be turned down. We were told it was a one off event and they don't normally have karaoke but if you are planning to stay there and this isn't your idea of a relaxing night, it might be worth checking in advance before you book if they are planning to have it on. In all fairness they did turn it down, and it stopped at about 10.45pm. The girl who worked behind the bar was more than apologetic, however the owner didn't even apologise despite me having a conversation with her. I asked if we could perhaps move rooms however the owner made me feel like I was being a nuisance. The 'breakfast' was laughable. There was a table with a toaster on, and some bread (so you can make yourself some toast as it's obviously too much trouble for them to do it). There was also some manky looking apples, yoghurt, and croissants. We were surprised at the lack of cooked breakfast, as you expect a decent breakfast in a £85 a night establishment! The croissants were stale, so I made some toast for us.The next day we decided to go elsewhere and buy a decent breakfast prior to our 5 and a half our drive home - when checking out the girl said we could have a cooked breakfast there?!? I was a bit confused as it wasn't offered to us the first day, which I pointed out to her, and having looked at recent reviews on here, it seems other people only got the do-it-yourself one. If it was supposed to be 'continental' , it certainly didn't come near that!
Review 22:We stayed for two nights at the Queens. The room was very clean, and well decorated. The bed was very comfortable and we slept really well. We had an evening meal on the first night which was really good; I had the risotto and my husband had the steak - both were delicious. The chocolate mousse for dessert was also very good. Service at the bar and restaurant was excellent.
Review 23:the cook didn't turn up for breakfast, so this was understandably a bit of a problem, but the staff coped very well.
Review 24:Very friendly staff and comfortable traditional inn. Very good garden.
Review 25:The food was mediocre in the extreme. My starter (mussels) was stone cold and the fillet steak had been tenderised and was tasteless. Service at dinner was not good. A shame because the place overall is rather nice, if a tad shabby in the bar.
Review 26:Bathroom, while small, was nice and clean. Staff were friendly enough but could have been a bit more on the ball.
Review 27:Breakfast ordered the night before failed to appear on the first two mornings of our three night stay ! Loud music from the bar till 2 oclock on the first two nights ! Some staff where very unprofessional in attitude and behavior
Review 28:some staff tried really hard to make up for the lack of organisation from the management.Evening meals were quite good and served with enthusiasm by the young waiter and waitress . Nice beer garden .
Review 29:Noise from people getting to their rooms and banging doors. Noisy floorboards from people walking past at night makes you think there is someelse in the room! The side of the bath was quite high so very difficult to climb into if you were elderly and no had rail. It would be a good idea to have somewhere to hang towels whilst in the shower as the nearest hook was too far away to reach. Restaurant food and continental breakfast was pretty dire .We also noticed that other guests were leaving part of the meals. They were advertising for a new chef and the staff were trying to do their best. They were not busy at all but kept us waiting for over half an hour.
Review 30:Room decor in good order but few cobwebs in the corner of the bedroom. Comfortable bed with good clean white bed linen and towels. Spacious bathroom which was fairly new condition with shower over the bath. Staff were friendly.
Review 31:When we arrived it was madness, 1 young lad to book everyone in, serve drinks and take orders for meals plus serve them. I felt so sorry for him all he said all night was so sorry for the wait!! The old bar manager went home got changed and came back to help out!! Bteakfast was not much better either - very disappointing. Being kept awake at night by the noisy bar staff didn't help either
Review 32:The location of the hotel and the food that we had in the evening was good
Review 33:Only mirror in the room was in the bathroom, made it awkward for using hairdryer. Nice bathroom but shower head did have a mind of its own at times. Room we had was at the front of the building so got early morning call around 06:30 from traffic whizzing by in 20 mph zone!! It calmed down around 09:00.
Review 34:Located in a really lovely village, fab for country walks. Room was large and on the whole great with a couple minor niggles. Lovely food, well priced with good choice on the menu plus daily specials. Highly recommend Thai green curry on Tuesday curry night. Nice garden for when the weather is good. Found owners and all staff friendly and helpful. Recommend staying here and we would like to go back.
Review 35:Nothing
Review 36:We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The location is stunning and the pub and rooms were well decorated with the theme if queens. We had dinner there and the food was delicious and well priced.
Review 37:Checking out was complicated in so far as they relied on bits of paper stuck up on the wall. We were told what our bill was, we paid and left. However we returned because after discussion we didn't think we paid enough. We went back and they took some more off us. Very disorganised. If we hadn't been honest etc etc.
