Reviews for Lion Quays Hotel & Spa
Review 1:overall very good but there were splatters of something on the bathroom walls . which wasn`t to nice and the hotels water went off ,so we couldn`t shower in the morning, we didn`t get told personally about this and didn`t notice the sign until leaving .
Review 2:bed was very comfortable and spa facilities were good.
Review 3:This is a great place to carry out some work, relax in the gym / sauna / pool.... The staff are excellent, friendly, the breakfast is also good. I have stayed several times and always use all the facilities, business & pleasure.... In fact if I am within 50miles of the Lion Quays it is the first place I look at to book... Anything I need from the team that works there is never any trouble...
Review 4:A dismal room overlooking machinery. Lunch in restaurant on the Sunday was dreadful, less than pub food and not cheap. Plates piled high with Christmas veg smothered in gravy. Who serve's food like this these days. We were entertaining guests, very embarrassing.
Review 5:Location and the Peacock!!
Review 6:The lack of use for facilities for the price I paid; the price of food when waiting over a hour for it to be served and still not satisfied as I had to ask for my sides; no information for us to be checked out of rooms for 12am advised to stay til 4pm the next day and to check out then; no information previously about treatment cancellation fees and asked for more money for the cancellation than the treatments price in the first place!
Review 7:The country club
Review 8:Tired bathroom, mildewed silicon sealant, poor finishes/standard of maintenance. Basic bed linen. But still good value for money.
Review 9:Friendly staff. Comfortable bed. Great location for shopping, walking, spa etc. Generous tea and coffee facilities. Good breakfast.
Review 10:We are not so keen on the make over that has happen in the 'Waterside', painting over the wooden beams with white and grey has altered the ambience of the place and also the 'a la carte' menu was the same as our last visit in July and we thought it was expensive then too. One of the waitresses attitude left a lot to be desired as she didn't come across as friendly or helpful and we noticed a couple of other tables also commented on this too. The majority of the staff are great though.
Review 11:The rooms have had some work done to them since our last stay and they are back up to looking great again. We love the location and the fact that there are 2 restaurants/ bar and the spa close to hand. The hotel staff (reception and chambermaids) were very friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the freebie stuff is lovely!
Review 12:Could do with sound proofing between rooms as TV and entire conversations were audible next door . The Waterside restaurant is over priced for what it delivers. A better fixed price menu would be a good idea
Review 13:Very pretty location next to the water. Canal view room was really nice but the twin looked over the car park so was quite ordinary. Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. The leisure facilities were very good - clean and not crowded when we visited. You can use them up til 4pm after check out which is great if you are only there for the one night.
Review 14:Room/bathroom was rather small. Were put in a room with interconnecting door - could hear everything, not very private! Air-conditioning very noisy (told it shouldn't have been on as they were faulty!). Restaurant very pricey - chicken supreme (which was overcooked kiev) £17!
Review 15:Lovely setting by the canal. Nice friendly staff. Great breakfast
Review 16:Prefer the buffet breakfast rather than the menu, there were a few problems with water for the shower but it was well handled.
Review 17:Love this place generally as it is just in the right place and always delivers a good stay.
Review 18:We upgraded the room as we went for my birthday weekend, I was disappointed with what we had for the money. I was also disappointed with my spa treatment. The therapist didn't speak to me or ask what I wanted from the treatment.
Review 19:The spa & leisure facilities were excellent as was the food in the restaurant
Review 20:The air conditioning / heater was not working. They placed a business traveller in a room close to the function room with a late private party, hence the noise disturbed my sleep. Just lack of forethought from the staff.
Review 21:Plenty of parking
Review 22:Our room looked out onto the bins. A bit small as well. Bathroom a bit basic for 5*. Busy road very close. Also the restaurant over-priced for what you get. Go to the Queens Head instead!
Review 23:The spa is amazing. Breakfast nice. Lovely canal side location. Beautiful area.
Review 24:Food expensive and was charged twice for our meal. But they rectified this when I got home. Room was bit cold.
Review 25:So peaceful and relaxing very helpful staff. Housekeeping was fantastic so spotless. Also spa was beautiful.
Review 26:Really pleased with room and view. Less happy with the spa. I had paid £50 for my husband and I to use this and was really looking forward to using the snow cave but that was closed with no prior explanation and so was the steam room. That didn't leave much that we couldn't have just accessed for free via the adjacent country club.
Review 27:Bed a little too soft, but this may suit others.
