Reviews for Château De Pray
Review 1:Our room was nothing special in decoration, very plain for the price. The bed was comfortable and fine. The bathroom had several malfunctioning items (toilet and sink) and a musty, unpleasant smell.
Review 2:The main building was nice, as was the staff. Unfortunately, we were not in the main building, but rather the annex. The restaurant was outstanding.
Review 3:bed not very comfortable.
Review 4:Beautiful buildings. Loved the setting. Staff extremely helpful. Excellent elegant dinner on patio - was a highlight of our trip.
Review 5:I stayed one night with my husband and four year old son. The staff are very welcoming and happy to play with our son. We ate at the fantastic restaurant, on the lawn over looking the valley. The chef was able to adapt the fine dinning menu for a four year old. The pool and gardens are beautiful. Our son was blown away by this stunning 'castle'.
Review 6:A beautiful building and grounds together with welcoming staff and great food made this a spontaneous and special stop on the way home from a camping trip. We were really impressed with how accommodating the head waiter was with our children (10 and 7 years) in adapting the menu. Didn't want to leave.
Review 7:8 euros extra for ham with (already expensive) continental breakfast is a rip off. Restaurant food is excellent but portions could be bigger. Defective fire alarm kept us awake on first night. Several defective sun umbrellas at swimming pool
Review 8:Location and room comfort
Review 9:The whole restaurant experience was outstanding but we felt that the cost was possible a little over the top.
Review 10:Food, excellent and the staff were helpful and always accessable.
Review 11:Our room had terrible Wifi connection and the room didn't have air conditioning but a stand alone fan - for an upmarket property it should have aircon.
Review 12:Lovely quiet location just outside Amboise. Lovely decorated rooms, and outstanding restaurant.
Review 13:I felt that the "service" of the wait staff at the Michelin rated resturant was lacking. We expressed that our table was too low and was still balanced on quark stubs. Unacceptable for the type of place and the price that went along with it. The food excellent, the service not so much.
Review 14:The staff were wonderful in helping us find the best room and even when there were issues with our choice of the Pavillion, the staff resolved the problem accordingly.
Review 15:The room was large and comfortable with nice antique furniture including four poster bef. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Suggested good restaurants in Amboise as their one was not open the nights we stayed.
Review 16:I didnt like that we only had time to stay one night. The loire valley is lovely. I would have loved to have dined at the restaurant more than once. Just not enough time.
Review 17:We stayed in the main building. The decor of our room was beautiful.?room#7. we were travelling with our 20 year old. It was comfortable for the 3 of us. There are views from the building of the lovely gardens, we were on the equivalent of the 2nd floor american. I am not sure if there was an elevator, probably not as we took the stairs. The restaurant here is likely the best restaurant we have had the pleasure of eating in. I think both the accommodations and the food are excellent value for the money. We certainly spent 4x the amount in Paris at a 3 star michelin restaurant and it doesnt come close to the food experience we had here. The room made you feel like the priveledged class, not another stay at a chain hotel. The room was quiet. You really must have a car to stay here. It is easy to find off the main road..
Review 18:Do not attempt to check in one minute earlier than the 4.00pm checkin time. We were weary from travelling and wanted to relax and enjoy the experience of staying in a chateau only to be turned away when we arrived just after 3. No offer to wait and stay in the bar/restaurant for a drink just or any sort of customer service just a tort" no, check in is at 4 you need to come back" from a shout faced admin lady, out a downer on the experience. So you pay a lot of Euro to only have limited time available to you. also no chance to have dinner as the restaurant was fully booked, I would have thought some tables would have been offered to staying paying guests as a priority. We could not use the bar/salon either as a private function was on, all in all a bit disappointing.
Review 19:Room was nice and bed comfy
Review 20:The service was excellent. The host was charming. The room was beautifull and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. The restaurant, L'Orangerie, was fabulous.
Review 21:We had a lovely room with a huge four poster bed, antique desk and comfy chairs. Our daughter and her partner had a room in one of the turrets, smaller but still comfortable. The manager gave us a great deal for the room combination. Their restaurant was one of the best we went to in France, and we went to quite a few very good ones. Breakfast was good too, in a delightful old fashioned dining room.
Review 22:A little outside of town, but that is why it is so relaxing.
Review 23:Perfect mix of elegant modern rooms and historic chateaux. Staff very helpful with fine english skills. very relaxing property.
Review 24:The accommodation and grounds were superb. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The cuisine, staff and the atmosphere in the restaurant was amazing.
Review 25:Stayed with wife and 2 young kids. Everybody was very happy. The chateau has wonderful medieval ambience. The restaurant dinner was absolutely awesome, one of best we've had in France!
