Reviews for Kings Lodge Hotel

Review 1:Could benefit from blackout blinds at the front as a lot of light in bedroom. Also a shame the residents' lounge closed at 7pm.

Review 2:Comfortable, warm, clean and welcoming hotel with excellent popular restaurant attached.

Review 3:Very convenient location - close to city attractions but far enough away to be quiet. Staff friendly, polite and hard-working. Pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Review 4:The car park could do with one more light at the side of the buidling by the front steps

Review 5:Very welcoming and helpful on arrival Clean comfortable and warm Food good for breakfast Haven't dined there but others who have report very good food

Review 6:I'm possibly the coldest person in the world all the time, so it may have been me, but my room was on the cooler side, I would have liked to have been able to turn the radiator up or had the window closed before arriving.

Review 7:Staff were lovely, there was a private function in the restaurant so they set up a table and served me dinner without a reservation in the bar area. Very attentive, good food and the overall area was safe and room was clean & tidy. If you don't mind birds singing around your window or a creaky bed, give it a try! I opted for a cooked breakfast and it was lovely.

Review 8:Nothing to report

Review 9:Good location. Rooms small but clean, comfortable and adequate. Pleasant man on reception. Attached to a comfortable bar and excellant restaurant.

Review 10:Television in room was decidedly annoying in that it kept losing its signal and was tricky to watch comfortably because of where it was on the wall. Cups in bedroom too small in which to make a decent cup of tea or coffee.

Review 11:Peaceful setting, good sized, clean room and bathroom. Nice beakfasts. Pleasant staff.

Review 12:Getting a breakfast cooked to order seems a rarity these days. Having a full English with a pot of tea served to you at your table was a very pleasing experience. The food was great! The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. The Kingslodge is well worth a stay and is great value too.

Review 13:The breakfast was very basic, which is perplexing given how sophisticated the food is in the same restaurant at lunch and dinner.

Review 14:Very helpful and friendly staff, clean/comfortable/homely room, great food in the restaurant and excellent location. I would recommend to anyone who wants walking access to the City but with a modicum of peace and tranquility.

Review 15:Durham city people a little drunk and aggressive, looking for trouble slight air of menace about the drunken locals. Students much better behaved than locals.

Review 16:Good welcome.

Review 17:If I were to be critical, I'm not usually not, the decor is a little old fashioned, but that's being picky.

Review 18:Quiet location with the infrequent distant noise of a passing train, which I liked. The room was clean and a decent shower. The breakfast was tasty and quick to the table.

Review 19:The single room I got was small and quite old-fashioned, and I felt did not warrant the price. The TV system is poor - screen is small and signal was lost quite frequently so if you want to watch something on BBC it is better to use i-Player on the wifi. It was not feasible to use the desk for any length of time because the design of the desk makes it impossible to sit comfortably with knees under the desk. I had to go down to the bar to be able to work in comfort. The main East coast railway line through Durham passes about 200m from the hotel; the noise is noticeable, but not intrusive most of the time.

Review 20:This is a nice small hotel with a good bar/pub and excellent restaurant (the latter apparently moving soon). Ten minutes walk from the centre of Durham (passing two excellent sources of good beer - the Bridge Hotel and the Station House). Five minutes walk from Durham railway station. Wifi is good, although Youtube and other such large drains on the bandwidth are not allowed. Breakfast is good, served in the restaurant. The standard of rooms varies a lot. I got a small tired room while other rooms are larger and more modern. There is a dearth of hotel rooms in Durham so it will be a shame if this hotel disappears to become student accommodation.

Review 21:Disappointed that the hotel's restaurant was full on both nights of our stay despite trying to pre-book as advised.

Review 22:The hotel was conveniently placed for walking into the centre of Durham. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy. All in all we were very happy!

Review 23:Room was very warm but would rather it was a bit warm than too cold so not a major problem.

Review 24:Room was good size and very clean & tidy. Only a short 10 minute walk into city centre.

Review 25:My single bed was uncomfortable because it sloped on one side and was rather hard. Being very tired I was in bed trying to sleep from 10.30pm but there was lots of noise from people coming and going to Finbarrs restaurant until after midnight. Noisy lorries started delivering goods right outside my room from 06.15am, so I wouldn't recommend this hotel unless you are a very heavy sleeper.

Review 26:The staff were very friendly and helpful, thank you! Breakfast was quite nice and served in a very attractive dining room, The Christmas decorations looked lovely!,

Review 27:Unfriendly staff in the breakfast room. My breakfast got less day by day? I coule hear every step from my neighbours on the side, very small bathroom, soft and noisy bed

Review 28:The Location Quiet surroundings

Review 29:Nice small hotel, a few minutes walk from Durham centre. Plenty parking available. Pleasant efficient staff. Our room was comfortable, breakfast was good. Ate in attached restaurant, (Finbarrs) on Saturday night, it was a really good meal. Booking recommended as it was very busy.

