Reviews for Smugglers Haunt Guest House
Review 1:The building is very old and character filled. Being asthmatic, I found it difficult to breathe in the hallways which haven't been refurbished. There was a strong smell, of what I assume was, damp, which I'm sure can't be avoided in such old buildings. Once inside our room, there was no smell whatsoever.
Review 2:The location was great, within walking distance to everything we wanted to see. The room was very clean and modern and the staff were very friendly. The breakfast was the best out of the four hotels we stayed at on our holiday.
Review 3:Love the owners/staff Decor fantastic and quaint. Layout very olde worlde, lots of twists and turns with narrow passages. Step back in time with modern facilities.
Review 4:Very steep stairs, could do with a bit of bringing up to date decor wise. Bar no longer open and the owners are selling up soon.
Review 5:Excellent Breakfast, friendly staff and good location close to restaurants and quay. Good shower in the room we had and Quiet. Come and go as you please.
Review 6:Great location, good breakfast, thoughtful touches throughout, e.g. crockery and cutlery to use if you've ordered in a takeaway, irons and ironing boards available on each floor. A shame that the bar is now closed down - I hope the hotel doesn't follow it...
Review 7:A most un-welcoming experience, with a complete lack of understanding of the needs of the visitors. Senior staff/owner sullen and unhappy to be put in a position where he has to communicate with guests evident by his footwear which appeared to consist of worn carpet slippers only.
Review 8:Morning Waitress
Review 9:The current owner is retiring so the bar and restaurant was closed whichwe was not aware of at the time of booking so for just a standardB&B it is overprised. There is also no parking so you either need topay in local pay and display car parks or try and find a side street inthe town to park
Review 10:The Smugglers Haunt does not pretend to be anything other than what it is. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The location is good , with most amenities in Brixham within a short walk. Very good breakfast, served promptly, which set one up for the day, and importantly, served with a smile. Unfortunately the bar and restaurant were not available, which meant a walk into the town for an evening meal, and drink. However this did not detract unduly from the experience.
Review 11:We arrived to discover we had not been booked in for the days we hadasked for. The beds very uncomfortable and rooms cramped. Shower brokein day 2 of our stay - nobody mended it.very basic breakfast - nofruit, yoghurt We booked as a group to be able to meet in the evenings- despite the owner knowing they were going to close the bar they didnot inform us. Very tired poor accomadation - over priced - we willnot return
Review 12:No Wifi Obtainable on MY phone of my Sons phone Even in reception area. My Sons Room (No 5) smelled Very very damp bad small - Bad outlook from window also
Review 13:Staff Friendly Breakfast was good Bedroom and Bathroom was clean
Review 14:Breakfast times
Review 15:Really enjoyed our stay . Needs some tlc and re pairing but I'm sure this will be done when the new owners move in ? Very old quirky hotel . Ideal for the harbour and shops , up a hill n stairs not suitable for the disabled or elderly if not very fit as the stairs are very steep due to 18th century building . Breakfast 8 am till 9am which was too early for us but may suit others ? Breakfast quality was excellent served quick with s smile and good quality food
Review 16:Only the parking in Brixham, if out all day then very cheap to park overnight but a bit of a pain in the car parks in the day.
Review 17:The building was quirky, the managers were lovely, didn't meet any staff as the bar and restaurant is closed, just running as a b+b now, comfortable, clean and welcoming!
Review 18:The musty smell as you come the hotel, maybe due to the age of the building. The breakfast was adequate, a bit like a greasy spoon's style but plenty of it.
Review 19:The location is ideal, although not on the Harbour but very close to it. The pub is very quirky and you feel you are back in time of the Pirates'day! It is a shame that the restaurant and the pub is not in used anymore and only the rooms have this pub still alive, you can feel that in its time, it must have been a great place. It is run down in the downstairs area, but the rooms ( executive room ) is newly decorated with new carpet, a fridge, clean. The parking was opposite the Hotel in a car park at the bus station, after 6pm it is only £2.40 all night right until 10am the following day. I wish the hotel/pub can still do some business, it would be such a shame to see this place closed down, as it feels like it is one of the Landmarks of Brixham.
Review 20:Because of granite in thd walls - no wifi in the rooms. Also, because they are looking to retire, the bar and restaurant are both closed.
Review 21:Excellent location. Lovely couple. Comfortable bed and great breakfast.
Review 22:No bar
Review 23:Owners really friendly it's a shame they've stopped doing meals and the bar is closed however location is the best and real oldy worldy b and b. Been 3 times would definitely go again
Review 24:It's a bit tired and out of date. It's in need of refurbishment. The restaurant there has closed and they are now only serving breakfast. It's like a 1980s hotel.