Review 38:We had been here before for lunch about 2 years ago and thought we'd go back and stay over. Lovely staff, very helpful. We were taken to our room and there were dirty towels on the floor left ny the cleaner However our room was very large with an en suite. The TV in the room was very small and a long distance from the bed. We ended up watching a movie on our I pad. The plugs were behind the chest of drawers which we had to pull out to access. There are no mirrors in the bedroom and a small one on the wall in the bathroom. Made drying my hair very interesting. The shower had a mind of its own as the fixings had been put on upside down. We both soaked the bathroom and ourselves unintentionally. You had to hold the shower head or it whizzed off. It was comical however. We had great starters of King prawns. I ordered sea bass and my to be husband ordered the lamb. His was delicious. Mine I left as it was dry and hard. I left pretty much everything on my plate. I did say about the sea bass but there was an apology and nothing else. So not great. Breakfast was ok however dished up on cold plates. This could be a right little gold mine. It needs modernisation throughout. The food needs an overhaul. I know that it changed hands due to one of the previous owners passing away. It really has gone down hill in my opinion.
Review 39:African Queen bathroom shopwer is useless as both pressure and volume are abysmally low. Cheap slated bed and matress requires replacing.
Review 40:Dinner & breakfast were good. Garden tables & benches nice in sunshine. Friendly staff
Review 41:service from waiter at breakfast needed a lot to be desired. Food was good though
Review 42:Staff in the bar extremely helpful . Food really good. Rooms very comfortable
Review 43:No bedside lights and shower didn't drain, no soap dish or anywhere to put soap, shampoo etc and the shower head just hung loose so had to be held all the time since the support bracket was broken. Hardly 'luxury'.
Review 44:Convenience for our visit. Nice separate sitting area and not noisy as some pubs can be.
Review 45:Breakfast was totally unprepared for ! Lack of bowls even ! Only Kellogs mini cereal boxes and limp white toast .... no fruit or marmalade .... a few croissants though. Very slow service both days ... everything had to be requested ! Bedrooms not refreshed but discount given for this .
Review 46:Very good evening supper for 20 wedding party guests .....apart from soggy veg ! Friendly efficient service .
Review 47:had to help wife out of shower/bath it is quite high and should have handle(s) and anti slip mat. no wardrobe in room just hooks on wall breakfast very variable and off fruit in bottom of bowl and dirty tables
Review 48:the position - walk out the hotel and have church, zig zag, lyth walk and G Whites wakes and another pub all less than 5 mins. Comfy bed friendly staff
Review 49:We had to wait a long time for lunch to appear, which made getting to the wedding in time very stressful. Breakfast, described as "Continental" was cereal and\or white toast - also a long time coming.
Review 50:A nice garden for lunch
Review 51:Close to South Downs National Park and the Surrey Hills Selborne is just in the middle of the lush green countryside south of London. Hampshire, Surrey and Kent with lots of gorgeous bluebells in spring are within easy reach of 20-30 minutes drive. We stayed in the "Queens Suite" and were lucky to have two bedrooms and a lovely bathroom all facing the Secret Garden of the pub.The beds were excellent and the staff very helpful.
Review 52:No Sky TV Small TV in room for size of room Breakfast was very poor (toast, coffee, fruit and juice) does not classify as a Continental Breakfast. Restaurant food was ok but nothing special. Overpriced
Review 53:Staff were helpful and the patrons friendly
Review 54:Poor lazy staff. More interested in reading the paper, texting, having a smoke. It's more like they were on holiday than running a business. If this is a sign of the new management ? GO ELSEWHERE.
Review 55:DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLACE. I did.
Review 56:No wardrobe. Inevitable noise and music from the bar beneath the room.
Review 57:Airy room with large and comfy bed plus good pillows. Huge bathroom, very light with a good shower, lots of fluffy towels and a good supply of toiletries. Good spec tea and coffee and free biscuits too.
Review 58:Over dinner, I was asked whether we would like a cooked or continental breakfast. I was surprised to hear that cooked was offered as had remembered someone mentioning a 'poor continental breakfast' on the site. We had 2 adult and 1 child's cooked and found £28 had been added to the bill, which marred an otherwise enjoyable stay. Had I been warned that cooked was extra I would not have ordered it.
Review 59:The staff were extremely welcoming and accomodating. Hotel is well located.
Review 60:Breakfast was very poor, Selection of drinks in the bar was dreadful as all of the lagers were unavailable. The meals served in the premises were poor in quality. Nobody was available when I needed to check out as it was 7.30 am. A service charge was taken from my credit card without my permission.