Review 30:Said slightly 'tongue in cheek' better quality breakfast coffee & toaster would have been welcome ! However this wasn't really too much of an issue.

Review 31:All the staff were all so helpful & friendly towards us. We had a wonderful stay in he hotel & would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. The breakfast was excellent & we ate in the bar every evening as it was such good value with pleasant surroundings. The Xmas decorations were very tasteful.

Review 32:The location was great for exploring Durham. The bar area was great for relaxing in for a drink after a full day out and about. The breakfast was very good and set us up for the day

Review 33:Poor service by breakfast staff in restaurant. Dated bedroom decor and fittings.

Review 34:Easy walking distance to Durham and access to an excellent restaurant. Welcoming and efficient reception staff.

Review 35:The bar and restaurant are franchised out and are very expensive this meant we had to venture out to eat in very inclement weather.

Review 36:Friendliness of staff,and location.

Review 37:Overall excellent - just that the pillows were either too thin or overstuffed (and doubling up the thin ones didn't work), so I didn't have a great night's sleep but I wasn't going to trouble anyone via the emergency mobile just for that. And all the other things more than made up for that niggle, so all I have to do is remember to ask them about it next time before reception goes off duty at 9pm. The guest lounge is only open until 7pm, although the bar - which was quiet the evening I was there, so there was plenty of sofa space - is open until around 11pm.

Review 38:Fantastic location very close to the station (and my son's uni accommodation). Welcoming young man on reception who was also helpful with my advance enquiries. Great bar, quite smart but comfortable, with a telly, sofas and tables (I think they do bar snacks). Room 9 was spacious, with a desk to work at, and both room and bathroom were extremely clean. I always judge breakfasts by the poached eggs and mushrooms (I'm a vegetarian), and they were perfect.

Review 39:Bathroom sash windows were stuck open and could not be closed while outside tempertures were below freezing in both rooms we were offered. Very part time reception in the evening so no-one availble to sort this out. Why had no-one identified this issue and done something about it? (Bill was however reduced by £10) Heating clearly timed so that none available during the night, despite cold weather. Be aware, full breakfast is chargeable at £9.50. Continental only included in B and B price.

Review 40:Excellent neighbouring restaurant (different business).

Review 41:blue bottles in room no heating in bathroom ....and room very cold spoke to reception on leaving about the blue bottles in room reply ....oh yes there not nice are they ....not really acceptable ....ask if heating could b put on in bar was told they could not control heating very dissatisfied and disappointed with hotel november we stay very cold

Review 42:nice bar area and dining area

Review 43:Only problem was I couldn't access the wifi at all, despite being given the code.

Review 44:Nice friendly and welcoming hotel, very close to the station and a short walk from the city centre. Rooms clean and comfortable with decent facilities. It's also very quiet at night.

Review 45:Noise bin lorry arriving too early in the morning! Breakfast - under cooked poached eggs, sent back and another 2 undercooked eggs were sent out. No plain yogurt, no prunes, fruit salad just whole fruit!

Review 46:Out of town close enough to walk into the city Monday supper special menu. Great value

Review 47:It is a green and peaceful location; easy to walk to everywhere in Durham, and very convenient for the station. Finnbar's restaurant co-located there is excellent for evening dinners and breakfast. The staff could not be more helpful and give excellent service both in hotel and restaurant.

Review 48:Only problem was violently noisy couple in the next room, apparently having a domestic, really scary. Presume I was unlucky, thus was a one off, and that could have happened anywhere. Colleagues further up the corridor didn't hear a thing.

Review 49:Excellent location for walking in both city and countryside. Flass vale nature reserve an unexpected bonus, and really easy walk from/to station.

Review 50:What's not to like?

Review 51:Beautiful hotel in gorgeous country setting but right on the edge of city centre. Closer to town than it gives itself credit for. Loved it and will be returning!

Review 52:Nothing

Review 53:The hotel is in a really convenient location , very close to the centre of Durham but in a quiet area. Good car park, excellent room, excellent staff and breakfast . We will definitely stay again.

Review 54:Although there was no one else in the bar, I was totally ignored whilst standing for a full 5 minutes at the bar, waiting to be served. Normally I would have made anissue of this but I was struck dumb by the ignorance and rudness of the barman.

Review 55:Location and parking

Review 56:Staff were very friendly and helpful- we visited Durham to see the Lumiere festival and the hotel rang us the day before to tell us of road closures. Also the only room available to book was a family room- more expensive than a double but when we arrived we were told that breakfast would be free because there were only two of us in the room.

Review 57:This hotel was comfortable and clean. I was in a single room which was extremely spacious. The staff were very helpful and went out of their way to help me with a parcel I needed to courier.

