Reviews for BEST WESTERN The Kings Head Hotel

Review 1:Room to far away Bathroom very very tiny My husband is disabled and we asked for disabled room After having to climb 2 flights of stairs and then walk down a long corridor we asked for a twin but got 1 small double 1 small single could not get in shower as bath and steps to high Had to walk up steps to use toilet Not good at all

Review 2:The location and the fre car parking

Review 3:The evening meal in the restaurant was badly cooked and the chef wasn't willing to assist with my simple request bearing in mind that there were only three guests in the dining room. The breakfast was equally as bad with the bacon tough and the coffee cold.

Review 4:The manageress was very helpful but the staff were just ok. The room was clean and warm and the linen fresh

Review 5:Great location for a stay in Richmond. Good breakfast (always nice to se smoked Haddock on the menu). Comfortable and friendly hotel. What more do you want!

Review 6:Our en suite sadly didn't really match up to the room. Yes it was spacious but looked very dated. The lever for changing bath to shower was awkward and water sprayed out of the joint. For one night though it was fine.

Review 7:We booked a "large" room and it was HUGE! It was beautifully decorated and furnished and the enormous bed was very comfy. The staff were really helpful and the girl in charge of the bar and restaurant was brilliant. We noticed how attentive she was to everyone's needs.

Review 8:The car park is small. If you miss getting a space in the outer part, it is difficult to manoeuvre around.

Review 9:I liked the building; it had some character to offer. The place was well furnished in keeping with the property's age and style, and was well cleaned and very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful plus it's smack bang in the middle of Richmond.

Review 10:Some of the staff decidedly "dopey". First breakfast the waiter was very slow and got several cooked breakfast orders wrong. Also the beds weren't " made"-the duvet was just puled up over the wrinkled bottom sheet so we had to strip the bed and start again??

Review 11:Friendly staff and atmosphere

Review 12:the bed has seen better days the car park is quite small

Review 13:good location in market square. ask for a quiet room though, we had room 7 and no trouble with noise. huge room although old fashioned clean enough lovely open fire downstairs. nice breakfast and friendly staff

Review 14:Pillows a bit to hard as was the bed apart from that the stay was fine

Review 15:We enjoy richmond but were unable to stay in our usual bed and breakfast so we tried the best western

Review 16:Market square can be noisy early in the morning Limited dining space

Review 17:Great location in market square History of building fascinating Great breakfast Friendly staff Amazing bathroom

Review 18:A lovely building with a lot of character. I enjoyed looking at the wonderful paintings on the walls around the staircase. The hotel is perfectly situated with convenient parking at the rear.

Review 19:Very tired room with cheap furnishings and metal bed springs. Noisy traffic not helped by old sash Windows

Review 20:Had obviously been a splendid hotel and has a faded elegance.

Review 21:Room was very warm due to hot water pipes running to the radiators (which were off). Shower over bath was set back, so water ran onto floor.

Review 22:Very friendly staff, reasonably priced bar food and very good quality too. Comfortable and well appointed room. Decent bed.

Review 23:The hotel is old and in need of significant improvement works. The hot water was only intermitent. The local market stall were setting up at 4am outside the hotel which kept me awake. Not worth £110 per night.

Review 24:The staff were reasonably helpfull.

Review 25:Gloomy downstairs room for dinner with no small portions available when requested - what a waste of good food. No wall shower in room. Bedside lights too dim to read by. Being right at end of 2nd floor with no lift not good for the elderly!

Review 26:Lovely position on the cobbled Market Square. Breakfast room light and airy with lovely view - shame this wasn't used for dinner. Staff all very pleasant and helpful.

Review 27:Generally run-down and scruffy facilities. Horrible dirty back entrance. Noise from adjacent street at night. Half trained staff. Towels thin and worn. Insufficient toiletries.

Review 28:Friendly, enthusiastic staff.

Review 29:Being woken at 05:00 by delivery trucks

Review 30:Its' location, the general demeanor of the staff every body was very welcoming did not see one miserable face during our entire stay. Our dog was made to feel welcome as well she certainly got a lot of pats and cuddles. Food was excellent as was the overall service.

