The Fox descritpion

The Fox is a 15th-century inn, around 5 minutes’ walk from the centre of Bury St Edmunds. It offers a high standard of bed and breakfast accommodation alongside its popular restaurant and bar with pretty terrace beer garden.
All rooms at The Fox are equipped with underfloor heating, and incorporate locally made granite-topped furniture. Each has a flat-screen TV, safe, iron, hairdryer and free Wi-Fi, as well as tea and coffee facilities, with the superior Hayloft Suite featuring a luxurious four-poster bed and 2-person bath.
Guests can enjoy a freshly cooked full English breakfast served in the inn. The restaurant serves an inviting menu of burgers, steaks, salads and substantial main courses, and lies opposite the Abbey Gardens behind St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Bury St Edmunds offers rich Suffolk heritage with a Regency theatre, the medieval Guildhall and the Norman Tower among its varied attractions. A lively street market, a 12th-century museum and a boutique cinema all add to its considerable charm.

Reviews for The Fox

Review 1:Tv reception poor not all channels available. Drumming sound in room all night. Veiw of car park out of window.

Review 2:Cleanliness . Privacy. Tea/coffee and confectionary . Room service option. Close to town centre. Free parking.

Review 3:the building is nicely preserved, there was a picture inside saying it was 500 years old - I loved how they kept some of the older elements in the building giving you the old authentic English feeling !!! the staff were very kind and helped with all my questions. the room I had was very clean and looked very new , the heating was perfect .

Review 4:The room was pleasant and the parking was good. The pub still felt like a pub - authentic and reflected the feel of the town. The staff were very pleasant.

Review 5:The rooms were very comfortable and nicely decorated. The bathroom was warm and very clean and modern. Staff were very friendly and service at breakfast was excellent.

Review 6:Would be nice if there was a bar area not all dining in the pub.

Review 7:Warm cosy clean very comfortable and beautifully designed. Great service and warm and friendly. Have stayed before and will again.

Review 8:Air con hard to regulate No full length mirror Needed blackout curtains Skylight blind control not highlighted

Review 9:Convenient location and parking. Well stocked tea/coffee stand. Comfortable bed Reasonable quality food

Review 10:The room and the special effort made by and the friendliness of the staff. Thank you for the special attention to make my wife's birthday special.

Review 11:Too much noise on our roof the first day! It awakened us too much early in the morning. We supposed it was the laundry washing department, or the air conditioner of the whole rooms. And the breakfast service was very very slow! We also missed a little smile on the face of the blonde waitress. The brow haired waitress was very very nice and warm.

Review 12:We did like the extremely comfortable an deliciously decorated rooms, as well as the location of the hotel. Our children were excited about our room number 6. Beautiful and wide! Nice hotel!

Review 13:Poor cooked breakfast with 'hard boiled' poached eggs and white toast delivered instead of brown. I subsequently received an apology when checking out.

Review 14:An excellent large room; good value for money dinner in the restaurant and decent beer on tap

Review 15:None.

Review 16:Loved everything about the Fox, it was first class throughout ! We didn't dine there however the breakfast was superb with a great choice. The accommodation was a converted stable block with a bit of history and it was absolute luxury ...beautifully clean and comfortable with all the mod-cons that you would expect and the staff were very friendly. The town was probably an easy ten minute walk away but that wasn't a problem ...It was excellent, we have no complaints and we would definitely go back !!

Review 17:Had a problem one morning with no hot water so couldn't shower but it was rectified by the time we returned in the evening

Review 18:the staff were friendly when we arrived. the room was clean and well decorated

Review 19:The price was a lot more than I would normally pay for a one nights stay. Still not sure why it was this price but all in all we had a good stay but couldn't afford a second night!

Review 20:The accommodation was lovely great rooms and everything you needed. Good pub food and brilliant location for walking to the town and sightseeing.

Review 21:The breakfast really let this place down. My eggs could have bounced off the plate and there was a very basic fruit and bread selection. My husband's fry up was really very basic and there seemed no evidence of that locally sourced meat etc. Its the second time I have stayed at an English Inn's place and the breakfast was the same in Marlborough. Its a real shame that such fabulous accommodation is let down in this way. If you get this sorted it would have been 10 out of 10 .

Review 22:The room was fabulous - clean spacious and well designed. Probably one of the best rooms I have stayed in. Lovely staff. Really great.

Review 23:We had to miss breakfast , advertised as from 7am but we were told by a member of staff it would be 7.30am which didn't work with our 7.45am check out for work.

