Reviews for Bowburn Hall Hotel
Review 1:The room I was in was right next to a fire door and each time someone went through it banged really loudly which went on till early hours of the morning and started again at the crack of dawn. Worst hotel night sleep ever.
Review 2:The location
Review 3:Friendly, efficient staff, lovely room and stylish bathroom. All beautifully clean and comfortable. Lovely food - fresh and plentiful. Spacious car parking.
Review 4:My room was quite close to a meeting room which was full of quite loud people. This did not bother me as I was working late but if you needed an early night then I think this would have hindered you a little
Review 5:Staff are really friendly and polite could not do enough for you. Food is really nice especially the Ginger Sponge . Room was a nice size with comfy bed , very clean and tidy. Would stay here again next time I am in the area
Review 6:We have stayed overnight on a few occasions. We have done this, rather than travel, following a great night of entertainment at the hall. It's a nice traditional hotel, staff very welcoming our room was clean and pleasant.
Review 7:Staff member seemed to have her friends in the bar area playing cards. I could hear them below my room but it did go quiet after 11-15 which was ok
Review 8:Rooms were good although maybe a bit pricey
Review 9:People said it was in middle of housing estate it's not really think people just need to complain about something room was warm cosy and clean food was excellent as was service nice big car park nice relaxing pub offering sky sports great breakfast and nice safe garden for families with young children
Review 10:Friendly staff who were interested to hear what the hotel looked like 35 years ago as I to live in the village and actually worked at the Hall for a while
Review 11:TV wouldn't work and had to stand on a chair to reach the switch, table light didn't work. Bed tiny for two and Rock hard
Review 12:Good location, friendly staff
Review 13:Was the season to Christmas Party . Did not bother me too much but if you need your beauty sleep don't go here over Christmas as the music is loud and on till late. I actually quite enjoyed it as it was 80s themed.
Review 14:Staff could not do enough for you food was tasty. Room was really clean and comfy. Lovely atmosphere and hotel. Will definitely return.
Review 15:Hotel suggests it is a country hotel. It is the middle of a housing estate. Showers were cold or boiling hot. Even though opposite end of hotel could hear thudding music of evening event.
Review 16:lounge area
Review 17:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, everything was excellent including the food. My only slight complaint was the room was on the small size but apart from that was very clean and comfortable. Will definitely be staying there again.
Review 18:Need to check if a wedding is taking place before booking. The disco was very noisy with equally noisy guests returning from the party into the adjacent room and arguing, with slamming doors featured!
Review 19:The staff were very good and helpful. The hotel itself was in good decorative order with a pleasing conservatory for dining.
Review 20:Booking.com's rate didn't include breakfast - so I would have got a better deal booking direct.
Review 21:Out of town hotel with large car park. Happy to allow me to park overnight with a trailer. Small single room, but perfectly adequate. Modern shower room.
Review 22:Problem with drainage in our bathroom which smelt damp. Little pressure of water for showering.
Review 23:Convenient to motorway. Nice evening menu with friendly staff. A lovely building with a nice garden.
Review 24:Horrible place to stay if one expects quiet. We were there on a Sunday night, and very loud music from the bar went on until 11:00 p.m. And just as bad, our bath fan was suppose to shut off after a few minutes, after light goes off, and it stayed on the entire night.
Review 25:The girls who worked there-- Lucy and Ashleigh were the best.
Review 26:The restaurant needs a thorough clean. The decor is lovely but tables were sticky, crockery dirty and everywhere was covered in dust...it looks super until you sit down and have to touch anything! Food very average.
Review 27:Location looks odd as you travel through a housing estate but the hotel has a decent car park and was not affected by the proximity of local housing or traffic. Room was clean and adequate.
Review 28:Has no lift so carrying heavy cases up the stairs can be a challenge if yu are older
Review 29:Very well presented Hotel with excellent furnishings. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent, and staff were very helpful
Review 30:Very disappointed that I was not warned about a disco running until midnight when I booked. Was going to stay two nights but booked out after one as couldn't sleep until after midnight despite wanting to sleep from 10pm. I mentioned that I hadn't slept well to the person at the desk and I wanted to check out and no apology or comment! Not impressed.
Review 31:On the whole friendly staff and room clean.
Review 32:Somehow this time things did not seem up to the previous standards set :-( The welcome was not there, the service was a bit haphazard and the steak was not as good as before - as an experience it left me thinking what " Oh used to be! "
Review 33:I have always loved this hotel for it's friendly staff, warm welcome and comfortable surroundings.
Review 34:There was a wedding party in and we had no where to escape from the hustle and bustle. A small lounge for residents would have been perfect .
Review 35:A lovely hotel was impressed when we arrived.
