Reviews for Hôtel de France

Review 1:Can't think of much that we didn't like but there is no onsite parking. Hotel is a little difficult to find, especially during the busy holiday season, if not familiar with the area. Local police helped tremendously in guiding us to the hotel in the midst of the Christmas markets.

Review 2:Charming hotel with comfortable beds and although we were on the front of the building, the room was quiet. Staff was cheerful and helpful. Great location if you want to be in the midst of the busiest area of Aix en Provence. Near to restaurants, shopping, etc. Loved our stay.

Review 3:Lovely staff, very helpful, excellent restaurant suggestions from the amazingly brilliant selection offered by Aix en Provence and they even booked them for us. Really excellent rooms, even the small ones, modern, stylish and why aren't all hotel rooms lit as well as this - mot offer just dim lighting. With bars, cafes and restaurants almost spilling into the hotel foyer from the small 'Place', you'd expect a noisy hotel. Not at all. Choose a rear room and peace reigns.

Review 4:Perfect location on a little square with it's own fountain. Staff were friendly and helpful. We were given a map with local restaurant recommendations - and they were fabulous. We tried one and then jut worked our way through the list!

Review 5:The breakfast room was a little impersonal and we felt that as we only wanted a continental breakfast, it was better value to eat out. The hotel is surrounded by cafes and restaurants that offer a continental breakfast at half the price.

Review 6:The hotel was in a brilliant location and was surrounded by nice bars and restaurants which gave the area a nice vibe. Also beside lots of lovely shops in the old quarter of town. The staff in the hotel were extremely friendly and provided us with a map of the centre of Aix en Provence along with advice on places of interest. The Comfort Room which we booked, although compact, was lovely and bright, had a nice en suite shower room, and was spotlessly clean. The hotel was great value for money and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Review 7:on a busy street but lively. thin wall, I can hear guests talking in the near room.

Review 8:Very Nice & Clean and Super Cozy Room, Very Helpful Staff. Very nice breakfast room.

Review 9:street noise even with double glazing, machines starting cleaning outside at 4am. rooms very hott & couldnt open window due to noise

Review 10:location and pleasant staff

Review 11:In spite of 'sound proofing' our room in the front of the hotel was above several bars and was a little noisy into the early hours. Also we were disturbed when the street cleaning started at about 5.00pm. Overall confort was fine in the room, but there was a pronounced nasty smell from the plumbing outlets in the bathroom.

Review 12:Good service at front, desk, comfortable bed and plenty of space for a short visit in the bedroom.

Review 13:The only negative was the drilling that woke us up on 2 consecutive mornings at 8am. It would have been nice to have had some more sleep!

Review 14:Perfect location just around the corner from Cours Mirabeau, the hotel is modern and extremely well kept. Staff were friendly and helpful, always willing to answer any questions. The rooms were very clean and tidy, with excellent shower facilities and extremely comfortable beds. I would stay here again and again and again.

Review 15:I would have liked tea/coffee making facilities in the room.

Review 16:The location was perfect: just a few minutes walk from the Cours Mirabeau and all the amazing restaurants and cafes. The room, although small, was clean and the bed was large and comfy. The shower room was huge and the shower excellent. We were in room 205 at the back so quiet and it had a large window.

Review 17:Our only difficulty was accessibility to the hotel by car with large duffle bags.

Review 18:The location was excellent, right in the heart of the action. We were given a room at the back of the hotel for a good nights sleep as the front rooms can be noisy with bars right outside. The bathroom was modern and clean. Well thought out with plenty of drawer space for toiletries. A huge shower with glass doors which completely cover the shower area. This is so unusual in France.

Review 19:Size of room was really small and no Actual wardrobe apart from a 40cm space by a wall.

Review 20:Location is great as you are right in the centre plus staff were very helpful.

Review 21:Although there was a closet in our room there was nowhere to put our cases and NO luggage racks.

Review 22:We liked the hotels location, the decor. Its has a fabulous bathroom and id very stylish. Gale was particularly helpful and we enjoyed our four days there very much.

Review 23:This is a typical 'boutique' hotel which has had a VERY modern refurb. Ultra modern décor give rooms a stark, cold feeling and you could be anywhere- such a pity in the midst of the warmth and colour of Provence.

Review 24:Excellent central location could not have been better ! Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms immaculately clean.

Review 25:Rooms in need of refurbishment . Picture does not marry up with actual room which was a lot smaller and 215 euros plus breakfast per night is very very overpriced Charged 4.5 euros for small bottle of water!

