Reviews for Hôtel De La Banniere De France

Review 1:Only short people can feel comfortable here. There are many low beams and ceilings. Wifi didn't work at all Colour schemes in rooms were quite an eyeful

Review 2:Convenient to motorway Check in open until 23:30

Review 3:The room on the second floor was in need of a serious upgrade, it was 1960's era furnishing, the door had no latch, and the bathroom smelt.

Review 4:restaurant was good, and the staff attentive.

Review 5:Apart from the fact that bathroom could do with a little mould stain removal around the tiles, we had no complaints. (Though would have loved a kettle.)

Review 6:Lovely welcome, secure parking, interesting ancient building in beautiful town, good food, comfortable bed. Home made jams and walnuts for breakfast!

Review 7:I tripped up the step from the bathroom and fortunately didnt hurt myself when I fell other than tryung to do the splits at 82 yrs old

Review 8:we stayed some 39 years ago and little change

Review 9:old bathroom with grotty tiles and cracked sink - needs some TLC would be very hot in summer and if you opened windows would not sleep with traffic noise.

Review 10:wanted to visit Laon and stay in old town, this was only place An effort had been made to improve the rooms with new flooring and bed coverings The young man who welcomed us was very friendly and helpful carried our bags up the 3 flights of stairs

Review 11:The room was in poor condition, the bed and bedding felt old and uncomfortable, the carpets were grimy, the shower was worse and there was a general feeling of neglect, not helped by the large number of flies (the latter was probably not the hotel's fault, it may have been due to the weather).

Review 12:The staff were friendly, cheerful and very helpful. The location was perfect.

Review 13:Absolutely loved the restaurant ,amazing service not often found these days. Bedroom spacious and comfy. Hotel stills retains character . Staff very helpful and friendly.

Review 14:Friendly hotel in the middle of the old town with a decent restaurant and good, clean if slightly basic bedroom. Ideal for us. Parking our big estate car was a little tight but not a problem.

Review 15:Friendly place with a good vibe, close to all the sites in Laon. The restaurant is good too. And the Laon cathedral is absolutely charming and definitely worth a visit.

Review 16:The only small disappointment was that wifi reception in the room was a bit hit-and-miss.

Review 17:Lovely old coaching-style hotel up in the centre of the old town. Watch out for the low beams in corridors! Ate dinner in the hotel, a formal French meal starting with champagne cocktails and going on to include fish in a champagne emulsion, very good food and swift professional service from a friendly young man. Onsite parking at a small cost or there is pay-and-display at the rear of the hotel. A five minute walk to the cathedral and the other splendours of the old town. Fifteen minutes from the motorway so a good overnight stop on the way to/from Calais.

Review 18:The friendly staff!! They went out of their way to make things easy and pleasant! And the restaurant...do not miss the opportunity to eat at the fine , very exceptional restaurant. Number one place in Laon for sure!

Review 19:The building was quite ancient so there was a compromise - the central position was good for the cathedral and bistros but it felt like it belonged to a past ere.

Review 20:Location excellent and friendly and helpful staff

Review 21:The bathroom and the bedroom could have been cleaner. The cost of the room reflects the location but is top end for the facilities.

Review 22:The staff were wonderful and the food excellent. The location is great and it's not far to walk to any of the places you must see in the old centre.

Review 23:None

Review 24:This is the second time we have stayed there on the way back from Italy. It is just 2 hours from Calais. It has the feel of a hotel from the 1950's but with comfort of today. The restaurant is excellent, but excellent.

Review 25:We stayed here on our inward and outward leg of our tour. We asked for a quiet room and on both of our stays we were in probably the noisiest rooms in the hotel. The rooms are quirky which is fine but the hotel needs to invest in better pillows as ours were awful on both of our stays. The breakfast is OK and as it's included in the price it's hard to complain

Review 26:Laon is a great little town with the most fantastic Cathederal so it's well worth a visit. The hotel is right in the centre of town and is about 140 miles south of Calais so it's location is excellent for an overnight stopover

Review 27:The decor in this facility needs a bit of updating. The pillows were lumpy and hard, the worst on our whole trip.

Review 28:I can't say enough nice things about the staff at this hotel. They went out of their way to welcome us and help us park the car -- no small feat given that I was driving a 7-seater Peugeot and had to contend with the one-way street in front of the hotel while trying to fit into their private parking. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was a delight; our waiter was very attentive and pleasant. The beds were comfortable and the room was dark and quiet. Breakfast was good.