Review 25:Good location to the harbour and our room was comfortable enough.
Review 26:Looked a little dark and dingy in the reception area. Bed had a bit of a sag in the middle but the linen was immaculate.
Review 27:Convenient location near public car park and a great breakfast.
Review 28:Owners very friendly, warm welcome when we arrived. I requested a room with a shower via the Internet booking this was accommodated. One of the best full English breakfasts we've had.
Review 29:Not that bad. The breakfast was good but it was like the waiter wanted to force me to eat toast. Would be nice to extend the breakfast from 8am - 10 am.
Review 30:I liked the room: the nice basket of tea and several goodies; wifi in the room; comfortable armchair to sit and watch t.v.; comfortable bed; nice extras in bathroom.
Review 31:hotel in general is a bit dated but the rooms are lovely, recently renovated and clean. No nearby overnight parking
Review 32:Very Clean, nice presented rooms and pleaseant people
Review 33:It was a little bit noisy outside one night in the late evening with party goers walking past the hotel.
Review 34:John & Jean were very friendly and helpful, clean comfortable rooms and a good breakfast with excellent coffee!
Review 35:Nothing.
Review 36:Stayed here for one night, fantastic location in the centre of town but in a quiet backstreet. Room was comfortable, clean and cosy, breakfast was great and the service friendly and professional. No parking on site but large public car park 30 seconds walk away with reasonable overnight charges. Can't really fault it!
Review 37:On arrival, I was greeted more like a long-lost friend rather than a paying guest; this continued all week. The meals were exceptionally good and I was impressed with the choice and the fact that you could "pick and mix" I would readily recommend this hotel to anyone and this will be my first choice should I visit in the future.
Review 38:It was a shame the bar area is now closed up as is the restaurant, except for breakfast. So facilities v limited, wifi only available in bar area, and no access after breakfast time. Carpets etc leading to rooms in dire need of renewal etc, but we understand the owners are trying to sell, so understand why they gave not done this,
Review 39:The couple who own the smugglers were very pleasant, the breakfast was very nice,
Review 40:Cant fault it .it was brilliant
Review 41:We were looked after very well and made very welcome.it was very relaxing there and would certainly go back there .The accommadation was lovely .The room we stayed in was excellent.thankyou for looking after us so well.
Review 42:Is quite old and tired now and needs refreshing, breakfast menu could be expanded.
Review 43:Clean and comfortable, nice and clean bed plenty of hot water, great location.
Review 44:I booked as a solo female thinking I could use bar & restaurant so I didn't have to walk into a place by myself. They closed bar & only use restaurant for breakfast. Wi Fi only works by hub in reception, so you have to sit there to use it. Place bit old fashioned but clean & tidy.
Review 45:Breakfast great. Service great.
Review 46:The only issue is the parking situation at the council run car park. They are currently messing around with the parking overnight situation so nobody seems to sure if you have to pay after 9 o'clock at night and what time it all starts up again .the overnight option on the car park ticket machine did not give a positive result. However i didnt get a ticket and i left the carpark just before 9 the next morning.
Review 47:this is right on the waterfront area about a 5 minute walk to the Golden hind.
Review 48:Unfortunately the hotel bar was closed for the winter which meant we had to go out for food. But plenty of eating places in Brixham to choose from. Also the Smugglers Haunt does not have on site parking but there is 24 hr car park (Oxen cove) that is a level 10/12 minute walk from the hotel. (Just over £3 for 24 hours).
Review 49:Great location. Within easy walking distance to everything in Brixham. Really clean room and extremely comfortable bed. (Room 8)
Review 50:management kind and friendly hotel was cosy and warm, good old fashion building, breakfast was superb, freedom to come and go as you please anytime, love the history of the building, would stay again
Review 51:Small, cold room directly above the bar, cold dining room, owner's husband very unfriendly. Shower leaked and thin old shower curtain stuck to you. To be fair the owner did give a partial refund but we won't be going back.
Review 52:Within easy walking distance of the shops, bars and harbour.
Review 53:Entrance and bar area rather depressing mainly due to no fires. people or atmosphere. Unable to watch tv in bed as positioned too high resulting in distorted picture. Outside lighting not usually turned on. Last time for breakfast 9 am..!!
Review 54:Good location in the centre of Brixham. Excellent cooked breakfast served by a charming young lady. Offered what we were looking for over New Year holiday as simple bed and breakfast
Review 55:My partner and I stayed at the smugglers haunt as a weekend away to see my son. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. would recommend any to stay at the smugglers haunt. We will be booking at the smugglers haunt in the near future.
