Reviews for Grand Hotel Negre Coste
Review 1:The room is characterless. No paintings or anything on the wall. Having said that, I think it was refurbished recently as I could still smell the paint. The windows are horrible, they don't open on one side and there was a strange smell in between windows
Review 2:This hotel is all about location, you can walk around and go back for a short rest or a toilet break anytime you want, because this hotel is right in the centre and everything revolves around that street. And if you're lucky enough, you get a room on the top floor and you get awesome views of the city. The hotel is very clean, but overpriced for what it is. I expected more. Also the lift's door is very hard to open.
Review 3:We were a group occupying 3 rooms so the comments reflect the experience of some in the older section and others on the renovated floors. The hotel was under major renovations...so the difficulties are likely temporary (problems with air conditioning /older rooms in need of renovations)
Review 4:The location is fabulous , at the centre of cour Mirabeau.Staff was very helpful .The newly renovated rooms are well appointed and comfortable.
Review 5:Nothing bad. The staff moved us to new rooms where needed.
Review 6:Newly renovated rooms are excellent. The hotel is being totally renovated. So check what room you might get. The old ones are more than tired. The staff are excellent and the hotel is right in the middle of the city. Perfect for easy access to everything.
Review 7:Very poor parking facilities. Access to the parking was from a narrow road turning through a very narrow gate where 2 empty concrete flower pots had been left. Breakfast was very poor. Cold meat looked as if it had been lying out for ages.
Review 8:Hotel right in the busy Town Centre
Review 9:Location for vehicular access was dreadful and parking very expensive when you find it. Very little staff presence even at breakfast when we had to search for coffee. Construction ongoing in hotel which was not mentioned. Public areas sparse and atmosphere dusty. Room new but sparse and not welcoming. WiFi did not work outside reception. Poor and expensive breakfast. Overall very poor and pricey for a hotel highly rated yet poor value for money. Huge disappointment.
Review 10:Location on Main Street for pedestrian access. Help from front desk. Sadly nothing else positive.
Review 11:The location was perfect for getting around Aix. The facilites were high class. The staff spoke english and were very helpful. We stayed a second night at the last minute and it was no trouble.
Review 12:Breakfast plain dull - not a nice room either
Review 13:We stayed in a refurbished room which was of a very high standard. Locations fantastic. Secure parking very helpful.
Review 14:The hotel is located near the middle of the Cours Mirabeau and is an excellent location for exploring the area. The hotel is still in the process of updating its room. The new rooms are contemporary and very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. Entering the parking area in anything but a small car is a challenge. You should call ahead just before you get there so that they can arrange to let you in the garage. Otherwise you will be blocking the street while you try to decide what to do.
Review 15:Our room was in need of refurbishment. Whenever the shower was being used in the room above, water would drip and make a loud racket on our ceiling. The walls/door was also paper thin and you could hear everything going on outside. Also rather pricey for a 3* hotel considering the above.
Review 16:Very helpful lady behind reception and central location
Review 17:There was nothing not to like
Review 18:The hotel is right in the middle of everything on the main street off the old town. Cafes, shops, etc are right outside the door of the hotel. The hotel has a relatively large parking lot in the back of the hotel - a luxury for this type of location. The friendliest hotel staff we met in a week long French vacation. We were assigned a brand new room on the fourth floor of the hotel which is undergoing a renovation. There was some noise in the middle of the day from the other floors but unless you plan to sleep during the day, it shouldn't present a problem
Review 19:The hotel is located on the main street and easy to get to from the train station. Several restaurants close by as well as shopping! The staff was extremely helpful and nice. The staff speaks English but try to at least speak a little French to them! :)
Review 20:Wi-Fi was spotty. I could connect with my cellphone but not with my laptop.
Review 21:The location is perfect. It is very close to restaurants and shopping places.
Review 22:Ironing service - €11 per piece!! This is just extortion. I just went out crinkly of course! European hotels really need to equip rooms with an iron and ironing board. It would be a draw card... The property lists 'laundry' as one of the services it offers. When I enquired about this the staff thought I was talking about having the sheets changed. This really needs to be removed from their advertisement.
Review 23:Perfect location
Review 24:the wifi is seriously intermittent...a lot like not having wifi. the rooms are a bit sparse, but they are so clean it doesn't matter.
Review 25:The desk clerks were smart, amusing and friendly and they made great suggestions about restaurants.
Review 26:There is more to the Negre Coste than its perfect spot on the Cours Mirabeau. The staff should be complimented too: They are friendly and kind (and get a bonus point for speaking English). I can certainly recommend taking breakfast outside on the terrace early in the morning, watching Cezanne's home town waking up and getting ready for the day. What a lovely place to stay!
Review 27:The hotel was in the process of renovating the rooms and we were one of the first customers to stay in a completed room -- thus it was very nice. We rode in on a tandem bicycle and the staff stored it in a locked garage for us.
Review 28:A small complaint but the pillows were a bit hard :-D
Review 29:The hotel is right in the middle of it all! Restaurants, cafés, a street market all literally on our doorstep. The hotel is currently being refurbished. We got a newly done room on the fourth floor and were very happy with everything.
