Reviews for Honest Lawyer Hotel
Review 1:There was supposed to be free wi-fi but my room directly opposite the main reception area could not find any networks at any time.
Review 2:It was handy for Durham and the motorway
Review 3:Noise from the main road. Some drivers drove very quickly in the car park immediately outside our rooms - a concern with a young child in the group.
Review 4:Pleasant and helpful staff. Nice restaurant. Convenient for Durham station.
Review 5:The room was noisey at times during the night. While using the shower it was hot initially and then after 5 minutes ran cold for a long time which was annoying.
Review 6:Friendly staff. Great breakfast.
Review 7:the receptionist when we got there we reported the shower being faulty she did not want to no did not offer to change us rooms also the hair drier broke told my partner she would send another one over my partner had to go back she said she forgot but hair drier was on desk next to her she was not interested
Review 8:food in restaurant was good
Review 9:Only thing was lots of creeking in the bedroom - from pipework?
Review 10:Great location close to but out of Durham Very helpful and friendly staff Car parking next to room
Review 11:Room was unclean especially the bathroom black hairs all over. Tiles were cracked. Found a durex leaflet on the room floor.
Review 12:Staff were friendly and helpful
Review 13:Meal deal not available during December.
Review 14:Staff were friendly and very helpful. Easy access by bus every 5 - 10 minutes into Durham from just outside the hotel. Paid extra for room in main hotel, but motel style rooms in the court yard look very good.
Review 15:Had to leave earlier than planned due to getting a phone call to say our house was been evacuated due to flooding!!!!!
Review 16:The hotel had a very warm atmosphere and felt very relaxing
Review 17:we stayed in the four poster room (room 48)really nice room, very clean and nicely set out.very good sized bath in a very clean bathroom. we had booked bed and breakfast, the breakfast was very nice although a little small in portion size for a grown adult. the staff and very polite and accomodating, they are a credit to this hotel. would definatly stay here again the next time im in durham, and would recommend this hotel
Review 18:Serious issues over the last few stays with not only wifi access but phone signal which severely hampered my ability to work.
Review 19:We like the rooms and the location, the price seems fair.
Review 20:Our room had a connection door to the next room. Although it was locked this resulted in bad sound insulation and we had to call the reception middle of the night to ask for the volume of next door TV to be turned down.
Review 21:The restaurant and the food served
Review 22:We did not like finding a dirty pair of socks in the room. Also the water temperature in the shower was variable. I nearly got scalded then frozen. The furniture was very tired and some tiles in the bathroom were broken. The breakfast was a flat rate. Would have been usefull if there was a continental option and not just a complete breakfast option.
Review 23:Having a restuarant onsite and buses at the door. Having the car outide the room was good.
Review 24:We stayed on the 14th of November for one night and the evening meal and breakfast were superb as were all of the staff who could'nt do enough for you. Will go back again
Review 25:All good
Review 26:The whole experience was a good one. We booked to spend time in Durham and the hotel is only 10 mins drive away. The staff were lovely and breakfast was good quality. We would definitely stay again.
Review 27:The staff were excellent, very cheerful and helpful. The restaurant was good, the food being particularly nice. The dog was welcomed almost everywhere and we could take her with us when we ate.
Review 28:I was surprised by the actual room we were given as the website did not seem to mention that rooms were it in the actual main hotel building. When we went to the bar, the bar staff member was more u retested in picking her nails and had a rude attitude.
Review 29:The actual main hotel building was lovely, the restaurant area was too. The meal was lovely the next afternoon
Review 30:The initial appearance is rather off-putting but once inside the rooms they are excellent.
Review 31:Restaurant was excellent both for lunch and breakfast. Ample on-site parking
Review 32:The hotel had a very good restaurant but there were very few places to sit and relax.
Review 33:ideal place to access Durham, we liked that we could park our car outside our hotel room.
Review 34:Paid a little extra for a four poster room, but was disappointed. The room was small, the "four poster bed" was pretty basic and the tv remote didn't work . The bathroom had seen better days, was grubby and the shower curtain had an awful musty smell.
Review 35:Beautiful location
Review 36:Noise from kitchens which at times was very loud indeed ( we could actually hear staff conversations from Room 54.
Review 37:Bed very comfortable. Overhead shower excellent.
Review 38:Stayed here a few times and normally stay in the court yard , this time stayed in the four poster room , room was lovely but the sound of the traffics keep me awake all night
Review 39:friendy place , very clean rooms very comfortable , food fantastic
Review 40:TV didn't work, barking dog next door during the night, noisy neighbours. When I sat at the dressing table I couldn't see myself in the mirror to dry my hair as it was too high up on the wall
Review 41:Reception staff
Review 42:The room was lovely and warm on arrival. Very comfortable. All the staff were pleasant, efficient and very helpful. This was our second visit and we will be back.
