Reviews for The Wellington
Review 1:Excellent position in the centre of town , a lovely smell of the log fire as you enter , very friendly & helpful staff , good WiFi connection and an excellent breakfast .
Review 2:No bad experience, building was a little tired, hence the due refurbishment. When it.s done it will make it even better.
Review 3:the staff were very friendly and helpfull. the breakfast was very good, a nice choice.
Review 4:Car parking is a bit of an issue.
Review 5:The food was very good value for money, the homemade rack of ribs were excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 6:The room are comfortable but a little tired looking, this didn't impact on our stay and they are good value.
Review 7:Staff great! Very friendly and helpful! Breakfast was fantastic! Best fry up I've ever had and I've had a lot of fry ups! Pub, restaurant very cosy, great food and location and warm friendly staff! We will be back!
Review 8:Every time we rang the lady who answered the phone appeared to be really annoyed that we had called. The room was in an awful state of disrepair- massive damp patches and cracks in the wall. It's really dated, which is a shame as the building is really lovely on the whole. Definitely not worth what we paid for a night!
Review 9:The breakfast was good and the chap who served us was really nice.
Review 10:road side location meant disturbed sleep from people exiting local pubs and clubs
Review 11:Staff were very friendly, accommodating and extremely helpful, great breakfast
Review 12:Wifi wasn't strong. Issues connecting. Washing machine was running past 10pm and I had to call to reception to ask if war possible to have it turned off at I could not sleep. This was done promptly . I was able to settle quick and had a decent sleep.
Review 13:Jade was very friendly and helpful. Staff were approachable and helpful.
Review 14:Room needs a little bit decor TLC
Review 15:Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Bed was really comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and good value for money. Will definitely stay again
Review 16:My bed was not made after the first night; I asked for a hair-drier to be left in my room and eventually had to go down and complain when this wasn't done. Breakfast was very mediocre. Parking is not ideal
Review 17:The noise until 2am was awful with screaming drunks out in the street. No double glazing! The noise was of course not your fault. Not nearly enough milk in the room.
Review 18:Convenience for town and country. Staff were welcoming and helpful.
Review 19:There was no milk for tea or coffee in room and found the heater in bathroom didn't work. And was draft coming from window which I found room to be slightly cold.
Review 20:Everything was lovely x
Review 21:Bit noisy at night (people in town centre outside and our room was in the front of the hotel) and no car park.
Review 22:Comfortable rooms, friendly staff, good food and drink. Loads of character, roaring log fires, armchairs, Rev James on draught. In the centre of town.
Review 23:We had a terrible first nights sleep, because you can hear everything from outside, and because the bed was ridiculously uncomfortable - room 14. We changed rooms the next day, but the new room smelled like a sewer, so we moved to a third room. Wasn't offered any reduction/good will gesture.
Review 24:Location is good, the bar and food was decent, the staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 25:Rooms need updating! Poor decor. Floors has slants which wasn't informed. Cleanliness needs improving. Low score for food hygiene. Breakfast was rushed. Staff were friendly but not always helpful. If the decor is improved and quality of the rooms are improved also, the Wellington would be great.
Review 26:parking.. nightmare - you cannot park in front of the hotel, and even if you want to pay, there is max 1 or 2 hours of staying and then you have too re-park. forget to get a bear before 6!
Review 27:staff extremely nice, polite and helpfull, room clean and nice, good beer in the pub downstairs, as well as nice good size of food served, proper breakfast - even vegi option was good :)
Review 28:We couldn't get the shower to work properly and the water was not very warm throughout the stay. The window would not open.
Review 29:The staff were excellent and the hotel was realistically priced given it is a little dated and needs refurbishment.
Review 30:Sqeaky floorboards, but what can you expect in a hotel that is 200 ish years old!
Review 31:Lovely big rooms and comfy beds. Lovely old Georgian hotel with an amazing old staircase, really nice to feel to the whole hotel
Review 32:Room was cold, the bed was just ok. Paper in room 11 was peeling off the wall with damp.
Review 33:Didn't have a problem parking outside the hotel as long as it was after 5.00 p.m. and you left before 9.00, after that you will have to use the nearby car park.
Review 34:Damp patch on bedroom wall. Paper beginning to come off the wall.
