Reviews for Le Clos d'Amboise
Review 1:This was a lovely maison de maître right in the centre of town with a beautiful garden overlooked by the chateau of Amboise. The interior décor is lovely too and the rooms very comfortable. Food was excellent and the staff very kind and helpful. The Clos d'Amboise is ideally situated for visiting the chateaux of the Loire - Chenonceau is only a short drive away for instance.
Review 2:The food at the hotel restaurant was very average
Review 3:Great location, beautifully decorated. Liked the place so much that we came back for another night after our stay in a chateaux nearby. Both times the rooms were excellent. The deluxe room was spacious and oh so comfortable :)
Review 4:Graceful and charming, yet with some of the facilities, and something of the ambience, of a grand hotel, this was a particularly enjoyable place to stay. The staff were helpful, the food was good and the room was well appointed
Review 5:The street was under repairs and barricaded when we arrived. Not the fault of the hotel but would have appreciated an email notification, with instructions ( which we later found out was simply to remove the barrier and drive through
Review 6:Everything was wonderful. The room , the staff, the breakfast, in town location, ambience. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
Review 7:A wonderful hotel full of charm and a warm atmosphere. Superior room was large with a lovely view over the garden. Exceptional breakfast and well worth having! Lounge areas are nicely furnished with games tables and books etc. freely available. Would stay at this hotel again.
Review 8:Only problem, a temporary one, was roadworks on the street where the hotel was situated, which made access difficult. The staff had helpfully sent an e-mail to explain what to do, but unfortunately we were already in transit and hadn't picked it up. Next time I'm sure the road will be clear!
Review 9:Lovely old building, friendly staff, excellent breakfast and dinner, nice quiet environment.
Review 10:Locating property a problem with all the construction in front of hotel . Parking a problem for the above reason. 3rd floor room with low beams and husband bonked his head in the nite. Restaurant closed tues. No pool
Review 11:Centrally located, a beautiful small hotel, attentive staff with well appointed, large, clean rooms. Can be difficult to get to with current roadworks, but in all a great stay in a wonderful, intimate hotel. On check-out they told us to check out the Amboise markets, which wound up being one of our favourite experiences on our trip.
Review 12:No bad experiences. In fact on the evening when we arrived late and all the nearby restaurants were closed the kind gentleman on the reception desk went into the kitchen and managed to pull together eggs, salad and delicious onion soup for a much appreciated dinner with some great wine from the area.
Review 13:We loved the wonderful breakfast in the very beautiful restaurant. We also enjoyed the lovely garden and the daily visits from the neighbourhood black cat,
Review 14:To make our stay even more enjoyable, we would have liked to have a stand-up shower. Our room, #5, I think, was only equipped with a hand held shower device that precluded standing up.
Review 15:The location is very good, central to the attractions in Amboise and the Loire Valley. It has a nice off-street parking lot. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The property was in good condition, clean and outfitted with very nice period furnishings. The breakfast service was enjoyable and nicely done.
Review 16:The hotel is several blocks from the Loire. It is not such a long walk to the pedestrian area with lots of opportunities for eating. Quiet area, with not bad access. The hotel is quaint. My room was quite nice.
Review 17:The rooms could be modernized a little bit more.
Review 18:The staff was very welcoming. They showed us to our room and around the property. They were available at all hours of the day and were exceptional with our daughter at breakfast and throughout the day. This was a very relaxing and enjoyable trip.
Review 19:The restaurant was located in the bar and could be hardly taken for a 4 star hotel restaurant. The service was less than professional both in the reception and the restaurant and this hotel needs to do some work to justify it's 4 star rating
Review 20:None
Review 21:The furnishings were definitely of the period. The room was spacious with a little sitting area. Bathroom accessories were provided. Beautiful grounds. Breakfast was very nice.
Review 22:The hotel was charming and was located very close to the Chateau. We only had one night in Amboise but we really liked the hotel. It's much larger that you first realize. The staff was helpful with directions and information.
