Kings Arms Hotel

Kings Arms Hotel descritpion
Possibly the oldest travelers' inn in Wales, the friendly Kings Arms has its own micro brewery and an excellent restaurant offering tapas and a varied dining menu.
Standing since at least 1400, the inn still has many original features. It was visited by Roundheads, Cavaliers and even King Charles II. The elegant rooms have reasonable rates and a feeling of relaxed luxury.
The Kings Arms is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons and about 40 minutes from Cardiff. Newport, the site of the 2010 Ryder Cup, is 20 minutes away.
The Kings Arms hosts live music and special evenings of jazz, comedy and acoustic music every Friday and Saturday night. There is also an art gallery and a function area.

Reviews for Kings Arms Hotel
Review 1:Slept in room 4, sweet little single room, but probably about time to get a new mattress.
Review 2:Great staff, lovely food, quirky delightful little hotel/pub
Review 3:Most of the staff were very helpful and courteous but there was a lady with long bright auburn hair who should not be in the leisure industry for sure ! She let her team down considerably and clearly didn't understand any aspect of ' service with a smile '
Review 4:Ideal town centre location . The hotel is tastefully decorated and in keeping with its character. Few tips - lighting in small restaurant is too bright and not conducive to a relaxing atmosphere. Food was excellent and I highly recommend the mushroom tagliatelle
Review 5:We had a room overlooking the smoking area within the the pub. The noise went on until 1.00 am on the first night of our stay until I stuck my head out of the window and the staff went back indoors. The saniflow system was not operating very well and we had sewage in our shower, fortunately (for us) on the morning we left. Booking.com took the money for the stay from my bank account long before our stay with no notice or acknowledgement from either Booking.com or the hotel. The website says that no payment will be taken until your stay, then in very small print later states that money can be taken at any time.
Review 6:Breakfast good.
Review 7:Car Parking was OK but it was off site even if only a couple of hundred yards away which makes it a little inconvenient - but overall still worth it.
Review 8:Staff were really excellent - and the food in the restaurant, both dinner and breakfast were top class - great experience and one we shall repeat. Definitely an old building with plenty of character which we like - not just a building with lots of boxes for bedrooms. Very central to the town.
Review 9:Somewhat impractical bathroom.
Review 10:Quirky interesting attractive beamed and well decorated and furnished room. Spot on Manager and Hosting Staff Friendly bar Good functions room
Review 11:Warm welcome that I have become accustomed to, with great hospitality from John and all the team. "Reverend James" ale perfectly kept. Excellent food. Hotel has been sensitively updated, keeping plenty of character. Couldn't have been more helpful, and even extended check out to 12 noon so I could climb Sugar Loaf one morning.
Review 12:Lots of children running around the hotel until quite late on Saturday night, it is a small old cottagy type place so the noise of footsteps travelled along with their screeches!
Review 13:Quirkiness of the place
Review 14:- windows in our room a bit low (you can see the lower waist of guests from outside - toilet pump noise (starts spontaneously at night) - rooms not heated when we came (October)
Review 15:- location vers central - friendly staff - food
Review 16:Emailed ahead that it was our anniversary and we were given a beautiful double room up in the eves. The whole place is full of character. Loved the wonky floors! Staff were all lovely. Fab breakfast Left my debit card in the room and it was posted back to me the following day. Great customer service!
Review 17:Nothing not to like, loved everything
Review 18:Loved the quirkiness of the building, the sloping floors, low doorways, funny little stairways, just the whole character of a really old building
Review 19:For the money we paid it would have been nice to have had the bin emptied from the previous occupant and the tea and coffee replenished. We were provided with plenty more when we asked though.
Review 20:Hotel was in an excellent location as the main high street was just a short walk. The restaurant was excellent with a varied and interesting menu. Breakfast was very good too.
Review 21:Having to leave at the end of my stay!
Review 22:A warm welcome and great hospitality from John and all the team. "Reverend James" ale perfectly kept. Excellent food. Hotel has been sensitively updated, keeping plenty of character.
Review 23:Warm welcome and great hospitality from John and all the team. "Reverend James" ale perfectly kept. Excellent food. The hotel is full of character, sensitively updated but mostly kept.
