Reviews for Gadds Town House

Review 1:After previously staying at Gadds over the years I now feel like the place has became very tired looking / scruffy and felt as if no pride had been taking when it came to the cleanliness of the room. I think it's time for a refurb.

Review 2:Breakfast is always the best thing at Gadds.

Review 3:The darkness of our room. While the breakfast in the restaurant was very good the evening meal was average to the extent we sought out other restaurants.

Review 4:The location and the friendliness of the staff.

Review 5:Friendly staff with a warm welcome. The food was very well presented, to a high standard and there were some unusual and interesting items on the menu.

Review 6:The hotel was amazing. The themed room was beautiful, couldn't have asked for more. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The location was perfect. We will definitely be paying another visit. Money well spent.

Review 7:Had problem with shower but staff saw to it immediately. Should have been checked before given room.

Review 8:Food was excellent Bed was comfortable Staff could not do enough for you

Review 9:Can't fault the place.

Review 10:The room and facilities were lovely and the hot tub just capped it off. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was amazing.

Review 11:Nothing.

Review 12:The food was excellent, both for breakfast and dinner. The bar staff also did a mean margherita! Also the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.

Review 13:We chose the "bijoux loft" room. Although very nicely fitted out, it was small and had low doorway and a very low beam in the room. Also wifi did not work in this room. Would stay again but not in this room.

Review 14:Excellent restaurant although on one occasion plate and food was not hot and had to be sent back to be heated.

Review 15:Didn't realise no evening meal Sunday had travelled that day landed up going into town awful food in a restaurant sent it back no shops open as late so landed up eating chocs in room You need to make this clear

Review 16:everything Nice staff

Review 17:It's not value for money... At all! The beds are so uncomfortable and the walls are paper thin! Sorry guys!

Review 18:The place in general was nice... Clean, tidy, nice decor...

Review 19:Our room slightly small, but we knew that when we booked it.

Review 20:interesting place with lots to look at, like the quirkiness and slight eccentricity. A fun place to stay.

Review 21:Everything was great . My son would have liked to choose contents of fried breakfast but best scrambled egg we have tasted

Review 22:Staff lovely very friendly .We love the fluffy towels and toiletries provided .great choice of hot drinks and chocolates a really nice touch .

Review 23:Beautifully decorated rooms, very close to the centre of town, very clean, perfect size breakfast, super friendly staff, easy street parking outside, felt very safe

Review 24:The only thing that we did not like was that our visit was over much too soon.

Review 25:we loved everything. the staff were exceptional, doing all they could to make us welcome. Lois, Gemma, Tiffany, Alan, Allen & all the staff whos names we did not get, we wish you all happy days & thank you for making our stay memorable. John & Jolana Kirk. Hove Sussex

Review 26:Whilst there was lots of good choices for breakfast, our food from the cooked menu was a tad cold. Some signs of wear and tear in room. Very thin walls, we could hear everything in next room.

Review 27:The hotel is perfectly located to explore Durham. The staff were very friendly. The room was beautifully finished. We had one of the rooms with a bath which was a real treat, perfect for a romantic break.

Review 28:The room was smaller than I expected from the pictures and did not feel value for money. A little noisy; empty bottles being taken out in the morning and noisy guests in the early hours. Breakfast was ok but very average.

Review 29:The deco was stylish and distinctive and the staff were very helpful and welcoming. Arriving Saturday meant only a few hours of car park had to be paid for, got parked right outside and no real issue to get a space. Accommodated us without fuss for an earlier check in We are a couple between 35-45, and we found it very nice.

Review 30:Small toilet area, dark and dingy areas of the room I.e where you make hot drinks, only 2 tea bags !? not much dressing area for clothes. Or to hang them for that matter.. No food after 3pm on a Sunday .. No staff in the bar area either.?

Review 31:Loved the decor,

Review 32:Our bed was wet on arrival. The hotel then contrived to make a relatively small problem into a catastrophe. We had 4 rooms in the space of 1 day ! When we complained we were made to feel that it was our fault ! This was easily our worst experience in any hotel or B&B.

Review 33:Stayed in the cruise and could here every footstep from the room above which went on until the early hours. Also think the cruise was overpriced

Review 34:Staff were very helpful and friendly also breakfast was delicious

Review 35:Slightly odd water supply during our stay -- hot water came out of both taps. But it added to the charm!

Review 36:A superb location very central to the loveliness that is Durham: easy walks to everywhere, so long as you don't mind hills (hard to avoid in Durham). Quirky rooms with individual charm, and an excellent restaurant. Much to enjoy.