Review 61:Bathroom,
Review 62:Waited almost 1 hour for dinner which was a special occasion with no apology for the delay. gloomy bedroom with cobwebs on centre light fitting. Breakfast was poor quality and no choice.
Review 63:comfortable bed.
Review 64:found empty condom packet at side of bed, breakfast not adequate enough.
Review 65:the location opposite our reason for visit, the gilbert white museum.our meal on Friday evening was excellent.
Review 66:The quirky style of room, not to my taste, had circular playing cards stuck on the wall as all rooms themed about queens! Know it was late in season but when we came back to bar after meal in Chawton we found only 2 other people in bar, one appeared to work there but spent the whole time talking loudly to another man about his music knowledge whilst flicking through songs over the music system but never finishing any of them! Very annoying!! The continental breakfast was disappointing also after I read how charming and fun the hosts were on other reviews I was surprised how quiet and unwelcoming it felt.
Review 67:The location was great, very quiet village, looks like left untouched for hundreds of years. No street lamps so very dark and peaceful sleep. The bathroom was huge and nicely done.
Review 68:Rude staff who made you feel like an inconvienience to them. In the bararea one staff member constantly skipping songs half way through playingwhen we sat in front of the fire trying to enjoy a relaxing evening, with no consideration to the fact customers were present.
Review 69:Lovely evening meal in the restaurant it had a very warm and invitingatmosphere. Meal itself very good.
Review 70:This is an old building, with creaky floorboards in some area, which is beautiful, but the bedrooms could be better sound proofed
Review 71:Hospitality of Eric the landlord and all the team. Open fire, comfortable lounge. Lovely restaurant.
Review 72:Breakfast was adequate, but it would have been nice to have been offered a cooked breakfast, or at least have more options for the continental breakfast
Review 73:Good location, comfy bed and large bathroom
Review 74:Very poor water pressure in the shower.
Review 75:Erick was a great host! Guest lounge was very comfortable. Food was excellent in the evening and the continental breakfast was more than adequate, ham and cheese, croissant, toast, juice and tea or coffee. Plenty of hanging space and shelving for storing luggage.
Review 76:The shower in our room was practically unusable, it would only sit at half height and couldn't be taken off to use by hand, it was also cold or lukewarm at best. We resorted to having a bath instead. The breakfast, we were told was served from 7.30 so we arrived downstairs on the Day we were leaving as we had a long journey ahead and needed to get going, there was no one around so after waiting 10 minutes we left. It was only as we walked out we noticed breakfast is actually at 8am on a Sunday but we weren't informed when we requested 7.30. The breakfast was very mediocre anyway so it was no great loss. We chose to eat evening meal at the pub just down the road as it was less formal and suited us better
Review 77:The village is beautiful and peaceful and the pub has a really nice garden
Review 78:Food was ok, but the breakfast was only a slice of ham, cheese and piece of toast, no cereal or cooked breakfast. When your paying £85 a night you would expect at least a bacon roll.
Review 79:Room was nice, clean and comfy. Staff were friendly enough, nice setting in small village.
Review 80:Nothing to dislike
Review 81:A lovely little hotel in Selborne Village, which we found perfect for a romantic night away. When we stayed it wasn't busy and the team were very attentive; a good evening menu and service was more than satisfactory. We had a deluxe room with ample space and a comfy king bed offering a good nights sleep. We will definitely return.
Review 82:We thought it was expensive at £190 for 2 nights with only a continental breakfast. Staff asked us to adhere to a time for breakfast which was only continental and we had to ask for extra coffee - not many guests and having worked in a pub with rooms this service was poor - seemed like they wanted all guests eating at the same time for their own benefit. No 'boutique' style in the bedroom just old cheap furniture painted white. Decor very bland and carpet was cheap and looked dirty. Had to ask for lights in bathroom to be replace only one out of 4 working and TV was not working so had to have assistance with this.
Review 83:The bathroom was superb and very clean.
Review 84:matresses were a bit too soft. The breakfast is okay but an option for english would be good even at extra cost but I'd go again.
Review 85:location and general ambiance was really good. village location and excellent english pub nearby with good food and beer. Nice large garden
Review 86:The busy road which goes right past "The Queens".Even during the night it was fairly busy with very fast moving vehicles.
Review 87:The large bedroom and bathroom. The latter was well appointed and had plenty of fluffy white towels. The bed was very large and comfortable. We also enjoyed the continentel breakfast, but not,I'm afraid the meat and cheese, sorry. They were not to our taste! The young woman who served the meal was very pleasant and even managed to book us a taxi to go to Petersfield Station. This apparently is no mean feat on a Sunday in the Selborne area.....
