Reviews for The Swan Hotel
Review 1:As it was the weekend before Christmas the hotel bar was very busy and staff not readily available to check in or to query things with. Breakfast was only available between 8-9am which was too restricted.
Review 2:The hotel is very central in Abergavenny so idea for an overnight stay
Review 3:The combination of it being a hotel and a community hub was a two edged sword. e.g. there was nowhere to escape for a quiet drink on the Friday night when the karaoke was on but there was the dining/ breakfast room available for a quiet meal
Review 4:Location and helpful, friendly staff and the home cooked bar meals. We also enjoyed listening to the male voice choir who were rehearsing somewhere upstairs on the Thursday night. Our room was lovely and clean.
Review 5:I work outside and what I would like is to have a decent hot shower. The shower wasn't worth standing under, no power, hot then cold but mainly cold. Holes in bathroom door not very clean. I wouldn't go back
Review 6:Close to local shops and restaurants
Review 7:The only thing wrong with our stay was a man who swore very bad language from early evening till close of bar. He was very drunk, no one else was like this but we would certainly go back to The Swan.
Review 8:Friendly staff, lovely meal.
Review 9:Dated room decor and fittings, would benefit from some modest upgrading. Traffic noise evident from rooms facing front of property
Review 10:Convenient location with car park Reasonable size room
Review 11:There were people drinking and being noisy outside until the early hours of the morning so sleep was not forthcoming (even though we were on the second floor). Plus was not impressed with the quality of breakfast.
Review 12:The staff were very pleasant and the room was very clean.
Review 13:Noisy because room was overlooking Main Street and we had a delivery of barrels of beer directly below us at about 7.30am on our first morning
Review 14:Excellent breakfast and convenience to town centre
Review 15:Damp in the wardrobe which made clothes smell musty. No lamp on bedside - switch for light was near the door, not ideal. Very poor lighting in room. Shower was just a trickle.
Review 16:Location
Review 17:No bath in family room. Crib bit rickety so re-positioned to give stability. Baked beans and sausages for breakfast not the best.
Review 18:Staff very nice and very helpful. They were all happy to wash babies bottles/sort high chair etc.
Review 19:The hotel did not meet our expectation on what we had read on feed back sites. Room 12 had a noisy fridge unit outside the window that kept us awake, cutting in & out. The room was cold, and not clean, to an acceptable standard.(Ie Hair in the bed under the bottom sheet). Unable to regulate shower, too hot or cold. We didn't eat here, for obvious reasons. No staff about in the morning,so unable to highlight issues. would not return here. Had much better value the following night at a travelodge.
Review 20:Free car parking.
Review 21:Wireless was free but not very good
Review 22:One of the best little hotels in which I have been, very central, free parking, breakfast included, unbeatable price. Staff absolutely amazing!! I will stay there anytime.
Review 23:Not enough staff on duty Whole place looked tired Dirty tablecloths at evening meal. That and absence of staff put us off and we went elsewhere to eat
Review 24:Good breakfast Comfortable beds Good location
Review 25:Room was clean apart from large accumulation of dust on top of the TV. and there was damp mould on the walls. All the wall lights were very bright with no bedside lamp. Only one socket for the kettle so limited for charging phones etc. Had to buy an extension lead. Hotel is very noisy with every door slam being heard at all times of the day and night, which spoilt our stay in the hotel.
Review 26:Close to town and all amenities.
Review 27:It was what I was looking for. Inexpensive for a single person. Easy access to excellent walking country. good car parking. local to local shops theatre etc.
Review 28:Hotel really needs updating and freshening up. Double bed against one wall, therefore difficult getting in and out of bed for one person. Breakfast could be improved.
Review 29:Good location
Review 30:Despite booking two nights the hotel only had us booked for one! They admitted this was their fault and after trying other hotels we were offered a place with one of the staff at their home for the second night.Whilst we appreciated this offer it was not convenient and we had to check out after one night. We decided that as the hotel was of poor quality we would drive home. They made a financial adjustment to our account, but we were still disappointed.
