Reviews for Peak Edge Hotel at the Red Lion

Review 1:Lovely to have a room with a view of running water. Staff were very helpful, especially the Red Lion staff member who brought my food order to my room and took the trouble to bring me extra bottled water.

Review 2:loved it, little touches like being shown to my room and a Christmas tree in there. Really impressed with the size and cleanliness of the room and bathroom. Such good value for money

Review 3:The smell from the drains in our room and the reaction of the staff member when We mentioned it.

Review 4:Good size room. Good food in the Bistro and great staff in the bistro.

Review 5:our food wasn't great fish over cooked and pigeon tough. Not a great response from the waiter when we complained

Review 6:Staff were mostly great and hotel and pub looking very festive and lovely

Review 7:Trivial, but we ran out of marmalade at breakfast! Everything else was great.

Review 8:We brought some additional family members (grandchildren under 5 and their Mum) to spend the afternoon with us playing games in our room. Staff were very helpful with this, giving us extra cups, biscuits and even fish food to take outside to the pond! Dinner was excellent too.

Review 9:Menu not vast. Vegetables not as per menu. One selection not avilble on a Thursday evening, menu only changed once a week. Porridge cold, returned to be reheated. Flowers on table were dead.

Review 10:Bedroom well appointed, could do with heated towel rail. Staff very helpful and friendly. Bar area nicely layed out.

Review 11:Some confusion in serving the evening meal although the staff were very apologetic.

Review 12:Idyllic and classy countryside retreat. Rooms are of a very good size and are also of an excellent standard. Proximity to Chatsworth House. Excellent breakfast and evening meal at the Red Lion.

Review 13:Special mention to sarah at the reception very friendly and welcoming by taking us to our room. First breakfast service was lovely--well done to kitchen staff. Best birthday get away ever!!!!! will definitely come back and recommend the hotel. Well done to the staff.

Review 14:Wooden bed not comfortable & kept banging legs on side. No electric socket for dressing table ( mentioned to reception).

Review 15:Quiet & warm. Spacious room.

Review 16:At breakfast the young man who served us was good but had a very dirty uniform on and looked untidy. This made us question cleanliness of hotel.

Review 17:Great rooms, lovely food, service good

Review 18:Room was fantastic, we stay in many hotels including Michelin star places and this view of the countryside was one of the best. Food was very good indeed, a superb homely but traditional feel to the décor and a cosy atmosphere for what is quite a large building. We WILL BE GOIN BACK VERY SOON!

Review 19:Erratic pricing policy - I was charged the same price for the better rooms as I was for the standard rooms. Restaurant is variable in standard - some things are super and some are distinctly odd!

Review 20:Beautiful scenery; pleasant staff; nice rooms; electric car charging! More hotels need to think about the environment and allow charging facilities.

Review 21:Breakfast service was a little slow. Restaurant food was superb, but the portions were too small.

Review 22:Great location and nice view from room. Very clean and comfortable.

Review 23:Nothing! :)

Review 24:Beautiful setting, lovely staff, lovely room, lovely bath .. amazing stay, one of the best hotels I've stayed in - and I'm fairly well travelled!

Review 25:Our dining experience. The service was extremely slow and it wasn't busy. The pasta was under cooked, and gave 'al dente' a new meaning! The waiter apologised and said our drinks would be free but they were put on the bill. Needless to say, no tip or recommendation!

Review 26:The rooms were comfortable and clean.

Review 27:Not enough sockets in room for device charging etc. Even finding somewhere suitable for plugging in hairdryer not easy. Easily solved with extension lead.

Review 28:Other than too few power sockets, an excellent standard of room, spacious, with very comfortable bed and spacious bathroom. [Juliet balcony room]

Review 29:The noise from the wedding disco on Saturday night was intrusive in the restaurant. Also drunk wedding guests! It wasn't a problem in the hotel.

Review 30:Excellent location and very well designed hotel. Good food. The lighting was brighter than last time we stayed, which is good. Staff are extremely helpful

Review 31:Way too expensive. Food was average not great. Not alot of choice.

Review 32:Hotel was lovely. Everything is super over priced. Drinks range from 4.50 to 250 and our evening meal took forever and cost 70 pounds ....

Review 33:Keep an eye on the bill at the end of your stay....we were charged for 4 cream teas when we only had 1...again this was soon rectified.

