Reviews for The Parkbury Hotel

Review 1:In our first room the radiators were cold and there was no hot water. After our second trip to reception one and a half hours after we first went to complain we did get transferred to a much better room. However the water was scalding and the cold water trickled out of the tap.

Review 2:The hotel was in a convenient place for our trip and fairly priced.

Review 3:The shower did not work very well and went cold. We would have to pay extra on the breakfast for 2 hot chocolates. The booking did not match the rooms given. 1 Double and 2 Twins booked. A family room given which 1 Twin and 1 Double given. 1 Twin room not used but could not offer a refund.

Review 4:The rooms were very clean. The location very good for our needs. We checked in 1 hour early. The bed was comfortable.

Review 5:When I was shown to my room the lights didn't work and that happened twice more . The first day no hot water . And at night the room was very cold but I used the 2 blankets which were in the wardrobe ,

Review 6:We were made very welcome ,we couldn't fault the service .

Review 7:Did not get four poster room that I booked for romantic break. Misleading advertising promising ferry crossing discount. Limited to only one port and only really worth anything at high season.

Review 8:Old world charm and good English breakfast for very reasonable cost.

Review 9:Dirty and dated. Ferry discount not given despite asking several timesfor details. Other guests also complaining about lack of discount.Carpet in room worn + stained. The pattern of floor boards was visiblecarpet had worn so thin. Shower grouting dirty. Fabric stool withdressing table filthy. Dining rood carpet filthy. Cigarette burn onbedroom carpet. Coffee stain on bedside cabinet. I like old fashionedbut not when it is dirty and worn out. Wall tiles blown from toiletwall. No meat in breakfast sausages. As a previous reviewer said -''camp!!''

Review 10:So relaxing, like 'home-from-home'. Smashing staff, do anything for you, if they can. Love the nautical theme, so unusual and unique. One day, I guess hotels like the Parkbury, will be no more, then we get, no choice, but, the 'likes' of 'Premier-inns', god-forbid, 'antiseptic-rabbit-hutches'?, it will be a sad day?.(Plastic-people, no-doubt, will 'love them'?).

Review 11:food bad frozen food cold windows in first room window broken 2nd room no heating only oil fired radiator that did not give out much heat first kettle dangerous base didnt fit kettle second kettle didnt boil unless held down kettle came on auto middle of night no hot water shower didnt work properly unable to shower dirty towels left on floor for replacing returned to cold towel rail for reuse breakfast yuk Like stepping back to early 1950's with notes all over hotel telling clients what to do and not do and threatening large fines if not complied with Would be careful about using bookings.com again after what has been in the past to us a good site for finding accommodation

Review 12:staff

Review 13:The paintwork was filthy, cobwebs down the wall and black mould in the corner and there was an unpleasant smell on the way to the room and in the bathroom the shower curtain was black at the bottom and mould was alround he shower cubicle, the small dining room had a metal strip hanging down the door sticking out into the room could easily have tripped over it. Room 30

Review 14:The staff and the food was good

Review 15:Room was not cleaned properly, picking up long hairs on feet, bathroom was horrible and decrepit needs to be updated. Breakfast service slow 2nd morning - had to ask to receive our breakfast. having to leave room key at reception for day. No evening entertainment or facilities except for a group who had booked through an agency

Review 16:The quirkiness of the hotel and rooms was great, with an excellent rate for the room per night. Bed was extremely comfortable, nice view of the front gardens from window. 10 minute walk from beach. Staff were friendly and helpful

Review 17:The room was not suitable for a disabled guest. The beds were soft and lumpy, the toilet was not raised and the disabled person had to be pulled off. There was a huge crack in the bathroom ceiling. The young couple, on honeymoon were in tears and had to be relocated. The hotel still charged for a nights stay.

Review 18:The shower was terrible. The water would run cold and then boiling hot. Also we arrived at 7:50pm and asked to have dinner only to be told the restaurant was closed. It was supposed to close st 8!

Review 19:Breakfast was good. Hotel was good value for money.

Review 20:The décor needed and needs revitalizing

Review 21:Staff made this hotel very welcoming, accommodating and professional The building and surrounds are lovely Good maritime theme

Review 22:I loved everything.

Review 23:Clean and quiet hotel with a touch of history. I had a single room. It has a simple and tasteful decoration and furniture. My bed was very comfortable and clean.

Review 24:We booked a double room but it had 2 single beds pushed together, so we asked to move and they offered us a family room with a small double bed in it. The beds were uncomfortable and The deco is very outdated.

