Reviews for Alton House Hotel
Review 1:The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. I was given an upgrade whenI checked in so was very happy. Breakfast was fabulous with good quality ingredients. The toast was properly made and was both crisp and warm.
Review 2:Probably the worst mattress I have ever stayed on, it actually hurt to lie on it and I had sore ribs in the morning!!! The walls must be paper thin as well as I could hear the full conversation of the couple in the room next to mine, not ideal for anyone looking for an early start. Black stains on the carpet also, room definitely needs a makeover.
Review 3:Location was handy.
Review 4:Staff were very helpful when there was a plumbing problem in our room and moved us straight away. Only stayed one night, so did not get chance to use the facilities fully.
Review 5:Accommodation very over priced, Not enough milk for the tea, only 1 pack of biscuits. Broken towel rail with exposed electrical connections, ( very dangerous ) bathroom fan didn't work.
Review 6:Breakfast
Review 7:Nothing - location was ideal, room and facilities perfectly adequate. Perhaps too many flights of stairs to negotiate (due to building history) carrying cases etc
Review 8:The mattress - superb! Large car park, quiet room set at back of property
Review 9:Nothing.
Review 10:Our room was great, spacious and clean. The bed and temperature of the room were very comfortable. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and a pleasure to meet. We would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay again.
Review 11:Food is always a bit of a let down, and the coffee is cheap instant!
Review 12:Super friendly staff, very welcoming. Always see the same long term staff have been going now for 3-4 years on and off for training purposes. George, Agnes and Joseph in particular are lovely, and the housekeeping staff are all totally awesome, having also met a new member of staff she has also seemed to appear very settled and friendly.
Review 13:Cold room without central heating. Arrived to a little kettle with uht milk, and some Half eaten OPEN biscuits ?!?!? Shower was unusable - a dribble of cold water came out. Bed was hard and there was only a thin summer duvet on it in mid-winter! The sound proofing was non existent - could hear TVs and conversations of other guests. £85 not including breakfast - day light robbery. Avoid this place it is not good!!!
Review 14:Free parking
Review 15:Out side traffic you can here it passing but shut the window bit more better
Review 16:Like the bedroom looks nice and cosy staff are helpful wen I rang down stairs that got what I needed overall good and homely
Review 17:The staff were very friendly throughout the hotel and willing to help. Rooms were adequate with good shower. Little dated but very good value for money based on other hotels in the area. Good hot buffet breakfast. Bed comfortable
Review 18:No major issues, decoration a little dated in rooms, but overall very clean.
Review 19:Large bathroom with bath. Good amount of parking (providing you arrive early). Excellent breakfast service. Wifi speed and signal good.
Review 20:Breakfast was seriously under-staffed; the guy running things was outstanding but had too much to do.
Review 21:Booking in / out was simple; staff were great.
Review 22:Not a major issue, but heater in room didn't work. It wasn't that cold when I stayed, so didn't really matter.
Review 23:Brilliant staff, hotel very nice and welcoming
Review 24:My mother always said you can rate a Hotel by it's toilet paper! The toilet paper was terrible. I went out & bought some for own use. Also the heating did not seem to work with the controls. My friend & I turned the heating down at 7pm but the room was still too hot to sleep comfortably in at 11pm. Sleep was disturbed often in the night due to doors banging.
Review 25:The staff were friendly & helpful & ground floor room was fine for a person with disability, however a walk in shower rather than a shower within a bath would have been ideal.
Review 26:Noisy rain on the Velux window at night - can't be helped in bad weather.
Review 27:Friendly service, comfortable bed, welcoming and comfortable reception area, good parking, walking distance to restaurants and cafes in town of Alton.
Review 28:Very uncomfortable bed should have been thrown out years ago. Room very cold and only one heater worked. Broken bathroom air vent ment an extremely cold bathroom.Did not use shower for this reason. Very tatty decor and furnishings. Would have demanded another room if stay had been longer.
Review 29:Good breakfast and central location
Review 30:Nothing found in the short space of time we were there.
Review 31:Friendly staff and an open fire greeted us on arrival, we only stayed overnight to attend a party. Breakfast excellent also.
Review 32:Basic Customer Service from most staff. The breakfast staff barely spoke. The fire alarm in the morning was concerning and a casual explanation when I got down to say it was a shower. Concerned for Fire safety
Review 33:Hearty Breakfast
Review 34:The room was cold when i got there so i had to turn the heater on. There was no tv in the room either but the staff brought me one when i asked.
Review 35:The hotel was clean and tidy and the staff were very polite.
Review 36:My room was in need of an overhaul. The chairs had seen better days, and the shower didn't work properly.
Review 37:The staff are all polite, helpfull and friendly.