Review 26:Location

Review 27:Everything was oerfect

Review 28:Excellent service! Marie was extremely accimodating. The location was perfect and a very very nice hotel . I will go again and recommend .

Review 29:We had the junior suite for 3 adults. It was very spacious with a huge bath room, which was a very pleasant surprise. Recently renovated, one can see these were high quality renovations in this room. Definitely above a three star hotel. Would highly recommend.

Review 30:noise & smoke coming into room from bars on tbe Plaza below hotel. Charm room was so tiny we could not even open our bags. Fridge was under closet & desk so to access it you had to remove the trash can, the desk chair, kneel down, literally go under the desk to open fridge. Room door was ajar when we arrived. Room is tiny & good for 1 person. Bathroom is just as small. Lobby was pitiful. As you walk from front desk into elevator you see the broom, dust pan & all cleaning aides stuffed into a corner. One person in fromt desk so if he leaves his post the hotel is open to anyone. Lobby is non existent. It's a shame cause recently upgraded but unfinished.

Review 31:Location right in heart of Aix.

Review 32:Room was warm even though air conditioning was on.

Review 33:The staff were incredibly helpful. Any time we had a question or needed something, they were there. This included everything from printing out our boarding passes to good recommendations on restaurants. The morning we checked out, we were offered coffee for the road!

Review 34:Slightly challenging to find by car, it's down a number of narrow lanes but found it after 10 minutes. There is an electronic bollard that blocked your access to the hotel, just ask the receptionist to lower if you want to park outside to unload luggage. There is a multi-storey car park about 6 mins walk away.

Review 35:Great location in the centre of town. Although there was a busy pub right below my window I was not disturbed, Spacious and attractive room.

Review 36:Keys kept demagnetising.

Review 37:Central location - on a busy street but noise not a problem - closed shutters and curtains at night. Great old French room with sympathetic modern decor. Service polite and unobtrusive. Breakfast in lovely old French room with original paintings.

Review 38:The best hotel where we have ever stayed in Aix. The perfect correlation between the price and the quality. Located in the very centre of the city though it is a quite and comfort place. Wi-Fi was good and fast

Review 39:Standard room was very, very small, so we took an upgrade to a premium room which was large, with plenty of sunshine

Review 40:Locación, Staff And premium room was very nice

Review 41:The door wasn't too sound proof and the location is quite hard to get to by car (due to the one way traffic and pole blocked).

Review 42:Location (though it's centrally located, it has double glass so th noise is still manageable).

Review 43:The room wasn't ready at the check in time with no apology. However, after asking for the second time whether the room was ready, we were upgraded to a very good room that was ready.

Review 44:The location of the hotel and the quality of the accommodation. Short walking distance from the train station and on the edge of the old town.

Review 45:The room was expensive but, in this case, we got what we paid for. Pointof clarification: we misinterpreted the "breakfast included"designation when booking this hotel. We assumed breakfast was includedwith the price of our room but, in fact, breakfast was available on-sitefor an extra charge. We ate breakfast at the hotel one day, it wasoutstanding. The other days we grabbed breakfast elsewhere.

Review 46:My sister and I loved everything about this hotel! In the center of theOld Town in Aix, easy walking distance to all points of interest(including bus station that took us to/from airport in Marseilles),many dining options, very safe even late at night for two ladiestraveling alone! Although the hotel is directly on a very busy squarewhere there were late night events, our room was totally quiet --- weheard nothing! The staff responded immediately to several requests wehad They also made a couple of phone calls on our behalf since neitherof us speaks French.

Review 47:The hotel is located at very convenient place and the room was clean, spacy, and well furnished on excelent condition. The staffs were very nice. Thank you.

Review 48:The AC in the room did not work. So if you are going when the temperature is going to be in the mid to high thirties like it was when we were there, you make sure the AC works. Also if you are driving then park the car first and then drag your bags to the hotel. The hotel is smack in the middle of a pedestrian area with very narrow roads.

Review 49:The room was nice and big. The bathroom was new, massive and well appointed. The location is great.

Review 50:Nothing.

Review 51:Very central. In the heart of the Aix-en-provence's old town/main street which is few stone throw away from selection of best restaurants in the city. The room is small but very comfortable.

Review 52:Tiny room so small it was impossible to walk normally around the bed. The hotel itself is on a very noisy and boisterous square. Our room was at the back so this didn't worry us too much.

Review 53:The restaurant - had dinner there and waited 45 minutes for our main meal. Waiter was excellent very apologetic but the manager ignored us both then and particularly when we left with no attempt to apologise. Kitchen staff didn't appear to be doing much (except talking to friends who kept coming by to have a meal at the kitchen counter which was extremely unprofessional) until we asked where our meal was I ordered risotto which was under cooked and had no truffles. A most disappointing experience.