Review 29:The parking is outside the hotel on a pay and display site , but not a problem ,€2 for nearly 6 hrs.

Review 30:Brilliant location in a beautiful old walled city, endowed with numerous historic buildings ; even the creperie was 16th century!

Review 31:Very noisy room after we had asked for a room in a quiet part of the hotel. Our room must have been in the most noisy part

Review 32:Location. Very close to the sites and restaurants

Review 33:Paying for very difficult parking at the hotel.

Review 34:The best hotel location in Laon. Very comfortable rooms. Excellent breakfast, with lots of choice. Charming staff.

Review 35:I was upset to see that the plughole in our bathroom (room 16) was a bit gungy - Yuk. We know it is an old fashioned style hotel and have no problem with that, but felt the bedroom carpet and bathroom tiling were not as clean as they could be. The puddings were a major failure - the creme brulee was in no way like a creme brulee and the mille feuille had precisely two rather chewy layers. Very disappointing. Also bread and croissants at breakfast stale: breakfast not worth 9 euros 50.

Review 36:We liked the staff, the location and furnishing of our room and the overall ambience. We liked the first two courses of our evening meal. We liked having proper glasses and water in the bedroom.

Review 37:When we arrived, the man on reception couldn't show us to our room (No.18) and then disappear fast enough! We went for a walk around the town soon after our arrival. We decided not to eat at the hotel because we are vegetarians and the menu was typically French.(Which is to be expected!)When we returned after a couple of hours, having eaten at a very lovely brasserie,we retired to our bedroom. We are not a fussy family. We don't mind 'tired' which the hotel certainly is...but we do like comfy beds and clean rooms.Happily, the beds were quite comfortable with nice clean bedding but the rest of the room was terrible. There was an accumulation of dust on a ledge by the wardrobe and the bathroom was awful. The top of the toilet was cracked and looked mucky. Not sure if the toilet had ever seen bleach. There were mucky marks around the door handle. The shower head was sticky and dirty and there were bits of something all around the bath.(Shower was over the bath)All the skirtings were filthy and there was an accumulation of yuk behind the toilet and by the bath. The main door to the room wouldn't shut by the handle as it was broken ,only by turning the key could we ensure privacy. We didn't ask to change room because the beds were ok and we were really tired.Besides which,on closer inspection the stairs from reception didn't look too good either so we had no reason to assume that other rooms were any better. As it happens,my hubby caught a glance into another room the next morning and he thought it looked 'ok'.Breakfast is charged separately so we wandered down to have a look. There were 3 small jars of cereal, croissants and some ham and cheese that looked like they'd seen better days.No fresh fruit...or even tinned! All for 9 euros each.We declined breakfast and wandered around the corner to a lovely café, where we enjoyed coffee, tea, juice, a Panini, baguette and chocolate muffin for 9 euros in total!!

Review 38:We really loved the old town, although The cathedral and surrounding streets are desperate to have some money spent on them. Lovely cobbles and a couple of typical antique shops amongst several cafe's and brasseries make a lovely stroll to the magnificent cathedral.

Review 39:Room and facities a little dated.

Review 40:Friendly and helpful staff on arrival. Lovely breakfast room, with very good choice of continental breakfast. Room very clean with comfortable bed.

Review 41:Lights in the bathroom not good for shaving. Not sure if extract worked.

Review 42:Staff were very good. Our room on the front was quiet, spacious and comfortable. Old and quaint, please don't change anything.

Review 43:No tea or coffee available in room.

Review 44:Very attractive, quirky hotel. Staff were so polite, friendly and welcoming. They were fluent English speakers which helped. The Internet was very good. The breakfast was good although limited choice although understandable as there was limited guests.

Review 45:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was great and the location was excellent. A very typical French hotel - not an anonymous chain - and very charming.

Review 46:This was less comfortable than we expected at the price. The hotel seemed somewhat worn and threadbare.

Review 47:This was centrally located in the old medieval town of Laon. The staff were helpful and the room reasonably sized.

Review 48:Nothing

Review 49:The most fantastic hotel, typically French in a great location. But what makes this hotel stand head and shoulders above so many others is the staff. Attentive, polite dedicated to offering their guests the most amazing service. We have toured all over France and the staff at this hotel are by far the best we have met in any hotel in over 15 years of staying at countless places from the most expensive to real budget affairs. The food is out of this world, as someone who has his steaks blue, I sampled my girlfriends well done steak and was so impressed I asked that the chef prepare me a second entree just to see what he could do with a piece of beef. It was amazing and they did not charge me for it either. Cannot recommend this hotel enough.

