Archangel descritpion

Archangel was first recorded as an inn in 1311, with preserved ancient walls and beams. This medieval property offers a bar, restaurant and rooms with free WiFi.
The quirky bedrooms are decorated in deep, rich purples and golds and include lots of luxurious details. Some rooms are located in the courtyard and feature power showers rather than roll-top bath tubs. Facilities include a flat-screen TV, Bramley bath products, real tea and proper coffee with fresh milk.
The stunning restaurant, which features beamed ceilings and French windows opening onto the courtyard garden, offers exciting dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The stylish bar and adjoining lounge serve food throughout the day. The property hosts live music and cultural events.
Frome is a historic market town with cobbled streets and many listed buildings. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath city centre is a 25-minute drive from the Archangel.

Reviews for Archangel

Review 1:On arrival, the manager greeted us and showed us to reception, we were then upgraded for free from a large standard double to a large luxury double. Room was amazing with iron roll top bath! Décor was old worldly and beautiful. When first arriving the hotel looked disappointing but as soon as you walk through the door our opinion is changed. Truly beautiful. Food was lovely and staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again! And recommend!

Review 2:Only thing that we noticed was that the bath tap dripped and dripping onto a tin bath made a noise during the night but its only minor!

Review 3:The Hotel is stunning! we loved our feature room! breakfast is very nice and if in the area we would return.

Review 4:The lack of private parking and having to go out in the morning before breakfast to get a ticket for the car. Not expensive to do, but a bit of a nuisance * remember to have change with you for the carpark*! We were told that it was free (Yes, from 6pm-9am)

Review 5:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was of a very good standard, the level of cleanliness, size of the room etc. all very good.

Review 6:Phone wasn't working so had to go in search of a staff member to request a hairdryer which was missing. There were no bathrobes either. We discovered this after going down several times to find a hairdryer and couldn't be bothered to go down again (remember couldn't phone reception because phone wasn't working) The area around the bath was thick with dust as I discovered when I dropped the bath mat by mistake. Also the 24hr parking is not! We had to get up and be at the carpark by 9am to top up the amount.I know this is not the fault of the hotel but they shouldn't advertise it on their website.

Review 7:The staff were lovely when we found them! The ambience was lovely as was the excellent breakfast.

Review 8:Spent a lovely few nights here over New Year. Ended up going to the James Bond-themed event on the evening of 31st, which we hadn't originally intended. It was great fun! Breakfast was brought to us in bed the next morning.

Review 9:Breakfast service was iffy - tables sticky, had to ask twice for toast which appeared long after we had finished and was white not brown as ordered, had to ask for fruit juice to be replenished. Room was tiny, very warm and the soundproofing from next door non existent. Hipster sink that you couldn't fill a kettle at.

Review 10:Great location, friendly staff. Comfy bed. Nice cotton sheets. Quality toiletries. Good coffee in the room. The bar is excellent.,

Review 11:The room was freeeezing cold. There were two heaters in the room; one of them was just gushing out hot air smelling of burnt dust, until the room smelt smoky, so I turned it off. The other one just wasn't sufficient enough, so the room was very cold. Also, the noise from the rooms next to me. I could hear every word my neighbours said, so I didn't get much sleep.

Review 12:Very posh looking place; beautifully decorated. Plenty of tea and coffee and real milk; really appreciated. Very pretty little room.

Review 13:Staff were all welcoming and friendly. Bed extremely comfortable. The details meant we were very happy to have discovered Archangel. Highly recommended.

Review 14:My colleague had no hot water for his shower , when mentioned at check out there was no discount offered , even the most basic hotels should have hot water !

Review 15:I liked the design and ombience

Review 16:very noisy, unable to relax , due to noise from adjacent function room, right next to bedroom - unpleasant manager - very small room that didn't look like the one that we booked - in need of a lick of paint and a good clean!

Review 17:Comfortable bed - helpful bar and waiting staff

Review 18:The room was in the courtyard and very dark. No windows that you could see through and it was next to a leading bay so the noise began at 5.30 am.

Review 19:Very quirky. Friendly staff and great food.

Review 20:Paid extra for a better room, when we got there we realised the room door was downstairs in the bar/lounge area and room was directly above the noisy bar area.. Rowdy drunk guests were downstairs, which it was Halloween night so slightly understandable. I had a terrible nights sleep, bar didn't quiet down until around 1am and then I was woken at 7am by pigeons outside the window and the staff starting work and slamming doors etc. I feel our room was overpriced for what it was.

Review 21:Friendly staff, room was spacious and nicely decorated

Review 22:Very warm welcome from Ben. Beautiful room and facilities, even with the very creeky floorboards. Had a meal in the restaurant which was absolutely lovely. All staff so friendly and helpful.

