Reviews for The Frenchgate Restaurant & Hotel

Review 1:Nothing - just a pity I only had one night in Richmond!!

Review 2:Beautiful room, enormous bath and lovely wet-room shower. Huge custom-made bed was very comfortable. Room was warm, spotlessly clean and full of character - a welcome change from the chain hotels I normally stay in. I heard the hotel has a good reputation locally for great food but sadly, the timing of my stay did not permit me to experience this! On saying that, breakfast was excellent!! Staff very welcoming - I would not hesitate to stay there again and thoroughly recommend it.

Review 3:Wifi in room was patchy but I was in a standalone cottage that was very quiet and comfortable...so not really a problem.

Review 4:Restaurant was excellent, fresh cooked breakfasts were sensational. Staff were fantastic. Nicely located for the market area.

Review 5:Not a dislike but a comment. Evening mean probably around double what you would pay in a pub or Inn but this is a Hotel and the food is tasty and nicely presented if a little on the small portion size for my liking.

Review 6:Nice old building with character, free parking either on the road in front of the hotel or in the hotel car park. Clean room, comfortable bed, nice hot powerful shower. Tasty evening meal and nice breakfast.

Review 7:The staff where friendly, efficient, polite and very helpful. The room was very spacious, spotless and comfortable. The food and service at the restaurant was fantastic and very high quality.

Review 8:Nothing

Review 9:The hotel was lovely and the food excellent.the owner had really thought about his own experinences staying in hotels and transferred all the benefits to the frenchgate

Review 10:Single rooms smallish but adequate

Review 11:Lovely hotel. Calm and beautifully converted. Nice garden (which unfortunately not over useful in Winter but would be lovely in summer). Excellent breakfast. Dinner, whilst not cheap, is also excellent.

Review 12:The staff were very helpful, room was of a very good standard. The menu choice and food from the restaurant was excellent, would recommend a stay here.

Review 13:We had a lovely room at the top of the hotel. The meal we had in the restaurant was top class and the accompanying wine beautifully complemented each course. The breakfast was also good. Thank you for a great stay.

Review 14:The lack of real ale in the bar, but the reason for not stocking real ale was understandable.

Review 15:Excellent food, very clean and well run hotel, Comfortable rooms with all necessary equipment provided.

Review 16:Large bed was nice, but took up most of the room. Pillows rock hard and blue lighting made it impossible to see to apply makeup.

Review 17:Nicely cooked and presented breakfast.

Review 18:Food was excellent but we would have liked to have been offered a lighter option than a full and fairly expensive dinner when we arrived after a very challenging journey through torrential rain and thunderstorms. It didn't spoil our visit though

Review 19:Lovely hotel in a great location. Staff were very helpful

Review 20:I'm convinced we got the wrong room. I booked bridal suite which from the pictures had a baths in the same room has the bed. The room we had had a sewerage bathroom with narrow bath

Review 21:The location of the hotel and food was lovely

Review 22:This is a simply delightful hotel - wonderful location, a beautifully appointed room, and the restaurant was faultless. Extremely interesting wine list (not cheap, but some very unusual things). Not a single thing to grumble about - we had a superb stay.

Review 23:Great staff wonderful food and so so clean Staff tried to meet all needs and were friendly. Theme in hotel was theirs and they carried it through. Details like wall art in rooms was just lovely and not some awful copy painting. Refreshed bathrooms good linens plenty of pillows and lashings of tea, coffee plus excellent. Quality toiletries in bathroom. Well done them

Review 24:I have no doubt there are nice rooms available however we had Room 1 which was outside of the hotel through the rain and was no more than a room with a bed put in it. There is no ventilation. There are no opening windows in the bedroom which cannot be healthy and no opening windows in the bathroom except a broken old noisy extractor which was repaired after pointing out to the owner but still no fresh air could be invited into the toilet/bathroom or bedroom. Doesn't make for a memorable stay. Owner stated well it is a ground floor room. Beds are ok but are all singles pushed together. No wi-fi throughout rooms even £450 a night room I asked other guests. No shower but a bath with a pint tankard to wash hair with. It could be so much nicer for a few pounds spent carefully on little things.