Review 50:hard to sleep due to the heat traffic very busy on arrival

Review 51:Characterful hotel We enjoyed the location with restaurants nearby, a lovely evening walk watching the sun set and great views from the battlements Close to the hillside railway.

Review 52:No lift which was a problem for one of our party, old building and quite noisy on the road side as we had to have the windows open as the weather was so hot

Review 53:Centre of town, delightful staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Food excellent and inventive.

Review 54:There's a certain shabbiness that feels a little oppressive. The breakfast was not particularly good and as such should be included in the hotel price.

Review 55:The hotel is in the center of beautiful Laon. Staff was kind and helpful. The restaurant is good, with well performed traditional dishes.

Review 56:The weather was exceptionally hot and although we wouldn't expect air conditioning some fans in the restaurant would have been nice

Review 57:An individual hotel full of character. The room was spacious and the beds very comfortable. The restaurant was very good and the service was excellent. Good position to explore the historic town.

Review 58:The décor and facilities are a little tired and worn

Review 59:The staff here were wonderful and really went out of their way to be helpful. The hotel is full of character but not for you if you like modern, impersonal hotels. The restaurant is fantastic, probably one of the best meals of our trip

Review 60:I can't think of anything worth complaining about. Ok, so the shower head did fall off but I think I may have contributed to that, albeit unwittingly.

Review 61:We first encountered La Banniere when we stumbled upon last year's Fete de la Musique, and this year we came back for both. The building still creaks and there still isn't a level floorboard in the place. But that just makes it more loveable. Add to this the lovely staff, superb restaurant and easy access to the entire town on foot and it's no surprise we plan to return next year.

Review 62:Excellent restaurant, with very good quality food & wines. Excellent service from the friendly, professional and hardworking staff. We found it a comfortable place to stay after a long trip from Geneva, good value for money, with only a short walk along to the spectacular cathedral.

Review 63:Initial attic room offered of which the staff admitted knowledge of the strong musty spell - this after booking four months previously and the hotel far from full. Breakfast was very basic.

Review 64:Stylish dinner; the wallpapers; staff friendliness; the uneven floors

Review 65:The garage is tricky to get in and out of, but is very, very secure!

Review 66:The staff here are excellent, always ready to help and providing immaculate service. The hotel is an old building, with creaky beams and floors that have random slopes on them. The rooms have a faded grandeur but are fully-equipped and many are really large. It's well worth having your evening meal here too - carefully-cooked, delicious food.

Review 67:Decor slightly tired but clean and tidy.

Review 68:The staff were very helpful and went out of their way to enable me to get an early morning start. The restaurant food was great and very reasonably priced with impeccable service The hotel was built in the 1700's and is part of the fabric of this beautiful historic town. Secure garage space was available for 7 euro but apparently limited to a few cars.

Review 69:A very good hotel for an overnight stay (our second time here). All the staff are friendly and the food and service in the restaurant are commendable.

Review 70:Beware!! When we arrived we were offered a parking space at the hotel. It was only on departure that we were made aware of the 7 Euros per day charge! The shower in the bathroom was an old plastic cubicle and the shower head and holder were ill fitting so that it was difficult to position the jet of water successfully.

Review 71:Location was good. Friendly welcome at reception by a young man I took not to be not the owner.

Review 72:Nothing at all to not like.

Review 73:Lovely people, lovely hotel, lovely people, lovely room. lovely people, lovely food. Oh and did I mention the lovely people who run this family-run hotel.

Review 74:Surprisingly interesting town. A must see for alleys and cobbles, and walk round the walls. The hotel food is excellent but you need to book in advance. We couldn't get in that evening and heartily recommend the Agora Creperie Restaurant in the centre of Laon for evening meal.

Review 75:We loved being right in the old part of Laon so we could walk all over. We liked the staff and the food was great. Staff went out of their way for us.

Review 76:A friendly old-fashioned small hotel (in the best sense) with a wonderful and reasonably priced restaurant. Laon makes an ideal stop after a ferry crossing, but next time we shall linger longer to soak up the atmosphere of the town - and the hotel.

Review 77:Friendly and helpful staff. Outstanding restaurant with service and food only experienced in top establishments we've visited. Worth the trip for restaurant alone.