Review 34:This is our 2nd visit......I had requested hypoallergenic bedding a week before our stay. On arrival we discovered the bedding was still of the feathered variety.....this was rectified very swiftly. So not a huge issue, but I was a little disappointed about it. I also requested the cream tea on arrival and for the scones to be plain not with fruit......this was perfect no problems at all. The food is amazing (one of the reasons we keep returning) although 3 little scoops of ice cream for £5.50 was not worth it. The cheese board is very tasty as is the £26 steak. Consistency can be a little lacking....no peppercorn sauce with the steak on the 1st night but we got it on the 2nd night, had to prompt for the bread board which was again sorted very swiftly. Nothing is to much trouble for the team from the front desk to the house cleaners, all are very helpful and polite. We love this hotel and will be booking again soon.

Review 35:The toasters that are used for breakfast time. You need to change them for a more conventional hotel style toaster.

Review 36:Lovely atmosphere we both felt very welcome and relaxed.

Review 37:My expectation levels have now been reset, its going to be difficalt to surpass!

Review 38:Staff were extreamly helpful, the food was amazing, the room was better than I expected from the price. I wish it could have been a longer stay than the one day! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Review 39:We stayed here previously and thought the overall stay was amazing. Loved the quality of food and wine. The staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We will return soon.

Review 40:The way the hotel is arranged some rooms are not so private. The WIFI did not work very well. Service at breakfast was slow.

Review 41:Nice, large, well laid out rooms with excellent toilet/bathroom. Hotel is in a relatively remote location which might suit some more than others

Review 42:No bad experience. However, much as we were delighted to have been upgraded and appreciated the big comfy settee we thought that the shower space could have been enlarged by moving the dividing glass a few inches...there wasn't as much space as in the other rooms!

Review 43:Love the rooms, the space and the decor. The staff are friendly and efficient. The chefs do a magnificent job, our evening meal was superb.

Review 44:The staff were all delightful, helpful, friendly, well presented and good at their job. The food was exceptionally good. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The hotel is geared towards functions, such as weddings, and clearly knows how to offer a good experience.

Review 45:Bathroom too dark and no magnifying mirror. Dinner: food excellent, very well prepared but service extremely poor. Pity as this clouded an otherwise pleasant stay.

Review 46:The only negative was the very noisy bathroom fan which you could not turn off.

Review 47:The restaurant was superb, fantastic food and a relaxed atmosphere. Our room was large and comfortable with an attractive view and peaceful location

Review 48:Lovely staff, very apologetic of room allocation error but more than made up for this with a free upgrade to a suite. Dinner in the restaurant was great value also. Would recommend.

Review 49:Absolutely brilliant, all the staff without exception were lovely, helpful, polite and accommodating. A really lovely location with superb views - the rooms are very spacious and very comfortable. The meal at the Red Lion in the evening was superb, one of the best we have had and trust me we have had a few! An all round excellent visit and we will be back!! Congratulations to the team.

Review 50:One or two minor problems which to be fair were sorted quite efficiently.

Review 51:Watching the baby moorhens feeding in the lake which we could do from our balcony.

Review 52:The lighting in the room was inadequate and poorly placed. The choice of dishes on the menu was limited and pricing was unclear. Although "specials" were available there was no board or insert in the menu to provide clear information.

Review 53:Our room was large and clean. The hotel was quiet. The food was well cooked and presented.

Review 54:Everything was perfect ;)))

Review 55:The size of the rooms were amazing, very comfortable. The restaurant and service second to none. We will defiantly be booking in again

Review 56:We stayed for one night in the Heath Suite and everything about this hotel was amazing. The room was spacious and comfortable and the food was excellent. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 57:Took ages for the room to get warm. Weather was unusually cold. Sunday evening menu was disappointing in our opinion so we ate out at a local pub. We all have different tastes at the end of the day.

Review 58:Bed was great

Review 59:The suite could have had a little more character

Review 60:Fabulous modern deluxe suite; excellent bar and restaurant and superb food. All staff went out of their way to make our stay special

Review 61:The service for dinner was unbelievably slow. I arrived in the restaurant promptly at 7.30 pm, the time for which I had booked a table for dinner. The first course arrived at 8.28 p.m.! When I asked for a second glass of wine the head waiter did bring it to the table with the comment: "This one is on me. I am very sorry for the delay". At breakfast, while I was waiting for the very slow toaster to make a slice of toast, my table was being cleared and had been moved when I returned to it! This was not very efficient, especially as my jacket was still on the back of the chair in which I had been sitting!

