Reviews for Sniperley Hall
Review 1:Nothing to dislike, never heard a pin-drop during our stay..so peaceful! A very classy house, owned and run by lovely people.
Review 2:We were upgraded at no extra cost, put into room 1 instead of room 2,which was huge with en-suite bathroom. Comfy bed and nice power shower and toiletries. Breakfast was lovely using all local award winning ingredients. Jim the host, even scraped the snow from my car windscreen on the morning we left for home. Bus Park & Ride close by,charging £2 each for an all-day ticket around the City of Durham. The bus operates from 7am-7pm.
Review 3:Special preferences not serviced - foam pillows and foam duvet made sleeping hot and uncomfortable - feather requested and was told afterwards SHall hadn't seen special requests. Bed very low to the floor challenging to get in and especially out of it! Basic breakfast offers - no menu. Weak fresh coffee. Unaware there was no provision for evening food.
Review 4:Large room - sofa - large bathroom and shower. Comfortable mattress. Pleasant staff.
Review 5:The only very very very minor thing is I do like a proper napkin but that's my foyble
Review 6:We also had our 90 year mum with us and she thought it was fab Mine host was super and our room massive and great value and breakfast with fresh eggs that day from their own hens We will return, thank you
Review 7:We arrived in the dark and the entrance off the main road was a little difficult to see.
Review 8:Lovely large room and bathroom. Everything was very clean and the owner very friendly and helpful. I really liked the wine and crisps left out on an 'honesty' basis.
Review 9:The entrance to the B&B is not easy to see and visibility is restricted. A larger sign on the side of the road giving better warning of driveway and would be an improvement
Review 10:Jim was an excellent host and nothing was too much trouble. The B&B is really well placed for Durham and the spectacular scenery of Hadrians Wall
Review 11:Pleasant clean and friendly place to stay.Breakfast was excellent.and close enough to the centre of Durham for a short taxi ride into town.would visit again.
Review 12:Nothing bad to say. We had a room with lovely private bathroom across the hall. I found this a little inconvenient (my husband didn't) but that is only my personal opinion. It wouldn't prevent me going again.
Review 13:Unique hotel in quiet location. Within easy reach of Durham centre via Park & Ride. Made to feel very welcome by host with a wealth of local knowledge and advice. Very clean warm and comfortable. Breakfast excellent.
Review 14:For us as travellers the location was very good. Easy to walk into centre. Owner very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast. Comfortable room a little tired in some areas.
Review 15:There's nothing bad to say about this place at all.
Review 16:We have never been so comfortable in a hotel! The room was clean and spacious, and we slept very well. The owners were friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent, We would always recommend Sniperley Hall.
Review 17:A warm and courteous welcome from landlord Jim. We were shown to our large, airy and light room which gave us a view over the countryside. The bed was very comfortable, the wardrobe was enormous and the settee was easy to move to watch tv when needed. Lighting was excellent and the room made up to "arrival" standard each day with fresh tea coffee and biscuits. Breakfast was superb and kept us going until evening. The bathroom was large and well fitted, powerful shower, lots of hot water. Jim is very knowledgeable about the local area and will help, if asked, to recommend places to visit and to eat. We will stay at Sniperley again and are looking forward to it.
Review 18:Lovely big room and very comfortable bed!! Friendly and helpful owner. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay even if it was only one night. Would definitely stay again.
Review 19:We had an overnight stay at Sniperley Hall and were warmly welcomed by James. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. Jim ( James'father) served a wonderful breakfast and was very informed and passionate about the locality. We only wish we could have stayed longer.
Review 20:Jim went to a lot of trouble to solve a problem I had with the bed. Very knowledgeable about the area and places to visit. Very good breakfast with a good range of well prepared food.
Review 21:Fantastic hotel in a great location, a 30min walk to the centre of Durham. The hosts couldn't do enough during our stay. Amazing fresh, organic, local breakfast
Review 22:Nothing at all - fantastic stay at a lovely place!
Review 23:The owners were fantastic and so welcoming! Fantastic nights sleep due to the quiet and lovely location! Breakfast was lovely and loved how homely the property felt with their pets which weren't allowed upstairs which I think is fantastic! The honesty bar was a great plus and I honestly felt they couldn't have done enough for us!
Review 24:The place seemed to lack soul some how . To minimal for the period of the building. It was quite cold room was massive heating needs to be addressed .
Review 25:met at the door very welcoming clean breakfast good so glad we was able to have up grade.
Review 26:The main drive to the property could do with re-surfacing and more attractive planting at the front of the property would be good
Review 27:Very convenient access to Park and Ride to the city
Review 28:Private bathroom across corridor. Conscious of disturbing others during the night.
Review 29:Spacious, comfortable bed and room. Helpful, friendly hosts with up to date local knowledge. Great breakfast!