Review 24:A very nice setting within the car park of the pub with well decorated and furnished rooms. Nice big bed and well organised room.

Review 25:One of the rooms booked had no fridge and had a bright exit sign lit up in full view of the bed.

Review 26:Huge comfortable bed, spacious rooms. On site parking and good breakfast in the Fox Inn.

Review 27:It was impossible to fill the kettle without a water bottle.

Review 28:The room was very well laid out, comfortable and a pleasure to be in. The staff were friendly and the location is great.

Review 29:We stayed at the fox inn with friends staying in all of the other rooms. The hotel rooms are gorgeous and I especially loved the fact you can park your car directly outside of each room. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 30:For no apparent reason , breakfast service was very slow and the food was like warm

Review 31:Very comfortable accommodation & very convenient for walking around the town. Loved the easy access to the Abbey Gardens.

Review 32:There was nothing that I didn't like about the place.

Review 33:The accommodation is in what appears to be converted barns. Our room was spacious enough with an extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom was a decent size too. The ceilings are quite high and so there is an electrically operated velux window in the roof. Air conditioning was very good too. It's right opposite the bottom of the Abbey grounds so fairly central too

Review 34:Overall stay was perfect, but when we went for breakfast,it was very disappointing.Only one waitress who was very busy and stressed out,got orders wrong and one breakfast didn't even turn up.Food very average.

Review 35:excellent location, close to everything.Stayed in Hayloft suite which was very luxurious and had everything we needed.

Review 36:1) No booking in procedure on arrival, no booking out when leaving. Our opinion there should have been a policy where ID is shown at least before allowing the room key is handed out. 2) Lack of staff at breakfast time. Had to wait over an hour on Monday 6th July before a cooked breakfast arrived. Half an hour wait before coffee was served. 3) Being woken up by fire alarm, 1am, 1.20am, thankfully no fire - an electrical fault. 4) What staff we saw seem to lack in training. 5) Evening meal was vastly below standard. One meal burnt the other not cooked as requirements.

Review 37:Great location, easy to get around the area. Comfortable bed and room.

Review 38:We stayed in the stable block and were extremely impressed with the quality of the furnishings & the comfort of the room. Nothing had been overlooked. A good breakfast was served in the pub just a short walk across the car park.

Review 39:Food is from a formula, so nothing special, ie cheap breakfast ingredients, my wife's stilton & broccoli soup at dinner was like dishwater, although her steak was tender. My prawn cocktail and burger were standard

Review 40:Spacious room with super design

Review 41:The rooms are excellent conversions from stables. In particular the upstairs loft accommodation for one of our party was huge and pretty amazing. Breakfast kippers were very special.

Review 42:The staff were a bit stand-off-ish at times, and seemed in a hurry to get on to the next thing before they had finished serving you.

Review 43:This was our 4th stay at The Fox, we stayed in room 3 which had a fridge, air con and a velux window, which was much needed in the hot weather! Food was also very good.

Review 44:The room was lovely and clean and bed very comfortable. Good location good breakfast. Staff very helpful especially Mia who was lovely would recommend it.

Review 45:The key to get into the room in the dark was difficult as we could not see the key pad on the wall was black so was the cladding. Please explain to guests

Review 46:Bedroom

Review 47:TV had constant interference with bad reception. Large metal extraction chimneys at rear of accommodation were very loud from 7am- 6pm.

Review 48:The accommodation in chalet style rooms adjacent to the property were very pleasant and original.

Review 49:This is probably our fault because we got up late but the breakfast buffet was missing quite a few things. It doesn't really matter though as the cooked breakfast is what you're there for.

Review 50:The staff were so helpful letting us check in early at short notice so we could get ready for the wedding we had to attend. I spoke to someone the night before and they ensured our room was the first to be sorted. The beds were incredible, I didn't want to get out of it in the morning! The room was well equipped and had everything you would need in it. The location right by the Abbey gardens is ideal as you only have to cross the street to reach them.

Review 51:The breakfast was very limited ran put of fresh juice and we requested more but it never arrived. Fruit was over rope and there was not much choice. Table was dirty. Disappointed with breakfast.

Review 52:The staff were extremely welcoming and the room was exquisite and the meal in the pub was superb.

Review 53:Had trouble sleeping, due to heavy winter duvet on bed ( a common problem these days in all hotels ).

Review 54:The rooms were very well designed and equipped, one of the nicest hotel rooms that we have stayed in.

