Reviews for Olde House by Marston's Inns
Review 1:Bed was rather bouncy and not very wide - not so comfortable for a double Very boring view out of the window of the car park and neighbouring houses
Review 2:We didn't have any noise in the room, despite it being New Year's Eve and a very loud disco going on downstairs
Review 3:Rooms where away from the main pub and on the evening of our stay there was a Christmas party going on but at no point did this disturb us. Room very comfortable and very good Breakfast.
Review 4:No wifi in the room as had been advertised. Had to ask for iron and when it came ironing board was awful.
Review 5:Room was pleasant and staff were helpful. Decent breakfast.
Review 6:Rooms ok but need a little attention to maintenance (bathroom flooring coming away and toilet roll holder coming off the wall, bath plug broken).
Review 7:Great staff - and great breakfast
Review 8:The heating didn't work no soap in both containers in bathroom asked for runney eggs got hard no Sunday dinner was told it was a hour wait when we went back just over a hour they had run out of Sunday dinners.
Review 9:Nothing to dislike
Review 10:Staff were great, friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was fantastic. Accomodation was clean and a very comfortable bed. Five mins from town centre.
Review 11:The stairs were a challenge for my old knees but I did not request ground floor when I booked.
Review 12:Staff were delightful and couldn't do enough for us. Rooms were more than adequate and there was a range of food to suit most needs. Would always use the Old House again.
Review 13:Used as overnight stop whilst visiting Barrow Hill. Very convenient location, within easy walking distance of other pubs and eating places. We ate here in the evening and had a very nice "pub grub" meal. Good size bedroom, friendly staff.
Review 14:Pillows on bed not comfortable, sleeping with one not high enough, 2 pillows neck aching. Also would have liked fruit or grapefruit for breakfast.
Review 15:Friendly staff, clean and comfortable.
Review 16:Nothing to complain about.
Review 17:The staff were excellent, all of them. Helpful, friendly and very polite. Charlotte deserves a special mention as she sorted out a problem for me with the minimum of fuss. Marstons have a gem there. As a manager myself I would love to have her on my team. an absolute diamond.
Review 18:Nothing but you do need a car as it's not in centre of town
Review 19:Always stay here for my trips to Chesterfield. It's always quiet, comfy beds, great night sleep and a nice hotel. I wouldn't stay anywhere else
Review 20:only 2 teabags in room. We requested more but none arrived. Room v warm.
Review 21:friendly staff, clean and spacious room and very welcoming after a long day travelling
Review 22:Restaurant menu is limited for choice. i.e. no fresh vegetables (the Merrie Garden Marston Inn on the Isle of Wight has a chicken rosterie with fresh vegetables). Too much fried food leaves to upsets and indigestion.
Review 23:Friendly staff. Ease of access. Reasonable prices
Review 24:The fire exit door at the end of the corridor wasn't alarmed and ai found it open at one point. Anyone could have walked in withut using the main entrance.
Review 25:We were greeted in a timely amd friendly manner. We had been given a ground floor room as they knew I had young children with me. The room was immaculate.
Review 26:Had to wait a long time for food to be made in evening. Apparently an event was going on. An hour wait is too long! Coffee in morning was cold.
Review 27:Hotel was east to find. Check in was easy. Pub with good food.
Review 28:Lovely, friendly greeting from staff on arrival. Very clean, comfortable bedroom. Bathroom had nice bath/shower with lots of very hot water. Good choice for breakfast which was cooked to order and served on a nice hot plate. Ideal base for touring Peak District! Thoroughly recommend it.
Review 29:A little noisy in the bar, but as the bar area is so large we found a quiet-ish corner.
Review 30:Clean, modern bedroom. A very good night's sleep. It was a Mexican food evening when we stayed. Very reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly and host helpful.