Review 28:The spa facilities were very nice, the country club facilities opened lovely and early so we were able to use them before breakfast on the second day. A great price for the spa facility as hotel guests. Spa staff were very helpful and welcoming, I liked that we had a full tour of the facilities. Lovely room overlooking the canal. A lovely way to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The boys played golf just up the road while the girls went in the spa. Great breakfast, the bar area was really relaxing, staff very friendly in there too.
Review 29:Handy location near the Agnes Robert Jones hospital. Great efficient staff when booking in - we arrived early and was pleased to be told our room was all ready for us. Lovely room over looking the canal although on the small side. Room clean, bed very comfy like sleeping on a cloud. Staff friendly and pleasant. Spa facilities are great, although lockers could do with replacing ! Had an embarrassing situation when my locker would mot open luckily another guest came to my rescue and alerted staff who then sorted the locker quickly. Food we had for the evening meal was lovely, served efficiently and pleasantly. Breakfast in the morning was good - buffet style - one waitress was rather rude slamming down a plate of toast on the table and sauntering off - must not be a morning person ! Would definitely stay again if needed to attend the military clinic in the future
Review 30:It's obviously out of town so a drive to anywhere out of the hotel but that's not what you go to a spa girls for.
Review 31:Everything was a beautiful place. Everything you need for a spa break
Review 32:We liked everything. The staff . The room . The bed was 10 /10 . The evening meal and morning breakfast was excellent. Are view from balcony was perfect.
Review 33:A lack of communication between staff meant we were unable to eat in one of the restaurants as we had planned.
Review 34:The canal side location and the lovely swimming pool.
Review 35:Breakfast slightly let our stay down. Very cheap sausages and no croissants. We did ask for some but the waiter was so busy, he never came back to us.
Review 36:Fantastic hotel and lovely spa.
Review 37:Only fault I got bit disappointed steam room wasn't working in thermal suite, although u could go through an use the 1 in the swimming pool.so didn't give full score on facilities but other than that great
Review 38:Thermal suite, nice room looking over canal breakfast was lovely an staff made us very welcome.
Review 39:The restaurant was excellent but the prices were just on the high side. Was grateful our stay was on a sunday so we could partake of their sunday meal deal.
Review 40:All the staff were so cheerful and the spa pool was amazing.
Review 41:No apology or explanation for the false fire alarm around 3 am on the first day. Table had to be laid on the second morning,Breakfast on the second day was buffet style and the food looked as if it had been in the dishes for awhile, evening menu in restaurant expensive for what was offered and served.
Review 42:Facilities are very good although it would have been good to have a more comfortable lounge/ bar area. Staff were very friendly. Room was good.
Review 43:was kept awake all night from noisy residents in room next door, had to complain twice! noise went on long after 2am!!!! this was meant to be a restbite night away, worst night sleep ever, has put me off as i had no apologies which is very disappointing.
Review 44:Lovely hotel, food and facilities. friendly house keeping staff
Review 45:Waited 40 minutes for our drinks to arrive, had to ask where they were, asked for the desert menu but didn't arrive, other than that restaurant was nice
Review 46:Lovely views of the canal, very welcoming in the hotel and restaurant.
Review 47:N/A
Review 48:Due to my 9 year old some being I'll we had to cancel our meal in the restaurant and have room service! The staff and the service we're great and very helpful with our needs! The room service was excellent and the staff was brilliant at helping out with anything we needed for my son. This really helped what could if been a difficult situation into a nice evening in our room even though our boy wasn't well!
Review 49:The whole experience was completely spoiled upon checking out (10.00h on the 30th September 2015). We had paid cash for meals, drinks and the spa throughout our whole stay but the lady on the reception demanded repeat payment for our evening meals. We supplied the unsigned bills to show that we had not put the meals on our room but she was loathed to believe us. So we showed the other bills where it stated we paid cash and she begrudgingly "allowed us" to just pay for our room - which we paid for in cash. When asked for a receipt she said that the computer was "down" so we could not have one. We said we were not going to leave without one, so after a couple of more "computer says no" moments she scrawled a number and some initials on a piece of headed note paper and threw it at us. She promised to email us a proper receipt but never did.
Review 50:The setting is very scenic with the canal and landscaped gardens - nice and quiet despite being near the main road. The breakfast was very good. The spar part of the hotel was a great experience- worth the extra charge.
Review 51:Nothing really. Need to have car to get from A to B. That wasn't a problem for my husband & I.