Review 43:We were in room 33 and there was a constant noise of a pump or something when a tap was turned on in the block. We hoped that would stop at night. Which it did. The biggest problem was there is no sound proofing and insulation in the rooms. The guests in room 34 decided to have a long chat from 8.00pm to 2.30am and it disturbed us throughout. They were not particularly loud but due to lack of insulation it was quite noisy. As a result we could not sleep. We checked out early.
Review 44:Location to where we wanted to be. The staff were friendly and pleasant. We had a great start at check in. While we were waiting to check in, we were served coffee which was a very nice touch. Shame it went down hill from there.
Review 45:A little far from the town but bus was available from right outside the hotel.
Review 46:The staff were so good to us, we arrived very early to just drop our bags off and check in later but the reception made sure a room was available to us then and there so we could check in. The room was spotless. Comfortable beds. Nice shower. I defiantly recommend this place, we were very impressed.
Review 47:The price of the drinks. At breakfast the waitress was very friendly and helpful but we were seated and asked for tea or coffee but we were not told about the procedure for breakfast.
Review 48:On the Friday evening the main waiter in the restaurant was very professional and friendly and the food was fantastic. The room was very clean and comfortable.
Review 49:The room was too warm on the first night of our stay but we soon realised we could adjust the radiator temperature. We didn't realise until the morning though so spent an uncomfortable night.
Review 50:Comfy bed. Powerful shower. Good breakfast.
Review 51:Room allocated were directly over the kitchen resulting in waking up at approx 4am! Room needed a spruce up with minor repairs required.
Review 52:Facilities in room, parking & bar.
Review 53:Quite noisy at night with the road noise and when others returned. Could hear television and extractor fan in neighbouring rooms. Water temperature intermittent.
Review 54:Convenient location. Friendly staff.
Review 55:The double bed was a bit hard and the only food available at the hotel seemed to be expensive (probably high-end and good quality but not what we needed at the time).
Review 56:Good value, all that we needed was there in the room, good access to Durham by car, clean, dog-friendly. Lovely countryside nearby.
Review 57:No wifi in the bedroom for the whole stay despite raising it with reception twice! With no signal you are totally uncontactable! Double beds on the smaller side and pillows very uncomfortable. Room was very cold on arrival.
Review 58:Spacious room. Good shower. Quite modern.
Review 59:Convenient location for our visit to Durham. Caught the bus directly outside very easily. Warm, clean rooms, lovely fluffy towels. Good selection for breakfast.
Review 60:Our room had noisy plumbing which kept us awake, and the staff moved us without hesitation. There was a slight mustiness about the second room, but not enough to make us grumble.
Review 61:The room was very comfortable and warm, and the food was faultless, as were the staff.
Review 62:The bathroom fan didn't work and on both evenings when showering the water pressure was worse than appalling. In the morning it was great.
Review 63:The rooms and bathroom were clean.
Review 64:Waitress staff General accomodation poor quality and lower than expected for the cost Taxi service into Durham was very poor- not your making but a problem non the less
Review 65:All OK
Review 66:Had excellent second visit to Honest Lawyer and will be back
Review 67:Whilst out of town it is on a regular and convenient bus service to Durham and we used this service during our visit. Comfy bed and helpful staff
Review 68:Room had no wireless signal or phone signal at all. Pump room must have been located next door and the noise of it kept my wife awake most of the night, also toilet would not flush until you ran the tap to active said pump next door??? When mentioned upon checkout not a great deal was said and no reduced price or compensation was offered.
Review 69:Nice building, well furnished and decorated. Everything nice and clean. Food excellent. Staff very friendly and polite. Room was nice and light and also well decorated and clean, bed was fantastically comfortable as where the pillows.
Review 70:There was nothing to see or do in the immediate area.
Review 71:This is a comfortable roadside motel and restaurant, best suited to travellers who just need a bed for the night. Rooms were warm and pretty quiet considering it was on a busy main road and it was freezing outside. There was an onsite restaurant with standard pub fare.
Review 72:No wifi in the room. Bathroom cold and a bit damp. The plate my restaurant food arrived on was really mucky around the edges and bottom.
Review 73:Everyone was very friendly and I appreciated the free toothpaste which I had forgotten! The man on reception booked me a taxi for the morning which I was very grateful for.