Review 38:We didn't see many smiles, so this reflects my score. There was a new door key system which seemed unfamiliar to staff so there were several extra trips to reception to get the key reset.
Review 39:Convenient location. The place seemed to have had a superficial lick of paint. A lot of it it still very tired.
Review 40:Accommodation a bit tired, light above bed did not work. Bedside cabinet broken and poorly repaired. Lack of little touches like biscuits or shower cap.
Review 41:Reception staff were helpful and welcoming. Good breakfast.
Review 42:Our shower didn't work and the staff offered us a different room 40 minutes before we had to vacate which was pointless and unhelpful. The staff were very hit and miss at serving waiting customers at breakfast. I have emailed them to complain and am still awaiting a response, not very good customer service!
Review 43:The location was perfect for the train station. The breakfast was very good quality.Parking onsite was a bonus.
Review 44:On the Saturday the chambermaid knocked to ask did we want housekeeping we of course said yes( why wouldnt we ?) we went out then on our return at 4pm our room and bathroom was clean but our beds were unmade the duvets where just thrown over, pillows and sheets not touched . Breakfast service a little chaotic
Review 45:central for where we needed to be, good quality food.
Review 46:my sister am I stayed at the hotel for closeness to my nephews and her eldest sons wedding at Bramdean. The hotel was handy clean and tidy the food was excellent, the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was also excellent, my sister and myself were born in Farnham Surrey not many miles away, the trip to Alton took us back to when we were children and Mum and Dad took us there (now Departed). Many thanks to the staff we will be back.
Review 47:Dated decor, had a cramped loft room, extremely hot, hardly any pressure in the shower, some of the staff at breakfast were miserable and absent minded. It is a shame as I have stayed at this hotel before and previously it was a really pleasent experience.
Review 48:Location was ideal for attending the Jalsa Salana.
Review 49:No bad experience. A lot of comments mention very hot bedrooms, and it is true they were surprisingly hot. But if you turn off the electric towel rail in the bathroom, I think that is the source.
Review 50:Good, helpful staff, spacious rooms, easy parking. Perfectly ok for our stopover, we would return if we needed another stopover in this region.
Review 51:Wine expensive. Queen size bed was s bit small and middle dipper. Shaver light and extractor broke. Overall pretty good
Review 52:Restaurant was a pleasant surprise food good. A cheaper alternative for Goodwood events tho' 50 mins away Shower was brilliant.
Review 53:All good thank you
Review 54:Best room in hotel value for space, nice hot large bath! Had problem needed to sort a shirt out went for breakfast 730 even tho breakfast was 8 they helped me out by bringing in early ! Got the wrong sized shirt changed in time for my sons wedding! Staff were very happy and helpful!
Review 55:The bedroom furniture is very utilitarian, not a slight bit of luxury which doesn't cost much done cleverly. Felt very sad and down at heel. Clever decorating would help.
Review 56:The staff were fantastic. Location was great. Breakfast was great
Review 57:Slight problem to us personally, the numerous different floor levels to room no 20
Review 58:The close proximity to the station, and the welcome froom the staff.
Review 59:I'd have liked real ales in the bar!!
Review 60:Excellent choice on the breakfast buffet, from continental to full english. We asked earlier if we could check in prior to 1400, and were allowed to check in as soon as we arrived around 13.15. Beds comfortable and "bouncy"! according to my Grandaughter!
Review 61:Room walls were a little thin and normal level conversations from adjacent rooms were intrusive - particularly at 4.00 a.m.! The breakfast room and food were good, albeit the bacon was grossly under cooked while other items were over done. The perspex protection screen for the hotplate was actually positioned such that it made the situation more dangerous when handling hot lids with the paper tissue provided.
Review 62:The hotel is pleasant and traditional in a good location for local points of interest e.g the Watercress Line and Jane Austen's house. The room was clean, spacious and well appointed with a very good bathroom.
Review 63:Very expensive for what is provided. The room was not ready when we arrived, no tea facilities or towels, although this was put right when asked. Room 40, constant extractor fan noise and lots of traffic noise.
Review 64:Room was dated and bathroom was mouldy and had awful lighting. Sound-proofing wasn't too good.
Review 65:That i could check-in late at night. It was convenient for the wedding i went to at Froyle Park. Plenty of parking.
Review 66:No soap in bathroom; no tissues; no toliet roll; TV did not work; shower had poor water pressure;
Review 67:spacious hotel with nice grounds and plenty of parking
Review 68:We stayed at AHH as we were attending a wedding near by, we found the bed was VERY well used, the walls were paper thin, all areas we found were generally run down and the shower was weak.
Review 69:The bed is higher at the 'feet' end than at the bed head, try it you can feel it when you lay down ! The mirror for shaving in the loo is placed for people under 5 feet tall. i sat on a chair to use it!