Review 54:Location in the Diocletian Palace district was perfect. Lenko who greeted us was very helpful giving us excellent information on the highlights of the area. Fabulous room very well appointed but ask if it has 2 levels as bed is upstairs bathroom beliow. Can be awkward at my if not noble.

Review 55:The air conditioned unit did not work properly.

Review 56:It is located right in the center of town, where all the action was going on. We had a room in the back, with a little atrium and the noise did not disturb us at all.

Review 57:I had to ask for the room to be cleaned and the mini bar was not replenished with water, despite the temperate being in the 40's. Compared to other hotels is was expensive. Breakfast was dire. It was next to a bar that stayed open until 2/3 in the morning and you had to run the gauntlet of cigarette smoke every time you walked past.

Review 58:The bed was very comfortable. It was centrally located.

Review 59:The air con wasn't working so the lady at reception put a very good fan in our room, which in this heatwave was a godsend

Review 60:Position was terrific, right in the heart of town. Staff very friendly and helpful, especially when it came to parking, very clean and a good bed

Review 61:Too much noise from the street below even though hotel afvertised insulated rooms. One day I walked into dining room in the early evening to help myself to hot water for my tea. There were 3 -4 guys with girlfriends ( guys had arms around the gals) and were watching a sporting event on a large screen TV). A large guy aproached me , got the hot water as quickly as possible, and in no uncertain terms, gave me the impression that I was an intruder and that he wanted me out of the dining room as quickly as possible. I later inquired and was told that the guys were staff at the hotel and got permission to use the dining room. The whole thing was very unpleasant.

Review 62:I liked the coffee machine.

Review 63:The air conditioning in our room was set at 27 degrees day and night. As it was a heatwave there was no point in opening the windows, plus the mosquitoes were bad. Bedding was a doona (no sheet) suited to 18-20 degrees. When we complained we were told the whole hotel was centrally set at 27 degrees in the owner's instructions. Result was unbearable and we couldn't sleep. Fridge in room also did not work so drinks could not be kept cold. After two nights given a different room where air-con was set at 25 degrees! Still way too hot to sleep. Fridge again didn't work. Staff were very nice but could not help. Wifi kept on dropping out.

Review 64:location and staff

Review 65:The closest car parking is the Rotonde, which costs around 9€ per night. It would be nice if the hotel could offer better pricing.

Review 66:Friendly and helpful staff. Location in the center of Aix. Clean and comfortable room, nicely decorated. An issue came up when one night there was a party on the roof top with loud music until 1am - something that we were not aware of and it prevented us from sleeping. Following to our complaints, we were given a significant discount on our bill as a compensation - which is something highly appreciated.

Review 67:Bedroom and bathroom too small. View from window was into an inner shaft of ugly walls. The photographs of the room on the web greatly flattered the rooms. Breakfast poor and got worse with food not being replenished on several occasions. Overpriced.

Review 68:Close to car park & rail station and at the hub of activities. Lovely receptionist (Gaelle). Clean.

Review 69:If your room is at the front overlooking the square it can be noisy at night (we were on the 3rd floor). Rooms at the rear are very quiet we understand from a fellow guest. Had to ask for toilet rolls on three separate occasions.

Review 70:Greeted by Maria on reception who we saw on most days. She was always very helpful and spent time explaining things to us. Location is excellent. Very close to Cours Mirabeau, La Rotonde and all the old town with its plethora of restaurants. Liked the decor and the way the hotel had been furnished.

Review 71:Highly superficial renovation with floating floor on such a slope on such a small room it made you stumble. Without a whiff of style

Review 72:One female reception staff and new bathroom fit out

Review 73:There is no door for shower room. It is too sexy and not convenient for Asian persons.

Review 74:Hotel is in downtown and wihin university area and easy to go to other places in Paris.

Review 75:Tricky to find - we drove. It would have helped to know before arrival that nearest parking is La Rotonde. Coffee machine at breakfast.

Review 76:Interesting building with lovely mirrored breakfast room.

Review 77:Hard to drive to front door. Parking is two blocks away. Lighting level in room was dim to insufficient.

Review 78:Staff and manager were very helpful, interested and welcoming. Made us feel very comfortable. Good breakfast.

Review 79:We slept too late to check out the breakfast

Review 80:this was a nice design hotel. Very clean, good sized room, large bathroom and bright window. However we didn't feel it was the best value for money one could get in the area. Location was perfect though and the first night we arrived we had a nice drink in the square directly in front of the hotel.

