Reviews for Black Lion Hotel Richmond North Yorkshire
Review 1:Wi-Fi was difficult to get and thought the bar prices slightly above what we would expect. Also we were looking forward to snuggling up in the snug but it was booked both nights so shame we didn't to enjoy that.
Review 2:Friendly staff and locals who drank in the bar. Clean and comfortable rooms. On site parking and a great location. Breakfasts were able, fresh and satisfying.
Review 3:Nothing terrible but breakfast finished early (9.30am if I recall correctly) and internet weak in our room no 7 but good in public areas.
Review 4:Really well situated with a carpark, walking distance to all the sites. Lovely breakfast in their lovely bistro restaurant and very friendly staff. Very clean room, newly decorated with nice bedding and great towels. Take dogs, which is great. Tea, Coffee & biscuits in the room. Would stay there again.
Review 5:Absolutely nothing, no complaints whatsoever
Review 6:Knowledgable, helpful and friendly staff. Clean comfortable rooms and excellent, locally produced, breakfast. Ideal location in centre of town, rooms at rear away from bar and road noise. Free car parking on site. An excellent stay, will use again.
Review 7:Didnt like room 11 where i stayed as thier was no on suite bathroom it was across the hallway, i think it was expensive at £120 a night for what you got its more of a b&b than a hotel, didnt like the fact you had to check in at the bar while people were drinking there it should have a seperate area for checking in this put me off straight away, fix these issues and it would be a great place to stay, dont think i would stay here again as ive stayed in better places in richmond for less
Review 8:Honest genuine people nice place to be
Review 9:Stayed another night somewhere else for £40 cheaper which was just as nice. Couldn't justify the extra cost, so won't be returning
Review 10:The breakfast was very nice, location was right in the centre. Enjoyed our stay
Review 11:Just the stairs, which I struggle with, however I was given a room with fewer stairs than I could have had - still a bit of a struggle for me.
Review 12:Location, parking, convenience.
Review 13:Wish we could have stayed longer ?
Review 14:Very old quirky building. Warm and comfortable. Lovely staff and very good food. Excellent breakfast included in the price.
Review 15:missed food service due to delays in traffic 9.15pm arrival food ended at 9pm so had to find a takeaway and eat in the bar (consolation was the pizza was lovely (jacobs) ) poor heating, tired decor in need of updating, very small master bed,1 small bathroom between 4 ok for us as a family but def not suitable for group of friends as bathroom in main bedroom. Fortunately we were only staying 1 night.
Review 16:the space we had over 2 rooms fresh clean towels and bedding, staff friendly,
Review 17:Would've liked more coffee and milk in room. No internet in room (not a major problem though)
Review 18:Staff were lovely very friendly. Breakfast was fantastic
Review 19:We had no soap or shampoo in the bathroom, we informed the young girl behind the bar but only got a shrug of the shoulders. We had to buy some frome the supermarket.
Review 20:The location was great good food and atmosphere
Review 21:Nice Food, Friendly and helpful staff all that was needed for a weekend. Travelled with group of 8 all young couples for a wedding. Great Location near shops and bars
Review 22:The bathroom across the corridor, and i requested a gluten free breakfast, which was lovely, but i think you could have got some bread to make some toast.. a little thing, but would have meant alot to us..
Review 23:The location, the bar and restaurant. And the free car oat..was a nice friendly place. .
Review 24:Room very small for a double, bed sloping to one side, shower in need of attention. Poor choice of food for vegetarians.
Review 25:Central location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice to see people with their dogs made welcome in the bar area.
Review 26:With the exception of the lady serving at the bar who checked us in and was friendly and welcoming, the other staff members seemed rather aloof and indifferent. At breakfast time we were barely acknowledged, no plates were cleared after we had finished eating each course and we left both the breakfast room and the hotel without a word from any staff member, not even to check out as a key drop box was used.
