Reviews for The City, Durham

Review 1:The staff are great really helpfull, we had been double booked but the staff went out of there way to accomodate all parties, the mangeress was a little less helpful mind

Review 2:Stayed 2 nights. No breakfast service on second morning - chef apparently failed to turn up for work. Disappointed at managers response - no real apology, had to ask for a refund of breakfast cost rather than being offered it.

Review 3:Convenient location for city centre

Review 4:Noisy guests retuning to their room next to us many times, from 2.30am - 3.30am . We spoke to the friendly manager the next morning and she said she would address it.

Review 5:A great location, large clean room with everything you need .

Review 6:Noise. The front room first given was very noisey . We requested a back room and got it. Very cosy. Mold throughout both rooms. Might be a problem with people with allergies.

Review 7:The staff was great! The breakfast good.

Review 8:Manager was asleep on the table when we went down for breakfast cleaner said he had been drinking all night . Breakfast was a plate of grease. Checking in was a nightmare no one there

Review 9:Great location

Review 10:Room is near the road and it is a little bit noisy

Review 11:staffs are really nice and helpful, breakfast is well cooked and the room is comfortable, recommended!

Review 12:New bathroom was let down by a leak and small patches of mould. TV didn't work. Free WiFi doesn't work.

Review 13:Clean, warm room. Bed was very comfortable. Bed linen was crisp and inviting. Shower was powerful, superbly hot and well stocked with bath paraphernalia. Complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits were more than adequate. Staff were helpful and cheery. Rooms were a very short walk away from the lumiere fest.

Review 14:There was no guest book in the room so we had no idea of dining times. When we attempted to order food at 7:00pm we were told that they were no longer serving even though a few minutes earlier a staff member gave us a menu. Same thing happened the next day, at 9:30am we were told they could not cook us breakfast as the chef had left at 9:00am. Not sure I believed that as another table was still eating their breakfast when we arrived. We were given cereal/toast and tea/coffee instead. Room wasn't well insulated could hear a constant creaking sound in the wall and people yelling and singing outside our window until about 3am. £70 a night and I had horrible nights sleep and was very annoyed by the staff's conduct.

Review 15:Location was ideal as we were in Durham for the lumiere light festival.

Review 16:Had a room at the front of the building and the road noice outside was far too much. No double glazing with sash Windows = v little sleep!!!

Review 17:Spot on location for bars, shops the cathedral and castle. The inn had a lovely bar area and friendly staff and a great cooked breakfast.

Review 18:However the pub on the ground floor was populated until after midnight both nights I was there, and the plumbing was so amazingly noisy, someone flushing the loo at 3am must have woken the whole floor. Got to sleep eventually with the aid of earplugs. Perhaps it would be best to choose this place only if you intend to be out late yourself, or to join the party at the bar downstairs.

Review 19:The rooms are nicely kitted out (if small) and have had money spent on them, they are cleaned to a high standard, the wifi works, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the breakfast in the morning was excellent.

Review 20:Being central there was quite a lot of noise from people and traffic. It was Halloween weekend though. It was expected to be honest, but the good quality bedding and bed meant we had a good night's sleep anyway.

Review 21:Great Central location. The Mexican themed menu was a nice surprise and the burritos were huge! Very large room (2) with lots of space. Breakfast top quality!

Review 22:It is rather noisy at night thanks to the local students - not the hotel's fault of course.

Review 23:This is a nice place to stay, has a bit of 'character' which sets it apart from the chain hotels. Very comfortable bed and I had a good night's sleep. Very good breakfast.

Review 24:My room close the hall's door some guest doesn't think about the door banging impact my sleep. Please think about the guests' need a peace and quiet times.

Review 25:It's cosy proper old English characters Hotel and pub. Love chocolate biscuits. Thank you.

Review 26:Some people might benefit from earplugs if they are easily disturbed during pub hours.

Review 27:Comfortable, value for money and within easy reach of Durham's sights. Knew it was a pub and the lively atmosphere didn't affect my stay in my room.

Review 28:The bath had a hair in it and the floor was unclean and the bed was really uncomfortable and we had a lot of noise from the room upstairs

Review 29:The location was good

Review 30:We loved the City. We only wish the decor would have enhanced the historic character of the property.

Review 31:Unbeatable location, great breakfast, large room, friendly staff.

Review 32:Bathroom was very small and not very good - toilet made huge noise when flushed - shower good tho. And no car parking - nearest one was not as close as I thought it would be.

Review 33:Beds

Review 34:no parking facilities. have to use on street parking (which is around 40p and hour till 6pm then again from 8am) walls are quiet thin and can hear what is going on in the room above (I'm assuming above as we where in room 1 and there were no other rooms around us)

Review 35:very central location, minutes away from the gala square where the most popular wine bars and restaurants can be found. shopping is seconds away. but it is far enough away to still be quiet (no road noise despite the cebtral location and a main road running outside) it was easy to find, even for the sat mav ha!! staff friendly and helpful. tasty breakfast the following morning. rooms clean and have the basics in

Review 36:Couldn't reach the window. Shower, though good, had a fixed head and fixed temperature. Only breakfast available was full English (of which I only ate some components). Above a pub, though not a problem in itself wasn't obvious on the booking.com website

Review 37:Quiet, clean with plenty of hot water

Review 38:A great choice - the staff are amazing and provide a fantastic welcome and support during your stay. Everybody from the bar staff to the breakfast chef is happy to chat and answer questions about the locality. The food is fab. some reviews say its loud- well at the end of the day it is a pub! - ask for a room out the back for the maximum quiet.

Review 39:Wifi cut out at random times. Our double room over the bar was a bit noisy until close to midnight. Takeaway not allowed from pub - typical in this area.

