Reviews for Hallgarth Manor Country Hotel & Restaurant

Review 1:There was a bit of damp on the walls but on the whole, a lovely hotel.

Review 2:Lovely meal in the bar and friendly bar staff. The first room we were given had no bath so we requested to move. This was not a problem and we were assigned a room with a bath straight away.

Review 3:Our mattress was very bumpy and needs changing SOON! Also hotel is dated but we couldn't complain at all for the money we paid for it, it was fine.

Review 4:What a lovely property, its quite a WoW building really.

Review 5:Room was on 2nd floor. Carrying bags etc up the flights of stairs might not suit the less mobile. Room on entry was cold, no heating on. Had to go and request it be put on. (forward thinking?)Took ages to get warm. Lay in bed under bed clothes with clothes on to get warm. Provision of a portable heater would have been helpful. It is an old quaint building, but when you walked on the floor the whole room shook and the wardrobe rattled..quaint! Walls thin, could hear `goings on`.

Review 6:We came for New Years Eve stay and party. Staff were friendly. Disco, food, and function room were just right. Breakfast was very good, attentive staff. Location of hotel in a nice countryside situ.

Review 7:Spartan single room not even a chair in the room, no headboard on bed so pillows kept slipping down the wall, outside lights lit up room

Review 8:Friendly staff and excellent breakfast, good wifi

Review 9:Our bed was horrifically hard, neither of us had a good nights sleep, it was also a very windy night and our window was rattling and shaking the whole night. The tiles on the roof were shaking too and it was very noisy. The room was clean but the bathroom very dated. Overall it was ok we were both just shocked at how uncomfortable the bed was.

Review 10:Lovely house, beautiful in the reception area.

Review 11:The room we had was big enough for an elf with slopes all over the room so ya cudnt even get out of bed on 1 side without banging your head

Review 12:It was lovely nd clean

Review 13:Attic room was rather cold. Wifi was very poor over the period \I was there and only appeared to work once rebooted several times and only in main reception rooms

Review 14:Staff were friendly and helpful - excellent breakfast. Great location near Durham

Review 15:the sign for the hotel was small and as we arrived in the dark we went past it.

Review 16:the breakfast was good and so was the food in the restaurant. they have real ale at the bar which we enjoyed. staff were really friendly and helpful.

Review 17:The hotel was a little cold away from our room, the driveway could do with an upgrade, and no lighting to the main car park made walking to the hotel tricky. with a bit of investment on a refurb, this hotel would be better than most in the Durham area.

Review 18:Staff were very helpful, the food was delicious and the room was comfortable. We were also pleased to have an en suite bath! The building and the grounds are lovely and the atmosphere very relaxing

Review 19:Very small room. An 'arranged ' power cut meant we had to be at breakfast by 8.15am. On returning to the room we were in darkness unless we 'exposed' ourselves to the car park! Couldn't watch television, make a cup of tea... Cleaning staff were extremely noisy, even knocked to come in and start cleaning. This was not a relaxing visit at all. The hotel can't assume everyone is on business trips and therefore up and out. We wanted to enjoy our stay making a relaxed and leisurely departure. Not the case, left very disgruntled!

Review 20:Staff were friendly and very helpful, particularly on Reception.

Review 21:Staff without exception were friendly & helpful. Food was excellent value & our waitress was cheerful & helped us with our choices. We felt very welcome at all times!

Review 22:would have liked a bath rather than just a shower, but not a big deal

Review 23:nice location, service and staff attitude excellent, clean comfortable room, good food

Review 24:Floors very creaky and little soundproofing.

Review 25:The staff were extremely helpful during the booking process and on our visit, very friendly. Breakfast was lovely.

Review 26:Room poor tv remote not working, bed looked as if it had been slept in not straightened out at all and pillows not neatly in position. Could not get on wifi. Generally in much need of updating and fresh décor, looks very tired all round.

Review 27:Breakfast was good

Review 28:There were no negatives for me - yes the property IS a little frayed around the edges but to me this adds to its charm.

Review 29:Charming period property set in lovely grounds/gardens. Room clean, large, comfortable & warm. Staff here are a real asset to this hotel. Great food. Free Wifi throughout the hotel. Relaxing atmosphere. Close to park & ride for city centre.

Review 30:Below are reasons why I didn't rate the manor very high but they don't take away from the positives and comfort of the place. We had to wait for a while at reception till someone attended to us; Quite poor lighting in room (though it did not bother me a whole lot);

Review 31:Charming rooms with lots of character; Good restaurant with lots of options to choose from; Excellent breakfast; Great views from the room; Location and garden looked great (though it was raining so I couldn't go out to explore)

Review 32:Decor in need of updating a great deal. Taps weren't working fur bath. Shower head kept falling off wall. Tiles in bathroom weren't safe butts of tiles were broken. Draft coming from Windows.