Review 23:The parking situation was poor. The headroom in some of the room was low wouldn't be suitable for elderly visitors.

Review 24:Very comfortable stay and very friendly staff. A quirky hotel with bags of character.

Review 25:Friendly and helpful staff, beautiful building, the room was warming and well supplied, the evening meal was exceptional and the breakfast was of the same standard

Review 26:The double was broken and sunken on the left side. The z bed for kids was awful, couldn't even let my 7 yr old sleep on it as she wouldn't of slept as I didn't. Only stayed for one night so didn't complain. Wouldn't take kids with the bed arrangement. Food wasn't much good either.

Review 27:Really nice hotel, And breakfast was lovely Staff was very friendly

Review 28:We had a very comfortable stay at The Archangel - the rooms were modern, clean and comfy. The food in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast was delicious. Great options for the children too. The landlord was efficient, kind and friendly. An all round professional service. We will definitely visit again.

Review 29:Shower not draining. Told them about it and reply was they knew for a week but clearly hadn't sorted problem out. No parking facilities. Never gave invoice for stay despite repeated requests.

Review 30:Central location in frome

Review 31:No car park facilities Told them that the water in shower was slow to drain, the reply i got was yes we had the same problem last weekend - so why haven't they addressed it Printer not working, asked for an invoice to be sent by email 3 times and still nothing-shoddy

Review 32:Location Breakfast good

Review 33:If there had to be one complaint it would only be the parking facilities for disabled.

Review 34:Wow! We had an excellent stay here. The room was lovely. Staff were helpful kind & friendly.

Review 35:Car parking is round the back in the M & S carpark which is a nuisance in updating tickets. On your way into this carpark there is an area to the right hand side for parking which only charges £3.60 for the whole day. The hotel unfortunately did not tell us about that initially!

Review 36:The location was right in the centre of town and handy for everything. The room was very quirky and just the right size. The food was second to none and we had dinner there both nights we stayed!!!

Review 37:Having to beg to be moved into the room we thought we paid for, and the one they were advertising.Towel rail in bathroom not working.Noisy fridge in room.Lumpy beds not good. Damp smelling rooms. Needs updating. NO WIFI in rooms. Woken up at 5am by the shops and brewery truck deliveries outside in the street right near all the rooms. Several customer complaints in the morning. Staff seemed aloof.

Review 38:Good central location Good choice of breakfast, shame the cheap labour cannot cook the breakfast properly!

Review 39:Rooms are extremely small with very little ventilation or natural air. Quite noisy during the day as the entrance to the room was in the beer garden. Reception area not covered at all times so was difficult to get staff of bar was busy

Review 40:Nicely decorated rooms / bar area.

Review 41:The bedroom was very small but had everything required. Biggest issue was that there were no windows which could be opened. Not good on a warm summers night!

Review 42:The restaurant is fantastic. Great food and lovely space. Breakfast was also excellent. Hotel right in the centre of Frome - close to St Catherine Hill .

Review 43:The rooms are far too warm and the noise outside meant that we couldn't have the windo open unfortunately - didn't detract too much from a lovely stay though!

Review 44:The hotel itself was brill - very well refurbished with a lovely feel. Food in restaurant to die for!

Review 45:It's not a complaint, I had a dodgy back, the super soft bed didn't help me, but for anyone else with a tip top back you'll enjoy a good kip.

Review 46:Staff were epic, the room in the main building was awesome, highly recommend you stay here. Enjoyed some amazing food in the bar in the evening, ideal place to stay.

Review 47:At the level they are portraying with everything else there should have been a hairdryer in the room. But my only gripe.

Review 48:Service, breakfast, ice bucket with water and milk in in the bedroom, shower products, modern decor...

Review 49:Evening food not very tasty and felt neglected by staff at breakfast. Parking is an issue if you have heavy cases to pull up the roads to hotel.

Review 50:Great location in centre of town. Amazing bedroom. Helpful reception staff and manager. I forgot my phone charger and they posted it on.

Review 51:'Reception' was empty when we arrived with the full details of aprevious guest on view in a really untidy office. Then the manager gotdefensive when I was reluctant to fill in my details on a form. The roomwas a windowless dark 'cave' with no air con and the heatedtowel rail on full blast! When we requested to change rooms he saidthere were none available and anyway that is the 'level' of roomwe had booked. When I took off the blanket dressing the bed it had loadsof hair all over it which was quite unpleasant. We looked around Fromefor any alternative place to eat but there was nothing so decided to eatin the bar. Food was okay and so just paid the bill at the bar. After wereturned to room I thought bill was rather expensive so returned toquestion it. Was told that 10% 'discretionary' service chargehad been added automatically. The Manager said he couldn't refund itand anyway it was written on the bottom of all the menus. Clearly 10%had also been added to our drinks (which we bought at the bar where wewent to order our food). This was not waitress service! The final insultwas the Manager saying of course the 10% was for Staff tips and if Iliked he could give it back to me in cash out of their tips!! ObviouslyI wouldn't do that.