Review 40:The City offers the charm of a 500-year-old building with creature comforts like cushy beds, free wifi, and a fabulous free English cooked breakfast. The location is near the New Elvet Bridge, a short walk from shops, restaurants and historical sites. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 41:Nice room with everything you need for a single person's short visit. Very comfortable bed and excellent location. It felt cosier than staying in a big anonymous hotel chain.

Review 42:Pub B&B really not a hotel. Had to go to bar to check in which was a bit intimidating as a loan female, not very private asd all clientele could listen in. No details of services in rooms - e.g.check out and breakfast times, etc. Very impersonal. Noisy - room overlooked main road and the public could see right into the room so not private. Clatter of beer barrels being delivered and bottles being emptied into bins in evening and early morning. Creaky, steep stairs.

Review 43:Location

Review 44:The lack of parking. I did find however a car park nearby where I could park overnight for £1.50

Review 45:In the centre, very basic but clean. Room was small but had plenty of storage. Staff were friendly and helpful. Full English breakfast included in price which was cooked to order and was lovely.

Review 46:Unfortunately room was very noisy due to the hotel being right on the busy high street.

Review 47:The breakfast was good. Room clean and comfortable. Friendly staff.

Review 48:The waiter forgot to mention black pudding with breakfast and I made do with cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, toast, butter, marmalade, tea

Review 49:Let me use the room from 11:30 am

Review 50:Noisy at night at front of building, traffic and pedestrian crossing bleeped disturbed me a lot. Surely secondary glazing would be possible even though it is a listed building.

Review 51:Lovely size of room, plenty of hot water handy to centre.

Review 52:You could hear the footfall and door-slamming of other guests at all hours. Cramped room. The macerator in the bathroom switched itself on randomly. The television was tuned to very few channels. Worst of all, there were excrement stains in the lavatory bowl. They moved me to another room. All the comments still applied except the lavatory was clean.

Review 53:I liked departing.

Review 54:Room very straightforward but a little tired. Closing time resulted in lots of door banging just underneath the room. Morning deliveries were also noisy.

Review 55:Location good and staff friendly and helpful.

Review 56:Staff failed to issue a complete invoice like most of the hotels do. Would be a problem if you need to account for your expenses.

Review 57:Everything is okay. Small room but for small enough price.

Review 58:My room faced to the street and it is very noisy over the day and especially the night. Cars are running there and there is a pub downstairs so people make noise.

Review 59:Everything, except the noise from the street, was very good.

Review 60:When I paid, I asked for the bill. I was explained that they cannot print it now, but will e-mail the same day. Since then a week passed, and I have been sending reminders every day, but no answer. I am very dissapointed. If I do not get it on Monday, I will send a letter of complain.

Review 61:The wall was not helping. We could still hear people talking downstairs. Wifi was very weak in the room. And didn't help with the cleaness of the second day.

Review 62:Great location people were great.

Review 63:trying to locate it, taxi driver use postcode I had noted and then 2 tel. calls to find location and description given could have been better e.g. by traffic lights at junction New Elvert and XX or opp. estate agents named YY. When I booked confusion between no. 3 and no.87.

Review 64:Convenient from which to explore castle/cathedral area during the few hrs. available. Appreciated leaving luggage until asking for taxi in afternoon to station.

Review 65:The room was the smallest single that I have seen, definitely maximum use made of all of the space

Review 66:Friendly staff and fantastic location for all the local facilities and attractions. Also walking distance from the uni to visit my daughter.

Review 67:down side was car parking none at the hotel.result was a 15 min walk to the nearest decent car park.you had to be there for 8am to feed the meter.

Review 68:our first visit to durham so everything was new to us.the place is very busy with all the students.plenty of things to do and places to visit in the area

Review 69:The bed was really comfortable, and the shower was great. The breakfast was enormous and delicious. The staff were friendly, and the location was perfect. What's not to like?

Review 70:We didn't like being woken up at 7 am by staff playing loud music- we rarely get a lie in are normally up at 6 and had fancied a rest. When asked if everything was okay and we told the person this he didn't reply. Didn't like the lipstick on the beer glass, didn't like the cracked other glass, didn't like the indifference of the staff. But..its central and its cheap..

Review 71:It was central and cheap

Review 72:How busy the traffic was all day and most of the night. Next time I'll ask for a room at the back.

Review 73:Location is perfect for exploring Durham and the iconic Cathedral and Castle.

Review 74:No sleep till 2am due to noisy road/ drunken people. Sound proofing poor. Wifi strength mediocre. Bathroom design poor - also most impossible to reach taps/plug to have a bath due to fixed shower panel. Dark hair - not mine! - found on pillow. Staff disinterested in guests.

Review 75:Workers and staff in the hotel were very polite , wonderful service and I would like to repeat stay at this hotel. Safety, free Wi-Fi and hygiene is very excellent.

Review 76:Nothing

Review 77:I wasn't aware that The City had accommodation but everything about it was excellent. Great central location, small but very comfortable room and good breakfast. Will certainly be back.

Review 78:Very clean spacious room and very friendly staff. Great central location.

Review 80:noise in pipes when flashing but understandable as it is a very old building.

Review 81:very central location, powerful shower. radiator is very warm.

Review 82:Location, service and facilities were all excellent. Huge room and v comfortable bed

Review 83:plumbing pipes rattling and banging ALL night!!

Review 84:bar downstairs

Review 85:Stair carpets and landing carpets very dirty.Very noisy from pub on a weekend night.

Review 86:Excellent location and very good breakfast.

Review 87:If you have a room over the street, the noise won't stop all night.