Review 37:Some of the little touches could have been better, top missing of toilet roll holder, metal wrapping around bath shower head had come away from the top attachment, refreshments facilities in the room were good but crMed I to a small corner and would have to move bedside table, bath towel frayed, remedial decorative work, door to bathroom bottom all warped, wallpaper marked

Review 38:Great location small intimate rooms very friendly lively breakfast

Review 39:The outdoor hot tub wasn't clean. The headrests had black mould on them. Also took £50 from my bank to cover any expenses. I didn't spend anything and 2 days later the money is still withheld. Not on when I paid for room in full when booked.

Review 40:Very nice bedroom. Comfortable bed. Clean in room.

Review 41:Nothing!

Review 42:Private hot tub, amazingly comfy bed, having the room away from rest of hotel in a private area. Breakfast was excellent, staff very friendly and polite, cannot fault this place will definitely return.

Review 43:We stayed in the le jardin overall excellent experience and can't wait to book again soon . Ideal romantic getaway in the heart of durham , friendly staff and comfortable accommodation . Hottub with a view what else do you want ?

Review 44:We cannot think of anything to dislike.

Review 45:fantastic location with close proximity to the Durham highlights ,local parking was far better than anticipated. a great hotel bespoke to meet the requirements of the most demanding customer . friendly /competent staff there to please

Review 46:Very dark.

Review 47:Comfortable if somewhat small room. Rich, traditional decor which many people will really like but less appealing to those with a preference for minimalism like ourselves. Excellent location.

Review 48:Nothing all fantastic

Review 49:Fantastic stay been 3 times stayed in Eden lodge, la jarden and bijoux loft, all amazing rooms great value for money, really modern hotel and lovely food!!! Definatley recommend 5 star

Review 50:nothing - everythign was really excellent.

Review 51:Wonderful boutique hotel with a great restaurant. Centrally located with large comfortable rooms filled with stylish furniture. very helpful and professional staff.

Review 52:The room was much smaller than I expected but adequate for an overnight stay. Not sure if te hotel employs a groundsman as the grounds are pretty small but I hate to see plants neglected and dying, weeds growing from every crack and cigarette ends lying about.

Review 53:The bed was very comfortable, bathroom large and extremely clean, hot tub was an experience not to be missed.

Review 54:Everything, for £230 a night stay well away!! Spent £120 on 2 tiny steaks aswell, the place is a joke, never ever recommend to anyone, hottub had mould round, garden furniture was falling to bits, the place is a con

Review 55:Nothing

Review 56:T.V remote control didn't work (suspect the batteries were flat). Couldn't get the wifi password to work (not an issue for our visit)

Review 57:The Edwardian express room was well thought out.

Review 58:Luxurious bedroom with some lovely features. The hotel was walking distance from a delightful city, with great restaurants, bars & shops! The best bit was the staff, attentive & knowledgable combined with a great breakfast.

Review 59:Iron not in room and hairdryer, no doubt could of rang reception however felt theses were simple items that were in room description and should have been readily available.

Review 60:The luxury experience, lovely room, relaxing atmosphere , feeling special

Review 61:The overhead shower didn't work or the tv remote.

Review 62:We stayed in 'The Cruise'. It was aptly named, it gave the impression that you were sailing. It was tasteful and well looked after.

Review 63:The room, that we would rate as 3 star and the only staff running the hotel, was the chief and the receptionist/ server; no management were prescent to deal with problems/ make decisions. We left after 2 nights of our 5 night stay and despite sending a recorded delivered letter of complaint, we have had no response. It looks like we will be taking the matter to the small claims court. Think twice about booking this hotel.

Review 64:The lady who served breakfast was the only asset to the business.

Review 65:Was just a little on the expensive side.

Review 66:Staff were chatty, helpful and accommodating. Always on hand to help and advise. Felt homely. We were shown other rooms whichever you was helpful for later bookings.food was delicious.

Review 67:The staff were very welcoming, courteous and helpful. The food was outstanding, as was the themed room. Would highly recommend and look forward to my next trip

Review 68:I Hooghly the £154 for the cruise room was a little overpriced as it was a small room. But having viewed the other rooms on line I imagine those to be bigger.

Review 69:Food was worthy of the price, great sharing board and well cooked steaks

Review 70:Staff were briefed at each changeover about my food allergy which made it really helpful only having to explain once. Soya milk was provided. The meals were delicious and the quirkily furnished room was a delight. Would recommend it for a couple wanting something a bit special and different for a celebration.

Review 71:The décor of the room (The Cruise) was interesting but a bit dark for such a small room The bath was lovely to look at but difficult to get in and out of and the location of the taps meant hot water burnt your leg if you were topping the water up The non slip mat was very dirty underneath I found the previous occupant's hairs on the floor

Review 72:The staff and the location

Review 73:The beds had not been changed and had hairs and stains on the sheets. The tea and coffe had not been refreshed and the towels were dirty. the staff weren't helpful just apologised and we had to argue for a new room.

