Reviews for Self-service Piano Hostel
Review 1:During wintertime it was quite cold in the kitchen, so not cozy to sit in. And that's kind of the only room to sit together. Bathroom a bit unhandy to but towel, new clothes and stuff somewhere besides the floor - which would probably get wet as there is only a curtain seperating shower and toilet.
Review 2:The location was just perfect, only a few minutes away from city centre and Brygge. The shelves and lockers really helped keeping the place tidy. And a BIG plus was the heated floor in the bathroom!!
Review 3:No reception available, making it difficult for travellers who came before check-in time to put their luggages/bags
Review 4:Relatively clean room and toilets.
Review 5:The first impression, I have ro admit, was a bit spooky. But the room was quite nice with a litle kitchen and fridge. The beds were simple but OK. If two want to take a shower, I speak about one after the other..., you have to give it some time to reheat the water for the second shower. Parking is o.k. but you have to pay for it (public parking) and the police is quite active. I stayed five days and I hadn't any problems because I came late and left at about 9.00 am. It was the cheapest hotel I could find in Bergen and I would take it again. Swing Dancers behold: Social dance nights are on Thursdays just around the corner!
Review 6:Did not get my bed and door code information earlier on in the email, had to call up the number when i reached there (problem for a international traveller having no local number)
Review 7:The staff on the phone was very friendly (because it is a self service hostel), bathrooms and toilets equivalent to a 3 star hotel, amazing wifi and kitchen facilities, got a free late check out and the manager was very polite(even though i had asked only to store my bags)
Review 8:The dishes were left dirty. Could have been because we checked in earlier than we had agreed.
Review 9:I liked the room a lot, beds were comfortable and bathroom was very clean. My friend and I arrived earlier than check in time. We also failed to notice that we'd need to check in via phone and didn't have Norwegian number or roaming. However, I contacted the staff through Skype and then e-mail. They were very friendly and let us check in earlier than we had agreed. There was an issue with our credit card as well and one of the staff members came by, we figured it all out and paid in cash without any further complications.
Review 10:All facilities in one, location in the center of town, cleanliness, helpfull and kind stuff, self-service - own key, own entrance, feeling like I´m at home .)
Review 11:No one at the reception and we did not receive any email on how to self-checkin. Had to call the owner of the property
Review 12:Cheap hostel in bergen with good location and high speed internet
Review 13:Heater in room not working, shower gel provided was finished. There was some anxiety about not receiving the email with the hostel access code until a few hours before our afternoon flight- might pose a problem for travellers who have no internet access, with morning flights
Review 14:Well equipped budget room with kitchenette, utensils and crockery, hairdryer in bathroom, towels. Good location and value for money
Review 15:No laundry facilities, cooking and shower/toilet facilities in dorm area would be stretched if fully booked
Review 16:Important: If you are going here make sure that you call the owner/reception in advance as there is no reception. Often the bunk/room allocation and instructions of how to get in are not emailed out until the day of arrival and sometimes not even then! Other than that, clean and relatively secure hostel with comfy beds
Review 17:The light from the exit sign was in my eyes when I was trying to sleep. It's not a big deal though!
Review 18:Loved this place so much! Just a few minutes from the train station, if a self service apartment so they email you the door code. It's small which made getting to know everyone really easy, close to town. Had everything in the kitchen you will need
Review 19:The lack of staff or reception makes the whole place cold and moody. It will be nice to have instructions on the wall on how to operate the stove.
Review 20:The bathroom is big and warm.
Review 21:We never received the email with the instructions for the check in. It was difficult to get in contact with the hostel since there wasn't a physical reception.
Review 22:Bunkbeds made too much noise and they felt unstable. Lacked coziness, there was not really a shared livingroom, only tables next to the kitchen counter where you could eat (but not a couch or something where you could just relax). Lack of sunlight.
Review 23:Fully equipped kitchen
Review 24:But there is no parking place, and the bed quality is very poor. The whole building is not very clean.
Review 25:The location of the apartment hostel is fine. The room is staffed with basic needs for making drinks and cooking.
Review 26:Very relaxed security. Only a pin code to get in, which would be easy to sneak people in/get your valuables stolen.
Review 27:Great hostel! Very small, but this makes it easier to get to know everyone. Nice beds, good kitchen. Seems more like a home, than a hostel.