Review 23:Way too expensive for what you get. Granted, the place is old but it is also somewhat run down. Minimal amenities, hand held shower truly hand held as the holding device was inoperative, no washcloths, some lights burned out. Old, old world charm, 4 star prices. Nice property grounds, however.
Review 24:Location, property grounds
Review 25:An easy walk to restaurants and town highlights this small unpretentious boutique chateau style hotel was perfect. The pool and tranquil garden setting was the ideal way to compliment a day of viewing the surrounding grand chateaus. Breakfast was not the highlight but adequate when there is so much to enjoy at other meals.
Review 26:We were a bit disappointed with our bathroom - no shower. I know showers don't always come as standard in France, but really this hotel is big enough that it should offer them as standard. Also, although there's plenty to do in Amboise, sometimes on holiday it's nice to relax by the pool for a bit. Unfortunately the garden is so populated with trees that the pool is in the shade for pretty much the whole day, making sunbathing near impossible.
Review 27:Excellent location and a really nicely maintained chateau. It's literally 2 mins walk to the centre of Amboise.
Review 28:The garage for reserved parking was so small inside making it very difficult to get in and out of even with our compact car. It was also located up a steep hill.
Review 29:Friendly helpful staff in a quaint, historical old building. Very honest: when we accidently gave them an extra 50 euro bill, they came after us to return it!
Review 30:Vehicle access off the street and parking was quite difficult. Very narrow gateway off a narrow street and limited parking spaces.
Review 31:A class hotel with period charm set in beautiful grounds virtually central to the historic town of Amboise. Very helpful and friendly staff and amenable to our pet dog.
Review 32:The staff were odd and not too helpful, although not unpleasant. The staff need better training. The service was slow at times. Main course took 3/4 of an hour after starter. Desert was not good.
Review 33:Lovely hotel. Nice room with everything you could want.
Review 34:Excellent location in the centre of Amboise close to the town centre shops and restaurants, the castle and the Clos de Luce. A beautiful 18th century building with a big garden and swimming pool for relaxing after a busy day sightseeing in the region.
Review 35:Checking out they said our credit card didn't work and asked us to run to bank for cash. Our credit card company said no charge had been requested from hotel, slightly frustrating.
Review 36:Beautiful Location in center of Loire Valley. We enjoyed wine on the patio with view of garden.
Review 37:Room not well configured. Small with too much unnecessary furniture. Not sure best overall value for money.
Review 38:Good location, good breakfast, friendly staff
Review 39:We decided not to have breakfast, at €30 per day for the two of us, we decided that a freshly baked pastry and a coffee in one of the near by cafes would suit our needs just as well!
Review 40:The hotel was perfectly located near to the centre of Amboise. The grounds were a lovely tranquil retreat after a day of sightseeing. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was in the annex and was very comfortable, quiet and spacious.
Review 41:The beauty of the location, the general ambience and the comfort of the place; lovely furnishings etc. My only query was NO SHOWER - few people when travelling like to have baths rather than showers.
Review 42:Close to town centre with friendly staff and good facilities. However, on-site parking is limited and a little tight and 2nd floor rooms are in the roof apex and you are in danger of banging your head on the sloping ceilings if not careful. If you are over 6ft tall, definitely go for a lower floor room.
Review 43:Nothing really.
Review 44:The rooms were great, as was the entire complex. We were close to everything, but not so close to have unwanted tourists walking by. Staff was very helpful, especially holding the bar open til we were ready to leave! Parking was a little challenging, but always to be expected staying in historic town. We will definitely be back!
Review 45:Lovely place, super close walk to town once you can figure it out. Great Leonardo Da Vinci town and access to other places nearby. Wonderful swimming pool for a hot day, quiet and lovely.
Review 46:The staff were polite but distant.
Review 47:We enjoyed this cute hotel in Amboise set in a small chateau. The room was big by French standards and the air conditioning actually worked! The location was good, although that doesn't mean too much as Amboise is such a small village. Free Parking was a great bonus.
Review 48:Mediocre breakfast. Tepid water for tea. Had a very mediocre green salad with old leaves.