Review 35:A friendly hard working and at times over worked staff. Good breakfast and evening meal. A general relaxed and homely atmosphere of the place.
Review 36:No parking but street parking ok. Rooms dated but functional. Light bulbs missing and kettle switch not working.
Review 37:Very friendly and helpful staff. Food excellent value for money. Relaxed and friendly. Beds very clean and sheets smelt lovely.
Review 38:The parking as there is no parking with the hotel you have to make do with Brecon parking restrictions.
Review 39:The Location was ideal and although our room was on the front by main road it was quiet.
Review 40:Very dated premises. Brains beer not on tap that evening - for a Brains house, that's rather a let down. Waitress took our evening meal order and came back and told us meal not available, with an element out of stock. Upon checking out, had to remind the girl there was a round of drinks booked to the room, which wasn't on the invoice.
Review 41:Outside our room was the fan for the kitchen that turns on every half an hour during the night.
Review 42:The food was fantastic. The staff were friendly & accomodating.
Review 43:Annoying bath and basin plugs which do not function correctly, room 23. One has to use finger nails to lift them up. Breakfast staff could have been more switched on, noting customers are waiting to place order.
Review 44:Central location Brains beers. Nice biscuits in room.
Review 45:The rooms were quite shabby and in need of updating.. ie everywhere needed repainting, wall paper hanging off wall outside our room, bathroom appeared damp and unclean in places, floor representing a public toilet. Although not hotels responsibility we had to get up early every morning and walk a few streets away to renew car park at 8.00am every day.
Review 46:Lovely food.. great value and wide variety to choose from. Friendly staff, beds very comfortable and great to have free wi-fi!
Review 47:The decor is a little dated, with a little brightening up the place would match the friendliness we found in the staff.
Review 48:The staff were absolutely amazing to us, they looked after us as if we lived there.... couldnt do anymore for us. Fantastic team.
Review 49:Room décor was very tired and outdated. Floor was on a slant, although this was quite quaint. Heated towel rail fell off bathroom wall during the night. Food in restaurant wasn't great, a bit too salty.
Review 50:Lovely to have a bath and the water temperature and pressure was excellent. Breakfast also very good.
Review 51:Had a parking ticket when a member of staff told me it was ok to park in a certain car park
Review 52:Spacious and comfortable rooms, no room the same and good view out onto the town square.
Review 53:Car parking. there was no long car parking near the hotel. Nearest about 400 yard away with heavy suitcases a struggle.
Review 54:hotel, food,service, staff good.
Review 55:The car parking information was misleading. When I booked it said that there was no parking there but public parking was possible at a location nearby at £2.20 per day. When we arrived the staff were less than helpful in explaining where this location was. It was not located 'nearby', the price had gone up to £3.20 to be exact (but not their fault) and it was not 24 hour parking. The car park charges started again at 08.00 and breakfast was not until 08.30 (far too late!) so I had to be up and moving the car about before breakfast! The room carpets were filthy and need replacing.
Review 56:Great overall value. Excellent breakfast.Good selection of food for evening meals and decent quality and value. Great real ales.
Review 57:Terrible dated decor, tatty and tired, too few staff, poor reflection of a brains run hotel
Review 58:In a great position beautiful building, terrible decor and design,Brains brewery could do with employing an interior designer to design an interior for this hotel,.
Review 59:The room was of very poor quality and not as advertised on website. We were told booking .com had booked us an economy room whereas I thought I had booked a standard room. We were told the rooms shown on the web were the refurbished ones! This was not made clear on the website so we feel it was misrepresented. There was no lift - but again the staff were helpful. No parking so had to leave early to put in parking fees at local car park - not good when weather is poor!
Review 60:The staff were very helpful polite and friendly - the best part of our stay
Review 61:We found it VERY noisy,we arrived on a Saturday, (bad idea) as all night long people were hanging out outside the Wellington, talking, laughing, shouting & swearing, it was a complete nightmare especially as we had a full day of horse riding the next day. The noise finally stopped at 3.30 in the morning. We found the Wellington badly in need of repair, it had definitely not been maintained for a long time. We thought it dark & dreary, even though it's old it should seem cheerful & welcoming.
Review 62:Breakfast was great, staff were friendly. Room was adaquate.