Review 74:Room had a musty odour I think caused by dampness as hotel prone to flooding from nearby rivers. Apart from that the room was very satisfactory and the available parking outside.
Review 75:Food, location and very pleasant staff.
Review 76:Location perfect for city centre. Bus stop right in front of hotel. Room was perfect for our stay with plenty of tea/coffee. T.v good size. All staff were very friendly.
Review 77:The noise was like Chinese torture - the bathroom fan sounded like a helicopter and it continued to make an awful noise after it was switched off We decided not to use it but the fan to the next door room may as well have been in our room since that was noisy too. Also the heating pipes made tapping sounds all through the night. We both slept badly which is a shame s the bed was comfortable.
Review 78:Room 10 had water pump above it so very noisy whenever a tap was turned on in any of the row of rooms at any time of the nIght!. Room door straight to outside so no noise reduction at all from road or neighbours. We first had a four poster room which was big though tired and it was at the back over the kitchens - you could hear voices and other noises.
Review 79:The bed in the courtyard room was comfortable. Views over fields. Parking next to room. Refurbished a few years ago after flooding so better than house rooms.
Review 80:It's a fair way out of town, although a bus runs right past.
Review 81:Great modern motel rooms set off the road behind a traditional inn serving excellent food.
Review 82:Oversea signed bill without glasses to find a pint off Stella I think was on when I only ordered carlsberg and house wine my fault unable to see if I could sure it would have been resolved
Review 83:Staff very professional and polite
Review 84:The most important thing that I didn't like the cold of the path room l hope they can put a heater inside
Review 85:The stuff was so friendly and cooperatives and the food was delicious. The location was suitable and transportation was very easy
Review 86:Meals are a bit expensive
Review 87:Easy check in and out, nice tidy room with everything I needed. Little issue with the TV not working properly was efficiently sorted out.
Review 88:The room was noisy due to the generator in the room next door. The pillows were hard. The hot breakfast did not cater as well as it could for vegetarians. Water seemed to stop running during the early hours so the toilet wouldn't flush.
Review 89:The staff were friendly and the bar/restaurant was good.
Review 90:The service of the receptionist when we arrived extremely early, but she still organised for our rooms to be available given we were trying to be ready for a family wedding. She was very accommodating.
Review 91:Restaurant started closing early. Food good quality and delicious but very small portions for the cost.
Review 92:Staff very friendly Good breakfast and value for money
Review 93:Three reception staff made booking in chaotic. Tea and coffee facility in the room not stocked. Small bed. Only one member of staff on at night (after a world cup rugby match)!?
Review 94:Room size good. Breakfast very good. Staff friendly and obliging.
Review 95:The bed was too small in both width and length. My husband and I are not big people but this bed was just too small. We didn't have a very good nights sleep.
Review 96:We booked this hotel due to the lack of availability of accommodation in Newcastle for the Rugby World Cup. The staff were great! Plus, the room was modern, clean and tidy
Review 97:We were welcomed in a very friendly manner. This continued throughout our stay, everyone was so helpful and pleasant nothing was too much trouble. We will certainly come back again. The food was excellent with a good varied menu. It is in a good situation for sightseeing and is just a short bus journey from Durham city.
Review 98:Great value for money, rooms clean, food great, and staff very approachable and helpful. Usually visit on a work basis but definately consider travelling down for a leisurely stay.
Review 99:Being woke up due to fire alarm and no one being about to say it was ok to go back into rooms very distressing and then no mention of it at reception next morning
Review 100:The convenience of public transport meant no looking for car parks etc. And although we hadn't taken our dog with us it was very nice to see that dogs where welcome not many establishments allow dogs let alone there being free of charge well done
Review 101:Could do with a bathroom upgrade and a hand grip bar to get in and out of the above bath shower. Also shower changed temperature dramatically when other guest's used their facilities
Review 102:Location food and staff all great
Review 103:Being picky, only told we had to make own toast when breakfast delivered. Shower was faulty so would overheat in middle of shower - dangerous. (Forgot to say at checkout - room 23). Wifi didn't work in room.
Review 104:Nice room in courtyard: comfortable bed, big TV in room, nice shower (see "didn't like"), lovely view towards river over fields. Excellent breakfast, convenient for Durham.
Review 105:Nothing
Review 106:We as a group all loved our stay. The rooms were great value. Great comfort. And the cleaners where out in force doing superb work. Even sweeping the paving out front. Food choice was good and was EXCELLENT. Would really recommend this hotel and would stay again.