Review 62:Clean and modern bathroom and bedroom.

Review 63:During daytime hours there was lobby noise from people checking in and out! Since we were seldom there during the day it really wasn't a huge problem. The hotel was hard to find!

Review 64:I liked the fact that it was out in the country! That it has an adjacent bar and restaurant where the waiters and staff are friendly and the fopdvis good.

Review 65:The venue cant cope with a Wedding and normal Bistro operation. As an evening guest of the Wedding and a Hotel Guest, we arrived early to take advantage of the facilities. Access should be made to all areas. We were made to feel excluded from the nicer aspects of the venue. You will need to book if you want to eat in the Bistro during the day when a Wedding is on. This should be made clear on the Web Site. The staff on Reception when you check in need to be more Customer focussed.

Review 66:The comfy Bar & Bistro area and the quality of the food were excellent. The Bedroom was spacious and of high quality but not worth the price.

Review 67:Headboard above the bed was dusty. you had to go through the function room to get to the restaurant and bar and there was a wedding the second day so had to walk across in the rain. The bar staff were pushed to cope and I waited 20 minutes for a drink. The second night my husbands Rib eye steak was very fatty.

Review 68:Loved the big bed and the view from the window in our room. The food was amazing the first night and we had free canapes both nights.

Review 69:Modern hotel and Inn (but with a country style); large bedroom with plenty of storage space and good sized bathroom. Only 15-20 mins from Chatsworth House.

Review 70:a bit underwhelming breakfast the usual awful music which the staff kindly turned down on request the bread toaster was as slow as sunburn

Review 71:good location for peak walks

Review 72:Everything, the decor was modern but very stylish, the bedroom, no 206, was very comfortable and peaceful, the bed large. All the public areas were very clean and well arranged, the staff very friendly, helpful and professional. The food was really excellent and good value. Really could not fault the place only highly recommend it.

Review 73:The taster menus with wine match in the restaurant was exceptional. The bathroom was to five star standard. The breakfast was a perfect finish to a great stay .

Review 74:Firstly we were checked in by a woman wearing a coat, smelling of stale cigarettes who felt it a good idea to let us know she wasn't actually meant to be at work and had a rough night the night before. Not what I expect from a four star hotel. The bed was propped up with timber in the middle and squeaked everytime you moved, hence us waking up at 4am and not being able to sleep. The service and quality of the food in the so called bistro was diabolical. How a handful of lettuce, six prawns and less than a squirt of seafood sauce, served with stale bread can be called a prawn cocktail is beyond me. It was a tasteless, cheap mess. The restaurant manager was not interested in the slightest. I stay at the Red Lion often but this experience has definitely put me off returning.

Review 75:The Red Lion is always trying hard to create interesting takes on classic dishes. Most of the time this hits the mark but sometimes it can lean towards the pretentious, which is a pity.

Review 76:This is our second visit and it is still as wonderful as ever. First class luxury in lovely surroundings with the added bonus of a top notch Inn next door.

Review 77:Our priority for the room was a balcony, which is why we paid the high price for this hotel. We booked the advertised "Executive double room with balcony" (wording correct at time of booking, Jan 2015). There was no balcony, only double inward-opening doors with a glass screen in front. This ruined our stay. The hotel has offered as compensation a discount off future stays but of course this is no use since we will not be staying there again. Since refusing that offer the hotel has not responded. The hotel has, however, changed the wording on all their advertising to "Juliet balcony" as we requested in order to avoid disappointing other guests, despite not offering an apology or acceptable compensation.

Review 78:The beautiful scenery and bathroom facilities.

Review 79:The dinner menu was a list of ingredients with no explanation as to what half of it meant - 'cod yolk', for example?! Having to run through the menu with the waitress/waiter to have it explained is tedious when it could so easily be explained on the menu. First morning breakfast was fine apart from no milk for tea and coffee which we had to go in search of and last morning breakfast wasn't good but I think maybe the usual chef couldn't make it in due to the very heavy snow fall and unfortunately they had run out of the smoked salmon and cold ham too. Unfortunately there was no explanation given and it was a very disappointing end to our stay.

Review 80:Very comfy beds, generally friendly and polite staff, good food in the evening, great bar staff willing to make cocktails off menu, friendly waiting staff.

