Reviews for Hotel De France

Review 1:The building is a bit old and partly would need to be renovated. The room had no heating and the air con wasn't working properly.

Review 2:The location is perfect!

Review 3:Miserable room with out of date plumbing and poor lighting. Bad car access with car bornetraffic patrols hassling you to move on before unloading luggage. Gives the town's tourist appeal a bad name.

Review 4:Location and low cost. Helpful staff.

Review 5:The reception desk was unstaffed for long periods every day, making the hotel difficult to contact at short notice and rather ghostly in the early evenings and late at night.

Review 6:The staff were welcoming and helpful. The facilities were basic but clean and adequate. The old-fashioned shower was great! Plenty to see and do very nearby.

Review 7:The bedroom was really small and it had a horrible smell. It was the worst hotel we stayed in on our trip. We should have paid much less.

Review 8:The only good thing about this hotel was the location. It is right in the centre.

Review 9:Hotel seems poorly managed, surly staff, very deferred maintenance.. a shame for this historic building..!!

Review 10:Good location but parking is nearly impossible.

Review 11:They seemed to be having staffing issues and the room was not cleaned but this would not put me off staying again and it didn't matter too much because we only stayed two nights.

Review 12:The location is fantastic, the room was a great size and comfortable.

Review 13:Parking is a problem but getting a multi-day ticket at the nearby underground car park solved the problem. The hotel has a sense of faded grandeur - nice in its way but could put some people off - its not an identikit hotel chain.

Review 14:Really nice staff. Good breakfast. Comfortable room with great view over river/leafy town centre (we booked a superior room). Fabulous location in centre of town - very many good restaurants close by.

Review 15:Parking very difficult. Only expensive parking close by, and did not know that I could park on the pavement to drop off cases, as it is right by a bus lane, leading to a long walk with luggage initially.

Review 16:Attitude of staff. Young man very helpful in explaining where I could park within a third of a mile for a reasonable rate

Review 17:Helpful staff and a good restaurant attached to the hotel. Pleasant location right in the centre of town overlooking the river. Nicely furnished room.

Review 18:Almost no lights in the bed and bath rooms No door on bathroom- just a curtain Impossible to regulate hot/cold shower water No bars to hang towels on No Kleenex No chair to sit in

Review 19:Nothing

Review 20:A very dated and dingy interior. Strained carpets and flaking woodwork. Two out of three lightbulbs blown in our room. Needs proper tlc and investment.

Review 21:Great location.

Review 22:Rooms and bath room desperately need up dating, bathroom had a musty smell did not even want to us the shower

Review 23:The location was good and the view from the room over looking the river was good

Review 24:When we arrived the hotel was closed untill 1500hrs, we had tried totelephone them on the Sunday but no reply for a code to the door, wewere given a room which the carpet was dirty & the bathroom not verygood just a curtain & a very high bath 28mm to top edge with ashower inside the bath which my wife could not get into as her hip willnot stretch that far up and we had asked for a room with a shower. Noemergency Number on the interier of lift as the no, is on the front exitdoor of the hotel and no one on duty after 11.00 P.M. In my opinion itdoes not warrant a 3* rating only a 1*

Review 25:The breakfast was very good plenty of choice and everything fresh. Alsothe location was excellent.

Review 26:The shower was awful. Ran cold one minute, boiling hot the next. Impossible to get a decent shower. The carpets were very stained. Pillows poor.

Review 27:Excellent location and friendly, helpful staff. The beds were very comfortable and, yippee, the aircon worked. It was 38 degrees outside.

Review 28:Bathroom could do with upgrading and would have loved a fridge!

Review 29:Staff very friendly, great location, free wifi, very comfortable beds, good aircon, 5th time staying here and would stay again

Review 30:Its a bit old and tired for feminine or modernist tastes, and decor needs a make over but hey, - its an old hotel, and it did what I needed.

Review 31:Superb staff. Helpful, polite, considerate. Their spoken english was far far better than my spoken french. Excellent shower and air con.

