Reviews for Plas Derwen

Review 1:TV a bit small. Would have liked wine glasses in room.

Review 2:Size of the room and use of a sofa. Having use of bath and shower. Room away from the pub. Nice and warm.

Review 3:Breakfast service was poor: we inadvertently occupied a table which had already been used and no attempt was made to re-lay. We lacked side plates, condiments and preserves so sourced from nearby tables! Service was very slow. Food quality was good but one breakfast had about a tablespoon of free oil in which everything was floating. We swapped plates after failing to attract the attention of staff to make complaint. Large hole in dining room carpet. Decor a bit 1980's and in need of refreshment. Nowhere to hang clothes or put toiletries in spacious en-suite

Review 4:Location and reception staff.

Review 5:Such a friendly welcome and everyone was very helpful at all times. Our rooms were in the single storey building at the rear of the main public house and they were just enormous. Great menu too - we dined in the restaurant every night to take full advantage.

Review 6:I was completely comfortable. The staff went out of their way to be welcoming and helpful. The dinner and breakfast were excellent. It was very quiet, yet convenient. Probably too far from town to walk.

Review 7:The bedroom was a little tired and the beds well worn and very soggy. The bathroom was very tired and in need of refurbishment. It was fitted out for disabled which never lends itself to looking well designed.

Review 8:The manager and staff made us very welcome. Beer, wine and food was excellent. Dinner and breakfast cooked and presented to a very high standard, better than I have received in so-called 4 star hotels. Room was clean and well heated.

Review 9:Wanted to stay longer and explore the area.

Review 10:The staff were fantastic and after realising I'd be leaving before breakfast was due to be served went and got me a couple of boxes of cereal and a jug of milk. They were really lovely in the reception - made me me feel very welcome.

Review 11:Great overall, one small negative that the bath / shower gel was 'locked in' up high so you couldn't reach it when lying in the bath!

Review 12:Wonderful breakfast and great bar area

Review 13:The dark bathroom in our room and only a bath even though there was a handheld shower a stand in shower would have been nice

Review 14:The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. Nice comfy beds.

Review 15:The staff were excellent helpful and informative . The rooms were lovely plenty of room . Parking easy and safe . The food was wonderful , huge menu and if a vegetarian plenty of choice .

Review 16:TV was too small for the room size.

Review 17:Excellent sized room...lots of space. Comfortable bar area in the hotel Excellent breakfast options Excellent evening meal options - food was beautiful.

Review 18:The hotel was quite run down and we object to toilet rolls not onholders (unhygienic), radiators not professionally fitted (fastened withclips and wire to wall) and photos did not look anything like the roomwe were placed in. This places needs some money spending on it!

Review 19:Location to town centre was good

Review 20:no safe. mirror in bathroom useless for shaving (ceiling light is behind) so effectively in dark. very stuffy due to sun shining onto room length windows. tiny ventilation. blinds should be fully closed during the day in sunny weather. bathroom mirror should be cleaned properly - I like Arsenal but when the mirror steams up the name appears clearly in the glass. bacon at breakfast should be fried or grilled, not put on the griddle. Tasted like last night's steak, burnt as well. 9am breakfast finish is a bit early, I feel.

Review 21:big room. great power for the bath and shower. towels. bed. The pub.

Review 22:Not a thing.

Review 23:The Whole Experience. The Staff were exceptional in their help. attitude and friendliness. One of the best Hotels have stayed in for a long time.

Review 24:Room away from main building large and comfortable fine for privacy and convenience but a problem in bad weather.

Review 25:Proudly Welsh and very welcoming. Food locally sourced & well cooked & presented. had eaten here before, would eat and stay here again.

Review 26:Cleaner obviously only cleaned 'obvious' places in room. Behind bed and other furniture was thick with dust/dirt.

Review 27:Size of room, comfort of bed. Friendliness of staff and quality of breakfast.

Review 28:Loud live music from bar area could be heard very, very clearly in hotel room, luckily it didn't go on after 11pm. Location on busy main road

Review 29:Friendly, helpful staff

Review 30:As we were visiting locally, we thought the 9 a.m. finish for breakfast a little early. 10 a.m. would have been better

Review 31:The freshly cooked and well served breakfast was far superior to the normal buffet style. The coffee was hot and strong-lovely.

