Tyr Graig Castle

Tyr Graig Castle descritpion
Hotel Tyr Graig Castle sells fast on our site. With stunning views of Cardigan Bay, this impressive Victorian building has a magnificent cliff-top location, between the sea and the mountains of Snowdonia National Park.
Originally built in the late 1880s for a famous gun maker, Tyr Graig Castle was constructed to resemble both a castle and a double-barreled shotgun.
Today, the building has been converted to offer 4-star guest accommodations, but it still has beautiful original Victorian features, including stained glass windows, original wood paneling and decorative floors and ceilings.
All of the rooms with private bathrooms have modern comforts and facilities, including TVs and DVD players.
The lounge has a real log fire and drinks are available from the bar. There is also a terrace with superb views of the water.
Overlooking Cardigan Bay, the restaurant offers traditional home-cooked British and Welsh food, made with the highest quality, freshest seasonal produce available locally.

Reviews for Tyr Graig Castle
Review 1:Wifi was there apparently, but I couldn't connect. No massive deal, but a bit disappointing.
Review 2:Lovely period hotel, but the facilities are modern and the rooms very pleasant. Excellent breakfast, very pleasant staff. A pleasure to stay there.
Review 3:Great location, exceptionally friendly staff, lovely food, beautiful sea view from restaurant and my room. Fantastic walking. Staff could not do enough for me. Brilliant stay
Review 4:The bathroom was tiny and could have done with a bit more attention to cleaning. The shelf behind the headboard was very dusty.
Review 5:Good location and fantastic sea view. I could hear the sea when the bedroom window was open. The staff were lovely.
Review 6:We couldn't fault this hotel in any way at all.
Review 7:The hotel was wonderful, beautiful views, large clean room, large bathroom, The manager and staff are extremly efficient in the service provided.
Review 8:The bedroom was very small and electric shower was very poor. Very little water pressure and did not control.
Review 9:Location was nice and staff friendly. Room had a nice balcony see view.
Review 10:This was a perfect place to celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary. Fantastic location by the sea, wonderful food and excellent friendliness and hospitality of staff. A gem of a find to which we hope to return one day.
Review 11:Shower was rather cosy being 6ft1 22st strongman
Review 12:Building was lovely and quirky, very nicely kept, staff wer very good and food was excellent, views were amazing from the turrett room
Review 13:The room ( 5 ) was cold, damp and had about a CM of mould carpeting the wall behind the headboard. I since noticed that this was pointed out to the management and noted in a review back in July. 8 weeks later and the room is still being rented out in the same condition. .Do the Management care? I think not. Large sections of wallpaper have come away from the wall in various places with plaster dust falling from behind. Unable to sit drinking in the Conservatory ( Lean to ) and take in the "Stunning view" unless you order food. Room is for diners only and not people who have paid a hundred pounds per night to stop there. Wifi strength is very poor, and NOT available in either the room or public areas
Review 14:Tiled Floor in Hall. Stained Glass View from the room
Review 15:No bad experiences but beware of the very compact bathroom in one of the turret rooms.
Review 16:Brilliant location overlooking the bay with superb views from bedrooms and the dining room. Good quality food and very friendly service. The house is also very interesting and has distinctive Victorian stained glass, panelling and tiling.
Review 17:1st morning breakfast got my order wrong so I had to send it back. The second morning it was cold so I complained, 3rd morning didn't have cooked breakfast as I wasn't impressed, just had toast. Not a big selection for cold breakfast either. Had a meal there in the evening on the 1st night one of the waiters was playing on their phone instead of serving us. Don't have the goats cheese salad the ingredients were cheap the risotto was good though.
Review 18:The view from our room was amazing
Review 19:NONE.
Review 20:Friendly and warm welcome. Lovely, warm cosy hotel, very relaxing. Superb food. Will be staying again. Great find, a Hotel with history . Fantastic views.
Review 21:we seemed to be looked down on by the staff. The price paid for this was unjustified. It was a mediocre room with a lumpy bed overlooking a main road. For £97 a night I was expecting something more special.
Review 22:it's location was good and Barmouth is a lovely seaside town with a good beach.
Review 23:Small bedroom, very small shower room , uncomfortable bed.
Review 24:Sea views. Building with history, nice breakfast and evening meal, guest lounge. Friendly staff.
Review 25:The shower head had not been cleaned properly which i reported to the manager.
Review 26:Excellent location, lovely building. Nice room. Lovely staff. Would certainly stay again.