Review 31:The one redeeming feature of this hotel is the friendly helpful staff.( we didn't meet the owner who was away)
Review 32:Comfy bed, decent sized en suite, good bar downstairs, 15 minutes from the station, curry, pizza and Chinese take aways opposite - a perfect base for rugby in Cardiff.
Review 33:Looked all a bit run down Loose bed side shelf Big gap between electrical socket, we had the family room child could easily put their fingers down Kettle did not switch off automatically Light pull string broke on first pull Breakfast served on the smallest plates possible and some of it warm but not hot
Review 34:I wasn't there at the weekend but I can see that there might be problems with noise from the bar. The wi-fi was mostly fine (even on the 2nd floor) except for one day when it was unavailable, but I think that is probably down to BT.
Review 35:Staff friendly and helpful; breakfasts nicely cooked to order. The bar is more like a friendly local pub than a typical soulless hotel bar. (OK the bar could probably do with redecorating). Very good value for money.
Review 36:Hotel is desperately in need of a refurb and is very run down.
Review 37:Location is good. The bar is popular and staff were pleasant. Although the food was basic it was good value for money.
Review 38:Noisy bar below room was so loud one could hear the DJ speaking! Toilet seat broken and some lights not working in the bathroom. Our provided baby cot very rickety! Not a stay for families with a baby! No staff on checkout at 9am in the morning..
Review 39:Breakfast was good and breakfast staff friendly..
Review 40:A mistake with the booking was not particularly well handled resulting in us (two couples) being moved to the flat which was not cleaned, very noisy, squeaky floor boards and hotel fridge compressor noisy. Toilet did not flush properly and outlook was an overflowing garbage can. We felt the staff put in some effort to improve maters but the manager/owner did not seem to have any real concerns except to reduce our Tariff. One couple had to sleep in single beds in seperate rooms. Altogether very very disappointing.
Review 41:Convenient car parking
Review 42:Bedsheets were short, but since I stayed just one night and didn't notice at first, maybe it could have been solved. A lift would have been a +.
Review 43:I stayed only one night, since I was going to a wedding nearby. Staff were friendly, the room was clean and comfortable and breakfast was very good. Wifi signal was also very good.
Review 44:Room needs big refurb plug sockets hanging off wall shower needs to be looked at black tape round shower to hold in place, room needs a good refurb.
Review 45:staff very ood
Review 46:Bad WIFI. And worse, they lied about access to a router that gave me a strong signal. They said they didn't know where the router is or who owns it, but they do not have the access code. I found the router in the hall by me room. When I switched off power to this router, the signal dropped out. When I restored power, the signal came back. So the router is in their building, has the same name as the bad router, but with a "_EXT" on tghe end. You don't want me to use it? Fine. But have the integrity to tell me that. Don't lie to me!
Review 47:Great location in the center of town and across the street from a large grocery store.
Review 48:Excessively loud music in the Bar which meant I had to find somewhere else to eat after arriving ( not a problem given location)
Review 49:Sufficient room in car park but it was midweek so may not be guaranteed. Good stable Wi-Fi signal in room. Convenient location for shops and restaurants.
Review 50:Breakfast waitress was fairly miserable. Very noisy on Friday and Staurday night, although it is in the middle of the town so you should expect that with the location, so not too much of a problem
Review 51:2 good real ale on draft and most of the staff were really friendly and helpful
Review 52:Shower was pathetic, the light in the bathroon didn,t work.we only stayed 1 night so we didn,t make a fuss.noisey at night from the locals outside but it was weekend maybe quieter in the week,
Review 53:Close to Town Cntr, good parking, good bar for a beer, close to a couple of good eating places,
Review 54:Wifi was slow. Rooms were disgusting. Staff we're useless. No ironing board. Our room wasn't cleaned. No clean sheets or clean towels. Boiling room, right outside the pubs beer garden. Awful!
Review 55:Absolutley nothing
Review 56:The room smelt, left window open to get rid of damp smell. The decor was tired and the bed linen was clean but well used!!