Review 28:Almost too big rooms (10 and 12 beds), apart the kitchen with two tables and the two toilets no place to share life. Was really okay for one night though!
Review 29:Good location and clean rooms. Even there was no reception, everything worked out fine.
Review 30:No railing on the narrow top bunk bed. Slept uneasy. Totally inadequate bathroom facilities - had to wait 25 mins (yep, I timed it) in morning to use bathroom! Communal seating area is also inadequate for number of guests. Overall, not the best first impression of Norway.
Review 31:Location is quite good.
Review 32:I think I don't like shared dorm style rooms. Really irritating guests and loud snoring. I think it's strange the door code is sent the day of. Many people do not have an internet connection so receiving the email could have been troublesome if I hadn't bought a sim card. Would have been nice to have a dry place to set my clothes in the shower. Just a small shelf off of the floor would be perfect.
Review 33:Very cheap decent location, door code to come and go as you please means no key to lose. Two bathrooms were helpful for many people.
Review 34:I loathed paying as much as I did for the place but it may not be fair to call it expensive exactly, given the area. Front desk fellow was very blunt and aloof. Could just be a Norwegian thing, it was the only hostel I stayed in in the country.
Review 35:Cheap as you're likely to find in Bergen. Easy location near the station and a very short walk to the harbour. Self check-in was very straightforward and shouldn't be dreaded.
Review 36:Close to train station, convenient, but no staff on-site. You will be receive a code to get in. Cramped quarters...not much room to move. Only two bathrooms (shower-toilet) for twenty people.
Review 37:Location. Just a 4-min walk from the train station and major attractions are in proximity. Staff was helpful. The kitchen basically has everything you'll need to cook.
Review 38:Cost as much as a good hotel. Prices are through the ceiling. We stayed there because all hotels and air b&bs were full. Private rooms at a hostel should not be this expensive.
Review 39:Location, privacy, kitchen.
Review 40:You get a bed crammed into the smallest space possible with an essentially non-existent common area. A single shower and 2 single toilets in the dormitories for 15 people. To top it off, the room was stiffling and right next to a bar, so roast or deal with the noise, I say avoid at all costs.
Review 41:No dishwasher in the kitchen, shower is in the same room as toilet, which limits the throughput - toilet is unavailable is someone is showering.
Review 42:There is just one small room besides of dormitories, which brings people together. We had a nice evening and kept chatting till early morning.
Review 43:If you don't check your e-mail after booking, you might miss the fact that there is no staff by the check-in (actually no check-in whatsoever...anyone could walk in) and might stand behind the door forever. Unless some other travellers let you in, which at the same time doesn't feel very safe.. especially if there are no lockers in the rooms. Otherwise definitely good value for the money!
Review 44:Good location
Review 45:Did not get given the door code upon arrival, struggled to get in. Did not get given a bed number either. Reception very unreliable, not there half the time. Windows have no/ very little curtains, which unless you can sleep in daylight ( i discovered i can in fact) will definatley be a problem.
Review 46:Nice atmosphere inside, very open and friendly with the guests. Once you have the door code this works well as you can get in and out easily at any time. Communal fridge is good.
Review 47:Without staff things become very difficult. I booked online and was promised an email that would give me the enterance code as well as my bed number. I waited and waited until I was in front of the door with no code, so I emailed the address on the door, and received a very snotty reply some time later. My card was blocked and the post sought me out for payment, which was no issue, however I paid in cash and requested a receipt, I was promised one by email, which came after I sent three more emails without response. The management is awful.
Review 48:The location was decent.
Review 49:Wifi wasn't always good. The curtains in front of the windows are to small, so there is a lot of light in the summer.
Review 50:I like the fact that there is no reception. You're just staying in a flat with other travellers. It was clean, basic kitchen, two showers and toilets.
Review 51:Two shower rooms with toilet -> if the showers are blocked, you can't use the toilet/ loud air con/ dirt in the corners of the rooms and especially under the beds/ a bit dark because the windows are small
Review 52:Super good located near train station and city/ comfortable bed/ sheets included/ bright and large shower rooms/ friendly owner
Review 53:It was dirty and myself and many others did not receive information about what bed we would stay in and which room. Therefore there was lots of confusion, resulting in people having to chnage beds and look for anger hostel at 1am. The hot water ran out. It has a very sterile unfriendly atmosphere. It is a rip off for the price. One of the worse hostels I have ever been to
Review 54:Wifi
Review 55:Overall there wasn't any bad experience. However, the bed linen look old but they were clean.