Review 27:There was absolutely nothing we didn't like
Review 28:We enjoyed everything about the stay x the views, the food ,the room ,the staff absolutely everything was perfect x a dream stay
Review 29:Lovely hotel with old world charm & fascinating history in superb location. Our room had great balcony with panoramic sea view. Staff attentive. Breakfast & dinner delicious!
Review 30:Surprised to find not all the pillows had pillow protectors on. The breakfast was perfectly adequate but not to my taste. I like fresh fruit for breakfast but non was available when I asked only tinned fruit which I can't eat, so I brought my own breakfast.
Review 31:The room was lovely the ensuite shower room was small as we knew it would be but it was perfectly adequate. The shower was powerful and water always piping hot. I was supplied with a heater when I complained our room was cold (only 11c outside!!!)
Review 32:The only real issue was the lack of wifi anywhere in the hotel.
Review 33:Has to be one of the cleanest hotels we have ever stayed in. The food was great and the staff are friendly with and old school attitude to looking after customers. How often do you get the chef coming out to not only discuss the food but to have a conversation.
Review 34:As shared openly by the manager, our bathroom was extremely small however it meant we had the beautiful beach view.
Review 35:Brilliant staff, clean room, clean hotel, beautiful breakfast, beautiful view of the beach from our bedroom. It was 10/15 minute direct walk to the beach and all of the shops. We really loved it here and the hotel made us feel so welcomed.
Review 36:What a lovely place with spectacular views across the bay from the conservatory. Be sure to get down in good time for breakfast to get the best views!
Review 37:Disappointed the restaurant was closed on the night we stayed as there was no chef on duty.Standard room - tight squeeze around the bed.Bathroom very small. Would book a bigger room if we stayed here again.
Review 38:Friendliness of the staff. Tea, Coffee facilities in the room Great sea view from the room Would definitely stay here again if passing
Review 39:Bed was a little too hard for me Shower was small being 6 months pregnant struggled to get in and out
Review 40:Hotel was lovely with great views Staff were very friendly and helpful Breakfast was brilliant
Review 41:We stayed in turret room and although didn't spoil our stay the bathroom was very small. If you take children I wouldn't recommend going into the grounds as it's set high in the mountains and has a low wall which could be a danger.
Review 42:Views are fantastic looking out to sea, excellent location for exploring wales. Staff very friendly, room was clean, nice quite hotel.
Review 43:Bedrooms needed TLC,shower head, shower tray and en suite, porridge should be included as a cereal choice and not a cooked choice.
Review 44:Fantastic views,friendly welcoming staff.
Review 45:Dated decor Staff struggled with English, they were from elsewhere in Europe Food, menu limited and suspect freezer driven Rattling doors due wind!
Review 46:Setting Sunsets Parking Clean
Review 47:Tiny shower room, hotel needs updating throughout, wifi very poor could only get signal in reception or dining area.
Review 48:We had a turret room which was unusual, loved being in a castle, views were excellent, only 15minute walk into Barmouth, good breakfast.
Review 49:Hard bed, but that is personal preference. Ladies toilet on 1st floor not so good with an infirm wife.
Review 50:Dining - food very good & dining room excellent
Review 51:We booked a standard turret room. The shower room was 3 ft x 9 ft (max). the electric shower ran cold half way through & had to be turned off and back on to make it work again, then it ran scalding hot. We were moved to a different room (no sea view) for the second night & facilities better. Was expensive for the standard provided which is in need of an upgrade. Was the most expensive hotel we stayed in during our week in north Wales and had the lowest standard of room and facilities. Wasn't able to have strawberries & ice cream for dessert - strawberries only available with cream !!! ?? I didn't understand either but didn't bother to argue.
Review 52:gin & tonic on the terrace our first evening. breakfast lovely.
Review 53:Smell of damp in room 5 traced to wall behind bed. Duty manager claimed not to know about it instead of being honest. Spoilt an otherwise excellent stay.
Review 54:Staff and facilities excellent as ever. Breakfast, location and view.
Review 55:This is a beautiful hotel with amazing views over the bay. The staff are very friendly and happy to help with anything. The area is very peaceful and quiet and easy to locate. We arrived on a motorbike and the car park was nice and secure. We would definitely return.
Review 56:There really was nothing to dislike unless it was having to go home afterwards.
Review 57:From the warm welcome in the magnificent wood clad reception we found our room with the most enormous bed. This was later found to be possibly the most comfortable bed we have found in a hotel and we have used a few. Down to dinner and met with the same warm welcome by the staff in the dining room. After, being seated at a table overlooking the sea we enjoyed a beautiful well cooked meal with nothing seeming to be too much trouble for the staff. The next morning we had a good breakfast and then spent the day walking the estuary. That evening we were again presented with a the same courtesy and a fantastic meal. Needless to say that after a day outside that bed seemed to be even more comfortable. We will definitely return.