Review 31:The window handle was broken, just managed to close the window as there was a party of Fri night - very noisy till late. Bed not that comfortable. Breakfast was served from 8am and although we were there together with many others travellers at 8am the service was delayed with just one staff serving us all. Good but very small portions.
Review 32:Parking was a bit difficult and we had to wait for over an hour to park up next to the hotel. I could have lef the car in the pub car par but with driving a car worth over £70,000.00 I couldn't take the risk.
Review 33:A nice old pub attached which was great.
Review 34:Stay clear of the fish and chips if you expect Cod or Haddock. Best nip down the road to the Woodside pub for their fish and chips, named as Cod or Haddock.
Review 35:Everything but the fish and chips LOL
Review 36:Flush in cistern not adequate enough.....removed nothing. Had to use toilets in pub.
Review 37:Space to move around in a large room, Although on ground floor, good soundproofing.
Review 38:Nothing
Review 39:Everything, all the staff were so friendly and helpful, room was lovely and comfortable, it had everything we needed. Breakfast was excellent, pub food was also excellent and inexpensive.
Review 40:The staff were so friendly and helpful. We arrived mid evening when the bar was busy serving food but we were dealt with by a lovely lady quickly and without fuss.
Review 41:The food was appalling! Frozen gooey gluup for dinner followed by a breakfast containing reminents of the night before. Truly dismal. Stay there and EAT OUT!!!!
Review 42:Cleanliness, staff were really friendly and accommodating !
Review 43:Checking in was a nightmare music too loud in pub which was reception. My son was in a swimming competition in shefield and had to be there early morning poolside by 7.30. We came onto car park to find a car blocking us in and couldn't move it. Frantically trying to find the owner to move it. After 45 minutes a member of staff came out and it was there car blocking us the guests in. Not acceptable considering there were well over 50 parking spaces empty 50 metres away spoilt out whole trip and ruined my sons competition preparation. Guests be aware. Out of hours your on your own there. They don't care.
Review 44:Breakfast the best ever had. Thankyou
Review 45:LEAVING SO SOON.
Review 46:friendly, willing to help people, able to help with unexpected problem with ease and understanding. Terri and colleagues were brilliant.
Review 47:We had been attending a wedding at nearby Hassop Hall. We were unable to check in until nearly midnight but this was no problem. Staff were very helpful and the 2 rooms were excellent. Breakfast & service very good many thanks
Review 48:Reception and bar service not supported by enough staff- delays in reception and bar servicer as a result. Food, breakfast average.
Review 49:Double room and facilities excellent
Review 50:Had to leave the hotel for an evening meal. After showing up in the restaurant at 7.30pm finding a table, noting the number and queuing at the till for 10 minutes, I was told there was at least another 45 mins wait for a meal. It was then I left.
Review 51:Could do with some shelves in bathroom to put stuff on if staying for more than one night, other than this no complaints.
Review 52:Large room with small sofa. Good base for exploring area. Plentiful breakfast Somewhere to go in the evening.
Review 53:The décor in the room was quite dated. The bath drain was blocked and could have done with being cleared. The shower screen on the bath leaked so the floor got very wet. Some of the wet room flooring was coming apart and didn't look very nice.
Review 54:The breakfast was good and the bed was comfortable
Review 55:Nothing bad, but decor a bit dated, could do with a refresh in the public rooms. Bedroom clean and tidy
Review 56:Staff very helpful, knowledgeable and ready to go the extra mile - Matt, Tracy and Julie especially
Review 57:The only place I stay when up this way. Lovely staff, comfortable bed, great breakfast. Good location for Matlock, Bakewell, Chatsworth as well as Chesterfield. Love it!!
Review 58:Room got very hot and couldn't open window much.
Review 59:Very friendly staff, lovely room and nice and quiet. Essential when travelling with a 9 week old baby.
Review 60:Friendly and very helpful staff. Bedroom in attached block was quiet, even with a wedding in the function room. Convenient location for Sheffield, Chesterfield, Chatsworth and the Peak District National Park.
