Reviews for Brecon Castle
Review 1:Nothing.
Review 2:All the staff were excellent from reception, to the waitress who served dinner, to the gentleman that served breakfast. The receptionist gets a special mention as she was very welcoming and went out of her way to assist me when I realised I had forgotten my charger.
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:We liked the fact that this is a 'real' hotel. The staff were all polite and helpful, service excellent, choice at breakfast was excellent - basically, anything you fancied to eat was available to have! There was an excellent atmosphere in the bar at night; the rooms were warm and comfortable. All in all, a highly recommendable hotel.
Review 5:The rooms are nothing like the pictures. Walls were like paper so we could hear every conversation & movement outside in the corridors & other rooms. It felt like a room in university halls. Breakfast left a lot to be desired too.
Review 6:I can't think of anything.
Review 7:On the website I booked a family suite as it said there were 2 left I acknowledged that our children were 7/5/3 booked great then we had a call to say that the family suites had gone but they had a similar room available which meant the 2 eldest sleeping downstairs also a spiral staircase with young children in the night aren't great also the door was very hard to lock no8 we stayed and had a good time but it wasn't what we'd booked and still had to pay the same amount however we did book last minute
Review 8:Very nice staff bar areas are great location is good reception staff were very helpful a good range of ales the food was also very nice again the staff were excellent
Review 9:Booked a Suoerior room but felt the hotel did not offer facilities or the standard of other hotels that charge the same rate. Could have stayed in the Celtic Manor with more facilities for the same price.
Review 10:Position central, staff attentive, friendly, professional, food enjoyable, breakfast fulfilling, comfortable beds, cleanliness good.
Review 11:Characterful hotel in the centre of Brecon. Beautiful setting with smart hotel. Lovely breakfast included. Cozy room with all facilities needed. Nice overnight stay.
Review 12:Parking was tight when I arrived early, but being on the site of an ancient castle, you can't conjure up space that easily.
Review 13:Brilliant staff, especially in the dining room. Great dinner service and fabulous breakfast. Room was very spacious and comfortable. Décor throughout was welcoming and pleasant. Good to have free WiFi too, of course.
Review 14:All was fine but unfortunately the bathroom radiator did not work. This was a minor issue and I informed the hotel when I left so assume they got it sorted straight away.
Review 15:Everything was fine, staff very nice and friendly.
Review 16:Our room was not as warm as we would have liked, probably due to the single glazed windows. WiFi reception in the room was poor.
Review 17:Helpful staff, ensuring we received prompt service for dinner in the evening. This enabled us to get to the theatre in time for the start of the performance we had travelled to Brecon to see. Good food.
Review 18:One of my many stays and again good food, comfortable room and good welcome.I have not found any hotel to compare in this area. Jen at reception compliments this establishment.
Review 19:First impressions, nice hotel, good location. Everything clean and reasonably modern although our room was basic. Even had wifi in our room. Bar lounge and restaurant very nicely set out, we had an evening meal and it was of good quality as was breakfast. Staff were friendly and talkative. The receptionist was polite and courteous however she could do with smiling a bit and be more welcoming. Maybe our biker gear put her off a bit (we're not hells angels or even close)? Overall it was very nice, it was cold and wet outside and it was nice to stay in next to the coal fire for the evening.
Review 20:Not enough room in the seating area so after our meal we had to go back to our room as there was no where to sit to have a drink.
Review 21:The staff were brilliant as was the food.
Review 22:It could do with a lick of paint & new carpet in the the corridor to the rooms but our room was splendid, spacious & comfortable
Review 23:The food in the Restaurant was delicious very well presented and plenty of it. Really pleasant & efficient staff. Fabulous breakfast
Review 24:The room was average, no TV, water had to be drained to get the hot to come through. Initially no WIFI.
Review 25:The staff were extremely helpful, welcoming and very nice.
