Reviews for The Weary Ploughman Inn
Review 1:Room was very clean and roomy. Towels excellent and plentiful. Bed comfortable. Cooked breakfast very good, usual cereal but also fresh pineapple which was a nice touch. Coffee really good which is always a plus . Staff very pleasant even though it was New Years Eve and they were very busy.
Review 2:the friendly welcoming staff on arrival. offering to help with luggage. we were offered a table for new year's eve, they had kept two tables for us, just in case
Review 3:It was a little inconvenient not being able check in before 5.30 p.m. We arrived at about 4.00 but the place was locked up with no-one in attendance, apparently.
Review 4:Polite and courteous staff, nothing was too much trouble. Evening meal was first class. (Not included in the price of the room) However the full English breakfast was well worth having. Didn't need to eat a thing till early evening. Thank you for a pleasant stay.
Review 5:We said we prefer a bath to a shower. The room allocated had a shower although there was another room with bath available. This was sorted out very quickly and the room we got was excellent.
Review 6:The restaurant could do with modernising slightly
Review 7:Everything about The Weary Ploughman is stunning, the room was beautifully decorated, the bed was excellent, the room was always warm and clean towels and drink making facilities topped up every day. Also the restaurant has a wide range of choice on the menu and always served to the highest standards. The staff are great, well mannered, friendly and couldn't do enough for us
Review 8:Location was great for the parts of Devon that we particularly wanted to visit. Accommodation was high standard and the restaurant was excellent. Great breakfast in the morning. Very quiet considering it was on a main road.
Review 9:The Wi-Fi had to keep being reconnected every hour.
Review 10:This place is far more than just an inn. It is a perfect small hotel/pub/restaurant. I was made to feel very welcome from the minute I walked in. The food in the restaurant is 1st class, bordering on Cordon Bleu. As for the bar, at last a hotel that doesn't think that lager is a beer. A choice of locally brewed real ale on draught. Very tasty and well kept.
Review 11:Can't access check in, until 5.30pm as pub closes in afternoon. Didn't notice this on booking. So arrived an hour too early. No big deal but worth noting if like us you missed it
Review 12:Clean, with modern decor. Own key and entrance door. Staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast choice excellent. Cooked to order fresh and well presented. Pub below, clean and tidy. Food looked great although we didn't eat there other than breakfast.
Review 13:Spacious comfortable room, with spotless user-friendly bathroom. Extremely good food and wine, very reasonably priced. Friendly and helpful staff. Access to station for wonderful vintage steam trains travelling between Paignton and Dartmouth ferry.
Review 14:Dirty stair carpet and dirty lampshades over the bed. Not being able to check in until 17 30
Review 15:Great location for coastal path walks and beside the station for the steam trains. Also near bus stop for public transport. Good food. Nice big room and bathroom
Review 16:Location - on busy road, therefore noisy. Not well signposted - drove passed. Accommodation - comfortable, but hardly luxury. Breakfast - well-cooked, but limited choice.
Review 17:The pub/restaurant was excellent. Evening meals were excellent. Staff were very efficient and friendly.
Review 18:The staff were very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to get our room ready when we arrived 4 hours too early! All the staff were fantastic. Lunch was excellent. There was so much choice for breakfast and it was all fresh and excellent once again. Room was lovely
Review 19:No bad experience
Review 20:Wonderful welcome - Jodie the manager is amazing and perfect at her job . She manages to make everyone feel that they matter to her Great breakfasts and evening meals
Review 21:Little bit difficult to find the right turn off the main road, could do with a clearer sign.
Review 22:Very nice room, big with good facilities. Lovely, warm welcome when we arrived. Good breakfast!
Review 23:Bathroom Shower could be improved, Room 4.
Review 24:The staff were excellent,The Weary Ploughman is so handy for the steam train and the bus service is just across the road. Will stay again sooner the better!
Review 25:We did not have any reason to complain. Leaving is a pain, but heyho, we can always go back.
Review 26:We have stayed here before the location is great, close to the bus stops for Brixham, Kingswear Paignton and Torquay. Easy to get to local NT properties.ddd Helpful staff good rooms and really good food
Review 27:I believe that the check in time will put people off. I think that they need to be more flexible. You can 't even contact them to find out if you could check in earlier.
Review 28:Lovely room and facilities. The restaurant food was good.
Review 29:Staff all very friendly. Beautifully furnished.warm and comfortable.the outside does not do the interior justice. Would definitely use this inn again.
Review 30:Was a little far to walk into town for us, but maybe not for someone fitter!
Review 31:Pleasant staff, very clean & great food. Right by the station for the steam train - brilliant.