Review 61:The room was very large, airy and comfortable but there was little storage space. Given the size of the room it would be easy to add a wardrobe and chest of drawers or similar. It was a little noisy until the early hours because of a wedding party but I guess you can get that anywhere. Not the most picturesque of locations but very convenient for exploring the Eastern Peak District.
Review 62:Very helpful, friendly staff. Very comfortable bed. Good bathroom. Excellent breakfast. Nice lunch on arrival.
Review 63:There were wedding parties on both nights we were there and the restaurant and bar were insufficiently staffed to deal with the numbers. Breakfast service was very slow.
Review 64:It was good value with easy parking and convenient for Peak District for walking. The room was a good size and comfortable.
Review 65:minor but slightly annoying.no light above desk mirror and in bathroom getting up close for make-up and especially shaving down light hit the back of the head and left the face in shade.
Review 66:near bus route to town large spacious room with desk and sofa
Review 67:The wi-fi. Literally the only thing that didn't far exceed our expectations. We couldn't get a signal lying at the head of the bed: The foot of the bed was the only place where we could get a consistent signal. But if they buy a couple wi-fi signal boosters and place them throughout the facility, this place will be UNBEATABLE. (And anyway, what are you using wi-fi for if you're spending all day exploring the city and the Chatsworth House?)
Review 68:The staff? Incredibly friendly and helpful. The room? Beautiful, comfy, and well-furnished. The food? AMAZING. Delicious, very well-priced food at the in-house pub/restaurant, including a COMPLIMENTARY HOT BREAKFAST. And I don't mean the kind of hot breakfast where you grab the scattered leavings of cheap "bacon" from a battered warming dish: I mean the kind of hot breakfast where they bring you a menu, you order whatever you want (or even "everything", in the words of our server), and then they cook it and bring it out to you. All included in the room price.
Review 69:There was no shampoo provided.
Review 70:We had difficulty finding 4 rooms for 7 adults in the area for a family wedding but this hotel came up trumps Plus a very kind housekeeper helped me out with providing some shampoo as I hadn't brought any, expecting it to be provided. She also asked if there was anything else we needed, very impressed!
Review 71:Everything we needed - large and comfortable room, good choice on the menu and friendly staff. The area was quiet and there was adequate off street parking. Wifi was also good.
Review 72:Quite a long walk to the town centre (if you want to see the sights without taking the car)
Review 73:It was just what we wanted, and the rooms were surprisingly quiet for a busy pub
Review 74:Stayed on a hot night and small bedroom window opens very little, so no ventilation. Note, no air con. Also, some noise from cellar cooling fans may be heard if sleeping with window open, in a room facing car park - not a problem for rooms at the back!
Review 75:Price and service. Evening meal in restaurant was very good; we had 2 excellent curries with drinks for a good price. In addition to standard menu, each night offers a themed deal and we landed on curry night.
Review 76:Seemed understaffed in the evenings as on one occasion we had to wait 50 mins for meal as pub was reallu busy and what staff there were they just could not cope and dirty glasses and plates were stacked everywhere
Review 77:Food we had was really good - no complaints. Friendly staff.
Review 78:Great location for what we wanted. Plenty of room both in the pub and ensuite room. The food was typical 'pub grub' and was excellent. Staff were really pleasant and helpful. Definitely would stay again.
Review 79:A dirty towel was left in the bathroom from the last occupants
Review 80:The room was clean and tidy. Breakfast was cooked to order so was fresh and hot. Evening meal was also good
Review 81:We originally booked because breakfast was served from 7am, when we arrived it had been changed to 8am we had to be at a meeting in Chesterfield at 8.30am and was subsequently late.
Review 82:The location and the evening meal were great. The rooms were very comfortable and a bath was a big plus
Review 83:It's only a small criticism and that would be to place the live bands in a slightly more suitable area. They seemed to be in a small area to be heard really well. But as we haven't seen any other bands we can't comment on the quality of the entertainment usually provided.