Review 33:Hotel inside resembled the film The Shining, kept expecting the Twins to pop up and the words RedRum to be chanted. Desperate need of upgrading but fair for the price paid.

Review 34:Food was good and the hotel is in a location that was convenient for me. Hotel receptionist was very helpful when I asked to re-locate into another room (wind noise was really bad).

Review 35:Breakfast staff impatient and cleared away too early. 9.30 too early a finish time at weekends. Room had paint peeling off walls. Shower had no power. Toiletries and towels appalling.. No atmosphere

Review 36:Lady who checked us out was very friendly

Review 37:The bed was so uncomfortable the springs we're sticking into my back which has resulted in backache for several days now. A good thick topper would have helped or another mattress . The shower was warm .i have long hair so found the water too cold to rinse my hair . We tried to find a switch or pull cord as mentioned in your guest information but no luck in this room. Sorry but a bad nights sleep and a cool shower resulted in a disappointing visit.

Review 38:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was beautifully served and was cooked perfectly .

Review 39:Kettle lead did not reach plug so had to put it on the floor - or get sideboard moved nearer so slightly dangerous for mature people or children - Room 5 and in Room 2 also had to unplug kettle to pour out. Otherwise everything was very good. Could have done with brighter overhead light in Room 5.

Review 40:Friendly and helpful staff when we needed directions in the fog. Very comfortable duvets. Excellent breakfast. Ambience.

Review 41:Bathroom in major need of a renovation. Pillows were very flat and gave little comfort - need replacing. Bed was very squeaky.

Review 42:Friendly, welcoming staff who catered for our needs and sorted out any problems we had

Review 43:Shabby interior, stained dirty carpets, cheap out of character doors on 2nd floor, shabby bathrooms and toilets, stained walls, rotten windows, appalling decor. I could not sleep in the room, it was so horrible. We checked out.

Review 44:The staff were very courteous and understanding when we said the place was appalling and we could not stay. HOW DID IT GET 3 STARS? The chef is clearly excellent - food was good.

Review 45:Lighting or a sign would be helpful near the turning to the hotel, I missed the turning, especially at night.

Review 46:The staff were very friendly and helpful, the cooked breakfast was excellent.

Review 47:We have no complaints

Review 48:The friendly and very helpful staff both at reception and in the restaurant, the garden view from the window of the comfy room and the lovely hot breakfast served by a friendly and efficient waiter will ensure we will visit again if given the chance.

Review 49:Could do with a refurbishment

Review 50:The food in the hotel was fantastic and was as good as an upmarket restaurant. Breakfast was brilliant. Reasonable prices in bar and restaurant. Nice staff

Review 51:the seating in the lounge was not very comfortable, and there are no armchairs or anywhere to sit in the bedrooms.

Review 52:not far from Durham ,Food at breakfast and in the restaurant was very good .friendly staff good value for money.

Review 53:Wifi not always work failed initially then again later for prolonged period / TV not work (to be fair staff came to look quickly couldnt resolve but offered single room instead rather than double or a free drink) / Lighting in room was poor needs updating (just couple small lamps which are insufficient)

Review 54:Loads of parking / All staff v helpful / V good breakfast / decent price / great room size

Review 55:State of disrepair throughtout the hotel in soft furnishings and structure. Being able to hear guests in the next room walking, talking and using the bathroom.

Review 56:Staff friendly and helpfully

Review 57:No exterior lights on, we arrived after dark and it was difficult to find it. Receptionist disappeared soon after we arrived. Drinks in bar were over priced.

Review 58:Quiet location

Review 59:Bedroom furniture is in need of renewing very shabby, although the bed was very comfortable and clean.

Review 60:All food both breakfast and dinner very good value

Review 61:Wifi didn't work, availability of staff for service, bathroom painfully small, heated towel rail adjacent to the toilet bowl so burnt right leg, rotten and dirty windows, the bread, croissants etc were not covered in the breakfast area and flies were landing on the food.

Review 62:The Full English Breakfast was very nice and served by a very helpful young lady.

Review 63:A minor point, but I like fresh air and one sash window was stuck and the other had no weights so it closed immediately. Had to fidn something to jam it open.

Review 64:Clean and comfortable, very friendly staff.

Review 65:This was my second stay and I was put upstairs which has not been renovated. Very old room and bodge jobs on damages to the room and its furnishings.

Review 66:Pleasant staff, lovely setting, beautiful view for breakfast.

Review 67:the rooms were damp with condensation the mattress was really uncomfortable springs sticking in our backs worst sleep ever .

Review 68:was a nice country retreat could be an amazing place gardens are beautiful needs a huge refurb

Review 69:The place could do with a general tidy up.