Review 25:Food is nice and beds are ok

Review 26:Bar, inadequate pre arrival instructions re parking at rear, inflexibility when cancellation without full charge requested due to our error - "terms and conditions were quite clear"

Review 27:Location, room, bathroom, breakfast and friendly professional staff.

Review 28:We loved all of our stay at the Frenchgate. On arrival we were met bythe owner David - who immediately upgraded us to a superior room - andwhat an amazing room it was!! A bespoke 4 poster bed and a featurefireplace carved by the British furniture designer Robert (mouseman)Thompson. The room was decadent, extremely comfortable and scrupulouslyclean. The bed was to die for - we had the best nights sleep on the 15inch matress!! The bathroom offered a contrast - very modern and whizzybang!! All bright white with top quality fixtures and fittings. The restof the hotel is full of character and very tastefully decorated. Davidwas a very amenable chap - who couldn't do enough for us. We had agood laugh with him - he's very down to earth! Breakfast wasdelicious with a wide variety of choice. Richmond itself is a lovelysmall town - & well worth the visit. We will be returniing to theFrenchgate - with friends in tow, hopefully around Christmas time!!Thank you David & your staff for a wonderful stay. Ellie & AndyGillott (Barnsley)

Review 29:Very limited on street parking and hotel's small carpark is hard to find without advance directions.

Review 30:Central location. Excellent food. Very comfortable.

Review 31:The room was pitiful with zero natural light. There was no wifi even though this is advertised as included in the room rate. The owner/manager is unpleasant and has 'fought on-line internet bookings and Booking.com for eight years'.

Review 32:Decent breakfast. Some staff members were friendly and helpful.

Review 33:Having to leave!!! Seriously though nothing.

Review 34:We have stayed here before so knew what to expect but the 2 other couples hadn't. We were there celebrating the recent marriage of our friends - they got an upgrade to the honeymoon suite which was amazing (we all had a look around). We are in the restaurant and fine dining it was - everyone's meal was top notch.

Review 35:Hotel just short walk to town centre. From time we arrived until the time we left the staff could not have been more attentive. We were booked into the cottage which was lovely. No shower but fully enjoyed the roll top bath so shower not missed. Clean, comfortable and quirky. Breakfast was yum and served with a smile. Nothing bad to say, perfect break!

Review 36:Nothing cannot fault

Review 37:Amazing comfortable bed Bathroom modern stylish and underfloor heating Owner welcoming and informative Breakfast delicious cooked to perfection and served quickly and with a smile Great base for exploring the area Cannot fault in any way Will try the restuarant next time

Review 38:WiFi was a little bit flaky, but still worked adequately and I can appreciate the challenge of WiFi provision in a period property like this one.

Review 39:Lovely room in character Georgian townhouse, very well appointed and bonus of private parking to the rear. Superb breakfast and a good selection of Port for a nightcap :-). Dinners looked lovely, too.

Review 40:Can't really say we had any problems or dislikes !

Review 41:the bedroom was very cool with a big stone bath a centre piece and the place was spotless. Bed was massive , slightly uncomfortable but overall the Townhouse was just what you'd expect full of Art work and character. Staff were also very friendly and welcoming.

Review 42:Amuse Bousee menu or nothing.. Lovely as food was I would have liked to see a choice if not that hungry for many courses. May put some people staying off eating here. Wine and drink bit pricey.

Review 43:Excellent food.

Review 44:N/A

Review 45:The staff, service, standard of the rooms and hotel environment were exceptional. The food was incredible. It would be a crime to stay here and not book a table in the Restaurant. The dining experience was the highlight of our stay.