Review 56:I really can't find fault, and would recommend it to family and friends.
Review 57:The location of the smugglers inn was great, just by the town and harbour.Very friendly landlord and the room was very clean and the breakfast first class.
Review 58:We had no sleep due the drunks shouting and swearing most of the night, so bad we left in the morning although we had paid for another night, it was a big birthday celebration which was spoilt, not the hotels fault but unbearable, wont be going back to Brixham no police for over 30 minutes to sort out the louts
Review 59:Hotel was clean, breakfast was wonderful,
Review 60:Difficult parking on arrival in nearby pay and display. Not obvious from usual approach.
Review 61:Comfortable, friendly feel. Warm welcome and sense of history/nostalgia
Review 62:As per other comments, there was lots of seagulls squawking early in the morning, but that is to be expected in a busy fishing port. Could hear the church bells but not during the night but that is traditional in Brixham and is linked to the hymn that was written locally at Berry Head. The only thing I wished I had paid heed to was the parking as the nearest car park is short term so we did a bit of a tour of the car parks on the day we wanted to spend in Brixham although it had different restrictions for parking overnight which was fine. The hotel is however very convenient for anyone who is travelling on public transport as the bus stop is only a short walk away.
Review 63:I stayed at the hotel for a short break with my mum. It is situated in the centre of the town close to all facilities. The owner was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our breakfast. Irons and ironing boards were located conveniently throughout. Also there were plates and serviettes for guests to use for any takeaways - what a good idea.
Review 64:Water was only just warm enough for a wash; too cold for a shower. Lots of stairs - but that is mentioned in the description. Not the hotels fault but no indication the Torquay ferry wasn't running, on the Sunday of our stay, owing to strong Easterly wind. It took someone in the queue to ring up to find out or we would still be there next morning.
Review 65:Prime location - easy access to shops, pubs & harbour. Quaint building obviously very old with nice period features. Pleasant, cosy atmosphere with a good breakfast served with a smile Rooms clean tidy & recently decorated. Weather was a pleasant suprise - the sun came out as we passed the Brixham town welcome sign.
Review 66:There was a bad smell throughout the B& B, I suspect the carpets needed a good clean. The parking situation was unexpected as I didn't know the area. Had to park in public car park a short distance away.
Review 67:The room/ bedding/ en suite were spotless and the building had a lot of charm
Review 68:we were lucky to be there when brixham fishstock was on you get chance to visit the fish market they have groups on live music craft stalls cooking demos and stalls showing all the different fish landed there also a chance to go a board one the trawlers
Review 69:The man who was running the hotel, i though was rude and needed a course in hospitality. Experienced the manager aruging with staff members, not good.
Review 70:Hotel was good, great location.Very clean and good facilities.Liked the ironing board and iron outside room if needed. Also plates and knives and forks were at hand if you needed a takeout.
Review 71:Typical pub accommodation of the past. Small, rather over-furnished, room but this is an old building in the town centre so fair enough. Our room was over the pub entrance and we were subject to the smoke and phlegmy coughs from drinkers standing in the doorway to smoke. Breakfast was basic. Our shower struggled to get past warm and when I politely mentioned this to the owner when leaving, thinking it would be helpful for him to know, I got the classic response "well no-one else has complained about it"! As if I travel round the country making up faults with hotels for a hobby? Our friends stayed at Brixham House which was cheaper and had very good breakfast.
Review 72:Central location.
Review 73:No hot water on arrival. No offer of help to carry bags Wasn't told about breakfast times (only served 8-9 on a Sunday!)so missed breakfast. Room smelled musty No signing in system Poor staff attitude. Bill had the wrong value on it. We didn't feel welcome, we didn't feel wanted. We won't be back and we won't recommend this.
Review 74:quaint place very close to centre of town
Review 75:The seagulls are very noisy during the night. Do they never sleep!
Review 76:The room was a good size .we had evening meal on the first night and breakfast was excellent.very good location to all Brixham has too offer. Unusual but they offer plates and cutlery on landing for use if you bring a take a way in.
Review 77:Does not look great from outside and you have to pay in public carpark for parking. But great rooms.Breakfast is served a little early.
Review 78:Great comfy rooms.Recently refurbed.Great breakfast
Review 79:There were a few reviews that bad mouthed this venue, which I thought were completly unwarranted. Its a very old building and as such, visitors should expect the same standards as a modern, newly built hotel. It is what it is. Hosts & staff were very friendly and helpful. We will most definitly stay there again.
Review 80:the room and hotel were very worn and in need of a full refubishment
