Reviews for Hôtel Les Chevaliers
Review 1:The recommended nearby car park was unfortunately occupied with a Christmas market! There was nowhere to hang up coats or clothes in the room.
Review 2:Charming building and location. Staff really helpful and friendly.
Review 3:Common area furnishing are really tired, bed was horrible. This place has potential, but needs updating
Review 4:Very welcoming, friendly staff, room was attractive
Review 5:Lots of stairs to the bedrooms, although this is more a reflection of our age than a criticism of the hotel!
Review 6:Lovely old building in the heart of the historic old part of Laon and just a stone's throw from one of France's finest Gothic cathedrals. Very helpful, friendly staff. Nice rooms and a good breakfast (at extra cost).
Review 7:Laon was unjustifiably dead. The old town is really attractive but seemingly avoided by tourists.
Review 8:Very friendly guys running the hotel. Yes, it's somewhat run-down, but it has charm.
Review 9:We have enjoyed a special atmosphere in this very old house located at the very center of this medieval town. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast, parking nearby. The only problem was a poor WiFi on the second floor, although, the reception was good downstairs in the lobby.
Review 10:Our room had no storage space - but as we only stayed one night it didn't bother us.
Review 11:Very helpful staff, and good volume of items at breakfast. Lovely relaxing atmosphere.
Review 12:Ancient building undergoing a sympathetic long term renovation which allows you to overlook areas that have still to be worked through. Charming, clean and comfortable room and ensuite, great continental breakfast in pleasant surroundings, outstanding welcome and service from the owners.
Review 13:Shower was falling apart, WiFi did not work in the room and the bed was not comfortable.
Review 14:Great location in the middle of Laon. The guy running the hotel was extremely friendly and helpful
Review 15:Grubby torn stair carpet! Bedrooms very shabby and short of cupboards and surfaces. Bed headboard not attached!
Review 16:Young manager extremely helpful. We think the hotel was partly refurbished: The bathroom suite and fluffy towels, all lovely and clean but an interesting peeling ceiling! My room had super view, I felt like Rapunzel!. Most rooms seemed not to have a view. A characterful hotel with a lot of heavy dark furniture but nice subtle lighting. Super old hilltop town with cathedral.
Review 17:Breakfast choice was a little limited but plentiful.
Review 18:Central location, friendly staff, surprisingly atmospheric area. We booked as an overnight through France so didn't expect much. Would've stayed longer and will stay again.
Review 19:I had a room at the front and as it was hot had the window open. This was a bit noisy early in the morning as the street is very narrow.
Review 20:The location is excellent for the old part of the town. Nice decor.
Review 21:Slightly shabby stairways and landing carpets.
Review 22:The host was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel was close to the cathedral and nice restaurants. Breakfast was plentiful. Very historic hotel.
Review 23:Matthieu, my host, was very attentive and helpful. In particular he saw I was struggling to identify the hotel parking area (which is difficult to spot) and then helped me to reverse into it (which would otherwise have been very difficult). He also recommended a highly suitable nearby brasserie where I had a very good value meal and a beer. At the hotel, I liked the mixture of old (indeed original building fabric) and modern conditions.
Review 24:A fascinating 12th century building and enjoyed talking to the owner about his developments so far. He was so helpful. Nothing was any trouble. Free off road parking. Excellent traditional restaurant just 2 minutes' walk away.
Review 25:No on-site parking, we were lucky as the town square has free parking from sat evening until mon morning.
Review 26:Carefully restored hotel in centre of historic town run by friendly couple
Review 27:Great location, fantastic staff, very nice room, delicious plentiful breakfast an amazing value - don't be put off by the reception area - this needs decorating, but the room we had had been tastefully refurbished and was very nice indeed
Review 28:Booked thru booking.com and confirmation stated hairdryer, wardrobe, telephone etc but none of these items in our room, no where to put any clothes so glad only staying for 1 night.
Review 29:Very friendly and helpful man on reception on arrival, ugly building from outside but full of character and history inside.
Review 30:Wifi did not work in my room (11) because of thick medieval walls etc. I just used downstairs...
Review 31:Staff, room, location Town is well worth a visit and a good overnight stop heading south from uk
Review 32:The hotel is in need of updating . The car park is close by but it is paid parking.
Review 33:The hotel is centrally located in the heart of old Laon. The man who registered our arrival was friendly and helpful.
