Reviews for The Kings Head Hotel
Review 1:Room Previous guest's tissues behind the bed on the floor. Toilet seat had a paper seal - implying that is had been cleaned and checked. However, on opening it, the water was brown. Had it been checked or not? Macerator went on when just the sink was used. Breakfast Breakfast promised to start at 7.30 - but did not start until after 8pm on a Friday (a working day.) So, I had to go back to my room twice while I waited for the late breakfast to start. No breakfast menu on table - nor offered. First coffee instant - very, very poor for a hotel., second coffee was filter. No explanation of this anomaly as the waiter possibly presumed that I would not notice. Breakfast came with toast - but no butter, nor jam offered, until I asked. This gave the impression that no training had been given to the waiter. It's 2016! I heard that there are recently new owners. They need to get the basics of service fixed to ensure repeat business for what is a characterful, well located inn.
Review 2:Location was very central. Bathroom clean. Helpful fixing of a small TV problem was done quickly.
Review 3:Breakfast was a little later than advertised and the new owners do not provide Cereal fruit Orange juice etc
Review 4:Location is good, I have stayed before, I found the overall stay very good, however since the owners have changed I found breakfast a different experience.
Review 5:We were on the top floor but could still hear the live music until 11pm and during breakfast workman were drilling and changing locks in the dinning room .Go figure!!
Review 6:Nice staff. Excellent breakfast.
Review 7:Bar area was very full due to a Friday night singer, so couldn't sit down anywhere for a drink. So we bought some drinks and retired to our room. Not really a complaint, it just wasn't our sort of night
Review 8:Great location in the centre of town.Check in was quick and easy, very pleasant staff. Room was very cosy. Delicious breakfast. All in all, a very pleasant stay.
Review 9:Due to a missed ferry from Ireland we arrived at 03:00am. Greatly appreciated the pleasant attitude and help of the landlord despite rousing him at this ridiculously late hour.
Review 10:TV was off during night and in the morning. It appears that they disconnected the TV/WiFi from about 1 AM. I am a night worker so often get up as my sleep is disturbed, it does so happen that i needed the sleep so only got up once. But i needed to go on line to my credit card and couldn't.
Review 11:They had a place for my bike, and went out of their way to help out.
Review 12:Extremely small room and bathroom, no wi-fi within the room, two channels working on the television, Radion Wales and BBC1. Hotel is rated as 4 star, which was one of the reasons I booked it, most definitely not that standard.
Review 13:Location of the hotel in relation to where I needed to be. Pleasant staff especially the owners.
Review 14:Its location is spot on I found it very clean an excellent breakfast and pleasant enough staff. While I was there the bar and restaurant were very busy always a good sign.
Review 15:When checking out, the rate 'agreed' via Booking.com wasn't what they tried to charge me so had to query it. This may be a fault of Booking.com rather than the hotel.
Review 16:Location was perfect for my requirements and the room I had was pretty comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was very good and nice coffee!
Review 17:Great location in centre of Abergavenny. Staff hospitable and room was lovely, overlooking street but very peaceful (even when there was karaoke on in the pub downstairs). Very nice breakfast.
Review 18:Bed room was in need of titivating.... Wall paper pealing off, hole in light shade. Bed to hard.
Review 19:Breakfast was very nice Full Welsh was nice... Good selection . Staff very polite. Restaurant good food as well.
Review 20:Not sure when my room was last let but found it quite dusty. But I am a clean freak. Was disappointed that I could feel the springs but I was working so much with little sleep, didn't bother me after the first night.
Review 21:As was the case with everyone I came across in Abergavenny and surrounding region, staff were friendly and very accommodating. Good breakfast and good central location (if you don't mind weekend drinkers noise at night). Having a good wi-fi was important and worked perfect.
Review 22:Wifi was not available in our room so we either had to stand in the passage close to the modem/router or sit in the bar. The family room only had a double bed and one single bed, unsuitable for three adults as we specified in our booking. No restaurant available for dinner on Sunday evenings. TV was tiny.
Review 23:Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was delicious. Plenty of options. Staff provided assistance with an extra bed in the room. Well situated in the centre of town, with loading zone right outside the door.