Review 46:Warm personal welcome, great breakfast with lots of options. Rooms well decorated and thought about. Actually had a mirror near a socket so I could blow dry my hair, very few hotels actually have that. Although expensive you can see what you get for your money which always make paying easier. I would recommend to others very happily.

Review 47:Very friendly, helpful staff. Lovely bedroom with amazingly wide and comfortable bed. Good breakfast and fantastic evening meal - really special food.

Review 48:A wonderful, warm welcome. A comfortable, if small, room and a hearty breakfast. Delicious dinner menu. A lovely place from which to discover Richmond and the surrounding area.

Review 49:No central heating in our en suite bathroom or bedroom in the morning. Frosty outside, exceedingly cold inside. The wall mounted electric heater in the bedroom was of little help as it took a long time to raise the temperature of the room to something acceptable. However, the main hotel building was lovely and warm

Review 50:Pleasant location with free parking

Review 51:Rooms a bit small for the cost of the hotel I think. My room was described as one of the larger rooms but I would struggle to see how it could be much smaller. There really wasn't much room except to walk around the bed.

Review 52:The people and the décor were very nice indeed. The food was very good with an excellent set menu in the evenings. Lovely big bed. Good location.

Review 53:Loved the whole experience. The location, the decor, the wonderful food, the staff, the comfortable room, the funky radiators, lighting, Eco systems, the peace and quiet of the place even though the town centre is just 100 metres away. This is what all hotels should aspire to.

Review 54:The double bwd (which itself was comfortable) had single duvets. The owner told us this was the best way to sleep and it's what Scandinavians prefer. However we're English and found them uncomfortable and annoying!

Review 55:The location was excellent-very close to the town in a very quiet road.

Review 56:The only thing I would like to see change is a brighter light near a mirror as I found doing my make up a little difficult. But if that's all I have to worry about then it's almost not worth mentioning.

Review 57:The staff are an excellent credit to the hotel. The location is good, the accommodation was spotlessly clean and the breakfast also met high standards. I will definitely be returning.

Review 58:There is essentially nothing negative to report.

Review 59:The room facilities and restaurant service and quality were outstanding. Decor and character of the Hotel matched the history of the town and surrounding areas. I have now stayed in Single, Double and Superior rooms during several visits and confirm all rooms are of a very high quality of appointments and comfort. All staff were very friendly, attentive and professional in every respect.

Review 60:Very welcoming and friendly staff Fabulous room with feature in room bath. The bed was massive and very comfortable. The restraunt menue was mouth watering.

Review 61:From the moment we walked into the hotel we knew we were somewhere special. David's wonderful greeting made us feel so welcome and when we walked into the Bridal Suite we were blown away. Words wouldn't do the room justice, suffice to say that it's so unique you need to be there to appreciate it. We ate at the hotel too, the staff couldn't do enough for us and the food was marvellous, as was the breakfast. We'll certainly be coming back to stay in that room again, many thanks to you for such a wonderful experience. Steve & Andrea

Review 62:A minor one really. The hotel is not easy to find on a dark Novembernight. The dark green sign outside is poorly lit and the name, elegantlywritten in gold, I think, only readable from close by.But just a minor grizzle form a born again GOM

Review 63:Almost everything. The hotel is very elegant situated in an historicpart of the town. The welcome is exceptionally warm and inviting. Theroom I had was a 'spacious' - yes spacious - single.Breakfast is excellent - cooked to order, no rubbery fried eggs and greasy bacon at the Frenchgate. The set dinner menu at £ 39.00 cannot be described as cheap. However, it is good value for money. You can't get a Bentley for the price of a small Fiat. My advice to guests, particularly older ones such as myself is to 'treat yourselves' - after all you are only spending money that your offspring would waste after you have cast off your mortal coil.

Review 64:Dinner disappointing for£39. Charged £9.95 for glass of wine. Sorbets in edible -no apology. Absence of drawers in bedroom - lived out of cases. No heating in bathroom. Difficult to find car park.

Review 65:Pleasant staff, comfortable bed.