Review 32:The only thing i thought could have been better is the service of food. There was always quite a wait for food to be served. The prices of the eveninh meals were quite expensive, and also alcoholic drinks were quite pricey.

Review 33:Ataff

Review 34:Room lovely but very warm with only a little respite from one window which opened at the bottom a little way

Review 35:Lovely food happy staff and nice big room and hotel in nice surroundings

Review 36:there was no shampoo in the bathroom, as I did not bring my own had to use ordinary soap would have been nice for this little extra to be added.

Review 37:we enjoyed our meals and the room was very comfortable, parking was good and nearby.

Review 38:Accomodation, clean, well furnished, very comfortable. Dinner menu offered a good range and the chosen meals were well presented and of good quality.

Review 39:I did say at the time I was amazed that the ensuite had a lock on the door !!you share a bed you share a bathroom. My husband has Alzheimer's & locked himself in the bathroom ! Yet the Tom door was not lockable ... He could have got out & wandered off !

Review 40:It's a bit far to walk from the city centre and you walk on the main road which is quite noisy

Review 41:Very big room, the restaurant and pub (both breakfast and dinner) food and design. It's a complex of rooms in ground level not the same building as the restaurant so it's quiet. Walking distance from the train station.

Review 42:Room with only a velux (roof)window. On my own I couldn't have opened/shut either window or blind.

Review 43:Huge room, parking good, food and service excellent.

Review 44:The room was very tired with paint chipping off the door and walls, broken blinds. Bathroom was not wonderfully clean and black mould around the bath wasn't nice. Bed was lumpy with springs which had seen better days. Expected more for a 4 star and the price paid.

Review 45:Loved the location as I needed to travel on a very early train and I could walk to the station as the car park is very small. Room service was fantastic and they we more than happy to make a bespoke meal for me.

Review 46:Nothing was perfect for what I needed

Review 47:Had a gorgeous roo got updated to family room kindly by a staff member. Very comfortable and great view of the Blorenge. Great breakfast too and staff very attentive and accomodating

Review 48:The shower curtain didn't fit into the tub very well, and the phone hadn't been dusted in a while.

Review 49:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and included several options. We enjoyed a drink at the cozy bar. Parking was very near the room.

Review 50:l have stayed at Plasderwen for the last 4 years in May due to entering a cycling event nearby. Plasderwen never fails to deliver. Great place, good food, relaxed atmosphere, excellent staff who deserve all the recognition for their hard work and making sure the customers are happy thanks again..

Review 51:No TV for our 2 night stay, & no offer of any kind of compensation. Made worse by the wi-fi in room being virtually nil.

Review 52:Convenience of accommodation being separate from the pub - easy access for meals/drinks but very quiet. Most of staff very helpful and polite. Food excellent.

Review 53:Some of the decor was a little worn and we only had a skylite in the room so sadly no views .

Review 54:From the time we arrived it was just a comfy little break which we needed. The staff were very attentive and all are meals were wonderful which went very well with a lovely selection of drinks from the bar.

Review 55:Very poor mobile network Draught from window, would be problem in winter. Some room furnishings need replacing such as stained chair

Review 56:Friendly staff, good food and clean room

Review 57:Telly a bit small (couldn't read what was on there) and soap out of reach if you were bathing - OK for someone showering, but these are minute details in an otherwise perfect break.

Review 58:Sitting in the conservatory, eating wonderful food and looking at the super garden. We also appreciated the dedication and insightfulness of the staff.

Review 59:Seemed to be a lack of management presence and supervision. For example, tables in lounge left dirty after previous occupants. Evening meal not up to expectation.

Review 60:Comfortable bed.

Review 61:The receptionist welcomed us, then decided to make a coffee for another guest so I waited and waited for my key and registration. (just wrong) While a waitress watched the receptionist make the coffee. I am sure the waitress could be trained to make coffee.

Review 62:The bed comfort. Position. Size of room. Good hot shower. Breakfast.

Review 63:Nothing.