Review 56:Very good value for money for an expensive city. The Location was great. In fact that was what made the hostel more attractive. The hostel was well equipped with self catering facilities. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I will definitely recommend it.
Review 57:No reception and a lot of people rocked up who we had to help (number on the front door is never answered), a lot of people seemed to know the code to get inside so during the night random people would be sleeping on the floors or in the kitchen, very disorganised place!
Review 58:Close to the station, small so everyone got to know each other
Review 59:The bed, while being clean, was not very long enough ( although I am just 5' 10" ) and was creaky every time one turned on one's side. Otherwise, sheets were clean and fresh and one could have a sound sleep.
Review 60:Spick and span facilities for bed and shower. Being a hostel, I was a little worried about the cleanliness, but I was impressed by the overall cleanliness in the hostel. The toilets were absolutely spick and span with hot water facilities etc .
Review 61:Personnel is there like 7 hours a day, he told me when arriving about 3 words, roommates had the same expirience. There is basically no space to chill out, just bed or small kuitchen + other hostels in town are cheaper and better.
Review 62:Self check-in was a mess! At least two other couples we met were locked out from the hostel. Facilitilies in the room are old, the sqeaky bed is extremely annoying as well. Very poor experience indeed.
Review 63:Great location, just 5 minutes from the train station
Review 64:No communal area or laundry or bar or cafe, actually all there is is a bed in a dorm, put your own sheets on, no towel, kitchen area for cooking and toilet/shower room, very expensive
Review 65:Quite, got a great night sleep
Review 66:Not much sound-proofing between the sleeping quarters and the dining area means that one can basically hear everything everywhere. Not a huge problem though. Some hooks in the bathroom would be nice.
Review 67:Great location just a couple blocks from Fløibanen and the touristy centre. Good price and comfort. Clean and fresh. Renovated bathroom with heated floors. Interesting concept being unmanned, but the lack of staff made the place feel more homely -like I was eating at a friends apartment, not a hostel.
Review 68:The lack of staff, whilst keeping the prices down, felt odd. It relies on other hostellers helping new guests out when they arrive.
Review 69:'cheapest' place to stay in Bergen. Big clean rooms, kitchen, bathrooms had underfloor heating :)
Review 70:As for comfort and looks, it is probably what one should expect to get in Bergen for this price... but otherwise not great at all. There were 3 of us, and the room was so tiny that we could not even open our suitcases without covering the entire floor. And that is with a bunker bed. Hot water was limited, so 2 or 3 people couldn't take a shower following one another. They had to wait. The shower was also tiny, very hard to wash yourself in it. And the door handle was not bolted to the door, it kept falling off.
Review 71:The best feature of this hostel is the location. It's a 5-minute walk from the train station and a 10 minute walk from the bus station. The center of Bergen, and Bryggen, are also about 10 minutes away. Free wi-fi is of course a plus as well. The good part was that there was kitchenware, and a really fast teapot. And a refrigerator. And the place was clean.
Review 72:There isn't a reception and the hostel didn't email us the pin code to unlock the door. Everyone who arrived was confused by the lack of reception. There were no real windows looking outside and when the rooms filled up the entire place was humid and smelly.
Review 73:Location was great & easy to get to.
Review 74:Only two bathrooms for around 16-20 beds, no reception, seems unsafe, price too high for value
Review 75:Good localization, all necessary equipment, good for short stay,
Review 76:Very cramped
Review 77:Could check self in in middle of night... No staff at hostel. Good location. Relatively low cost hostel... Features to match. Would use it again for quick stay.
Review 78:no reception, no password received before i find the hostel, bed is small and low, a fat man sleep beside me with heavy snoring with bad smell everyday, price is high , only 2 toilets for 20 people, so awful.
Review 79:other roommates are helpful , coz we need to help each other, just like going to the refugee camp.
Review 80:Walls between bedrooms and kitchen/hall were very thin. People stayed up till very late in the kitchen and I could clearly hear everything they talked about. There was no hot water in the bathroom.
Review 81:The location is okay - walking distance from the bus/train station and the main attractions.
Review 82:There is no locker to keep my back. It's quite uncomfortable when you need to leave something at the hostel when you are going out or even go to toilet.