Review 63:nothing not to like, town centre so lots of activity outside till late, but only to be expected so no real problem
Review 64:Excellent, jazz festival weekend, right in the town centre, clean room, friendly helpful staff, fantastic cooked breakfast
Review 65:Not really a problem on this occasion but car parking would appear to be a problem on another occasion
Review 66:Perfect location for Brecon Jazz Friendly, helpful staff
Review 67:Undercooked breakfast, second day waited over half hour for breakfast and then another 15 mins before the waitress reappeared to get some sauce.
Review 68:Location was good
Review 69:Bedside lamp with no bulb in it and very dated room. They need a lift . We had a lot of stairs to climb to our room and no offer of help with luggage.
Review 70:Breakfast really good
Review 71:Bedroom was too hot. Stairs to top floor were very steep. Housekeeping service needs improving.
Review 72:Kev, waiter, was very helpful. Excellent value for money. They accommodated our request for early breakfast. Central location for both town and touring area.
Review 73:The room was at an angle and gave you a headache - a constant sideways angle. It badly needed refurbishment and was dusty, the bed very uncomfortable.
Review 74:The staff were very kind and welcoming and allowed us to check in late on the Friday ... The breakfast in the morning and was very good and quick and they made the effort to get us special gluten free options.
Review 75:It was good to have a nice meal and comfortable room for our stay - a shame it was on the second floor as my husband really struggled with the stairs and there was no lift
Review 76:Parking is a nightmare, though once I found the right place it was fine. (Tip - you can park outside the hotel in the street from 5pm until 9am, so get up & go). Decoration was a bit tired
Review 77:Right in the middle of town, by restaurants etc.
Review 78:A very tired hotel in need if renovation urgently. Asked for a quiet room when I made the bookings . Had I quiet room and 1 room over the front door and on a Saturday night it was nosey.
Review 79:Location good staff were accommodating with early breakfast
Review 80:No car parking at hotel. We had to park some distance from hotel and move car as only short stay. Car left overnight in dark car park next to derelict building
Review 81:Central location and good food.
Review 82:We were on the upper floor I prefer the lower floors but this did not detract from an enjoyable stay
Review 83:Good location, clean with very friendly staff. We stayed for only one night but enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and staff. The bed was comfortable and the room and bathroom very clean
Review 84:Room had very bad damp smell when we went in and window was open, dampwas causing a problem in the upper left corner above the window wherepaper was coming off the wall and damp black maks were clear to see.
Review 85:Hotel was perfectly situated for our need, staff were friendly, brakfastwas good and room was clean.
Review 86:The walls were damp and there were cracks in the wall. I booked a twin on Booking .com but was given a double room we were two female friends!
Review 87:The staff were so friendly and helpful. The location was perfect and having a front door and being able to gain access to the hotel after the club was great. The shower was nice.
Review 88:No controller for TV in the room, when ask where it was,the answer was a other guest must have stole it,no sorry,no we will replace TV ,no reduction in room price ,basically tough,
Review 89:Meals except breakfast
Review 90:a lovely breakfast every morning, served by a very honest young blonde girl, my wife left her handbag behind one morning, with in ten minuets she brought it to our room. nice to have staff like that.