Review 58:Very noisy room cleaning the following morning. They also walked into the room while we in bed. Trains can also be quite loud. Overall ok. Little pricey for what it was. £75 max I'd say

Review 59:Great location

Review 60:The restaurant was excellent and provided a very different eating experience in relaxing surroundings. Staff were very helpful and friendly, would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Review 61:Although the hotel was comfortable, clean and comfortable the decor could do with an update in style but very good forbye that which is personal taste.

Review 62:The Kings Lodge is 5 minutes from the train station and central Durham and the cathedral is only 10-15mins away. The hotels restaurant Finbars was excellent. No plain hotel food here!

Review 63:Squeaky door hinges, could use a little oil I think!

Review 64:Excellent location, just a short walk from the station and town centre. You can be at the cathedral in about 20 minutes at average walking pace. Breakfast was lovely, my mummy said it was the best she's ever had in a hotel. Cosy rooms.

Review 65:The single beds for my daughter and I were terrible, those matresses should have been changes ages ago, and replaced with a proper quality for the room price

Review 66:Pleasant atmosphere, Bar ok, but lacked atmosphere and better sense of comfort, restaurant not suitable for breakfast in the sense that they keep it very much as it is for dinner as a successful venue Room was good size, view over the car park, but the rear view was probably not as good as that either, not sure.

Review 67:Nothing really was good value for money.

Review 68:Room nice and clean. Was far enough outside Durham centre to walk. Near train station for commute to Newcastle and North East. Lovely autumn walking scenery and an amazing viaduct for any train spotters.

Review 69:We had some difficulty in finding the hotel, which is somewhat tucked away, although reception was helpful on the phone in providing directions.

Review 70:The on-site restaurant was very good. The location was quiet, and on-site parking was provided.

Review 71:Bit of a trek from the centre of town, bunch of drunk people carousing at 1am next door room, but that's not your fault!

Review 72:Lovely welcome, good value, nice setting.

Review 73:There is no reception between midnight and the morning. That was not a big problem for us apart from one night that our neighbors were exceptionally noisy (knocking on their room door did not help either!)

Review 74:We really liked the location of this hotel - it is a 2 mins walk from the train station but close to anything you will want to see in Durham. Hotel contacted us prior to our arrival to make sure we will be able to check-in easily. Room was really good with a garden view.

Review 75:Nothing bad but one or two niggles about room which I told staff about. We wondered why no tinned grapefruit at breakfast.

Review 76:Very lovely building in excellent location. Really liked the bar and Louis. Staff exceptionally helpful.

Review 77:Very convenient location with ample parking, attractive semi-rural surroundings even though easy walking distance from station and town. Friendly and homely, good restaurant.

Review 78:1. Cleaning staff very vociferous and clearly had a gripe. 2. Very poor breakfast choice. 3. Rooms could be noisy depending on neighbouring occupants.

Review 79:Location.

Review 80:Not bad experience, but my single room didn't have an easy chair, and the upright chair didn't allow me to fit my knees under the desk. But these are minor quibbles!

Review 81:Friendly staff; good breakfast.

Review 82:Fabulously situated in a quiet part of Durham and only 10 minute walk into the city. Very comfortable room and beautifully clean with all you need for a relaxing stay. Full English breakfast all freshly cooked for only £5. Will definitely be returning.

Review 83:Carpet needed cleaning in room, also TV to high in room to watch in comfort. No bowls of fruit for breakfast, what there was was not ripe. Had to ask for anything like natural yoghurt.

Review 84:The Lounge, Restaurant and Bar Cooked part of breakfast very good.

Review 85:one of the beds was uncomfortable with loud creaky springs, and the room was very small. would have expected higher quality overall for the price.

Review 86:the location was great, just ten mins walk from the city centre, and the restaurant attached to the hotel was fantastic

Review 87:The housekeeping staff talking loud in the morning while we were still trying to sleep

Review 88:The location was in a brilliant place not far from the city centre

Review 89:Room very small, approx 12ft X 9ft, no room to move with two beds in room. Nowhere to put cases. No soap in shower room. Paint flaking off toilet seat. Everything very tired and run down. Very poor value for money.

Review 90:Handy for Durham city.

Review 91:Nothing really, I would have preffered a firmer matress but the bed was OK really.

Review 92:Friendly staff and helpful advice. Small but adequate room with good facilities. Good middle range restaurant attached which served a good hotel breakfast. Excellent location 10 minutes walk into city centre, 5 minutes walk to rail station.

Review 93:Nothing at all to complain about.

Review 94:Very friendly staff with a short w.alk from the train station and into town. The restaurant was perfect for breakfast and provided the ideal location for a special family meal

Review 95:No bar snacks or food in the afternoon after a 250 mile drive bar staff very dissmissive very disappointed. The bed was very uncomfortable. Not a hotel for disabled or people with walking issues .we left a day earlier than planned.