Review 27:Good central loacation in an interesting old town. Room felt as if it had been recently redecorated and was well presented and comfortable.
Review 28:Very long wait for meal in the evening. Just hope this was a 'one off'.
Review 29:Excellent bed and duvet. Free car parking. Friendly, comfortable bar. Great breakfasts.
Review 30:Heater was controlled somehow, I couldn't turn it on or off. It was on around 5PM and off around 8PM! I felt very cold at night and early in the morning.
Review 31:very close to the market place and bus stop nice cosy room breakfast served well
Review 32:Housekeeping could have done a much better job with ensuring towels were replaced and that soap and small items that one doesn't usually travel with.
Review 33:Breakfast. Incredible
Review 34:Service very slow, mistakes in orders, made excuse for producing well done steaks instead of rare. Food not good. Room cold and dark.
Review 35:Location, parking, general friendliness
Review 36:Bathroom was disgusting with a toilet which leaked all over the floor every time it was flushed. We flagged this to the manager on the first evening and got no response. Left the bathroom feeling really dirty and with a terrible pub toilet smell! This was room 8. I would never stay here again it was really off putting.
Review 37:Good location and nice little pub downstairs.
Review 38:Breakfast wasn't great this time around.
Review 39:Nice hotel with character and friendly staff in lovely location. Was on 2nd floor which has bigger rooms, rather than smaller rooms on the top floor.
Review 40:No bad experience, but felt the hotel could do with an update. The stairs to rooms 10,11 and others on that floor, could do with a handrail, it felt unsafe on those stairs.
Review 41:The friendly staff, and good food.
Review 42:Barely warm shower, lumpy bed and 45 steps, some very steep and narrow leading to the top room. No exit from the front door before 11.00am. The food was low quality.
Review 43:The location of hotel, parking and the breakfast served.
Review 44:Smelt of food even though it was over a pub it was stale food. No smiles from staff checking us in. Dirty paintwork were a painting was missing on wall, on wall had a patchy repaint in red. Black grout around shower screen over the bath.
Review 45:Location, check in early. Comfy bed & nice towels.
Review 46:Table booked for dinner at 19-15, our food actually arrived 2 hours later, many people left the restaurant prior to receiving the food, we felt very sorry for the front line staff
Review 47:More choices of local beer.
Review 48:Perfect location as it is very close to the market place. The evening meal was very well cooked, my lamb chops with mint sauce was just the best I have ever eaten.
Review 49:Only one member of staff in dining room. On the first day gave up waiting after 20 minutes when I hadn't even been offered tea or coffee as there were people who had been there longer than me still waiting to place order. On second morning had to ask to have my order taken
Review 50:Fabulous location with friendly reception staff. Room large and very quiet
Review 51:Fawlty towers experience at breakfast, bathroom separate from room. This is happening all the time with booking .com the rooms are always the worst in the establishment UK 4 star is Aussie 3 and sometimes 2 star
Review 52:Good location, good dinner ,value and good food
Review 53:Room was very small & cramped for price (£90). Only supplied with 1small shampoo & shower gel for 2 people. No WIFI cover at all in room contrary to advert.
Review 54:Good location - very central. Comfortable bed. Staff pleasant. Good restaurant.
Review 55:Parking limited so we had to pay to park in a local car park.
Review 56:Excellent dog friendly hotel in a great Central location. Staff were very helpful. Would certainly stay here again.
Review 57:The room was very small for two people with luggage, really only big enough for one. A wardrobe in the corner which opened into the wall. I struggled and failed to locate any Wifi.
Review 58:Right in the town centre, comfortable bed. Very pleasant staff. Good breakfast, if rather slow arriving.
Review 59:Noise/disturbance from the street during Saturday night. Bar areas drab Limited parking.
Review 60:Good breakfast. Helpful staff. Comfortable beds in twin room.
Review 61:We had booked two twin rooms, but they only had a double bed room with two twins when we arrived.n it didn't really matter as we are all good friends, but it would have been nice to have had our original booking.