Review 78:The welcome was friendly and the service was excellent throughout with the staff ready to deal promptly to requests. The restaurant was very good and it was lovely not to have to go out and find alternatives.

Review 79:A bit of a climb (2 flights) to our room but the staff carried our bags.

Review 80:Fabulous restaurant, very convenient to old town and visiting the spectacular Laon cathedrale. Convenient parking around the corner.

Review 81:This place still feels like a traditional french hotel but without the plumbing issues that sometimes accompany such places. Very friendly staff. Their English was almost too good - we did not get the chance to practice our French

Review 82:Bedroom very old fashioned. Some of lights not working. Old electric wiring, bathroom awful shower broken. Told reception in the morning and what made matters worse is they knew shower was broken. Would not offer a discounted rate. Only give us a voucher for a further visit. Will not be staying there again.

Review 83:Location and evening meal good.

Review 84:The smell of damp in the room, and the lack of hot (rather than fairly warm) water throughout our 15 hour stay was tolerable because of the other pleasures of being in this hotel

Review 85:Staff attitudes were excellent. Full marks for effort. Wonderful position. Intend to return to this hotel and spend more time in Laon

Review 86:My husband and I would return to this hotel without a murmur of hesitation. It is an authentic French hotel with an excellent restaurant in an historic town. This hotel is the real thing. Yes, there will be some creaky floorboards, wonky walls and idiosyncratic decoration ... but the experience will be memorable in a good way (as long as you are not expecting a modern box). We stayed for two nights (and wished it had been longer). Our main regret is that we didn't dine in the hotel on both nights. On the first we dined at one of the many available (even in Winter) places in the mediaeval town - a so-so meal at an OK cost. On the second we stayed in the hotel - a revelation; the service was first class, the food was delicious, and the cost was modest. Even two months later I can still recall the taste of the chocolate pudding, marvel at the low cost of the special vegetarian meal (I just asked, and my request for an omelette was granted - and such a fluffy, tasty one at that), and appreciate the welcome introduction of warm canapes, fresh bread, ice-cold butter and hot toast.

Review 87:The shower wasn't great, but that's about it. I wish we could have taken advantage of the restaurant and wine cellar

Review 88:Good-sized room with comfortable beds. The breakfast was just right and the service was excellent. We arrived just before midnight and the staff couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome and offered drinks and food on arrival. We will book again next year.

Review 89:This is an old style hotel of the kind that is being driven out by the lego box hotels that offer exactly the same anodyne experience wherever they are located. As such, it presents residents with a few idiosyncrasies to enjoy. To be avoided by those of acutely critical disposition who would be better served by one of the modern hotel chains.

Review 90:Great location, friendly and welcoming staff, excellent restaurant, very comfortable in an interesting old building. Laon is of great historical interest, and I shall be returning for a longer stay at this hotel to give myself the time to have a good look round. Recommended to anyone looking for something a little bit different.

Review 91:The reconstruction work across the street.

Review 92:The whole atmosphere and the welcome we received from the staff. We have stayed many times over the years and are pleased to see that the standards have not dropped. We also liked the newly refurbished rooms

Review 93:Sadly, Laon is suffering badly from the economic downturn - the Tourist Office wasn't open for most of my visit, so finding out what I could do was "hit n miss". I had researched Laon .. but up to date info is always useful. The Library in the grounds of the Hospital was a 'find'.

Review 94:The warm welcome on arrival, my room with distant view of the plain below, the evening meals in the dining room. Although there is building work going on opposite the hotel, the sound didn't penetrate into my room.

Review 95:Our room cramped but we chose to be on the first floor and our original room on the second could have been better.

Review 96:Great staff. Good food. Brilliant waiter. Very good location in the old town with private undercover car park.

Review 97:It needs a refurbishment, but you fear it will lose its charm if that takes pplace

Review 98:The food. The décor the helpful staff. The Location. The town itself is a marvellous.

Review 99:nothing.

Review 100:We liked it all , the staff, the location the large comfortable room and the fabulous resturant, all came together to make for a ver enjoyable stay in this charming historic village,

Review 101:The only fault was limited parking, we were lucky to park on sat night, it's free at the weekend for public parking behind the hotel

Review 102:Good rooms with everything you require for a short stay, restaurant is superb, typical old style plenty of choice of menu!! Staff excellent, have made a note to stay again!!