Review 81:This is an efficient hotel very close to La Fontaine de la Rotonde and a number of outdoor cafes and shopping. It's a ten minute walk from the Gare as well. The front desk staff was very helpful when we needed a mishap sorted.

Review 82:The building is old resulting in a slope in the floor or did I just drink too much wine?

Review 83:The bed gave you a great nights sleep. The stall were very friendly and helpful. The location was parallel with the cours Mirabeau.

Review 84:Not all rooms have a view. Mine did not look over courtyard but in the end it was quieter and better for me

Review 85:Staff helpful and friendly and able to speak a bit of English.

Review 86:Really bad wifi, no AC, and the breakfast was not included.

Review 87:Great location and friendly staff. Room looked just like pictures. Website stated that breakfast was included, but it only is for a surplus.

Review 88:Hotel breakfast, old and low quality food!

Review 89:Location of the hotel and the hotel front reception Mr. Eliot who is very helpful and friendly. He gave us the kind service and all tourist information during we stayed there.

Review 90:I wish I could stay 3-4 nights instead of 2

Review 91:Hotel is conveniently located at Rue Espariat a 5min walk from train station (Boulevard Victor Hugo). The ambiance created in the room (high ceilings, pastel colors, linen window treatments, wood flooring, white furniture creates) is amazing. The bathroom is very very clean with lots of amneties from Nuxe and Clarins body lotion. Breakfast is served in an old-world Barroque-Neoclassical room (circa 1750) filled with stucco ceilings, grey colors, boiseries and fancy mirrors). One can easily walk to Cours Mirabeau and other atractions within the city. My room 306 was extremely silent and calm

Review 92:The room was small with one window overlooking an open shaft with junk at the bottom. The pillows were too hard and this room was not worth the 130 Euros it cost me.

Review 93:Obviously, the location.

Review 94:The air conditioning didn't work and other guests had problems too. So it was a choice between the window open with the noise of exterior ventilation fans all night, or being too hot with the window closed. Would not have wanted a street facing room because very noisy with about 7-8 bars and crowds of young people drinking.

Review 95:Nicely decorated room and bathroom, comfortable beds, central location, pretty breakfast room. The building is very old (floor of room was sloping) but has been modernised fairly well.

Review 96:Make sure you ask for a quiet room at the back because there is a 24 hour bar right out the front. This can be very noisy.

Review 97:Central location within walking distance of the bus station. Very compact but clean and modern. It is in a very old building that was renovated just three years ago. Good breakfast optional at 12 euros per person. Friendly staff speak English.

Review 98:The rooms are small but only to be expected. Walls are thin so possible to hear noises from other guests again as expected.

Review 99:The hotel was in central position and a very good price compared with others of the area.

Review 100:The is no free parking for the cars, and the closest parking place is cost 15 euro per day.

Review 101:Great location! The rooms are very small but we didn't need more than that. However, the rooms are clean, quiet, and comfortable. Worth the money.

Review 102:Breakfast room and Hotel's "business" office are in the same room, and the business office part (access to computer, desk etc) is not very nice nor comfortable

Review 103:I first came to this hotel for a business meeting last year. The hotel is very nice and highly recommended, but what makes this place unique for me and my family is the exceptional support and graciousness of Mr. Elias Almaari. I have since been choosing this hotel for both business and leisure trips. There are several hotels that are similar to this one, but coming here and being welcomed warmly by Mr. Almaari makes this place unique. He is very professional, and his advice and willingness to help makes this hotel a very special place.

Review 104:Noisy late at night and early in the morning. Bed too firm for me.

Review 105:Handy for shops and restaurants.Nice bathroom with a good shower. A good breakfast in a pleasant dining room.

Review 106:More pillows in the room would have been good.

Review 107:Location was great right in the centre (quiet rooms available). Rooms small but nice. Great shower with multiple heads. King sized bed. Travel cot provided on request.

Review 108:Bad smell in the entrance hall of the room (sewage pipes?) and room too warm, even in February. After opening the windows and turning off the heater, the room was fine. Some people may find the street cafés noisy.

Review 109:Location, bed, modern bathroom, clean. Did not have breakfast.

Review 110:Very beautiful room clean and lovely furnishings. Staff were courteous and helpful. Made my stay in Aix all the more pleasureable. Liked the wardrobe (walk in) for luggage.

Review 111:On of the younger lady staff members was very unfriendly and not willing to help. Acted upset when we addressed her at the front desk and she had to leave the computer game she was playing. Young blond lady, possibly named Julia.

