Reviews for The Old Cannon Brewery

Review 1:The price was quite high but I suppose it's quite normal for the area. I also found the place hard to find but I did arrive when it was dark and I've never been in the area before (take a map or phone with Google maps with you)

Review 2:Their own brewed ales on tap were fantastic, as were their own signature sausages at breakfast! The room was in a separate building from their brewery pub so it was very quiet and homely.

Review 3:The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, everything had been thought of and the breakfast was fantastic. The Old Cannon Brewery is a lovely place to stay, wonderfully quiet, perfect distance from town and I can definitely recommend.

Review 4:N/A

Review 5:Very friendly and helpful staff. Secure parking, excellent location - great beer and food. Had a nice bottle of porter and snacks waiting for us in the room - free of charge - nice touch.Breakfast fantastic.Room very clean and quiet.Super place - will stay again

Review 6:No complaints at all.

Review 7:Friendly and welcoming without being intrusive, close to town centre but in a quiet spot, fresh milk provided for the room in a natty flask, breakfast up to 12.00, don't have to leave until 12.00. Would definitely stay again.

Review 8:Staff were excellent , great welcome and looked after throughout. Room 'compact' ,fine for one night may have needed more room if saying longer or if there was two of us.

Review 9:the mattresses on the beds need upgrading we had 3 rooms for our group of 6 people. The orange mould in the shower cubicle and the black mould on the ceiling in the shower room no 7 let the otherwise very pleasant and well decorated room down.

Review 10:The location was great and the micro brewery and bistro were also great. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We all enjoyed the lovely food selection in the bistro for lunch and the fab breakfast as well as the late check out time from the room of 12.00 noon. we would certainly come back again.

Review 11:The hotel and staff were very friendly and efficient, good service, room a little cramped but enough for a couple of nights, very clean no complaints.

Review 12:The wifi was very limited in the room to be able to connect and work.

Review 13:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Love the beer you brew and left in the room, thank you!

Review 14:Nothing

Review 15:Bed very comfortable. Very good location, within easy walking distance of Bury. Great staff. Perfect for a business stop over plus parking, thats a first in a city centre!

Review 16:The bar restaurant was so good we didn't go anywhere else. The staff were friendly helpful and willing to spend time with you. The relaxed atmosphere and approach was great Breakfast til midday - great!

Review 17:The wifi didn't work most of the time and the gates did not open early enough to get my car out of the parking lot in time for work.

Review 18:The complimentary breakfast was delicious and my room came with a free beer as well. The garden area is lovely too.

Review 19:Staff really good especially the chap who greeted us on our arrival and who served us a brilliant breakfast, nothing too much for him. What a great asset to a business.

Review 20:A minor comment, but the tables seemed sticky, even though I saw them cleaned regularly.

Review 21:Nothing was too much trouble for the excellent and enthusiastic staff. Food and beer excellent and could not have been more local.

Review 22:Heavy footed guests in room above

Review 23:Friendly staff fSpacious room Excellent breakfast Good bar menu Fresh milk in room for tea and coffee Complimentary bottle of beer

Review 24:Shower grouting needs attention

Review 25:Staff were very friendly, breakfast excellent, beer & wine flights great idea. Sample beer in the room a nice tiuch.

Review 26:Greeted on arrival by a friendly welcoming chap. Liked the fresh milk in the room, the cheddars and beer ! Breakfast was good cooked to order not greasy, we were a party of 8 who all had different breakfasts and all were good and served by the same chap who greeted us, the day before, nothing was too much trouble for him and he was friendly and happy !

Review 27:milk for tea in room was provided in flasks and there were only a few flasks-suggest using UHT pots

Review 28:good location for town, great to be able to park in the courtyard

Review 29:Room was immediately adjacent to the cellar cooler fans which ran noisily all night

Review 30:Genuine friendly welcome. Comfortable, well appointed room. Great breakfast

Review 31:Fresh milk in the room (for tea and coffee) is a lovely idea, but it only works if the milk is kept cold and changed at least daily. We ended up with 'cottage cheese' after the first day. It was changed when we asked, but the same thing happened the next day, so we stopped using the tea and coffee facilities.