Review 70:staff helpfulness. Value for the money i paid.
Review 71:Service at breakfast very poor.miserable staff (with the exception of the young slim boy) .one member of staff ask if I wanted tea but never brought it,the toast I requested came totally burned.
Review 72:Bed was extremely comfortable
Review 73:Public areas very dated, frayed carpet on stairs for example. Just needs a makeover. For this reason, it was overpriced for the standard of accommodation. Walls particularly in the bathroom were dirty, too. Room 18.
Review 74:Bed was comfy.
Review 75:The staff were lovely. There was a beautiful garden. It was right next door to the train station (1 min walk). The girl on the front desk was very helpful, she allowed me to return the day after we had checked out(we were attending a wedding at a country residence) and printed my boarding passes
Review 76:Room not very clean, spider webs along ceiling mouldings and curtain tops. Small desk provided but no office chair. There was an occasional chair I tried to use but it didn't fit between desk and foot of the bed.
Review 77:Reception staff pleasant and helpful
Review 78:Decor
Review 79:Room was okay but for the price paid would of expected modern decor the artexing on the roof was falling off in little peices there was a few peices on the floor and when we woke up a few little peices in bed
Review 80:The price. Too expensive for a hotel like this in a town like this. My room was on the ground floor and the window was a door, so i had the feeling that anyone outside could see me, and i could not open the curtains. I could hear next room's tv.
Review 81:The location, so nearthe train station.
Review 82:Staff don't seem happy, no smiles. Not happy that the girls had to carry the luggage up three flights. Waitress ran off her feet while a male staff member just wandered around.
Review 83:Convenient location
Review 84:decor was dated and single bed and pillow were not to comfortable.
Review 85:The staff were excellent, very helpful. Breakfast was of a good variety and well cooked.
Review 86:Beds were very soft quite noisy rooms.
Review 87:Breakfasts were good.lovely location not a bad evening meal either. Happy to stop here or recommend to someone. Thanks
Review 88:The hotel was tired, my room had a comfy bed and good shower but the shower surround and window surrounds were poor and needed replacing or updating.
Review 89:The staff were friendly and helpful, very pleasant.
Review 90:Very Disappointed - we had moved to this Hotel after initial stay at local Premier Inn to enjoy a bit more luxury (at a significantly higher price!), but found worse than budget hotel: - Hotel and facilities run down - pool and tennis courts derelict, hotel threadbare. - Tiny TV in room (and bar) and no free WiFi - Room shabby with worn furniture and mould and damp around outside door - Food indifferent and no palatable vegetarian food for my son so ate out every night. - Bar staff amateurish - Shrill and loud talking to and serving their boyfriends at the bar while being inattentive to guests. - Bar Staff sat in bar area watching TV soap operas in guest seating area while Manager was drinking at the bar. - General Fawlty Towers air of nobody really knowing what they were doing!
Review 91:The hotel is run down and grubby. Bed was uncomfortable, pillow almost useless and shower curtain mouldy. Even the room service menu had something horrid over it. The top of the hot tap come off in my hands and the hairdryer was on the out.
Review 92:The staff were friendly and noted the room snags for housekeeping to address.
Review 93:Staff need to communicate better amongst themselves. And a fruit machine in the corner of the bar really isn't very luxury hotel, is it?
Review 94:Comfortable room in pleasant surroundings.
Review 95:Stain around the toilet on the floor wide band of 8cm of black mold Breakfast had run out of sausages and there was no clear path to buffet breakfast so had to squeeze around people
Review 96:size of the room
Review 97:No hot water available when we needed to shower pre wedding party. Walls are so thin you can hear people coming in and out and people chatting.
Review 98:Breakfast and location.
Review 99:As a single business guest arriving late in the day and wanting a good nights sleep, I suggest anybody thinking of staying at this hotel avoids rooms 22 & 21, they are sighted over the kitchen and the staff left the extraction fan on all night and kept me awake most of the night. They say you learn by experience, the following morning when paying my bill the receptionist asked if my stay was OK, I told her I did not sleep well due to a continuous fan noise, she said the kitchen staff are suppose to turn it off when they leave, at my expense, they did not! Guests expect a good nights sleep and it is the hotels job to make sure that happens, this hotel should try harder.
Review 100:Relaxing atmosphere!
Review 101:Couldn't give me breakfast one morning as I had to leave early for a golf competition and no one was there to do it, had to buy stuff from the supermarket, think I should have had a little of my money returned
Review 102:Everything in general
Review 103:Free wi-fi in rooms, should be a must in this day and age. No offer of toast top-up.
Review 104:Breakfast .Room 23 quiet at rear of Hotel. Plenty of free parking.