Review 32:Early morning noise from street cleaners. (The narrow streets in the old town were very clean!)

Review 33:Comfortable room. Helpful and friendly staff. Great location.

Review 34:The infrastructure (plumbing, wiring, etc.) is almost, but not quite, worn out. The modern "fixes" are cheap and don't always work well. It takes a while for the hot water to make it all the way to the shower.

Review 35:Salvador Dali used to stay here. The place resonates with his character. The ancient cage elevator is still running in the center of the winding staircase. The staff (with one moody exception) were friendly, interesting, talkative people.

Review 36:Very nice hotel, very well situated and the staff was extremely helpful and nice. The room had a wonderful view and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was great too. We are definitely going back!

Review 37:Peeling paint on the windows, packets of shower gel, gray painted everywhere, aged indoor outdoor carpeting. All this contributed to an overall dingy appearance.

Review 38:The staff was terrific. The rooms were clean. The view was nice.

Review 39:Room cleaning left something to be desired - for example there was an unsatisfactory amount of dust on the legs of the chair in our room. Public areas in need of decorating.

Review 40:Very helpful reception staff. Convenience of hotel for city centre was excellent

Review 41:I wouldn't call it "bad" just a surprise. We arrived on a sunday at 1pm, after driving 3 hours. Aware that check was not till 3pm. BUT, not only can you not check in, the hotel is LOCKED till check in time with no one there (which on a sunday is actually at 4pm-noted on the door.). So, we had to find parking and something to do (easy; beautiful walking city) for 3 hrs without being able to drop off luggage...

Review 42:Fantastic location right on the Basse River (beautiful to look at but can't walk along, only from street level) and next to historic Notre Dame Tower - wow)

Review 43:could not book in when we arrived due to reception being closed.....Not to worry though, as there is a bar next door, so we started a little earlier than planned on the local wine

Review 44:Beautiful old fashioned hotel, great room. Incredible views, friendly staff and lovely breakfast

Review 45:No 24hr reception No cooked breakfast

Review 46:The guy on reception was very friendly and helpful. The place was close to the centre of Perpignan. I would have no problem staying here again.

Review 47:The double bed in our family room was a bit uncomfy for me as it wasn't firm enough. The middle was sagging so I didn't have a great night's sleep and woke up with a sore back. Single beds were fine though.

Review 48:The friendly Receptionist who was very helpful. Plus the decor and character of the hotel was perfect for our first night in France.

Review 49:Tot va estar bé, però potser l'hotel necessiti una remodelació. Everything was fine, but the Hotel needs an overhaul (specially rooms).

Review 50:Sense dubte la ubicació, en ple centre històric, per visitar tot caminant. Esmorçar prou bé i atenció del personal bona. There is no doubt, the location is great, downtown the historic center, visiting everything by walk. Breakfast was good and staff too.

Review 51:Recption is closed between 12 to 4pm

Review 52:Overlooking a pretty canal in a relatively quiet area. Room was clean and tastefully decorated. Staff helful and approchable. Overall a good stay

Review 53:I have stayed many times as a warm welcome is always guaranteed. It is right in the centre of Perpignan very close to many restaurants and bars. A short drive to the sea. Breakfast is very good with a wide choice. It is refreshing to stay in a homely, private hotel rather than an impersonal chain hotel.

Review 54:The noise made by the street cleaners early in the morning.

Review 55:Within easy walking distance of the railway station and right by the centre of the old town.

Review 56:Room was a tad too warm, air conditioning didn't work very well

Review 57:Beautiful unspoilt hotel that has kept its olde style. Location to the centre is fabulous and front of hotel over looks amazing views. Staff were more than helpful. Will definitely be booking next year!!

Review 58:We were in Perpignan between Christmas and New Year. Unfortunately the tramontana was blowing strongly and it was quite cold. As the double glazing is rudimentary we had cold drafts in the bedroom the first night which prevented us from sleeping, the other nights were better as we had an extra duvet and left the heating running.