Review 31:There was a mix up with our starter at the evening meal, which took about 45mins, and my wife's gammon was over cooked, but the young trainee lad was very good and we had no other complaints.

Review 32:The staff were very friendly and easy to talk to.

Review 33:The bed and pillows were a little hard and uncomfortable.

Review 34:The location is fantastic! Easy for parking, all activities and areas of interest are right on the door step!

Review 35:The single room felt dingy and the arrangements had not been thought through. The lighting in particular was inadequate, especially in the bathroom. A single spot in a very tall room (upwards of 12 feet in my estimation) is not enough. The décor was slap dash, unfilled, untidy edges. The small room easily over-heated, but the traffic noise was a problem if windows were opened. Box sash windows could only be opened at bottom, making noise issue worse. TV was on a swivel that could not achieve a convenient viewing angle as it was jammed too far into corner. Kettle was right under TV!

Review 36:The location is very handy for castle and river. The Market Square is a cobbled area in the centre of the town. The rooms are very tall. The common areas are very nice, with some sense of history.

Review 37:Everything.

Review 38:NOTHINGSaw it , went inside , viewed 2x rooms , absolutely disgusting.Junk furnishing. Decorating unfit for a public toilet. Worst I'veever seen for the money. Only good enough for a backpacker. I refused toaccept the room and asked for a cancellation.

Review 39:Car park is small so you may not get a space at busy times. Rooms anddecor now a little bit tired, but as this is a old and historic buildingthere are probably limited opportuinties to update.

Review 40:A centrally located historic Georgian hotel with friendly helpful staff, with Richmond Castle and the historic Georgian Theatre within easywalking distance. A good base to explore Richmond and the surroundingareas of North Yorkshire. Excellent breakfast.

Review 41:Came back to hotel on Friday night at 11.10 pm to find the bar was closed. We were only able to take a drink to the room. I feel this was very poor for a large hotel in the centre of Richmond. It was closed again on the Saturday night

Review 42:Good area to explore

Review 43:Being woken up at 8.30am by a drilling sound outside our bedroom window. Can only describe as trying to sleep in a builders yard.

Review 44:Lovely old but modernised hotel.

Review 45:Very slow service in the bar, bathroom was pretty dated and a bit scruffy.Tea making facilities in room were a bit sparten.Didn't think it was good value for money.

Review 46:Large bed, good location, some of the staff were very good.

Review 47:The hotel needs a major uplift. Gives the overall impression of neglect. Had to complain about late night noise; birthday party disco in room directly below our bedroom

Review 48:The hotel's central location We did get a small reduction in price having complained about the late night noise

Review 49:Told by staff parking was first come served No mention of this when booked. Room was a very noisy from street a 6.00 am to 2.00 am so not much sleep

Review 50:The daytime receptionist was a very good and helpful and

Review 51:Breakfast disappointing. First day one small egg,one slice black pudding and small sausage.2nd day 25 min wait for breakfast 2 very small rock hard poached eggs, cold on cold toast which the butter between egg and toast didn't even start to melt.

Review 52:Staff and location.Bed adequate.

Review 53:The hotel bedrooms look very tired, with old fashioned decor and a mixture of old furniture. The bathrooms need a refit. The showers, based on a mixer tap on the bath and a shower diverter are not up to modern standards I'm afraid. The dinner arrangement of a few set tables within an open plan lounge area is a bit odd...but the breakfast room is lovely.

Review 54:The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The hotel is in a lovely location on the market square. Breakfast was first class.

Review 55:I am afraid we did not have a very good experience at breakfast. We were down for 8.30.We had to ask for more dishes for the fruit and cereal which was very depleted and had not been refilled. We ordered coffee which we had to ask for again after our breakfast had been served, likewise the toast.I had ordered boiled eggs with soildiers the eggs came with room on the side of the plate for the soldiers but no soldiers. I had to wait 5 minutes for any toast to appear..Havins said that, what we had for breakfast was very good, the eggs were done exactly right

Review 56:Most of theStaff were very friendly the hotel is in a superb location in centre of town although when we were staying there they were re doing the cobbles in the market square outside our bedroom and made a delivery at 3.30am then started work at 6.30. The staff were all very friendly and the hotel is very pleasant.