Review 30:No problems at all and everything was to our liking.
Review 31:Perfect - host very welcoming, good size bedroom, comfy bed and no noise. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of cereals, fruit and full English if required. Walking distance to the park and ride into Durham was a bonus.
Review 32:Wifi was very unreliable for me, and there aren't enough tables in the dining room so you might end up sharing...
Review 33:Great facilities in the room and nice and peaceful, great hosts
Review 34:Nothing we didn't like.
Review 35:Very friendly and great location - only a 5 minute taxi ride to the centre of Durham and there's a park and ride around the corner for £2. It's not the most modern house but very nicely kept and clean - just what we needed!
Review 36:The bed may be a little soft and low down for some but okay by me.
Review 37:Friendly, informative owner; lovely big room and private bathroom; amazing breakfast with fresh produce from the local farm.
Review 38:Although we arrived over an hour early, we were given a warm and friendly welcome. Jim, our host, was extremely helpful in advising us about Durham. The breakfast choice was excellent. We wouldn't hesitate to book here again it was such a pleasurable experience.
Review 39:No shaver point in bathroom. Rooms were dusty. Didn't like having to share table during breakfast. Property difficult to spot from road as signage obscured by tall grass.
Review 40:Quiet location. Decent sized rooms. Pleasant staff. Sweet dogs!
Review 41:Kind, friendly host. He drove us into town when we arrived, so we wouldn't have to take a taxi into town. It is obvious that he LOVES hosting people at Sniperley Hall. Felt very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Location great. Near park and ride. Used park and ride once when returning from town because we didn't have a car. Very simple, short ride back to Sniperley.
Review 42:Only having to cross over the corridor to our own bathroom. Although very spacious it would have been nice to be informed of the need for a dressing gown.
Review 43:JIm, the owner, very nice and full of information. The place was clean and very spacious.
Review 44:Nothing
Review 45:Beautiful old house with spacious garden. Large and cosy room and comfortable bathroom. Friendly and helpful host. Near to a P+R where you can take a bus to the city.
Review 46:Lovely house with an interesting history. Large bedroom with a comfortable bed and sofa. Excellent breakfast. A good base for exploring Durham and the area.
Review 47:Shampoo was left in the shower so wondered if it had been cleaned? Couldn't seem to open a window so glad it was a large room. We thought the price was too expensive for what we got. Big isn't always better!
Review 48:Huge room so we could spread out for a change and bed was comfortable. Liked the fridge in the hall idea. Breakfast was nice.
Review 49:Delighted to report that our stay was as wonderful as our other visits have been. Faultless from start to finish, Jim went out of his way to help. Cannot wait to return, Chris & Cherryann
Review 50:To start with it was graduation week in Durham so all hotel costs were high and availability was very limited. I'm so pleased therefore I stumbled across Sniperley Hall. Only a few minutes out of town with a wonderful location. It was premium quality attention for everything from the room, linen, tea and biscuits, breakfast - served up courtesy of the local farmer. This is a family business that goes above and beyond the call of duty, you will not be disappointed.
Review 51:Having read travellers reviews before arriving I pretty much expected excellence and that's what we got. Looks lovely immediately on arrival. Staff friendly and helpful, room huge and comfortable, breakfast. Full,of choice. Share table with other guests which was nice. Good to meet people from all over.
Review 52:Extremely spacious room with sitting area, lovely setting, cordial host, fantastic breakfast, authentic country home with horses and rabbits in the fields.
Review 53:for such a large bedroom the double bed wasn't very comfortable, two 3ft singles side by side or joined would have been great
Review 54:easy to find and only a short walk to the excellent park and ride for access to city centre
Review 55:it was a large period bedroom ,however it was slighty dated and out of character with ikea furniture within.
Review 56:owner's effort to make sure your stay was good, size of room and honesty bar.
Review 57:None
Review 58:Very spacious bedroom with several sofas. Comfortable bed. Modern shower cubicle in spacious bathroom, with an exercise bike. Great hosts - helped me to take my bags up to the room. Very good cooked full English breakfast. Close to Park and Ride Terminal.
Review 59:Bathroom door needed a good pull to close properly, seems to have warped a little, but no huge issue.
Review 60:Very welcoming host, polite and keen to answer questions should you have any. Nice breakfast spread.
Review 61:Did't like having to cross the corridor for the ensuite
Review 62:Excellent, helpful host, good location right near park'nride. Comfortable room. Excellent breakfasts
Review 63:I had such an enjoyable stay here I wished it could have been longer! Jim and Irene were warm, welcoming and genuinely lovely. The bed was super comfy, and the cooked breakfast the following morning was delicious with eggs from the owners' hens, and bacon and sausage sourced locally. There were healthy options too, including fruit, a variety of seeds and nuts, cereals and yoghurts. I can really recommend a stay here.