Review 32:Friendly staff, excellent food and brilliant beer. The Gunner's Daughter ale is fantastic!

Review 33:The carpet tiles just inside the door of our room needed a deep clean, or replacement.

Review 34:The helpfulness of the staff, and the quality of the locally sourced food, were outstanding. Beers from the in-house brewery were a bonus.

Review 35:Very badly insulated ceiling, enabling us to hear every movement and conversations from the people in the room above us.The earliest we could have breakfast was 8.30 ,we would have prefered a bit earlier so we could be on our way.

Review 36:Large room ,TV with lots of sky channels

Review 37:Prefer 'normal' sausages at breakfast but they have their own beer infused ones which, after having with mash the night before at dinner, I didn't really like. Maybe a normal sausage would be preferable.

Review 38:The food and the bar. Excellent quality in both. Room large and well appointed and nice touch of beer and snack in room. I've stayed twice before and I'll do so again.

Review 39:Perfectly located for a rail traveller, exactly midway between station and town in a quiet residential neighbourhood. Super friendly staff, lovely food and beer. Nicely decorated room and comfortable bed.

Review 40:Wonderful place to stay with a 5/10 minute walk away from Bury St Edmunds centre with the beautiful Abbey gardens. Food and own brewed beer is amazing, staff are really friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

Review 41:Would be nice to have a soap dish in the shower.

Review 42:Excellent location, great to be able to park, staff friendly and helpful throughout our stay, good food and beer, comfortable bed, nice room, TV with all sports channels. No complaints.

Review 43:Only tiny issue for me was that the toast at breakfast was slightly burned!

Review 44:Nice friendly welcome. Well appointed clean room with Sky TV. Car parking on site. Good quality breakfast.

Review 45:Room 6 was very disappointing compared to the pub. Very small which isn't a problem if the details are good but first view was badly stained carpet. Shower grouting was very dirty or unfinished and bathroom floor was yuck. Very happy to pay £130 for a room but it needs to match expectations.

Review 46:Excellent breakfast, great pub decor and atmosphere

Review 47:The bed was slightly uncomfortable but that could be more personal preference.

Review 48:The staff were friendly and very accomodating. The rooms were clean and had everything you needed. The bar was very nice and friendly atmosphere.

Review 49:The noisy young couple above - lowered the overall experience of a reasonably nice - though relatively expensive - B&B.

Review 50:Location, breakfast, staff.

Review 51:My friend found it hard to sleep because of a thin wall between our room and the next; talking could be heard. It was a bit of a shame the teabags and milk were not replenished maybe it was just forgotten as the coffee and sugars had been ....

Review 52:The location was ideal with only about 5 mins walk to the centre of town. The accommodation was set apart from the pub which was good. There were a few parking spaces in the car park which we were lucky enough to get. There was a complimentary beer and snack in the room which was very welcoming! :-)

Review 53:Room ('Gunner's Daughter') was fairly small and pretty noisy with what sounded like exterior extractors or air-con units firing up regularly. Still, good value at the discounted price we paid but would've been quite disappointed if we had paid full rate.

Review 54:Excellent and very friendly staff. Very good bar/restaurant public areas. Lots of hot water. Excellent location in a very nice town.

Review 55:The soundproofing between rooms, the occupant upstairs was noisy and left an alarm ringing for 10 mins at 6am on a Saturday, whilst the behaviour of others cannot be prevented by the hotel the lack of soundproofing didn't help. The shower and cubicle were in need of updating they had black water marks and an ill fitting shower caddy/basket, but rest of bathroom was ok

Review 56:The quirkiness of the accommodation being at a microbrewery. Very helpful and friendly staff, good food. Nice room, wifi and Sky TV, nice touch having a bottle of ale and snack in the room

Review 57:Fresh, ,clean and tastefully decorated rooms. Complimentary Beer and nibbles, fresh milk from the staff, great meal and comfy beds. What more could one need. Instant free wifi. Great visit. Highly recommend.