Review 26:We booked a superior room and were given a family lodge which was old fashioned with table and chairs and old sofa, a blocked up fireplace and terrible peeling paintwork. This room was not in the hotel but across the carpark. Nothing like the pictures on your website for the superior rooms.
Review 27:Room was not as expected thought it was a room with a view , really drafty window needs attention but overall good
Review 28:Location was amazing great staff , lovely food
Review 29:1) Water leakage into room above window dripping onto floor/carpet when raining outside! 2) Reminder that check-out time had passed
Review 30:Convenience to town facilities Staff provided an umbrella from "lost property" for me to use.
Review 31:Room 31 floor is more or less on 15 degree angle which was hard to get use to and bathroom facility's were poor.
Review 32:Size of bed for a person over 6 foot was good, food was excellent.
Review 33:Pleased that full English breakfast was included not just continental. Lovely evening meal with plenty of choice. Grounds very pleasing. Good location for town.
Review 34:Staff were excellent, really helpful, friendly and attentive. The cottage was comfortable and clean. Good quality food served both Breakfast and the evening meal. Great location with ample parking.
Review 35:I can't praise this hotel enough - from warm friendly Welsh staff, to beautiful breakfast (included in price), and wonderful restaurant meals. It manages to be extremely high quality without being stuffy or up itself. It has a warm ambience and is popular with locals. We used the hotel as a base for walking in the Brecon Beacons NP and had a wonderful 2 night stay
Review 36:The food in the restaurant was very good indeed . The four poster bedroom was very comfortable and clean with a lovely bath/shower room. To be recommended !
Review 37:We liked the decor in the rooms, some which had lovely views over the river. The food at dinner was 1st class & the choices for breakfast excellent & cooked to perfection.
Review 38:None
Review 39:Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff- especially at reception. Ease of getting reserved parking for a disabled person and a room on the ground floor- a room clearly and helpfully designed for the disabled.
Review 40:Not really a negative, but due to sloping floors, be careful your water bottle doesn't slide off the sideboard like mine nearly did. LOL!
Review 41:Nice olde world hotel full of character. Young woman on reception when I arrived was really helpful and friendly. Freshly cooked breakfast was best I've tasted in ages.
Review 42:New electric shower not hot enough, not enough volume but too much pressure and tricky to operate. Bathroom shelf inadequate. Bedroom lighting much too dark. Noisy fire door in corridor banging throughout the night. No lift.
Review 43:Good breakfast, efficiently served. We had superior 2nd floor, newly renovated room with views. Charming, welcoming hotel. Good wifi but tricky for Samsung mobiles
Review 44:We found that as regards the food, the sauces were pre made and therefore difficult when needing a gluten free meal.
Review 45:We liked the room as the view was lovely being high up on a hill. The location couldn't have been better.
Review 46:Room was very shabby, staff were not at all helpful-have emailed a complaint direct to hotel but had not even an acknowledgement back! Would definitely not recommend staying here!
Review 47:Food in the restaurant was very good
Review 48:Lighting in our room very poor. Dark little shades, almost impossible to use as reading lamps. (Told receptionist). Hotel restaurant and room chilly on occasion but bedroom radiators worked fine. Parking was very bad. We were sent to a town car-park 5 minutes away at the end of a long journey taken in severe, rainy conditions. Did not realize it was a pay and display so had a £50 fine to pay the next day. naturally the hotel did not feel able to pay it for us!
Review 49:Attentive, friendly staff. Good restaurant. Overall a very nice hotel.
Review 50:I am disabled and there was no lift.also to get to the en-suite I had to climb 2 deep steps which I found very difficult. The decor was very poor especially the Windows.
Review 51:Small issue with a tap in the bath, but other than that pefect
Review 52:The staff were extremely welcoming, the breakfast was brilliant with items made to order as well as an open buffet and the surroundings are beautiful!
Review 53:The bed was two single beds joined together so not comfortable and woke up at 5 both mornings because of dinning tables being moved around in the restaurant under our room.