Review 26:We went there before Christmas and stayed there for 3 nights and had dinner there on the first night, the total cost of the stay included dinner is close to 900 euro (we didn't order an expensive bottle of wine), so in my opinion it was a bit pricey. Especially when it was so cold that we couldn't spend any time outdoor which I think if we have had stayed during summer we would enjoy it a lot more. Also coming from London we are spoiled with the quality of restaurant in relation to the price, so having a dinner of over 400 euro I would expected a lot more. Don't get my wrong, the dinner was great and the services was perfect, we were just not very impressive with the food for the money we paid for. Also for the price we paid, we would expect to have breakfast included, however if we wanted breakfast it would be 16.50 euro per person. We also paid extra for a garden view, however the window is so small that it didn't make much of difference. Again, if we have had gone there in summer, we would have had a drink at the garden and enjoyed our stay a lot more.
Review 27:The location is great. We had a garden view room which was specious and the bed was very comfortable. The Wifi was free but the signal was weak at times. The restaurant had a very good wine menu and the wine connoisseur was very good in explaining/describing the wine we ordered.
Review 28:Stair access only which was a little difficult with heavy suitcases.
Review 29:Our interconnecting rooms were lovely with a view over the garden and thank you for the unexpected upgrade! As we arrived on New Year's Day, we organised to eat in the restaurant and had a lovely and special meal, also with a dedicated menu for the children. Jerome was excellent on reception and offered soup in our room when I was unwell, as well as recommending a local salon de the in Amboise for my wife to take the children for treats. Well-situated for all the chateaux of the Loire, Amboise, Tours and the Leonardo da Vinci attractions.
Review 30:Breakfast was very expensive for what it was. 16.5 euros for coffee, pastrys and juice is a lot for a family of four!
Review 31:This is a classy hotel with spacious rooms and proper luxury bathrooms - unlike most other hotels we have stayed in France.
Review 32:Early check-out - does it have to be 11:00 AM?!?!?!?!?
Review 33:friendly staff - thank you Jerome you made possible the incredible hot air balloon ride - the prompt service - cognac in 3 minutes, tea in 5....
Review 34:Dogs allowed in what is supposed to be a high-end starred restaurant. Shouldn't happen!
Review 35:Superb location, well appointed and stunning food although service a little slow.
Review 36:No complaints.
Review 37:The buildings were beautiful and decorated appropriately for the time. The grounds were lovely. The room was a bit small but very lovely. I would have love to spend more time at the chateau just enjoying the solitude and beauty.
Review 38:The restaurant was closed for one of the four nights of our stay - but we had been alerted to this in advance and made an alternative arrangement.
Review 39:Very professional management - skilled and welcoming. Tranquility of the location. Very comfortable room. Excellent cuisine.
Review 40:Since this is an original Chateau, just remember there is no elevator to the rooms.
Review 41:Excellent Château. Well located (just 2-3 km from Amboise town) with comfortable rooms and a nice swimming pool (where you can really swim!). Internet functions very well too! This is really the place to be if you wish to have a chateau experience while in the Loire Valley. Excellent value for the money.
Review 42:No possibility to have dinner in the restaurant even if you have a room. (we were informed by the staff that Amboise has a lot of touristic restaurants: this is not what we expected) Small sleeping room, small bathroom. Hight of the room at the 3rd bed was +/- 1.5 m ... Must be very warm in summer...
Review 43:Very nice castle; Beautifull location (and orientation), very nice swimming pool and seats; Breakfast is up to the expected level; very quiet environment;
Review 44:The outer buildings were good sized for a family but lacked the charm of the chateau itself.
Review 45:Historic small chateau with a Michelin starred restaurant, well located in Amboise with easy access to the major sites. The staff were very accommodating and it was nice to have a pool on property.
Review 46:It was very helpful and we had a lovely day visiting the Château and the whole of Leonardo da Vinci. If you fantasize staying in the Château this is perfect
Review 47:No screens on room windows. Had to open them to cool down the room, which resulted in an invasion of little flying bugs.
Review 48:Beautiful grounds, welcoming staff, nicely appointed room, awesome atmosphere, delicious breakfast.
Review 49:We spent and excellent 2 days in the Loire Valley using Chateau De Pray as our base. It is a beautiful Chateau with lovely grounds and a pool. Very relaxing. Dinner at the Chateau was excellent, easily the best of our meals among our week in France. Would seriously consider returning for another Loire centered weekend in the future.
Review 50:Very comfortable and charming. My daughter loved it; thought it was fancy.
Review 51:Situation, restaurant
Review 52:No elevetor
Review 53:Bed it s so confortable
Review 54:Even though expensive, we liked everything.
Review 55:A very nice chateau experience in the heart of the Loire Valley. Good hotel, excelent gourmet restaurant
Review 56:The restraunt was superb
Review 57:a little pricey
Review 58:great staff
Review 59:Beautiful place and setting
Review 60:breakfast was quite expensive for what was offered.
Review 61:Everything else.