Review 36:I stood and waited five minutes for my room key whilst the member of staff on reception desk continued on with a telephone conversation although aware of me waiting. The room was adequate but of a lower standard than other 3* hotels that I have stayed at. Food was adequate. Overall everything was a little overpriced for the quality standard.
Review 37:The close proximity to Durham was beneficial. The conservatory restaurant overlooking the nice garden was enjoyable.
Review 38:Bit noisy. Due to wedding reception, we were promised it would cease at 12pm and it did, no trouble after that.
Review 39:Great place, overnight stay would use again.
Review 40:Hoped for quiet night away but found wedding party had the conservatory and took over the bar area, really noisy until 01.30-02.00am as bedroom was adjacent to car park, little sleep.
Review 41:Nice hotel though, friendly and helpful staff and good food. Room was very comfy and bed was great.
Review 42:the fact that i thought i was paying £71 for each of the 2 rooms booked but they charged me £71 and £87 Staff quite rude about it when questioned We had an evening meal which was very sub standard but the breakfast was ok
Review 43:very nice location with nice gardens Very helpful with request for early breakfast
Review 44:The stairs to the top floor. The shower curtain which encloses you and sticks to your body when showering.
Review 45:The amount of space in the room. The size of the bathroom.
Review 46:staff unhelpful, more interested in Sunday lunch crowd than hotel guests. Whole hotel including rooms smelt of cooking. Breakfast I had to go to reception to get someone to take our order. Fire escape almost totally blocked with bags of laundry and door wedged open!
Review 47:Room was reasonably spacious and very clean
Review 48:we loved it all!!
Review 49:we loved the gardens and the conservatory where we enjoyed an excellent meal served by friendly efficient staff. our room was lovely too (room 11) it was nice and quiet with a comfortable bed and a clean, fresh bathroom
Review 50:Didn't know there was a wedding on which went on to around 1 ish .Some of the guests nearly fighting in the car park .talking outside around 3 ish .window didn't close properly so couldn't sleep
Review 51:Place was lovley meals looked nice
Review 52:nothing really, but we had to wait quite a while to find a member f staff to check us out. Nicely decorated
Review 53:Nicely decorated. Excellent food.Nice grounds.
Review 54:Not a bad experience , but I don't like time limits on breakfast on a weekend. Being 10 - 15 minutes outside stated breakfast time ( yes, my fault, overslept) should not deny me a cooked breakfast , particularly as I would have been paying for it.
Review 55:Efficient and friendly staff. Very clean and comfortable room.
Review 56:The pictures of the hotel were deceiving. It was not in the country as it appeared. The wifi connection was terrible for a hotel these days. Understaffed.
Review 57:It was off the beaten tourist track
Review 58:Rooms were a little dated & toilet door was plain glass so could see through from the bed, only criticism really
Review 59:Warm, clean room. Staff were lovely and very accomadating, fairly good location into durham centre
Review 60:It is a fairly basic wedding venue and noisy in the evening. Room was draughty, tired and could have been cleaner. The only food we ate here was toast, "butter" and jam but even that wasn't good.
Review 61:The staff were very friendly and happy to help.
Review 62:The room was tiny for a double, right next door to conference room, were a birthday party was going on, the door to this room banged every time someone entered or left, constant banging and noise. The room at first glance was very tired, needed wallpaper fixed in areas and the wooden chair back is broken. In the toilet the extractor for the shower is blocked with thick dust (years of none cleaning) and the glass door needs a good scrub. Water from hand basin very very hot and in shower cold. Overall tired accommodation and in need of a good scrub maybe by someone who takes pride in their abilities to house-keep. Could do better. .
Review 63:The staff were great always a smile and a genuine How was your day!. We booked with breakfast and I must saw it was the best fry up we have had for a long time. Only ate in one evening nd the food was excellent.
Review 64:This a good hotel, with good staff and overall I was very pleased. It is ideally located for anyone travelling up or down the A1 who needs somewhere to stay and cant be bothered with the hassle of heading into the city or the naffness of the larger (usually more expensive, and certainly poorer facilities and food) value chains.
Review 65:one thing was the bed was tiny. i'm 6'2 but my shins touched the edge. also the duvet didn't cover us in the slightest. forever waking up cold. thankfully given that late check out.
Review 66:bowburn hall was everything we were after. nice room, staff, food, late bar, near where were visiting - were given a brilliant late check out too. but it's a bit odd in the location, i'm guessing there were once fields as far as the eye could see, then the council penned it in the middle of a housing estate. Its not a bad thing just an odd thing.
Review 67:The bathroom doors didn't give you much privacy as see through. They got my food order wrong but instead of telling me about the delay I was only made aware when my boyfriend was served his dinner so when I received mine he was nearly finished which I thought was unacceptable. Crack in the window. When we went down for our meal they were so over crowded me and my boyfriend were put in the big empty cold ballroom w
Review 68:The rooms were nice and bed comfortable. The food was nice as well. Value for money
Review 69:small problem that the television remote control did not work, which would not have been a problem had it not been for the fact that I read about the same problem for the same room in a previous review.