Review 57:The bed was very poor, springs showing and very creaky. The window rattled all night. a very poor nights sleep in a poor hotel. The staff were ok but unable to sort our problem with the room. No offer of recompense and am taking up with the hotel

Review 58:The location suited our purposes

Review 59:The bedrooms were very worn, our shower did not work properly and very noisy throughout the night. Dead bugs in our bathroom where it had not been cleaned properly

Review 60:The location was great and the staff were very helpful

Review 61:I loved the location. i was only there for B & B so there is not a lot to say. It was clean and comfortable. Staff were pleasant. I liked the beams in my room.

Review 62:Internet was patchy and kept dropping out. Room became very hot.

Review 63:Special mention for Simon at the front desk. He was incredibly helpful. Dinner was excellent.

Review 64:Building was in a state of poor repair, and as slightly disabled, would have preferred a walk in shower and a lift (as was on top floor)

Review 65:The staff went over and above what was expected (especially Simon and the handsome young 16yr old). Could not fault the staff in any way.

Review 66:The room was a bit on the small side and was a bit 'tired', but otherwise an excellent stay

Review 67:Excellent location, attentive and friendly staff. Great food, fab breakfast and excellent evening meal

Review 68:The hotel is based in the of the Market Place. We dined there at night and had breakfast, both were fabulous. The staff everywhere were so helpful and kind. There is an outside area, where you sit and enjoy the views.

Review 69:reception area means customers stand and staff sit---area very public accounting seems a bit hit and miss

Review 70:dinners were good staff friendly and wish to help

Review 71:Parking not enough places. bathroom no shower. Breakfast overcooked and long black hair on partners plate. left hotel after first night booked for 3 ,given no refunds only they take into consideration our remarks Lek

Review 72:wi-fi

Review 73:A little noisy at night due to Central location and market stalls being erected at 4.30am kept us awake

Review 74:The decking area outside the hotel for early evening drinks

Review 75:A very minor thing, the bedroom door lock needed attention, we felt it wasn't very secure.

Review 76:Just about everything, location perfect, staff extremely friendly and helpful. Food was very good and the breakfast chef produced the most amazingly decadent porridge we've ever tasted!

Review 77:A bit of noise from the square at night, but that wasn't the fault of the hotel.

Review 78:The staff were really friendly and helpful, the food was good, the location was excellent.

Review 79:Limited parking on site but we managed to park ok

Review 80:Excellent location, lovely food and helpful staff Rooms were very clean and bed extremely comfortable

Review 81:Shower wasn't the best and the bath took ages to fill, but didn't spoil our stay.

Review 82:Lovely big room, enormous bed and lovely view over the cobbled square. Bathroom was also lovely and big and breakfast was delicious. Staff were helpful and friendly too.

Review 83:Our room was at the front of the hotel and the taxi rank was outside our window, which kept us up until the early hours.

Review 84:The staff and facilities were really good and the breakfast excellent.

Review 85:Room cold on arrival but I had only booked 15 minutes previously.

Review 86:staff very helpful and friendly. Good breakfast. Excellent Wi-Fi. Plenty of free parking. Only 10 minutes off the A1.

Review 87:Nothing

Review 88:Staff were helpful from us first arriving. Hotel was visibly well looked after, very clean. Would recommend it to everyone who wants a nice relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Plenty to do in and around Richmond

Review 89:No warm welcome, no pleasant conversation from staff, no assistance with luggage Told breakfast wasn't included when it was Couldn't run a bath Had to lean back to get a good shower Be warned no lift

Review 90:Room was very nice to look at The location was great

Review 91:The room was cold and very drafty and noisy outside the hotel as it overlooks the Main Street area and the floor boards outside the room where all creaky when anybody walked passed your room door, and the shower was a waist of time, ie no power

Review 92:Staff politeness

Review 93:Breakfast was a bit pricey at £11 so we chiose to start the day off elsewhere, only a small gripe and in fairness the only gripe we had

Review 94:Location, standard of hotel, friendly staff and locals, it was hard to find fault with any of our weekend away

Review 95:limited car parking for the hotel and no concessions for those forced to park in the market square very tired bathroom - small space with a cracked and very poor shower that did no more than trickle water out and the hot water took forever to come through

Review 96:comfortable bedroom good wifi location old building with squeaky floorboards

Review 97:The room was chilly and the bathroom really cold.

