Reviews for The Angel Hotel
Review 1:Comfortable and attractive hotel with a relaxed country feel. Quiet comfortable room, though it would have benefited from some bathroom hooks, shower cap and full length mirror.
Review 2:Back door locked 15mins early so I was locked out and had to phone the porter. It took 10 minutes for my first breakfast order to be taken. For the second morning my ordered toast never turned up. Great breakfast otherwise.
Review 3:Really comfortable bed!
Review 4:On both mornings my cooked breakfast was just about warm. My poached eggs were overcooked.
Review 5:Staff very friendly and helpful Comfortable hotel Very clean
Review 6:Few minor issues with room - need to double glaze windows - occasionally noisy from main street
Review 7:Overall good hotel in many regards from very experienced travellers - sited ideally for town area and market hall only 100yds away - staff very pleasant
Review 8:My airconditioning unit wasn't working so the room was too hot, the bed was very soft & the room overall was dark & gloomy. I ordered sea bream with artichokes from the restaurant menu which could have been wonderful but the fish was "swimming" in about an inch of olive oil. I did raise this with the waitress but was only offered a complimentary coffee to compensate.
Review 9:The overall appearance of the hotel is great, I'd previously had an amazing afternoon tea so had high expectations of the quality of the room & restaurant food. On arrival we were told we'd been upgraded (I was travelling with my manager so this went down well) however, apart from an impressive bathroom in my room, both of us were disappointed with the size & style of respective rooms & couldn't really see what the "upgrade" from standard to executive was.
Review 10:The attitude of the staff on duty late night. Obviously wanted to finish serving and get home.
Review 11:Very comfortable, clean and a lovely location right in the centre of Abergavenny.
Review 12:The basic room with a dated bathroom seemed poor value, as for £20 a night more for an exec room it has eg a 'fired earth and villeroy and boch' bathroom. We were told they were to be modernised. We had a dog and were recommended the basic. The charge of £25 a night for the dog seemed steep.
Review 13:Lovely hotel and staff. Good food and a great bar. Excellent position in town and for walking out of onto the Meadows and river Usk.
Review 14:Lack of sufficient space for disabled drivers in car park.
Review 15:Food and convenience of situation. Made to feel welcome and met in car park to assist with luggage. Comfortable room.
Review 16:Not the biggest room but still comfy.
Review 17:Loved it. Super stylish, relaxed. They have a free electric car for guests to borrow, we used it to drive to a walk in the hills above Abergavenny. And the town is full of good pubs and restaurants.
Review 18:I thought your hotel was wonderful and have recommended it to a friend who is looking for a weekend break. I loved the attention to detail, spotless room and bathroom and beautiful food. The staff were friendly and courteous - perfect.
Review 19:I got a room here for my parents for two nights when they came to watch Ireland v France in Cardiff. They are seasoned travellers and they really liked the room and the Hotel.
Review 20:The price is ridiculously expensive especially if it doesn't include breakfast. I paid 160 per night and no breakfast included.
Review 21:Very nice and cosy place. Has the potential to be one of the greatest in the country. Very friendly staff and good food in the bar.
Review 22:if you look inside your teapot at breakfast you will find the teabags still with their little pieces of cardboard on the end of the cotton - the same type as you find on the courtesy tray in your room.....adds to the flavour.........
Review 23:free upgrade - top notch room - quality furnishings - log fires - generally a very good experience.
Review 24:The staff are fantastic, the bed was so comfortable and the room was great. I can't fault this place. They do everything right. The location could not be better either, right in the centre of the town.
Review 25:We waited 30 minutes for our breakfast and the service was not great (when it arrived it was fine) the en suite bathroom was really old and tired and the shower was terrible.
Review 26:The bed was very comfy and the staff at the restaurant were very friendly.
Review 27:Lovely old hotel with modern facilities but retaining all it's character. A warm welcome, comfortable accomodation and excellent food....what more could one demand!
Review 28:The room we stayed in (19) was unbearably hot even with the window open and the fan provided in the room didn't work.I found this out at about 3am when I couldn't sleep. The standard room we were in was a bit tired for the money- the carpet was frayed in places and the bathroom fittings were dated - impeccably clean though- they are refurbing then all rooms will be executive rooms- hopefully they can look at the temperature settings at the same time.
Review 29:Staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. Public areas of the hotel were fantastic- very high spec but comfortable. Staff did refund £10 off the room price because of the temperature problem.
Review 30:Breakfast was ridiculous . It took 45 mins for a simple order to then have not even cooked toast. It was laughable and we got over it but was a bit annoying as it wasn't exactly busy. The hotel being so old the room was on a slant. No ones fault I know but sleeping 2 nights On a hill made my back a bit uncomfortable. The bathroom is so teeny it's hard to move around.