Review 58:We had a lovely welcome from our host who gave us a brief history and tour of the premises. All the staff were very clean and smart and very polite. The food was excellent we had a smashing breakfast and evening meal and both were lovely. We went for a peaceful stay just to relax and this was what we achieved the views from this property are fantastic our room had a view from every direction it was fab. This property was built and designed by a famous gun makerin the Victorian times for a private holiday house , the building was then changed to accommodate a small Guest house so some of the rooms with the en-suite facility have been provided with quite a limited space, I would definitely stay here again but would ask for a room with a larger bathroom space. I would like to say a big thanks to all of the staff for making our stay so pleasant and hope that we may return again in the near future.
Review 59:We stayed in room 4 which has a balcony over looking the sea, we were lucky enough to be able to sit out in the afternoon sunshine with a glass of wine even in the middle of March! Breakfast was great, the room clean and the bed comfortable.
Review 60:Beautiful setting overlooking the bay, very imformative tour by the owner on arrival. Facinating background story to the hotel. Comfortable room and nice breakfast. Restaurant was closed due to unforeseen circumstances but owner pointed us in direction of local Italian restaurant where we had great meal and ambience.
Review 61:The views from the bedrooms and the restaurant are fantastic. The hotel has a lot of original Victorian features, but these are not compromised by the modernising that has been done.unusual
Review 62:The shower was not great, more of a lukewarm dribble than a shower. We mentioned it to the hotel and it seems to be a known issue. The rooms are fairly small, we found ours to be very comfortable but the size might be worth keeping in mind if you are travelling with a lot of stuff.
Review 63:Great location, very close to Barmouth, small but very cosy rooms, a stunning sea view with a balcony, and a dining room with a similarly fantastic view, and really friendly and helpful staff, especially the European guy who served breakfast. Great value, and would stay again.
Review 64:The building is beautiful inside and out. The room was clean and very comfortable. The staff were friendly, courteous and pleasant. I had a lovely sea view. It is a pleasant walk down to the harbour. I have no complaints about my short break at this establishment.
Review 65:I didn't expect a modern building or facilities but didn't expect it to be so in need of upkeep either.
Review 66:Excellent location overlooking Barmouth and the sea. Friendly staff. Really, really good food.
Review 67:Fantastic views, food delicious, cute but small room but what do expect from a late 19th century Country House. Very interesting history behind the house, well worth the slight inconvenience.
Review 68:The room was very small and in need of some TLC and a good dust especially behind the door and the bed.
Review 69:The friendly, helpful staff and the welcome tour provided by the owner on arrival with a detailed background of the castles' history.
Review 70:We didn't like our bedroom. It was smallish and rather drab. After seeing the reception areas we expected some style.
Review 71:We were very impressed with the reception areas. They are certainly grand and worth admiring.
Review 72:The décor is a bit dated for my taste although the building itself is stunning. When we came down to breakfast there was a pervading smell of mouldy bread which I found quite disconcerting - however the bread for breakfast was very fresh. My biggest regret is that we were in a first floor turret room and the room next door had access to a balcony that looked into our room. So we had to shut the blind and didn't wake to a sea view which disappointing - this is why I thought it was not good value for the money - I thought it would be really special.
Review 73:I loved the Turret room and it is a beautiful building. The location is fantastic with amazing views of the sea. The breakfast was good and the staff polite and attentive but not overly so - just right.
Review 74:Walk to the beach (only about 10 mins), but path a bit steep... especially after a couple of beers ;)
Review 75:Perfect for a short break from the rat race. Great meal and friendly staff. The chapel by the sea, just outside of Harlech, has the best quiet beach.
Review 76:Perhaps more variety on the dinner menu & specials board, but wouldn't say I didn't like the menu on offer.
Review 77:Everything about this hotel is excellent. The view is amazing, lovely building with character. If you like peace & quiet in a quality hotel then this is the place for you. Lovely staff, well trained, nothing too much trouble. Breakfast is well presented & tasty, bacon cooked as I asked. I highly recommend & will be staying again.
Review 78:the shower room was tiny. and we were unable to have a good shower because the water pressure was so low in our room
Review 79:the food was excellent .the position and views from our room and the dining room were amazing, particularly the sunset !
Review 80:We first went to the castle when we got married in 2008. Our visit was amazing and totally relaxing which was very nice. The scenery is spectacular and the views looking out to sea are wonderful. We decided to book up recently for our anniversary and we both had such a great time yet again. Thankyou for the amazing hospitality, which was given to us during our stay.
Review 81:carnt answer this question, whats not to like .