Review 54:Restaurant serves very good food and the location is good for exploring brecon beacons.
Review 55:booked into the annexe for the first time in many visits. Adjacent room's floor creaked with every step the occupants took and was clearly heard in my room. My previous many stays in the main building were noise free.
Review 56:excellent food and service
Review 57:Paid for an upgraded superior room, nothing other than an additional bed made it feel any different to any other room
Review 58:Breakfast and breakfast staff were excellent
Review 59:A bit of noise from the radiator. Parking is limited but there was a wedding on.
Review 60:Stained glass windows in room. Walk in shower. Real sausages for breakfast.
Review 61:Was not told prior about wedding function taking place. Most Saturdays apparently! Wedding guests were hanging around front door smoking as we were booking in. Why we were given the room over the front door instead of a wedding guest l don't know, but we were up untill 2am listening to them swearing, shouting and singing whilst they were waiting for taxis.
Review 62:Great location, comfortable room, friendly staff and good parking.
Review 63:Our room wasn't ready on arrival, we were switched to 2 single beds without being asked, there was a fire drill in the middle of the night.
Review 64:Nice bar. Hotel made amends at the time, but still not a happy experience.
Review 65:although sold as a superior room there was no chair to sit on, only a stool. The room was small with angled beamed ceiling which meant ducking to pass round the bed Room 43
Review 66:Excellent views, central for walking into town. comfortable.Rooms undergoing redecoration
Review 67:The shower had pathetic pressure and it took 5 minutes for the hot water to arrive! According to Reception this is a problem for top floor rooms.
Review 68:Very friendly and helpful staff all with a willing smile. Good size double room (No. 54), beautifully decorated and furnished and with a great view of the beacons.
Review 69:No lock on bathroom door, windows very tough to open and close. Creaky floor boards so would be woken through the night and morning. Paid for a double room and got 2 single beds pushed together.. Not very good!!
Review 70:Room size. Cleanliness. Breakfast and friendly staff.
Review 71:I think full English breakfast should be included in the price, I don't eat it myself anyway but always resent being expected to pay extra for it in any hotel.
Review 72:The atmosphere and location of the hotel is excellent. The room comfortable and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 73:Room was very small dinghy and basic as we booked a superior room I did not feel that this room was of that standard. Also parking was awful. Ther was very limited seating in bar area an the beautiful terrace could no be used as they had no Canopies for when it rained.. I think this hotel could be improved greatly..it seemed to us that there main concern for the hotel is just the resturant an not the hotel an guests.
Review 74:Food an waitresses were amazing
Review 75:Another faultless stay, perhaps 5th time here, have stayed in a variety of very nice rooms here. Fantastic staff, great breakfast. Stunning views & location, (castle!).
Review 76:The shower was very poor, with leaking shower head and very weak flow.
Review 77:Great location and a very nicely run hotel, I would definately stay there again and recommend it to others.
Review 78:On arriving we were shown where our room was & instead of being in the standard room we has booked we were put in the coach house!! What a lovely surprise & such a beautiful room
Review 79:Food in restaurant was delicious. The bar food was excellent too. Fab location for sitting out on the terrace or garden looking at the views of the mountains and across the town. Good central location but up out of the way.
Review 80:Staff were very friendly and accommodating, providing us with an early continental breakfast, as we had an early start. Beautiful views from the room.
Review 81:The floors are very creaky and the walls rather thin, so there's quite a lot of noise at night (especially when anyone is having sex, like people do from time to time).
Review 82:The food is excellent, and the position is ideal.
Review 83:Booked an evening meal in the nicely appointed dining room but on arrival found it packed and noisy (a group booking perhaps?). Were told in a 'take it or leave it attitude' by a harassed maître d' we could have a table adjacent to the equally noisy bar instead. No apologies, no reduction in bill.