Review 55:An average breakfast made worse by poorly trained and motivated staff. Checking Facebook rather than serving your guests doesn't make me want to come back for more.

Review 56:Amazing room, really well done, lots of attention to detail and a great place to stay.

Review 57:Limited selection of fruit at breakfast. Mixed fruit was a choice of apples!! Both mornings we had to request the Orange juice to be replenished. Dining room seemed to need organising.

Review 58:The room was well furnished and very comfortable. The en-suite was good but the soap dispensers difficult to use, especially in the shower.

Review 59:Breakfast slow service, poor coffee, chipped crockery and average food - I wouldn't be happy if I came in and paid what they were asking for it.

Review 60:Comfortable room with everything you need - even aircon.

Review 61:No decaf coffee or tea. Limited selection of breakfast cereal Limited selection of fruit to go with yoghurt Difficult to fill kettle in room

Review 62:Location Staff Cooked breakfast good

Review 63:Manager a bit dour but efficient. Breakfast 2nd morning (Sat) very slow, + not as much choice on buffet as 1st morning. Person on duty not very efficient.

Review 64:The size of the room and the bathroom, the wifi and the comfort of the bed. Easy walking distance of the town. Parking outside the door. Quiet. Enjoyed the evening meal very much and good service.

Review 65:Paying for Wi-Fi

Review 66:Young staff gave us nice friendly welcome. Opened the door of a lovely room with lots of little luxuries and spotlessly clean. Will always look this place up again

Review 67:The breakfast food was good but the service was variable, but the single waitress was very polite and did her best.

Review 68:The en suite room was most comfortable and the staff were very welcoming.

Review 69:Staff at dinner could have smiled a bit more.

Review 70:We really liked the Fox hotel. Very central, and very near to town. The room was very clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. We had a full english breakfast which set us up for our walk. I would like to thank the staff for their nice welcome. We ate dinner in the fox, and found the meal not to bad.

Review 71:Some of the staff were surly and unhelpful. Evening meal was poor. Breakfast supposed to be at 8 - no one turned up till 8.30 which delayed us. Breakfast was poor and staff not able to check us out of room - this made us late for our appointment the following morning. No apology just debited my card without even a courtesy call. Very disappointing!

Review 72:Room was nice but overpriced for what it was. Some of the staff were nice.

Review 73:The bar/restaurant seemed to under staffed with everyone under great pressure. It seemed to be poorly managed, e.g. they ran out of orange juice and mushrooms for breakfast..

Review 74:The room was excellent, very comfortable and well equipped and close to the town centre

Review 75:No pastries for breakfast although i understand they are now going to start including these. Some noise outside our room in the morning from builders but it wasnt too bad.

Review 76:We stayed for one night, There was parking outside our room, the room was clean and comfortable and had everything you need, breakfast was good. The Fox is within easy walking distance to the town which has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.

Review 77:Food whilst ok was just not on same level as accommodation. Satisfactorypub food but no better.

Review 78:The room was excellent and location couldn't be bettered.

Review 79:One very small gripe in that through the night our room got very warm due to the under floor heating but unfortunately we were unable to change the temp.

Review 80:The Fox is beautiful, when we arrived we checked straight into our room even though we were early. Stunning decor, very tidy and the biggest bed I e ever seen. We also dined for out evening meal we was equally beautiful. The staff were attentive and helpful. Would absolutely stay again no hesitation.

Review 81:Perhaps a previous guest had interfered with the heating controls, despite the warnings not to do so, but the room was uncomfortably hot during the night. In addition, the room had a rather damp or musty smell as though it needed a really good airing. Probably the fact that the window opens directly onto the car park at ground floor level means it doesn't often get left open for long.

Review 82:The room was impressively spacious, comfortably furnished and surprisingly quiet considering it was adjacent to the pub car park. Brilliantly hot and powerful shower.

Review 83:Wifi a bit slow and erratic. Would have liked a bathrobe to be supplied.

Review 84:Room very clean, warm and cosy and well decorated. Quiet even though this is a busy Pub as the rooms are separate from the main building. Breakfast very good.

Review 85:Stayed in room 4. Although we were provided with a kettle it was impossible to fill it from the bathroom tap due to a design error. There was no access to, or indication that it was safe to drink the bathroom tap water , it was warm, so we had to take the kettle to bar. Bathroom was huge but the shower didn't do it justice, underpowered with a small head and so body warmth was lost in the large room. A bedspread would have added more comfort to the bed which looked a bit clinical. Most staff were very good but the higher up the hierachy the lower the level of customer service.