Review 70:Nice old country manor house with extensive reowrks and extensions. Room was fine if a little out dated. Perfectly comfortable for my over night stay Large function room for weddings etc. Food was excellent.

Review 71:the bed itself dirty and stained around base with no covering, wet towel in bathroom upon arival, dirty marks on walls and stained room carpet have stayed in past in different room will not return

Review 72:Staff and food nice clean bedding

Review 73:The room (12) was in a very poor condition. A broken window pane ,a broken toilet seat, a cracked basin, a useless shower. a Tv with only one useable channel, laminate peeling from vanity top, broken wall tiles, paint peeling from the walls in the bathroom. I was unable to use the Wi Fi, I think I was perhaps too far from the router.

Review 74:The Location. The space for parking the car. A good supply of hot water.

Review 75:The bathrooms are a little run down but perfectly useable.

Review 76:Great customer service from the staff and excellent food. Great character and architecture in the building. Excellent value for money.

Review 77:Some facilities weren't quite up to snuff e.g. one couldn't get an outside line from the room, the TV remote was iffy, there was no toilet roll holder.

Review 78:Location, friendly staff, good food.

Review 79:If I was to be picky then I would say it is a little tired décor wise but you get what you pay for . I didn't pay 5* rates so it is acceptable for what you pay

Review 80:Staff are really friendly and the food is always tasty and hot. Breakfast is always good with lots of choice

Review 81:The room was in the attic, could not walk around the bed without bumping my head. The bathroom was tiny, had paint peeling off the ceiling. There was no hairdryer. Up many steep flights of stairs. WiFi did not work in our room. Sadly past its best.

Review 82:The bed was hard, the wifi didn't work in the rooms. I did complain but the receptionist didn't know where the booster was to try and fix it. For business users this is essential and one of the reasons I chose this hotel.

Review 83:The breakfast was very good, however it took some time from ordering. I requested a 7 am breakfast when booking but was told 7.15 on arrival. I needed to be with a client at 8 am and when breakfast didn't arrive until 7.33 I had to rush it!

Review 84:The bedroom & en-suite were in need of refurbishment. We used the restaurant only once but had to wait 45 minutes for main meal then 35 minutes for desert !! There was only 4 other customers in the restaurant so it wasn't busy !!!!

Review 85:the location is great for visiting places around Durham.

Review 86:Not clear that the restaurant was going to be closed on the evening. Food offered in bar but many items were not available. Would have been disappointed if we had paid the full rate.

Review 87:Nice location, good value for money offer

Review 88:The welcome and the food, both were excellent. There were a couple of issues with the room we were initially allocated. The staff responded immediately and to our complete satisfaction. Mistakes happen and it is measure of a business how it responds to problems. Hallgarth Manor passed the test with ease.

Review 89:Never got room we booked, advertised as 40sq. MTS.on booking.com we asked for abigger room moved to13 sqmet. That was the largest in the hotel dont adv.you donthave

Review 90:Breakfast, was very good also cleaning staff,Dawn was very helpful with our room move.

Review 91:The beds were very uncomfortable and squeaky. If you were in the front we were woken at 5/6am with the bin men, shortly followed by the beer delivery .

Review 92:The staff were friendly and helpful, evening meals and breakfast excellent.

Review 93:Sometimes smell of nearby livestock a tax intense. My mattress very soft, but hopefully it was a particular exception.

Review 94:Generously proportioned Manor House with large rooms, high ceilings, wide corridors (warning: no lift to upper floors!). Charming enclosed garden in back viewed from dining room. Authentic 'Village Tavern' adjacent with local regulars.

Review 95:WiFi poor or non existent, TV volume too quiet and couldn't be altered also could only access channels BBC1 and 2. One bed was on a sloping floor so too uncomfortable to sleep in. Maybe it was just the room we were allocated, others could be OK.

Review 96:Good location, excellent food, friendly staff.

Review 97:The bed was a little uncomfortable but not enough to ruin our stay

Review 98:Food at the hotel was excellent. Location was great for anow escape to the middle of nowhere

Review 99:Leak in restaurant coming out of a light, bathroom very small no shower mat could slip at any time, got a drink in bar a vodka n lemonade and they was no vodka in it

Review 100:Food was nice

Review 101:Litter all over grounds.Front gardens and entrance NOT impressive. Needs massive amount of redecorating inside and out.Bedroom windows were filthy.

Review 102:Has been a nice place but now is very tatty and unkempt.Needs lots of TLC.

Review 103:Premises a bit tired. Damage to bathroom door needed attention and window frames re-painting.

Review 104:Breakfast was better than most hotels, with mostly fresh produce, freshly cooked.

Review 105:Slow service for Sunday evening meal. A few minor defects in bedroom, No TV remote control, 2 corridor lights not working.