Review 34:The bed was very uncomfortable - this was the only fault, but a big one unfortunately. I would come back to this hotel again without reservation, if it had not been for the bed. I did not sleep well.
Review 35:Everything was great - location, friendly and helpful staff, cute room, quiet.
Review 36:No complaints at all.
Review 37:The host at the hotel was absolutely fantastic; friendly, knowledgable and accommodating with excellent English. It makes such a difference to get a warm welcome even though we were just passing through for one night. Hotel is brilliantly located right in the heart of the old town of Laon, a stone's throw from the cathedral. Room was comfortable and clean. Reception also provided us with a WiFi booster which meant we had a fantastic connection! Just sad we couldn't stay a bit longer.
Review 38:Very friendly welcome. Hotel is situated in the heart of the old city of Laon. A lot of old fixtures and fittings in the hotel. Excellent coffee; breakfast good value for money.
Review 39:All the shortcomings of mediaeval location, like shortage of money and the rather precipitate climb to the bedroom; otherwise, okay.
Review 40:A mediaeval hotel in a mediaeval city
Review 41:I would guess that the owner is in the process of gradually refurbishing the hotel. It doesn't look particularly prepossessing from the outside, which it would be difficult to do much about, but the stairway as far as the first floor is badly in need of renewal of floor and wall coverings - this first real impression of the interior is off-putting.
Review 42:We had a pleasant, quiet room with a good bathroom with newish modern fittings in generally good condition. Standard of cleanliness was high. The young man who dealt with us (the owner?) was extremely pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was simple but good. Overall was good value.
Review 43:Accommodation had character and charm but limited modern comfort (e.g. old 'shabby chic' furniture; hand-held shower over bath). Wi-Fi connection was unreliable in our room.
Review 44:Very friendly and helpful young patron. Perfect location. Old French charm. Good view from bedroom. Good (French - i.e. juice, tea/coffee, bread & croissants with jam) breakfast.
Review 45:The entrance and ground floor looks a little tired but this is compensated for by the friendly welcome and the cleanliness of the bedroom. Don't be put off.
Review 46:Good value for money and perfect for an overnight stop.
Review 47:1. The care taken by the gentleman at reception. He stored our cheese overnight in his fridge, re-froze the cooling block and gave us good, fresh coffee at 06:45 - almost an hour earlier than "official" breakfast. 2. The careful restoration of the hotel - our room on the second floor was beautifully done - all modern conveniences but original beams and wall. 3. The location.
Review 48:The smell of stale cigarette smoke was overpowering. Our bedroom needed redecorating.
Review 49:Friendly helpful staff. We were given a guide to a local excellent restaurant. Estaminet St.Jean
Review 50:The ground floor is really dated and needs refurbishing - it's like a hotel of 2 halves.
Review 51:The top 2 floors of the hotel are beautiful; the antique spiral staircase and exposed stone are gorgeous. The room was lovely and big and the bathroom was modern and clean.
Review 52:It is an old building. And yes, you will notice that. But the bed- and bathrooms are fine, staff is very friendly and helpful, breakfast very good and Laon a lovely place.
Review 53:Parking was tricky in small courtyard but payable local parking was also available. Wifi was very slow.
Review 54:Very friendly welcome with good local info. Location was excellent a few minutes walk from the cathedral and lots of restaurants.
Review 55:Breakfast could have been more extensive, room a few hooks to hang things up, shower needed some TLC but this is nit picking.
Review 56:Location is unbeatable and this is a proper slight rough edges French hotel at a Budget price with so much character. Really helpful English speaking staff. Where else can you wake up looking at turrets out of the window? Recommended if you can live with a rough edges, if you cant live with that book a Campanile.
Review 57:Nothing
Review 58:Imaginatively furnished and designed, beautiful setting/view (of part of the monastery). The young man in charge was extremely helpful and friendly, while carrying out his fatherly duties to his toddler son. OK, so the stair carpet was worn in places, and the paint on the bathroom ceiling was peeling, but who cares? The room was warm, comfortable and very nicely turned out, the hotel itself is in the historic centre, and I would have been only too happy to stay longer. (The following night I stayed in a Great Western elsewhere in Europe for about 50 Euros more and all I got was a slightly bigger breakfast, but a much more functional, characterless room.) I intend to stay here again as soon as the opportunity arises.