Review 82:we went for a few days to relax and unwind, and we certainly did that, such a beautifull peacefull place, cannot fault this castle in anyway, its cleanliness, friendlyness, good food, excelent staff, beautifull views, quietness, made our few days away just what we needed, could not ask for anymore, thankyou tyr criag castle we will be back x
Review 83:Nothing at all. Will be looking at going back there next year. We only stayed 3 nights I only wish it was a longer stay.
Review 84:Everything. Food was good, views spectacular room was very comfortable. Staff very polite and attentive there was nothing they could not do to make you feel welcome and comfy.
Review 85:There is nothing really to dislike about this well run hotel.
Review 86:This hotel has a great location on the cliff top overlooking Cardigan Bay. It is a good place to watch the sunset over the North Wales coastline. The rooms are comfortable and quirky and the staff are very attentive. Breakfast and Dinner are of good quality and the bar is well stocked with wines and other drinks. I have stayed at this hotel seven times and will return when next staying in Barmouth.
Review 87:We would have possibly had an evening meal with you but menu wasn`t varied enough for us.
Review 88:Location excellent for us. Breakfast times were good for us.
Review 89:we had room 3 which was small for a double room, very limited space to put clothes away. the shower is old and tired and very hard to get hot water from.
Review 90:the staff were very helpful and polite. the hotel and grounds held a very good position above Barmouth.
Review 91:Small ensuite, but we knew that and we don't have dances in ensuites. Small compact but complete.
Review 92:Location, welcome, food , staff and bedroom, stylish small castle with great views and interior, will return . Makes a great base for touring the area, with comfortable rooms and great Sitting Area.
Review 93:Carpet in the bathroom and a worn splintered MDF toilet seat wasn't very hygienic. We did have the last room so maybe this is not a reflection of the rest of the rooms
Review 94:Friendly attentive staff. Fabulous views of the sea from the dining room.
Review 95:The stairs were really steep but there is nothing you can do about that!
Review 96:The staff were really friendly and helpful as I was only briefly staying and needed to check out early. They gave me a breakfast tray with cereal so that I did not miss out on my breakfast. The views were great and although the single room was small it was comfy and totally adequate.
Review 97:Our room (number 1) was directly over the exhaust from the kitchen ventilation and there was a constant odour of "old cooking oil" whenever the kitchen was in use. Price-wise a fair bit on the high side for the standard of accommodation.
Review 98:location was far enough from town to be quiet but close enough to stroll. Views of coast and sea are great. Building has character.
Review 99:We enjoyed the host's hospitality and the architectural features of the building that have been retained which gives the hotel a nice historic feel. Breakfast was great and the location is good. Easy parking within the hotel grounds. Nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff in the restaurant.
Review 100:Nothing
Review 101:Friendly owners and staff, given a tour of the castle when we arrived. Breakfasts very good. Lovely views from our bedroom and the hotel is ideally situated to visit Harlech and Shell Island and other delightful scenic areas.
Review 102:Nothing! Possibly the en suite was a little cramped but it was adequate.
Review 103:The staff especially Khalid and Janette. The ambience and decor of the public areas. The balcony even in a standard room and the splendid views. The comfort and cleanliness in the room. The quality of the biscuits!
Review 104:Wallpaper a bit dingy and not my choice of design. Very small shower in ensuite. Update of decor would be good- white walls would be nice. Access to beach really involved using car.
Review 105:Full cooked breakfast was delicious. Attentive Romanian waiter Harald. Fantastic sea views both from our room in turret and from breakfast area. All staff very friendly and helpful- refroze our Freezella packs on request.
Review 106:Nothing to dislike.
Review 107:Great welcome from owner and tour with history of this unique hotel. In lovely and convenient location, great views of coast. Hotel clean and comfortable. Relaxing stay with freindly helpful staff. Good veggie breakfast, did not try restaurant. Single room a good size.
Review 108:The premises. The location. The host and hostess and staff were excellent. The food was outstanding. Brilliant chef! Made our stay very enjoyable. What a wonderful old house with such a history. Thanks very much, Colin and Doreen.
Review 109:From the very welcoming check in to our departure three days later was first class Highly recomend the evening meals all the staff where brilliant and very attentive our whole stay We will return when over that way again
Review 110:Bathroom was quite small, but who wants to spend much time in the bathroom?
Review 111:Very friendly and helpful staff Lovely hotel, full of character Great views across Cardigan Bay Excellent breakfasts
Review 112:Nothing!
Review 113:The friendly and helpful staff and owners. The food was excellent especially the petit pois and mushroom risotto! Beautiful views from the rooms out to sea and the sunsets were glorious!