Review 84:The staff were very friendly, the accommodation nice and clean and comfortable. The location was close enough for visiting surrounding areas of the Peak District. To be able to have a meal without booking was quite a relief, it meant not having to worry how long we were out.
Review 85:Broken toilet seat. Long wait for food but they did give us some nibbles while we waited also a 20% voucher of food on our next visit with an apology.
Review 86:It was comfortable and a decent place to stay and a good base for exploring the area.
Review 87:Pillows filled with too firm foam, and the bottom sheet wasn't tucked. Room needed some tlc like refitting tie back hook, topping up the hospitality tray, lobby light not working and the bath needed re caulking to get ride of the brown mould. WiFi virtually non existent !
Review 88:Friendly cheerful staff, with good size rooms and bathroom. Easy access to the pub restaurant that served standard pub grub at a reasonable price. Plenty of off road parking.
Review 89:Wi fi was slow.
Review 90:Accommodation at back of nice pub. Pub served typical pub food and had a couple of real ales. We sleep well. Room a generous size. No complaints about breakfast. At £65 a night, it was value for money.
Review 91:WiFi not good in room but excellent in bar and corridor area
Review 92:Friendly staff good location bus service every 10 mins to the town although not right on doorstep but within walking distance - good size rooms - comfortable bed - good breakfast. Would stay again if in area.
Review 93:Couldn't get the heating to work - but it was a mild night!
Review 94:Was concerned when checking in as they had live music booked. Thought I would be kept up - but I didn't hear a thing even though I was in the room closest to the bar
Review 95:None
Review 96:We were traveling through England, and wanted to spend 1day in the Peak District. We arrived here the night before, and had a wonderful breakfast before heading out for the day. The restaurant is excellent. Great atmosphere, friendly warm staff, fantastic value for the money.if we ever visit the UK we will most definitely book this hotel again, and stay longer. It was such a great experience, it was the best part of trip from Scotland to Paris.
Review 97:Our room was clean, comfortable and with all of the facilities expected. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Both breakfast and the evening meal that we had in the pub were substantial. Drinks were very reasonably priced. My daughter was very pleased that Quorn vegetarian sausages were served.
Review 98:Pillows were incredibly firm for my liking but I am fussy about my pillows. Did no detract from anything else about the place and would stay there again if visiting Peak District in future.
Review 99:Really friendly staff Clean rooms, and bar & restaurant area etc Very reasonably priced food, good basic pub grub
Review 100:They wanted to give us a room with no shower when they had a perfectly suitable room with a working shower available! We didn't understand the principle behind that. But we were happy with the room we finally received.
Review 101:The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was tasty and plenty. We accidentally left an expensive piece of jewellery behind when we left and only realised a couple of hours later, but the lady on reception very kindly found it and put it away safely until our return.
Review 102:Wifi not always great and not much in the way of evening entertainment in the bar as it's not exclusively hotel users
Review 103:Loved the staff so friendly breakfast was superb! Rooms were very homely and spatious
Review 104:No bad experiences here, but the WiFi signal was a bit weak in our room, fine for emails Etc. though.
Review 105:The staff were pleasant and accommodating, and the room was comfortable and spacious, and was kept clean. A very pleasant stay.
Review 106:The location was good if you wanted to go in to Chesterfield or drive out to visit other places of interest. Rooms were far enough away from the main area that you did not hear the noise from the bar or disco that was on Friday evening
Review 107:The comfort of the beds and the quality of the pillows.
Review 108:Breakfast and cleanliness of rooms. Location for our needs on this occasion was good. Quiet location after the pub had closed.
Review 109:Our only real problem was the breakfast, which was ok and in my opinion was the only thing which wasnt top notch. The bacon whilst cooked was not really cooked enough or our liking and the fried egg did not have a skin on the yolk. But the sausages, hash brown etc was full of flavour, and the butter was spreadable which made a change from other hiteks we have stayed.