Review 32:The staff were extremely pleasant & went out of their way to be helpful. Cannot complain about anything it was a lovely place & value for money. We will definitely come again. The staff, service, food, rooms, location all fantastic.
Review 33:A friendly and professionally run B&B. Excellent food, good wine list and real ale all at reasonable prices. Great location for seeing South Devon.
Review 34:Not sure what to call this place, not a pub, not a hotel.....location makes it difficult as on main road so more a stop over rather than a destination
Review 35:There was a leaky shower pipe Not enough light in the room We were meant to overlook the railway but only could see buses
Review 36:The spaciousness of the room plenty of wardrobe/drawer space
Review 37:The only tiny niggle was the wifi, as it's only for 30 minutes, you need to keep signing in.
Review 38:Absolutely beautiful place with lovely staff, couldn't have asked for more!
Review 39:Just returned from a very comfortable two night stay at this lovely hotel. Good freshly cooked breakfast with excellent service. Restaurant at hotel offers a wide choice of beautifully cooked food. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for all of the staff at this delightful place
Review 40:A wonderfully warm welcome. A cracking bar, and we had the bedroom that's shown on all the literature. Lovely! Very comfy bed, and a great shower too,
Review 41:Proximity to the steam railway station for our trip to Dartmouth. Staff were very helpful and were able to relocate us to another hotel for an unexpected 2nd night
Review 42:The check in time said between 5:30 till 9:30 which was a little annoying as we like to check in during the afternoon so we have somewhere to leave our stuff on holiday but it was ok. One of the members of staff in the morning was quite unwell with a nasty cough and I don't think she should have been working especially serving up the breakfast as it put us off our food.
Review 43:Fantastic spacious room with en suite with everything you need. We had a meal downstairs in the evening which was just LOVELY and very popular and busy but worth the wait for the table. Good location not in the hub of it but not far from all the major attractions, beach and coast. We would definitely stay again and recommend. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY! Probably good for families also!
Review 44:We were first greeted by Simon who proved to be an excellent member of staff with his helpful and friendly attitude. His extensive experience in the industry certainly shone through. The quality and presentation of the food was amazing.
Review 45:The cold breakfast buffet was very limited - fresh fruit was just slices of melon or grapes, and no juices other than orange. However, the cooked breakfasts made up for that, including salmon and eggs.
Review 46:Jodie and the team were very pleasant and did a great job catering for our special requirements including difficult diets. Our evening meals were very good, the room was enormous, and despite the road being busy during the day, it was quiet at night. It's conveniently situated for the steam railway and bus services to Greenway (NT), Brixham and Kingswear for Dartmouth, and for Coleton Fishacre (NT). We would stay again if in the area.
Review 47:We stayed for 8 days but menu only changed once per month which made eating of choice difficult later in the week. Only one type of soup but food nicely cooked and presented on hot plates.
Review 48:Superior room quality and facilities, quality of food, cleanliness, bathroom, ceiling fan in room and first class service and attendance by staff. No smoking anywhere in house, no pets, real peace and quiet. Will definitely come again.
Review 49:Our over sink bathroom light could not be turned off during our stay and we had a constant light all night long, this was not repaired until the end of our stay.
Review 50:All staff were very friendly and helpful. Ample parking. Room was very spacious with everything on hand. Restaurant food was better than average with a good choice. We would stay again and recommend to other people.
Review 51:Given the time we decided to get away meant a lot of places shut earlier than if it was peak summer so was limited with things to do around the hotel
Review 52:Location between brixham and Paignton
Review 53:Bread very poor considering there is a wonderful farm shop with home baked bread 2 mins away. This is my only complaint
Review 54:Staff were excellent. Could not do enough to help. Very comfortable.
Review 55:The hotel could offer more amenities in the bathroom i.e. Disposable toothbrush, disposable shaving kit etc! And the wifi didn't work in the rooms only in the bar.
Review 56:The facilities at the hotel were great, the rooms was very clean and confortable and also very big, the breakfast was also very good!
Review 57:A small item, but worth mentioning, I orderd a mushroom burger but it could not in any way be called a mushroom burger, it was a cooked mushroom in crusty bread.
Review 58:The bed was extremely comfortable with Egyptian cotton bedding. The food was excellent and well presented.
Review 59:I stayed in a superior room. It was quiet, dark, spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff were welcoming and the breakfast was nice. Everything I needed for a short stay near Brixham.
Review 60:We found nothing to dislike
Review 61:The staff were exemplary and went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. They allowed us to book in well before the official time as we were about to travel on the steam railway. Food in the evenings was true high quality gastropub and the breakfast was of a high quality.
Review 62:A little chilly in restaurant for breakfast but given we were the only ones eating maybe a bit much to heat the place just for us !!