Review 74:Very comfortable quiet room and spotlessly clean. No noise from the street or in the rest of the building. The breakfast was delicious with excellent quality ingredients. Staff were very friendly and helpful. 5 stars!

Review 75:The shower curtain in the Edwardian Express room bathroom was not longer enough, thus allowing shower water to run onto the bathroom floor, making it a hazard.

Review 76:The staff and the food

Review 77:Hot tub had an earring and a glass at the bottom of it Room had no bath £295 for one night very pricy

Review 78:Stayed in garden lodge was our second time stayin here liked the fact the hot tub was under a roof as was spitting

Review 79:The way other guest spoke to staff members. Obviously that's not the hotel fault but i did feel bad for hotel staff. I loved spending the night at thag hotel and would go again.

Review 80:Could no fault anything. Staff for friendly and helpful.

Review 81:Stayed in bijoux loft and there was mould in corner of shower as well as the rusty soap tray. The bathroom had a strong smell of urine too. We expected more considering the price!

Review 82:Friendly staff and breakfast was lovely! Really comfortable bed

Review 83:Small thing - light switch very fiddly and lights a bit disappointing.

Review 84:My room was done out in imitation of an Edwardian railway suite. It was very well done - great bed, admirable bath. Would definitely stay again if I could get the discounted rate.

Review 85:We Booked through booking.com on a credit card and weren't made fully aware of the fact the room charge hadn't been taken, so we were shocked when on leaving we had to pay for our room. Think this could if been made more clear.

Review 86:The food and the room.

Review 87:We stayed in the express LNER themed room. It was well planned and indeed quirky. However one of the bedside lights did not work so and we were supplied with a lamp. The wardrobe door was also suffering from a problem and we could only be sure of opening it by wedging it shut with a piece of paper. Overall even with the lamp provided by a very helpful member of staff, the room was very gloomy. These were minor niggles in an otherwise lovely hotel and we would return on another occasion.

Review 88:super location. Excellent food and very helpful staff.

Review 89:The TV was too complicated and couldn't turn it on. There was no hot water in the morning and had to call the janitor.

Review 90:Set perfectly in the Classy outskirts of Durham. All rooms extremely smart and classy.

Review 91:Toilet flush was tricky( but we did not complain.) Bathroom a little cramped but gorgeous!) Duty manager?... on Fri evening seemed to be having to try and do everything, from training the bar staff to booking us in, to running back and forth to dining room for Ice for the bar, changing a beer barrel, to showing us to our room. Talk about multi tasking!

Review 92:The decor is completely fabulous, our particularroom was like stepping into Victorian times! Loved the roll top bath in the bedroom, and glass shower cubicle! Great bar and glamorous local clientele, buzzy atmosphere on Friday night. Gorgeous, cozy Dining room. Menu looked good, wish we had eaten dinner there! Breakfast service excellent in all respects, with friendly staff and delicious breakfast, great service. We will return without a doubt. So much better than any of the other three hotel we have stayed in while in Durham.

Review 93:The comfy bed, very stylish bathroom an the fabulous hot tub.

Review 94:We stayed in the le jardin room. It was very tastefully done out with little extras included such as wine an chocolates. The room was made so much more appealing with the fab private hot tub. Well worth a dip.

Review 95:The customer service skills of the staff was brilliant. The rooms are beautiful and the food was top notch. Thanks again. Next time il have to try one of the lodges :)

Review 96:The room was a little on the warm side even with the aircon at its lowest.

Review 97:My girlfriend and I visited for the night and found the staff very friendly and efficient, the decor beautiful and location fantastic. Breakfast was delicious too !

Review 98:shower not working. boyfriend got parking ticket as was not told to move car for camera men. light in hot tub loose. would not stay here again. could not book restuarant 4 dinner no spaces as we were told people outside book so we had to go out but linda got us a taxi bless her.

Review 99:linda very helpful.

Review 100:It's like a scene out of the Time Machine with Rod Taylor you expect his Time Machine to land in the back garden while you are having breakfast. Great place

Review 101:One tiny criticism. A couple of times the lovely staff weren't where they should have been due to multiple duties.

Review 102:Really sumptuous décor. Lots of individual unusual style. Delicious, high-quality breakfast. Very quiet location.

Review 103:Staff at check-in were less than welcoming, actually felt like we were annoying them or interrupting their time. Fortunately the breakfast staff and a lovely breakfast made up for the night before. Due to confusion from the check-in staff to the check-out staff, still trying to sort out the room charges - four items appear on my credit card.

Review 104:The room was outstanding! The four poster king canopy bed was so comfortable and just what we needed after a day's travels/sightseeing. Wine to our room, a hot bath in the roll top tub in our room made everything extra special.

Review 105:Really poor breakfast. Having stayed here twice before disappointed to find no continental option but bacon like old leather, hard fried egg yolk and a very dodgy sausage! Fruit okay if you want to peel an orange or mango!