Review 24:poor pressure on the toilet flush but great shower pressure.
Review 25:all staff were efficient and friendly at all times. the food was fantastic and the room very clean and lovely.
Review 26:The room was great, staff were excellent and the Hotel location was perfect with a car park across the road. Not to mention a very tasty breakfast too.
Review 27:The Friendliness of the staff. My bedroom (No 11) Location - Coming from the north good road connection . Big adjacent car cark - Payment needed :-(
Review 28:Your website advertises this hotel as having parking, it does not and this caused us inconvenience. Also, while the rooms are lovely the beds are hard and made for an uncomfortable nights sleep.
Review 29:Excellent staff and food, clean, nicely decorated and charactful rooms and location for walking into town.
Review 30:A very nice welcome and the staff were excellent. Both Dinner and braekfast very good.A Inn right in the centre of time.easy parking in the car park opposite,
Review 31:Unfortunately the breakfast both mornings was average. The cooked breakfast was cold and the toast was hard and like eating crisp breads. A lot of improvement is needed in this area.
Review 32:Good location, good sized comfortable and quiet room. Very clean and well maintained. Staff very pleasant.
Review 33:May be one or two plainer menu choices on the evening menu ,but the chef did make a good meal for my Husband taking in his need, for something plainer
Review 34:Staff attention to detail and kindness Cleanliness throughout Position ,places of interest with in easy reach. Menu varied and interesting ,food good and fresh understanding of diet needs Comfortable lounge area. Spacious Bath/shower room We were given an upgrade on our room
Review 35:The double room we booked turned out to be a family room with a double and two single beds. The room was overpacked with furniture, with little space to move around and only room for one bedside table beside the double bed, and no chairs.
Review 36:Friendly staff, and excellent evening meal.
Review 37:Stayed at this hotel for our wedding night. The girls who worked there made us very welcome and at home. The room we stayed in was amazing!! clean and very comfortable no complaints at all. I will be recommeding this hotel to friends and family.
Review 38:No fruit at breakfast. Quite noisy at the bar downstairs until midnight. Often difficult to find staff in the evenings to pick up and drop off keys from the office. The keys are unsecure - I went in and got them myself a few times so really, anybody could have picked them up and gone into our room!
Review 39:Spacious and nicely decorated/laid out bedroom and bathroom. Good shower. Good cooked breakfast.
Review 40:Wifi only worked in a small section of the hotel and coyldnt get signal in room. Beds were a bit saggy.
Review 41:The food and the restoration of heritage building
Review 42:Elderly relative travelled with us and had single room over the bar which was very noisy until late. The live singer on Sunday was also underneath her room and she had to wander round the town to escape the noise.
Review 43:Location with car park opposite was good for a busy town. Staff were lovely and rooms very pleasant.
Review 44:Room in attic was too low headed for me .. I had to stoop down for usingevery facility and with a touch of arthritic knees and lower back discproblems, it was too cramped and I had to bend down for 90% of my timethere and the staircase to the attic was very difficult for me, steep,no real bars to hold onto and some unstable flooring.. A little toodangerous perhaps to avoid making the remark !! I liked the general oldetyme atmosphere in general, but felt these conditions were not suitableand not what I thought we had booked (I believe there was an error madeaccording to a member of staff in the room allocation but we had drivenfrom Falmouth via Barnstaple that day and too tired to re negotiate as Ibelieve it was full !!). I believe the price was too expensive for theconditions experienced. Parking across the road was no problem however.I did nevertheless find the staff to be very courteous especially oncheck in ... and living now in Thailand, my Thai wife enjoyed talkingwith a very helpful and courteous young lady staff member ... fromThailand, which was a lovely surprise for us both. I would stay againbut not the attic.
Review 45:Service attitude and breakfast
Review 46:Avoid room 5. Small with little comfort. Would be better without the pub which is part of the hotel. The free car park is not really close to the hotel and is down a very steep slope. The car park opposite can be used for £1 per day if you are sensible.
Review 47:Very convenient location for the town and the wonderful countryside.