Review 70:had a quiet night and plenty of free parking
Review 71:Food was not very good on the one evening we chose to eat in (a lamb dish in far too much sauce). Considering the cost, we felt it better to eat out in Durham for the rest of our stay (3 nights).
Review 72:Easy access and plenty of parking spaces. Handy for Durham.
Review 73:A minor fault was the remote handset did not operate the room TV but TV worked OK.
Review 74:It is a small oldish hotel and I was in a small single room. The room was clean, the bathroom was clean, when I needed some more milk for tea the duty manager quickly delivered them to my room. In the evening the bar and dining staff were friendly and the enjoyable hot food was promptly brought.
Review 75:Our bedroom not as clean, shower curtain dirty and bath stained,
Review 76:welcome and all staff good . Breakfast value for money, very comfortable bed.Relaxing surroundings bar and lounge. The actual hotel very clean.
Review 77:We were very impressed by the staff who all seemed quite young but were all very helpful and polite. We had 2 evening meals in the hotel which were both excellent. There was a very good choice for cooked breakfast but 1 small criticism, there could have been a little more choice for the continental option. We will certainly use the hotel again when visiting the area.
Review 78:The bed was very lumpy and uncomfortable.
Review 79:We loved yhe location and facilities. We were well looked after by the staff who made us all feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Absolutely lovely hotel and made the wedfing just perfect.
Review 80:breakfast was precooked was cold peeling wallpaper on the ceiling and wall no pressure in the shower very limited channels on tv
Review 81:bed was comfortable
Review 82:Glass door to ensuite
Review 83:Helpfulness and friendliness of staff. Lovely room. We had a power cut whilst we were there, however, as we could not have a cooked breakfast we had a continental breakfast instead. When we checked out we were offered a refund for the cost of breakfast.
Review 84:The staff were helpful. The room was compact but very comfortable. The Hotel was quiet and the facilities were good. The food was lovely and we felt it was good value for money and we would stay again.
Review 85:As there is no lift a porter should be on hand to take your luggage to your room especially if your on the 2nd floor. The hotel could do with a spruce up and a lick of paint. The breakfasts were not very good which was odd seeing as the Dinner was good?
Review 86:Arrived at a very quiet tucked away hotel although its next to a housing estate which has obviously grown around it. Welcome excellent, the room was quite large and the bed very comfortable. Food at dinner was good and the seating very nice.
Review 87:The breakfast was awful! Poor choice, stale croissants and a broken toast machine. It was so bad, we didn't bother having breakfast on the second day. There were party nights on both Friday and Saturday nights. Extremely loud music going on until midnight. If you want a decent breakfast and a good nights sleep - look elsewhere!
Review 88:The rooms were old fashioned but fairly clean. Decent restaurant on site.
Review 89:Very loud 'music' when we arrived that continued almost until midnight. Incessant Motorway noise even with windows closed. Floor boards in the room creaked. Floor boards in the corrodors creaked and caused disturbance. Doors creaked and made a noise when closing. A bright green light on the TV started flaching in the middle of the night and had to get up and cover it up. Excessive light came into the room under the door.
Review 90:Pleasant dining room. Lovely grounds but too tired to walk around and enjoy after such a poor night sleep.
Review 91:Room was quite small and the en suite had a partially see-through door which reduced privacy.
Review 92:Location, friendliness of staff, cleanliness, ease of parking.
Review 93:It was very noisy! There was no mention of a band when booking, and the music went on until late... it was right below the bedroom!! Breakfast - no croissants or fruit compote in sight. The cereal bowls needed another run through the dishwasher etc etc. Probably down to staff training, but being asked to take a seat at a table that's not been cleared is not ideal & why didn't the waitress wipe the table down before serving the food.... It wasn't us who found this having talked with the other guests.
Review 94:Evening meals were generous portions though sensibly priced with a couple of real ales available. Bedrooms were very clean and tastefully decorated. The conservatory area was also very comfortable.
Review 95:Lovely breakfast, quick service. Nice pillows! Good tv. Just wanted an inexpensive bed for the night while visiting Durham Uni Open Day. All good but think we were sleeping above the disco!
Review 96:The room was very small and the bed very uncomfortable, never got a good nights sleep. Also far too much furniture in the room.
Review 97:The staff were very nice and the food was excellent
Review 98:The room was small and very pleasant, but the bathroom door was made of glass and not completely frosted.
Review 99:very comfortable with helpful staff. Dinner and breakfast were both very good.
