Reviews for Le Vauban

Review 1:No tea / coffee making facilities in the room

Review 2:Having stayed here previously it was good to see that the whole place had had a 'facelift'. The room that we stayed in was a family room for 4 people with ample space and comfortable beds. With views over the town square and theatre famous for Les Miserable, the location couldn't be better. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. I would recommend Le Vauban to anyone

Review 3:I wonder if I stayed in the same Hotel as the other reviewers? I requested a twin room, but we were given a very small double bed, I think that 2 small children would have had difficulty sleeping in it let alone 2 adults, combined with the fact that I could feel all the springs of the mattress and that the bedside table was actually pressing against the side of the mattress made for the second worst nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel - the worst was next to a church where the clock chimed the quarter, half and hour throughout the night! The breakfast was poor, both the coffee and orange drink were tasteless. Thank goodness for Starbucks at the Tunnel! Wifi didn't work in the room nor in the bar. The host was silent and rather unwelcoming.

Review 4:It is in a good location with plenty of free parking right outside. Good bathroom and shower.

Review 5:This is a lovely hotel with welcoming staff & owners. Good location with wonderful views of the main square. Great rooms, comfortable beds & fabulous bathrooms. Nice bar & restaurant too!

Review 6:Rooms need tea and coffee making facilities the same as in every other hotel that one stays at.

Review 7:Hotel appears to be getting better every time we go there with better fittings etc. The Grohe shower fitting was especially nice to use. The beds are excellent

Review 8:Bathroom has slight room for improvement, but functional for an overnight stop.

Review 9:Fantastic location. Owner very friendly, room very clean, and well provided for.

Review 10:Arriving at the hotel after the designated time of 17.30 to find no staff and having to phone - an abrupt 'use this code xxxxx' and I had to ask again 'What room?' - 'room 9' - 'What about the key?' - 'the door's open'. We saw nobody until we left the following morning when they tried to charge a rate for a higher class room - when I pointed out the rate quoted to me by Booking.com was 2€ below the lowest listed room and 7€ below what they were trying to charge, they grudgingly revised the bill. We didn't take breakfast - which at 10€ was expensive though it looked good.

Review 11:Good room, clean and comfortable

Review 12:Toilet virtually impossible to sit on unless under 12 years of age Price of wine more then 6 fold that of a supermarket Breakfast was a joke - with no chef available to cook the supposed hot food. The owner seemed to have foggotten how to treat customers

Review 13:Restaurant FOOD was super & excellent value for money - wine prices were exorbitant. Super shower Staff were very helpful

Review 14:The breakfast was ok but basic. Dairy food was not covered and there were flies on the cheese and ham which was very off putting.

Review 15:The location on the square was very good with convenient parking.

Review 16:Lovely little hotel with a fantastic host (Sylvie) who really went out of her way for us. Just a one night stay that we booked last minute as we couldn't find accommodation in Le Touquet but the hotel was clean with comfortable rooms and represented great value for money. The setting is wonderful with views over the village square and they have a restaurant/bar on site which did a great buffet breakfast for just 10 euros (6 for the kids) would thoroughly recommend to anyone!

Review 17:The hotel is situated right in the town square. The evening meal was excellent and the staff very friendly. Although we are a mature couple we did have our 11 year old grandson with us and he also enjoyed everything about the hotel.

Review 18:We ate in the restaurant at night and that was very good. The older man does appreciate French being spoken, so make every effort to do so! Easy parking and the market setting up was quiet and didn't happen until after 8am.

Review 19:Not applicable

Review 20:We felt we were staying in a hotel giving good quality food, drink and service at very reasonable prices with very helpful and friendly staff

Review 21:Great location for our overnight stop. Travelled with our four children ages 21 - 11. Showers excellent. Lovely view overlooking the square. Plan to go back and stay longer.

Review 22:Nothing to dislike.

Review 23:Great location, Montreuil sur Mer is a really interesting town. The hotel was clean, comfortable and provided a really good breakfast. We also eat in the hotel restaurant, the food and service was excellent. Really good value for money, we would definitely stay again.

Review 24:This is a nice, welcoming hotel with a pleasant bar (with comfortable seats outside in good weather). Rooms and bathrooms are clean and well laid out. I will probably stay there again in the near future.

Review 25:All was very good. Would have liked to have been able to make tea and coffee in the room.

Review 26:Great location, great value for money, excellent breakfast. The 'hosts' really provided a great stay.

Review 27:We only stayed one night! Would have love to have stayed longer.

Review 28:Staff were so friendly and helpful. Rooms comfortable and spacious. Food excellent. Will definitely return and would recommend to anyone a super place to stay.

Review 29:While the hotel is fine, the disappointment of having to pay 20 euros for 2 breakfasts, although my wife was unwell and was unable to eat hers but was not allowed to cancel it, left us with a feeling of dissatisfaction with the whole experience.