Review 66:My visit began with being told my 'personal customer service assistant' [or some similar term] would show me to my room and talk me through the features. This was followed by a demonstration of a light switch on the side of the bed [ok useful], a gabbled long list of features in the ensuite being explained including a shower with 'aerated water', a bathroom basin without a plug claimed to be ecologically friendly - as if wasting water can ever be - underfloor hearing and to finish obviously most impressive of all a heated mirror. Felt like being talked AT by an estate agent which wasnt what I needed on arrival. After settling in, I later asked about the laundry service which my 'customer service assistant' at reception had no idea how to do having only been there 3 months and apparently not having been trained - there having been no demand for it. It turned out after asking a colleague that the service was sameday only which of course only works if you stay more than one night - no doubt explaining the lack of demand. And ended with the comment 'its because we dont do this onsite, but we do provide a 4* laundry service'. Many B&Bs offer overnight laundry service, yet a hotel claiming to be 4* and with nearly double the prices to match doesnt. Alas there is neither a laundrette nor dry cleaner in Richmond open after 5pm on a saturday and the one that closes at 5pm doesnt reopen tlll monday morning [I arrived too late to get my laundry done]. There only seemed to be about 2 staff about and there are I think 9 rooms so it's not their fault at all. The owners might do better not to advertise the service or better to find space for a washer dryer - much more useful than blue led lighting, even if not as 'flash'.I did try the '80% aerated water' shower - it is very odd as you take a shower and do get clean but dont really feel like you've been properly soaked like you do in a normal good shower or a bath.

Review 67:v good location as the bed was comfortable and tired after a walk I quickly had an early evening snooze and when interrupted by loud dance music through a wall from some fellow guests. After some puzzlement about where the music was coming from it was dealt with efficiently and effectively. The breakfast was good [but] Staff were friendly and helpful [to extent facilities allowed them to be] The place has obvious potential to be a really nice, comfortable and a good place to stay, if only the staff were better trained and facilities improved a bit

Review 68:The position of the Hotel was great for us, just off the Town Centre and the staff where excellent and showed a genuine interest in our needs,we have already booked for a return visit next year.

Review 69:The Extra King Size bed was out of proportion to room area. Would have preferred normal double bed and maybe an easy chair. Disinclined to take advantage of restaurant for dinner since menu and therefore cost were inflexible.

Review 70:Good quality breakfast with well varied menu served at our table. Courteous and helpful reception.

Review 71:Bar prices were a bit expensive, especially for a Yorkshire Lad!

Review 72:We stayed in the Bridal Suite otherwise known as the "Mousey Thompson" room and the huge four poster bed was fantastic! Very comfortable and huge. The shower room and spa bath were wonderfully relaxing after walking around Richmond and the castle and we had a really good evening meal in the restaurant. The breakfasts were very good too. We'd love to go back there sometime for another special occasion as we celebrated our Ruby wedding anniversary there.

Review 73:Room with lots of character but only one bedside table and no shower. The dining room is ordinary and £39 for 3-course dinner was a lot. Breakfast OK but could have been more and service was casual.

Review 74:Excellent quiet location with easy parking in front of hotel. Pleasant atmosphere.

Review 75:Absolutely no complaints. Would definitely stay there again if we return to Richmond.

Review 76:Very friendly staff. Alice on reception and David the owner were extremely nice and helpful. The building is lovely and very nicely decorated. The room/bed/shower room were great with underfloor heating in the shower room which was fantastic on a cold morning. Lovely quiet location on a pretty street.

Review 77:The restaurant was a little expensive, and it would have been better if you could choose which courses you wanted, rather than having to opt for all five courses!

Review 78:The staff were very attentive and friendly. The location was good and the food was of a very high quality.

Review 79:nothing

Review 80:the friendly informative welcome, the great service and the beautiful room.A wonderful nights sleep in peace and quiet with an excellant shower in the morning. The breakfast was delicious and perfectly served.Hope to return.