Review 98:This was a last minute booking as we were travelling to Essex from the Scottish Highlands. The hotel was in a great location and we enjoyed the market on the Saturday morning. We arrived just in time for dinner and this was accommodated.

Review 99:One tiny thing. The mixer tap on the bath wasn't working properly so could only have a shower. Car park a bit small...two tiny things then!

Review 100:Excellent location. Check in staff very good. Nice room overlooking market square.

Review 101:We booked the evening before we arrived, so were not expecting a superior room. The room was clean and warm, but the bed was a short queen size, which was small for my husband, but we were only staying one night. We would use the hotel again, but request a full length bed on booking.

Review 102:The hotel staff were frienly and helpful. The hotel is well located in the main square, near other pubs and shops. We went to Ricmond to walk and there are nice walk around rhe Richmond area. There was a good selection of breakfast options. We had our evening meal in a dining room with a log fire.

Review 103:the room was clean and spacious but the two windows in the room faced another section of the roof so no view at all. The shower was very minimal.

Review 104:a very relaxing few days, staff were superb and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was good.

Review 105:Bed was a bit hard .....just my choice others may like a hard bed.

Review 106:The Staff attitude really stood out in a good way. Naturally helpful without being over the top. Food first class.

Review 107:The shower in room 4 was totally inefficient. Although the bathroom was clean, the black mould round the edge of the bath, was off putting.

Review 108:The staff were extremely friendly. Overall, the hotel was very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was delicious. Our room was a good size and the bed was very comfortable.

Review 109:Or room was lovely it really big with a king size bed it was nice and warm. We only stayed for one night but if we go to Richmond again I would definitely stay there. We had our evening meal there and the food and service was excellent.

Review 110:Heating was so so. The staff could have informed us about the rear parking and the breakfast times, however they didn't.

Review 111:Breakfast and the bed were excellent.

Review 112:travelling with elderly parent.lots of stairs and no disabled access and bathroom unsuitable for elderly.staff relocated us to first floor room,

Review 113:building and locality

Review 114:Bathroom a let down or rather the shower over the bath. Very awkward to use. Rest was good but bit tatty in places.

Review 115:Staff very friendly and helpful. Our super king size bed was so comfy I wanted to take it home. Location very good for all amenities. Overall I'd stay again.

Review 116:Nothing negative on the hotel front but found the place a little bit boring . We are used to visting cities such as Leeds , manchester Glasgow . I find the above more interesting as there is more to do and see . I had a nice time in Richmond but wouldnt visit again .

Review 117:The hotel was nice and the staff were very friendly and very attentive. The drinks were reasonably priced so that was great .

Review 118:Bed mattress not very good, but we re used to sleeping on a memory foam one

Review 119:Our room was one of the larger ones and we were also very impressed with the bathroom

Review 120:uncomfortably hard pillows The rear entrance to the hotel is shabby, and gives a poor first impression. The food service was slow at both dinner and breakfast.

Review 121:Good food Friendly staff. Lovely rooms Excellent location Beautifully furnished and decorated.

Review 122:Parking at the rear of hotel is very restricted. - However there is plenty of parking in the market square in front of the hotel, which is fine over night but you need a council "disc" to park in the day time and the hotel didn't have any availible on the day we visited.

Review 123:Central location and can walk to all amenities in Richmond town centre. Friendly and helpful staff. Good food. Richmond Castle is well worth a visit and only on the opposite side of the town square.

Review 124:Bar staff were the only thing to let the hotel down. They had no idea how to pull a pint and weren't sure what a double was.