Review 62:The room was slightly musty as there was no air conditioning, otherwise a wonderful location
Review 63:Fantastic restaurant, although rather expensive.
Review 64:Great experience. Poor wi-fi and no ac.
Review 65:Beautiful view! Close to Clos du Davinci and the wine country. Very accommodating to your needs.
Review 66:Wi-fi was spotty at times. Not a big issue.
Review 67:The property is gorgeous, the owner and staff welcoming.
Review 68:My wife said this was the most comfortable bed she had ever slept in - and she is not prone to exaggeration!
Review 69:Staff very friendly and helpful Clean modern facilities in a beautiful historic setting Great Mattress
Review 70:The size of the room and the staff was not very polite.
Review 71:The food in the restaurant.
Review 72:Staff are friendly and food is superb
Review 73:We booked a small double room which was lovely but TINY! We had no room for our 2 small suitcases and could barely walk around the miniature bed. The toilet was in what had previously been a small cupboard In the bedroom so felt very strange! Not a first date rendezvous!
Review 74:Beautiful building and grounds, exceptional food in the restaurant. Stunning furnishings and decor! Gorgeous chateau
Review 75:Our dinner lasted almost 4 hours and by the end we were completely exhausted from the endless waiting. There is the requisite 15 minutes wait, which I can understand for the main course, or even appetizer, but to wait for an hour before each course's arrival... That's a real torture, especially if there are kids.
Review 76:The chateau has been completely renovated. It feels like an exclusive and upscale hotel. The restaurant is clearly the star of the show here. It seems to be very popular as they are often fully booked, expecially on the weekend.
Review 77:one couldnt make a cup of tea in the toom - they discouraged any kind of food in the room. Which is OK but not great with teenagers.
Review 78:The place the staff and the location was lovely +++
Review 79:Our room had an awful, strong disgusting sewage smell to it and despite efforts to eradicate the scent of wet, smelly dog stink, it didn't clear. If the hotel would have had another superior room available we would have moved. It was really disgusting and interfered with our ability to give this hotel a good rating. The breakfast was too expensive and not worth the value. 16,50euros per person/day with limited selection of protein, no meats, and mostly just unhealthy "european continental" carbs. They charge 7euros/person extra for cooked eggs & omelets.
Review 80:The hotel's location is perfect for visiting local wineries and castles. The fine dining restaurant was superb. Being close to downtown Amboise is really nice for finding lunch/dinner options more within a reasonable price range. The view from our room was lovely, the grounds are lovely. The size of the superior room is perfect. If we would have had a different room our stay would have been much better.
Review 81:This is my valuable experience to there because the hotel is verynice. Have tradition style that I never been before. I spend only 1day to there. The staff there is friendly. And they suggest me atraditional France restaurant for us. It is delicious and valuable. But unluckly that the day I living there , the restaurant is closed ,so can have my dinner at Chateau de pray. Will suggest to other if youhave a private car.
Review 82:Only 1 toilet/bathroom. We had to take turn...
Review 83:The staffs were very friendly and helpful. I had problem with my rented vehicle. The staff helped made several phone calls to connect to Avis. Nice room with mazzanine that housed 4 of us beautifully.
Review 84:The castle is quite simply beautiful... we were upgraded to a room that would suit us better, at no extra cost. We loved staying there, the facilities were great, the ambiance out of this world. We didn't have breakfast or dinner, we wanted to experience other places...
Review 85:Nothing
Review 86:We loved everything-- location, room, food and the staff wasexceptional. When the restaurant was closed they recommended greatplaces to eat --will definetly return.
Review 87:Nothing to do with the chateau but if you do walk into Amboise, bear in mind that for some sections there is no proper pavement or defined walking track, so need to be aware of traffic on the road. Otherwise you can take the back roads away from the river.
Review 88:An historic chateau overlooking the Loire River, with a short walk into the small town of Amboise, noted for the impressive former home of the French Royal Court and the Manor Clos Lucé, final home of Leonardo da Vinci. Delicious gourmet delights from the kitchen - this was my second visit and doubtless there will be a third!
Review 89:The gardens were sadly neglected. I realize we were there in mid-October, but the grass could have been mowed an d the garden beds could have been cleaned. It seemed rather dark and the stairway seemed too dark for navigating up and down without falling.
Review 90:The historical aspects of the chateau - the original floorings, the original tapestries.
Review 91:We booked a room in the annex but were upgraded to the chateau I would have preferred the room we booked we arrived around 4 pm and I expect our room was given to others who arrived earlier
Review 92:For a one off staying in a chateau in the Loire Valley it was good
Review 93:May be too isolated for some people for longer stay
Review 94:Good launch location for Loire Valley with car. Quiet beautiful setting with interesting walled garden and some grounds for walking about
Review 95:Plumbing slightly noisy.