Review 30:The room needed blockout curtains, the light beams into the room as soon as the sun rises
Review 31:The hotel is at the doorstep of the main street, so convenient! We were put in a newly refurbished room on the 4th floor, in fact it didn't even look like anyone had stayed there before, it was spotlessly clean and so beautiful and modern! The staff were so so helpful and friendly :)
Review 32:Booking needs to update their description of services for this hotel as per the request of the hotel staff
Review 33:The staff was very friendly, we had a nice chat. Also they pointed out that despite repeated requests to Booking.com the site was still showing the Queen bed offered in all rooms, which in fact is a mistake since some rooms do have twin beds (like ours). Other than that we found that our room was nicely decorated, clean and equipped with comfortable beds, all good. Also, the location of the hotel is excellent, there's a nice market right in front and multiple bars & restaurants around. Finally it's only about a 10 minute walk to the bus station where the bus to the TGV station stops
Review 34:Hotel was under renovation. Family owned property. Very helpful and friendly Owners and staff. However booking.com should have a policy to indicate hotels under renovation so that travellers are aware and make a decision.
Review 35:It is very very difficult to find the hotel if you are driving. More instructions are needed when booked online.
Review 36:The front desk staff couldn't have been more helpful! The location is perfect and the parking was great. Great view of Street and market.
Review 37:There was a construction work going on on my floor.
Review 38:The breakfast was great. They even had fresh fruit, unlike the other hotels where I stayed in France.
Review 39:Paid parking (15 Euro per night), breakfast was not included.
Review 40:The hotel is right in the heart of the city. The room had air conditioning and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Restaurants and things to see in Aix-en-Provence were very close.
Review 41:The hotel is old and there was a new owner, who started a remake of the hotel, but did not tell us about that before our arrival, neither when we arrived. So we could not stay in the room during the day because of the noise the workers made.
Review 42:No complaints
Review 43:The location is wonderful, the service is good and the staff friendly and efficient, the rooms are fine. We have stayed there before and we will go again....that is the ultimate complement. Their parking arrangements are good too.
Review 44:The rooms were very dated but I can't complain when it has just been taken over by new owners and they are in the process of renovating.
Review 45:The location of this hotel is excellent right on the cours Mirabeau. And we were lucky enough to wake up on Tuesday morning with the street filled with market stalls. The hotel itself was being renovated when we arrived and the entire 4th floor was closed. Would love to go back when the renovations are finished as it would have once been a beautiful hotel. The outside is such a beautiful building. Our room on the third floor was ok the bed however was great. The staff were very helpful.
Review 46:Excellent location in Cours Mirabeau with easy access to main sights of interest in Aix/P. such as Hotel Caumont,Palais de l'Archeveche and Les Deux Garcons (where Zola and Cezanne used to meet for a pastis).Elegant decor.Friendly staff.Large quiet room with double bed.Historic interest: Louis XVI once played tennis here ! Exceptionally good value for money as my stay was in mid-summer and at the height of the Festival.Last stayed here in 2010.
Review 47:Construction on the fourth floor (we were on the third!) meant loud banging from 8am to 7pm daily.
Review 48:Great location in the centre of Aix. A hotel with character. Friendly staff.
Review 49:Some decoration needs refurbishment.
Review 50:Perfect position right in the centre of town. Good Wi-Fi. Fairly basic rooms but good value. Unchanged for many years with a touch of old world charm in the public space.
Review 51:Refurb is going on on the upper floors so ask for a lower room on the backside to avoid noise.
Review 52:The hotel is situated in the best possible place for market goers. The rooms are big and although the temps were in the 30s the A/C kept the room wonderfully cool.
Review 53:The service The attitude The room was old and needn't redoing wallpaper coming off wall because of damp tiles in bathroom dirty Girl on reception rude and not helpful
Review 54:Not a lot
Review 55:Some building work was taking place on top floor but as we are early risers it didn't really make an impact. Think it would have done for others who like a lie in! We couldn't get wifi but not really a problem.
Review 56:The car park was essential and the hotel staff were incredibly helpful and charming. The room was a bit shabby (bathroom in particular) but overall we had a wonderful time and the location and friendly staff were key for us.
Review 57:Very disappointed. Booking clearly stated queen bed. None available. Hotel knew it was a busy weekend and that we had nowhere to go. Hotel management told use we got "such a great price " relative to "full price " that no further concession was needed. Generally hotel could care less that we booked one thing and received another. Tough luck.
Review 58:Some refurbisment and tidying up of the place would not go amiss. Hair dryer weak. No bar service.
Review 59:Very helpful young staff team. We could go out of the hotel right into the heart of the street life. Bedroom was lovely with space, antique furniture and very clean comfortable bed.
Review 60:You must ask location of parking at hotel. It's impossible to find by yourself.
Review 61:Very nice location. If you need parking, you must reserve at hotel.
Review 62:le point fort :la situation

Review 69:Rooms are small and mattress is too soft.
Review 70:Great location
Review 71:Nothing.
Review 72:Everything.
Review 73:We liked the location and the modern room. The stuff was very helpful.
Review 74:Adjacent rooms being renovated, and noisey during day, workers smoking and smoke could be smelt in our room
Review 75:Driving in Aix is not for the faint hearted and the car park is not very easily accessed.
Review 76:Central Location for a visit to Aix en Provence.
Review 77:The hotel is undergoing renovations. The room was sparsely furnished, and the bathroom was very small.
Review 78:The location is fabulous.
Review 79:Construction noise from continued renovations.
Review 80:Fantastic location New rooms
Review 81:Hotel is being updated, our rooms were excellent. Staff more than helpful and friendly, excellent English spoken.

Review 121:We could sit at tables in front of hotel & drink wine bought from the supermarket a few doors up.