Review 59:The location is great. The staff were friendly and helpful, telling us where the cheapest parking was, giving us extra duvets, etc.

Review 60:It was disgustingly dirty, smelled of urine, bed was not changed to clean linens. I was badly injured at their front door and there was no offer of assistance

Review 61:Location.

Review 62:the interior of the hotel was very dated and in need of total renovation and decoration. Felt very old and dingy.

Review 63:nice building, great location and great views of river and castle

Review 64:Stayed overnight here, good value for money, does what it says on the tin. Has the feel of a typical, traditional, old fashioned French hotel as we all used to stay in before chains and Formula1 took over. Great location in centre of town and good value; will use in future when need an overnight in Perpignan.

Review 65:Poor facilities, old run down not creating a comfortable feeling. Cleaness is not at an acceptable level

Review 66:Staff super friendly and service orientated! The location is excellent

Review 67:we had a room at the top of the hotel. The standard was awful - in particular we had a leaking roof which became apparent during an overnight storm - the reception closed at 10.00pm and we could not tell anyone about the leaking roof until the morning. Otherwise the room was like a hostel - not very clean, broken fittings, loose electric sockets - the list goes on.

Review 68:a good location and very attractive from the outside, the receptionist was very helpful and breakfast good

Review 69:The décor in the rooms is shabby,as usual the shower bracket was missing so had to have handheld(does no one in France know how to fix things to walls?) the price is high for the state of the hotel but it is what it is and I suppose-location is everything.

Review 70:the location is excellent, next to the castile and riverside.breakfast is GFF(good for France),and the staff are very pleasant and helpful.Bed was nice and clean.Lift works

Review 71:I imagine this was a fairly grand hotel in its heyday and it is somewhat faded now, although good quality refurbishment has taken place in reception and the breakfast room.

Review 72:Excellent location. Very friendly, helpful staff. Large, comfortable twin room. Very good base for exploring the lovely old city on foot. WE enjoyed this hotel!

Review 73:the room was a bit shabby, but sufficient for our one night stay in that gorgeous town. There was an art festival going on the night we arrived and it was fabulous.

Review 74:great location, close to public parking.

Review 75:Old style French hotel frequented by Salvador Dali and Antoine de St Exupery in its heyday, now faded its past splendours are faded but still quirkily comfortable and good value for its situation right on the edge of Perpignan old town.

Review 76:Been here many times. Very friendly helpful staff. Unique rooms, every one is different, some better than others. This is not your typical bland chain hotel but has character. It is right in the centre of Perpignan beside the famous Castillet. Only 15 mins drive to the beach.

Review 77:Hotel dark in the corridors. Door to bathroom in need of maintenance (had a curtain across it which did not give a good impression) No restaurant or bar so had to go out in the rain to find something to eat late at night. .

Review 78:Comfortable beds and got twin beds and bathtub as requested. Staff friendly and helpful. Staff offered use of an umbrella when it rained and were helpful about finding places round and about. Breakfast good value for money and plenty of choice. Brilliant location for sightseeing!!

Review 79:The overall impression was seedy, run down but clean. This is a great site but needs money spent on it. We would still stay there because it was value for money and the location great.

Review 80:The location was perfect, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful

Review 81:Very noisy so little sleep. Our room was 1st floor at front and all we could hear was traffic noise throughout night including delivery and bin lorries. Very poor acoustics at windows.

Review 82:Location! Hotel next to some lovely French restaurants and bars. Used as stopover during Spain to UK drive.

Review 83:The hotel is very old so I understand some of the facilities will be dated but the bathroom (shower especially) need to be updated.

Review 84:Location is brilliant & we had a really lovely lady on reception which was very helpful.

Review 85:Although booked a quiet room it was right beside the cleaning staff's storeroom. Noise outside was unavoidable because of the location but very loud even on 3rd floor.