Review 112:We really enjoyed the location. Made it very easy to tour Aix on foot. Room was large for European Standards. Very Clean Most of the staff was very helpful Even overlooking the Plaza, it was quiet. Elias was excellent helping with dining reservations over the Christmas holiday

Review 113:Probably not a good idea if you have a car.

Review 114:Located just steps from the Cours Mirabeau, the hotel is surrounded by numerous brasseries and the like. My single room, while small, had nice modern furniture, a super comfortable bed and a surprisingly big shower with a great rain shower head. I wanted a quiet room, which I got, not a peep all night. Nice breakfast for 12 Euros with lots of choices and good coffee.

Review 115:The room was a bit small with no place for our luggage; the safe was not fixed in place. These things didn't detract from our positive experience.

Review 116:The location was central; the young staff in particular were friendly & helpful; the breakfast had variety and quality; wifi; comfortable beds; an effective hairdryer; good shower and products; and extra pillows were made available.

Review 117:Sloping floor in the room - but it added to character, the room could be a bit bigger. The breakfast choice did not look very attractive (we did not eat there).

Review 118:Great location in the middle of old town, easy to walk everywhere, a tastefully appointed room, a small bathroom but nice. A comfortable bed. Safety box and wifi in room. Some rooms facing a lively street with restaurants, it could be noisy but ours was fine. An easy walk to train and bus stations. I would stay there again.

Review 119:The situation is perfect. The hotel is old but the rooms are large and have recently been tastefully renovated. The personnel is efficient and welcoming.

Review 120:The staff is friendly. The woman in the breakfast room was lovely and took care of you perfectly. The location is awesome. The rooms are very clean, roomie, and the bed is comfy. The rooms are fully equipped with a blow dryer (a good one), great lotion (Clairins) and soap (Nuxe).

Review 121:Although the hotel in the middle of of a busy area, it is remarquably quiet once inside. A myriad of restaurants and cafes are within very short walking distance.

Review 122:the hotel is located in a very busy pedestrian area. The room is sound-proof but you cannot open the window because the noise is like being in a busy train station, until 4-5 am. There is no parking, you have to roll your bags in heavy traffic to a parking garage. The breakfast is terrible, 12 euros pp and of poor quality.

Review 123:the room and bathroom were modern and comfortable.

Review 124:My BBC and CNN service blinked off after the first night of a four-night stay. The gentleman to whom I complained was not at all interested in my issue. Slightly annoying, but all of the other staff members were so helpful that I won't let his attitude color my impression of Hotel de France.

Review 125:The location of Hotel de France is perfect for walking to sites in Aix. It is just a short walk to the Tourist Office where all sorts of tours can be booked. My room and the public spaces were kept in pristine order. Served in a lovely dining room the breakfast was a sumptuous meal with plenty of satisfying choices. Though the hotel is right in the middle of a lively restaurant scene, my room was quiet.

Review 126:The hotel is a bit overpriced, but I think it's because of the location. I would stay here again regardless.

Review 127:The hotel was very clean; it has a wonderful dining room, but I never ate there given the numerous choices to eat in Aix. i just walked through it once to get coffee. Room was basic but cleaned.

Review 128:The room was very small and noisy. The first night we could not sleep as we could even hear people talking in the next room, plus the bed was very uncomfortable. Not at all value for money.

Review 129:Great location and the room was very clean.

Review 130:The only problem was the the room keys didn't work all the time and had to be re set. The hotel was quick to respond.

Review 131:Central location and nice size modern room. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast was good. I would definitely stay there again.

Review 132:A great hassle trying to find hotel and to discover location of underground parking! As it happened the Rotonde underground parking was near and convenient. Guests should be made aware in advance how to access the Rotonde and the route to the hotel.

Review 133:Convenient location.Quiet room in spite of being in a busy district.

Review 134:We arrived at night and had trouble finding this hotel as you cannot drive to it..pedestrian only, so we had a poor beginning. If you like to be right in the heart of the old city, this is great, but rooms are small and very basic. I wouldn't stay there again.

Review 135:Very central location. Pleasant little square just in front of the hotel. Rooms a bit small, but very practically decorated so that you can efficiently use. Comfortable and pleasent stay.

Review 136:Rooms on the front can be noisy late at night / early morning due to the many pubs and cafés on the street below. No outside area private to the hotel for relaxing with friends.

Review 137:Location, room size, bed comfort

The Fine Print

Please note that bed-type preference must be submitted at least 24 h in advance.