Review 96:The bulk of the staff were friendly and the breakfast was very good.

Review 97:We have stayed several times before but room 20 was very disappointing, very small, pokey and stuffy,It is unlikelywe will stay again,

Review 98:Easy to find and good stroll at the back of the hotel

Review 99:The bed was very uncomfortable, no fitted sheets and the breakfast was very poor in service and choice.

Review 100:It was fairly close to city centre and car hire

Review 101:I was woken at 6.45am on a Saturday morning by the sound from a nearby room of noisy juddering pipes. The hotel's plumbing could do with an overhaul, methinks!

Review 102:Location, parking, basic comfort

Review 103:No lift. May not suit travellers with bulky luggage.

Review 104:Clean, cozy and well kept. Convenient location close to the railway station. Nice dinner and breakfast at Finbarr's Restaurant.

Review 105:It is a little bit far from my daughter's college on the hill.

Review 106:I arrived in Durham so late, about midnight, and it was raining heavily. The staff of this hotel, called John, was so considerate. He came to the station and picked us up. After check-in, he sent my daughter to her college. It was too late to take taxi and he asked my daughter if she needed some help. So considerate and thanks so much! The breakfast is nice but a little bit expensive. The room is very clean and the garden is so beautiful. It is very peaceful.

Review 107:Our map and actually being on the road, was a challenge to find The Kings Lodge.

Review 108:Your friendly, cleaning staff, deserved a pat on their backs for doing a nice job at keeping our room comfortable and clean. They work behind the scenes, and I felt that they need a wee bit of recognition of a great job!!! :)

Review 109:We had room 11 and unfortunately could hear every word spoken and sound by people in the next room. Not at all relaxing !!

Review 110:Restaurant and staff very presentable, plus excellent food.

Review 111:The staff were helpful and pleasant. The room was a family room and we had lots of room to move around. We had a evening meal which was very nice and good value for money.

Review 112:Food in the restaurant, while very good, was pricey.

Review 113:Ideal location - very seldom you find a hotel in comfortable walking distance of a city centre that also has plenty of parking.

Review 114:Unfortunately our first night was spoilt by having noisy neighbours, banging doors and using bad language. When I asked if there were any other rooms available,I was simply told "no" before the smart phone became the focus of attention again. However, all other staff were very professional.

Review 115:Really good location. Clean, and a pleasant feel to the hotel.

Review 116:I could hear guests in other rooms

Review 117:The Boutique decor of the hotel. The hotel is within walking distance of the railway station and also the town centre

Review 118:Having to leave after one night's stay. (It was only a two day visit).

Review 119:Situation of hotel was brilliant as we could walk around Durham. The food was excellent especially the steak!

Review 120:Rooms were very clean, only downside was we thought the room was a little dated, but I understand they are to be updated.

Review 121:The staff were excellent, from checking in to checking out. Location is excellent, an easy 10/15 minutes into the centre of Durham. We didn't eat in the restaurant apart from cooked breakfast which we couldn't fault. Free on site parking and wifi is a bonus.

Review 122:Good location with parking. Only a short walk into the town. Breakfast was really nice. Although on the small side the room and bathroom were very clean and well stocked.

Review 123:Being awoken at 5.30 one morning and 4.25am the third and final morning by refuse collection of the hotel bars empty bottles. Staff weren't interested and didn't seem bothered at all

Review 124:Excellent location, beautiful city and convenient

Review 125:A girlfriend and I had a wonderful stay here at the Kings Lodge Hotel, location was an easy walk into town for sightseeing and since we'd arrived by motorbikes, we found the carparking facilities very secure. Was great to be able to return in the evening and have a couple of drinks from the bar in comfortable seats/sofa. Breakfast had a good choice of foods on offer.

Review 126:Generally overheated & room a tad stuffy. Not sure - given space in the bathroom - why no bath option?

Review 127:Outstanding location & quite easy to find. Excellent shower & good space in bathroom.

Review 128:Breakfast was limited. Had to wait approximately 20 minutes for fresh croissant . Partner had already finished his breakfast by then!

Review 129:Nice quiet location easy walk into city

Review 130:Very poor mobile phone signal and no lift.

Review 131:Very good wi-fi signal, excellent restaurant, friendly staff, good location within a few minutes walk from town centre.

Review 132:Room could have been cleaner, far too hot, no air con. Bed needed a new mattress, was noisy as other guests arrived and were drinking and making a loud noise in the garden below the bedrooms.

Review 133:Nice location near all amenities, well decorated room and lovely shower room.

Review 134:Could do with a chair or two in the room - although our room was a bit small for two chairs.

Review 135:Good hotel in good location in the City with plenty of parking

Review 136:Shower in room 20 was too small.Door hinging was wrong.

Review 137:Friendly and respectful staff, especially in the restaurant. Good location for short walk to town.