Review 57:The Location was good, able to park, breakfast freshly cooked, but quite limited
Review 58:Breakfast doesn't start until 8. I had to leave at 7.45. 8 o'clock is far to late to start breakfast during the week as people have to leave for work.
Review 59:Expensive for quality of rooms. Not as clean as I would have liked, stains on the walls of both bedrooms that we had, including one where someone had blown their nose and wiped it down the wall and left it.
Review 60:Location was good
Review 61:WiFi was very unreliable and almost never available in our 2nd floor room. Breakfast was dismal. Quite noisy because of constant traffic and people leaving bar below us.
Review 62:Location and free parking was excellent. Bathroom was a decent size, shower efficient, hot water always available
Review 63:There was live music until past midnight which could be heard in the rooms above the bar, and the locals drinking in the bar were screaming and shouting until 2am. I know there isn't anything the owners can do about this however I won't stay there again because of this.
Review 64:Good location, car park was good, lively and friendly locals in the bar, good breakfast, comfortable bed
Review 65:Staying above the pub was noisy on the Saturday night, just people talking but if you are a light sleeper does disturb your sleep at 2.00am
Review 66:Friendly staff, room clean and comfortable.
Review 67:Our room on the second floor was very warm so the window had to be propped open. We found the traffic noise from the main road below disturbing.
Review 68:The staff were friendly and welcolming.
Review 69:Service at breakfast bit hit and miss, menu was thrown on table at us without a word spoken from waitress as she was busy talking to another couple on table next to us. She was pleasant enough after that. Sausage and bacon not good quality cooked breakfast quite unappetising and only given one glass of orange juice not able to help yourself.
Review 70:We were going to see a play at the theatre hotel great location and for shops and market.
Review 71:Breakfast rather bland and could have been hotter. Didn't have individual tea pots and communal tea pot was rather cold and stewed.
Review 72:Clean, spacious room, nice staff, good bar food.
Review 73:The hotel was clean and tidy and a nice change to find a traditional hotel . The owners and staff were very friendly as were the locals. Food was very nice, nice dining room. Reasonable priced and a good selection of drinks. Will come back again.
Review 74:The place reqires a bit of a face lift. Looking very tired.
Review 75:Good food, nice and clean, staff went out of their way to be helpful. Ok for a weeknd away.
Review 76:We arrived on a Saturday evening for a three night stay in the SwanHotel in Abergavenny. My parents were given room 2 on the first floorand my husband and I were in room 12 on the second floor. When wereturned from dinner at approximately 10:30pm, the music in the pub wasso loud the floor was vibrating, we could distinguish the words of themusic with all the doors and windows closed. My parents could not evenconsider sleeping.I went to the reception desk to ask for another room, but no one was there. I found the reception clerk tending bar in the pub and asked her for help. She brought the owner of the hotel, Jackie, to me to discuss the issue. Jackie advised me the loud music was only one night a week and it would be finished by 11:30pm. I advised her we were trying to rest, but she did not seem receptive. When I asked for another room, she advised me there were none available. I then advised her that unfortunately the loud music was too much and we may be looking for another room in a different hotel that could accommodate our needs- to which she replied "OK, fine" and then she went back in the bar to her drink and friends. The music did not stop until approximately 1:30am- my parents were unable to fall asleep until 2am. The next evening, the pub did not have live music, but it was again loud enough to distinguish the words in their room. I notified the front desk receptionist that we wanted to check out a day early and she advised it should not be a problem and that she would notify Jackie. The next morning, we went to check out and Jackie advised that we had to pay all three nights. I advised her that the music was too loud and we could not sleep and could not stay another night. She then advised me that I had to give her 24 hours notice, to which I replied that I told her on our first night and then spoke to her clerk last night.
Review 77:Very noisy as right on the main street but this is not the hotels fault of course, that comes with a great location! Shame breakfast was only open till 9am.
Review 78:Very helpful and friendly staff and quirky hotel!