Review 64:Absolutely nothing!!!
Review 65:Very comfortable rooms. Thoroughly enjoyed our chats over breakfast with Jim (the owner) who gave us excellent advice on what to see and do in the area.
Review 66:In the middle of the countryside yet not 10 minutes from Durham and with a Park and Ride facility a short walk from the Hall. Great welcome, great breakfast from home farm produce, a spacious room and separate bathroom in Scandinavian/English Country style.
Review 67:The approach road was in need of lots of maintenance and signage was poor.
Review 68:The countryside location. Proximity to a Park & Ride and major road system.
Review 69:For us, a little too much 'chat' at breakfast by the host. For some it would be lovely but for us, a little too much. No residents lounge.
Review 70:Loved the fact that we were staying in someone's home.
Review 71:Owners aware that they need better signage and seriously need lighting at the entrance. At night on a very fast road, with headlights facing and behind, you can't see the entrance. The entrance is just after the fire station.
Review 72:Good host. Good food. Large, en suite room (no 1). 5 minute walk to park & ride, £2 all day ticket into and out of Durham. Far better than trying to find parking.
Review 73:The tranquillity and peaceful surroundings are how we all should live! Lovely spacious room with fresh milk in a jug in a fridge on the landing - along with a selection of beers & wine (money to be placed in the honesty jar). Not many b & b's come up to this standard! A great breakfast with lots of locally sourced fresh produce. Another grand time spent here. I'll be back again, rest assured. Many thanks Jim & Irene, you are the perfect hosts.
Review 74:The room was large and warm, very comfortable and had all the usual facilities. The breakfast was excellent, one of the best I have ever had! The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful, made us very welcome.
Review 75:Only criticism would be that the modern ikea furniture not entirely in keeping with the period of the house.
Review 76:The room was huge and the adjacent bathroom great. Lovely views from the window and beautiful house.
Review 77:Unlike some hotels and B&Bs, it ticked all the boxes. The owners are clearly the type of people who like to go the extra mile in order to ensure their guests have an enjoyable stay; and it works, we want to go again!
Review 78:On the first night one of the Jack Russells must have been spooked by something because he started barking through the night (but eventually stopped, so no big deal).
Review 79:Huge, bright rooms (we had a sofa and 2 armchairs in our room, Room 4!), comfy bed. Very quiet. The choice at breakfast is vast. Walking distance to the Park 'n' Ride (half a mile). Two cute Jack Russells who can follow you round although they aren't a pest and are very obedient!
Review 80:The quality of all aspects outstanding but it was the little things i.e the honesty bar very well priced, the real coffee in the morning and the friendliness of the owners.
Review 81:Not a thing.
Review 82:Rooms were very spacious, comfortable and very relaxing. Staff are very polite and courteous, and will bend over backwards to accommodate you. Breakfast was beautiful with locally sourced bacon and sausages and overall it was a very pleasant experience. I would definitely stay here again and can't wait to do so.
Review 83:Hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Rooms were very spacious, clean, light and airy. Breakfast was excellent with locally sourced food. I would have no hesitation in returning
Review 84:We had a wonderful weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sniperley Hall. Jim went out of his way to make us feel welcome. The house is beautiful and the breakfast was delicious!!
Review 85:We were greeted at the door by Jim & made to feel very welcome straight away. There's a lovely calming & peaceful energy noticeable on entering the home of the owners Irene & Jim. The rooms are spacious & comfortable having a variety of reading books in each, with an honesty bar upstairs in the hallway - you can't beat fresh milk from the fridge for a cup of tea - rather than the usual UHT stuff on offer elsewhere! There is a good variety of food (most of the English Breakfast food) being locally sourced or freshly produced by the owners hens with optional alternatives for vegetarians, including cereals & herbal teas etc. Irene & Jim's local knowledge of the surrounding area & sight seeing options are helpful. All in all a very pleasant stay & I will be back for sure! Thanks. Viv & George.
Review 86:The hosts were extremely friendly and knowledgable about the area. The accommodation was perfect for our getaway with the breakfasts being a highlight.
Review 87:The house is stunning and standard of accommodation superb, with a huge bedroom and bathroom. The breakfast of fresh local produce in the morning was fantastic and we were bowled the owner even gave us a lift to the wedding we were attending nearby, which was completely unexpected and a lovely touch. Outstanding.
Review 88:It is a bit hard to find in the dark. Watch out for a right turn soon after the fire station as you leave Durham
Review 89:Everything, friendly and very elegant.
Review 90:Lovely clean and spacious room , bathroom was a good size too. Very hospitable hosts who offer a fantastic breakfast , the black pudding is not to be missed !
Review 91:Wifi that was out of use most of the time we were there, due to faults which failed to be corrected. Rather hard bed and also hard pillows. And excellent-looking shower that was barely usable due to shallow shower-tray. Flood narrowly averted!