Review 62:Beds very comfortable, room well appointed . Bathroom well equipped food generally very good - the Thai curry was too hot to eat though. Staff very friendly and service excellent.
Review 63:nothing
Review 64:excellent location right in the heart of everything, the hotel was fabulous with loads of history , and the food was excellent, we will be going back in the near future
Review 65:We were neglected by the breakfast staff on our last day. Orders were taken from two groups who came in after us - we had to ask eventually. We realise the member of staff was new and was training,
Review 66:Good location very close to the centre of a nice town. A very old hotel but well decorated and appointed. Friendly staff. Good price.
Review 67:I stayed here recently whilst doing the C2C walk, I stayed in room 11 so my rating is not good because bathroom is separate to bedroom. Breakfast finishes at 9 and think it should continue until 10, I arrived at the hotel said I had a room booked and the first thing the guy said to me was you need to pay now, charming!.
Review 68:Silicone around bathroom needed replacing, carpet in room needed a shampoo.
Review 69:Excellent service from all staff, good central location with private parking, comfortable room with all necessary facilities.
Review 70:The water to the wash basin was scalding hot. A blender valve is needed to ensure water is supplied at 43`C. The weather was very hot so the window needed to be open. The sash window had only one sash cord. Only the lower, very heavy window could be opened and had to be wedged open. The refrigeration unit made a humming noise during the night, necessitating the use of ear plugs. The single room was very small.
Review 71:The manager was attentive and did his best to sort out problems. One of the breakfast waitresses was particularly cheerful, pleasant and customer orientated.
Review 72:Steep steps up to the room (if less fit) uneven floor so things slid off the bedside table if not prepared. Glass shelf above sink in bathroom not level so concerned that the glass tumblers might fall into the sink. We wanted to re-use towels but no heated towel rail for drying them out properly. Mattress a little hard for our taste
Review 73:Good location, liked the pub atmosphere, real ales and excellent evening menu. Staff very friendly, particularly the lady housekeeper for whom nothing was too much problem. Good to have a car park. Blanket instead of duvet supplied as requested (even though 2 singles rather than 1 double ) Other - because it is an inn rather than a hotel there is no reception or obvious manager. This meant we had to pay for food and drinks as consumed rather than having them on a tab - but this prevented us leaving without settling up first
Review 74:The water for my bath wasn't warm enough! They did not restock shower/bath gel! Had to use the soap. Even the TV doesn't give you all the basic 5 channels.
Review 75:Friendly staff.
Review 76:Our room was high up (room 12) and the stairs are not for people unsteady on their feet or not able bodied. Noisy lorry unloading in the morning around 7.30am. We were up anyway but noisy anyway - not the hotels fault.
Review 77:Staff were great. Rooms spotless. Food tasty. Free parking at rear.
Review 78:The food was good but the helpings were enormous and we couldn't finish the main courses. Suggest offering smaller portions for those whose appetites smaller
Review 79:Very friendly staff, and a nice homely atmosphere
Review 80:Supper was disappointing - very average fish and chips when compared to what we'd experienced in Whitby and elsewhere in Yorkshire.
Review 81:The location just off the market square is excellent. Our room number 11 was very quiet. It did not have an en-suite but had its own private bathroom (across the corridor) which was a decent size with a good bath as well as shower.
Review 82:Mattress felt tired and sagged in middle. We were right up on top level. Ceilings going up and down stairs a hazard to anyone over medium height. Room felt stuffy even though weather was anything but warm. Would be unbearable on a hot day as no air con. Could not work out how to operate the shower, but that may be our fault.
Review 83:Location right in centre. Good food and wide choice both for evening meal and in particular breakfast.
Review 84:Thick bacon with too much fat and not well enough grilled at breakfast. Perhaps should have asked for it to be crispy! Curry on dinner menu fairly ordinary but 'adequate'.