Review 58:Room 4 should not be sold as double room very tight on space, the grouting on the tiles in the shower were all black and the walls paper thin . Extremely overpriced - was very disappointed

Review 59:Location & Staff

Review 60:The shower although hot and not bad pressure wise, let it down a little bit. The shower tray and tiles were a bit grubby and really in need if replacing.

Review 61:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Complimentary beer and snacks in the room was a nice touch. Breakfast choices were varied, I opted for eggs Benedict and it was really good! Bed was comfy and the room nice and bright. Great beer - you can get a 3 x 1/3 pint taster of 3 different beers... Needless to say all were really enjoyable.

Review 62:Excellent choice of food, fresh milk for tea and coffee in room instead of UHT sachets, availability of light meals in the evening as well as lunchtime.

Review 63:I love well run independent hotels like this, they make you realise how naff the big chains are. This hotel is brilliant. I'm glad I took the time to try it and I'll definitely use it in future.

Review 64:The large room was really comfortable and was well stocked with teas and coffees. The staff were really friendly. The breakfast was excellent from a quite varied menu. Everything I needed for my short stay was here.

Review 65:Carpet in our room tired and stained, what looked like blue putty marks all over shower, could have been tidied up a bit. We were in the room downstairs by the front door and restaurant which was surprisingly quiet, but has potential to be very noisy if other guests coming and going early.

Review 66:Lovely location and staff, room generally fine, quiet and with good facilities. Restaurant and pub are great, really good food and beer selection appreciated by my partner who's a brewer.

Review 67:Parking a bit tricky as most of it reserved for residents. No bottled water in room.

Review 68:Great location for seeing Bury St Edmunds, bed very comfy, and shower roomy and lots of hot water. Staff very friendly and courteous. Nice atmosphere in the bar with excellent beers.

Review 69:No food available on a Sunday evening. Booked it through booking .com at one price and ended up paying more than expected.

Review 70:The location was ideal, very close to the Old town and the room was large and comfortable.

Review 71:Expensive for the offer. Thin walls in bedroom so snoring couple next door could be heard clearly; rubber pillows, cold room with defective radiator; smelly drains in windowless bathroom. Long wait for breakfast in cold room and tables only set out with cutlery with no self selection for cereals etc. skimped on milk and toast.

Review 72:Was not overwhelmed by anything

Review 73:The restaurant was closed on a Sunday, but the owner prepared plates of food with us so that we didn't have to walk into town in appalling weather! It really felt like you were staying in a working brewery, which added character to the location.

Review 74:There was no desk in the room and the breakfast starts a bit late for business guests (7:30am). On this occasion I skipped the full breakfast and the kitchen kindly prepared a take-out sausage sandwich for me.

Review 75:The accommodation is close to the station, the staff make you feel very welcome and the pub and food are very good. An enjoyable overnight experience. Recommended.

Review 76:- Wifi does not reach room (biggest issue) - No fridge in the room (minor) - Shower a little bit tired (nit picking)

Review 77:- It's a brewery! Great Beer. - Comfortable big room and bed. - Free bottle of beer in the room - Warm rooms - Really central to bury and close to the train station - Great breakfast* * I arrived late (11) for breakfast after a long night out as I was in Bury for a birthday party. The manager simply came over and asked what I would like and I had a great breakfast cooked to order. Sausages are top notch, really good coffee (am a coffee snob) and freshly squeezed juice).

Review 78:Rooms next to the street can experience some noise.

Review 79:Great staff who accommodated requests without question and were always friendly. Comfortable room and bed. Spacious bathroom and shower. Parking. Free, reliable wi-fi. Good food, wines and beer with plenty of choice. Easy access to town and abbey.

Review 80:Nothing!