Review 103:Rooms need updating Shower didn't work Old plumbing water only trickled out the taps took ages to get any water in the bath Wine prices very, very expensive

Review 104:Staff are excellent Rooms large Food good Private parking under hotel

Review 105:We stayed here overnight on our way home from Italy. Very friendly welcome from the staff who speak good English. Our room very clean and comfortable. Good food in very pleasant restaurant. Look forward to staying there again

Review 106:Lack of parking could be a problem, though we found a space in a public parking area at the back of the hotel.

Review 107:The staff couldn't do enough for us - even helping us carry our luggage to our car. The food was absolutely excellent and the room beautifully spacious and clean. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

Review 108:Too much furniture in the bedroom leaving no space to open our suitcase. You do not need three chairs in a room for two.

Review 109:Welcoming staff. Parking available although it was a challenge to park the car in the small garage. In the town centre. Big bathroom.

Review 110:unfortunately we were not aware to book car parking in advance.

Review 111:have stayed here many times and new owner and staff were very welcoming.Dinner as always excellent

Review 112:Difficult access to hotel on a busy one way junction, no lift and our room was on the second floor. The lovely young restaurant staff struggled with communication considering the number of international guests. Just small niggles that did nothing to spoil our stay!

Review 113:Stunning looking hotel. The welcome was lovely, the staff were great. Our room was large and beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean with a lovely bathroom with a mirror "for two" and a great shower. The evening cuisine, although not cheap, was superb and very professionally served as was the delicious wine. Breakfast was ample....pity we were still full up from the dinner! All in all a lovely stay...wish it had been longer.

Review 114:The difficulty in finding the correct access. The extremely difficulty in parking in the garage. The tiredness of the upholstery and furnishing and the bathroom The noisy road with continuous traffic through the night! Don't like coffee made long before drinking!

Review 115:Our dinner and choice. The ease of touring the medieval town and walking around. Old character of the building and the union flag flying!

Review 116:Nothing of any consequence.

Review 117:Friendly, helpful, relaxing, excellent location and very good restuarant. "Old World" charm in a modern setting - a nice change from the clinical feeling of modern "chain" hotels.

Review 118:The bathroom shower could have been a little cleaner, but the overall experience with the location and friendly staff provided alot of positives. We would stay here again.

Review 119:the staff were very friendly and helped us with parking, directions and with the menu. The hotel location was important and this certainly provided the views and wonderful shops.

Review 120:Can't think of anything, …Kettle in the room would have been good. TV only had French channels, We would have liked BBC or CNN.

Review 121:This hotel was like the hotels I stayed in with my parents in the 1960's but all the facilities were up to date and the beds were very comfortable. Dinner in the restaurant was superb. One of the best meals in France this year.

Review 122:The town -a gem for a stopover or a couple of days rather than a longer holiday. Very convenient for returning to Calais. The hotel building, the staff and the food were all excellent.

Review 123:Street noise late at night and even into early morning (4.30 a.m.). Very slow service for meal - two hours before main course arrived. Laon not very inspiring.

Review 124:Reasonable value. Delicious evening meal. Friendly staff.

Review 125:Didn't specify on booking.com that parking needed to be booked, fortunately they squeezed us in the last space.

Review 126:Lovely friendly staff. Traditional style. Excellent restaurant and wine cellar. Private parking. Family friendly. Great location.

Review 127:Parking is really difficult in the garage and there is nowhere else

Review 128:This old-fashioned hotel with it's creaky floor boards has a certain charm but is a bit jaded.

Review 129:Weak shower pressure on second floor. Quite a bit of early morning traffic noise in our room at the front.

Review 130:Traditional french hotel "feel". All the staff went out of their way to be helpful. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was very good. Great ambiance, old -style French restaurant, white tablecloths etc. and obliging waiters.

Review 131:Just managed to get my car into very small car-park.Room very cluttered and old-fashioned.We noticed that the hand-rails on the stairs were very sticky from sweaty hands and needed a good clean. Although we realize this is an old-fashioned hotel in an old historic building we still feel it is in need of a deep clean and some refurbishment.

Review 132:Good location, close to Laon's main attractions.Excellent dinner - but quite expensive. Decent breakfast. Helpful staff. Large room - but see comments.

Review 133:Bath and shower fitting broken and doors rather shabby.

Review 134:Given nice quiet room as requested. Very comfortable beds and bedding. Good size room. Excellent value for evening meal and service very good. Breakfast also good.
