Reviews for Hôtel des Augustins

Review 1:difficult to park due to busy narrow streets however found an underground car park 5 mins walk away

Review 2:perfect location to see Aix en Provence Staff were lovely

Review 3:It was very difficult to reach the hotel by car. We ended up having to park a long way away in a parking lot and schlep our suitcases through town to get to our hotel.

Review 4:Location was great for access to the center of town. Desk clerk was funny and helpful, with good English.

Review 5:The room we booked was far too small with a tiny window with an unpleasant view so we upgraded, costing us much more. This larger room had a large patio which we loved and used every afternoon to relax over a glass of wine. However, it wasn't very clean and the awning needed replacing.

Review 6:The location and hotel lobby were amazing. Breakfast was a terrific deal for 13 euros. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant.

Review 7:No breakfast included and very expensive.

Review 8:Beautiful hotel which is a converted monastery. We had the delux room at the top which was very spacious with plenty of sitting area and lovely bathroom. It was however very expensive and breakfast was not included.

Review 9:Room too hot without air con on and too cold when on, couldn't get temperature right. Bathroom a bit awkward to use.

Review 10:Central location. Lovely friendly staff. Good breakfast. Beautiful welcoming decor in foyer and breakfast room. Overall enjoyed stay greatly.

Review 11:The room was very, very small and the view from the window was the opposite building. The specific room pictures that were featured in the description were not all true - there was no balcony in the room. We mentioned about this to the reception staff member, but he didn't bother to explain. He just said that the room with the balcony will be free tomorrow...hmmm. Not the point and not a good customer service... The WiFi was horrible - it worked only occasionally. Had to go to the reception twice to get it sorted.

Review 12:The hotel lobby and all the public places at the hotel were very beautiful. The building is very old and the architecture and decor of the hotel are accordingly. Location is absolutely fantastic.

Review 13:Aircon generally good - just a little less effective overnight but great to come back to a cool room each evening. Wi-fi signal not so good in our room but fine in the lobby. Otherwise perfect!

Review 14:Beautiful lobby with free wi-fi, great staff - friendly and helpful, perfect location and a mini-bar was helpful too. Really peaceful hotel in the heart of the city. We loved it!

Review 15:The room safe that was provided was completely inadequate. It was not bolted to the cabinet and so small that anyone could have taken it easily out of the hotel room. It had no working batteries and even when I got the receptionist to give me new ones, the locking procedure did not work. When at last I took the entir safe to the receptionist with new charged batteries installed, he did not know the instructions and , had to read them, and had mixed success: one time it locked and one time it did not. It never worked for me and my spouse and even if it had locked anyone could have taken it easily from the room. It had no digital display for the user selected code. . Hotel safe in lobby was offered, , but that is inconvenient and not why we got a room with a safe at time of booking. I then had to carry my valuables with me at all times, which was annoying. The airco unit was defectiv and slow. It never got the room to a reasonable cooling level of 72F. The remote control did not work. The unit control did not work either. The hotel might offer another room, but in the end it is clear that it's management cannot handle such important details before they assign a room. Other hotels we stayed in in Arles and Nice in the same price range got all these details right. The staircase was dangerous because of a combination of narrow spiral treads and no railing in places. It does not matter that there is also a a tiny working elevator, since this stair issue could have been taken care of a long time ago. I would not go back.

Review 16:It is not possible to come by car to the entrance of the hotel, therefore you have to bring your luggage through the pedestrian zone. However not far .

Review 17:Excellent location. Friendly and helpful staff. Pleasant atmosphere and nice decoration of the lobby.

Review 18:A nice hotel in a perfect location. We stayed only two nights and everything we wanted to see or to do was maximum 5 minutes walk. We did not have breakfast in the hotel we preferred to visit the local bakery shops that exist really close to the hotel

Review 19:Some basic's not up ok: Towels worn, used soap bottles in the bathroom. Bathroom not up to standard with the rest of the hotel, could use renovation and poorly designed. Price on the high side.

Review 20:- Great location, nice building and great looking lobby. - Basic but clean, quiet and tasteful room. - Good bed

Review 21:We were expecting to have a safe in our room as booking.com described but there wasn't one. We were told that people kept stealing the whole safe since it was small enough to fit into a suitcase. What's the point of having a safe that small and portable? Also, the window of our room was left wide open twice by the maid while we were gone.