Review 91:There were no towels, no remote control, no hair dryer, toilet roll holder was the other side of the room to the toilet, nowhere to hang towels once we got did get them. Wifi dropped out a lot
Review 92:Was in the heart of town, staff were very friendly, bed was comfy
Review 93:Checking in and finding dirty sheets and towels were the room hadn't been serviced. the cleanliness and décor of the room was sadly lacking. If it had been clean perhaps we wouldn't have noticed the decor
Review 94:The location was brilliant
Review 95:Breakfast and booking out are a bit late if you want a early start Parking can be tricky
Review 96:Location is great, easy to find (hard to miss) Great to have your evening meal aswell
Review 97:1. The website advertises "fee parking nearby". There isn't any and the staff on duty seemed ignorant of an arrangement whereby customers could be provided with a windscreen display ticket to enable overnight parking until 11.00am. We were told about this by an employee of the local council refuse collection team! 2. The lock to our room was faulty. 3. The staircase was so badly lit that I nearly fell down the flight of stairs. 4. Most of the light fittings had bulbs out or missing. 5. The floor in the bar was littered in the evening and was not cleared by breakfast the following morning. 6. Although the food menu included gluten free options, no gluten free bread was available for breakfast. (in excusable in this day and age when every supermarket stocks this!). 7. No sign of any management. Staff on duty were generally incompetent and ignorant of the meaning of customer service (apart from the young lady on duty at breakfast time on Saturday morning) 8. Inferior breakfast products. 9, We were on the to floor and it took 5 minutes to get any hot water. 10, For what we actually got, this establishment is overpriced. Within 50 miles it is possible to have a suite, with free onsite car parking and excellent food for only another £15 per room per night)
Review 98:The time spent with the family members we had arranged to meet there
Review 99:Having booked several months ago we were placed in the farthest room in the hotel the wifi was unavailable because of the distance and the lady who we presumed was the manager was surly and unhelpful
Review 100:The Breakfast
Review 101:The room was not very clean and looked shabby. Unfortunately we had a really noisy night (it was a Friday night though) with lots of shouting in the street outside until about 4am.
Review 102:Good breakfast. We also eat downstairs in the evening which was good value for money and nice food. Staff were helpful.
Review 103:A hairdryer would have been welcome.Hotel is faded glory- a coat of paint or refurb?
Review 104:Large room ,excellent breakfast .Cheerful staff especially the long blonde haired waitress who is very friendly.Male staff not so cheerful.
Review 105:In the room we were allocated, several of the lights didn't work and there was no remote control for the television. We were moved, without question, to another, larger room. The public areas of the hotel were well-kept, but both bedrooms we saw were quite basic and in need of decoration - the decor was somewhat 'tired'. For the price, the quality of the accommodation was not up to standard.
Review 106:The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast very good.
Review 107:Location ideal for our needs: good for restaurants and good for meeting up with local friends joining us for the evening. Bedrooms were fine and the TV excellent for following the election results.
Review 108:room 23 is very small and very warm. on opening the window you are greeted by the extract exhaust from both the kitchen and cellar. Contrary to popular belief these run constantly during the day and night. This did not make for a good night's sleep.
Review 109:friendly staff, excellent food and good position for exploring.
Review 110:Room really shabby, only 2 rating for food hygiene but meals we ate seemed good No parking
Review 111:Location, looked good from outside. Really popular so busy. Nice breakfast but seemed under staffed
Review 112:No complaints. Room was a little basic and in need of modernising, but that's no complaint. Will stay again the next time we book to see a show in the theatre.
Review 113:Fantastic central location, only a 2 minute walk to the theatre. Really friendly, helpful staff. Lovely breakfast and excellent value for money.
Review 114:Some things could have been a bit cleaner, food hygiene rating was 2 (out of 5) - which probably was accurate. Bed was a bit too soft for my liking. Wifi was there but not always predictable/strong enough to be used.
Review 115:I liked the accessibility: bus stops just in front, busstop/interchange is easy to reach. Room was not too big but effective. Tea and coffee making facilities were good; good choice of food in restaurant. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Restaurant was busy: many locals.
Review 116:No comfy sofas to sit in,evening time. Staff friendly though. felt more like being in a pub. Bed and breakfast very good, but I wouldn't class it as a hotel type stay. Ok, not the Hilton, but very good.
Review 117:It was so clean. immaculate. Beautiful shiny polished bath and sink in my room.Felt just like being in my own home.
Review 118:It was a bit confusing to know where to park that was safe over night, but the hotel face us a slip that we could display in the car Lots of stairs!
Review 119:The location of this hotel is superb, making it an ideal base to visit brecon on foot. The staff were very helpful in giving us guidance to find the places we needed
Review 120:It was just a quick stop. Clearly the Wellington has been an historic building in its time, and it is clean and tidy. The price was good, the staff were great, and the full English breakfast is fantastic. I never did get any wifi in the hotel, which was a shame, but all in all, value for money.
Review 121:Would have liked a lift being on the top floor to carry up all the cases.
Review 122:We were a party of 7 friends and thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 123:Not luxurious or particularly special. Lacking a hair drier. Creaky floorboards. What felt like an old mattress.