Review 79:Room was quite dated and needed a little modernisation Wifi very slow
Review 80:Ideal location for access to the Brecon beacons Good breakfast Very close to town centre
Review 81:Room 7 Bathroom had just shower - no bath. On 2nd floor - no lift so quite a climb with luggage etc. When we were leaving on Sunday morning and my partner was taking luggage to car, he found it dark in the stairway (between ground & first floors) and therefore quite dangerous, but he thought the bulb had 'gone' in the light - which obviously may have been a one-off issue. At breakfast I don't have tea or coffee, but prefer to have just juice. When this is in a jug, I usually help myself to 2 or 3 small glasses, but was just offered one small glass which came out of the kitchen - but I didn't ask for more - so probably my own fault there.
Review 82:Location on edge of town centre and 10 minutes walk from rail station. Plenty of parking. Had bar snack on Friday evening which was nicely cooked. Room and bathroom was quite spacious, clean but basic.
Review 83:One breakfast was good but the tomatoes on toast were wet and soggy.
Review 84:The situation was ideal. The restaurant was clean and bright and good evening meal
Review 85:Atmosphere, music and other clients downstairs in the pub (restaurant) are not really inviting. But you can leave them beside and just got to your room. With some investment and renewal this Hotel could reach from nice to very nice.
Review 86:The landlady was very friendly and helpful. The room was absolutely ok. It was quiet upstairs in the 2nd floor. The breakfast was good. For starting your trip to the National Park it is the perfekt stage.
Review 87:only snag was my window did not open enough for my heat even tho I turned heating off I was at the back top room and was noisy out side so not much sleep .
Review 88:location,has bar and restaurant, staff friendly enough good value .
Review 89:Very dated decor and furnishings Carpark quickly filled up Rooms small No wifi signal on top floor
Review 90:Very friendly staff Good location in town centre Cheaper than nearby hotels Clean and warm
Review 91:Room somewhat cramped. Bathroom very shabby. Wi-Fi instructions didn't work. Expensive for what it was.
Review 92:Easy to find and ideally placed for shops and eateries.
Review 93:We liked everything, but some may have found some of the decor dated ... We thought it was lovely and traditional!
Review 94:Clean, basic no-frills family accommodation with excellent bar facilities and restaurant beneath! No quibble vegetarian options and very welcoming to youngsters!
Review 95:we travelled from Sussex on a Sunday to find the hotel did not serve any food in the evening. Also there was no where in Abergavenny to get a meal on the Sunday evening.
Review 96:A long way up to the top floor but they did offer to take my bag up for me...
Review 97:Well placed for things I wanted to do...... trainable, bussable but I did need to take the car and the Swan has its own carpark which is handy in a busy little town. Took the chance to go to the castle and look round the town museum. Hess was in town for a couple of years during WW2 but he probably had less scope to explore the neighbourhood than I did.
Review 98:The staff was so friendly and went out of there way to make us welcome, great customer service skills, lovely room, lovely food & great prices & it was a lovely stay & ill definetly being staying there again soon!
Review 99:The bed was very soft around the edge - probably an issue with the base as the mattress itself seemed OK. The shower cubicle was very small.
Review 100:We came for a funeral so the central location with on-site parking made it easy to get to. The staff were very friendly and attentive and made our two-night stay as pleasant as it could be under the circumstances.
Review 101:We were given ours keys to the room but when we entered the room it was clear it had not been prepared since the Las person had left. However the matter was very quickly resolved. The staff were very friendly, breakfast was great and the entertainment on the Saturday night (Lewis) was excellent. Very friendly patrons too.
Review 102:Arrived at 630 staff behind bar gave me two keys and said if you're in late tonight be quiet !not the welcome I expected no help with bags just told where room was No staff on duty at 10.45 pm when I returned from evening meal out ,place was locked up and deserted no sign of life at breakfast, tables laid but again no sign of staff reception closed unable to pay bill Luckily was staying in abergavenny that day but had to go back to sort out had to ask for receipt and was given handwritten one ,very unprofessional set up and whole place needs updating was quite unsettling in evening to let myself in to a deserted place would not go back
Review 103:The price and location
Review 104:The room was quite old...had bad smell....
Review 105:The staff was very nice. Breakfast was good!!! Location grate...just ecross the bus station. The hotel's pub down stairs is the high light in the town.