Review 48:Nothing
Review 49:We arrived early and had take our hire car back to Newport, staff carried our bags upstairs and stored them until we returned by train. The same went when we left, all were helpful and could not do enough to please us. The meals were all great. Great 16th century hotel
Review 50:I was there for work & had an attic room, it was impossible to get wifi. In addition the last few stairs up to my room were very steep. This was the second time I had stayed, & I was really disappointed with room location compared to last time. But would stay again
Review 51:Public areas were great, food was very good
Review 52:Our only grumble was that although we had requested one glutton free breakfast in advance, no effort had been made to replace the sausage or cereal with glutton free substitutes, (every supermarket stocks them) and we had to wait while a glutton free roll was defrosted and toasted by which time the hot breakfast was finished. We had to attend a funeral so a decent breakfast would have been appreciated
Review 53:The inn and the staff were lovely. We were made to feel welcome and our room was really comfortable. The resturant was very busy, but the staff went out of their way to make sure we had every thing we needed and the food and wine was first class.
Review 54:Good location with nearby parking. The view from our window was lovely! Also, we were there on an unusually hot day, and a member of the staff was kind enough to bring us a fan -- much appreciated!
Review 55:We had our wedding reception at the King's Arms in 2014, we returned for our 1st anniversary and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating, friendly or helpful. We truly had a fantastic time.
Review 56:Nothing - and I can be very fussy!!
Review 57:The breakfast was fab and cooked to my request - one scrambled egg with smoked salmon. Attention to detail was excellent - fresh flowers, newspapers, great cup of tea.
Review 58:Not a bad experience as such more an observation, If you are going to cater for travellers then the provision of a lift would go a long way to making the stay more pleasurable.
Review 59:Good internet connections, Breakfast portions were large enough however the dinner portions that the wife ordered were a little on the smaller side.
Review 60:It would be great to have a shower room or curtain over the bath tub because it was quite difficult not to make a mess.
Review 61:The room was absolutely breath taking, it felt like travelling back to another century. The bed was super comfy as well as the bath tub. The staff was lovely and the location is also great, walking distance from cafe shops, restaurants, beauty salons, etc.
Review 62:Staff should not call elderly people "my darling". This is patronising and unwelcome! The dining chairs are too low.
Review 63:I found most things good and the staff very pleasant and helpful.
Review 64:Most Friday nights they play loud music in the bar and the bass reverberates through the whole hotel and is impervious to ear plugs. No sleeping or reading until it closes down.
Review 65:Friendly staff, good breakfast, nice clean room
Review 66:Not a bad experience, but our room over the bar was noisy with a Friday night Hen Party celebrating below. A bit unexpected as it was very quiet the night before, but then it was a pub.
Review 67:staff were friendly, accommodating and efficient. Lovely comfortable stylish room and scrum my breakfast.
Review 68:Whilst there is some free parking available, it is in a public car park a short walk down the road. This wasn't too much of a problem but not ideal.
Review 69:I stayed there with a friend- chosen at random from this website as a place to bed for a night while we did a our little adventure tour of South Wales. It is small, clean and comfortable. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfast is very hearty and plenty of options. We also ate a very nice meal there too one evening. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is located right on the edge of the town of Abergavenny- not a huge amount going there, some small shops and tea shops aplenty. A restful place overall.
Review 70:Lovely staff, really helpful and accommodating. We were a large group of friends celebrating a 50th. Had dinner for 16 in a private area. Room gorgeous (number 11) - free standing bath. Delicious food. Great spot if you are walking Offa's Dyke. We did the Hay on Wye to Pandy leg and the hotel is just 4 miles away.
Review 71:Our room was right above the patio bit where people were drinking so it was a bit loud. However, the reception is only manned until midnight meaning that everyone went to bed at midnight!
Review 72:The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was great. Hotel is like an old style cottage, very cute - also very creaky.
Review 73:We had to ask for the heating to be put on in our room. There is no parking except in public car park.
Review 74:Welcoming staff Excellent restaurant Good value
Review 75:Arrived Sunday at 5.30pm expecting to book a meal. We were informed that no food was available on Sunday evenings. This should have been included on information about this Hotel.
Review 76:Breakfast was great.