Review 52:Breakfast was reasonable. Quality of food in bar reasonable.

Review 53:Room bit claustrophobic. Looking out onto brick wall one side and Iceland car park the other. Iceland started deliveries at 6 in the morning and woke us up and continued on and off until 8.30. Lovely hotel and staff but would def not stay in that room again.

Review 54:The stairs to room 6, I have a sore back which did not grt any better. Loved the bath, didn't like the lack of a shower. One of the roof lights does not open

Review 55:The location is excellent, pity about the lack of parking. The whole ambience of the place was great, a lovely place to stay. The room, subject to the stairway

Review 56:The hotel is a gorgeous old building with a modern twist. Fabulous food especially breakfast. Staff were welcoming and friendly and the room was well stocked and clean. Lovely stay.

Review 57:The single room could have been cleaner especially the carpet and bedside table and the window needed pigeon deterrent spikes.

Review 58:Friendliness of staff and good location

Review 59:Unfortunately there is not a car park attached to the property, so we had to park in a nearby shop carpark. Also, the hotel is unstaffed from around midnight. I'm not sure if there was an event going on, but people were outside our room, in a communal area, being rather loud until 2:30am, so we did not get a lot of sleep.

Review 60:This hotel was lovely, the room was gorgeous and it felt like a really luxurious trip.

Review 61:Lack of ventilation, only one sash window that only opened about a foot at best..? A fan was provided in the room but mainly just blew the hot air around. WiFi signal was very weak.

Review 62:Location to where we wanted to be. Good breakfast.

Review 63:We were in room 5, right up in the attic. You would think upon arrival they would open windows knowing theres a heat wave and not have a feather duvet? We were both so hot we barely had more than 5 hours sleep. We stayed Saturday night and although we don't mind the music that blared until 1230/1 in the morning some warning wouldnt of gone a miss. The radio they provided didn't connect to anything nor did it connect to the phone cable, TV showed no screen just sound and 1 or 2 bed panels were missing under the bed causing our bums to sink down. Over all not impressed.

Review 64:The bath was absolutely amazing, and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. Also the decoration was lovely.

Review 65:Our room was a bit noisy at night as people were dining in the courtyard just outside. I reported a faulty shaving point in the shower room.

Review 66:The staff. The food was good too.

Review 67:Room was very hot and stuffy. Would benefit from air conditioning as the windows didn't open. Wifi a bit hit and miss but this is mentioned in the welcome pack

Review 68:Great location centre of town. Helpful friendly staff. All facilities available

Review 69:The only thing I can think to improve would be that the restaurant, being above the busy bar on a hot day, was very warm and would benefit from some fans.

Review 70:The design and facilities of the hotel were brilliant, as was the food, but what really made it into a great experience was the warm friendly service from the staff. P.s. my wife was very appreciative of the birthday card :-)

Review 71:Wi Fi inaccessible. Landlord not unfriendly but seemed a bit harassed and detached - not surprising maybe as hotel was very busy. Forgot about the steps downstairs into room and went flying on my return in the dark. No permanent injuries fortunately!

Review 72:The breakfast.

Review 73:Tasty mussel starter but the smallest mussels we have ever had. Still for those watching their weight you'd burn more calories getting them out of the shell! Great meal this aside.

Review 74:Pretty much everything

Review 75:Staff are great and very helpful and bent over backward to give great service. Room was beautiful. Bed was very comfy. Food served in restaurant was exceptional. Real good value for money, thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Review 76:Shower was over flowing after just a short time of being in there!

Review 77:The building and how quirky it was. Really cool place and definitely best in area. Room was comfortable

Review 78:Car park is a bit of a walk if it's raining

Review 79:Staff couldn't have been friendlier, very helpfully and professional, good food, good hotel, good beer, good staff, what more can you ask for!!!

Review 80:Everything about our stay was brilliant - the staff were helpful and friendly and recommended places to visit. They loved our dog too! Our room was lovely and the food we had for breakfast and dinner was delicious. We felt really well looked after and would definitely recommend The Archangel to family and friends.

