Reviews for The Great Western
Review 1:The mattress was lacking a topper or near the end of its life!
Review 2:Pleasing decor in the room. Breakfast was cooked to order and excellent. Coffee was also very good.
Review 3:There was nothing so bad as to be awful. However, if we could offer some constructive suggestions to the venue we would have appreciated the bed being made and the room hoovered/cleaned each day. Noise levels within the building weren't good but, as it is an old building with creaky floors I guess that it is difficult to overcome that aspect. Finally, the WiFi connection was extremely poor.
Review 4:The staff/customer service was friendly, helpful and extremely obliging. We would give 10 out o 10 for that. The en-suite was a reasonable size and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable. The cooked breakfast was ample and filling. The location was superb - 5 minutes walk from the train station and 10 - 15 minutes walk from the town centre.
Review 5:The bedroom door didn't lock from the inside, we reported it but was told to wiggle the key, as no one had complains before! Had to wedge a chair under it
Review 6:The staff very very friendly
Review 7:There were cobwebs on the ceiling, the light in bathroom did not work, mould in the shower, the bed was extremely uncomfortable.
Review 8:The young gent in charge was friendly and helpful, could not fault him
Review 9:The building is run down, all areas are dirty specially so the room, there were stains on walls, bathroom was dirty, shower was broken, mattresses very uncomfortable and on Saturday night there was karaoke on the bar until 1 a.m.
Review 10:The staff were friendly and offered to help
Review 11:My wife, daughter and I are covered in insect bites after staying in this hotel. The shower had mould and the carpets were very dirty. I would not recommend1
Review 12:The staff were friendly
Review 13:the beds, they were ok for one night
Review 14:friendly staff everything is old but all you needed was there allthough near station, it didn't give a lot of noise the locals come here for drinks
Review 15:Triple en-suite room clean, comfortable and quiet, really good value. Hadn't expected such a good breakfast for the price we paid. Sean went out of his way to make us feel welcome.
Review 16:We booked unseen online, and probably would not have booked had we first visited. We were not aware that the 'hotel' was also a 'backpacker' establishment, and that the breakfast service was as one would expect for the latter. For the price it fell short on presentation, although our en-suite room was clean and bright. One major thing is a dislike of seeing a huge dog sitting in the middle of one of the outside eating tables...........We were pleased that we were not eating there!
Review 17:Friendly hosts.
Review 18:No real hotel. Entrance via a pub. Rooms on the first floor, just above a noisy pub with pop beat and snooker noises. Heating doesn't work! Door can't be closed from the inside (will probably be fixed). Toilet smells in the staircase. Couldn't sleep until 00.15 am because of the beat, pub closes around midnight Afterwards woke up at 6 am from the cold: the heating doesn't work.
Review 19:The landlady was very nice. Popped in briefly to see if everything was OK. Changed keys when she heard that the door couldn't be shut from inside. Room is very tidy. All kinds of biscuits.
Review 20:Needed a full length mirror. Needed a bedside table both sides.
Review 21:The chef was a super bloke. The breakfast was very good. The shower was hot and efficient. The room was comfortable no 1 Very good tea & coffee facilities
Review 22:Walking into a pub full of family with children. Children not being looked after and walking in front of the dart board while we were playing darts. Barman absolute useless. Only one towel for a couple in a double room.
Review 23:Bed was comfortable.
Review 24:As a family we were over the pool room so couldn't really sleep until they stopped serving. Only thing really
Review 25:Extremely helpful and polite they couldn't do enough. Comfy bed and a great breakfast.
Review 26:Coud be a bit cheaper. We paid £60 for the en suite. £50 would've been fairer. If you want to have a n early night, it can get a bit noisy.
Review 27:A nice, friendly, unpretentious BnB & backpackers place. Nice staff. The bar is a bit tatty but then I like places like this. If you want to meet a few locals and have a good drink in the evening. I'd recommend this gaff.
Review 28:There was slight noise (voices and music) from the pub downstairs audible in our room from time to time but it didn’t bother us. Corridors and stairways in the communal areas are a bit on the shabby side, but we wanted something reasonably priced in Abergavenny and weren’t expecting the Hilton Hotel. NB: All the plus points, especially how friendly and helpful the people were, vastly outweighed any slight issues.
Review 29:Convenient location – just across the road from the railway station and about ten minutes’ walk away from the bus station and town centre. Our room was quite comfortable and clean. The cooked breakfast (including vegetarian breakfast) was excellent. All the staff were really friendly and helpful. Good real ale (Rhymney Bitter) in the pub downstairs.
Review 30:There is no reserved parking, however it is opposite the station and you can park in the station car park for £3 a day. The showers are a bit weak.
Review 31:The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The breakfast ( served in the bar) was freshly cooked and very good.
Review 32:Hotel is also a Backpacker's hostel which I probably would have avoided if I'd known. Hotel entrance is in through the bar.
Review 33:Room very clean, friendly staff, good location, wifi in the bar.
Review 34:Everything, very grubby hotel. Basic room with very limited facilities. Run down, threadbare carpets, very dirty shower, smelly, no choice at breakfast, just a fry up which was poor, overall this is a place that we used as a last minute booking and I now wish we had looked further. So sorry.
Review 35:A good pint of beer.
Review 36:Everything. Bed was worn out, linen was tired, quilt and pillows had a bad smell. Shower was poor and didn't drain away. Floors cresked at every footstep. Water tank above sounded like Niagra! Don't be fooled by the nice photos.
Review 37:Leaving early in the morning.
Review 38:Sunday breakfast was incinerated, Tuesday nonexistent no staff present. After going out to get breakfast from alternative source was locked out and access back into hotel at 11am was only possible due to exit of other guest because no staff on site and no prior advice given of this situation. Unable to collect a jar of Belgian mustard the Hotel had put in their refridgerator for preservation which was a gift for a family member
Review 39:Location near station
Review 40:Everything - the room was dirty to say the least - the light switch hadn't been cleaned in months and months, the shower was manky, the bedside table had so much dust on it you could have signed your name in it and the whole ambience of the place was just downright dirty, unloved and uncared for. Breakfast was even better (not) cereal was just two opened packets placed on your table, no bowls, milk or spoons to eat it with, the chef was clearly hung over from the night before and I have never stayed in a hotel before where they offer you toast and then bring it out to you already buttered! This place should be avoided at all costs - you'd be better off sleeping in your car in the car park - at least you'd be clean that way! The place should be shut down!