Review 77:Would have preferred soft pillows and feather duvets - otherwise all good.
Review 78:Smart interiors- enjoyed the fact that locals used the bar- and where very friendly. After our meal we went and listened to the live music in the bar. Got bought drinks by locals-great atmosphere!!
Review 79:No sofa in room as advertised. Restaurant menu a little limited, if you like to eat fish your ok with current menu.
Review 80:The staff were excellent, beautiful large attic room with very comfortable bed. Delicious Welsh breakfast!
Review 81:Unfortunately weekend spoilt by one day when room was not cleaned, bed not made, refreshments re-stocked. Told it was language problem with cleaning staff. Appropriate apologies made but no concessions, even a drink, were offered.
Review 82:Location. Food. Comfort. Decent price. Second year we have used Kings Arms for Easter. WIll continue to use it.
Review 83:We stayed in the gorgeous Sugarloaf room in the attic which has a beautiful, freestanding bath and very comfy bed. Be aware that the stairs up to the room are very steep but despite being pregnant and a bit off balance I managed them slowly! The 16th century building itself is beautiful and the restaurant area is lovely. We ate there on their Thursday curry night and it was one of the best curries I've ever had. We could smell it cooking all day and it was heavenly! The staff were incredubly helpful and friendly. We will absolutely be staying again. The location of the hotel is fab too, it's on the edge of the main town pedestrian area so easy to walk around the town to explore.
Review 84:Noise factor from function room. It was if the speakers to the disco were in the room. Shame as everything else was excellent.
Review 85:Very comfortable and clean. Good food.
Review 86:Fantastic room, situated in the loft, very spacious and clean. We ate in the resturant for evening meal and the food was gorgeous. Wonderful staff and the breakfast was lovely.
Review 87:As the bath was in the bedroom, there was a shower over the bath which was surrounded by carpet! Also only 1comfy chair and position of TV meant it was awkward to watch it except from the bed. Not a major issue!
Review 88:The room we had was large and comfortably furnished. Pleasantly warm. Enjoyable evening meal, well presented breakfast.
Review 89:the size and standard of the room were excellent and the jacuzzi bath was a lovely bonus. The breakfast was done to a very high standard (we're sorry we didn't have our evening meal there). We would definitely stay again.
Review 90:i really enjoyed my stay at the Kings arms. All the staff were friendly and really helpful. The bedroom was clean and beautifully laid out and the breakfast was absolutely delicious! Thank you for an excellent experience.
Review 91:Would have liked more info on fire escapes. Worried about having to get down old steep steps to get out if fire ever happened. Not usually a worrier but only disadvantage of being in a superior attic room.
Review 92:Rare to have a hotel that does not expect full payment in advance. Staff very friendly. We were concerned about noise as there was a band playing but we were upgraded to the attic and only noise was road sweep at 5am. Not the hotel 's fault. Bath in room was a first too - different.
Review 93:Lovely quirky hotel. Staff were fantastic - all very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast was delicious too. Would highly recommend and will definitely visit again.
Review 94:Much too noisy overnight. The sound proofing is not good, it's an old building; and the staff on a Saturday evening were talking till 7am the following morning. Also the central heating was barely adequate
Review 95:The general quaintness of the building. A good breakfast
Review 96:We had room 6 which overlooked a central courtyard. Smokers from the bar below were very loud even just chatting. It felt like the window was open and there was a draft. This pulled in the smoke and the room smelt of cigerette smoke, to the point that the fire alarm went off. The toilets/shower were fitted with pumps/grinders, presumably for the plumbing, these were very loud to the point you could hear other rooms going to the toilet. WiFi was basically non existent in our room(trace signal that kept dropping out)
Review 97:Room was nicely decorated, location is good, breakfast was nice.
Review 98:We arrived on the Sunday - too late for lunch - booked up anyway and found out that there was no dining service on the Sunday evening or in fact on the Monday. Tied in with several other venues!
Review 99:The standard room we booked was fine but as there was a party about to start in the courtyard below our window we were offered a free upgrade to a deluxe room - before the party started or before we asked!. Nice touch
Review 100:Thin walls, could hear next door, but old building. Traffic noise, but again old building etc
Review 101:Evening meal was excellent. Very polite service, bedroom very comfortable.