Review 96:The style and character, the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, the location, the building, the furnishings, the menu, the food and wine. Delivering an ambiance of quiet unfussy understated luxury and relaxation.
Review 97:The room lacked a proper shower and other basic fittings - bedside lights, dressing table mirror, double bed made from twins just pushed together not zipped. The breakfast was poor & over-priced.
Review 98:The chateau, gardens and pool were beautiful
Review 99:Exceptional quality of accommodation, attentiveness of staff, and amazing inventiveness of evening food. Succeeds in conveying what life in a dreamlike chateau might be.
Review 100:Our bedroom was overrun with ants on our second night. To be fair we just ignored them, and only mentioned it the following day when we checked out. They told us that we should have mentioned it and they would have sorted it out.
Review 101:Beautiful Hotel with lovely gardens. We ate in the restaurant and the food was superb! The best meal we have ever had! The wine was well priced. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We loved our stay here and would love to return again one day.
Review 102:Room very small, dark. Nowhere to place luggage. Did not have the feel to stay in a Chateau.
Review 103:Restaurant offered exquisite food, good service and lovely location.
Review 104:It is too strong to say I didn't like the room as it was nice but it didn't have the wow factor that the rest of the hotel has or as shown in the photos.
Review 105:This is very lovely Chateau with very friendly and welcoming staff. We enjoyed the outdoor pool, drinks on the terrace and breakfast in the orangery was lovely. Best of all was the fantastic meal we had in the restaurant, make sure you don't miss out on the best cheese board we have ever seen!
Review 106:They close the back garden and the parking in the evening so if you arrive late there's little to do but leave your car outside. Also having a glass of wine in the evening in the garden is out of discussion.
Review 107:The hotel looks excellent.
Review 108:The pool was not open although it was the first week of June. The staff did not seem to think that this should be an issue and just shrugged their shoulders when we asked about it.
Review 109:The Internet connection to my room was poor and the provider mechanisms slowed down connection to the Times to the point where I could not get access. The management should consider changing provider and installing signal boosters.
Review 110:I loved the grounds, my room, the dinner, the wines, the delightful staff and the setting. I last stayed there about 20 years ago and it was as enjoyable on this occasion as it was on the last. It was also very good value. I would happily have stayed longer if my schedule permitted.
Review 111:Bathtub but no shower. Parking difficult at night unless you are there early for dinner. Better for couples than families.
Review 112:Beautiful location. Excellent value. Friendly English speaking staff.
Review 113:House-keeping not attentive at all. Pavillon rooms cold.
Review 114:Very good restaurant. Very nice surrounding and hotel building- a real chateau. Very good location.
Review 115:Beautiful, old, well-maintained chateau that made my family feel like royalty when we stayed. My husband and I were travelling with our 22 year old daughter and stayed in one of the family rooms with a loft that had two twin beds. We spent two nights and truly enjoyed our stay. Accomodations were very clean and the staff very professional. The grounds are beautiful. Well valued. We enjoyed an excellent gourmet meal in the chateau restaurant one evening. We asked for a late check-out on the morning of departure and were granted one.
Review 116:This was a wonderful holiday experience for us, a lovely chateau in thebeautiful, peaceful countryside. We loved our room, its decor &views of the chateau grounds & countryside. The food in therestaurant was magnificent, and the staff were excellent, very helpful. The cheeses & wines of France are very new to us so on our requestthe staff recommended exceptionally well our wines & cheeses for ourmeal. We would love to come back to Chateau de Pray
Review 117:There's no refrigerator and boling pot in the room.
Review 118:The place is very nice, safe and comfort. Location is perfect. The room is very superb for family.
Review 119:Price ok considering the hotel's circumstances (location, number rooms) but wouldnt consider great value.
Review 120:Had our reception dinner here 10 years ago. Back with 7 year old daughter. Staff just as nice and accomodating. It isnt a new, luxuriant hotel, but the charm makes up. We didnt, but the adjacent stable looks to make a horse ride avail.
Review 121:It was a great stay.
Review 122:We checked in late, around 10 pm. Very friendly staff helped us bring our luggage to our room, then we went to the bar to have a drink. Clean, well appointed room with super comfortable bed and superb bedding. We slept great in our room. We didn't eat breakfast because we had a busy day planned. My husband did have a wonderful cappuccino in the neat dining area while I was getting ready.
Review 123:Kudos to the staff! Travelling with young children, one is alwaysapprehensive about how they might behave in a new environment. The staffwere very friendly and accommodating that our children really enjoyedtheir first Michelin-starred dining experience. We would definitelyrecommend this hotel and restaurant to our family and friends travellingto the Loire.
Review 124:a sense of restaurant over hotel, garden too hard to get to.
Review 125:nice chateau
Review 126:Lovely heritage property with a marvelously helpful, courteous staff. Great food and realxing atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
The Fine Print