Review 106:Really needs a thorough redecoration and refit. Couldn't connect to internet. Electrical sockets few and not well placed. Plug-in 'air freshener' over powering and not needed.
Review 107:Location, excellent breakfast-despite temperamental toaster. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 108:Bedroom and ensuite could do with a little updating.
Review 109:Perfect location, extremely helpful staff, lovely breakfasts! Very comfy and excellent value for money
Review 110:I was in room ten which unfortunately did not have a toilet, which meant I had to use toilet facilities in corridor. Not impressed.
Review 111:Staff were pleasant, breakfast very good.
Review 112:The rooms are over the pub, so to ensure a quiet night, it was essential to take a room on the top floor. The cost of peace and quiet was a climb up two levels of stairs.
Review 113:The staff were first class. The food was extremely well prepared and very tasty. The chef may not be classically trained, but he certainly knows how to prepare and present a really good meal. The personal service was well appreciated. The room was a bit basic, but clean and comfortable.
Review 114:The bar was very crowded & noisy on both evenings although this did not affect us in our second floor room, it might put some people off. Staff offered to let us sit in the restaurant area if we wanted to talk.
Review 115:Staff very friendly & helpful. The place was clean & comfortable & good value for the price.
Review 116:While the hotel is in need of refurbishment it made up for this in the helpful and friendly staff, nothing was too much effort. It was typically pub grub but it was freshly cooked.
Review 117:The Hotel could do with a cosmetic enhancement.furnishings and decoration look tired and dated.
Review 118:Friendly, helpful staff.complimentary wifi, overall value for money for a 2 night stay at the Swan .prompt service and good breakfast.
Review 119:Room too small. Very tiny shower cubicle. Toilet located outside of the room. Could not open the window. It had scaffolding all around it. It is on the corner of a busy road.
Review 120:The breakfast was lovely
Review 121:Decor seemed a bit dated
Review 122:Excellent attentive staff who went the extra mile to oblige. Hotel is conveniently located in town and we got a good night's sleep during a mid-week stay. Potentially could be noisy if it was a busy weekend night
Review 123:service in restaurant started badly but improved to very good after a few words
Review 124:Local beer excellent & cheap Dinner very good a brilliant steak well presented Room comfortable Breakfast good Parking fine
Review 125:I had to miss breakfast as i had to go early that morning!
Review 126:Excellent location as i was visiting family and friends for the day and not too far from each other, got a good deal on the room, the room was just right and spacious.
Review 127:Only one key to the room and the night porter was not around even though we were told otherwise.cooked breakfast was small of poor quality.chipped crockery.
Review 128:The breakfast was OK but the vegetarian sausages were only available one day out of six.
Review 129:The room was a good size and the bed comfortable, unlike the rock hard beds you get in the hotel chains.
Review 130:Room smelled damp and bed really uncomfortable. Also noisy due to been weekend and busy with people enjoying late night revealling
Review 131:location parking and friendly staff
Review 132:Room 10 - although there is a basin/shower in this room, there is NO toilet! Basin looked well used (if you get my drift)
Review 133:Friendly staff and decent breakfast
Review 134:Noise (?music?) on Saturday night, but it did stop promptly at 11.30 and there had been no noise on Friday evening. Slightly tatty air to some of the fittings.
Review 135:The price, the breakfast, the bedroom, and it was conveniently situated. Definitely acceptable at £120 for two people for two nights.
Review 136:Bar was closed although there were people in there, I was offered a pint as a resident but it felt like someone wanted an early night
Review 137:staff accommodating me ok as I arrived late (1015pm)
Review 138:Other guests(?) banging on our door at 12.20 am and rowdy loud behaviour continuing until 5am. We had no sleep. There was no one to telephone to complain to although in the morning I was told there was a night porter. Poor room and bathroom. We were told there would be no charge but on returning home I see that one night's charge has been taken. More like a hostel than a hotel . Would not recommend this to anyone.
Review 139:Not much, however they did offer us a room on a lower floor when we asked but this did nothing to help what happened later that evening