Review 85:Central position and comfortable room. Breakfast menu good. Good atmosphere in the 'pub'.Old
Review 86:Staff serving breakfast would benefit from a little more cheeriness, it's nice to start the day with a smile & warm greeting. This was rather lacking, however the girl was only young :)
Review 87:Staff were welcoming & sociable. Bedroom & bathroom were clean & comfortable. Good having parking space behind hotel.
Review 88:Noise from pet shop opposite talking loud when setting up in the mornings. .very noisey...
Review 89:Nice friendly hotel....lovely food that is always served red hot..hotel is in a perfect location..bit noise from pet store Opposite when They Are Setting Up In The Morning. ..apart from that all was good
Review 90:For the able bodied only, particularly room 8 and above
Review 91:Location is good, given 24 hour access, not noisy despite the location, food pleasant locals amusing, the layout is hilarious but not difficult to negotiate, - for the able bodied only, water pressure good at the top of the building and hot water plentiful
Review 92:Only thing I didn't like was where the room was we had to go up too many steps and my partner just getting over cancer
Review 93:The Black Lion Hotel is located in a perfect place just off the town square easy access from both front and back doors,we arrived earlier than expected and the staff were lovely and booked us in right away definitely would stay here again staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 94:Needs a new shower curtain, that's all.
Review 95:The hotel is superbly located just seconds from the town square, private parking is available. Food is excellent, there is a good choice from the "early bird" menu if required. Hearty breakfast served in the cosy restaurant. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly, attentive staff. Our family room was spacious, clean, and quiet with a lovely comfy bed. Excellent.
Review 96:Not the cheapest.........
Review 97:If you like square, predicatable international hotels, this isn't the place for you. But if you like every room to be different, comfortable and to have good food and drink, stay here.. The corridors wind on, betraying hundreds of years of additions and the floors creak but you know these are proper floorboards, not chipboard
Review 98:Didn't like the kitchenette in th llounge area of our accomodation did not spoil our stay though.
Review 99:Staff great went out of their way to help even provided a fillet steak not on the menu for my husband.
Review 100:Slightly tired room and bathroom. Could do with a bit of a revamp/facelift.
Review 101:Cosy room, on site parking, wifi and good breakfast. Good value for money in the heart of Richmond.
Review 102:We paid for a flat, however there was no crockery, plates or cooking utensils. The fridge was not in good condition. The door was falling off the wardrobe and was so close to the bed that I had to shuffle back and forward to get anything out of it. The ceiling outside the bedroom obviously suffers from water damage from above and is still wet. The ceiling in the lounge area are bowed and cracked and not in good repair. Definitely not value for money.
Review 103:The location
Review 104:Very friendly and good situation for overnight stay. Apparently new owners who have made new updates and recent decorations which are very good are very good. Food excellent
Review 105:the bed was so uncomfortable & didn't realise when we booked that the bathroom was seperate from room with only a shower head & bath. Couldn't take a shower
Review 106:breakfast was lovely
Review 107:Unable to have a shower as shower tray filled to brim when turned on and would have flooded bathroom if used.Room very cramped as my mother would say "No room to swing a cat".
Review 108:breakfast
Review 109:Steak night I could not get a bottle of white wine as they had run out unless I paid extra Either order more in for the occasion or give up another bottle don't ask customers to pay more
Review 110:Nice cozy bar good friendly staff
Review 111:Minor issue only, couldn't get coffee right after dinner, A little odd as rest of meal was great, possibly problem with Coffee machine?
Review 112:Small friendly character hotel. Lovely food, including breakfast.
Review 113:Quiet unfussy hotel. Comfortable and clean. Unpretentious yet of a good standard. Bright white tablecloths for dining. Large fluffy towels in the bathroom. Good beer behind the bar!