Review 22:I loved the stained glass in the building and the location.

Review 23:Didn't know the public parking garage was so close until after checking into the hotel.

Review 24:Able to walk anywhere in old town and enjoy the town leaving the car parked

Review 25:The location was perfect. It was in the center of the historic district of Aix en Provence. The staff was friendly and helpful. They helped me with my French vocabulary.

Review 26:I needed more logistical information upon my arrival in Aix. I drove in with the GPS on, but it did not register the fact that some streets in the old city become pedestrian walkways in the afternoon. The GPS insisted that I drive down streets that were blocked to traffic. I finally parked the car and walked in. Once at the hotel, the gentleman at the front desk was extremely helpful and saved the day!

Review 27:I had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel staff was wonderful and gave me excellent recommendations for dinner. The Sole Meuniere at the Cote Cours was without a doubt one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. I loved Aix. What a beautiful town!

Review 28:Most hotels we have experienced in this category provided a good breakfast as part of its price, even in Paris.

Review 29:Small but comfortable room with excellent well-designed bathroom, windows keep out street noise almost entirely

Review 30:Our room was somber, looking into a small yard (a pit would be better description). Cleanliness is average (for France) and poor for Central Europe (e.g. Slovenia or Austria). Very expensive compared to Paris, Vienna, Venice or even London.

Review 31:Location of the hotel. Big room, friendly staff. Good options for breakfast just around the corner, no need to take it in the hotel.

Review 32:The only thing we didn't like was how loud the street noise was, but that had nothing to do with the hotel. The hotel was awesome!

Review 33:The location of this cool hotel is perfect. Right off of the Main Street and city centre. The old charm is what drew us in and we loved it. I would recommend asking for a courtyard room because the city sounds are extremely loud. Everyone has a moped and apparently think it's cool to rev them all night long. Sleeping with the windows shut does block the sound. Thank goodness for air conditioning! Beautiful property! We would definitely return.

Review 34:There is nothing we disliked.

Review 35:Excellent location, very friendly and helpful staff; Very original and creative remake of an old convent into a pretty hotel. An excellent discovery during our trip through France.

Review 36:The only thing wrong in our room was the shower. Used other rooms shower until we mastered the art of not flooding the bathroom.

Review 37:We booked two rooms one deluxe the other standard for our daughter . Our room with a view and balcony were things to look forward to at the end of the day. It is well worth the extra money for this room.

Review 38:There was a strong smell of carpet cleaner so we kept windows open to bring fresh air and that was it. The bathroom could do with a little remodel and a curtain to bath.

Review 39:I was surprised that the place was so quiet, being in the center of town. So convenient to get anywhere on foot. Staff was professional. Gorgeous decor.

Review 40:Lighting in the room was horrible. If I wanted to do my makeup and hair while my husband was shaving and dressing , I had to use a hand mirror and, juggle it on the top of lamp to see what I was doing. In addition. The maid never removed dirty dishes from our room. We would return however we would ask for a more light filled room.

Review 41:Staff was very helpful on dining options and they were fluent in English. The hotel was beautifully quiet which we really liked.

Review 42:The room is very small. But very beautiful :)

Review 43:The hotel is situated in a historical building and is very charming - the walls are done with textile, there is tapestry on the walls in the lobby and beautiful stained glass. The bed is very comfortable and provides perfect sleep. The location is very convenient for seeing the town.

Review 44:The wi-fi was fine in the lobby area, but a bit slow in the room most days during our stay.

Review 45:The staff at the hotel were such nice people! Our daughter had a very early morning flight out of Marseille and the gentleman at the desk made the transportation arrangements for her. We also loved the atmosphere of the old convent. The bed was the most comfortable we experienced during our three week trip in southern France. The location couldn't have been better. We were right in the old town yet also an easy walk to the area around the tourist office. We will stay there again when we are in Aix-en Provence.

Review 46:Position is just a few steps off the city's central avenue and in the middle of the restaurant and shopping area. Ten mins walk from train and bus stations. Would not be so easy by car. Lots of character - converted convent. Our room faced the back and had no view but was very quiet.

Review 47:My room

Review 48:Location

Review 49:Tired 3 star Hotel at best

Review 50:Location made up for the tired interiors and room amenities.