Review 31:The hotel is lovely. The bar is great and comfortable and nice to relax in. The room is cozy and all the staff where nice.
Review 32:Bathroom very small, broken toilet roll holder and leaky basin tap. The shower controls difficult to adjust when shower on because the water was very hot! Spoilt a nice bedroom.
Review 33:This trip was to be a treat for my husband and I but turned into a rescue trip for me to collect my daughter who had had a road accident in the area on her way to the Green Man festival! I arrived with a very bedraggled daughter in tow and the staff were great - just letting us get on with it and providing excellent room service.
Review 34:Room was a little warm, however fan is provided. As was there for work Internet was a little temperamental at times
Review 35:Staff were very friendly and helpful, room was very clean and comfortable Right in the town centre so able to have a walk around
Review 36:Breakfast was amazing, Staff are all brilliant, Rooms are so clean (which is a big one for me) Beds are fantastically comfy and big. Dinner was also pretty amazing, we cant wait to come back and are already figuring out dates for our next trip so see you soon.
Review 37:The hotel had a refurbishment but only in the main areas and its suites. We unfortunately stayed in a room which seemed old and desperately needs some updating as it hardly reflects the rest of the hotel. It may also be quite noisy on a Saturday night as we heard revellers till wee hours.
Review 38:It is very well located and looks lovely in the reception area and the cocktail bar. Very nice breakfast too.
Review 39:The room was cramped and cluttered - a four foot high fan to compensate for lack of air conditioning. Traffic noise from busy (A4) junction a few yards away meant that keeping window open not an option. En suite bathroom was very poor: a cracked tile over bath, a missing hook on door (with screw holes left), another tile left with screw holes and a general feeling of needing upgrading, including the ancient shower.
Review 40:Staff terrific and restaurant very good.
Review 41:Helpful and friendly staff An hotel full of charm and comfort in an historic town with many interesting things to do. Excellent food at its sister restaurant, The Walnut Tree, which is Michelin starred.
Review 42:Room too hot and a bit cramped. Breakfast wait not good and incorrect on delivery, needed more staff. Waited far too long for toast and coffee, selection limited.
Review 43:Locations very good staff are friendly
Review 44:Our bedroom was in worst position for road traffic noise echoed and amplified by the alleyway.
Review 45:Courteous and friendly staff throughout. Middle of town location with own carpark Lovely breakfast Al fresco dinng in courtyard
Review 46:There was a noisy bunch in the courtyard downstairs at bedtime. They were singing very loud. Credit to the duty manager, who got them to move and stop making a noise.
Review 47:The bed was amazing. The breakfast that was included with our rate was out of this world.
Review 48:All staff were extremely helpful, friendly and courteous, we arrived very late, hungry and tired and they reopened the kitchen so we could have a lovely dinner. Very comfy bed and a quiet sleep. Parking was easy in the hotel’s own car park at the rear of the hotel. Breakfast the following morning had a great variety of choice and was very good. We would definitely stay again.
Review 49:Decided to eat in hotel after having a walk around town. Food very well presented and good quality at reasonable price but bar menu is just a shortened version of restaurant menu so not much choice. Apparently we could have had anything from the restaurant menu but weren't told this.
Review 50:Nicely restored coaching inn with lovely public areas and comfortable bedrooms--we were upgraded so very happy with nicely furnished room overlooking patio at rear, very quiet and with amazing shower!
Review 51:Walking down a bare floored narrow servants quarter corridor to a supposedly deluxe room, which, when we opened the door was an immense disappointment
Review 52:Shared lounge rooms beautifully appointed and decorated, with interesting objects d'art.
Review 53:Creaky floor boards in bedroom.
Review 54:We stayed in the Angel as we were attending the 40th anniversary of Abergavenny Squash Club in the Ballroom. Excellent occasion.
Review 55:This place was really nice. It had a great atmosphere and the dinner and breakfast we had was stunning. Very well located and parking wasn't a problem.
Review 56:bedroom small old and noisy seemed a standard three. star hotel trying to be something higher and failing
Review 57:position in town was very central making visit to church museum and castle easy. own small car park
Review 58:Another time we would choose a deluxe room overlooking the courtyard. Our room at the front of the hotel was noisy but only to be expected in a town centre.
Review 59:The room was spacious and extremely comfortable.
Review 60:The rooms are still very old and creaky, particularly the bathrooms.
Review 61:The public spaces are excellent. Obviously going through a big renovation. I wouldn't pick this as a 3 star hotel when in the bar etc, more 4 star. Only the rooms and particularly the bathroom show it's 3 star rating.
Review 62:On check in we was not told there was work being done in the room above........ This work started at 8:30am and was very loud
Review 63:The hotle was great very nice room
Review 64:The room was too hot and we could not manage to cool it down despite altering the radiator setting and trying to open the window. The floor was very creaky which didn't affect us too much but I did wonder if anyone ajoining or below was annoyed by it!