Review 86:The room had character, lighting and blinds could be operated from the bed and the bed was very comfortable

Review 87:Slow service in the bar not enough staff to cover amount of diners in resturant. Breakfast order was forgotten.

Review 88:Unusual lay out of rooms with convenient parking directly outside. Rooms very well laid out and decor very good quality. Fairly close to town too.

Review 89:The rooms are set in a courtyard just behind the Inn and are amazing! The bed was huge and so comfortable. Was beautifully decorated. The room was lovely and warm and the bathroom was excellent - even down to the box of thoughtful extras (cotton wool, cleansing pads etc). All the staff at The Fox Inn were friendly and very helpful. Very close to town with a lovely walk through the Abbey Gardens. Thoroughly recommend.

Review 90:Breakfast was a bit meagre.

Review 91:The pub was really well situated near the abbey. The weather was poor but the room was lovely and cosy. We didn't have dinner there but in all respects it was a nice place to be

Review 92:Two very minor concerns. Neither of bedside lights seemed to work but perhaps we just couldn't work out how to switch them on. Position of TV meant having to move it on its wall arm to get into bed. Knocked the aerial lead out and couldn't get it back in.

Review 93:Large bedroom and bathroom with loads of character. Lovely warm bathroom and lots of hot water. Great breakfast in good adjoining pub restaurant. Easy walk into town. Good parking.

Review 94:Everything about my stay at the fox inn was superb. The staff were so friendly and helpful even though it was Christmas day. The room was beautifully decorated and had everything you would possibly need.the breakfast was fresh local and very well cooked. The Fox is situated in an ideal location for visiting bury st edmunds yet it is still quiet and peaceful in the converted barn rooms. We parked outside our room. Brilliant place well worth a visit.

Review 95:A more obvious sign would have helped to find the Fox- our sat-nav said it was on the other side of the road. Some decaf coffee in the room would have been good.

Review 96:The room was warm, the bed was wide and comfortable. The shower worked well. Breakfast was very well cooked. The staff were helpful.

Review 97:nothing

Review 98:location great with parking outside your room/helpfull friendly staff/good food /fantastic rooms laid out nice with all needs we had a bath and a shower in one bathroom.

Review 99:Being a light sleeper; the fire exit light directly opposite the bed and the footsteps heared from the room above kept me awake. This wouldn't put me off staying again.

Review 100:The comfortable bed and spacious, beautifully designed rooms. The room was also very clean and the staff were really helpfull and pleasant.

Review 101:breakfast unavailable until 8.00 at weekends - although I requested and was given a hamper of cereal, fresh milk, fruit, yogurt, bread & marmalade the previous evening; waterproof mattress protector makes for a sweaty night (but I understand the reasons for using it)

Review 102:spacious room with independent access from the courtyard; good quality oak furnishings; huge comfy bed with pure cotton bedlinen; well-designed bathroom; opening windows; good supply of tea and coffee - plus teapot! large, thick towels

Review 103:That we were only staying one night!

Review 104:Situation within the town, beautiful room - very stylish! Superb staff, great restaurant with a brilliant menu. We had a wonderful stay! Thankyou.

Review 105:Didn't sleep a wink all night due to constant waterfall gush of rain every 6 seconds landing on the floor outside my room due to broken guttering and fall pipe!

Review 106:Beautifully decorated rooms, very spacious

Review 107:Few cobwebs and their residents which should have been spotted and cleaned away. Not a great problem and otherwise nothing to complain about.

Review 108:Quality of room layout and fittings. Underfloor heating and great 6ft wide bed Excellent breakfasts. Whole thing was quite luxurious and very reasonable cost. Location great especially as parking in town is a challenge.

Review 109:Nothing

Review 110:The location, the bedroom, bed and bedding (very good quality), bathroom, towels (big and good quality). It's a pub so there aren't really any facilities, but the car park is right by the rooms and the pub is very nice.

Review 111:Breakfast service was a little slow. Food was worth the wait, but I would've liked to have been offered my coffee a bit quicker. Did have to keep looking at the young waitress to get her attention. Not a huge issue though and didn't detract from a fabulous weekend

Review 112:Huge bed, room immaculately clean, granite work surfaces, looked very boutique (ish), stylish and well done. Food was excellent and the waitress who served us was very friendly. Food bill was much cheaper than anticipated and very good quality steak. Presentation was excellent. 5 minutes walk from town centre. Breakfast had good choice and poached eggs cooked to perfection

Review 113:The heat in the room as the weather was so mild for September, but to be fair we didn't ask for help to adjust it. There was no fridge or bottled water in the room.