Review 114:The building is very old which I suppose has its own charm. The rooms were not what I expected for the price, our 'upgraded' room had the bathroom across the corridor and the beds were old fashioned and wobbled, and double not queen sized
Review 115:Nice bathroom. great location, and food was excellent
Review 116:Bed was a bit lumpy.....
Review 117:The attention to detail in the cleanliness and decoration was impressive. Good bar and restaurant. Great location in the centre of Richmond with parking available at the hotel
Review 118:Recent new management - some parts of hotel in process of 'makeover' - including our room which was a bit 'tired'.
Review 119:Location, historic interesting building, food, drink, staff.
Review 120:Couldn't connect to WiFi. Although food was lovely the evening meal was not as hot as it should have been but it wouldn't stop me from eating there again. The bar/restaurant area was lovely and cosy with a very friendly welcome.
Review 121:Excellent location, room was spacious & spotless. Staff were first class.
Review 122:The price of the drink bought one vodka and a half a larger over 8 pounds. I have drank in London for less. But other than that it was great and there were plenty more local bars with better prices but it wouldn't stop me staying again. And the 10 30 check out time of the room is a bit early
Review 123:The hotel was clean and tidy the staff very helpful. The old building just wants the bedrooms upgrading. The hotel is in a excellent position to explore Richmond
Review 124:Street noise on Friday night kept us awake until 3am. Apparently Saturday is even worse :-(
Review 125:Very friendly staff; clean; all the comforts you could require. Convenient parking. Our dog loved being fussed over.
Review 126:Room was too warm for me at first but was fine after I switched off the radiator. Pub is on one way street. Directions to rear car-park would be useful for arrival.
Review 127:Central location. Helpful staff. Quiet room. Single room with en-suite bathroom. Yorkshire cooked breakfast with excellent sausages. Car park at rear. Cask ale.
Review 128:My only issue was not being able to park the car at the hotel as the tiny car park was full. We had to park in a disc controlled area and walk to the hotel.
Review 129:We stayed on New Year's Eve - visiting friends nearby. I was amazed at what a good night's sleep we all got. The rooms were warm, welcoming and very comfortable.
Review 130:Slight damp smell in bathroom
Review 131:Staff very friendly and helpful Food was first class, they were extremely efficient at accommodating a party of 9 at very short notice. Very impressed considering the time of year. Breakfast excellent and presented in an imaginative way. The hotel is in the heart of Richmond and is full of character. I think this hotel represents really good value for money and we would all recommend it.
Review 132:wi-fi did not seem to work in our bedroom... but I did not ask for assistance as we were only their for one night
Review 133:Position in town - central but quiet and attractive location
Review 134:Room was small as was bed which was also well used. Given this we considered the room overpriced. Breakfast service was slow as one person was cooking/waiting on 12 people
Review 135:Warm and welcoming country town hotel downstairs with willing pleasant staff Breakfast was well cooked and tasty.
Review 136:We initially were given a room in which the heating (7th November) was not working. When we asked for heating we were moved to a slightly bigger room, which was fine.
Review 137:Staff very friendly. Beds very comfortable Cooked breakfast a real treat.
Review 138:Lots of stairs up to rooms- this not a negative for us as added to the atmosphere of the place.
Review 139:Food excellent- cooked breakfast to order. Ate in restaurant both nights of our stay. Staff friendly. Good location just off town market place. Nice feel to the property. Family room spacious with one double and 2 proper single beds for the kids.
Review 140:No hot water on one morning only luke warm, but don't let that put you off the Hotel
Review 141:Food very good, The Breakfast, is the best we'e had at any Hotel, all fresh food. Rooms very clean
Review 142:The only thing we didn't like was that there was an absolutely awful odour in the ladies toilet down near the bar. My partner said the Mens toilet was fine though. I advised a member of staff who apologised & said they'd have a look into it. It still smelt awful the next day but we had no other issues at all.
Review 143:The hotel was wonderful, we loved the location in particular. We will be happy to recommend you to friends/family & come again ourselves.