Review 84:Very convenient for exploring the Beacons and the town of Brecon, both of which we enjoyed very much. Hotel staff generally friendly, courteous and helpful. Adequately meet our needs for a 3 night stay on tour of Wales.
Review 85:Nice room, traditional setting, history and heritage. Good WiFi, so could work late into the evening. Staff let me work late in a mtg room away from the bar, which was helpful. Excellent service from the bar staff. A good choice of malt whisky - Irish, Scottish (of course) and arguably the best at the moment, Japanese! Great breakfast with full choice of continental, full-English or salmon kippers etc.
Review 86:We were situated next to a fire exit next to a flight of stairs - even though we requested a quiet room. Not good when the bar is open until gone 3am. We hardly slept a wink. One of the windows wouldn't stay open and nearly decapitated me. Huge patch of damp on one side of wall, ugly and shabby.
Review 87:We liked the views.
Review 88:Room a big let down. Clean, but very old furniture, drapes, carpet etc.
Review 89:The property itself, views, food, staff, location just above the town was perfect.
Review 90:Shame there is no lift-it is a Listed Building. Breakfast could be a bit more adventurous--porridge and fresh fruit for instance.
Review 91:Probably the best hotel in Brecon. Interesting period public rooms.Friendly staff.
Review 92:Would prefer breakfast cooked to order and would expect that at this room price.
Review 93:The bed size and comfort, friendly bar. Lovely room. Quiet. We didn't eat other than breakfast but the food looked great.
Review 94:This is an old hotel that has been modernised appropriately to give a high standard and welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Great staff, good food wines and beers.
Review 95:Very busy due to a party and as my room was at the front overlooking the car park it was rather loud as guests made their departure
Review 96:Nicely appointed traditional hotel Despite the kitchen being really stretched and my arrival at ca 7.30pm without having pre-booked a meal, a meal was delivered to my room and faster than anticipated and it was tasty
Review 97:We stayed in a family news room which was on 2 levels. It was more spacious than I expected and very nicely decorated. It even had a kitchenette which I did not know would be there! The views from the garden are breathtaking, the staff are friendly and the breakfast had a lot of choice and variety. Would definitely recommend.
Review 98:The restaurant was also very good, our compliments to the chef ! Breakfast was brilliant!
Review 99:We were welcomed and all the staff were very helpful and the accommodation was very good, better than we expected!
Review 100:Blood stained pillow case and bed sheet I asked for porridge in advance and they did not have it when I had breakfast there General standard of room pretty average - tired furnishings, ripped cover of seat, bathroom basic
Review 101:Location, setting
Review 102:We used Brecon as "home base" for day trips in Southern Wales. The Castle could not have been a better choice: comfortable room, welcoming pub, and good dining room all in one. This was a memorable experience.
Review 103:Old tired bathroom, shower curtains instead of screen The hotel room is beautiful, old beams, wood panelling, let down by some really cheap and nasty mismatched ikea & mfi furniture
Review 104:Location is great Bar is nice
Review 105:Bed uncomfortable, Had to move dressing mirror to fit kettle on table. Toilet seat would not stay up, and radiator too close to toilet.
Review 106:Good location, quiet room, nice decor.
Review 107:Our room was overlooking the bin areas and was noisy first thing on a tuesday morning when the bins were being emptied and when staff put empty glass bottles into these bins throughout the day. The older lady receptionist was not very friendly and found it hard to smile.
Review 108:The room, interior design and fantasic views from the patio areas. Food was great with friendly staff in the bar and food areas.
Review 109:The hotel was quiet yet very friendly, the food was first class. The bar area was small for the potential numbers but served our needs the little we used it.
Review 110:a lack of bed mattress, on the spring mattress (but that seems common at most hotels in Britain)
Review 111:The location, the breakfast and the clean and cosy room
Review 112:Parking is available at the front of the hotel but it can get very busy and spaces may not be available which can be a bit annoying. Internet not very good but it is free.