Review 81:great location with an easy walk into the centre of Bury St Edmonds or a short drive into the countryside. Lovely food & great beer. Good room and secure parking. I will definitely stay again.

Review 82:The bed was very uncomfortable and felt the B&B was over priced at £120 Menu only small selection of meals and were quite Expensive £13.95 for Cod and Chips. Shower had hair in it

Review 83:Room was cosy but a little small, Pub and Staff great very friendly. Food was lovely and great service nice touch leaving a bottle of room Themed Beer in you room.

Review 84:we were told that there would be no breakfast and we were fine with that as it was to give the staff a break. however, I do feel they could have replenished our milk and the tea bags . Also, if coming in late and using the side door, the key is very difficult to use and we spend about 10 mins in the cold trying to get in - no one was around either.

Review 85:the bed and location

Review 86:This is a gorgeous, very charming pub / bed and breakfast - I would have loved to see the ale making in action and have a tour but did not have time in my itineray for this. Very good room facilities, excellent hospitality from the staff. The breakfast was excellent. It's nice the pub is just a little off the centre of Bury St Edmunds lending to a quieter more peaceful location. I would stay here again for sure

Review 87:Perfectly located for my needs, very comfortable and well equipped room. Excellent beer, obviously, and very good food, with a really good breakfast. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I liked the fresh locally produced fruit juices at breakfast and the bottle of beer in my room on arrival, plus a thermos of fresh milk for making tea or coffee. Nice touches. I stayed in room 7 and on other reviews there have been complaints of the noise from the cooler outside the brewery, I didn't hear it. Also someone mentioned the emergency light in the room was too bright! Well when I sleep I close my eyes and that cured the problem! :)

Review 88:Our stay was just for one night to visit the Christmas Market and the town itself. Our view of our stay was the welcoming and helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Our evening meal was steak and ale pie - delicious, the other meal was fishcakes, again very tasty. The cooked breakfast on Saturday morning was brilliant, with good quality ingredients and served by a very cheerful waiter, come barman come helpful person!!!

Review 89:We loved being in the separate little building across the way from the bar and brasserie. The layout and decor of the accommodation, bar and brasserie was lovely. Location of the Old Cannon Brewery was perfect for sightseeing Bury. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 90:Had to put tv on at 1.30 in morning to try and drown noise of someone snoring next room. Soundproofing non existent. advised staff of this.

Review 91:Great food and the guy leaving for Austria was really excellent, lady chef (lives horringer?) also v friendly.

Review 92:Noise at pub closing time. No breakfast until 8.30 on Sundays Very hot room

Review 93:Easy walking distance to town centre. Secure car parking Comfortable beds Lots of TV channels

Review 94:There wasn't anything we didn't like

Review 95:We liked the whole concept of the old style buildings and the novelty of staying in a working brewery. Staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. Comfort was the best, food was great, couldn't have asked for more. Our ages ranged from 17 to 85 and this place catered for us all. Will definitely go back again.

Review 96:Wifi didn't work in my room. Bathroom in need of updating. Chaos from the bar manager over my food order. Top end price for what it is.

Review 97:Loved the beer and the unusual bar/restaurant. Food was good but.... Young staff were great. Good location close to the A14, but a little hard to find.

Review 98:Breakfast served too late at the week-end (from 8.30 rather that 7.30) but the staff did provide me with a sandwich the night before.

Review 99:The 'pub' was a good place to have drink, the room was excellent, spacious, wifi, sky tv, coffee making etc. The bathroom was excellent too - with a proper wash sink!! and lots of room. - it was about 10 mins from the town as a gentle walk.

Review 100:The dining tables had a sticky feel even though they we're perfectly clean, it was a build up of cleaning product Quite off putting

Review 101:Location The beer and food The staff

Review 102:Room was just adequate in size and furnishings. Food was only satisfactory, not outstanding. Overpriced.