Review 30:WiFi unreliable.

Review 31:Situation on the square in Montreuil is excellent. Well appointed room, good dinner, excellent breakfast, good value . Will definitely stay here again.

Review 32:Having looked at the photos on Booking.com and the hotel website, we opted for a triple room (with sofa), nice decoration etc. The room offered was not as per the photos and although it may have been decorated, it was not refurbished to the standard of the photos on the website. We opted for a double room which was nicer than the one offered, but charged for the triple. So, not all the rooms are as per the photos. However, nice stay and good location.

Review 33:The location is perfect, the bed was great, the other facilities in the room were very good, though the carpet could probably do with replacing. We only wanted a room and the deal offered was perfect for us. The staff were friendly and helpful. What more do you want in a 2 star hotel?

Review 34:It may get a bit noisy in the square on Sat a.m. when there is a market

Review 35:Very quiet accommodation set on lovely large square. very clean and peaceful and great ramparts to walk around

Review 36:Hotel is in an excellent position with ample parking in the square just outside.Breakfast was good and we would have liked to try the restaurant but unfortunately it was closed for the two nights we stayed there. Very comfortable bed.

Review 37:Slight smell from drains but everything else was excellent.

Review 38:Location is excellent overlooking the town square, with plenty of dining/drinking choices.

Review 39:Le Vauban is a perfect stay to take in the surroundings of this pretty small town. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the staff were very friendly and polite. Nothing too much trouble. Perfect room over the market square enabling an opportunity to watch the comings and goings of this lovely town. A perfect weekend break.

Review 40:Slightly cramped room even in family room but ok for one night Wouldn't stay much longer than a couple of nights here

Review 41:Location is great, just in corner of main square! Price is very good

Review 42:it's probably just me but I don't like waterproof mattress covers! but everything else was perfect

Review 43:The location was excellent and the owners were so welcoming and friendly

Review 44:We were recommended to Le Vauban by friends who stay regularly when travelling to and from SW France. Rooms appear freshly decorated, facilities are very good and the location is perfect with lots to do and see for an overnight stop. We both enjoyed our meals in the restaurant which was good value.

Review 45:The Wifi wasn't working

Review 46:Great location right on the square. The hotel seems to be updated since last year with a good quality shower fitting - at leaast in this room.

Review 47:It would be nice to have coffee and tea making facilities in the room.

Review 48:Good central location, plenty of free parking outside the hotel. Clean, spacious, comfortable room.

Review 49:Helpfulness of staff, friendliness cleanliness of hotel. When we booked we only booked one night but later decided to book another night. This meant that we would have to move rooms for the second night. When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome by the owners who said we could stay in the room we had booked for the second night meaning that we would not have to move. Had dinner there on second night good simple food.

Review 50:The rooms are basic, but perfectly fine for the low room rate charged.

Review 51:The owners were welcoming, accommodating and a pleasure to meet. The hotel is above a resturaunt which was really nice, and situated in a great central location

Review 52:The bathroom/shower was clean but very basic

Review 53:Croissants and pain au chocolat. 5 beds in a room for us and the kids was a novelty and was cheaper than 2 rooms

Review 54:Warm welcome, lovely room, very clean & comfortable bed, great location & superb value, a trusted favourite. Recommend the brasserie, for all home cooked food & delicious! Will be returning again very soon.

Review 55:Not much to dislike, evening meal was only adequate, but see above re breakfast!

Review 56:Clean, trad family hotel south of Calais, amazing brit-friendly breakfast spread

Review 57:The owners were wonderful, very friendly and great hospitality. We were there on New Year's Day and they were the only restaurant in town that was open. The food was excellent and atmosphere was cozy, and freindly. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 58:Arrived at 1630hrs but despite booking confirmation stating reception was open from 1400hrs the hotel was in darkness. Sign on door said reception from 1730hrs and had to ring at 1740hrs to eventually gain access. Could be more welcoming on what was a wet and dark winter afternoon. Room cleanliness could have been better.

Review 59:Location was good, beds were clean and comfortable, and we appreciated flexibility with time of breakfast. Morning staff very friendly, and hotel should be commended for being open (as most in town were not).

Review 60:Very well located. Friendly owners. Hotel full of character - although those with mobility difficulties should ask owner to help them to their rooms as the stairs are typical of a period building. Food brilliant.

Review 61:The only negative is no refreshments in the room and the breakfast coffee was cold.

Review 62:I don't understand why people have left negative comments.....it is a very good two star hotel with four star food and very comfortable beds.