Review 65:Decor and layout of hotel was lovely -welcoming and stylish at the same time. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable. I had a choice of soft and firm pillows which was an excellent idea. Breakfast was lovely with a good choice and arrived promptly. Staff very courteous and professional. We didn't feel at all hurried when the bar was closing and staff were very polite in making sure we had everything we wanted before they left. Would definitely love to stay again and sample the evening meal!
Review 66:No remote control and they did not have a spare, offered to change us to another room. Did not bother as no problem turning it over on the set, got a bit of excercise as well.
Review 67:Everything apart from the TV
Review 68:Room was dated and needed redecorating. Stayed in far nicer hotel rooms for same price. We noticed the hotel was not fully booked and they didn't upgrade us to a nicer room.
Review 69:Food Service Bar Restaurant
Review 70:Bathroom was a bit compact but no problem apart from if you brushed towel rail situated waist to eye level next to toilet. This was extremely hot!
Review 71:Sympathetically restored building with some nice touches in the communal areas. Nice bar with log fire, cosy rest area, and very pleasant staff. Close to everything with good parking. Full English breakfast was exceptional.
Review 72:There were no negative issues to raise!
Review 73:The friendliness of staff. The excellent service. Wonderful food, in particular Afternoon Tea! Private Dining was very special!
Review 74:The flood squeeked everywhere we walked and we were most concerned for the people in the room underneath. The room was so hot we couldnt breathe and we couldnt get the window open. Decour a bit tired. This is the 4th time I have stayed in the hotel and up until now I have felt as though it was a real treat. This time I have to say I felt as though I had been down graded.
Review 75:Loved the bed and bedding. Toiletries were fab and towels were lush. Breakfast was super although we did have to eat it in the bar.
Review 76:Was a little noisy due to creaky floors but this is to be expected at an older property.
Review 77:The staff were all very welcoming and the room was clean: the bed was very comfortable. A wide selection of items for breakfast and it was all cooked freshly.
Review 78:we stayed in room 19 only problem was how small the bathroom was.
Review 79:The location was just right as i was on a Christmas works party around Abergavenny. Not to far from the local pubs and reception is 24 hours which was great we came back at 2:00 am
Review 80:Disappointed in level of service. Continually having to make repeated requests for the most basic of items. Staff appeared to be poorly trained and very busy despite this being a mid week booking.
Review 81:Style of the hotel and good food and drink.
Review 82:Inattentive waiting staff at breakfast. In fact I think they were waiting in a different room because only occasionally did they make an appearance. Noisy feather pillows. No WiFi. Someone else's hairs in my towel.
Review 83:Reception staff pleasant. Public rooms pleasant to sit in.
Review 84:Cleanliness of room was not good, very poor. The toilet was not cleaned from previous occupants and that caused a problem which the hotel tried hard to resolve thereafter and did so quickly and to my satisfaction.
Review 85:Stylish hotel with an affluent feel.
Review 86:The heating was turned on high on a mild day, so had to keep the windows open, which naturally resulted in being woken up at 02.30 am by inebriated loud , people on the street.
Review 87:comfortable bed, superb shower , good wifi, excellent food.
Review 88:Standing outside for 20 minutes waiting for a pre booked taxi, with no real help from reception staff. Finding out that the hotel owns The Walnut Tree restaurant but there is no incentive to use it ie discount.
Review 89:High Tea was very impressive. Central location & parking ideal.
Review 90:Entire frontage of the hotel was under tarpaulins for maintenance when I arrived. As a courtesy, there should have been a forewarning on the web site or at point of booking. Detracted considerably from the charm.
Review 91:Cosy market town hotel with friendly staff and exceptionally good food. Breakfast is a treat.
Review 92:The lay out of the bar and also the top bar was very cold. Very disappointed you did not have Lobster and Langoustine next time we visit we must make sure you have these dishes in stock.
Review 93:Loved the hotel, the decoration I loved all the colours and fixtures and fittings. The cloakrooms were lovely, I loved the lighting and the mirrors. All the staff were very polite and very friendly. Would definitely stay at this hotel again. Our compliments to the chef's.
Review 94:25Watt bulbs in reading lights in bed-room, which was supposed to be an executive suite.
Review 95:the orchid arrangements in all public spaces and in the rooms.
Review 96:small bedroom even for executive suite, noisy workmen early in Saturday morning, room too hot and no way to cool, too expensive- I stayed in a better hotel in Rome for 35% less 2 weeks before! (albeit one of the large multi=star chains,)
Review 97:location, general hustle and bustle during the day, food, service and cleanliness of the beds and en suite
Review 98:Heating. Could not find out how to put on towel rail or radiators. Shower room cramped and door hung badly on wrong side and opening inward. I would have expected a bath in a room of this size and price.