Review 110:The welcome on arrival was really friendly, even though I interrupted the staff members lunch. She was then very informative and helpful even providing taxi numbers when I asked. Our room was light, airy, n a lovely size with a very comfortable bed.
Review 111:A motor / compressor came on a 11 at night and 7 in the morning. This was very loud but none of the staff was aware of it which is strange considering it vibrated through the building.
Review 112:Location, room all very nice
Review 113:My only request was a quiet room, Dont have room 8 if you are a light sleeper. There is a constant buzzing noise from boiler room near by. Had two restless nights. The hotel was aware of this but did not move us to another room for the second night, they said they were full.
Review 114:Comfy bed , near to Chesterfield town.
Review 115:Not really bad but requiring urgent attention was bathroom maintenance which is known of but not carried out. It would have been good to have a working lift for guests. Why not available ??
Review 116:The convenient location and friendly helpful staff
Review 117:Could have been a little more liberal with in room refreshments. Also hairdryer would be difficult for older people to operate
Review 118:Nice and quiet room, little noise, very relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff
Review 119:The only downside was walking through a very busy bar to check in where we stood and waited for 10 minutes. Maybe you could have a check in phone at the hotel end which calls a pager or phone to say customer waiting at hotel instead of people lugging stuff through large parties.
Review 120:The rooms are lovely not what I expected. You really need to have more pictures taken. The breakfast was lovely. The shower is very powerful.
Review 121:The dinner/evening menu doesn't really hold back on the calories - some healthier options would have been nice. Also we couldn't get any WiFi in our room, but this wasn't really a necessity for us anyway.
Review 122:Better room space than the likes of a TravelLodge or Premier Inn. We had enough room to put the travel cot in the entrance hall of the room - stops our son from trying to watch TV after being put to bed! Lovely shower, clean room, great staff. Particularly enjoyed the breakfast.
Review 123:Room a little draughty from window . Sign on lift saying for house keepers only & not to use . Luckily we had a room on ground floor .
Review 124:Made very welcome on arrival , very friendly staff , spacious room , great food nice & quiet . Great central position .
Review 125:We need not even enter the accommodation. The pictures on booking.com appear to show a country pub with accommodation..... The reality:.... A housing estate pub with extension that mimics a country escape. False advertising. Did not want to leave car on pub car park. Drove straight off and had luxury stay at Casa... Fully recommend
Review 126:Went down for breakfast on the Sunday morning 9.10am. At 9.50 am we still hadn't got our cooked breakfast. I know everything is cooked fresh and a lot of people all want to eat at the same time. Surely another chef should have been organized to cook the meals. We had arranged to meet friends at 10 am which meant we were extremely late.
Review 127:Comfortable room / nice atmosphere in the bar and some friday night music.
Review 128:Staff were friendly an polite they even fitted us in for a meal on Mothering Sunday although we hadn't booked. We will definetly use the same venue for our next stay.
Review 129:Very hard pillows and no option to swap/have softer. Food not bad but had a lot better,as usual with most of these places photos looked a lot better than the actual place. I must say though that they were having a revamp the day after we left, painting etc. but still a bit disappointed
Review 130:staff friendly
Review 131:Nothing.
Review 132:Lovely spacious room, with sofa and a good working desk; comfortable bed; very helpful, friendly staff; location convenient for my purposes, near bus stop 16 into town (8 minute trip); plenty of free parking; excellent breakfast, cooked to order; wide range of good value food on offer in the restaurant. I very much appreciated the free bottle of mineral water. There is a separate entrance for the hotel area, if you prefer not to enter through the pub.
Review 133:Being charged £20, to have the sofa bed made up even though I had booked the family room so that we had 2 beds, as we were travelling for a funeral myself and my brother
Review 134:Breakfast was excellent and the breakfast staff were very good