Review 125:Very helpful, friendly, couldn't do enough for you.

Review 126:The dingy, scary, very small car park with confusing hotel & private bays. The lack of outside facilities (no table/chairs). The hard pillows. No lift.

Review 127:The helpful staff. The location.

Review 128:Shower was poor - little power.

Review 129:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were delicious. Room was clean and comfortable. Lounge was warm and comfortable after a day's walking.

Review 130:We were a family of 5 travelling with a dog. My husband, daughter and my parents. We had booked 2 doubles and a single. Upon arrival rooms were not ready. I explained that I had made a request upon booking that the single room be as close to at least one of the doubles as my daughter was staying on her own in the room. The receptionist said that she had still to allocate rooms and would look at this request. When told to return approx. 2pm, the rooms were still not ready, again not really an issue and we decided to have a drink from the bar. There were 3 sauvignon blanc wines on offer on the wine list and the bar did not have any!! . We were allocated 3 rooms which were on the same corridor but not together, this was disappointing as we were told that the issue with the rooms not being ready was because the hotel had been full last night and all had checked out, I do feel that considering this it would have been easier to put at least 2 of the rooms together!. The rooms are extremely tired and depressing. Very 80's and not at all relaxing. I had to dust the headboard as when I moved the dust fell off!!. My parents are elderly and we decided to eat in the bar with the dog - we were told that we could eat from the restaurant menu which, when we had read a sample menu on line and in the room looked good. However, when presented with the actual menu it did not appeal and we ordered from the bar menu. The starters were not good at all, very disappointing, the pork pies advertised to have an apple topping arrived at the table with apple sauce spread on top - not good for £6, the prawns were tasteless and again poor value as there was a fork full for over £5. The mains were slightly better but the chips frozen and all pretty tasteless! to go with our meal we ordered 2 bottles of wine - red and white. We were told that the bar did not have the wines we wanted. The bar did not have 4 white wines it advertised and 2 reds!

Review 131:location was good a bar table was reserved allowing us to eat with the dog - also at breakfast the same table was set for us in the bar. the breakfast was ok - served to us by a lovely lady. upon check out the same lady who checked us in was on reception, she sympathised with our disappointments and explained that Simon who backed away from us should have reported it to the manager. she said that she would speak to staff and apologised that we had not enjoyed our stay.

Review 132:Only one key, there should be one each. I kept having to ask to be let into our room as my wife was wandering about Richmond with teh key.

Review 133:Location, location, location.

Review 134:We were given a warm welcome by Simon when we arrived at the hotel. All the staff were delightful throughout our stay and went over and above to make our stay a good one. We will definitely return.

Review 135:- Very poor shower - didn't reach the bath area. - Broken toilet seat - Council cleaning street outside from about 5 am - impossible to sleep due to generator noise - hotel front counter staff indifferent to the problem "not our fault!"

Review 136:great room and comfortable bed great location in centre of town excellent bar staff

Review 137:Everything, the efficiency, the ambiance, the room, we were given a complimentary bottle of champagne for my birthday. Friendliness of the staff. We had such a special time.

Review 138:The wedding seemed to take priority over other guests, maybe more staff would have been the answer.

Review 139:By some error we were given the keys to an unmade room, which was immediately rectified when we told the receptionist. She could not have done more to appease us. This was a very professional approach.

Review 140:I did not get any sleep due to my bedroom being the 'fire escape'. There was a 'fob' entry system to the room. On the inside was a touch pad to leave the room, this had a flashing red light on all night that kept me awake. In the morning I complained but still had to pay for the room

Review 141:Room 17 lots of street noise till 3.45 am. Not the hotels fault,I know, but I didn't expect Richmond to be so lively! Mix up over afternoon tea,was booked 2 people for 3pm instead of 3 for 2, this was soon sorted though, and was worth waiting for

Review 142:The staff are particularly helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble.room 17 a small single, but very comfy. Lots of comfy chairs and couches in lounge and bar. Good wi fi

The Fine Print

The hotel does not have an elevator.