Review 81:Breakfast a bit of a disappointment. Produce great but service and execution not so good. fried bread you needed a chisel to cut and black pudding nearly raw :(

Review 82:I loved the Red lion , surroundings, food and service excellent. 10 course taster menu divine !

Review 83:Noise of some description, possibly tv from room below Bistro menu a bit fussy

Review 84:Room was tastefully decorated, spacious and comfortable. Bathroom was luxurious, lovely deep bath and rain head shower, took full advantage of no children, had a long swim :-) Bistro was a friendly environment tastefully decorated, relaxing, nice atmosphere. We would definitely return, as all in all, it's a great location and quality hotel :-)

Review 85:The food. Baguette steak overcooked (I am aware it is skirt which should be tough but should be medium rare at most and we were recommended to order medium). Saturday breakfast 7/2/15 minuscule 1 tiny bacon slice, 1 sausage, half a mushroom, half a black pudding etc. Sunday breakfast tremendous.

Review 86:The staff, the room and the location but mainly the staff, except in the restaurant. On the Friday the staff seemed to disappear and despite waiting we left without the coffee we wanted.

Review 87:Portion sizes were a bit small, definitely requires 3 courses to approach being full.

Review 88:Excellent rooms with fantastic en-suite facilities. Food at the attached pub was amazing.

Review 89:Lack of attention to car park which was extremely icy and caused a serious fall to my wife. Ridiculous having to go outside especially in bad weather, to get to the restaurant just because a wedding was blocking up the other entrance. This should have been thought of when the hotel was designed. Staff were totally unconcerned about this

Review 90:Food at the Red Lion restaurant - this is very good and the serving staff very helpful & friendly This was the best part of our stay - pity about the rowdy wedding guests who were allowed to make a dreadful noise throughout the evening

Review 91:drinks are quite expensive but to be expected with the standard of the hotel.

Review 92:our room was brilliant!! very clean! the staff helpful and kind! food and wine very nice!!! would stay again!

Review 93:The hotel as whole was a lovely place and the workers came across as nothing is too much trouble for them. Very clean, very comfortable and really nice. When I arrived at the hotel, I was walked up to my room, and not left to find the room on my own, not that it was complicated to do so. The receptionist took care to tell me the facilities and seemed that she knows her hotel. Later during the week, when my sat nav could not locate a place as I am very new to area, they not only printed the direction for me, made a point at the end of day to check I got there. Nice touch, remembering your customers and showing you care. Most importantly to me, I felt safe, comfortable and got on with my work. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the breakfast was generous. The staff there were attentive and accommodated that I need a quite table. Too good of a service, stopped me from using the room service which what I normally do. I was definitely spoilt for choice. I hope I get another business assignment in Chesterfield, I would definitely book there again. But really this hotel is too lovely to be for business, it should be used for celebrations and weekend away. I would highly recommend it. Thank you to all the staff for making my stay so wonderful.

Review 94:Nothing

Review 95:Very friendly and helpful staff, excellent service through out stay. Food served was top quality and very tasty. Will definitely look to book again.

Review 96:Lighting in rooms so poor you can hardly see yourself in a mirror Restaurant was really cold

Review 97:Comfy beds, nice restaurant, nice ambience, friendly staff, really nice food

Review 98:The room could do with a minibar. The bed was really low and sank in the middle so a bit uncomfortable. We booked a table at the bistro. We weren't overly impressed with the food. For the price, we were expecting real gourmet cuisine but it doesn't quite live up to it. The fish came with fennel, which translated as two halves of fennel bulb floating in sauce. Not easy to eat. The side order of veg cost 3.50 and was raw. The cutlery was dirty.

Review 99:The hotel is really lovely. Clean, modern rooms, stunning scenery that we didn't see until the next day as we arrived in the dark. Looks lovely when you arrive with all the fairy lights.

Review 100:Absalutly amazing night... The weather took a turn for the worse but the whole place worked together & still provided an amazing stay!! Were actually thinking of holding our wedding here xx

Review 101:Friendliness of staff was great, shown to room personally and showed around. Decided to get engaged whilst there and were congratulated by the staff in the morning! Great personal treatment to guests makes all the difference.

Review 102:No soap dish or rack in the shower. All the decor is brown and feels very depressing. Room took ages to warm up with fan unit. Bedroom chairs uncomfortable. Eco bulbs in bedroom hopeless. Food in bistro cold and unappetising.

Review 103:The bed was comfortable and the reception staff were helpful.