Review 88:The area of Selborne is not good for mobile reception and WiFi connection. The through traffic at night kept my daughter awake.
Review 89:It had a lovely Secret Garden at the rear which was secluded and quiet. The bathroom was spacious and the bath deep. The staff were very helpful, accommodating and friendly. The dining room was delighttful.
Review 90:Being woken after midnight by a crowd of people who entered the bar below my room and partied for a couple of hours in the bar and garden. Other guests were also disturbed. Take ear plugs just in case. The room was dark - black & white and the bedside lampshades so dense that it was impossible to read by the light. Had to have the ceiling light on which was TOOO bright. Breakfast was just served without being asked if scrambled eggs & bacon were OK. Only option given was tea or coffee and toast - although the latter wasn't toasted - more warmed bread. Very typical version of "toast" found on the continent. The owners are French.
Review 91:the staff/owners were friendly and the room overlooked the garden. Great, I thought...it'll be quieter away from the main road... Room and bed comfortable and the bathroom quite stylish scrambled eggs were good
Review 92:I won't say I don't like it but somedays a cooked breakfast is preferable to a continental , but thats just me!
Review 93:My wife and I loved the food ,Erick and Marise were perfect hosts ,we love the French anyway. The setting was lovely thatch cottages all around. We will go back when we can.
Review 94:Poor shower in such a grand bathroom!!
Review 95:Like the theme of each bedroom and of course the appropriate decor. The location is perfect for visiting Jane Austen's country and Gilbert White's House & Gardens
Review 96:The only niggle was that the shower wasn't very powerful so it took me a little while to shower/wash my hair.
Review 97:The food and staff were lovely, the location was perfect for what we wanted and the room was great - especially the massive en-suite with gorgeous bath tub! Everything that we needed in the room was already there so no need to bother anybody to get anything.
Review 98:No hot water or heating for over 24 hours, despite repeated queries. Cooked breakfast provided when not requested, but redeemed on second occasion by provision of fresh fruit (although only after initial denial by French 'patron'). No hanging wardrobe space, in very black and white 'themed' decor.
Review 99:Staff were friendly and welcoming, and food was excellent. Perfect location, with lovely beer garden and direct access to good walking.
Review 100:Shower head was a bit loose so kept slipping down.
Review 101:Warm welcome and a lovely breakfast.
Review 102:Only continental breakfast included in room price.
Review 103:Very friendly staff. Delicious food
Review 104:Great atmosphere, good food and lovely location.
Review 105:Clean, comfy and good food.
Review 106:Friendly atmosphere, and staff. Bar area was very comfortable. The French lady manager certainly new her role, and was more than excellent.
Review 107:friendly, welcoming staff large room with lovely comfy bed delicious cooked breakfast
Review 108:Mattress Breakfast
Review 109:Hot shower
Review 110:the music being playing in the bar below (jazz) was very audible in my room (queen bee) and kept me awake
Review 111:the bed
Review 112:Everything expensive in this neck of the woods but would recommend no problem.
Review 113:Pretty much everything.
Review 114:Would have liked the option of a cooked breakfast.
Review 115:Lots of character with all mod cons in clean well presented rooms. Great food and friendly staff.
Review 116:Relaxed atmosphere, guest lounge. Excellent food, staff attentive but not intrusive.
Review 117:Wi fi was unreliable in our rooms. The food was ok but not great.
Review 118:Staff were great. We liked our attic rooms...lots of space for us in the suite.
Review 119:Felt very welcome and food in restaurant was better than I had expected.
Review 120:Only really stayed for one night.
Review 121:Great friendly staff. Fantastic location.
Review 122:Bathroom needs improving
Review 123:The standard double room was overpriced when compared to the next grade up. Baring in mind there was only a £5/£10 price difference between them.
Review 124:bedside lamp missing. cobwebs on windows. Easily sorted.
Review 125:pretty and comfortable bedroom, nice touches with towels in the bathroom.
Review 126:Bit noisy as wedding but very good besides
Review 127:Great staff thanks
Review 128:Bed wasn't that comfy and the room was very warm.
Review 129:Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Review 130:Stairs, had to use the stairs, lots of them.
Review 131:Pub good was good.
Review 132:More choice on breakfast
Review 133:Bar staff very welcoming
Review 134:nothing
Review 135:the rooms were spotless and very well decorated
Review 136:Being locked out after pub closed dedpite being told a key we had been given would give us access after hours!
Review 137:Comfortable bed
Review 138:Bed a little small for our liking
Review 139:Food very good