Review 63:A few things needed fixing - the door handle on the inside of the en suite door was loose! The shower was rather feeble and you couldn't stand unerneath it. The bed was extremely hard and rather low, but it didn't stop us getting a good night's sleep. Our confirmation email suggested we could get into the room from 2 pm, but at 2.30 no one was there and a notice stated access was from 5.30! It would have been good to have been notified in advance of a change of arrangements.

Review 64:The view over the square is great. Having a table and chairs by the window was a nice feature. Good breakfast, if a little expensive. We enjoyed a pleasant meal one evening.

Review 65:There was no heating at all and it was the end of Oct.

Review 66:The hotel was overlooking the square which was free parking right outside. Had a good meal on the premises.

Review 67:We did not have meals here only breakfast which was fine, although may have liked something hot - but accept it is a Continental breakfast. My wifi would not work but my cousin was fine - so that could be the phone. I was surprised there was no kettle in the room, but as all young people it was not a problem for us.

Review 68:A 2star hotel offering a superb service. The hosts are superb and greeted us with a huge Gallic smile. An excellent location over-looking the main square close to the restaurants and bars with only 1 minute to the city walls. Were able to park in the car outside in the square for free. The little town is wonderful and the walls are outstanding although not for young kids as no secondary wall or rail. We ate at La Pause Gourmande and would reccomend - especially the Fish soup. Would i stay again? We are planning at another visit in the Spring.

Review 69:As perhaps expected in a 2 star hotel, the bed and shower were not the best quality. Tea / coffee making facilities or bottled water were not available - perhaps this is usual in France but I think is expected by UK travellers even at 2 Stars. The owners are clearly trying hard to please clients and have a good 2 Star hotel, I did however find their quest for better feedback on Booking.com somewhat intrusive.

Review 70:Unbeatable location. Hotel was spotlessly clean. The bedding was excellent quality Free WiFi. Breakfast was ample. The family room was huge and extremely good value.

Review 71:Ideal location to explore Montreuil. The Owners of the hotel were very welcoming and keen to ensure our stay was perfect; this was achieved. The room was comfortable and all meals (lunches, dinners and breakfasts) were very good. Le Vauban warrants more than the 2 star rating currently held. Free and extensive car parking next to hotel.

Review 72:The owner could not have cared if you were there or not. Locked thru door to bar forcing residents to go out to street and round to the bar!

Review 73:Location, not a great deal of choice in town unless paying extra so for the money it was fine.

Review 74:Rather let down by dimmly lit stairs and corridors. Room 5 excellent position but very poor quality flat-pack furniture. TV very high on wall and could only be viewed lying back in bed. Eu10 for breakfast a little on the high side

Review 75:Excellent location on main market square, very friendly staff and good food.

Review 76:No lift was very difficult as the stairs are narrow and also the bannister.

Review 77:The general welcoming atmosphere, the friendly and courteous staff and the food. The breakfast was copious and the evening meal delicious and very good value.

Review 78:Rather cramped w.c. (though in fairness I am on the large side). Landlord's sense of humour (though I liked it) could be misunderstood by some UK visitors. Lack of lift.

Review 79:Large room with high ceiling and good view of the square. Pleasant, friendly staff and bar, excellent breakfast . Spotlessly clean throughout. Ample free parking opposite the door and good location right on the main square.

Review 80:Locked out of bar area, have to go out to get in! Felt like the owner couldn't care less whether you were there or not, no help with stairs and luggage,

Review 81:On the square, perfect location

Review 82:One of the beds had a loose leg

Review 83:The location was great, right on the main square which was the best thing about the hotel. The only staff member we met was friendly too. The room itself was quite basic but met our needs fine as it was just for a one night stay to split up a journey.

Review 84:The shower did not work. The cold water came out burning hot, potentially dangerous. The patron obviously knew, but did not offer any refund. Otherwise, it was comfortable and pleasant.

Review 85:The food here is excellent, traditional, and reasonably priced; the wine likewise. The splendid ramparts are within a very short walk at the back.

Review 86:Hair dryer wouldn't turn on

Review 87:Very comfortable and clean hotel very central and easy to find , quiet and lovely owner . Great night sleep with lovely soft bed and pillows !

Review 88:The Wi Fi only worked in the small hours of the morning. We couldn't use the heating - I tried to turn on the radiators and nothing happened. I know it was mid summer but it was cold.

Review 89:It was good to be in the heart of Montreuil. The room was plenty big enough with a lovely view. The beds were made up nicely and it was useful to have a table and chairs where we could eat and play a board game. The wife was lovely, I only spoke to her the morning we left, but she was very friendly and hospitable.

Review 90:Brilliant location. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Lovely family rooms with crisp white sheets. Relaxed atmosphere would certainly visit again and have already recommended it to friends and family. Great!