Review 114:The size of the room and en-suite was good. Location was also good and a short walk to the town and Abbey Gardens. Most staff were very friendly and helpful. The toiletries and towels were good quality. Big bed.

Review 115:Hotel room was brilliant everything you could want with lovely furnishings. Hotel staff were very attentive. Great location 5 minutes from shops and restaurants. Would return.

Review 116:Green exit sign in rooms too bright kept me awake! But fire regulation unfortunately not owners fault! No bottled water in room

Review 117:Friendly staff Atmosphere in pub itself Location of rooms Food very good Very clean Good parking right next to our room

Review 118:The room we stayed in this time was great but needed a bit of maintenance attention. The air conditioning didn't work and the rooms are so cosy we had to buy a fan. The toilet seat had rusty hinges and the bath panel was broken, but these were minor points and didn't spoil the comfort of this very lovely room.

Review 119:This was the second time we have stayed at The Fox. The rooms are amazing and independently accessed from the pub, so you feel that you can come and go as you like. Food is great and good value too. All also very close to centre of town, so can leave the car outside your room and go exploring the brilliant market and shopping centre, as well as Abbey Gardens, the Brewery, the Theatre Royal etc etc.

Review 120:Really can't think of anything

Review 121:Good location close to all sights Efficient friendly service from all staff Good breakfast choice included in room rate Good Bar food Free parking

Review 122:Lighting controls in room took some getting used to. Took some time to get a second cup of coffee with breakfast.

Review 123:Nice, large room, with spacious bathroom. Allocated parking directly outside room. Good breakfast menu.

Review 124:Pub staff very thin on the ground, meal took forever and the food was very average. Really lets the place down considering how amazing the rooms are.

Review 125:Stunning room and bathroom.

Review 126:There was an emergency exit light in the bedroom that was so bright you did not need to put a light on in the night. Not conducive to a good night's sleep. Food snd service poor.

Review 127:The bedroom was fabulous as well as the bathroom.

Review 128:We stayed over at the Fox Inn on Sunday 17th Aug 2014 due to attending a wedding in the town which was only a 5/10 minute taxi ride. The accommodation was perfect. Everything was finished beautifully, the room was large, our bed was extremly comfy and bathroom was just fab! All of the staff in the pub where really friendly and helpful. Our the breakfast in the morning was amazing. Wad a perfect allround stay and would definatly stay again if in the area.

Review 129:Emergency exit lighting too bright at night. We covered with a jacket. Serious noise disturbance one night by drunken revellers not known about at the time by the proprieter.

Review 130:Good free WiFi. Beautiful room. Very comfortable bed Qualitt aircon and ligting.

Review 131:We thought the staff could have been more welcoming We had a roast dinner which cost nearly £10 each which I admit is not a lot of money but we have had a better roast dinner for £4 in a carvery pub, breakfast also not as good as we thought it would be after reading some of the glowing reviews which former guests had written , it did not meet expectations . As having one of the highest marks compared to other Hotels in the area this is why we chose to stay at the Fox Inn we would give it 5 out of ten. There were insufficient staff and staff that were there seemed to be diss interested in providing good service to hotel guests. We therefore will not be staying at the Fox Inn again

Review 132:The bedroom was modern and comfortable , the bathroom also very modern with a nice little box of toiletries

Review 133:Bathroom door difficult to open & close but this was explained to us on arrival. Shower bit tricky but again once you know how to manipulate it it's fine.

Review 134:Room No5 was lovely. Very clean & very comfy king size bed. Staff very friendly and obliging. Food was good too would definitely recommend and will be booking again. Only disappointment was the weather which meant we couldn't explore Bury but good excuse to go back

Review 135:cold water tap was always hot or warm. Otherwise everything was perfect. We will be back!!!

Review 136:the room, bed, bathroom, cleanliness, breakfast, lovely sausages, big eggs, good service, very friendly staff. good value evening meals with delicious specials. Special thanks to Sonya a lovely lady who made us feel very welcome.Dedicated parking excellant.

Review 137:Nothing.

Review 138:Very nice room with all mod cons. Five minute walk to Bury town centre. Just across the road are the abbey gardens which you can walk through to get to the town centre. Breakfast was very good, quality produce cooked to order. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will be staying here again.