Review 25:Location was great, easy to get around

Review 26:Extremely squeaky floor in my room. Bathroom... require renovation, just a little bit

Review 27:Quiet place, good location (for me at least), perfect interior in public areas, friendly and helpful staff

Review 28:The TV in the room was tiny, given the size of the room which was generous, the TV could have been bigger, the car park is the wrong end of the hotel, when checking in its a bit of a hike to reception

Review 29:The staff and restaurant were excellent, the bed was big and extremely comfortable, we had a great stay and the price was very good too

Review 30:We were two couples travelling together. When we checked in we got our keys and then the check in staff member came up to us in the passage and said the one room was not made up and handed one couple another room key This room was not a double as requested but a twin! We booked well in advance and as we were in a hurry to get to our restaurant before they closed did not have time to complain Rather shoddy and no explanation or indeed any kind of apology was offered. The second room was also not really up to scratch -dent in the stay!

Review 31:Staff was very friendly and very helpful

Review 32:Had originally booked 2 rooms was given a family room and refused refund for second room no hot water decor very anti quainted breakfast £5 and was a rip off

Review 33:dated decor, bed a little uncomfortable and too hot in the room during the night.

Review 34:close to where I needed to be. cheap and included breakfast with good choice of food

Review 35:Just small cristism the hotel could do with a lick of paint but nothing major! And possibly bear in mind of people with gluten free allergies, maybe keep some gluten free bread in the freezer,so they can have toast!also offer mushrooms instead of harsh brown's I.e. Wheat!

Review 36:The staff were very friendly, the breakfast was lovely, plenty to choose from, the room was basic but worth the money, hotel was beautiful, had loads of character, the shops, seafront, various restaurants and bus stops were very accessible, parking even though we didn't manage to get a space in the hotel carpark was absolutely fine, although I do wander how it would be during the week when the school next door is open but we would definitely stay again

Review 37:problem with registration of our rooms 3 on the first night, 2 on the second night ), the ass manager made a mistake in the rooms so on day 2 the rooms weren't cleaned up. Very pore internetconnection Recieved no invoice

Review 38:Free parking, location, the hotel itself

Review 39:Booked a double room it was 2 singles pushed together and mattress was thin could feel the base of the bed. Shower was not located in an ideal area on the wall

Review 40:Staff friendly and welcoming

Review 41:Breakfast times were short and when needing to leave before 8 am we could not have breakfast before even though the chef and staff were there. Hotel needs updating ...

Review 42:Location and parking facilities .. Access at all times to hotel

Review 43:The hotel is very dated and run down The bedroom furniture was broken and the carpet filthy. The cold water tap on the bath did not work a d the showed difficult to adjust the temperature setting, the sink was cracked how ever the sheets were clean and the bed not to bad.the were no lifts so anyone with mobility problems would have difficulty.

Review 44:The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Review 45:the room was said to be ready but the sheets had not been changed and the previous guests towels were left folded as they were still wet. The manager was very quick to correct this. Our friends with us had no power in their room until the following day

Review 46:Location to Sandown town centre

Review 47:Toilet filthy bathroom disgusting mould on walls dried blood on sheets. Towels dirty. All photographed. Food greasy and left uncovered.Complained via email no response from company

Review 48:Staff tried to compensate for a truly disgusting hotel

Review 49:1. Did not get room we booked (4 poster) 2. Room small & shower was tiny. 3. Only soap in toilet, no plastic/glass for toothbrush, no shampoo etc. 4. 40+ rooms but only parking for 10 cars 5. Very basic 6. Bar only opened at 5pm-no atmosphere 7. Appeared to be lack of staff

Review 50:Bar and reception were often left unmanned for long periods of time. Room was cold and radiator did not work. Booked 2 rooms and they were on opposite sides of the hotel.

Review 51:Staff were friendly and helpful when available.

Review 52:bed mattress strained, mattress springs knackered so sinks in the middle. no shower just hose, cut my finger trying to reach washing,so had to kneel down to wash. water burns you to the point it took 1 and half hours for bath water to cool down.hand towels to try yourself with after washing not bath towels or bath sheets. breakfast cold and dry with child portions, dirty tablecloths dark, dingy, dated inside poor bar service, one person in the entire building giving service to customers..unhelpful service, their answer "it is what it is !!! part of the grand hotel chain" their reply. whilst you are standing there having burnt yourself in shower and cut your finger asking to be moved and complaining. all this is such a shame because the outside is a beautiful building, just neglected and poorly ran inside. .