Review 83:Nothing in particular, the TV was not working but didn't really need it.
Review 84:Location location location, but also the accommodation were nice, clean and very practical especially with the kitchen equipped with plates, pans, glass ect where you could cook small breakfast. The bathroom had a floor heating and I loved it.
Review 85:- dirty bathrooms - very noisy - tiny rooms for 8/10 people Go insted to the YMCA Hostel in Bergen, I stayed there the previous time and it is way better. L
Review 86:Location
Review 87:there are some crazy Norwegian peopla staying there as long term that treat the other poeple bad and agressive-like staring that those people, slamming the doors, so i felt unsafe there. The common space is very small and there is no space to hand around. The hostel has ants and some other bugs. I dont recommend anyone to stay there
Review 88:wifi is good, location is good
Review 89:Everyone in my room was woken up in the middle of the night by (what sounded like) one very loud drunk guy beating another. I only stayed one night, but I didn't exactly feel very welcomed-especially after hearing that right outside. Also didn't have a warm shower because of the number of people showering before me I guess.
Review 90:The room and facilities were adequate for the price, and the location was convenient/walkable to Bryggen and other tourist locations, etc.
Review 91:Pillow and duvet are dirty and should be changed or cleaned.
Review 92:Location is good and the hostel's lack of organisation (no email about check-in information etc.) makes a warm environment for the people staying there. You need to stick together!
Review 93:There is no reception and they sent me an e-mail with password of door code late so that we had to wait in front of the hostel. They asked us to call but since we didn't have Norway's phone number we couldn't call them.
Review 94:Clean kitchen, well-worked wifi
Review 95:Was difficult to locate the entrance. There was no sign to indicate the apartment at the gate. The waterflow in the bathroom sink was slow. The flatscreen TV that was listed in the facilities was not available for use.
Review 96:V convenient location to the train station and main attractions. Clean and comfy.
Review 97:There were creepy and weird guests. Not sure if they are guests or staffs but seem like guests. They were still there even after I have checked out from the hostel. Made me feel uneasy to be honest.
Review 98:The location
Review 99:Hot water was gone after sometime so we had to ration and even boil water because there were a few of us who took turn to use the shower and the hot water was gone after the 2nd or 3rd person finished showering
Review 100:Wifi was good, well-equipped kitchen, spacious room
Review 101:I think the instruction to the hostel should be informed earlier (a day earlier) The sink in the bathroom didn't drain the water. It was really cool that I wrote to the guy at late night and by the time I woke up in the morning he wrote me back but still when we left it still didn't work
Review 102:The location is really good. It is close to the fish market and the night bars zone. To the tourist information, the sea, fish market it only takes 10 mins. To the Bergen railway station, less than 10 mins. The room is in good condition, clean. The bed is good, sheet has been provided. The Internet is fast and stable. The heater works really well. The kitchen utensils are all there:)
Review 103:I didn't get an email with the entrance code before arriving even though I booked several days in advance. As a traveler without cell service it was hard to get into the location and I sat outside for a while.
Review 104:Great location. This is the main reason I would stay at this property again. The internet was also very good when I was there.
Review 105:the only hostel without front desk I have ever seen. Most new-comers get confused. Usually help is provided by those who have lived one night. Hence the atmosphere is so unique that when I came in the first night, I suspected that there is some psychological experiment going on.
Review 106:price is reasonably cheap considering the location of the hostel. Even though the house appears to be squeezed, but all necessary equipment are there.
Review 107:The hostel is on a noisy street, but thankfully, the noise was not so loud inside. There was around six people accommodated during my stay and it was okay, but I can imagine, thah with the whole capacity filled, the place would be awfully crowded. The e-mail with the code could have arrived earlier - for those who do not have internet connection in their mobile phones, this is a bit unconvenient. I also understand the need for a camera in the kitchen, but I did not feel very well with big brother over my shoulder.
Review 108:The hostel is a good choice if you want to save some money, it is very clean, the bed sheets are clean and beds comfortable. For one or two nights in Bergen, I think it's very good.
Review 109:very dirty... The pillow and blanket are super old and yellow, the floor dirty and I did not get the promised code in advance. Had to call when I got there.