Review 49:Beautiful 17th century property with lovely gardens pool and outside areas to sit. Room had interesting beams, comfortable and spacious Couldn't get a taxi to the train station so one of the staff kindly offered to drive us
Review 50:Strange mix of decorations - 18th century pictures in old wooden frames next to prints of Tina Turner and James Dean. No holder for shower head and no shower screen. WiFi very patchy.
Review 51:Warm welcome, good parking in town centre and beautiful old building and peaceful grounds. Nice room on top floor with air con. great breakfast outside on the patio.
Review 52:Double bed was two single beds pushed together. If you stay here, make sure you don't get the room behind reception
Review 53:Amazing building and gardens, nice pool
Review 54:Excellent experience...nothing bad in any way.
Review 55:the staff were excellent. Very friendly and helpful all round. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated and the outside setting was peaceful with a beautiful garden and outdoor pool.
Review 56:Limited choice of food and wine in the hotel restaurant.
Review 57:Excellent hotel with small beautiful garden and nice small swimming pull. Very friendly personel. Very good location for Loire chateaux visiting.
Review 58:Difficult to drive into and exit off-street parking area from a single-lane, two-way street
Review 59:The beds were comfortable and the hotel is within easy walking distance of restaurants.
Review 60:Quiet and tranquil, but within walking distance of lots of stuff: the Seine, the Sunday market, the TI office, the chateau, shopping, the train station, etc.
Review 61:The second floor room had wooden beams jutting out of the walls, something to avoid tripping or hitting your head, hazards of a historical location, still a prize. Next time we will avoid the top most floor.
Review 62:Transports you to a bygone age with all the modern comforts. Pause awhile, excellent recommendation by Rick Steves in his book on France and Provence, must reads before going to France :)
Review 63:Advertised elevator but our room was in separate wing with NO elevator. Should include in description that the elevator serves only a portion of the property. Also LIMITED parking space!!! They should get rid of pool/grassy area and put some parking there. Very frustrating
Review 64:Staff helpful and friendly.
Review 65:The room was actually quite small because of exposed beams. With two large suitcases it was very cramped. It was very warm when we were in Amboise and the air-conditioner seemed to make the room hotter rather than cool it down.
Review 66:We had an attic room facing onto the back garden. We had a large bathroom with a bath and separate shower. The toilet was in another room. It was nice to have an electric kettle, small fridge and safe.
Review 67:We were not enamored with the Breakfast options but perhaps our expectations were too high!
Review 68:We loved the "games" rooms where tables were set up for playing cards or chess. Perfect for families!
Review 69:The bed was a bit hard. The hotel provides only shampoo (no conditioner).
Review 70:We had a lovely stay at Le Clos d'Amboise. The hotel has everything you could want: a friendly staff, clean rooms, elevator, parking, a pool, sauna and yummy breakfast. Plus the hotel is very well decorated, creating a special atmosphere.
Review 71:The only disappointing event was dinning in the restaurant, there was a number of dishes not available on the menu including fish. and the timing of the of the delivery of the dishes ordered and the size was not acceptable. Breakfast good.
Review 72:The girls who were on duty day and night at reception took care of our every need. They made are stay so enjoyable, I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to my friends.
Review 73:The room in the old stables easily accessible, delightful décor and comfortable. The hotel is 5 minute walk from the Chateaux and Restaurants. A great experience
Review 74:Nothing at all.
Review 75:Location location location! Easy walk to Clos de Luce and Chateau Royal. Restaurants very close as well. We had a beautiful room with extremely comfortable beds and lots of room for us and two teenagers! Staff very helpful and atmosphere of this Hotel is traditional but relaxed and comfortable. Highly recommended.
Review 76:Nothing to complain about!
Review 77:The hotel was in a great spot - very quiet and easy walking distance to the centre of Amboise. The facilities were first rate and very well presented. Staff friendly, helpful and always looking to assist (not always common in some parts if France). Our room was spotless and very well appointed. All in all a very pleasant experience.