Review 86:Great location,pleasant staff,no fuss

Review 87:Hotel has obviously had quite a lot of work done over the last few years but some hallways are in need of some re-furbishment.

Review 88:Excellent location, rooms a bit dated but clean, good sized en suite. Also had tea/coffee making facilities and small drinks fridge in the room, both unusual from our experience of French hotels. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 89:My daughter wasn't impressed with the bed in her room which she said was lumpy, although the beds in the room that my wife and I had were comfortable.

Review 90:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. the hotel is in a great location next to the Castillet. We thought very charge for the buffet breakfast very reasonable.

Review 91:The room was a comfort room which i would class as a below standard room yes it had aircon but very basic and the on suit was very poor and in need of renovation.

Review 92:The location was good with many restaurants the one we had the best steak I've had in a long time was the cafe de la paix and the staff were spot on.

Review 93:Beyond the reception area the hotel shows signs of wear and tear (stained and worn carpets) and its age. I suspect if you want neater surroundings and a uniform room standard (each room is differently designed) then a modern chain hotel might be preferable.

Review 94:It is perfectly located by Castillet and therefore ideal for exploring Perpignan centre. It is a simple well priced hotel with character and fine for an evening stopover (we were there for the Thursday night summer festival of music & street theatre)

Review 95:There needed to be more light so that you could read in bed.

Review 96:A welcoming, pleasant room with a lovely view and excellent air conditioning. Staff were very helpful, spoke English and we would definitely stay there again. We decided to walk to the station and it took 30 minutes

Review 97:Stayed at Hotel De France for 2 nights in June. Very friendly and helpful staff, plenty to eat for breakfast ideally situated for all your needs, would definitely stay here again.

Review 98:Perpignan

Review 99:Everything, it is very quaint, and one must tolerate a few idiosyncrasies, but that's the charm. Perfectly situated for everything. The staff are superb and you really feel at home here. I shall go back next time I am in Perpignan.

Review 100:Will never get used to hand held European showers. No tea and coffee inroom or fridge! Carpets needed a good steam clean.

Review 101:Location was excellent being in the old town. Staff very friendly andhelpful. The hotel was very clean except the carpet.

Review 102:Just perfect

Review 103:Bathroom was cramped & very dated.

Review 104:It was clean, comfortable & staff lovely. Location was excellent. Hotel was relatively quiet.

Review 105:Noise

Review 106:Breakfast was good

Review 107:Although the hotel is great value for money it seems like no money has been spent on it for years

Review 108:Location is very central and the staff are lovely

Review 109:Very old even our travel Plugs didnt fit ... Hotel was closed when arrived too ... Needs updating

Review 110:Location

Review 111:No milk in tea making facilities, decor is faded glory, some people mind that sorry off thing. Breakfast was very busy

Review 112:Location, price

Review 113:The location couldn't have been better.

Review 114:Very , very noisey area. Road sweepers in operation at 07.30. Bars clearing tables from street at midnight.

Review 115:best staff and good location

Review 116:Reception staffed at limited hours.

Review 117:Excellent position, next to Castillet, with old town behind and river in front. Comfortable. Helpful staff.

Review 118:probably the worst bed i ever slept in

Review 119:central location

Review 120:no air in the bathroom. Facing the street which was very noisy.

Review 121:The location was excellent. The staff was very agreeable and friendly and helpful.

Review 122:Location in old town. Large room. Tea making.

Review 123:Fabulous location, great views from the sweet balcony

Review 124:Great location and quiet room at rear of building

Review 125:Bathrooms would do with a make over; lighting is not comfortable.

Review 126:Location, spacious room and people working there.

Review 127:The woman at the reception was cariño snd nice

Review 128:Needs updating

Review 129:No hairdryer in our room.

Review 130:Location is excellent for getting around centre.

Review 131:Industrial noise from 6am onwards, thin windows made it imposdible to sleep

Review 132:Friendly

Review 133:Lovely place