Review 92:Very well-furnished, comfortable, rather hard bed and pillows, warm, sizeable room, good facilities, good breakfast and plenty of it, pleasant staff. Mostly excellent value for money.
Review 93:We travelled by public transport and while the park and ride was very useful it didn't operate on Sunday. Local buses do not stop nearby.
Review 94:The general ambience and the friendly welcome
Review 95:Only negative comment would be the decor looked a little tired and could do with some updating.
Review 96:Very nice stay. Delicious breakfast. Very friendly and made to feel very welcome, would certainly stay there again.
Review 97:Only one tiny point which is that in the dark it's easy for first time visitors to miss the sign, especially if there's a car right behind you. But you can turn and come back quite easily.
Review 98:Good value. Good quality breakfast with lots of choice. Very comfortable bed. Attractive bedroom and en-suite:that little bit different. Very quiet location. Easy parking right outside front door. Sense of pride in the owners in what they were offering-well justified.
Review 99:Helpful hosts!! Upon arrival, Jim was ever so welcoming! He provided us with really useful information on places to go and dine on the evening and there was a list of taxi numbers waiting for us should we need them. There was ample parking outside. The room was massive and very well presented! Brilliant value for money! There was a lovely little "shop" outside the room with shelves of things you could help yourself to with a little "honest jar" you could pay for your items in, which we thought was a lovely little touch. We will be travelling from Surrey to stay again soon!
Review 100:Nothing.
Review 101:Jim and Irene were incredible to my wife and I. They made our stay in Durham so welcoming we extended another 3 nights. The location is ideal being very quiet and spacious with excellent access to the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, The Holy Island, Hadrian's Wall, to name a few. The breakfasts we're absolutely delicious, a very extensive selection and made fresh to order. Plan to stay a few extra nights, Durham is an awesome and friendly city steeped in history and there is no better place to stay than at Sniperley Hall. See you in Spring 2015.
Review 102:no negatives
Review 103:Lovely big room and bathroom, lovely shower, kind and caring people, nothing too much trouble and a delicious breakfast - even with soya milk for my daughter. We will certainly be back
Review 104:The bathroom was across the hall. (We knew that when we booked the room.)
Review 105:The room was quite large, as was the bathroom. At the top of the grand staircase there's a welcoming array of snacks and drinks for purchase. Host was friendly and had lots of information about the area to share. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Review 106:Turning right into the driveway, a little hairy, as the locals drive very quickly.
Review 107:Light airy room with a comfortable bed. We also liked the honesty shop with a reasonably good selection of wines and savoury snacks, useful if you are late arriving. The breakfasts were really good made with locally farmed meats. Great staff.
Review 108:The wifi was a massive plus for me, the modem was located right outside my room so we had a strong signal, the location was very nice a large manor house with a long drive off the main road so there was no noise, room was huge bed was comfy and the hosts and food was fantastic!
Review 109:See above.
Review 110:There's lots to like at Sniperley Hall unfortunately the mattresses cannot be included in that overall assessment. The breakfast was excellent and the helpfulness of staff was terrific but our stay was spoilt by a very very uncomfortable mattress on our bed. The staff did what they could to help (we shuffled the mattresses that were on our bed around with the help of staff which helped the problem slightly) but the fact remains that the mattresses on our bed seemed to be quite old and they were very uncomfortable. I would recommend Sniperley Hall but for the bed we encountered.
Review 111:Room and en suite excellent Great breakfast Welcoming host Good location for access to Park and Ride into Durham City - less than ten minute bus trip
Review 112:That we only stayed one night.
Review 113:It was like an old manor house. We stayed in two large rooms that were lovely. The grounds were beautiful, even in the rain. Breakfast was fabulous!
Review 114:Don't drive too fast or may miss the entry to the hotel.
Review 115:Nice & helpful hotelowners, beautiful surroundings, perfect shower, big, clean & comfortable bedroom, sitting room & bathroom. Perfect wifi.
Review 116:The room was large and airy with a large comfortable bed. The breakfast was excellent, particularly the bacon and sausages, which I believe were produced from local rare breed pigs. The honesty shop is a good idea especially if you did not feel like going out.
Review 117:We were concerned that the noise when water was being used in our room would disturb other guests.
Review 118:The bed was very comfortable; The bathroom was beautiful; The breakfast was superb; The hosts could not have been more helpful; Wonderful B&B
Review 119:The heating was really efficient, so during the night we became very warm, and had a small problem opening and keeping open the window, really something and nothing.
Review 120:Location, peaceful, relaxing, the owners, size of the room, breakfast, cleanliness, just about everything.
The Fine Print
To find the property, at the top of the drive bear left until you will see the big yew tree. Sniperley Hall is located next to another property called The Beeches.