Review 64:The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were warm, bright and clean. The food was well-cooked, hot and tasty. We were made to feel very welcome.

Review 65:No negatives to report.

Review 66:We like the location. The hotel is clean, and comfortable. Staff very friendly and obliging. Food good and reasonably priced.

Review 67:only drawback in any of these older establishments is the stairs and no lift. however ther are rooms on the ground floor level in newer buildings so don't let this put you off.

Review 68:We were looking to stay in authentic pub/B&B accomodation so stayed in the older part of the original hotel, which suited us. The staff were very helpful and pleased to assist in any way possible. Food and bar service and quality were great during our stay.We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to other travellers in Wales.

Review 69:I thought the bathroom was tired & the décor could do with refreshing. it would be useful to have a light above the mirror in either the bathroom or the bedroom.

Review 70:The room was very light airy. The bed was very comfortable. The staff were pleasant & very helpful. The food was good & the conservatory where we ate was very nice

Review 71:Hotel & room cold. Staff unhelpful & unwilling to turn heating timer on. No help with taking bags to room.Heating would not turn down overnight so room too hot. We have stayed at this hotel 3 times and it is tattier each time - last stay for us.

Review 72:Convenient location. The view.

Review 73:Did not get made welcome didnt eat there at night as nothing suitable on.menu breakfast was awful the waiter was miserable didn't talk looked untidy all staff need a shake up or youll loose all your business

Review 74:Room was ok but nothing special

Review 75:heating was not on for our arrival but soon resolved although we were chilly to start with. room was walled with glass so felt a bit like a goldfish bowl.

Review 76:Location just off the main road was good. bed was comfortable. restaurant and bar areas welcoming.

Review 77:Very poor Wi-Fi Very poor mobile signal Room phone not working Heating not working Room dirty Bed uncomfortable The staff knew about the above problems and neglected to inform me

Review 78:The room was too warm. There was no air conditioning (not unusual in the UK), but the windows did not open so there was no way to cool the room.

Review 79:The staff was wonderful. Breakfast was provided and was very good. We ate dinner one night, and it was delicious.

Review 80:Good food in the restaurant and good ales in the bar, all at very reasonable prices. Location close enough to town to avail yourself of the facilities, yet far enough out of the centre to get a quiet nights sleep.

Review 81:The bathroom had insufficient storage space (just one little shelf above the sink) but was plenty big enough for this to have been incorporated. No shower cap. The mattress was in need of replacement as you could feel the springs. There was no food whatsoever served after 8pm on Sunday evening so we had to go into the town. This felt unacceptable for a hotel. Our bill had no receipts attached to it and an extra item had been added which was not ours and an insufficient explanation was given that 'the system sometimes adds on items that you haven't had' !!! When I further questioned this explanation I was told that 'it sometimes adds things on from the day before'. I didn't question further as clearly there was no logical explanation for the extra £12 that had been added to our bill. The assistant went off to check the receipts but never produced them and it felt like something was being covered over. This left us feeling concerned that had we not bothered to check the bill that we could have paid too much and they should have provided receipts for all additional items purchased, which they didn't. The waiter service at breakfast was lacking insomuch as they didn't remove the dirty plates before delivering the main course although it was clear there was hardly room to put the plates on the table! I asked for my boiled eggs to be not too runny and they arrived 'hard boiled'. my husband ordered poached eggs which were also hard boiled.

Review 82:the bedroom was large. Good parking. Good shower. Pleasant staff.

Review 83:The bed was quite hard and the chair in the room was uncomfortable.

Review 84:The breakfast was excellent, the location was good and the room was quite large. The wi-fi was very good.

Review 85:Good rooms, excellent food prepared for each individual rather than the cook in a bag alternative offered by many chain pub/restaurants and considerate service.

Review 86:Room needed refurb especially bathroom though shower is brilliant! Bed squeaked but otherwise comfy Breakfast choice of eggs benedict awful! Muffin stale sauce bright yellow so not freshly made and salmon poor quality!

Review 87:Very spacious room Good access at all times Near to Abergavenny centre Friendly helpful staff

Review 88:No phone signal, but maybe that's EE...?