Review 113:We had a superior room which had plenty of room and a large very comfortable bed. We slept very well here as the hotel was very peaceful at night. The breakfast is a good selection of hot and cold buffet with prepared to order options available. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is a very short walk into town.
Review 114:We stayed 4 nights and bottled water and shower gel were not replaced. We asked for it and it was one one day but not the others. Really annoying to have to beg for that. Also, for 2 days empty wine glasses stayed on the table and were not taken away while the room was made. This doesn't fit with the rest of the stay which was nice
Review 115:Probably the most charming hotel in Brecon. Well located, nice garden and view. We had a great view from the room too. We had dinner twice at the restaurant as there are only a few in Brecon and they close early. Food was nice although a bit expensive for what it is.
Review 116:Not enough parking spaces. Would be nice if there was a lounge in the bar area. TV table is too low to see TV from bed (room 19).
Review 117:Breakfast is nice. Room comfortable.
Review 118:Breakfast. Continental was a bit sparse. Stewed filter coffee and the kippers were a poor imitation of their east coast cousins.
Review 119:Centrally located, lots of history, nice staff. Try the Zeera Indian restaurant in town. It is exceptionally good food.
Review 120:The first negative point which should be noted by elderly or less mobile is that there is no lift or none that was pointed out to us and we were on the third floor however there are rooms on the ground floor which should be requested if mobility is an issue. Secondly we were very unlucky (apparently), as out room 45 in the whole hotel is the last for restoration. It was dirty and extremely small for a double room, two people couldn't get dressed at the same time so I had to sit in reception whilst my wife got ready. If the internet is crucial then check with reception when booking as it is not available in all rooms. I was also very concerned about the Mark awarded to the hotel for its level of cleanliness in the form of food hygiene, it was awarded a 2 out of 5 in January 2015 which is worrying for a hotel of this standard.
Review 121:The location of the hotel is a very strong selling point. It is within an easy 5 minute walk of the town centre. The staff were very helpful and polite and the standard of the food was excellent. The evening atmosphere in the bar was excellent with a trio of welsh male singers (Trio Canig) providing an ad hoc and excellent evening of welsh singing enjoyed by all.
Review 122:See above
Review 123:The best bit of our stay was the second night, as the first nights sleep was blighted by the smokers praise the bar talking and then a noisy air conditioning unit outside our window. The beef in our room was awful as well. Having said that, once I had brought the unit to the night porters attention, they turned it off which helped, though the mattress in our room was worn out. I explained this the next morning and they offered money off the next night or a change of room. This next room was lovely and spacious with stunning views. The breakfast was excellent both days as was the location and we will be returning, primarily because after the first night we went up pen y fan and got engaged and also because they dealt with our issues in a civilised manner
Review 124:Room was dated and cramped, bathroom was very dated/lots of wear and tear, compared to what was shown on website was expecting a bit more up to date room and bathing facilities.
Review 125:Location was handy, staff were very helpful and accommodating and breakfast was good.
Review 126:I found it hot in the bedroom, but my preference is a cool bedroom at night. Wasn't aware of a thermostat or the ability to reduce the temperature. Opening the window wasn't an option as there were other hotel guests below our room on the patio area.
Review 127:Staff friendliness and willingness to help. Lovely breakfast. Ideal location for Brecon town centre, with an adequate area for car parking.
Review 128:Not so much a bad experience, but improvements to the layout and quality of the room and the bathroom would have improved the overall experience. It was fine, but lacked something that would have made it a bit special.
Review 129:The food was very good and the staff were unfailingly friendly and efficient. The vantage point within the town was excellent.
Review 130:But the bed was 2 singles pushed together with nothing to cover the gap. We enjoy sitting and reading but there is no lounge to sit quietly. Bathroom window not frosted glass so had to pull the blind when using it.
Review 131:We have wanted to stay here for many years and now we can afford it we were disappointed. The room was nice and clean. Bathroom good. Food ok. Staff nice.