Review 99:Excellent food. Associated with Walnut Tree which has been well known for its food. Room spacious with o sofa.
Review 100:Everything was acceptable and the weather for October was great too.
Review 101:Everything and in particular the politeness of the reception and waiting on staff. The food at the wedding reception was truly excellent
Review 102:Very good food in the Restaurant. The angel menu is a very well made 3 course menu for an very affordable price. Rooms are clean and have everything you need. The bar has a wide selection of drinks and a very good service. All staff always smile.
Review 103:Room billed as "wheelchair accessible" wasn't - OK for semi-ambulant and frail/elderly etc (OK as currently the former!). £25 for a dog to stay as the riooms need deep clean after apparently - we farmed ours out to family on arrival consequently - but dogs very welcome aside of this fee.
Review 104:Location, a nice busy feel to it, and it is clearly popular with the locals. The seafood platter was excellent. Staff all customer focussed and friendly
Review 105:Couldn't fault it!
Review 106:I asked if the hotel could provide a long bed. They offered a free upgrade to a lovely room (but no window view due to external refurbishment) with the biggest bed I have ever seen. Perfect! Very attentive, engaging and good humoured staff. The quality of food was excellent, and the menu spot-on....push the boat out, or keep it tied-up! A lovely atmosphere in the hotel.
Review 107:Nothing
Review 108:Because this is a central spot in a very old town the complete hotel complex is just that - a complex set of spaces, you need to learn to find your way around. It could be better signed We were surprised to learn that breakfast was not included in the bill - that could have been clearer at time of booking. Also there is a general problem of putting large modern furniture into a room designed 300 years ago; the well appointed bedroom felt crowded.
Review 109:This wonderful old hotel has been exceptionally reworked. The quality of architectural modification and the materials used are of the highest quality - very pleasing to my own very trained eye! The dinner we chose was exceptional and not expensive; good waiter service. Good parking, right at the back of the complex.
Review 110:Our room was next to the road and because it was very warm we had to leave the window open at night.....noise from late night revellers and traffic interrupted sleep. No air con.
Review 111:Good,central location for exploring the beautiful countryside. Good quality breakfast. Good size bed.
Review 112:Beds were too small.....we like a 5foot bed!
Review 113:Loved the location, the helpfulness of all staff we encountered, the comfort and decor were just lovely. Hotel is well worth a short break. Also in lovely area for walking and sight seeing.
Review 114:The location which is a pretty little town with plenty of eateries and and little gift shops. Abergavenny Castle is almost next door with tables to sit outside which we did as the weather was good.
Review 115:breakfast service slow, coffee tasteless and served in a puny one cup cafeteria. Expensive compared to other excellent hotels in the vicinity. Don't like room only rates, prefer room, Bed and breakfast price
Review 116:Quality of staff, excellent decor and finishes
Review 117:The executive room we had was rather small, such that there was very little room between the bed and the wall on one side. The bathroom lacked basic facilities such as a suitable shelf to rest toiletries on, no water glass and no nonslip mat for the bath/shower. The room overlooked a courtyard and was very noisy until the bar closed at eleven thirty.
Review 118:The breakfast and the general ambience was good.
Review 119:Staff lovely, liked the feel of this old building , its very classy. Loved the high ceilings. Situated in town centre, car park easy to get to , 2 minutes from the castle.
Review 120:There was scaffolding up against the window. The airconditioning did not work. If you had window open then you had road noise.
Review 121:The staff were very helpful. The room was lovely and clean.
Review 122:Doors close very loudly. Sounds like slamming in the night, although I don't think it is intentional.
Review 123:Personel was very friendly and allowed us to stay an hour longer in the room. Car Parking is good. Sitting at inner court yard is very nice.
Review 124:The bedroom at the front was noisy from traffic on the main road. (However we were given a change of room to a quieter room on request with no problems). Also we would have liked a duvet rather than blankets.
Review 125:Very clean, beautiful, tasteful interiors, excellent staff and well-run with a happy, pleasant atmosphere. The breakfasts were wonderful, with lots of choice and excellent in every way. There is a very pleasant courtyard and the hotel is spacious and we would recommend it.
Review 126:This hotel is outstanding. One of the best we have ever stayed in. Courteous, helpful staff. Lovely location, excellent facilities, and seemed to be very integral and involved in the town
Review 127:Nothing negative!
Review 128:A lovely stay. Super room and courteous, professional staff. I think I may have been given an upgrade? My room was very elegantly designed and super comfortable.
Review 129:Staff fantastic, showed a willingness to please
Review 130:Food was superb, room was very comfortable and staff were very proffessional and friendly
Review 131:B
Review 132:The food was delicious. Wesley Hammond is an excellent chef.