Review 89:Nice comfortable bedroom and big bathroom. Very pleasant restaurant serving good quality food at competitive prices. Handy location right next to the major A-roads.

Review 90:It would be helpful, from a health and safely point of view, to have grab rails by the bath. There was occasional train noise in the annex but no road noise.

Review 91:Separate and purpose built twin bedded accommodation with adjacent parking. Varied breakfast menu well cooked and well presented. Excellent, helpful staff. Instant free wifi, even in the annex rooms.

Review 92:The bathroom in the room was very grotty and badly in need of an upgrade. There was no powerpoint close to the mirror to plug the hairdryer in (or at least I couldn't find one!)

Review 93:The room (apart from the bathroom) was spacious and modern, staff were helpful and breakfast was very nice

Review 94:nothing to dislike

Review 95:The staff are so helpful can't do enough the room was big and comfortable we stayed in room 3 the location was excellent for the town and train not far to walk would definitely go back again

Review 96:We didn't book a room in the restaurant and so we walked into town for a meal. We could not pick up wi-fi in our room.

Review 97:We liked the room and the fact that we were in walking distance of the town. We enjoyed our breakfast.

Review 98:We would not go again if we had to have room 8. It had no windows, just a velux very high up and I doubt if small guests could have operated it. It was gloomy and stuffy. Had to have light on all the time. Plenty of mirrors but not one with a light nearby so making up/ shaving was difficult. We were shown other rooms by cleaning staff the next day and they were all light and totally different.

Review 99:good location, very good breakfast and friendly staff.

Review 100:Receptionist was unhelpful and surly considering it was her trying to book me in under wrong name despite being shown on line paper work. Remaining staff friendly and attentive. No sign of home style food ,meals were industrial based on profit maximisation.Breakfast ingredients good ruined by griddle cooking of bacon again no home style touch. Bar had good range of beer and lager and comfortable surroundings.

Review 101:Good parking. Excellent size room bath room clean and functional. Located away from town centre within reasonable walking distance ....in dry!

Review 102:Last orders was at 10.30 even though we were staying here. The outside of the building was looking a bit jaded - it could have done with a make-over.

Review 103:Food & wine was excellent value and flavour.

Review 104:Could have been cleaner in the shower, build up of grime in the hinges. Decor was a bit tired especially in the eating area of the hotel.

Review 105:The nice big room and good size bed.

Review 106:Beautiful old hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Clean. Food was great. This must have been a very grand hotel in the day. A wonderful experience. We would describe the hotel as a very grand old lady that is getting a little tired but still has plenty to give.

Review 107:Nothing!

Review 108:From the moment we walked in the staff were very attentive to us and the other guests nothing was to much for them, they even accommodated us for breakfast when it was due to finish when we arrived. And it was a stunning breakfast especially the sausages!! Will stay again.

Review 109:We loved the location as it was perfect for our stay. The rooms are exceptionally clean and comfortable.

Review 110:the beds we had were far to bouncy.

Review 111:The location for our onward movements

Review 112:Great value for money. All the staff were nice people.

Review 113:Nothing bad to say about this place

Review 114:Nice relaxing weekend peacefull staff great this was our 3rd time we stayed here and we will be back

Review 115:It was easy to book and we were shown to our room by a member of staff.

Review 116:Nothing at all

Review 117:The food

Review 118:We stayed in the outer building rooms which were very large and of a high standard - Fantastic stay!

Review 119:We had a lovely big room , restaurant was excellent

Review 120:Bedroom a little on the small side.

Review 121:Friendly staff and good food.

Review 122:Very soft small twin beds.

Review 123:Good for train station. Staff very helpful and food good.

Review 124:the hotel was lovely, every member of staff was so friendly and welcoming

Review 125:no porridge at breakfast

Review 126:excellent food in the restaurant

Review 127:Nothing was too much trouble. They were happy to let us check in early as the room was ready. Great atmosphere and truly delicious food.

Review 128:The staff were very friendly and the breakfasts were delicious.

Review 129:Quiet location. Large room. Good breakfast.

Review 130:Wonderful dinner and breakfast, staff was great!