Review 102:I am not particularly sound-sensitive but I would not recommend this hotel based on the levels of noise from the pub on the ground floor which can be heard through the paper-thin walls. We tried to go to sleep at 11.00 pm but the noise from the customers downstairs was so bad that we didn't get to sleep till 1.00 am. We could hear what people were saying to the point where we knew the names of the customers ("Alan, Alan!") and who had drunk too much to drive ("You're NOT driving!!!"). In addition to this, the toilet and sink in our bathroom were both powered by a very loud pump!
Review 103:The decor was nice and the food was very good.
Review 104:If booked in on a Friday be prepared to be kept awake until about 1 am ish as the night club it situated below all rooms. ( not late for some I know )Then chatting until early hours outside main entrance.
Review 105:Very noisy, no chance of sleep before the pubs empties out at about midnight (even on the second floor). Very much a pub with rooms, not a hotel. Very little headroom in room 11 (Sugarloaf). Expensive for what it is.
Review 106:Good location, comfortable bed.
Review 107:The only thing that spoilt a lovely w/end, apart from the rain, but it was November in Wales, was the delay from ordering food to it actually arriving, the food was very good when it arrived!
Review 108:Warm comfortable rooms, tasty food, good selection of draught beer, friendly staff.
Review 109:Access to rooms was through an open yard. Not much fun in the rain and rather full of smoing refugees from the bar.
Review 110:Food was excellent, both breakfast and dinner. Room spacious and comfortable.
Review 111:The historic building and the unique decort of this grand coaching inn. The menu was in the main different from usual Inns and we had a wonderfull lunch there. The breakfast was a typical English breakfast but served more like neuvo cuisine. Would love to stay there again!!
Review 112:We stayed here for weekend break and found the staff really welcoming. The rooms were very clean and tidy with tea and coffee facilities. There was even a bottle of water each by the bed. The breakfast was nice and well presented. The only down side was the wifi reception which was patchy at times. All in all it was well worth the price and we would definitely stay there again.
Review 113:We loved the welcome from both staff and other customers. Great night on Friday in the bar with a very good singer/guitar player, lots of locals joining in. Breakfast excellent, not too much. Would go again.
Review 114:Noisy water system. people on stairs very noisy though we were probably just unlucky We had a front room onto the street and a taxi rank which was also disturbing.
Review 115:Quirky old hotel. Staff good always helpful. Bed nice and comfy .breakfast okay.
Review 116:The food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was cosy, clean and inviting. The building is old and has a lot of character.
Review 117:Having to knock the manager out of bed to gain access to our room. Whenwe asked originally how we would get back in we were told to hand thekey into reception so they were aware we were still out & somebodywould wait up until we returned. We had to wait some considerable timeto be let in.
Review 118:good reception, interesting building incorporating old and new, very clean, excellent breakfast, close to town and to facilities, enjoyed Tuesday market, also not far to enjoy excellent scenery.
Review 119:Smell of smoke from below courtyard.(room 6) No one around in morning at circ 7am, very dark stumbling around trying to find lights. WIFI doesn't work in all rooms.
Review 120:Clean room , furnished nicely. Good breakfast. Staff friendly
Review 121:Only downside for me was I had the twin room, so sleeping in a single bed
Review 122:Modern requirements wrapped up in a 16th century property - if sloping floors are too quirky maybe this isn't the place for you - personally I love such character.
Review 123:The noise from the street - room 3 was at the front and there was a lot of noise particularly in the early hours when the bar / disco closed. This kept us awake. The wifi was non-existent in this room. There wasn't a mirror that could be used for the hairdrier.
Review 124:The room was comfortable, shower and facilities fine and food really good. Staff were friendly.
Review 125:We spent one night at Kings Arm would have liked to stay longer, great room and great staff, very helpful, they helped us to organise a hire vehicle, everything was grwat
Review 126:The breakfast was underwhelming and really needs improvement. It made us reappraise our opinion of the hotel, such a shame when otherwise it was so good.
Review 127:The hotel was very good, the room excellent and the situation was just as we wanted.