Review 63:The shower was hot and powerful , the room nice and warm . Evening meal and breakfast superb .Cosy wood burner in bar area to enjoy some pre dinner drinks by !!
Review 64:Really nothing we did'nt like
Review 65:All the staff were very friendly. Food excellent, and being a real ale lover, what they had was very nice, if a little lacking in choice. The room was very spacious, and the shower, so powerful, it took the top layer of the skin off!!!!!
Review 66:We needed a place to stay after the wedding and this was a lovely place and the breakfast was fantastic and the staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 67:Location not the prettiest, however the food ie breakfasts, evening meals were good and no real noise from the depot next door or the main road.
Review 68:Staff helpful, polite and informative. Room adequate and clean.
Review 69:Slow service on evening meal - cooked breakfast on last morning.
Review 70:Excellent welcome - cleanliness - tea tray - Breakfast on mornings one and two - value for money
Review 71:The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable and we were unable to check in until 5.30. The Weary Ploughman's Inn closes between 3.00pm and 5.30 daily. So be warned you cannot check in between these hours.
Review 72:The food was excellent and all facilities very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 73:The "free" wi-fi is actually only free for 30 mins.
Review 74:Fantastic welcoming staff. Great reataurant with excellent choice and attentive knowledgeable staff. Excellent but not intrusive service. Comfy large bedroom which was well appointed. The appearence from the outside masks the excellence within.
Review 75:My wife found the bed uncomfortable, but she is more sensitive due to old back injury. No problems for me.
Review 76:Efficient and friendly check-in Helpful staff Good quality cooked breakfast ingredients
Review 77:We visited at the start of the autumn when the weather started to get colder and found that although the room was warm and comfortable, we could have done with an extra blanket or a thicker duvet for the bed.
Review 78:Having stayed there before, we found that the high standards of customer care continued in every respect. We were made very welcome. All the staff were cheerful and helpful . We will most certainly go back again.
Review 79:Too close to road. no outside gardens or recreation areas. The outside does not reflect the hard work that has gone into the refurbishment inside.
Review 80:Location to agatha christies and doyle cartes houses. Access to steam railway , to surrounding countryside and coast line and river dart
Review 81:Not much else in immediate vicinity of hotel, but this is only a minor thing.
Review 82:Practically evertything. Rooms where spacious, well appointed and very clean. With the hotel being only a short distance from Brixham and Paignton by car, this is an ideal l;ocation to stay. There is even a steam railway ststion right next door.
Review 83:Wifi coverage was patchy and afternoon opening would be good, but that's being picky
Review 84:The accommodation was superb, the food excellent - both quality & quantity could not be faulted, rarely have we come across such helpful, friendly staff - a real credit. Well done all round!
Review 85:Nothing whatso ever
Review 86:Large double room very comfortable every thing we needed.Great bathroom and shower all spotlessly clean Really home from home .Staff all friendly and helpfull would recommend to family and friends.
Review 87:view of bus yard
Review 88:handy for station steam train to dartmouth. food excellent. cheerful staff made you feel at home. nice homely atmosphere. room prices good for size of room. location good for all directions. jodie was really nice and looked after all our needs
Review 89:frontage was a little off putting not attractive although there are plans to add a conservatory coffe room at the front which will add more character. would have liked a little more choice of alternatives to cooked breakfast perhaps more museli and fruit choice. was a little shocked that if arrived after pub closing time to check in the afternoon it was locked until 5.30 was ok once checked in as given a key.
Review 90:room was big lovely completely seperate ensuite. staff friendly good location for train and busses. large car park lots of cooked breakfast. lovely entrance round side to hotel and place to sit.
Review 91:the bus sitting out side the building for 30 plus mins with the engine running and fumes smelling so much had to close the windows
Review 92:the restaurant food was very good
Review 93:Absolutely nothing!!
Review 94:The spacious room, comfy bed, superb food, hot breakfasts, accommodating staff, book early not many rooms. Will try hard to go again next year!
Review 95:The views from the window were not particularly attractive and the wifi very difficult to get on to, very slow and only free for the first half hour.
Review 96:The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable and the Inn is very well place to provide a base for investigating the local area. The breakfast was very good and the restaurant was reasonably priced.
Review 97:Rooms were pleasant and clean and quiet despite being next to the main road and close to railway. Staff were very attentive providing a flask of milk for my wife, not UHT. Breakfast vg. evening menu excellent, good wine and food
Review 98:We have no negative comments.