Review 105:The extractor fan didn't swith off after my husband took a shower, so we had to move rooms, except we had a to chase the staff to find us a room, if left to them we wouldn't have been moved. We have used the hotel over a number of years ans find after this visit it is looking very tired and unloved.
Review 106:Problems with the booking due to booking.com was sorted by the Manager with no fuss & with a positive outcome. Thank you very much for making the weekend enjoyable.
Review 107:Bath could use a little bleach and de-scaling. No free wifi or Ethernet in the room, which left me tethering to my mobile phone.
Review 108:Bed so comfortable I don't remember laying my head down. Lovely people at the restaurant and front desk, and even a kind night porter.
Review 109:Our room could have done with some additional sound proofing. Unfortunately the next room could be heard stirring their tea with the spoon in the morning.
Review 110:Friendly staff, good buffet breakfast and comfortable room with good facilities.
Review 111:Had four poster bed you could tell it had been repaired a few times you it was almost falling apart big gaps in the joints and a couple tie raps but the bed it's self was comfortable. I was also disappointed I thought we had free wifi I mean it's very common now not here however £5 for 1 hour or £10 for a day I think this a real rip off to be honest
Review 112:The hotel was lovely the staff where amazing went for valentines day weekend everyone was so sweet and helpful
Review 113:Really needs a refurb, faded carpets, 80's decor, frayed edges. Could be beautiful with some investment and TLC. Staff seem overstretched and a bit jobsworth.
Review 114:Hotel was very clean and location good
Review 115:Draft from single glazed window. Unnecessary removal of soap mid way through stay.
Review 116:Lovely room, good size, and useful laying space in bathroom for toiletries.
Review 117:Menu was just the same every night so not a lot of choice if u were staying any length of time. Hotel a bit tired looking needed a spruce up. Seats with torn fabric and woodwork chipped etc. Some dust and carpets needed a better clean.
Review 118:I found the atmosphere very friendly and the staff helped me with all my requests doing their best to help me with all I needed.
Review 119:The bed did not have enough support.
Review 120:Room was spacious and warm with a bath which I like. Room was warm enough and the hotel was next to church which was very convenient.
Review 121:Walls were paper thin and we were kept awake all night by the couple next door. We had a wedding the next morning so we weren't particularly happy.
Review 122:No hot water in bathroom No cold water in bathroom hand basin. main hotel very cold. curtains with holes in bedroom View from room is a flat roof covered in plastic sheeting. The whole hotel Needs a good clean and TLC
Review 123:Comfortable bed friendly staff
Review 124:My room was very loud and I had to be moved so I could get a nights sleep. the room was not cleaned or dressed the following day either.
Review 125:Location is good, staff friendly and good location.
Review 126:The breakfast let the hotel down. For the price they charged I would have expected an individual breakfast not food that was obviously put out under heating trays well before I ate it. Also, very poor choice. Had to ask twice for toast and then it arrived cold.
Review 127:The room was clean and light and airy and I liked the fact the the heater had an easy to use control
Review 128:Tge hotel looks past is best the room needed a clean and the walls could do with a paint. It needs updating and bringing into the 21st century.
Review 129:The location is excellent
Review 130:Hotel could do with a refurbishment, but this did not distract from our stay.
Review 131:Location ideal for our purposes in town. It was quiet in the room and the room was a good size. Breakfast was good and plentiful.
Review 132:We stayed in room 1 on the ground floor which was next to the public toilet, this we found a nuisance, at night when you were trying to sleep, the constant interruptions and having to listen to someone pee!, also being woken early in the morning when the cleaner was cleaning the toilet, not the best room in the hotel and really wouldnt reccommend this room!
Review 133:We always like the idea of being able to have a meal and drinks in the restaurant and not have the worry of whose driving, therefore the break is always that much more relaxing. Staff are always polite and very helpful. Ample parking.
Review 134:My only criticism is that the shower took over ten minutes to warm up in the morning which was a bit panicking as we had a wedding to get to. It did heat up in the end though.
Review 135:We only stayed for one night before attending a wedding close by. The hotel has a very pretty reception area and nice function rooms. Our room was very spacious and the staff were helpful and attentive.
Review 136:The shower wouldn't work properly, not enough water pressure I don't think
Review 137:Alton is a lovely place, hotel quite nice, breakfast was delicious and staff very friendly and chatty.
Review 138:mould on windows. some ceiling damage. Difficulty to bathe due to the slippery side and height of bath. Some very warn furniture, ie. varnish wearing off and suspicious movement of furniture showing it was well past its useful date. Overall, in the past it must have been an excellent place to stop but time has caught up.
Review 139:Staff service excellent
The Fine Print