Review 52:Will be back on holiday. Just a beautiful hotel.Great breakfast. Receptionist checking us in ,great people skills ,lovely girl. Her computer system down . But nothing was a bother.Checked us out next morning , same friendly manner.
Review 53:When attending the spa you had to walk back outside to get to the hotel. Booked a double room, and got two twin beds joined together. Worse nights sleep and very uncomfortable.
Review 54:staff in hotel could have been more friendly not enough staff on at breakfast food good
Review 55:spa staff and facilities excellent. thermal pool and snow cave excellent
Review 56:We ordered some food for lunch, (by reception). Left to go for a walk for quite some time and the plates, left over food etc was still there. It remained there all the time we sat there. Shame really because couldn't fault anything else
Review 57:Excellent facilities, lovely staff and lovely food.
Review 58:The food. Limited menu definitely not fine dining. Breakfast cold as the hit trays were not lit. Food swimming in grease. Chef needs to retrain we have had better prepared food on duve boats in the Far East. In fact the Restaueant lets the hotel down. It is also a pity that the Spa is located right across a very large car park from the hotel building. Definitely off putting on rainy days.
Review 59:I appreciated the wet /disabled bathroom and the room being on re ground floor. Grounds very pretty with pathway along the canal with long boats going past.
Review 60:No issues.
Review 61:My first visit was to this hotel for business. Loved the leisure facilities. very good service reception check in and oout, leisure facility and breakfast. Cannot comment on evening restaurant as I got carried away time wise in the gym and pool.
Review 62:Bed somewhat on the soft side. Treacherous crossing of A5 at hotel entrance.
Review 63:Quiet and tranquil setting on the Shropshire Union Canal. Comfortable room with updated decor. Large (~50 in) TV. Electric heat. Good breakfast. Large parking lot. Very good value for price (89GBP). Upscale clientele.
Review 64:The room decor was tatty, no aircon, restaurant service was really poor. Dinner, we had half the bill refunded. Breakfast we ordered tea and toast and it took 20 minutes and two further requests before it arrived. At which point we had finished eating. Complaint at checkout just ignored. Would not go back.
Review 65:Nice view from the canal side.
Review 66:Our bed was too soft for us.
Review 67:Our room, View, Canal and Pool were lovely. The breakfast was great, I really liked the presentation. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you
Review 68:Room was quite dated with wallpaper peeling off and air con that wouldn't turn off. Also little things like there being three of us in the room but only two cups and no toilet roll so two calls to reception. Reception staff were lovely bar staff were quite rude and we felt looked down on because we wanted to eat in the bar rather than the overpriced restaurant. Also no tables to eat in the bar so practically had to eat on our knees. Aimed solely at the higher priced menu and that is obviously why you get treated differently.
Review 69:Use of the leisure centre and the outside of the hotel beautiful surroundings.
Review 70:Room we were allocated 319 stunk of stale cigarettes/even cigars? Was disgusting..returned to reception and re allocated to room 325. Double bed uncomfortable sunk in middle. Bar by reception closed no lamps or candles boring atmosphere. Sat in there but told to go to other bar by reception. Spa is beautiful...
Review 71:Room we were allocated 319 stunk of stale cigarettes/even cigars? Was disgusting..returned to reception and re allocated to room 325.
Review 72:We found the main entrance at night very dark from the main road. Coming from Oswestry we missed the turning and had to go up to the roundabout and almost did the same on the second night. Just a minor comment!
Review 73:We didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel as we were visiting family who live near. We have stayed before and enjoyed it very much, especially the grounds and walks along the canal
Review 74:Great room, lovely surroundings, yummy breakfast, modern & tasteful decor, nice facilities, everything we needed for our short stay. Looking to stay again without the kids next time so we can take full advantage of the spa!!!
Review 75:The only two downfalls were we had to have a cold shower in the morning, we made-do because it was too early for me to want to complain but when we mentioned it on check-out the receptionist did apologise and say had we gone and told them it would've been sorted very quickly for us. The second was in the spa, there were a few tiles/stones missing from the jacuzzi area which they could re-tidy up but nothing major at all!
Review 76:Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Food was lovely, with hardly any wait. Location and grounds were stunning. The room was great, spacious and comfy. Spa was amazing, ice cave is a must. Would definitely recommend the place though - especially for a wedding. If it wasn't so far away, I'd hold mine there.