Review 99:The room was bright and comfortable and a large bright spotlessly clean bathroom. The shower was excellent. Fabulous water therapy! A good addition was a clock next to the bed so you can see the time . A small thing, I know, but when you wake up in the night you know how long you've got to sleep. Restaurant menu excellent and service to match. Jodie really looked after us. We stayed here about ten years ago and it was a little shabby to say the least. What a transformation. Would definitely return and recommend it to friends. Added bonus of the steam train outside the door. Loved it!
Review 100:As a working Pub, the access time for check in are based around opening hours. However a key is provided to enter outside of these times once checked in.
Review 101:Excellent food and staff. Good sized room. Stands on the outskirts, but easy access to Brixham and Dartmouth. Good value for money.
Review 102:Nothing really, the road outside was a bit busy and you could pick up some traffic noise early morning, but this wasn't a major issue, just one of those things.
Review 103:Very friendly and kind housekeeper who sorted out a great breakfast, taking account of my wife's challenging dietary requirements i.e. gluten and dairy free. We really appreciated her attention and concern to get things right for us.
Review 104:Absolutely nothing
Review 105:My wife & I booked a three night break at the last minute. Don't be put off by the outside, it's totally different inside. Our room (which overlooked the steam train station) was clean, spacious, very comfortable with everything we needed. The sound of the trains do not intrude, the first one stops around 10am whilst the last one is around 6pm (slightly later on a Wednesday) Like a previous reviewer we parked the car & travelled everywhere by bus or train. Breakfast (which is cooked to order) was delicious, although maybe a wider cold selection would make it even better. We "ate in" on our first night which, like their breakfasts, was very good indeed. We caught the bus into Brixham on the other two nights. The restricted check in time was not a problem, in fact knowing they did not open until 5.30pm encouraged us to stop off at more places on our journey. Once you've check in you get your own front door key, after which you can come & go as you please. However, as with most places, it is the (young) staff that make this place what it is. We would readily recommend the Weary Ploughman to anyone.
Review 106:Location not ideal, and exterior appearance a bit dull. Having said that, we were not troubled by road noise and ease of travel by bus / train is a bonus.
Review 107:Rooms, cleanliness, staff, quality of food - all excellent - exceeded our expectations.
Review 108:Limited checking in times Wine list could be better
Review 109:Very comfortable & clean room Excellent food esp. breakfast Efficient & friendly staff Nice dining area Large fan in bedroom ideal in hot weather
Review 110:The bed was really hard.
Review 111:The staff were very helpful and the food was excellent. We were ideally situated to board a steam locomotive for wonderful trip to Kingswear and then a harbour cruise from Dartmouth.
Review 112:We understand why the Inn does not open 'till 17.30 but that is a little late for first time arrivals.
Review 113:The welcome was warm and everything was fully explained. We had a twin room, which was very spacious, well-furnished and comfortable. The restaurant was excellent - very superior in style and menu - and we had a beautiful meal. Breakfast too was well organised and generous. The location - next to the steam railway to Greenway and the Kingswear Ferry to Dartmouth - was wonderful; there is scope for lots of outings. We will return. As it happens, we had considered staying at The Manor Inn, Galmpton, nearby but chose The Weary Ploughman: we're extremely glad we did as we had a sandwich at The Manor Inn before we left the area and found it a dingy, unfriendly set-up. We advise anyone wanting to stay in the area to go to The Weary Ploughman.
Review 114:We treated ourselves to an evening meal while we were there and it was excellent. From both the point of view of the food itself and the service we received.
Review 115:An observation only - check in times are limited to opening hours, which was not a problem for us as we arrived at lunch time, but could catch some travellers out.
Review 116:Great location, really convenient for Torbay and Dartmouth. Excellent position to enjoy steam Trains and River Cruises. Great food, both breakfast and dinner. Lovely room with excellent facilities. Really lovely staff - nothing was too much trouble.
Review 117:Hotel closed during afternoon, limiting check in / out.
Review 118:Good walks with excellent route guidance supplied by the hotel. Excellent bus service to Torbay area, bus stop 100 yards from front door. Helpful staff, good breakfast.
Review 119:The outside was somewhat drab but don't be put off. We would definitely return here if we were in Devon again.
Review 120:The hotel lived up to its previous excellent review. The facilities were of an excellent standard and staff consistently helpful, professional and friendly. Local transport links were brilliant, so no need to use the car.
Review 121:Warm welcome and comfortable room. Location perfect for local walks to Greenway Halt and Brixham.
Review 122:Everything was excellent.
Review 123:Staff very friendly and helpful Resturant excellent
Review 124:The service, friendliness and approachability of the staff, excellent meal, facilitated our plans, getting back and forth to a wedding venue.
Review 125:For me, the bed a little hard.
Review 126:Staff and food were amazing, room spacious and warm.