Review 104:Beautiful picturesque location, comfortable room with a balcony and a fantastic bistro menu. We booked at the last minute but would definitely visit again when in the area. A delight.

Review 105:Bed was a bit uncomfortable. Could also do with more staff in the bar and restaurant in the evening when they have a function on, service was a little slow at times.

Review 106:Location was lovely and close enough to various tourist locations. Hotel is still fairly new (only 4 years old) but has plenty of charm. Rooms are spacious, well equipped and with lovely bathrooms. Only negative was the bed, felt like it had two single mattresses put together as there was a big dip in the middle. Pub restaurant attached was great, served fabulous breakfast, lunches and dinner. Not a great selection of beers if you are an ale drinker.

Review 107:NOTHING !!!

Review 108:Our welcome was excellent and the Hotel staff were all extremely helpful. The owners were also very approachable and helpful. The Room (207) was superb, large and quiet. A Great bathroom with a super size Bath and separate shower with a quenching shower head. The Bistro food was EXCELLENT and very reasonably priced. The roaring open fire was a treat on a cold murky November evening. We would not hesitate to recommend.

Review 109:The shower could be a bit stronger. Breakfast was nice, but the continental buffet was a bit limited (good for a one-night stay, but I wouldn't recommend it for long working periods).

Review 110:Very spacious room with a comfortable bed. Excellent restaurant! Dinner was awesome. The location is ideal if you're visiting the Peak District, but I was on a business trip to Chesterfield. Close enough to the city centre.

Review 111:We were kept waiting on arrival and also when we entered the restaurant for dinner. Both these waits were acceptable, but even so an apology would have been appreciated but none was forthcoming.

Review 112:Full marks for the excellent breakfast. Restaurant food was good and the bedroom spacious and well equipped.

Review 113:The hotel would definatly benefit from leisure facilities, pool, spa etc...

Review 114:Such a great hotel with beautiful surroundings and the bar bistro was amazing.

Review 115:The size of the room The privacy of the bathroom from the main room The view across the fields The quietness of the room The comfiness of the bed The friendliness of the staff

Review 116:Staff tried their best to stop the kids from the wedding running through the pub and restaurant but were not very successful so that was a little annoying and needs looking at to avoid non wedding guests being disturbed.

Review 117:A must stay to enjoy the superb gastronomy that is to be had in the bistro. Only one niggle was lack of accessible plug sockets for chargers etc. Only had one in our room and it was under the dressing table. Not easy to get at if.you are getting on a bit!

Review 118:Excellent stay, staff very helpful. Bedrooms situated away from function rooms so very quiet. Rooms large in size and high quality fitted out. Restaurant excellent and atmosphere very welcoming.

Review 119:Red Lion bistro had a wonderful setting and beautiful interior -however, menu (evening dining) is very pretentious and overpriced unlesschoosing daily specials. Description of food misleading, portions poor(especially vegetarian). Complained one evening as very dissatisfiedwith meal presented, but dealt with well by the restaurant team andwe're interested to hear my feedback.

Review 120:Rooms had lovely decor with nice big ensuite. Great for a fewnights stay.

Review 121:I think there might be two chefs because the steak I had on our second night was not quite as good as the one my wife had on the first night

Review 122:everything there is nothing to dislike about this place the staff are very helpful and attentive the place is spotless everywhere the food is really good a bit pricey but very good

Review 123:Lighting was poor in the wardrobe area. Portion size at breakfast was an issue which we discussed with Christoph, the restaurant manager. Hopefully our comments were noted as they did appear to be welcomed.

Review 124:Location,service, quality and comfort of the room. Bathroom large with walk in shower and large, deep bath. Bed comfortable with quality bedding. Staff very friendly and helpful. Beautiful views. We hope to return in warmer weather, although the log fire was lovely!

Review 125:The staff could not have been nicer and more helpful, plus made us feel special The food was gorgeous and the suite we stayed in for our wedding anniversary was excellent, we'd definitely go back.

Review 126:Hard bed with awkward bed base, not the most comfortable of beds! Meal sizes were quite small for the prices listed.

Review 127:Modern decor, large room with good bathroom. Staff cordial and helpful.

Review 128:Heating seemed very hot in the night, didnt want to open window fully as was on the ground floor. Bar drinks expensive.

Review 129:Nicely decorated, modern hotel. Nice on site bar.

The Fine Print

Guests may bring their own travel cribs, which can be accommodated in all rooms. The hotel does not have any cribs available.