Review 81:No shelves and no drawers in the bedrooms and hanging space partly occupied by the ironing board

Review 82:Frome, its shops, historical buildings and surroundings

Review 83:Traveling from Stonehenge to Bath, this rustic refurbished 1311 inn was the perfect spot for us to rest a night during our little historic holiday. The village itself is a quaint Medieval town with lots of vintage shops to check out. It's worth it to pay a little extra and get the nicer room at top with the iron bath tub in the room and plush bed. Ancient wood beams from the original structure are incorporated into the decor and complete the experience that feels that you've transported back to another time and place. The staff was cordial, the breakfast exquisite!

Review 84:Weather ;))

Review 85:Can you ask what I didnt like ??? I loved every thing !!! I am a very picky guest in hotels but this place killed me with value at first and entire place was just to good to be true !!;)

Review 86:It was quite noisy as our room was close to the bar, but it quietened down after 11 so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Review 87:Liked the whole ambience of the hotel, the staff were really helpful and the food was excellent. The roll top bath was amazing.

Review 88:A great stay

Review 89:Pleasant staff. Located in town centre but nice and quiet. Good value for money. Very comfortable bed, generous size bath and spacious room. Could not fault this place

Review 90:Being woken at 6am by delivery trucks unloading. Not all rooms are effected by this so just check on booking.

Review 91:Staff were friendly and professional. Crisp clean sheets and fluffy towels.

Review 92:The staff are a bit surly, no smiles, no welcome. The breakfast on a busy Sunday morning was not worth waiting 25 minutes for (after we flagged down a waitress to take our order) the poached eggs were hard boiled and the hollandaise probably the worse I have ever had. - Terrible middle class problems (; Just simple things that could make Archangel worth a stay...

Review 93:The location of the hotel is fantastic, right in the middle of quaint Frome, the huge copper bath was lovely! Ross the manager/owner kindly moved us to a 'quieter' room as we have a small baby, unfortunately the street noise on a Saturday night was quite loud!

Review 94:No shower in luxury room, just hand held over the bath, which you had to sit in to use, at 5'10" or taller this was tricky and sprayed all over the bedroom floor. It was a bank holiday so busy but a lot of food had run out for breakfast and dinner. Eggs florentine used rocket as no spinach left!

Review 95:Great quality food and friendly staff. Quirky design and full of character.

Review 96:Got noisy at night because of people in bar the courtyard. Breakfast wasn't good and we had to wait half an hour to be served.

Review 97:Decor and the location.

Review 98:We were visiting Longleat Safari Park on the Sunday so we stayed Saturday night. Perfect location for Longleat (only 10 min drive) and in a beautiful little village which was really pretty. Room was very cosy and comfortable, quite small but I feel that suited the style of the room and was everything we needed. We enjoyed a lovely meal in the restaurant Saturday night, the food and wine was excellent (we had the squid and the chicken terrine to start and then we both had steak) and service was spot on. Breakfast was also really good (small continental buffet available as well as hot breakfast from the menu). Overall a great stay with helpful, unobtrusive, professional service.

Review 99:Outside room was a bit noisy but this was explained and stopped shortly after 23:00. Food was a little over priced but was generally nice.

Review 100:Staff where excellent and helped us as best they could with a Wedding on! Great real ale. Location is great and a treat to find a farmers market running on the Sunday right outside the door!

Review 101:No sound proofing in rooms. Dreadful snoring above and no sleep. We stayed room 7. Wasn't that clean tbh. Tea mugs had stains. Not great. Fridge provided but very noisy. Food was ok though unsure why mound of rocket has to be placed on every dish. Could be so good. Would stay again but only at discount rate.

Review 102:Lovely building, friendly staff.

Review 103:Parking was in a public car park a few hundred yards away, but a small problem in the big picture.

Review 104:The staff went out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. When I could not decide between the Chocolate Brownie, Sticky Toffee or Panna Cotta the chef mademe up a trio - it was awesome!!

Review 105:Parking - the Archangel is in the middle of the town, so you have to use a public car park. The charges however, were very reasonable. We downloaded the Parking app and so extended the time from our room.

Review 106:The Archangels restaurant was superb. I recommend the locally sourced sauages. Our room came with breakfast, it was a generous size,we did not have to eat lunch. Our rooms were lovely, decorated very tastefully. Loved the Zinc roll top baths

Review 107:The hotel is beautiful with gorgeous decor and comfortable rooms with real character. The bar and restaurant area were also lovely and had great choice. The manager was very friendly and welcoming with recommendations for the local area which we really appreciated. A perfect place for a weekend break.

Review 108:No separate shower in ensuite. REALLY terrible pillows. Wifi didn't work. Needs attention to detail (as the paintwork was chipped etc.) which is unfortunate as the interior dècor is exceptional.