Review 51:A generally pleasant atmosphere, quiet efficient and a nice place to be

Review 52:bathroom was too small

Review 53:lovely hotel, charming and great location

Review 54:Every one was so kind and friendly.

Review 55:Parking charges €25 one day!

Review 56:Beautiful hotel and lovely staff..

Review 57:Bed and pillows

Review 58:The friendly warm staff turned a rainy experience in to a totally charming memory.

Review 59:None. Rooms are a bit outdated.

Review 60:Location is excellent, and quirky lobby

Review 61:Attentive, polite staff; excellent location; small but comfortable room.

Review 62:No parking

Review 63:Good locatin

Review 64:Coolest hotel ever

Review 65:The hotel was a very old building but had been remodeled. It had all the charm but comfortable, updated rooms.

Review 66:Smallish room. Air con unit directly facing the bed so rather draughty when it was on

Review 67:Very friendly reception staff

Review 68:Dirty canopy and poorly maintained terrace in premium room: too expensive.

Review 69:Easy access to centre of town attractions

Review 70:Our hotel was very quiet but in the center of the central district. Everything we wanted to do was steps from the hotel

Review 71:Our curtains fell off the wall which wasn't fixed for 5 hours. A bit inconvenient re access and use of rooms.

Review 72:Nice staff

Review 73:The reception staff were very helpful and the position of the Hotel was perfect. Could not have been better.

Review 74:Air conditioning remotes held at reception Breakfast basic with cramped servery area

Review 75:Location, classic reception area, friendly staff

Review 76:Old walls and heavy furniture give this place the feeling one can expect from a former convent.

Review 77:Location and staff accomodating

Review 78:Our room looked over an open area where staff took smoking breaks in the middle of the night.

Review 79:Location, staff, historic character of building.

Review 80:We've stay here for last 5 years in this beautiful hotel. The location is wonderful.

Review 81:Not much, no wifi on arrival but soon sorted

Review 82:Loved the central location but quietness & the gorgeous interior

Review 83:breakfast expensive

Review 84:very good location nice hotel design quiet and still in the middle of city

Review 85:rooms very sparse and air conditioning not upto the task

Review 86:Location was superb and the first impression of the hotel was good

Review 87:we thought the hotel was not very clean in regards to our room and hallways.

Review 88:the location was perfect for our travels in the area. some of the old features of the hotel were nice to see.

Review 89:A shower curtain or glass shower divide in the bath, would have made a huge difference if one generally wants to have a shower in a old bath

Review 90:We were enchanted with the architectural evidence of the convent past, that used to occupy these rooms. The position to the old town was suberb. Close to all the sights and restaurants, and yet quiet.

Review 91:Room 209 has a bizarre window arrangement and was also very hard to open. It took 3 days to repair a lamp. Hard bed. There may be better rooms.

Review 92:LOCATION. It's really what you're paying for. It's also a lovely lobby with atmosphere and nice people, and my room 209 was quiet.

Review 93:Our room - 108 - had a view of the kitchen door and the air conditioning machinery and was airless and hot even on cool nights. We asked to change but this request was discourteously refused. We were not given the control for the air conditioner in the room and slept very badly. The chief hotel clerk is very bad tempered.

Review 94:The entrance hall was lovely, I liked the old fashioned bathroom.

Review 95:It's a very good 3-star hotel. Nothing to complain about.

Review 96:Very nice staff at the reception, great location, wifi worked out fine. Charming old abbey.

Review 97:The street was noisy during the night - sounded like local tramps getting virulent. Since we had to keep the window open for some cooling air, this was unavoidable. It was only on departure that we noticed the air-conditioning unit above the door. Also, the bars of soap - weeny, in a box clearly meant for something bigger - gave the impression of cheeseparing.

Review 98:The staff were very helpful. The breakfast was worth staying in for - a good variety in pleasant surroundings. The parking, in the new and vast underground carpark at the west end of the Cour Mirabeau, is very reasonable and only a short walk to the hotel.

Review 99:A handyman would be a good idea. A few screws missing on doors here and there and the air conditioning dripped all night. Weak wi-fi reception. These are not good enough reasons to not choose this hotel!

Review 100:Friendly, helpful staff. The terrace was a real bonus. Excellent location. Newspapers available. We will stay here again.