Review 53:most of the staff needed a boot up there bum as they were very vacant, the wifi did not exist, the bar was poorly run and the breakfast was served on a tea plate

Review 54:The place was very clean and Samantha made us feel very welcome

Review 55:Shower didn't work very well, door locked itself, had to get out through the window on fire escape

Review 56:Friendliness of staff , very helpful. Nice grounds nicely situated.

Review 57:There was only one person who had to look after the reception & the bar at the same time

Review 58:The staff were very polite & would help make your stay as good as possible

Review 59:The beds need an overhaul. Hearing next door having a wee! made me laugh. Breakfast needed to be kept an eye on as cereals/fruit and milk had run out.

Review 60:The staff were extremely polite and helpful.I hope they all get the recognition that they deserve. I would like to say thank you to them all. The evening staff were especially good. Nice cooked breakfast. Good location. Very peaceful at night.

Review 61:Weather was wet and towels didn't get changed so we're wet for 5 days/4 nights. Didn't eat at the hotel because the times for food were very limited

Review 62:The hotel served it's purpose as a bed and shower

Review 63:It is a shame that this hotel, which is so very nice downstairs, has notset the guest accommodation at the same level, the room is very poorlyequipped, cheap bed and mattress,no storage for a large suitcase, leftours in the entrance jammed against the wardrobe, the breakfast waswoefully inadequate for a big lad,the bar had a limited amount ofbeer/drinks available when it was open, the drinks prices were okthough, key security is a joke, needs a big improvement, went to collectours after a morning out,it was with the cleaners, that was ok but theroom had been left unlocked for anybody who wanted to enter, the wholeexperience of this Hotel, that is there description, leaves a lot to bedesired,I have stayed in cheaper, better, places with more guestcomforts than this place can offer, and as you can expect from myreview, would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone, and beforeyou say why did I not complain while I was visiting, you are supplyingwhat you think is acceptable so you should accept the criticism when itdoes not meet your customers expected standards, yoursdisapointedly,Kevin h Callanan

Review 64:The staff, all three of them, were great

Review 65:Advertised entertainment which my mum likes, but turns out they only have it when there is a coach party in. Booked a room with walk in showers but non available, this was fine as only there for 2 nights ,would have been a problem any longer we could have used the shower in the sauna though .Dinner was lovely but no prices on the menue and no wine list.

Review 66:The style of the hotel which was themed like an old passenger liner rooms were called cabins and and staff areas were for crew only also loads of memorabilia but tastfully done was lovely. Gardens are very pretty to sit out on a summy day and there is a sauna.Staff were very friendly a bit haphazard but that just added to the stay as we all laughed about it.

Review 67:the parking was a problem i did book a parking spot but had to double park on both nights of my stay

Review 68:i liked the location and the decor of the hotel.the price i paid was adyquit for the room and on suite faccilitys. i would deffinitly come again.i came this time with 2 of my grandchildren and will hopfuly return.

Review 69:Very dated some staff miserable had a problem with bookings I wasn't listened to very well and am still owed money iny opinion u go on holiday to Destressed not stress more

Review 70:I loved the deputy manager very happy and lovely smiling and very helpful

Review 71:Old fashion, smelly, disappointed "hotel", with poor wifi, no proper shower, boiled water without any alert. Discusting carpet, poor breakfast, lack of phone, tiny tv. Really not happy!

Review 72:Location only

Review 73:Rooms need a little update. Slightly disorganised at breakfast.

Review 74:The look & grounds of the hotel were lovely. The rooms were quaint, it had a lot of facilities.

Review 75:The wifi was only in the lounge and thus so it got very busy at times. In this day and age wifi should be offered throughout the building. More suited for older generation, decor dated and could do with a little tlc. No pool as stated in hotel literature, disappointing.

Review 76:The staff were brilliant. Pretty gardens

Review 77:Car parking. Car park was full, struggled to find somewere to park, wooden bed creeked loudly every time you moved.

Review 78:Liked that you displayed names on tables, food was good.

Review 79:Don't expect the luxury of a travel lodge.. This hotel is classic. Its retro 70's / 80s inspired decor and single glazing take you back to another era.. However that being said for a couple of nights the hotel was pleasent enough and had some old world charm.

Review 80:Location was 10 mins walk from the beach, and had we had good weather would have been ideal.

Review 81:Lack of evening entertainment. Not enough staff. Had to search for a bartender.