Review 124:Big room, friendly staff, good location, good pub food
Review 125:Con: If I skip past the over-powering smell of kippers as we entered the hotel and get straight to the room. I was disappointed to say the least. The previous occupants visit was still apparent by the huge skid marks left in the toilet, likewise the soap scum tide mark in the bath was evidence of a previous visitor. The was little presence of the cleaner having visited though when we spied the spat remains of toothpaste upon the sink tap, as well as the black grime ring around the base of the tarnished taps. The presence of black mould around the corners of the bath was alarming, as was the long string cob-web hanging in the bed room. A TV was provided, but the remote control was nowhere to be seen, a bind when you want to change channel but don't fancy getting from under the summer quilt (in February) to walk barefoot across the stained carpet in the cold. The dated decor can be forgiven, however the lack of noise insulation was irritating, we could hear next doors TV (perhaps they had no remote either and couldn't be bothered to get out to turn it down..) as well as all the outside noise. Don't think we'll visit this one again...
Review 126:Pro: I have to say that the staff at the hotel were friendly and polite. The breakfast was good and the service was quick and efficient. The price was really competitive and location couldn't have been better for a trip walking Pen Y Fan.
Review 127:A lovely hotel in a lovely location of Brecon. The Sunday dinner was beautiful, really friendly and helpful staff, the rooms had just what you needed and were clean. Breakfast was also really nice, served fresh to you unlike these buffet style ones where your food has probably been sitting there for hours. Would definitely recommend and go back to the Wellington ☺
Review 128:Car parking bit of a niuisance as had to move car/feed meter at 8am. Could the hotel reserve a couple of spaces in the car park for their guests? Don't mind paying for it.
Review 129:Helpful staff. Spacious room with all the expected facilities, but also bottled water. Good choice of food for the evening, including veggie options. Lovely fresh breakfast
Review 130:Bathroom in urgent need of repair, flush handle falling off, radiator didn't work in bathroom either. Floor boards inside and outside room very noisy. Value for money? not really, we have recently stayed at the Thisltle in Cardiff for same price, there's no comparison I'm afraid.
Review 131:Once room was warm, the bed was comfy. The breakfast was superb. Best part of the stay. location in town centre suited us fine.
Review 132:It was a cold period and the room was difficult to keep warm and the TV remote control was missing.
Review 133:The staff were very good and service was of a good standard. This is a town centre location and there is parking nearby. While it is not luxury accommodation since it is an old buidling it is good value for money for straightforward accommodation and food.
Review 134:The pub food that was available in the evenings was of average quality and a little overpriced, although the service was very good. Parking is a problem, but we managed to park in front of the hotel overnight on both nights, having moved our car from the public car park down the road.
Review 135:The staff were helpful and friendly, the bed was very comfortable and the room was warm and cosy - after we asked the staff to help us with turning the radiator on, which they did straight away. Breakfast was good.
Review 136:No parking at all and not clearly stated on the website. The staircases especially after the first landing were very steep and not really appropriate for someone, like me, who has increasingly difficulty in climbing stairs. No warning about that either.
Review 137:Convenience to the centre of Brecon. Comfortable room with good en-suite facilities. Breakfast provision adequate but better 2nd day when different staff on duty
Review 138:The room needed a lot of work done to it. There was a new toilet and wash hand basin, but the shower wasn't very good. You couldn't change the position and it seemed to point into the wall rather than over the bath. There was a lot of dust around the bath in the grouting. It all needed redecorating and updating. having said that it didn't spoil our stay.
Review 139:The staff were really friendly and very helpful. the food was very good especially the breakfast. all the food was served quickly and arrived hot, good value for money. Really good location. We would certainly stay here again and recommend it to friends.
Review 140:The cracks in the walls and ceiling in our room. The damp spot and peeling lining paper in the room. The food was shocking, we had a child's hamburger and the leather shoes i was wearing were more tender than the meat. No hot water, was only ever tepid at best! No main reception area. We had to wait while the person behind the counter took meal orders before we could check in. Generally, a pretty poor hotel. The rooms need an urgent remodel ie cracks filled, rooms need paint urgently and the hot water needs to be looked at so people can have decent showers or bath! Would not stay there again until repairs have been done.
The Fine Print
The hotel is completely non-smoking throughout and the hotel will charge a fine for those who breach this policy.