Review 101:The rooms are quite small. We would have appreciated tea/coffee facilities in the room. The spare pillows didn't have covers and we had to request another toilet roll.

Review 102:Location was excellent and some receptionists were very friendly and very helpful.

Review 103:The rooms were a little old and run-down. The bed was not very comfortable.

Review 104:Location was excellent. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good value breakfast.

Review 105:WiFi did not work on the 3rd floor, despite written confirmation on the website and reservation form that it works all around the hotel. That was quite a shocker, as we were looking particularly for the hotel with WiFi. We would have selected another hotel, had we known about this problem before

Review 106:Location, cleanliness, charming historical interior

Review 107:The first room we were shown was gloomy and small despite being a superior one - but they uprated us.

Review 108:right in the centre of Aix en Provence but a very quiet hotel. Wonderful lobby area.

Review 109:Shortage of staff, hideous room decoration, no elevator to upper levels-- we had to carry the baby cot and our luggage ourselves. Outdated and generally dirty looking bathrooms. Even the minibar was unplugged.Overpriced for what it has to offer.

Review 110:Good location , very nice entrance which falsely raises your expectations from the hotel.

Review 111:The room was very small. The shower sprayed all over the bathroom floor and the bathroom counter so there was always water all over place.

Review 112:The staff was great-very friendly and helpful and they spoke English. The location was close to everything!

Review 113:Bathroom a bit tired, slightly dodgy shower. Probably worth getting breakfast in a cafe not the hotel

Review 114:Real atmosphere - you can still see the old monastery. Brilliant combination of central location and very quiet.

Review 115:We had written a note about baby bed but the reception said they did not receive that information and didn't put the bed. The woman at the reception was alone and could not help us immediately. After 10 minutes -which is very quick- she brought the bed and the problem solved. If there was a cabin instead of a curtain in the bathtub, then the water might not have leaked to surface of the bathroom.

Review 116:Nice decoration, central location, good isolation, unique design, comfortable rooms. I think that this hotel may be 4 star instead of 3. 7x24 reception with helpful staff speaking some English to communicate with. We preferred the superior room and were very plesant with it.

Review 117:No ice available . Happy with everything else . Would recommend hotel to friends.

Review 118:Fantastic location. could not get better in Aix. Great water pressure in shower. All staff were very helpful with parking advice & even printed maps for us to travel to nearby towns .

Review 119:A little difficult to access by car especially if you do not know the area. Car parking is public and 10 minutes walk away.

Review 120:Really centrally located. The old convent was beautiful and well presented.

Review 121:Staff attitude. The price charged by the hotel was more than the amount shown on the Booking.com acknowledgement. The hotel tried to make out it was OUR problem not theirs and were extremely ungracious about sorting it out.

Review 122:Excellent location; convenient for getting to all the attractions in Aix on foot.

Review 123:The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was a triple suite which was comfortable and very clean. The lobby is very cozy and quaint, besides being a historical site. The location is perfect for getting to know the city, and there is nearby convenient parking. We would recommend this to all types of travelers.

Review 124:We thought the breakfast was not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel and not good value for money.

Review 125:Great building and location - Friendly and helpful staff. Warm welcome

Review 126:Beautiful little hotel, an old monastery enclosed in the medievalism of old-town Aix. Our room (#208, request it) had a large balcony or deck opening out into a patio that looked like it must have centuries ago. Lovely room, simple and subtle. Staff was warm & helpful, breakfast charming. It's hard to find -- we had to drive up the little one-way street the wrong way just to get to the door -- but once you're there you're right in the middle of things. The price was reasonable, considering.

Review 127:As of April, the hotel is under new ownership, and the staff is not atall as helpful or professional as the previous staff was - verydisappointing. The bed and bathrooms are showing their age, but thehotel will be closed this winter for a total renovation of the rooms soI 'm sure they'll be much more to our liking after that.

Review 128:We've used Hotel des Augustins for several years as a base for ourMusic and Markets Tours, and love the location. The first room shown uswas not at all acceptable, with shabby furnishings and a shower holderthat fell off the wall. The second was more what we have been used to,elegant and pretty furnishings and a well equipped bath.

Review 129:Nothing not to like.

Review 130:Lovely old building and a pleasant room, though it would have been a bit squashed if there's been 2 sleeping there. I was concerned it might be noisy given the central location, but my room was pretty quiet and restful.