Review 82:Only a short walk to the beach. Easily located for day trips around the island.

Review 83:Just water too hot and not signed as such. Could injure some one.

Review 84:Excellent 4 poster room. Lovely old fashioned style. Food not brilliant but we eat out normally anyway. Lovely garden setting. Staff polite and helpful.

Review 85:Nothing much except breakfast service needs bit of varieties!

Review 86:Felt so great to stay in this antique place ... well kept and maintained gorgeous accommodation! Would definitely consider staying in there again.

Review 87:We couldn't get a Wi-fi connection and I found the choice of beer disappointing. I believe that a bitter from a local brewer would be a better offering than John Smith's - but that's down to taste!

Review 88:The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 89:Parking hard to find. I was not informed of whether there was WiFi, phoned before to get assistance with ferry crossing and discount advertised, however, nobody replied to e-mail or telephone call to arrange this as promised, so I never benefitted from the discount. .

Review 90:The hotel is in a very good location, was clean and staff was friendly, did their best to accommodate special requests

Review 91:the hotel could be great if it was decorated up to modern standards, parking was a little strange as car park on opposite side of building to main entrance, making walking round with luggage a little awkward

Review 92:staff very friendly and hard working, a little to busy at times sometimes lack of staff was apparent when trying to collect your room key in the evening

Review 93:One of the beds was really hard - there were 2 couples and one single person with us. Shower had no pressure and on first morning no hot watr.

Review 94:Friendly staff, breakfast good. Ideally positioned for our visit base.

Review 95:nothing that was a major dislike. but just to put something. no daily top up of milk in room. no shower gel. you can get them if you ask i believe.

Review 96:fair price for what you get. plenty of seating areas.convenient for local amenities.

Review 97:The hotel offered wifi but there was nowhere in the hotel that you couldpick it up. So we were not able to plan our days or even check theweather. With 2 teenage children this was a big factor as to why wewould not stay there again.

Review 98:A good base to use but nothing more there to entice you to stay on site.

Review 99:To be honest bit difficult to find main entrance to the building? as was locked at one door had to walk round through the bar entrance some staff didnt seem very helpfull but found in the end also one of the single beds was so uncomfortable springs kept sticking in your back but the other bed was ok, we arrived monday but become very unwell had to go to hospital due to pains with prostate problems also being sick the next day had a phone call of my doctor saying i should come home early suposed to stayed until thursday but i know its not the hotels fault but becouse we had to go home due to being ill we asked if we could maybe get half a money back but the assistant manager was so nice and helpfull she new what i was going through but the main manager wouldent give us any refund back said if we checked out with 48 hours notice he could of done it but we told them on tuesday wasent well so lost out on a holiday and exspence just for 1 half days dont think we will go back to this hotel again no consideration for someone genuine ill not happy at all

Review 100:food wasent to bad nice breakfast and room was nice and clean and bathroom towels

Review 101:room no 41 the view was looking out on to flat roof seagulls were very noise early morning windows were not closing curtains on both windows did not meet

Review 102:breakfast was very nice great selection the staff very helpful

Review 103:The car park could be bigger but I'm being picky.

Review 104:The hotel had a great bunch of friendly and helpful staff who even though some of the guests were (from my observations) a right pain in the rear end, always tried to be as helpful as possible. Free Wi Fi was a bonus and despite peoples moans it did work ok, yes you had to go to the lounge to use it but as it was free that wasnt an issue for me. I'd certainly go back to this hotel.

Review 105:-£5 per day for breakfast but even though all I was eating was the poached eggs they wouldn't allow me a third -no phone in room -'flat screen TV' was tiny

Review 106:Friendly staff, nice location, nice look of hotel

Review 107:Very tired decor, lovely building, needs tender loving care. Shower had to be held as no fixing from which to hang it. Would love to see this hotel decorated as it has the potential to look stunning.

Review 108:The staff were extremely friendly and attentive a credit to the hotel.

Review 109:The shower only had either luke warm or scalding hot. Barely saw any staff and at times, hard to find but they were pleasant enough. The "freeze dried" coffee was something to be desired!

Review 110:The hotel was dated but comfortable, beds were nice and comfy

Review 111:Our compact room although non smoking smelt like someone had smoked there, and tried to cover it with unpleasant air freshener. The bed was unacceptable, thin mattress and made noises with the slightest movement, so we asked to change rooms and met with a reply that there was nothing else, although it didn't seem busy. The window opened just 6 inches and the room was stuffy, had a very poor night sleep there.