Review 110:-Problems with the electricity -No reception, you can have a bad time if you get there late night
Review 111:-Location, close to everything (even tough Bergen is not that big) -Heating on the bathrooms floor -Kitchen, so you can save some money in Norway -Hair dryer, mosts hostels don't have it
Review 112:Lack of kitchen stuffs (only 2 forks for 3 people for exemple), lack of chair (only one), lack of light.
Review 113:Perfect geographic situation of the room : 3 min by walk from the central station and 5 min from the city center. Wifi works correctly.
Review 114:It is run without anyone doing registration at present (though that may change). I liked that idea. Everything was on the honor system and people honored it!
Review 115:Since this hostel has no on site reception, I was told the building entrance pin code will be sent to me by email before check in time of day of arrival and that my bed will be labeled with my name. I arrived at the hostel and I had no pin to enter the building on my email, I had to use my roaming to call the owner
Review 116:Loved the heating in the floor of the bathrooms, however that is a given in norway, every accommodation would have that.
Review 117:When I stayed, there was only 3 people including me so there was no problem at all, however it is a very small place and I counted about 20-30 beds. I can see that if the place is full, it won't be as pleasant as it was to me, just to mention it has only two bathrooms. Second thing is, not less important nonetheless, the confirmation email I got said I would receive my entrance code (to enter the house) via email as well, so I was confident. However I received nothing. If it wasn't because of a friend I have there in Norway who called them asking for the code it would have been a pain to get in as I don't have a phone line there in Norway.
Review 118:This hostel's location is great, by walking it is just a few minutes away of very interesting tourist points. The kitchen is good and bathropms are well-equipped.
Review 119:There is a crazy lady(another guest) ask someone sign for her...dancing and singing at night... Door is not easy to close
Review 120:Bed,location,easy to know new friend!
Review 121:The cleaning man was not really good at cleaning but he was quite friendly when came in. He should be more serious about cleaning. Because it is a small place and it doesn't take more than 20 min to clean the whole place properly. Some of the place are full of dust, specially under the bed and the hair dryer was really dustly. I hope that the cleaning man does a better job i the future. Otherwise i really enjoyed my stay.
Review 122:I just had wonderful time together with the guest who were staying there. If i have to choose accomodation in Bergen, it will always be Piano Hostel. Perfekt place to meet nice people. You will never feels alone there, even if you are travelling alone. I really had a great time.
Review 123:The hostel is quite small, and so it can be quite noisy for the people in the rooms if there are people talking in the kitchen. Also, the lack of staff made it quite dirty very fast - not only people weren't cleaning after them in the kitchen (that is understandable and it happens in any hostel) but the rooms and bathrooms were quite dirty.
Review 124:Location was excellent, just a few minutes walking from Bryggen and the Fish Market. The idea of a self-service hostel is very good, and it works better than I expected!
Review 125:There is a window between the sleeping room and the common space which doesn't have a courtain. Seeing that the light stays on the entire night I had light shining in my face the entire night. (And not just a bit...)
Review 126:Location Clean sheets
Review 127:It's noise when people are talking in the common area, even you are inside the room, you can hear clearly what they are talking. It's not hot water for shower at all, almost cold water
Review 128:The kitchen is very nice Location is perfect, near the train station
Review 129:Instructions for arrival were sent much too late - 13.34 on day of arrival. We did not receive them and found the hostel impossible to get into, and had to make an expensive international phone call to find out how to get in. There is no reception.
Review 130:Relatively cheap for Norway.
Review 131:No code received as it should be on email or sms, I was on the frontdoor calling several times to ask for it to be able to get in, late inthe evening.
Review 132:Lack of lockers within the hostel was quite concerning. Luggage needed to be stored at the train station lockers during the day. Bathrooms need a good clean. The shower floors are particularly grimy. Staff did not send the booking code until I contacted them via text message (despite being told they would send the details on their own initiative). Travellers without phone access will have a very difficult time gaining entry due to this.
Review 133:Excellent location, just around the corner from the station. Wi-fi was in good condition. Beds were quite comfortable.
Review 134:The check in process is hit and miss... This hostel advertises as a self check in venue, however I never received confirmation of booking or entry code! Naturally this lead to much confusion once I arrived.
Review 135:Convenient location. Nice apartment vibe to the place. Heated floors.
Review 136:The frontdoor had a problem so difficult to close. I had not been aware that there was no reception there
Review 137:The price and the wifi was very good. Kitchen and bathrooms ok.