Review 107:We were out in Durham & got back to hotel at 11:15 pm. The bar was closed, the pumps were switched off. The man in charge didn't know how to access systems (only been there short while) so we had a bottle of alcohol & a spirit with the proviso we paid next day. When we checked out, systems down. We had to let staff know about bar bill.
Review 108:Very comfortable room. Mattress really comfy. Towels lovely & soft.
Review 109:Room keys looked like they were from a dungeon Unreliable wifi and poor phone signal Some parts of the accommodation appeared a bit worn and dated
Review 110:Large-ish room Modern bathroom Friendly staff Parking
Review 111:The staff are genuinely lovely, helpful and go out of the way to ensure guests have a pleasurable stay - the General Manager is fantastic and goes out of his way to help
Review 112:The walls were very thin so you could hear the people next door very clearly
Review 113:The location was perfect for the city centre and the staff were very accommodating as we arrived very late
Review 114:Wifi reception was awful in the room (19). Despite logging in at reception, the iPads dropped out and would not reconnect in the room. Even our iPhones could not get a reasonable signal! Meal in the bar somewhat overshadowed by overly loud singer murdering a range of songs. Was she the reason bar emptied by 9?
Review 115:Location and previous experience there. Value, reasonable food and drink. Very helpful reception and bar!/catering staff.
Review 116:Tiny basic shower room and shower did not work. Towels were frayed and looked past their best. Very small double bed but it was comfortable. It must be cold in courtyard rooms in winter as they offered blankets. I couldn't see any heating. Not walking distance to Durham centre so needed a taxi.
Review 117:Breakfast and free wifi were good. Staff very helpful.
Review 118:Room 2 was a bit noisy at night, I think from heating pump?
Review 119:Good honest value for money accommodation with polite and friendly staff. Interesting menu, nice restaurant.
Review 120:I am not against dogs in an hotel, but I don't appreciate them barking at all hours of the night.
Review 121:I use a mobility scooter and the fasciitis for the disabled are excellent.
Review 122:Faulty toilet that wasn't repaired, probably because it was a weekend and a dirty bed runner.
Review 123:We were made to feel very welcome by the staff and it was an easy journey into Durham City centre. We were offered an alternative room after our second complaint about the faulty toilet.
Review 124:One of the ladies on reception when I checked in seemed a bit sharp, however everyone else was very friendly.
Review 125:In a really nice location and great value for money. Pet friendly which was ideal.
Review 126:It's a shame that staff training lets down what could be a very nice hotel. We asked a waiter what a quesadilla on the menu was, he shrugged his shoulders and said he had no idea, didn't bother to go and find out for us. So we asked the girl at the bar, she looked very annoyed that she had to put herself out and go and ask. She came back and said it's a wrap. When we asked what's in it, she rolled her eyes and flounced off to check. We thought it better not to push when she came back from the kitchen ,after we asked what a Nage was, saying it's a fishy thing. Also, a food deal is not a deal if it's much smaller than the normal portion. It's just paying less to get less.
Review 127:It's rare now to find an old style motel layout, presume it needs a lot of space. However, it's very convenient to be able to park at your door, no need to get everything out of the car.
Review 128:Ordered a newspaper for one day and it came the next. Ooops but apologetic. Breakfast was disappointing. Criossants hard (stale?) and tomatoes raw. We didn't bother on the 2nd morning. But excellent cafe near bus stop in Durham.
Review 129:The staff were very friendly, and helpful the room clean, shower hot and powerful, very adequate for our needs travelling with 2 small dogs. It was very well located for early morning walks without needing a car. The bus service to Durham was excellent, easy and frequent. We could park the car just outside our room motel style which was very convenient.
Review 130:The hotel accepts dogs, which was not made to clear in the hotel information you provided. We would rather not stay in dog friendly hotels, as some dog owners threat them like children and let them use beds and chairs.
Review 131:Very convenient for Durham, bus stops just outside the hotel, service every 10 min.
Review 132:Location good but only if you have a car as nothing near this location. Appalling phone signal and poor wifi.
Review 133:Food excellent but the price reflected this. All staff very helpful and friendly.
Review 134:The rooms situated in the courtyard are quiet and private, and there is allocated parking outside each door. No wandering around long corridors and Only a couple of miles from Durham but surounded by countryside.
Review 135:The wi Fi was a little unreliable, but this was explained to us and apologised for beforehand.
Review 136:We likes the motel style of the hotel... Dinner in the restaurant was enjoyable.
Review 137:The room is not sound proof. The neighbours next door didn't sleep until 2am.
Review 138:Dog friendly. We had meals in the bar area with our dog. There's a spacious woodland trust site for a lovely walk.