Review 112:The staff and the parking.

Review 113:Although the bar was supposed to be available up to 11:00 and then after that for residents the bar shutters came down at 10:45pm and there was no service after that time for residents. The night porters have many other jobs to do through the night and therefore are unable to man the bar.

Review 114:Location was within walking distance of facilities

Review 115:It seemed a bit disorganised, especially the breakfast set up. Guests had no idea what to do or where to go, we paid extra for breakfast and they weren't even expecting us! Cleanliness was below standard, there was actually rubbish in our room and half a packet of left over crisps from previous guests - but no idea (or wouldn't like to think) how long they had been left behind!

Review 116:The staff were friendly.

Review 117:Stayed for 7 nights, breakfast was a bit of a muddle there was 4 of us but we had to sit somewhere different every morning and sometimes we had to sit separate , it would have been nice to have the same table!

Review 118:Very quiet and comfortable with helpful staff.

Review 119:No water pressure in the shower at times when other people are also showering,i.e. in the mornings before breakfast.

Review 120:Basic, but friendly, clean and reasonable value

Review 121:My wife and I did not have a bad experience at all, but we felt that,( constructive criticism), at times perhaps there was a shortage of staff and a slight lack of communication between staff.

Review 122:The attention, civility, pleasantness, and efficiency of the Staff. The cleanliness of the hotel, although some areas could do with a lick of paint. It's location of a five minute walk from the beach.

Review 123:Booked twin room with garden view 3 months ago . Arrived to find our room had been taken and where offered a "very small" room with double bed at rear of property with no view and smelling of "fish and chips". After refusing this room we got a twin room nearly next to the room originally booked.

Review 124:- the shower is very tricky, at first we couldn't make it work - there is no wifi, or the signal is very poor. We couldn't find any wifi signal anywhere in the hotel

Review 125:-Very nice decoration - we had a roon for two but it was big enough for four people - Close to the beach and train station

Review 126:Lack of staff, only one person on and bar not always manned. Would be okay if there were a way of letting staff know you were waiting. It is all a bit dated and in need of some care. I would stay again though

Review 127:Low cost, but fair for the money. Could be so much better for a bit more though!

Review 128:The hotel was tired with wall paper peeling off the walls, stained ceilings and chipped bathroom suites. The location would have been nice 20 years ago but is now surrounded by run down and closed 'attractions'. Staff were friendly when they were around but the hotel was understaffed.

Review 129:Cleanliness of room

Review 130:One thing the back door slammed shut with a bang when ever it closed which was annoying when trying to get to sleep

Review 131:The staff where more than helpfull and friendly breakfast was very reasonable priced room was clean and made up daily could not fault a thing

Review 132:On my first night I was given a bed with a mattress that was both very hard and that had sunk on one side from people sitting on the edge over the years. I kept rolling down it's slope and that was keeping me awake. The walls are wafer-thin, I could here everything from rooms that weren't even in the same location. The second night was better after staff replaced the mattress and the noise level decreased. I would be happy to return in the future providing all of the old broken mattresses (if any more) are replaced.

Review 133:The hotel is in a great location, the staff are friendly and helpful.

Review 134:Unable to have a shower or proper wash in the morning - no cold water, hot water dangerously near boiling, insufficient water pressure to move from bathtaps to showerhead. No phone in room so unable to phone reception for assistance.

Review 135:Good sized room, clean and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 136:Not much going on in the evening. Could have put a menu outside to encourage people to eat there. Small car park

Review 137:Staff were helpful and place clean. Lovely garden

Review 138:1. Poor room even though we were given an "upgrade". 2. Size of room was not good so I hate to think what a 2 person room was like. 3. The information said there were phones in the rooms, all except mine that is. 4. The standard of the cleaning was awful, there was talcum powder behind the bathroom door that was still there after we left 5 nights later and the carpet didn't look as though it had seen a vacuum cleaner for some considerable time. 5. The cleanliness of the towles left a lot to be desired, the white towels always looked "grubby" with some replacements that had black marks on.

Review 139:Good Location

Review 140:Annoying to have to find someone to give room key as reception hardly ever staffed.

Review 141:Hotel with some character and quite comfortable, well-equipped room.

Review 142:Poorly maintained, dirty carpets, creaky floorboards, very basic bathroom, smallest TV that I have ever seen, limited choice for breakfast

Review 143:Location was decent and was easy to find