Review 103:Excellent service from staff. Off road parking. Very good Wi-Fi connectivity. Quiet area around the location although could be noisy from the pub clients. Good area for visiting the town Good selection and quality beer

Review 104:Never made up our room on second day of our stay, but it wouldn't stop me from staying there again.

Review 105:Excellent food Friendly staff Free WiFi Sky TV Close to town centre Car park Clean & comfortable

Review 106:Was offered "real milk" as opposed to carton pack which is usual with tea facility in the room on arrival, which I was grateful for after a lengthy tiring journeyhowever after that no milk appeared in the room, and as there was no reception area was a bit reluctant to ask for some. Breakfast was good, and was able to request a different choice than that stated. more fruit such as grapefruit and prunes would have made it even better. However these are minor quibbles as the accommodation and price suited my needs

Review 107:Bedroom larger than expected, clean and comfortable, I've never had a complimentary bottle of beer with the tea facilities before and being part of the brewery was a nice touch. Closer to town centre than I thought, but as a solo traveller probably wouldn't walk back at night

Review 108:The bathroom was a bit on the shabby side. A bit expensive for a week night off high season

Review 109:Friendly staff and a quiet location. Convenient for sightseeing. A good evening meal.

Review 110:Feeling invisible to table waiting staff and waiting an hour to be served average food at above average prices. Spoiling a delicious cooked breakfast by not including beans! which are apparently extra. They arrived just as I was finishing. Sorry for the negatives guys BUT these little things are easily sorted and make a massive difference.

Review 111:Friendly check in, lovely clean spacious room with a very comfortable bed. Modern flat TV with the premium sky channels included! And a complimentary bottle of the onsite brewed beer, which was excellent. Nice selection of hot drinks with fresh milk. All round excellent place.

Review 112:My room would have been tight for 2 people. Others were more spacious.

Review 113:The delicious food. Helpful staff. Quiet rooms. Free wifi. Convenient position

Review 114:nothing

Review 115:Excellent location within easy walking distance of town centre. landlord very friendly and produces excellent beer. Bootle of beer in room nice added extra

Review 116:Nit picking - breakfast bread poor quality. The complimentry bottle beer in room was off.

Review 117:Clean room lovely white sheets. Restaurant menu and quality fantastic along with great home brewed beer. Cooked breakfast good.

Review 118:Slightly dodgy WiFi connection - blinked in and out a little bit, and quite slow.

Review 119:Fabulous staff Good beer Comfortable room Convenient parking Lovely outside area

Review 120:It was very hot when we stayed, with no air con or fans in the rooms we had to have windows open so not only suffered with the heat but the very noisey drinkers in the outside drinking area below

Review 121:Sunday breakfast- waitress could have been a bit more attentive... we weren't late but there was no refill on the fresh fruit yoghurts etc. Had to ask for more coffee.

Review 122:Comfortable rooms tea and coffee making facilities beer! useful local info in rooms menu looked nice and drinks interesting but we were dining out so could not try

Review 123:No complaints.

Review 124:The friendly relaxed atmosphere in the dining room and bar area. The helpful efficient staff.A quiet comfortable room.Superb evening meals.

Review 125:Not much selection for vegetarians on the menu. &5 for an indifferent Merlot was a bit much. I realise it was a brewery of course but not all of us are beer drinkers!

Review 126:Comfortable room, pleasant staff

Review 127:Box room was a little stuffy...

Review 128:The best bitter beer was excellent - right temperature and refreshing on the hot days …. staff were very friendly and helpful and made me feel special and at home.

Review 129:Lovely pub. Sadly, we'd already eaten our evening meal so missed out on what looked like a fabulous menu. Had late night beer in the courtyard and then off to bed in a really lovely room. Complimentary beer appreciated and a great breakfast. Never been to Bury St Edmunds before - all in all it was a perfect night away.

Review 130:overcrowded room ,servicing of room disappointing, noisy, chaotic parking arrangements

Review 131:excellent food, helpful service ,convenient location, comfortable bed