Review 106:Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 107:The hotel itself could do with a little jazzing up, even just the miniatures in the bathroom were 'cheap' The potential to be such a fantastic hotel

Review 108:Fantastic location for a last minute stay, we went to beamish and the hotel staff were really keen to advise us of the museum itself. Breakfast was superb! Grounds were beautifully maintained Clean throughout

Review 109:Bed not particularly comfortable prefer a king size bed. That is just a personal comment.

Review 110:We arrived late but managed to get a meal which was very good. The breakfast was excellent

Review 111:Very creaky beds and floor. Rubbish in the garden from wedding the day before. Generally run down furniture and fittings

Review 112:Good breakfast and pleasant staff`

Review 113:the bedroom was shabby.furniture was extremelyshabby, one bedsidecabinet could not be opened, the other had no handle.dressing table had brokenleg. The duvet cover was stained and looked grubby. window was broken and dirty and the bathroom didnot have window or expelair village tavern bar more like a taproom although staff were very pleasant Rubbish under table in garden from wedding on saturday was still there Monday

Review 114:The staff were very pleasant and friendlyBreakfast very well cooked and presented clean white tablecloths

Review 115:No plug for the washbasin, mentioned this twice but nothing was done about it. Shabby en suite, loose trim around the shower tray with jagged edges. This was only secured after the second request. No biscuits provided for the second day of the stay.

Review 116:The staff were friendly. The setting was pleasant.

Review 117:The Hotel seems quite dated and would benefit from a make over although the room we were in looked as if it had been decorated but badly, the carpet was stained and the furniture was old and the cupboard had damp in it.

Review 118:Ample parking. Pleasant staff. Seemed quite clean.

Review 119:Creaking floor boards everywhere, kept us awake. Window unable to be kept open, and hot during our stay. Fire info illegible Poor hospitality tray

Review 120:Can't think of anything

Review 121:Wifi was hard work that is my only grumble

Review 122:Good location comfortable room, very good food both evening meal and breakfast i will stay here again when heading north

Review 123:No lift, so had to carry luggage up two flights of stairs.

Review 124:Beautiful old manor house with lots of character. Pleasant and peaceful surroundings. Would have liked to have stayed longer.

Review 125:The hotel needed a great deal of improvement to paintwork and standard of cleanliness in the bed room and ensuite. Room 19.The windows throughout the hotel needed cleaning. The public rooms were better, but it is a building which could be absolutely fantastic if a great deal of money were able to be spent in it. However we did enjoy our stay as we are not as fussy as some might be, and can understand how difficult and expensive refurbishing might be. The breakfasts were excellent as was the evening meal.

Review 126:Location. Character of hotel. Food.

Review 127:Just plain tired! Rooms desperately in need of a face-lift. The hotel name does not suggest 'budget', but this is what it is.

Review 128:Nice quite & remote location. The staff are very helpful and friendly.

Review 129:Lightweight curtains (didnt block sunlight out in early summer morning) No restaurant after 9pm.

Review 130:Accommodating and friendly staff. Stayed here twice in one week. NIce garden at back. Just right for the purpose of my stay.

Review 131:Parts of hotel are looking a bit tired but money has been spent on the parts that matter. So excellent value for what we paid.

Review 132:Comfortable bed with fresh white linen and soft towels, refurbished bathroom, excellent breakfast and helpful, hard working young waitress in the evening bar. Excellent value for money

Review 133:The hotel has seen better days. A bit of love and attention is desperately needed. The public toilets were awful.I'd like to come here again when or if it gets some attention.

Review 134:The staff were very attentive. It was a nice hotel with adequate parking. The room we had was large and with an-suite bathroom. The price for our stay was reasonable.

Review 135:My only bad experience was because of an error by Booking .com

Review 136:The staff were very friendly and welcoming even when they had two bookings fom me due to an error by booking .com

Review 137:THE ROOMS NEEDED DECORATING AND THE BED WAS SMALL.

Review 138:THE STAFF WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND THE FOOD WAS V GOOD THE BEDROOM WAS LARGE AND SO WAS THE V NICE BATHROOM

Review 139:Room was a bit musty window frame needed replacing & wardrobe was built in but all plaster was falling off inside.

Review 140:Hotel in General was good. All Staff were great & very helpful. Food was excellent

Review 141:Great value hotel, very comfy beds, lovely breakfast, happy staff, the hotel itself is a little tired in places, but overall a very pleasant stay and will use again and probably again :)

Review 142:Out of 4 rooms viewed, none could be endured for 1 night, let alone 2. Requests when booking ignored. Mattress springs visible. Bed bases half covered with wood.

Review 143:Very polite and apologetic staff

Review 144:Bed was very uncomfortable. Bedroom and shower room were tiny. Sink was cracked in a few places. Hit my head on the eves when getting out of bed. Duvet too warm for summer time.