Review 77:A very comfortable room in a hotel with superb facilities in an amazing location. The pool is tremendous and we loved the situation by the canal. This would be a superb location for a celebration, including a wedding!
Review 78:No soap for three days (none in stock!). Extremely cramped room when extra bed added.
Review 79:Leisure facilities - great pool and gym. Very quick and friendly room service.
Review 80:The'Z' type bed which was supplied for our 3 year old grandchild collapsed and could have caused a serious accident. Restaurant. Food good but the service was slow. My husband ordered a post dinner coffee which never arrived even after repeated request.
Review 81:Room was about 25 degress in the night
Review 82:Great if you want to relax, use the pool facilities. Food is nice and your near a few good tourist places within 30 mins drive
Review 83:The wait to get a drink at the bar was overlong. The bar and restaurant was not busy at the time. I had to clear one of three tables in the bar area to be able to sit. In the hour we were there no attempt was made to clear the tables.A hen party was on in the hotel which turned in to a foul mouthed, loud late night event. No comfortable chair in room
Review 84:good bed and a good breakfast. Friendly staff. We had a problem with our TV but it was rectified immediately
Review 85:Noisiest hotel i've ever stayed in, room was next to stair case and you could hear every movement and noise. Wedding parties on a Saturday night are so loud, we were kept awake on a spa weekend till 230 and woken at 720 by Cleaning staff, i'm absolutely shattered from our relaxing weekend. Horrific experience in our room 317.
Review 86:Spa and leisure facilities
Review 87:Bathroom was a bit small.
Review 88:Lovely bedroom- comfortable and decoration was lovely. Swimming pool was excellent - great size. Bar lunch and evening meal were very good. Lovely setting - on canal.
Review 89:First night in restaurant we were left sitting for over an hour waiting on our starter, the waitress hadn't put in our order, very disappointing, we didn't go back the next night.
Review 90:The location was great for getting around and close to visitor attractions.
Review 91:The only complaint is the restaurant. The cooking was very good but the choice limited and everything had chips no alternative choice.
Review 92:The atmosphere was very relaxed, the swimming pool was very nice.
Review 93:The spa. It seemed a little bit of a shame. Staff weren't welcoming nor did they seem to know what was going on or explain where I should go. The beauty therapist gave a great body scrub but was very heavy handed when doing my facial.
Review 94:The food and restaurant staff were fantastic
Review 95:No air con, very expensive for what you get, small room, poor quaity fixtures and fittings. Hotel off a very busy road, nowhere to go without driving apart from 1 greasy pub. Would definitely not go back.
Review 96:Nice food but expensive, good service, good gym, nice swimming pool.
Review 97:someone bashed the camper van in the carpark and the hotel weren't very helpful when we requested CCTV footage of it to see if we could catch who did it.
Review 98:Beautiful location
Review 99:Breakfast - slow staff, cheap sausages used (chip-shop type) and had been standing for hours. Room smaller than anticipated Expensive for what it was
Review 100:Spa facilities Evening meal at the restaurant Location and buildings
Review 101:Wasn't really a bad experience but my starter of pate at the waterside restaurant just didn't taste right and the staff were really good about it,no fuss made just took it off the bill and gave us a complimentary drink.
Review 102:How relaxing it was and the staff very welcoming and helpful
Review 103:staff couldn't find my booking and it took four attempts to get what I actually ordered for room service. Got the impression staff couldn't really be bothered.
Review 104:The gym was great
Review 105:I had a terrible night sleep. A feather duvet.. In summer? Far too hot but as there was no top sheet then it was a duvet (too hot), or nothing (too cold). I found the room quite scruffy and dated, which was the opposite of the public areas downstairs which were very nice. The rooms need investment!
Review 106:Breakfast was very good and the hotel grounds were very nice.
Review 107:14 year old son unable to use gym, sauna, jacuzzi or steam room. This was not made clear when booking online, only found restrictions later when reading the small print in the rules and regs for the country
Review 108:Excellent breakfast
Review 109:We recently stayed for a wedding. As we were only staying for somewhere to sleep we were excited to have breakfast so it didn't seem we'd wasted money to go to sleep. We waited for 15 minutes for somebody to bring us tea and that was because I hunted for someone to come and see to us. The breakfast was poor with not much variety.
Review 110:The room was lovely. Wedding staff were amazing. Wedding was beautiful.