Review 24:the on suite facility was very basic. The wooden sliding door separating the shower room from the bedroom was awkward to use, and extremely noisy when operated.
Review 25:The location and the breakfast. Also the helpful staff.
Review 26:There was nothing to dislike within the hotel. My only critism would be the early morning cleaning of the streets as we had a front facing bedroom.
Review 27:The location of the hotel and the cleanliness and service
Review 28:We liked everything!
Review 29:The warm, friendly welcome and helpfulness of the staff. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts and evening meals were cooked to perfection and were delicious. We were made to feel as though it really was "home from home".
Review 30:On street parking is a bit hit and miss but I was lucky - free between 6pm and 9am, with pay car parks close by.
Review 31:Great location, clean, comfortable, friendly, good value, lovely breakfasts, warm welcome. Just the sort of traditional then centre coaching house hotel that I like but well modernised.
Review 32:Central location, with very nicely presented rooms and a hearty breakfast too. We were on motorcycles and were made very welcome, with the owners putting themselves out to house our bikes in a secure location overnight.
Review 33:The single room (7) has a huge full-length mirror right at the end of the bed - think the room could be rearranged.... and please put hooks on the back of the room and the bathroom door. Otherwise, really comfy, thank you.
Review 34:The warm welcome. The central location.
Review 35:Didn't really experience anything negative. On the Friday there was a band in the bar but other than the faint beat of the music didn't interfere with our sleep. It was worth it to have a large airy room over looking the street.
Review 36:Convenient location with friendly staff. The cleanliness of the bathroom and bedroom was excellent.
Review 37:Great kippers for breakfast. Easy parking on the street outside in the evening. Sensationally painful singer in the bar on the Friday night. Worth a trip just for that...
Review 38:This is our 2nd year staying at The Kings Head Hotel, with our parents and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the warm welcome we received. The rooms are comfortable and everything provided. The breakfast choice is superb and the service very friendly. Really made you feel at home. A pleasant hotel that we will book again.
Review 39:The hotel has very good location in the centre of the town. The staff are very nice and helpful. The room is clean and comportable, all you need after hiking in the mountains! I would hilghly recommend this hotel for staying!
Review 40:Had to pay for parking. Wifi in room was quite weak, but was OK in bar/restaurant.
Review 41:Located right in the middle of the town, close to shops etc. Easy to find. Doesn't have its own parking, but we parked outside to check in and there a few car parks close by.
Review 42:Very helpful team ... sandwiches in the room and wine on our return from the match... Arranged taxi to pick us up from Cardiff ... that was a big wow.. thanks
Review 43:Only two small things - that wifi only worked in 1 out of 2 rooms and there is no on-site parking but would still recommend this hotel.
Review 44:Lovely staff (all very helpful with our group which included a young baby and lots of stuff!), very clean room, excellent modern bathroom with power shower, relaxed atmosphere, gorgeous breakfast and great location.
Review 45:The room was warm, the bed really comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful.we needn't have worried about parking- the nearby car park was cheap and seems to have no problems.
Review 46:The breakfast accompaniments - would be nice to have a small dish of butters/jams/sauces etc for the table, not to have to keep going to the service area.
Review 47:I liked the room, the central location and the small touches like a VERY nice tea tray with bottled water.
Review 48:I stayed at the hotel for a single night for a business meeting nearby. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was also nicely presented and set me up for the day. Nice pub downstairs to grab a pint after my long drive too!
Review 49:Tv did not work (instructions followed) Split in shower head and some mold Boxed tissues with one tissue! Bathroom door would not close
Review 50:Breakfast was lovely and staff friendly
Review 51:Walking in through bar area a bit disconcerting at first.
Review 52:The bedroom and e-suite were immaculate. The bed extremely comfortable with beautiful crisp white sheets. highly recommend the space to study and well appointed. Free parking from 5pm to 9.15. Breakfast to die for with very friendly staff.
Review 53:The hotel is right in the center of Abergavenny. We stayed here during the Abergavenny Food Festival and it was a perfect location for this. It isn't a fancy hotel, but it was clean and the service was friendly. There were many options for breakfast and it was delicious.