Review 100:Breakfast was awful, one day the bread was mouldy another day there was scrambled egg trodden into the floor the tables were wombly with card put under their legs to stabilise them! The breakfast service was also v poor I saw mainly young people at front of house who needed training
Review 101:Bedroom serviced well everyday room really clean and recently renovated room
Review 102:Waited nearly 10 minutes to be checked in. Couldn't find a member of staff. Attention to detail, dirty cutlery, sticky tables etc.
Review 103:Close enough but far enough away. Well located for the motorway network. Good choice of menu and quite good quality. Comfortable beds
Review 104:breakfast was awful. no yogurt, hard boiled eggs ordered which came soft and had knife slashes in them. full english was ordered which came without the egg. waiter said it was coming on a separate plate. husband sat waiting for it while rest of breakfast went cold. mushrooms were luke warm and not cooked enough. Dreadful.
Review 105:Stayed on a Sunday night having driven 250 miles as attending my fathers funeral the next morning. Ten minutes after arrival a wedding started which was not a problem until after 11pm when I was trying to get to sleep. Constant door banging and noise from the other residents. If I'd been told I wouldn't have booked to stay on that particular night and found alternative accommodation.
Review 106:Good location just off A1 and only ten minutes to Durham City center. Friendly helpful staff Good value for money
Review 107:Have been to Durham many times before but never to Bowburn Hall as had not "discovered" it. It was a nice surprise to find this place and would certainly consider using again. Was only there one night so cannot do a full critique but I didn't spot any negatives from a one night only point of view.
Review 108:The bedroom was fine but the downstairs rooms - restaurant etc weren't very clean. They did have lots of people with children eating there - it was very busy but the following morning the tables were greasy and the floor still dirty. It just looked as if the whole place needed a good clean - not just a quick vacuum!
Review 109:Very friendly staff and my husband loved his freshly cooked breakfast.
Review 110:Local Council temp road signs but what the hell we got there safe and had a fantastic night.
Review 111:We arrived very late ,reason road works for repairs by the council ,road closed in most directions. when we did arrive stressed out, the duty manager and the chef were in the main bar a meal was offered and drinks enjoyed My wife and I thank them both ,Yes we will be back. Once again Thank you for the warm welcome. David 7 Eileen Cockermouth Cumbria
Review 112:Glass toilet door in bedroom in full view of bed and hence no privacy. Not offered a choice on the menu during a wedding meal. Beer quality could have been better for price.
Review 113:Garden Views were good from the rear. Quiet in the hotel good for sleep. Good food quality and staff were friendly.
Review 114:Disco below our room til midnight meant we couldn,t sleep at all. We weren,t told that there would be agadoo playing til all hours, if we had known we wouldn,t have booked in. It,s not a country retreat. The grounds are limited and it,s situated in the middle of a housing estate. We told them in advance we were vegetarian. They offered us the cooked breakfast minus the meat....stepping back int ime to the 1980,s! When I asked to speak to the manager about the noise levels I was told they would contact me, they never did. When I emailed later they ignored me. Very poor service and very rude.
Review 115:What was there not to Like !
Review 116:Because the Hotel had a wedding party booking , there was an issue with our room with noise. Nikki and Callum were amazing and re roomed us without question :-) Impeccable Service !
Review 117:If you do not have transport it is out of the town centre and a taxi is 10£ each way. No lifts so if a person who has climbing problems there is a lot of stairs to negate.
Review 118:Nice hotel with lovely grounds ideal for wedding
Review 119:nothing at all.
Review 120:staff were warm, friendly and very helpful, food was delicious never ate any place else ....the general ambiance of the hotel was superb.... Tucked away just close enough to Durham. Bedrooms were lovely too ...enough space for what you needed for a few days away .
Review 121:The single room I booked (number 17), although clean and comfortable, was a little on the small size.I would recommend booking a double room, even though a single traveler, for the extra space.
Review 122:The location was very convenient, being situated just off the A1 and within easy reach of Durham The hotel itself was full of character with delightful gardens and a lovely conservatory restaurant. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was plentiful and of good quality.
Review 123:Bathroom a little small.
Review 124:Staff friendly, food very good.
Review 125:Visiting friends so location was ideal.
Review 126:No blind in the bathroom
Review 127:The bed was very comfortable, the room was quiet, friendly staff and a good breakfast, plenty of parking and easy to find
Review 128:Third stay here. ALL the staff are so friendly and helpful - will always stay here when in the area.
Review 129:Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 130:FIRE DOOR HINGES COULD DO WITH A LITTLE OIL
Review 131:STAFF REALLY FRIENDLY WE WERE MADE TO FEEL WELCOME FROM THE MOMENT WE ARRIVED UNTIL THE MOMENT WE LEFT
Review 132:Good value and service no problems
Review 133:The kitchen staff were able to cope with my son-in-law's very difficult diet.