Review 111:The room wasn't clean - I had a 'blonde hair ball' attachedto my foot from the carpet The staff were the most miserable I'veever encountered! Bar was completely unorganised with dirty glasses andrubbish everywhere After 3 attempts dinner was served without prawns andan extra caterpillar in the salad!! Quality of breakfast was very poor
Review 112:Lunch was very good (compliments to this chef)
Review 113:We were disappointed that the bar/bar food wasn't available as the restaurant was expensive.
Review 114:The hotel was immaculately clean and I really enjoyed the veggie sausage!
Review 115:Poor wifi connection. Breakfast not that good. Very disappointed that swimming pool was too deep for our non swimmer child.
Review 116:Location, comfort and cleanliness
Review 117:We ate in the hotel the first night. I ordered steak and chips and the chips were served in a cup not much bigger than an egg cup. Very disappointing when you consider the price
Review 118:Leisure facilities were absolutely superb.
Review 119:If we had one complaint, it was that the shower room was a little on the small side, but really it was a great room and a very nice hotel in a lovely situation.
Review 120:We had a lovely room - though on the small side - on the corner of the hotel, overlooking the canal and countryside, so it was very picturesque, and we had a little balcony too. The staff were helpful and friendly, and despite being over-run with a huge wedding party, nothing was too much trouble.
Review 121:No bad experiances, WiFi could have a better signal through out the hotel.... needs boosting
Review 122:The spa was so relaxing , all the staff were knowledgeable and polite, all ways professional but down to earth at the same time... ,
Review 123:Terrible long wait for drinks & buffet lunch when family joined us for lunch-over 3/4 hr wait for food after ordering.Area not busy,so why so long.No radio in room and reception no help when asked why TV had no radio facility.
Review 124:location
Review 125:Disappointed with comfort of room. No comfortable chairs. Valance on bed was faded and stained. Poor quality pillows. Mattress too soft. Staff seemed to be struggling when breakfast was busy. No-one was smiling
Review 126:Enjoyed the canal view
Review 127:Very close to the very busy A5 road so some traffic noise day and night. A little inconsistent in cleaning the room and in setting up tables in the restaurant.
Review 128:Location on the canal and view from the balcony - make sure you get a room with a balcony
Review 129:Breakfast. Sweet little milk bottles but just topped up didnt look very clean. Used jars of jam/honey and no butter on table. Trying to get on A5 very busy road.
Review 130:Nice huge bathroom good shower, storage space. Nice fresh bed linen. Spa area and pool are really good but pity jacuzzi not working.
Review 131:Staff need training to be more efficient and give 4star service. Whole experience not 4star. Ordered a burger for dinner when served me no burger in the bun!
Review 132:Our next door neighbours decided that talking loudly until 4:00am was acceptable and despite reporting noise and complaining twice to Reception sleep was not possible until after 5:00am - VERY VERY disappointing
Review 133:It was what was required for visit to concert in Llangollen
Review 134:went to spa building by mistake as this fronts the site - signage to hotel could be clearer - this was daylight. At night could be harder to distinguish ?
Review 135:location - pretty landscaping. ground floor room. Very friendly staff and comfortable clean room. Appreciate there being a main ceiling light as opposed to just bedside as in a lot of hotels.
Review 136:Bar area lacked character, but service was good.
Review 137:Clean and comfortable room, overlooking the courtyard (would have been nice to have a canel view...) Pool and spa facilities were excellent - country club.
Review 138:Unfortunatley we were given a room adjacent to 3 other rooms that were undergoing renovation work, the 4 rooms were behind a set of fire doors as we opened them the corridor was filled with shoes, clothes and tools belonging to the builders as this was the only place they could put them whilst working in the rooms and outside beyond the external fire doors,as it was 3pm we thought that they were probably just finishing off the job!. Unfortunatley this was not the case and at 07.45 the next morning we heard them arriving getting there work gear on in the corridor outside our room then beginning work hammering, sawing, drilling, etc I don't blame the builders as obviously work entails noise but our room should not have been in service due to the nature of the work being carried out,I made this complaint at the desk and was told by the lady that this should not have happened as she had asked them to be quiet I finnd that incredible as how can you carry out refurbishment work quietely.
Review 139:Great Spa facilities,good breakfast
Review 140:Nothing
Review 141:Staff very attentive, especially the lady in reception. Nothing too much trouble for the rest of the team, food great in the restaurant for both evening meal and breakfast. Walk along the canal lovely, weather helped. Cheeky peacock stalking was hilarious