Review 54:Seriously lacking in cleaning department in the bathroom. There was used soap left in shower, the shower cubicle was mouldy & grimy but worse was the toilet, insultingly a "clean sash" had been placed on the lid but it was obvious it hadnt been cleanded at all by the evidence of poo splatters on the lid, toilet seat and rim and poo around the bowl. Absolutely disgusting.
Review 55:Nothing in particular
Review 56:Noise very early in morning from street cleaners Bar closed at 8p.m. on the Sunday we were there. Most of Abergavenny was also closed at this time!
Review 57:Breakfast was excellent. Staff were helpful and pleasant.Rooms were spotlessly clean
Review 58:The only criticism I had was the early check out ,but on speaking to the lovely owners were able to check out a bit later .
Review 59:We were actually at a wedding in nearby Glangrwyney Court , but the hotel fitted in lovely with our plans coming in late at night, lovely comfortable rooms ,and a fantastic breakfast , staff very helpful arranging transport etc couldn't t fault it lovely stay
Review 60:Being woken up at 5.30am by mechanical road sweeper, binmen and market traders unloading goods. Noise went on and on including local church chimes every hour throughout the night. No immediate parking. No lift & extremely steep staircase of four flights. Broadband didn't work in room and TV only intermittently. Room extremely tight as a double.
Review 61:Good breakfast Staff attentive and friendly
Review 62:We arrived on Sunday pm to find no food served on Sunday evening as pub closed 8pm
Review 63:Breakfast was very good. Staff were very understanding when we changed to a local Hotel
Review 64:Hotel Restaurant was not open Tuesday night, no mention of this when I booked my room. No hotel parking available, have to park on street or pay at local car parks.
Review 65:Friendly staff, very good breakfast. Ideal for centre of town.
Review 66:Stayed during the heatwave and would have liked to been able to open windows wider to get fresh air.
Review 67:Great location Breakfast room decor Friendly waiting staff at breakfast.
Review 68:very disappointing as was husband's 71 birthday up 2 flights of stairs, this was not indicated when booking made street parking only and only available from 5pm TV not working, husband keen athletics and cricket fan lock on bathroom door faulty, was locked in substitute room not up to same standard, not worth the money were charged for the room although didn't stay
Review 69:Nice room spacious clean tastfully decorated staff Ok Abergaveny lovely people friend,ly and helpful. the Big Pit wonderful worth the journey and problems with hotel
Review 70:Very uncomfortable, thin matress. Not even a hook for over-bath shower head - just hand-held. Lighting too poor to read.
Review 71:Nicely decorated, spacious rooms (nr 1 & 3) with pleasant outlook over main street. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order.
Review 72:Reception not obvious - just a pub, Fiddly shampoo and shower gel sachets (and not enough for an overnight stay !)
Review 73:Breakfast, Courteous staff, Central location, Large room (for a single), LOTS of mains sockets in the room (and in places where they are actually useful !)
Review 74:Owner/manager extremely obnoxious .food unacceptably slow to appear and largely inedible. Debit card number used prior to checkout. Very disappointing. Avoid at all costs.
Review 75:Some staff tried to be helpful.
Review 76:We were two guys starting a walking holiday and the Kings Head was a great starting point. Friendly staff and good food. Good central location. Clean comfortable rooms..Recommended.
Review 77:You cannot get food on Tuesday evenings in the restaurant and there is no car park , you have to use the public car park about 5 minutes walk away
Review 78:Overall the room was pleasant and clean
Review 79:As the building is very old, it does not have a lift for those who struggle with stairs.
Review 80:Excellent room and staff who went out of their way to assist the guest.
Review 81:Cannot fault anything about the king head.. Clean comfortable room.. Good food and service.. All round excellent stay there.. Would recommend this hotel to anyone ..
Review 82:Unfortunately I could hear the live music that was playing for the party downstairs but that was a one off and the whole town was in party mode anyway for the big cycling events.
Review 83:From the moment I arrived I had really excellent service from all the staff and it felt very genuine too. I had a lovely bright room at the top which was a good size for a single room and it was very clean. Breakfast on Saturday was very good too with plenty on offer to fill me up. As I had to leave before breakfast on Sunday I had a lovely pack lunch which was very welcome after I had finished my bike race. Would definitely like to return again.