Review 81:I can't honestly think of anything at all, only the fact our stay wasn't longer as the hotel garden area was something we didn't have the time to enjoy

Review 82:As soon as we entered the Reception area it was apparent this hotel was well looked after, really tastefully decorated and the welcome we received second to none. The young girl behind Reception was very friendly and most helpful with good knowledge of the area recommendations of restaurants and places to visit nearby. We ate at a fabulous French restaurant Rustique in the town centre & breakfast the following morning at The Frenchgate was absolutely delicious. The owner is very friendly and polite indeed & made us feel very welcome.

Review 83:Everything, stayed in the bridal suite which was fantastic, breakfast was lovely, location, friendly staff, just wish we could have eaten in the restaurant during our stay - will definitely return

Review 84:The bed in Room 4, the Paris room was not that comfortable though a good size for a single room. It was very hot and the ceiling fan was on and much appreciated when I arrived. I couldn't manage to switch it off on the first night or back on again on on the second day. It wasn't very intuitive. I wasn't sure if it had broken down or I had simply pressed the wrong switch.

Review 85:Almost everything, the location, parking close by for free, a short walk into the Market Place, the friendly and helpful staff, the lovely fresh breakfast and more. I will definitely be back.

Review 86:Only a fixed 5 course menu available for dinner! We would have stayed if a price for fewer courses had been a ailable

Review 87:Super clean, well appointed rooms and friendly staff. Great breakfast

Review 88:The wi-fi was not particularly strong and often dropped out.

Review 89:The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful, with nothing too difficult to help us with. The hotel itself was beautifully set up, very clean and comfortable, with all the amenities you would want on a short or long trip. The gardens were beautiful and it was nice to be able to sit outside in the evening with a local beer. The restaurant food was of a very high standard, and the atmosphere friendly and informal. I could not recommend this place enough and will definitely make a return trip.

Review 90:Finding the place.

Review 91:Room was excellent. Staff were very attentive.

Review 92:Not applicable

Review 93:Bridal suite was amazing - food was great - staff were brilliant

Review 94:Room was spectacular, food delicious and staff incredibly pleasant and professional

Review 95:Amazing food, quirky decor and friendly staff. Very enjoyable, relaxing visit. Very comfy beds!

Review 96:The restaurant would be a bit pricey for a solo visit but nice for a couple on a romantic trip!

Review 97:Very beautiful setting.

Review 98:Very hospitable and the food was fantastic. Rooms are amazing.

Review 99:Owner was helpful

Review 100:The bed was really comfy, the food was great and it was a very pleasant stay

Review 101:The restoration just seemed to miss the mark in several areas. Just not a friendly place.

Review 102:Everything

Review 103:The hotel is a beautiful house tastefully developed. The owner and staff are most welcoming and efficient.Food is excellent.

Review 104:Room rather small room with own entrance adjacent to main hotel- nice bath but no shower

Review 105:Good position to visit Richmond. Comfortable room

Review 106:Nothing really.

Review 107:A good all round confortable place to enjoy.

Review 108:Excellent service!

Review 109:Service and friendly staff - attention to detail and central location

Review 110:Excellent service, can't do enough to make your stay perfect

Review 111:Inadequate lighting in room. Canned music in common areas. No bath, only shower.

Review 112:Comfortable beds. Easy parking. Reasonable breakfast.

Review 113:All superb. Totally remommendable

Review 114:We were lucky enough to stay in a beautiful suite and had dinner in the hotel which was simply superb.

Review 115:Everything felt homely, comfortable, food excellent, staff friendly.lovely town hotel very near to the Dales for walking.

Review 116:Breakfast menu looked great but items not available and not at all prepped and ready

Review 117:Spotlessly clean, friendly staff. Lovely market town

Review 118:Nothing we didn't like.

Review 119:Lin one word everything; the room, especially the large, comfortable bed!

Review 120:Excellent accommodation and service.