Review 106:Excellent, good value evening meal. Great staff and atmosphere.

Review 107:Looks lovely on the surface ! They obviously had the right idea at the beginning. The room was tatty, loo seat broken, huge walk in shower and shower head but no pressure, smelt damp and had black mould. dressing gowns seen better days. Dusty coffee cups and the tea chest/trunk scruffy, smelly and fit for bin. Shag pile (germ collector) grubby rug (rugs r awful and should never b found in hotel rooms)!! The blinds on the doors and windows need replacing.

Review 108:Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't serving food the evening we stayed. However the breakfast was very delicious. Location is fab.

Review 109:We stayed in the Ruby room, and loved it! Lovely location close to the river. We enjoyed the restaurants and the sites in Durham. We went for a morning walk and jog along the river and then had breakfast in the hotel - best croissant I've ever had!!

Review 110:Location cleanliness food and staff all a credit to get be hotel . Loved the themed rooms something a bit different from the normal .good value for money

Review 111:Only downside was the pillows were not the most comfortable, the shower rail in the bathroom was pretty rusty and it became apparent that the thin walls enabled you to hear every word of fellow guests conversations which woke us up in the morning.

Review 112:We arrived in Durham for the University Open Day and received a warm welcome from the staff who were very attentive. My daughter and I enjoyed a delicious meal in the restaurant of fillet steak and the vegetarian tagine. The breakfast of eggs benedict was fantastic and a great way to start a day of University trekking.Chocolates in the bedroom were a nice finishing touch.

Review 113:There is very little soundproofing between the rooms and we had a very loud oriental couple next to us who managed to keep us awake 'til 3 in the morning.

Review 114:The staff were very friendly and couldn't be faulted in any way.

Review 115:Excellent. All I would change is the background music.

Review 116:Excellent hotel. Been wanting to stay for ages and were not disappointed. Lots of nice little touches.

Review 117:I stayed in the loft suite and it was beautifully decorated and it had the comfiest bed i've ever slept in. The breakfast was always lovely. The hotel waa right in the centre easy to get to the shops and the cathedral. I Definately recommend staying here if you go to durham for the night.

Review 118:No car park, so had to pay to use public parking. Found some at 60p an hour.

Review 119:A quirky hotel with interesting decor and friendly staff. Great location for exploring Durham

Review 120:We ate at the restaurant on our first evening. The starters and mains were good but the creme brulee's were the worst we have ever tasted. Bizarrely they served our first course with the cocktails. I am gluten intolerant and notified the hotel when I booked. For breakfast I requested eggs benedict with gluten free toast. I was served poached eggs. As I found from the reaction the toast was not gluten free. Avoid this restaurant! The decor is interesting but getting past its best. Simple things like toilet roll holders are left broken. It is a great location but the hotel is no longer run well and you can do better.

Review 121:Great location for exploring the historic centre.

Review 122:Stylish room which was extremely comfortable. The staff could not do enough to help and made sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast was very, very good. We will definitely go back

Review 123:The only critism I would have is that we would have liked to have been able to check in slightly earlier, but no big deal. Also, if staying here, bring plenty of £1.00 coins for parking.

Review 124:Hotel very quirky and original through out all public areas, whilst having a cosy and homely feel. Our room, the Express, was very well thought out with great attention to detail. Staff and owner very friendly and welcoming. We had a fantastic stay, would and will definitely stay again.

Review 125:Staff at breakfast inexperienced !!! A smile here and there too would have made a difference. A better hair dryer in the room ...

Review 126:Excellent central accommodation .. Beautiful room .. Lovely extras ... Fantastic sole use of hot tub... Beautiful bathroom and amazing power shower. Comfortable bed with quality clean bedding .. Excellent food and drinks ..

Review 127:Chips not quite triple cooked..they were attentive in dealing with it

Review 128:So friendly and helpful .. Staying on my own.. They allowed a friend to join me for breakfast with no notice .. Kindly didn't charge .. Super staff.. Amazing location.. Steak was fab ..

Review 129:The only problem is the parking, having to feed the parking meter but it's clear on the booking form that this is the case, so it was expected.

Review 130:Each room had a theme which we liked. The breakfasts were very good with lots of choice. Didn't have an evening meal at the hotel but the menu seemed good.

Review 131:Only slight negative is that although the terrace for the hot tub is a private terrace it is overlooked by 3 windows so it is not entirely private

Review 132:Gorgeous hotel in a great location, room was fantastic & staff were very pleasant. Would definitely stay again/recommend.

Review 133:One of the receptionists was extremely welcoming and very helpful( don't know her name but she has a relative in Morpeth).Food good and reasonably priced.Great decor with themed rooms-a breath of fresh air from the bland ,corporate look of so many chain hotels now.