Review 59:Breakfast has become costly for what is provided - bread, croissant & jams, T & C....
Review 60:Charming & helpful patron, cosy warm room with elements of 15C timber and walls. Good modern bathroom, secure parking available. Brasserie on nearby square has good atmosphere & food, also nearby Moroccan for tagine and cous cous excellent!
Review 61:We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Les Chevaliers. We were welcomed by a very friendly helpful owner Our room 11 had lovely old brick features with exposed beams from 18th century and was impeccably clean. After a good nights sleep we had a very good continental breakfast with some of the biggest croissants we have ever had . Fresh Coffee was available with numerous refills. Following breakfast we were given a short history lesson on the subterranean levels of Laon. We shall have to return to do the tour. We loved all the old features of the hotel which the owner is gradually restoring. We highly recommend the hotel. Laon oozes charm, has character and the most beautiful gothic cathedral. There is a very good tourist office near the cathedral. Isabelle and Mark
Review 62:Just add blackout linings to the curtains, and it is PERFECT! Two excellent bar/restaurants in the square right by hotel as well. Car park (public) is right by hotel and is free to tourists!!!
Review 63:Everything!!
Review 64:Signage to find the route to the centre and to the hotel was very poor.
Review 65:Our visit coincided with a big cycle event. The manager was very helpful in sorting out where we could park.
Review 66:If you are expecting a 5* modern luxury hotel this isn't it. If you want somewhere full of character adorned with period features and 2 mins walk from the town centre then this is it.
Review 67:Location Character Friendliness of staff
Review 68:The foyer and entrance wasn't as nice as the photos depict.
Review 69:Very friendly and helpful staff. We had one of the new rooms which was very nice. Central location.
Review 70:Breakfast was delayed and there was no housekeeping on one day because the staff didn't arrive.
Review 71:Attentive staff. Excellent value for money. Centrally located near the cathedral and the POMA station. Good value continental breakfast which set us up for the day. The rooms overlooking the street can be noisy, but what do you expect in a town centre hotel?
Review 72:Internally the hotel is still a work in progress and quite a lot more needs to be done.
Review 73:Lovely location in a pretty little town. Very warm welcome. Quite basic but it worked as a stop over and we slept well.
Review 74:Needs hanging space in the bedroom and towel hooks in the bathroom. A hairdryer would also be a welcome addition. Parking is very limited but there is a public carpark only about 100m away.
Review 75:The hotel is centrally located in the old town high up on the ridge and close to the cathedral. It is owned by a charming young couple who are putting everything into making this a lovely hotel with, eventually, an adjoining salon de the. They are renovating this ancient building very sympathetically and with some quirky additions. The breakfast was excellent and well priced.
Review 76:Difficult to find as the sign outside it just says hotel but no name so you could easily drive past it. Use a sat nav
Review 77:Very helpful staff and a lovely quirky room. It's a great place to stay to see the city. Very welcoming. Good restaurants within walking distance and parking close by.
Review 78:Nowhere convenient to unload or park. The party that went on in an adjoining house all night below our window. The scruffiness of the entrance and first floor - I understand they are due to be done up like the top floor.
Review 79:The location The helpful staff The way the top floor of the hotel (where our room was) had been done up Comfortable, fair sized bedroom
Review 80:Bed was not that comfortable, but i was the only one out of the 4 of us in a family room who had that view
Review 81:Fantastic location and very friendly staff at this local hotel which has lots of charm.
Review 82:Smelly bathroom that needed a good scrub. New towels would have beengood as they looked like rags. The building was very old and the floorwas on a slant and so was the bed. Felt like I needed to hold on to stopfalling off the bed. There was no sound proofing so when other guestscame you thought they were in your room it was so loud. Wifi really onlyworks in the reception so no good being 2 storeys up. The worst stayI've ever had anywhere.
Review 83:Helpful staff and central location.
Review 84:Unfortunately there was no-one around for breakfast at 0730 the next day. The cleaning lady arrived at 8 but could locate the breakfast staff. We left without breakfast at 0815. Wifi did not work; several light bulbs did not work.
Review 85:The receptionist was extremely helpful and pleasant. Nice view from room 6
Review 86:Without ruining its quirky character the hotel could do with some TLC
Review 87:Location is excellent. Close to main historical attractions of Laon and to some good restaurants. The hotel occupies an ancient and slightly quirky building
Review 88:Beds could have been more comfortable – could feel a spring on one of the matresses.