Review 91:The single bed was wet when my son got into it, the shower in the adjoining bathroom had leaked and all his bedding had soaked it up. So we spent half an hour late at night trying to sort this. All we were eventually given was a spare bottom sheet, no new quilt, the member of staff disappeared leaving my son with a wet quilt to sleep under and a bed we had to make ourselves. There wasn't anyone we could speak to about it in the morning other than the (lovely) lady who was serving breakfasts, who said the owners aren't around at that time of day. The rooms and hallway could do with a bit of TLC, and I don't think we've ever stayed in a hotel that doesn't have any tea making facilities (even the really cheap ones!)

Review 92:Location, easy to park, good size rooms and comfy beds

Review 93:Bathroom was rather small and dated.

Review 94:The Hotel is in an excellent location right on the town square. There is plenty of free public parking right outside. We arranged for an extra bed in the family room and there was plenty of room for 4 adults for an overnight stay. We didn't have breakfast as I thought it was a bit overpriced. There are plenty of shops very close by and a boulangerie next door

Review 95:Room a little bit tired around the edges Being charged full EUR10 breakfast for our 2 year old

Review 96:Excellent location Free parking Spacious room Breakfast (EUR10 extra)

Review 97:The town was great, plenty of restaraunts to choose from but we choose to eat at the hotel and food here was good. Owners friendly and breakfast was good value.

Review 98:This place isn't for everyone. If you like a nice new shiny bathroom etc then I wouldn't suggest it. The plumbing is loud and the drains didn't drain that well. The family room faces the main square and if there is an event it's quite loud...our kids slept through it though! And one last thing...I didn't get the rate that I booked on booking.com. On the morning that we left my youngest daughter was ill and my husband paid. He didn't know what I'd booked for and paid the higher rate for the family room. We originally booked the triple with an extra bed. We were placed in the family room without being told it would be more. It's not clear to me whether we paid more or that was the price of the extra bed. At any rate because my little one was ill and because our hosts were busy with breakfast I didn't try to resolve it then and there. Otherwise the service we received when trying to arrange a second night was great and I don't want to give the impression that we were unhappy. Just a few things that weren't 'perfect'.

Review 99:We are a family of four living in Czech Republic and Le Vauban was to be a one night stopover on our way home. We realized we would arrive later than expected and called ahead (twice) to let them know. Both times we were told it would be no problem and that they would wait for us. When we arrived our room was so comfy and cozy we all slept well despite a late theatre performance across the street. The beds were comfortable, the room was big enough for our family and the little hotel and its restaurant are a welcome change from big chains with no personality. Although we didn't experience the restaurant we could see that other guests were enjoying themselves and the atmosphere was lovely. I would stay here again. The town is so much more interesting than I realized and it would have been nice to spend another night. Oh and when we did try to book a second night (at the last minute) we were very kindly told they were full...minutes later through some kind of magic there was a knock at our door and we were told we could stay. The owners are very kind people.

Review 100:Breakfast arrangement, staff understanding of foreign language. TV remote control didn't work. Wi-fi most of the time didn't work in the room. Rubbish bin too small for family room.

Review 101:Service, room, location, parking

Review 102:Shower so small couldn't wash armpits or feet!! Room very small and low quality furniture. Wardrobe was a 30cm rail screwed from the cupboard to the wall. Bed made back ache. Breakfast was terrible for 10€, coffee disgusting. Even though a 2 star hotel, not value for money.

Review 103:Rooms got very hot, party going on in the square that finished at 4am. Then the market started preparing from 5am. No sleep

Review 104:Good location, friendly staff and helpful.

Review 105:Wifi wasn't too good upstairs, rooms 4 and 6. Maybe other bedrooms better. Perfect in bar.

Review 106:Location, location, location! Evening meal excellent, friendly manager

Review 107:I liked everything about this hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. The hotel is situated right on the market square and the view of the town from our bedroom window was great. Lovely views of this pretty French town. Easy free parking in the square just outside the hotel was also very helpful. I will definitely visit Montreuil again and will definitely stay at Le Vaubon.

Review 108:Small 'double' room and tiny shower - almost impossible for my husband to negotiate himself in and out...

Review 109:Nice location, comfortable (if small) bed

Review 110:The upstairs bedrooms did smell of food.

Review 111:The owner and his wife were very friendly and she spoke very good English.

Review 112:Fantastic position on the Square, easy parking, nice big shower, very pleasant owners, comfortable bed. No complaints

Review 113:Recently refurbished rooms

Review 114:2nd floor room but no lift

Review 115:Good town centre location good food

Review 116:Charming people with great sense of humour.

Review 117:Fab family run hotel in square

Review 118:Wifi was unreliable

Review 119:Excellent breakfast - willingness to speak English!

Review 120:Good

Review 121:Bathroom

Review 122:Not a problem for us, but there was no lift to upper floors

Review 123:Location on the town square was fantastic. Free parking and great food