Review 78:Amboise is an excellent base from which the Loire can be explored. The hotel is central and within easy walking distance to many restaurants. Room was comfortable and spacious, with large bathroom.Parking area could be tight at times. Staff helpful.
Review 79:Too much furniture in the room made it hard to open suitcases.
Review 80:Excellent location within easy walking distance of the chateau. Try for a room on the courtyard side; it can be noisy on the street. Garden/pool would be pleasant in the right season
Review 81:Do not get room 9 on 2nd floor Badly chipped bath, basin with mastic sealer dirty and peeling. Incredibly hot and air conditioning not working Mattresses seem to be made of cast iron, extremely uncomfortable Beware parking is very limited at the hotel and parking elsewhere in the town is very difficult at busy times
Review 82:We changed to room 7 on the 1st floor. Nice large airy room and everything worked, clean & tidy. Mattress still uncomfortablly hard as for room 9 Staff were good, faciliies seemed good although we did not try most of them
Review 83:We have stayed at this hotel before and loved it, but this time we were very disappointed by the changes that have been made. The elegance and style have gone and have been replaced by a cramped dining area serving a breakfast that at best can be described as below average. We will not be coming back.
Review 84:The shower... There needs to be a hook at shoulder height so you can wash with both hands not juggling the nozzle
Review 85:We splurged to stay here and it was an absolute pleasure staying there Special thanks to Pauline who helped us enormously when things didn't go to plan she managed to fix it
Review 86:Room was a little dated and the bathroom a little small but it was fine.
Review 87:The gentleman who checked us in and gave recommendations of where to visit was outstanding. He really gave great information and we loved where he sent us. Chambord Castle, Towers Wine Area, Last house Divinci lived. Very pleasant. The location was outstanding and easy walking for this town also parking was easy which wasn't true for the rest of the area.
Review 88:Gardens good (especially for town-centre location) but would benefit from more maintenance.
Review 89:Food: limited menu but excellent offering. Comfortable beds; clean, modern bathroom, room decor rather 'traditionnel'.
Review 90:very limited, tight car parking within hotel grounds. We were not in the main building and had noisy floorboards and water pipes. We paid extra for the room so my adult daughter and I would have separate beds. She had a very uncomfortable sofa-bed. Expensive.
Review 91:location, heated pool in leafy surroundings. Staff as helpful as they could be. Super restaurant just across the road from the hotel.
Review 92:Narrow entry and very tight limited parking. Very squeaky loose floor boards not only in our room. We heard every step the people above us made in their room (they made no attempt to be considerate of others) and we heard every footstep on the stairs. We heard all the water running down the pipes after the upstairs bathroom was used. My adult daughter was on a sofa bed which was very uncomfortable.
Review 93:Location was close to major attractions and restaurants, quiet from street noise. Staff were very helpful and polite, heated pool was wonderful after a day of sight seeing. Quaint with lovely leafy gardens behind the wall from the street.
Review 94:One of the reasons for booking was because site said it had parking but when we arrived, there was a wedding & so car park was full & we had to park down the st, we were travelling for a while & had lots of things in car, not keen on leaving things in car for security, so parking was important to us.
Review 95:A great little find. Very cosy & comfortable in a great position for walking around town.
Review 96:Limited menu in restaurant - no fixed menu e.g. But food excellent tho' not cheap.
Review 97:Friendly staff, with convenient location for town and chateau. Parking a plus and pool in the hotter months. Attractive setting.
Review 98:The AC didn't work in our room and could not be repaired because of the holiday. The nights were cool, so we kept the windows open, but the tiny street below was action packed all night making for fitful sleep. Management was sympathetic and adjusted the price, which satisfied us since there could be no other remedy.
Review 99:Elegant building with charming rooms in an historic town. Parking is tricky, but part of the fun.. The courtyard and public rooms are very congenial and the staff was super accommodating. Breakfast offered a nice selection at a reasonable price.
Review 100:Booked dinner, but service was awful (before we even ordered) and no-one else was booked in. We cancelled and ate out in the town which we all enjoyed.
Review 101:Lovely setting and we had a nice suite.