Review 89:Friendly welcome Nice rustic decor Good size room for our family
Review 90:Nowhere to hang clothes but OK for one night
Review 91:Location is fantastic for access to the old city and restaurants. Historic building. Friendly helpful staff. Great breakfast. Free WiFi. Comfortable bed and clean bathroom. Easy online booking and very good value. Car parking in the adjacent square.
Review 92:It would have been nice to be able to check in a little earlier after a long ride in appalling weather! Not a problem for us with the bike but be aware that with a car the hotel is reliant on a public car park a few metres away, there is no on street parking
Review 93:Location couldn't be better for exploring the old town, genuine and friendly welcome, typical old French hotel, decor a little rough around the edges but all part of the charm. Room was clean, bathroom was fine, parking kindly provided for our motorcycle, breakfast was typical French fare (bread, croissant juice, tea/coffee etc). We were very satisfied with our stay.
Review 94:The shower attachment over the bath was hand held would have been better if it could have been attached to the wall.
Review 95:We had a good sized simply furnished room with a modern bathroom. Good location close to main attractions and resturants. Parking is close by which is not charged overnight or on Sundays but is charged between 9.00 and 12.00 and 14.00 and 18.00
Review 96:The room was very small and there was nowhere to hang clothes so I would not recommend the hotel for a longer stay. There was an extra charge for the breakfast.
Review 97:The hotel is ideal for someone travelling and looking for a one-night stay. The room was clean and the receptionist was very friendly.
Review 98:Hotel in process of being renovated at the moment but sure it will be good when finished. ThisHotel wastricyto find due to one way system.
Review 99:Staff very friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Location good with plenty of places to eat.
Review 100:Dark and unwelcoming reception area. Scruffy carpeting in reception and 1st floor. A variety of quite unpleasant odours. Laon seems to have gone downhill since I last visited 20 years ago.
Review 101:Good location Friendly and helpful manager Modern decor in room Comfy bed Quiet
Review 102:Reception and public area were scruffy with blankets over wornout couches and dangerous carpet on the stairs to the first floor.
Review 103:Good location and pleasant staff. Rooms were reasonably furnished. Location was convenient.
Review 104:Lack of attention to detail - I know the building is old but the paint was peeling from the ceiling in our bathroom (as it was when in same room 6 in October!!) 3 light bulbs needed replacing and the bed head was not attached to bed and hit the wall each time we moved in bed!! Small things that would not take much to correct.
Review 105:Helpful friendly staff; excellent location; quiet; fresh, tasty breakfast. Rooms basic but clean and comfortable
Review 106:Leaving.
Review 107:The stairs, the room, the welcome, the atmosphere, the position in the city, the enthusiasm and warmth of the young proprietor, and the fact that it was a proper traditional French establishment, not just another international stop-over block.
Review 108:Mattress thin/hard. Much work still to do to renovate hotel fully
Review 109:Good location and nice owner. Hotel historic and quirky
Review 110:Top floor but lovely staircase!
Review 111:Pleasant welcome and good accommodation; room divided into two; didn't try breakfast.
Review 112:Bathroom door didn't close quite properly though this was no problem for us.
Review 113:Very friendly welcoming staff.
Review 114:The location was very convenient.
Review 115:beautifully renovated and the staff gave a good insight into the town's history and current state.
Review 116:Needed a paint job and updating
Review 117:Location
Review 118:Nothing wrong at all.
Review 119:Great location, fantastic staff, lovely rooms and breakfast.
Review 120:The owner was lovely, so friendly and welcoming. He spoke excellent english. Our rooms were lovely, on the top floor.Breakfast was great.
Review 121:Friendly welcome Breakfast- simple but excellent
Review 122:Hotel shut until 4pm - far too late. Also I was located up 43 stairs - far too many!
Review 123:Close to cathedral
Review 124:Character of hotel and location.
Review 125:simple and clean although a little small
Review 126:indifferent breakfast, no lift
Review 127:clean and characterful hotel, friendly welcome, good location in old town centre
Review 128:bed was pretty hard
Review 129:Lovely authentic decor, good size, lovely new shower room, quiet and comfy
Review 130:perfect location in hte town centre with free parking space. Friendly staff..
Review 131:Great location with a lot of restaurants in walking distance. Very quiet
Review 132:Downstairs in need of updating