Review 109:Stunning spacious room with fabulous bath. Beautiful restaurant and bar with lovely seating areas. Delicious breakfast. Polite staff.

Review 110:The charge for the car park. Room service came when we were in the room and were polite to leave us be however they did not return later in the day as we returned to the same bedding and towels. Food was a tad over priced in the resturant but ok for a one off. The free wifi did not work. All in all it was a nice stay and would return.

Review 111:The bath in the room was fantastic, staff were friendly and happy to help. Hotel was well presented and very clean. Not too far from bath for shopping. Would recommend to many.

Review 112:No one tells you that this hotel is also an extremely popular bar that doesn't close till 2am in the morning. Don't get a courtyard room as this is where all the smokers are and we didn't get any sleep whatsoever in the end. The rooms were dirty - we had sick in the toilet from the previous night's guests and the cafetiere in the room hadn't been cleaned out from the last time it was used. All in all, a very disappointing and exhausting stay.

Review 113:The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was well cooked

Review 114:TV reception was poor, with a lot of pixellation.

Review 115:Lovely atmosphere, very pleasant young staff. Amazingly filling breakfast. The building itself is interesting and has been well-restored.

Review 116:- room was unclean - cups dirty, mirrors and shower doors messy - mould/damp growing inside wardrobe - missing toiletries , tissues - tv provided but absolutely no signal - so not usable - room was cold - fan heater provided in room full of dust - sat down for dinner at 9:20 on Saturday, waitress made us feel un welcome, refused to serve dessert as 'kitchen had closed at 9, your lucky to get dinner at all' - feel this was a massive let down - at the initial check in we were told that kitchen is open until 10 and also advertises this - room set in court yard at the back of a bar - smokers gathered outside the room

Review 117:Location - short drive to bath and cheddar gorge

Review 118:All Reception areas were grubby including glasses and crockery & courtyard full of cig butts. The room we were given was In the courtyard and only access was up a metal spiral staircase & wooden deck both of which were slippery when wet. No Internet in our room.

Review 119:Sleep difficult as background piped music from public rooms below our room was left on all night - probably someone forgot to turn it off.

Review 120:Quirky but comfortable room

Review 121:Room was dusty with suitcase covered in fluff after being on the floor of room. TV too small for size of room (hard to see from the bed) decor a bit tired which was disappointing considering the price being paid.

Review 122:large comfortable room with roll top tub in room (some bubble bath would have been great). Quiet room considering central location. Lovely breakfast. Great reastuarant serving good food. Very welcoming and helpful staff.

Review 123:Saturday night was rather noisy!

Review 124:Staff were amazing, really could not have done more for us. Also very welcoming to our dog who was made a massive fuss of and loved his stay as much as we did! Decor is inredibly cool, bar very well stocked with a fine selection of real ales, beer, cider and spirits (plus excellent cocktails) and the food in the restaurant was stunning.

Review 125:Contrasting food offering and lack of staff training, champagne was served in a wine glass and poured to leave it flat. The plates were hotter than the food, the staff on check out were tardy. Do stay, don't eat.

Review 126:Room number 5 is beautiful Lovely interiors Stylish Good breakfast

Review 127:Odd check in process, wasn't sure where reception was, when I found someone she left me standing outside the office door unsure what to do?

Review 128:The great room, with tin/pewter bath, roll top bed and archangel on the wall!

Review 129:room two shower definataly not for large or elderly folk! no night staff for emergencies.

Review 130:friendly , very helpfull staff. very good food. good location for coach travell.

Review 131:Everyone's commented on the parking, not a problem if 'front of house'.. ie barperson/ concierge/.. tells one where to park.. Courtyard bedrooms a nightmare if you want some sleep.. Check-in was a little 'Fawlty'..no offer of newspaper.. TV didn't work.. Breakfast service was slapdash.. Chef/Landlord is wonderful, but let down woefully by his staff, IMHO. I won't go on.. I want to love this place, but it has to figure itself out..management needs to also..

Review 132:Food & Drink service in the bar was excellent, outside courtyard was lovely & lively. 4 **** Dinner of Beignets & Guinea Fowl. Room was OK but needing some tlc. Read on..

Review 133:WiFi was a bit dodgy. Frome itself, doesn't have much else going on.

Review 134:Excellent staff and food was amazing. Building had character, was a little noisy at night but nothing unbearable.

Review 135:Our room was in the courtyard and we were woken very early every morning when deliveries arrived in the car park backing on to the block for the shops next door.

Review 136:The location was very good. The staff very friendly and helpful.

The Fine Print