Review 102:Poor service from the staff....we tried to sit on the terrace for an early evening drink, and possibly done in the hotel, but were ignored by staff, despite waiting for a while, and even going inside to find someone to take our order. Gave up, and had good meal in town!
Review 103:Our 4th visit .The hotel has been extended to add a restaurant. Very friendly staff. The front desk is now being staffed by the most helpful and friendly young man,a pleasure to talk to and had all the info we requested at hand. We will be back.
Review 104:The air conditioning unit was very noisy, to the point where we turned it off as it was too loud to sleep properly. The room was then too hot.
Review 105:This hotel is stunning - beautiful garden/grounds and the hotel is decorated to a very high standard. The room was lovely - fairly spacious, clean and nicely decorated. Nice to have a kettle in room. Staff were great - friendly & helpful - & parking is available on site.
Review 106:Air conditioner was confusing to operate and didn't cool our room adequately.
Review 107:Our 2nd floor room was superbly done and very comfortable. Roomy and a very comfortable bed. Bath was clean with plenty of counter space. WI-FI worked just fine. It's a beautiful, historic property with a gorgeous courtyard. Lots of mature trees and lovely (surprise!) swimming pool! Ground were immaculate and beautifully landscaped. Restaurant breakfast was adequate. Also nice spaces to relax and enjoy company of other travelers. Staff was most helpful in recommendations of restaurants. (Try the place across the street!)
Review 108:Bathroom bit on small side and no separate shower.
Review 109:Staff were so good in reception and restaurant. Great position of hotel and close to restaurants etc. we were a family with older children and they loved the room and pool etc.
Review 110:The restaurant was poor for evening dinner and the breakfast needed to be rethought. It was a shame that it didn't match everything else.
Review 111:The room, the ambience, the garden and the proximity to the town. Very comfortable and relaxed place to stay in a fabulous location.
Review 112:Small rooms in annex. Main house might be OK. Open plan dining and lounge area hence eating accompanied by loud TV. Best to eat out.
Review 113:Convenient location
Review 114:Air conditioning fan a little noisy. Had to turn it off as couldn't sleep with it on.
Review 115:Loved the hotel, the location it is a 5 minute walk into Amboise. Just near the chateau. Rooms really modern and quirky decor. Loved the tea coffee in the room. Breakfast was lovely. Bonus to have a pool. Loads of great places to eat and drink nearby.
Review 116:Excellent friendly staff who made you feel very welcome. I stayed in Amboise for six nights and tried a number of restaurants in the town, however, the food at Le Clos d'Amboise was by far the best. The hotel is a tranquil oasis with a pleasant garden and pool and an ideal location for exploring the Loire valley
Review 117:Only bath rather than shower in en-suite. Parts beginning to look tired and dated. Toiletry restocking in ensuite non existent. Expensive but we found the whole area expensive.
Review 118:Very friendly staff. Full of character. Excellent location.
Review 119:We arrived in the dark - don't make the same mistake. The Amboise one-way system totally fooled the satnav & us.
Review 120:Great building, gardens & pool. Attentive, helpful staff. Excellent base for exploring Amboise on foot, or the Loire Valley by car, or bicycle. Fine, generous breakfast served on the garden terrace.
Review 121:Our room on the 3rd floor felt like we were in the attic. The bathroom was awkward & small. Fell trying to navigate getting out of tub, should have been some sort of bath mat.
Review 122:Close to the main shopping & restaurants. Cool old mansion
Review 123:Parking was very limited, space for 8 or so cars and if you check in late (for us it was 7pm) there was no space and we were directed to park round the corner at a public carpark. The hotel did agree to let us park within the hotel grounds however due to us having a historic vehicle which we were very pleased with.
Review 124:Attention to detail. The food was beautiful too. Nice characterful room. Air con available in the room but it was better to have the window open to be honest. We would definitely recommend this hotel.
Review 125:the room was wonderful
Review 126:Cold room
Review 127:Location Location location
Review 128:Old fashioned
Review 129:Good position
